Map

Day 1: Athens - Poros (about 30 nautical miles) The crew will meet you at 14:30 at the Alimos Kalamaki marina. Your boat is located on pontoon 9, between place 914-927. You will be welcomed with a welcome drink before attending the briefing of your skipper and leaving the moorings around 3pm. A lunch prepared with local produce will be served during the crossing. You will anchor in Poros at the end of the day. This island will seduce you with its old-fashioned charm and pastel-coloured houses and traditional taverns. Dinner at your leisure. Day 2: Poros - Hermion (about 21 nautical miles) You will leave Poros and head for the Tselevinia Islands for a relaxing stop. You can take the opportunity to jump into the blue waters and take a dip before lunch. You set sail again towards the south of the Peloponnese. You will stop at Hermione, a fishing village, mentioned by Homer in the "Catalogue of Ships". Once ashore, you will have free time to explore each alley of the old town. Dinner at leisure. Day 3 : Hermione - Spetses (about 11 nautical miles) You set sail again towards Spetses, an island with a sweet jasmine scent, very popular among Athenian high society. You will anchor in the old port before exploring the island on foot or even by horse-drawn carriage. You can discover the lively district of Dapia, with its shops, cafes and restaurants, and also see the impressive Poseidonion Hotel built in 1914 to develop tourism. Dinner at your leisure. Day 4: Spetses - Dokos (about 5 nautical miles) Breakfast, then departure for Dokos, a wild and uninhabited island completely untouched by tourism. A favourite place for sailors, its idyllic anchorages, such as the bay of Skintos, will make for an enchanting stopover. Take a seat around the table and enjoy the delicious local dishes prepared by your hostess, then get out your fins, mask and snorkel to observe the extraordinary sights under the water. Dinner on board. Day 5: Dokos - Hydra (about 7 nautical miles) The crew hoists up the anchor and heads to one of Greece's most beautiful islands, Hydra. You will appreciate the peaceful atmosphere that prevails on this island where motor vehicles were banned years ago. As your day is free, you can explore the island at your own pace and discover the Assumption Monastery, the Museum of Archives and many others. Climbing to the top of the hill overlooking the city, you will have a breathtaking view of the port. At the end of the day, the colors are even more spectacular. Lunch and dinner at your leisure. Day 6: Hydra - Perdika (about 22 nautical miles) Your cruise continues a little further north. You will stop in Perdika, a charming fishing village located southwest of Aegina. Its rocky beaches are beautiful. We recommend you pick a spot on one of them and take a swim or relax under the warm sunshine. You can taste delicious local seafood by visiting the fish market which is located near the port. This evening you will enjoy dinner at your leisure while admiring the sunset. Day 7: Perdika - Athens (about 21 nautical miles) Why not start your day with a morning swim? You will spend the morning on Moni (nature reserve, located just 1 mile from Perdika) and meet hundreds of peacocks, unique inhabitants of the island. Moni’s crystal-clear water is perfect for a snorkeling session. After lunch, it will be time to set sail again for Athens. You will dock at the marina around 18:00. To end your trip in style, we recommend a short getaway to the ancient city to visit Acropolis and its archaeological treasures. Dinner at your leisure. Day 8 : Athens Your disembarkation is scheduled after breakfast, around 9am. Please note: It is possible that your crew will not be present on board for the last night at dock. Indeed, the crew enjoys spending time in a real bed between cruises. In this case, the skipper will give you all necessary instructions to follow to have your cold breakfast before departing the boat.

Our customers' reviews of this boat

Jack and Ema were wonderful

We really enjoyed our time on the sea. Jack and Ema were so friendly and knowledgeable of each port. They made recommendations on where to go and made sure that we were taken care of the entire time. Ema’s meals were delicious and she always created a peaceful atmosphere.

Honestly the best holiday we have every had!

From the first email enquiry, to stepping off the boat with a heavy heart...this was a dream come true. AMAZING service from Francesca with the quotes and booking and for arranging something extra special for my birthday on board too. The boat was excellent and plenty of room for all to either have some alone time, or be with the other guests. Very comfortable cabins with plenty of space and many options for seating, lying down, sun tanning on board. Jack and Emma were legends and we had so many laughs and they were the perfect skipper and hostess and just lovely people. The experience and knowledge they both have in so many different topics was brilliant and we couldn't imagine another sailing trip without them. Emma fed us the most delicious and varied menu. All so so good and was always so much food that nobody ever went hungry...and she did all of this with a massive smile on her face too. Could not recommend this experience more highly! Thank you for make my dream of a sailing holiday come true, and giving me the best 50th birthday I could ever imagine....we WILL be doing another cruise, that's guaranteed.

Fantastic Experience

This was a dream vacation. Our skipper Jack is a true sailor, Very knowledgeable of the Saronic Islands, super skilled at sailing. He kept us well informed of the schedule all along the way. We had some higher level winds the week of our trip, and he adjusted the schedule slightly so that we could take advantage of getting good time under sail, but still found a quiet protected cove that would allow all of us to have a great night sleep. Hostess Emma, is warm and friendly, putting everyone at ease. She is a great cook, the meals were all fantastic. She is also very knowledgeable of the islands and restaurants and shops, giving helpful tips at each stop. Before boarding we were a little unsure how the comfort of the cabins would be. Happy to say the beds are approximately Queen size, easily accommodates 2 tall adults. There were enough cubbies and drawers to put all our clothes and toiletries in without issue, but would recommend that you pack light. (It is a little like glamping.) The boat itself has many different areas to lounge or sit. It allows the passengers the choice of interacting or getting time to themselves. Also good options for sun or shade. The very best part of the trip was all the swimming and snorkeling. The water is just incredible. There are multiple opportunities to get into the water each day. I highly recommend taking advantage of every stop..

Awesome way to meet new friends (Cabin Booking)

We booked a cabin and was concerned with the tight quarters with strangers. I would say don't fear! It was a wonderful way to make new friends and the boat is roomy enough that you can have your privacy or hang out and visit. Captain Jack and Emma were wonderful in insuring everyone was safe and having fun. I would definitely do this trip again.

Great Cruise with a great crew

Emma & Jack are a great crew, skilled and friendly. They help, support and cuddle the people on the boat across the week spent in the lovely Island of gulf of Saronico. Special mention to the boat Marmar, kept by George in a very good shape. Lovely first week of honeymoon. Thanks Emma & Jack :-)

CROISIERE REUSSI

Tout s'est très bien passe

Bellissima crociera

Splendida vacanza , skipper (Jack) molto competente, Emma (hostess) ottima cuoca e ottimo supporto tecnico nella navigazione, rotta splendida e mare perfetto.

Ottima accoglienza

Prima esperienza in catamarano, l'abbiamo trovato confortevole e mediamente pulito. Tappa a Hydra estenuante.

TROPIC LIKE IT'S HOT

CHECK OFF YOUR BUCKET LIST ON EASTERN CARIBBEAN SHORES

While any trip can be customized to fit to your travel style, a 7 night cruise to the Eastern Caribbean is a favorite of action-packed adventure seekers. The ports are fairly close together, so you can trek through El Yunque National Forest one day and swim with South American sea lions in St. Thomas the next — immersing yourself in two destinations that feel entirely different.

Couple Enjoying Cocktail on Seven Mile Beach, George Town, Grand Cayman

WESTERN CARIBBEAN RUINS AND RAYS FOR DAYS

The western Caribbean is especially known for its diverse selection of things to do. Rediscover Mayan history in Cozumel, go cave diving in Playa Del Carmen or kick back with a cocktail at Seven Mile Beach in Grand Cayman. The distance between ports can mean more days at sea, which only keeps the thrill fest going strong onboard the cruise ship.

St. Lucia, The Pitons

PARADISE FOUND — IN THE SOUTHERN CARIBBEAN

The Southern Caribbean is a region unlike any other. Bringing together a mix of cultures from Africa, Europe and North America, there’s a melding of music, dialects and flavors everywhere you turn. You can visit sugar plantations in Antigua, see the underwater world by submarine in Aruba and hike the Pitons in St. Lucia — all during a bragworthy one week cruise.

Day 1: check-in.

After transferring from Terrance B Airport. Lettsome Airport to the Hodges Creek Marina in Tortola from 6pm you will board the Catamaran. You will enjoy dinner prepared by the on-board chef and spend the night moored at the Island Marina.

On Sunday, after a good breakfast, we will sail from Hodges Creek Marina to White Bay where we will arrive after two hours for lunchtime, and we will visit the beautiful Soggy Dollar Bar, very famous and renowned in the area.   In the late afternoon we will sail to Great Harbor for a tasty dinner, and we will eventually even visit Foxys Tamarind too for some nice cocktails.

We will leave from Great Harbor after breakfast and head to Sandy Cay for snorkelling and other water activities, then lunch. Then we'll visit the national park donated by the prestigious Rockefeller family to the BVIs, and you can ask a skipper to take you for a dinghy ride close to shore and show you the wonders of this island. In the afternoon, we will sail for about two hours to Norman Island to visit the crystal-clear caves of Treasure Point, and then continue to Benures Bay for a quiet evening under the stars.

After breakfast, we will reach the Indians, the perfect location to do some fantastic snorkeling in the crystal clear waters.   After this experience we will set sail again, this time towards Deadmans Bay on Peter Island, to have lunch and relax on the beach.   Later in the afternoon you can visit the Great Harbor of Peter Island for the fantastic festivities present.   After this, dinner and evening at Cooper Island.

On Wednesday we will head to the Baths Marine Park where we will spend the morning and then have lunch. Here we can snorkel or take a short hike from the beach to Devil Bay through a labyrinth of giant stones. In the afternoon, we will set sail for North Gorda Sound, where we'll arrive after about two hours at anchor between Prickly Pear and Eustatia for an evening of relaxation and tranquillity.

We will soon set sail for Anegada Setting Point. After about 3 hours of sailing, once ashore we will have the opportunity to rent jeeps and explore the island in an adventurous way, after which we will enjoy a mouth-watering lobster dinner, a true island speciality. During this experience, we will also see the peculiarities of the beautiful Sunken Island, such as flamingos and white beaches.

In the morning, from Anegada we sail for about four hours to Monkey Point, on Guana Island, for some snorkelling, followed by lunch. Here we will see lots of turtles and an incredible variety of colourful fish, very close to the shore. We will then stop in the afternoon at the lovely White Bay Beach, with paddle boards and kayaks, before setting sail in the evening to Marina Cay before sunset, where we will also spend the night.

offer yourself the dream, a private cruise by catamaran to some of the most well known and off-beat greek islands. Swim in the middle of Aegean, benefit of isolated beaches, explore the history and traditions through organized shore excursions. A trip that you'll remember forever

17.00 leave Athens (Alimos Marina) and sail to Kea (or Tzia) an off-beat, less discovered island of Aegean. The capital of the island Loulis is situated on a hill due to the fear of pirates in the past. The town and largest villages Korisia (port) and Vourkari are charming settlements mostly with neoclassical buildings- Overnight Kea

Today we sail to Kythnos, an island of 100 km shoreline with great, crystal clear waters. Kythnos has barely 676 permanent inhabitants and its history stretches back to the Mesolithic era. The castle of Orias and Katafiki cave are some of the highlights of the island- Overninght Kythnos

We continue our exploration to Syros, capital island of Cyclades and most populated. All though this is the largest island during our cruise you will be charmed by the beauty of Neoclassical homes and the wealth of Syros, mostly coming from shipping. Syros is also a cultural destination with many ongoing art exhibitions and cultural events- Overnight Syros

Today we visit Mykonos, perhaps the most well known Greek island. This destination of the international Jet Set offers everything: quite and vibrating beaches with ongoing beach parties, crystal clear waters, haute cuisine restaurants, a fascinating island town to explore, shopping options and unlimited nightlife- Overnight Mykonos

We continue on to Tinos. Centrally situated among the other Cycladic islands, Tinos is well known for its cathedral, Panagia Evangelistra, a holy church for the Greek orthodox community.

Tinos offers great, unspoiled beaches, such as Kolibithra. Dovecotes (tiny fortresses) and about 80 windmills are some of the interesting points of the island- Overnight Tinos

Today we return for an extra day in Kea. You shall enjoy the peace and great beaches of the island at your own pace, relax under the Cycladic sun or, if you wish, visit with your cruise fellows a local taverna to savor the original recipes of the island. Overnight Kea

Its time to return to Athens..(09.00).It is a pity after this exciting exploration of the Aegean islands, one of the top travel destinations in the world. But don’t worry. An extension of your package can be offered in Athens after your cruise (or before) to explore the Greek capital that has marked the western civilization – End of Cruise (Athens- Alimos Marina)

BVI 7-Day Crewed Catamaran Itinerary

Crewed Catamaran Charter BVI

Discover the highlights of the Virgin Islands, Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, and Anegada on your BVI Crewed Catamaran Charter

See our BVI Crewed Catamarans

A charter holiday in the BVI offers countless activities to enjoy - stunning beaches, diving, and an endless amount of popular BVI attractions . The following itinerary has been designed for families and groups of friends, ensuring that there is something for everyone to enjoy. Your captain may adapt it based on the weather and sea conditions and your specific requirements so that you enjoy your perfect BVI yacht charter experience!

BVI Crewed Catamaran Itinerary Map

Day 1: Tortola to the Bight, Norman Island

Akasha Crewed Catamaran BVI Charter

After you've met your crew in Road Town, have a welcome drink and nibbles and you relax into the BVI rhythm. Set sail to Norman Island, which is just over an hour south. On the way, you can anchor briefly and Snorkel at “The Caves” and discover the wonders found below the turquoise BVI waters. Anchor in the Bight and enjoy a spectacular sunset and delightful cuisine prepared by your chef. If you don’t want the day to end there, then head to Willy T’s floating bar where you can dance and enjoy some fabulous shooters!

Day 2: Norman Island, Peter Island & Cooper Island

BVI Crewed Catamaran Lagoon 560

Begin the day with a short sail to “The Indians”, a collection of rocks that resemble an Indian Headdress, for some superb scenery and some amazing snorkelling or diving.

Sailing on to Peter Island, you will discover Deadman’s Bay, an ideal spot for a picnic on the long white sandy beaches or make a splash with the water toys while keeping an eye out for the sea turtles that you’re sharing the azure waters with! After a day in the water, sail over to Haulover at Cooper Island to see a spectacular coastline, easily explored by kayak or paddleboard. Here, you can gaze out at another beautiful sunset while dining on local cuisine, and perhaps a few rum cocktails ashore from the largest selection of Rum in the BVI!

A note about the extraordinary cuisine on a Crewed BVI Yacht charter

BVI Cuisine

One of the most superb and memorable parts of your crewed catamaran charter often has nothing to do with snorkeling or sunsets, it's the unbelievable food that your chef prepares along the way. All of the crewed yachts that Boatbookings recommends have excellent chefs aboard who provide up to 3 glorious meals a day that exactly meet your tastes and preferences.

You don't need to cook, clean, or even refill your wine glass - your crew will take care of everything. All you need to do is enjoy!

Day 3: The Wreck of the Rhone, The Baths and Virgin Gorda

The Baths,Virgin Gorda - BVI Itinerary

After an exotic Caribbean breakfast, backtrack to the far end of Salt Island to the Wreck of the Rhone National Park where, below the waves, you will discover a huge sunken mail ship that makes an exciting diving and snorkeling site! Once you’ve had your fill of shipwrecks, you can sail for the famous “Baths” – a 40-foot rock formation at the southwestern tip of Virgin Gorda where you can follow a path through the rocks and splash around in the rock pools.

After having a good soak, you can hike up to the Top of the Baths restaurant and bar for refreshing drinks. Hop back on board and cruise along the coastline of Virgin Gorda. You may wish to stop off at one of the stunning beaches before anchoring for the night in a well-protected harbor thanks to the surrounding reefs and islands including Richard Branson’s Necker Island. Consider a drink at the Saba Rock Resort, and watch the fish feeding at sundown.

Day 4: Virgin Gorda to Anegada

Anegada BVI Itinerary

The North Sound Virgin Gorda is a boater's paradise; you will find several beautiful anchorages and some of the finest resorts and restaurants in the region. It is the perfect place to make the most of your onboard water toys – so why not get out on the water and try some tubing or waterskiing?

On your one-tack sail up to Anegada , you will pass by Richard Branson's exclusive Necker Island, and then sail the open Atlantic. When you see dozens of catamarans moored together, you've reached your destination and will anchor with them. Anegada is quite different from the other BVI islands, as it is composed entirely of coral, and it is known for excellent snorkeling on its reefs and long, white beaches.

Once you've arrived at Anegada, enjoy some water sports or maybe a walk on the amazing white-sand beach, and then rent a jeep and head across the island to Loblolly Bay - a heavenly stretch of deserted beaches that will provide you with another level of relaxation. Here you can indulge in sunbathing and lounging on the white sandy beaches and explore the underwater sea life on the beautiful reef. You may want to have a bite to eat or a rum drink at the Anegada Beach Club.

On your way back, you might even catch a glimpse of the famous pink flamingos on the salt pond.

We have always experienced amazing sunsets on Anegada, as you look westward toward Jost Van Dyke in the distance (tomorrow's destination). Make sure you have time to enjoy it, with and appropriate sundowner drink!

If you like lobster, make a reservation to eat at one of the lobster restaurants in the bay, where you will eat beach-grilled lobster caught just that morning! You've had a full Anegaa day!

Day 5: Anegada to Little Jost Van Dyke

bvi yacht charter, bvi charter guide, bvi boat rental,British Virgin Islands

After breakfast, head southwest to Jost Van Dyke, following the north side of Tortola. There are often sightings of whales and dolphins on the way up to Little Jost Van Dyke, so be sure to have your camera ready!

On the sixth day of your luxury BVI catamaran charter, head out early to be the first at Sandy Spit, one of our favorite destinations in the BVI. This tiny but beautiful deserted island is a great place for snorkeling and taking a few pictures.

Then it's on to White Bay, Jost Van Dyke, and if you wish, a dingy ride over to Great Harbor, where you can dance at the renowned Foxy's bar and restaurant.

Day 7: Soggy Dollar and Foxy's Bar, White Bay, Jost Van Dyke to the Bight, Norman Island

BVI Yacht Charter Lagoon 560

On your final day, you will wake up to the peace and beauty of one the world’s most beautiful beaches: White Bay. Here, it is a tradition to go snorkeling to search for the "soggy dollars" people have lost on the swim back to their boats! After this, you can walk to the end of the beach and climb the hill to get a magnificent view of the White Bay panorama. Lastly, try the requisite "Painkiller" drink at the renowned Soggy Dollar Bar as you watch boats cruising by. Alternatively, head to the lively Foxy's Bar for a couple of cocktails as you sit back and relax on the pure white sand. In the late afternoon, we recommend you start the sail back to the Bight, Norman Island in order to get to Road Town by noon the next day.

Day 8: Return to Road Town, Tortola

Back to the BVI

Why not make the most of your final moments in paradise and cruise around the point to Privateer Bay on your final morning? Here is the ideal spot for you to have one last crack at snorkeling, waterskiing, paddleboarding or any other water sports you have picked up over the week. Finally, you'll have a beautiful sail across the Sir Francis Drake Channel to Road Town and then it is time to say your goodbyes! All good things come to an end, but it really will have been a holiday of a lifetime; you will want to come back year after year!

7 days, 1 catamaran and 3 kids on a BVI Charter : Itinerary & Trip Review

As a travel writer, I not only want to share our family’s travel experiences but also provide useful information such as a sample  7 day BVI catamaran charter itinerary .

Our first catamaran charter with our 3 kids was not near as successful as this one, because I was naive and uninformed. In fact, I wrote an article on how NOT to choose a catamaran charter boat after that trip. I strongly advise anyone who is chartering in the BVI for the first time, to read that article first! If you choose the wrong crew, your vacation will likely suck. There is no itinerary on the earth that is going to fix that!

This year, we were a lot wiser on how to choose a charter boat and crew.  After numerous email conversations, we decided to book our BVI catamaran charter on Miss Kirsty . If you want to see what a week in the BVI on Miss Kirsty looks like, take a few minutes to watch our video.

As you saw in the video, we had a blast on the Miss Kirsty Catamaran. Our days were filled with fabulous food, water sports, snorkeling, and a ton more!

Funny enough, the number one question I get about chartering a boat is “whether their kids would like it?”

Are you freaking kidding me? Let me strip this one down for those who wonder the same thing.

Your kids will spend a week with their bathing suits being the fanciest outfit they are required to wear. An indoor hot shower is always an option, but they will likely just wash down on the back of the boat at the end of the day because its quicker.

If you choose wisely, your captain will be your kids best friend as his will take them tubing as many times as their little hearts desire. Yup, it really is to good to be true for a kid. A week without having to beg Dad to take them just one more time!

If you choose the Miss Kirsty Catamaran, then captain Niall will even take the kids wake boarding in the rain! Try asking Dad to get pelted by rain drops so little Johnny can go for a spin on the board….not gonna happen!

Everything is so easy and simple on a catamaran trip. Let’s take snorkeling for example. There is nothing worse for a kid than waiting to do something, right? On a catamaran charter, if little Johnny wants to go snorkeling its as easy as grabbing your mask and jumping in 24/7 !

Unless your kid is addicted to video games and does not like to get wet, there is no freaking way they could dislike this trip.

I also like that the BVI catamaran charters are all-inclusive. Not the all-inclusive you experienced on your Spring Break Carnival cruise ship, but the kind where every meal is prepared with your personal preferences in mind.

The crew will send you a “preference sheet” prior to your arrival, which I imagine looks something like Taylor Swift’s rider for her concert tour. I  almost  felt guilty while filling out the preference sheet for Miss Kirsty.

From an outsider looking in, it paints a picture of a well to do family who is is very picky. “We don’t drink any Pepsi products, only Coke, and I really dislike Coke Lights.” If Niall ever mentions it to you, I stand firmly behind the fact that I can tell the difference between a Diet Coke and a Coke Light with a blind fold on 🙂

Kirsty is the chef on the aptly named Miss Kirsty catamaran, and she is a damn good one. I can honestly say that we were blown away by her talent as a chef. If you pick Miss Kirsty for one reason alone, it would be for the food!

One of my favorite meals of the day was not actually a meal, rather appetizer hour! Who wouldn’t love an appetizer with an amazing sunset ?

As you might have noticed, I have not mentioned any of the pitfalls we experienced in on our previous catamaran charter in the Grenadines . I’ve not mentioned them because they were not an issue. For example, we had air conditioning upstairs and downstairs all day and night. It simply was not an issue on this trip. We technically had air conditioning on the previous catamaran trip, however the captain would not turn it on. For $3,000 a night, you would think air conditioning would be included!

On our previous catamaran trip, the captain did not “take to Murray.” I would be a very wealthy woman if I had a nickel for every time he ran after him yelling in his Polish accent “Muuurrrayyy don’t do that!” To the contrary, Niall was kind to Murray and they went out of their way to make the kids feel at home.

I also noticed that captain Niall would often choose to motor instead of sail if there was not much wind or if it was more practical. On our previous trip, the captain sailed regardless of whether it would be more convenient for us to motor. He was not going to spend the extra money in fuel period. We spent countless mind numbing hours sailing at a seemingly snail pace on that trip.

I can’t stand a cheap ass, its a huge pet peeve of mine, so you can imagine how well I got along with that captain.

Speaking of going places, I will outline for you our BVI charter itinerary and things to do at each location.

We started in St Thomas because its a cheaper and easier airport for us to fly into. Many of the catamaran charters want to start in Tortola, and I understand the reasoning behind it. However, it costs us double to fly into Tortola and it takes double the time to get there. We were happy that Miss Kirsty would accommodate a St Thomas pick up! It did cost us an additional $600 each way, but it was well worth it.

FYI: There is a difference in being cheap and being practical.

Day 1 :  St Thomas and St. John

We boarded the catamaran charter and set sail for St. John where we spent our first evening. We woke up, and immediately took in the view of our home for the next week.

Day 2: Treasure Island and Norman Island

Treasure Island is home to the caves, where you definitely should stop for a snorkle. I always forget this, but a waterproof flash light would come in handy when you are at Treasure Island snorkeling the caves! It is quite dark in those caves.

The Treasure Island caves are always a hit with little boys. Murray could not get enough of exploring the caves at Treasure Island.

Day 3: Peter Island

Peter Island is a private island and resort. Luckily, Niall has developed a relationship with the owners of Peter Island which enabled us to go on land.

We played tennis at Peter Island, and I went for a run. The Peter Island running trail is not for sissies, and I was on the sissy side of running ability during this trip.

I am not exaggerating when I say that the incline shown in the picture below goes for 2 solid miles with no switch-back breaks.

Needless to say, I had to take a selfie when I made it to the top! This was my first and last time running on this vacation. I think I was delirious when I took this picture.

The view one the way back to the boat made up for it.

Day 4: Cooper Island

If I had to skip one of the ports, it would be Cooper Island.

Let me start off by telling you that Cooper Island is many sailors favorite place to moor. Cooper Island is a very friendly island that welcomes boaters to their restaurant, bar, beach and coffee shop.

The reason that I would skip it is that the water is not as clear at Cooper Island. Niall said its due to seaweed. I can see how looking at crystal blue water gets to be the same old thing if you live here, but it was far from getting old to me.

On the bright side, we had the most amazing sunset of the entire trip at Cooper Island.

The Baths are awesome, but Spring Bay is better.

The Baths are often crowded with tourists so definitely shoot for the afternoon instead of the morning.

While you are waiting for the crowds to disappear at the Baths, go to Spring Bay! Our kids favorite place in Virgin Gorda is Spring Bay where they jump off the rocks over and over and over again. I always forget this, but you should bring a cooler as there is nowhere to buy drinks or food.

We would have spent an extra night in Virgin Gorda if we were not already staying another week at Necker Island. I highly recommend mooring at the Bitter End, and visiting Saba Rock. Don’t miss happy hour at Saba Rock where you can hand feed the Tarpon!

Day 6: Anegada

A lot of people skip Anegada because it takes the most time to get to. However, I think Anegada is a “don’t miss” destination on a BVI catamaran charter.

Anegada is a completely flat island that is known for its lobster. It’s fun to rent scooters, and head to one of the many beach bars on Anegada for a Lobster lunch. I recommend visiting Cow Wreck Beach and Loblolly Beach.

In my humble opinion, the restaurant at Loblolly has the best lobster on Anegada. However, Cow Wreck has a better beach. The island is small so visit both!

Day 7: Guana Island

Guana Island is a private island, and one that we were technically not allowed to visit. It was our experience that they really don’t care if you hang out on their beach, so enjoy!

Diane Furstenberg and her billionaire husband also thought this was a nice place to moor for the night!

Guana Island offered a nice protective cove for water skiiing and wake boarding as well. Niall taught Claire how to slalom at Guana Island!

Day 8: Jost Van Dyke

Jost Van Dyke is home to Foxy’s and Soggy Dollar which are probably two of the most well known beach bars in the BVI. We swam into Soggy Dollar as that is the only way to get there! However, we swam back for another one of Kirsty’s delicious lunches.

One of the best things to do on Jost Van Dyke is hike to the bubbly pool. The bubbly pool is a natural phenomenon that occurs during the winter months. During our visit, the bubbly pool was definitely “bubbly!”

This is what it looks like just before you are crushed into the bubbly pool!

Only the brave or stupid, Im not sure which one it is, will welcome a beating from the Atlantic.

Day 9:  St Thomas

We were supposed to be flying home, but you know how we roll! We stayed for another week on Necker Island for the Necker Cup!

Check back soon for our post on Richard Branson’s Necker Island and the Necker Cup.

I hope that you found our BVI charter itinerary useful. If you decide to charter a catamaran in the BVI, we highly recommend Miss Kirsty catamaran.

Don’t forget that a bad charter crew can ruin your vacation , so choose wisely.

With their new 88  footer from the Double Deck range, Sunreef are unveiling an ultra-comfortable cruising catamaran built for an experienced boating family, and are confirming their ability to complete fully customized projects on the same timescale as production boats.

It took no more than 9 months for the Sunreef 88 DD, first announced at the 2016 Cannes boat show, to see its hulls hit the water in Gdansk, Poland.  Yet this is not just a well-honed semi-custom boat, but a brand new model in the range which is already known to connoisseurs and necessarily demanding owners. Having owned many of the best in English and Italian motor yachts, this family got into sailing with a beautiful 25 meter ketch.  The natural instability of a heeling monohull prompted them to ask Ian Sellers, their skipper, to think of another solution.  The choice of a sailing catamaran was a logical one: the space, stability, low draft, panoramic view and the economical running are irrefutable arguments for those who want XXL-sized comfort.

catamaran boat double decker

A good average speed to cross the Atlantic or to reach new anchorages in the Caribbean islands after a beautiful summer season in the Mediterranean also guided their choice.  It simply remained to find a shipyard capable of satisfying the wishes of the owner.  With a budget of more than 4 million euros, this owner was looking for a boat that was not just ultra-equipped and of the highest quality, but a unit that was entirely made ...

DISCOVER THE MODEL

Description.

The start of the ambitious Sunreef 88 Double Deck project was officially communicated during Sunreef Yachts’ press conference at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2016. After eight months of intensive work, the shipyard proudly announced the launch of this catamaran with a zealous, sporty look.

An experienced yachtsman switching from a massive motor yacht , the owner decided to commission the Sunreef 88 Double Deck to pursue a more stable navigation style with greater living space. Indeed, a challenging project for the shipyard’s engineering and design teams.

Nonetheless, this journey was destined to keep the promise of delivering a state-of-the art fully customized sailing catamaran from the start. To achieve the goal of building a seaworthy and dynamic catamaran, Sunreef Yachts’ team of naval architects conceived a completely new yacht design which seemed far sportier than the rest.

Same as all yachts within her range, the Sunreef 88 Double Deck too features a mezzanine level inside the saloon and a spacious master stateroom with a panoramic view in the bow part of the main deck. However, her superstructure was granted a more aerodynamic aspect. As a result, the 88-footer emphasis equally on both performance and luxury, offering over 300m² of living space and an outstanding sailing experience.

Despite this, the Sunreef 88 Double Deck remains a family-friendly yacht offering the best of comfort and safety. The innovative composite superstructure of the sailing yacht conceals a smart and functional layout with luxurious accommodations for eight guests and up to five crew members.

Upon the owners’ request, the interior decor of the Sunreef 88 Double Deck features exclusive natural materials: Chambord oak, linen, leather, natural stone, and quartz tiles – all contribute to the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the sailing yacht . The feeling of warmth was also achieved through applying numerous orange accents to the interiors – an important color for the owner’s family who consider it to be a symbol of energy.

New Sunreef 92 Double Deck Sailing Catamaran

catamaran boat double decker

From the same people who brought you the original Sunreef Yacht, comes the new Sunreef 92 Double Deck , with a new design which not only streamlines the deck house, but tops it with a giant 40 m 2 fly bridge.

This was inspired by similar designs found on other super yacht designs. In collaboration with K-Epsilon and Rivoyre Ingenierie , The Sunreef Naval Architecture Bureau has intensely studied performance and sea capabilities using state of the art CFD, computational flow dynamics to create the ultimate in catamaran luxury.

Using integrated stepped hull chins, the Sunreef 92 Double Deck catamaran increases interior space, without compromising performance. Now this yacht can accommodate up to 10 guests, in up to 5 double luxury suites, as well as a crew of four.

Sunreef’s 92 Double Deck also features a canoe style boom and carbon mast, one of this manufacturer’s specialties. How are they able to accomplish such feats? They added a new mezzanine floor, which includes a coffee table and lounge, located on the port side of the main deck dining area, freeing up more space below for larger cabins and storage space, or even more suites if you prefer.

Because of this innovative design modification, now the owner’s suite occupies two floors of the entire front area of this yacht, with a private luxury office, gym and leisure area on the upper level, with the bathroom, wardrobe and storage area below deck. Each cabin has an extended size, three way access to their King sized beds, with spectacular panoramic sea views. Not only this, but each luxury suite comes with its own separate bath and shower area, large closets, storage lockers, as well as their own air conditioning and a comprehensive entertainment system.

With a LOA of 27 meters, an 11.2m beam, and a 1.6m draft, this super yacht has a 80 ton displacement. It will also be powered by two 405HP 1200 L/3170 Gal engines, and will be able to cruise at speeds up to 15 knots. The 70m 2 cockpit will also include a large dining area, sunbathing mattresses, and diving equipment. Its spacious fly bridge is fitted with a jacuzzi, two wet bars, barbecue, ice makers and even a pair of jet skis. It will also include a tender, hidden in a specially built locker under the main sun pad of the cockpit.

Even though this is only the second of such models, it isn’t hard to see why the Sunreef 92 Double Deck sailing catamaran is on it’s way to be one of the most sought after luxury yachts. With it’s innovative design, state of the art electronics, and focus on luxury, the Sunreef 92 Double Deck is top of the line, and a must for people who may still think they have it all. Don’t miss out on your own little piece of paradise.

A seafaring adventure on island routes double-decker catamaran cruise.

A seafaring adventure on Island Routes double-decker catamaran cruise

Embark on a luxury catamaran cruise adventure out of Ocho Rios, Jamaica that takes adventure to new heights.

Standing on the dock, I pause a moment to let my gaze travel slowly upwards at the gleaming catamaran floating before me. Rocking gently in the calm Caribbean Sea, the beautiful double-decker  Calipsoul  seems familiar yet exciting and new to me all at the same time. I had chosen Island Routes Catamaran Dunn’s River Cruise the last time I was in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. It had been the perfect combination of relaxation and excitement that I had been looking for. We had also done the romantic Lovers Rock evening cruise, literally sailing into the sunset together. Making the cruise reservation Both times it had turned out exactly as promised and this time around when I knew I was heading back to Jamaica, I reached out to the wonderfully helpful Island Routes team yet again. I spoke with them about how much I had enjoyed the last catamaran excursion I did with them and shared that this time I would be coming with a group of friends and family of all ages. I had enjoyed the snorkeling aspect of the Dunn’s River cruise so much but it had been fairly short and some of my group said they really wanted to let loose and relax.

Island Routes Reggae Family catamaran cruise They suggested the Island Routes Reggae Family catamaran cruise. They explained that it was like The Dunn’s River cruise minus the climbing, which my mom was happy to hear about, and a lot of time spent exploring the underwater world. Then they told me how great my timing was as they now have a brand new double-decker catamaran! To be honest, I couldn’t quite picture it so I didn’t know what to expect. Standing here, about to step onto the Calipsoul , I am filled with delight as the kids all leap aboard. We aren’t the only family on board that day and as my group is fairly large, coming over on the shuttle service from the Beaches all-inclusive family resort, I had been worried about feeling crowded. Yet, what we discover is the perfect blend of being able to find ample areas for ourselves while also having the opportunity to meet other people as equally excited as we are.

Snorkeling lesson Once in the water, we are directed by the crew, who have joined us, where to swim and, along the way, they make sure to point out coral formations and beautiful fish ensuring we have an amazingly immersive experience (pun intended). I explore for ages and I am very excited as I brought my waterproof camera with me this time and aim to meet my self-imposed challenge of taking an underwater selfie with tropical fish. Although unsuccessful because they move pretty quickly, I still have a blast. Suddenly, someone is tapping me on my shoulder and I pop my head up to see one of the crew members guiding me back to the boat. Making my way back I realize that, as strong a swimmer as I am, I’m pretty happy to have the life vest on as it allows me to keep looking underwater while I make my way back without having to put in too much effort in keeping myself headed in the right direction so all my focus is on the magical world below me. Trampoline for the kids, hammocks for the adults We climb aboard and the teenagers head to the trampoline area (I was told that’s what it’s called). For people who may not normally hang out on a boat, this area serves an engineering purpose but is also a pretty cool place to just hang out on as it’s like a flat stretched-out hammock where you can just lay out and chill. I divest myself of the fins, mask, and vest and realize I’m pretty hungry! Lunch on the ocean Luckily, the food comes out and everyone piles up their plates with tropical fruit, delicious wraps and chips, and salsa, and we head for a sunny spot on the upper deck of the catamaran. We start chatting with other people and decide it’s just about the right time for the rum version of that delicious fruit punch (after all we’re in Jamaica, how can we pass up the delicious rum when no one is driving or diving). My husband opts for a cold Red Stripe instead and leans back to work on his tan. Learning Jamaican dance moves We hear music and a lot of laughter below and realize the trampoline is empty. I decide to leave my husband happily tanning and I follow the music only to discover a full-blown dance class, as the crew is teaching everyone the latest Jamaican dancehall dance moves. Although I feel a little self-conscious when I join in, that quickly fades away as everyone tries their best to match the expertise of the crew. Over on the right, two little girls have their own crew member showing them what to do and they catch on quickly, delighted grins lighting up their faces. I manage to muddle through and I’m pretty sure my sister is going to show these videos to everyone once we get back home for an evening full of a similar level of laughter at my expense. In that moment though, I don’t care. I feel the salt from the sea drying on my skin, my hair is a tousled mess and I’m dancing with my children in the middle of the Caribbean Sea. This, I think, is what happiness is.

First Sunreef 88 double deck catamaran launched

The first hull in the Sunreef 88 range of double deck sailing catamarans has been launched in Gdansk for a European owner, the Polish yard has announced.

This fully personalised multihull superyacht measures 26.82 metres LOA and was styled inside and out by the in-house team at  Sunreef Yachts .

In a statement, the Polish yard added that the design of the Sunreef 88 is “a great display of the shipyard’s non-conformist attitude and a genuine example of an avant-garde sailing catamaran concept”.

Captain Ian Sellers added: "She is a beautifully crafted, fully customised transoceanic catamaran, with superb quality and finish."

The design brief was focussed on three key themes: luxury, performance and privacy. To this end, the Sunreef 88 features more than 300 square metres of living space — an impressive figure for a yacht of this size, proving that bigger isn't always better .

This two-deck sailing yacht will feature an extensive flybridge with a central helm station and plenty of al fresco dining and relaxation spaces. Back aft, the cockpit features a central dining table with seating space for ten guests as well as a second sunbed, making good use of the Sunreef 88's 11.2 metre beam.

The in-house design includes sporty and dynamic exterior lines, as well as a fully customised interior layout. Key features include a mezzanine level in the saloon and a main-deck owner's cabin , which boasts superb views out to sea through panoramic windows.

Auxiliary power comes from a pair of 425hp engines drawing on a total fuel capacity of 8,000 litres, while her total sailplan is in excess of 345 square metres.

Sunreef added that the designers drew inspiration for this single-masted sailing yacht from the 35 metre flagship yacht Che , which was launched in 2010. The Sunreef 88 is the sixth superyacht from the Polish yard, which has also created the Sunreef 102 yacht Ipharra .

DEK KAT 2680

Dek kat 2680 model.

Meet the new standard in nearshore and offshore coastal high-performance catamaran deck boats. With it’s revolutionary twin tunnel hull design, the Dek Kat 2680 is changing the game for inshore fishing by providing a large, stable fishing platform without sacrificing creature comfort options for the family.

BETTER FEATURES

With ample in deck storage, minimal bow rise on acceleration coupled with a shallow water draft of approximately 12”, the Dek Kat is fast becoming an in-shore guide favorite. At 26’ 2” inches long with a beam of 8’6” there is no other bay boat on the market that comes close to her deck space. The twin tunnels provide a stable and comfortable ride even when the weather is not fully cooperative.

If live bait fishing is your game, the 2680 comes standard with two large in deck live/release wells with the option for additional live wells above deck in the forward seating or in our custom leaning post configuration.

MORE COMFORT

The Dek Kat 2680 is a semi-custom built boat which is just as comfortable on the bay waters chasing trout and redfish as it is at the sand bar with your family. Our oversized hard tops keep the family comfortable with the shade and you will find an abundance of seating throughout the boat, including our custom Adirondack style seat built into the console. Built for fishing and comfort cruising, the Dek Kat is truly one of the most versatile bay boat designs out there. It is ready for whatever your weekend desires are upon the water.

Savor Bonaire's breathtaking seascapes from the Sea Breeze double-decker power catamaran .

You'll stop at the famous pink salt flats and white mountains of salt. Your guide will explain the salt production process.

Offshore from the historical white slave huts, learn some Caribbean facts and discover why these centuries-old huts are built next to the sea.

The catamaran approaches the uninhabited island of Klein Bonaire by way of the famous Bonaire Marine Park . Its protected reef makes it a divers' paradise. From up close, you will see Bonaire's most attractive white-sand beach. Its name, of course, is No-Name Beach.

Follow the coastline for exceptional panoramic views, and don't forget to look down into the crystal-clear turquoise water. Oceanfront hotels and restaurants and beautiful Dutch Caribbean mansions line the way back to the port.

Maximum age is 70 years. Maximum height is 6'6". Maximum weight is 330 lbs. Guests who are more than five months pregnant or have a heart condition, asthma, or leg or chest injuries and/or recent surgery are not allowed to participate. Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations.

Some of the best decking materials include:

  • Wood: Cedar, redwood, and tropical hardwoods offer a classic look but require regular maintenance.
  • Pressure-Treated Lumber: Affordable pine that resists rot and insects but may need staining.
  • Composite Decking: Low-maintenance blend of wood fibers and recycled plastic, available in various colors.
  • PVC Decking: Synthetic option resistant to stains, scratches, and fading, but can be pricey.
  • Aluminum Decking: Lightweight, durable, rust-resistant, suitable for water areas, but more expensive.
  • Vinyl Decking: Low-maintenance, moisture, and rot-resistant, but quality varies.

It’s better to build a patio when:

  • Privacy is a priority: Patio provides a sense of privacy, especially when enclosed.
  • Budget and low maintenance are the priority: Patios are generally more cost-effective to build and require less maintenance.
  • The ground is flat: For even ground, constructing a patio is easier and more straightforward.

It’s better to build a deck when:

  • Scenic views are desired: Decks offer better views.
  • You are fine with obtaining building permits and inspections: Decks typically require permits and inspections due to their structural impact on the home.
  • The ground is uneven: If your backyard has slopes or uneven terrain, a deck can provide a stable and level outdoor space.

Burevestnik: a Russian air-launched anti-satellite system

By bart hendrickx monday, april 27, 2020.

In September 2018, an aircraft photographer noticed something interesting while observing activity at the Gromov Flight Research Institute in Zhukovsky near Moscow, sometimes called the “Russian Edwards Air Force Base.” What caught his attention was a MiG-31BM fighter jet with a large black missile suspended under its belly. While this specific aircraft had been seen before, the rocket was new. The pictures he posted on the Internet baffled observers: it seemed to be too big to be an air-to-air or an air-to-surface missile. It did appear to be the right size for an anti-satellite weapon.

The pictures brought back memories of a Soviet-era ASAT project called Kontakt, which comprised the MiG-31D aircraft and a missile of the MKB Fakel design bureau outfitted with a kinetic kill vehicle. Kontakt was the Soviet response to the American Air-Launched Miniature Vehicle or ASM-135A, which destroyed a US satellite in September 1985 after having been dropped from an F-15 fighter jet. Test flights of the MiG-31D with the missile were reportedly conducted in the late 1980s and early 1990s, but without targeting satellites.

So it looked like the new project could well be a reincarnation of Kontakt, as was speculated in many articles in the weeks following the release of the pictures. Backing up that idea were at least two statements made by Russian officials. In August 2009, the commander-in-chief of the Russian Air Force, Aleksandr Zelin, had declared that the MiG-31 was being upgraded to perform the same space defense tasks as in the Soviet days. About eight years later, in February 2017, a squadron commander of the Russian Aerospace Forces, Yevgeny Polyakov, was quoted as saying by the Russian Ministry of Defense’s Zvezda TV channel that a new missile was being developed for the MiG-31BM “capable of destroying targets in near-space.”

Analysis of publicly accessible online Russian sources now leaves little doubt that the MiG-31BM and the rocket are part of a broader ASAT project called Burevestnik (“Stormy Petrel”). Most likely, the rocket will not carry a kinetic kill vehicle like its Soviet-era predecessor, but will serve as a launch vehicle for small interceptor satellites that can approach and disable enemy satellites.

Burevestnik, a popular name in Russian culture, was also the name given by popular vote to a nuclear-powered cruise missile (9M730) not long after it was unveiled by President Vladimir Putin during his State of the Union address in March 2018. This has no connection whatsoever to the ASAT project.

The Burevestnik satellites

Burevestnik has never been discussed in Russia’s state-controlled media or even in specialized Russian space publications, but details about the project have slowly leaked out in recent years, mainly via openly available tender documentation and contracts on Russia’s government procurement website. These showed that the project began on September 1, 2011, with a government contract awarded to the Design Bureau of Machine Building (NPK KBM), a weapon manufacturer based in Kolomna (about 100 kilometers southeast of Moscow) that seems to be the overall coordinator of the project. At the end of that same month, NPK KBM signed a contract with a Moscow-based organization called the Central Scientific Research Institute of Chemistry and Mechanics (TsNIIKhM or CNIIHM), which in turn subcontracted work on satellites called Burevestnik-M.

Another phase in the project began on December 1, 2015, when NPK KBM received another government contract under which CNIIHM subsequently performed work on satellites named Burevestnik-KA-M. The difference between Burevestnik-M and Burevestnik-KA-M is not known, but a PowerPoint presentation (in Russian) of a Russian solar panel and battery manufacturer (PAO Saturn) that somehow ended up online in May last year clearly identified them as two different satellites. The hush-hush nature of the project as well as the background of some of the contractors involved strongly pointed to an ASAT role, as was discussed in an earlier article here (see “Russia’s secret satellite builder” , The Space Review, May 9, 2019).

The Burevestnik rocket

What has emerged from further research in recent weeks is that the scope of the Burevestnik project is much broader than earlier believed. First, it turned out that another component of the project is a solid-fuel rocket. A rocket by the name Burevestnik first showed up in the annual report of the Russian Academy of Sciences for 2015, where it was said to be one of several rockets for which new types of solid propellant were being developed. No further details on it emerged in the following years.

Analysis of procurement documents now shows that the rocket has the code name “293” and is built by NPO Iskra, a manufacturer of solid-fuel rocket motors in Perm (roughly 1,400 kilometers east of Moscow). Contracts for “293” (some of which also mention the name Burevestnik) refer back to the same September 1, 2011, contract awarded to NPK KBM that is also seen in documents on the Burevestnik satellites, leaving no doubt that the two are part of the same project. NPO Perm was assigned to “293” by NPK KBM on the very same day. Some of the contracts for “293” are based on an earlier government contract dated August 7, 2009, suggesting the roots of the project may go back even further.

Available contracts for the “293” rocket going back to 2013 regularly mention parts called 14D812, 14D813, and 14S47, which presumably are the rocket’s individual stages. 14S47 fits in a series of indexes for upper stages of space launch vehicles, strongly suggesting it performs the same role. Procurement documents placed online by NPO Iskra in recent months also show that the company began working in December 2018 on another rocket called “328”. The parts ordered for this indicate that it is a modified version of the “293” rocket, possibly using the new solid propellants mentioned in the 2015 Academy of Sciences report. Two companies linked to that work in the report are also seen in one of the contracts for the “328” rocket.

The MiG carrier aircraft

A search for the “293” rocket on Russia’s government procurement website subsequently revealed that it is an air-launched rocket to be carried aloft by a modified version of the MiG-31 aircraft. A contract (in Russian) signed by the Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG (RSK MiG) in August last year is for work “to determine the safety of operating Object 08 with Product 293 under the influence of naturally and artificially produced electromagnetic fields.” This work was to be completed in four months and would involve both a mock-up and “live” version of the rocket.

This is unmistakable evidence that “293”, the solid-fuel rocket built by NPO Iskra as part of Burevestnik, is designed to be carried by a MiG aircraft described as Object 08. This almost certainly is the MiG-31BM aircraft with number “81” that was seen carrying the mysterious black rocket in September 2018. One other RSK MiG contract (in Russian) that can be positively linked to Burevestnik refers to the aircraft more specifically as “Object 08/1”, a further indication that it is indeed MiG-31BM nr. 81.

The documentation links this work to a government contract awarded to NPK KBM for Burevestnik on December 1, 2015, and another one subsequently concluded between NPK KBM and RSK MiG on December 17, 2015. Therefore, it is in the same sequence of contracts that initiated work on the Burevestnik-KA-M satellites. However, RSK MiG’s involvement with Burevestnik began earlier than that. According to court documents (in Russian) published online late last year, NPK KBM and RSK MiG signed an initial contract for Burevestnik (described as “Burevestnik-MiG”) as early as January 23, 2012. This was presumably in the same chain of contracts that started work on the Burevestnik-M satellites and the “293” rocket back in 2011.

Burevestnik’s explosive payload

Other recently uncovered procurement documentation may provide conclusive evidence that the Burevestnik satellites are indeed ASAT interceptors. One contract (in Russian) for Burevestnik was signed in June 2017 between an organization called the Krasnoarmeysk Scientific Research Institute of Mechanization (KNIIM) and a company called OOO Expotekhvzryv. KNIIM is an institute in Krasnoarmeysk (a name derived from the Russian word for “Red Army”), which is situated about 60 kilometers northeast of Moscow. It is a leading manufacturer of ammunition and explosives, as can be seen in this profile of the institute.

Expotekhvzryv, based in Moscow, specializes in industrial safety control of “dangerous objects” (the word vzryv in the company’s name means “explosion”). Under the deal with KNIIM, it was to perform what was literally described as “industrial safety control of an experimental container for special products” and complete that work before the end of June 2017. According to the documentation, the work involved detonating the container to study the effects on its surroundings and on the container itself. The contract is clearly related to the Burevestnik-KA-M satellites because the documentation links the work to the December 2015 government contract that initiated that phase of the Burevestnik project and a subsequent one inked between CNIIHM and KNIIM on September 1, 2016.

The most logical interpretation of this information is that KNIIM developed some type of explosive charge for the Burevestnik satellites and that the tests conducted by Expotekhvzryv were needed to ensure that this material is safe for storage and transportation. While KNIIM seems to be the manufacturer of this payload, it should be noted that CNIIHM itself probably also has the necessary expertise in the field. Back in the 1960s and 1970s, a team at CNIIHM led by Kirill N. Shamshev devised two types of explosive charges that were carried by experimental interceptor satellites called IS (“Satellite Destroyer”). These were detonated when the satellites came in the vicinity of specially launched target satellites. According to its former website, CNIIHM has a “Center of Ammunition and Special Chemistry” and this may very well play a role in this work as well.

As is clear from several technical papers and patents, a number of Russian institutes (including CNIIHM) have also done research on non-destructive technology for co-orbital ASATs, mostly involving the use of finely dispersed particles that could presumably disable satellite sensors or cause other damage. Similar technology has also been studied to conceal satellites from potential enemy ASAT interceptors under a program known as Vual (see “Self-defense in space: protecting Russian spacecraft from ASAT attacks” , The Space Review, July 16, 2018). However, there are is no convincing proof that any of this work is connected to Burevestnik.

Possible on-orbit tests

It is perfectly possible that Burevestnik satellites have already been tested in orbit. Between 2013 and 2019, Russia launched six mysterious satellites from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome that showed similar in-orbit behavior and transmitted on identical radio frequencies, indicating they share a common platform. They were called Kosmos-2491, 2499, 2504, 2521, 2535, 2536, and 2543. All were launched as co-passengers with other payloads, the first three on the Rockot launch vehicle (now retired) and the later ones on the Soyuz-2.1v, the lightest rocket in the Soyuz launch vehicle family (without the first-stage strap-on boosters and carrying NK-33 engines inherited from the Soviet-era N-1 moon rocket.) All except the first one performed rendezvous and proximity operations with other objects launched on the same mission, either the rocket’s upper stage or other satellites.

Some of these satellites are likely part of a project called Nivelir, started in the same month as Burevestnik (September 2011) and also managed by CNIIHM. The Nivelir satellites are believed to be intended for on-orbit inspection of other satellites and are known to share at least two design features with the Burevestnik satellites, namely 4LI-20 lithium-ion batteries of PAO Saturn and MSKV84 fuel tanks of NIIMash, which likely feed K50-10.6 hydrazine monopropellant thrusters of OKB Fakel on both types of satellites. Because they seem to use a common bus, it is hard to tell which of the satellites belong to which program.

Two of the satellites (Kosmos-2521 and 2543) were deployed from larger “parent satellites” built by NPO Lavochkin (Kosmos-2519 and 2542). Having the military index 14F150, these are also part of the Nivelir project and themselves seem to be used for space situational awareness. Kosmos-2542 raised concern in US Defense Department circles earlier this year when it made several relatively close passes to the American reconnaissance satellite USA 245 in an apparent attempt to take detailed pictures of the satellite.

While most of the six satellites seem to have performed missions comparable to those of American and Chinese inspection satellites, two experiments conducted during these missions seem to have nothing to do with inspection. In October 2017, Kosmos-2521 itself deployed a small subsatellite (Kosmos-2523) that immediately lowered its perigee by 100 kilometers and has remained inert ever since without ever coming close to another satellite. Speaking to Time magazine last February, Gen. John Raymond, the commander of the U.S. Space Force, likened these satellites to Russian nesting dolls and described the subsatellite as a “high-speed projectile.” Possibly, Kosmos-2523 was another top-secret satellite of CNIIHM identified as Napryazheniye, the purpose of which is unclear.

Another puzzling event occurred last year during the mission of Kosmos-2535 and 2536, launched in July 2019 along with two other satellites (Kosmos-2537 and 2538) that are probably used for calibration of ground-based radars. About two weeks after launch, Kosmos-2535 and 2536 began a lengthy series of close encounters that continued until earlier this year. The first of those, in early August, was actually reported by the Russian Ministry of Defense, which described the two objects as an “inspection satellite” and a “registering satellite.” They were reportedly on a mission to study the effects of “artificial and natural space factors” on satellites and also to test technology to protect satellites and service them in orbit. More specifically, the equipment on the inspector satellite was designed to study the effects on the registering satellite of “space debris, electron and proton radiation of the Earth’s outer natural radiation belt, protons and heavy charged particles, solar and galactic cosmic rays.”

Then, in mid-October, objects labeled as “Kosmos-2535 debris” started gradually appearing in the catalog of space objects maintained by the United States Strategic Command. In all, 24 such objects were registered. The catalog does not disclose when exactly the satellite generated this debris, but orbital analysis has traced most of it back to a close encounter between Kosmos-2535 and 2536 in late September (which would mean the debris could have come from either satellite).

The debris wound up in widely scattered orbits with altitudes ranging from less than 400 to more than 1,000 kilometers, while the two satellites themselves have been circling the Earth in roughly circular orbits slightly over 600 kilometers above the Earth. This means it must have been created by some sort of energetic event. Both of the satellites did continue maneuvering afterwards, meaning that neither was rendered inoperable.

This could lead one to conclude that it was either a failed ASAT test or not an ASAT test at all. However, numerous other scenarios are possible as well, including one where the Russians elected to test an explosive charge without destroying the satellites in order to minimize the amount of debris and not attract undue attention to the mission. It could, for instance, have been ejected in a canister and detonated at a safe distance, with one or both of the satellites observing the event. It is also possible that one or both satellites carried protective material enabling them to survive the event and even sensors to detect possible impacts, like many of the target satellites used in the Soviet IS project. Such scenarios would still be in line with two of the mission objectives given in the official Russian statement on the mission, namely studying the effects of space debris and testing technology to protect satellites in orbit.

Future outlook

If Burevestnik has already been tested in orbit, it was launched as a co-passenger on a conventional ground-based rocket. However, this is likely to change in the future. As is clear from the evidence presented above, the satellites, the “293” rocket, and the MiG-31BM aircraft are part of one and the same project. Most likely, the air-launched “293” rocket will serve as a launch vehicle for future Burevestnik satellites. In Russian terminology, all these components would be described as belonging to the same “space complex,” a word used for the combination of the satellites, the launch vehicle, and all the ground-based infrastructure needed to support them. In some official documents, Burevestnik has been more specifically called “a space security complex,” a fitting term for an ASAT project (it has also been applied in one document to a project called Kalina, a ground-based laser system designed to blind or dazzle optical instruments of satellites). The index for the Burevestnik space complex is 14K168.

The idea that “293” is a satellite launch vehicle is corroborated by the fact that the index for one of its stages (14S47) is similar to that of some upper stages of space launch vehicles. Moreover, plans to use the MiG-31 as a satellite launch platform are not new. They were first put forward by the MiG design bureau in the late 1990s and culminated in a 2005 Russian/Kazakh proposal called Ishim to equip the aircraft with a three-stage solid-fuel rocket capable of placing 160-kilogram satellites into 300-kilometer orbits with a 46-degree inclination. With a maximum speed of Mach 2.8 and a service ceiling of more than 20 kilometers, the MiG-31 is an ideal platform for such missions.

With the Burevestnik satellites probably weighing around 100 kilograms or less, a rocket the size of “293” should be capable of placing them into orbit from a MiG-31, although potential targets would probably be limited to satellites in relatively low orbits, primarily reconnaissance satellites. The use of an air-launched rocket instead of a ground-based launch vehicle offers several advantages for ASAT missions. First, not being tied to a specific launch site, air-launched rockets can use a much broader variety of launch azimuths and, consequently, send satellites into a wide range of orbital inclinations. Second, they can be prepared for launch at short notice (certainly solid-fuel rockets like “293”) and away from the prying eyes of reconnaissance satellites, giving the enemy little warning time. By contrast, the Soyuz-2.1v, the lightest launch vehicle in Russia’s current rocket fleet, is a liquid-fuel launch vehicle that needs two days of launch preparations on a single available pad. In addition to that, the Soyuz-2.1v (with a payload capacity of 2.8 tons to low Earth orbit) would be far oversized for launching a single Burevestnik satellite. Both the “293” rocket and its apparent successor (“328”) could potentially also be used to launch other small military satellites on quick-response missions, a capability that the US military has been seeking for a long time without much success.

All this does raise the question why dedicated infrastructure for Burevestnik is being built at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome. This infrastructure is identified in procurement documents as “Object 7511/4,” As can be inferred from recent procurement documents, a new contract for the construction work was awarded by the Ministry of Defense just last December, clearly showing it is not yet finished. One possible explanation is that Burevestnik flights using the MiG-31BM will be staged from Plesetsk’s airfield (known as “Pero”), benefiting from the cosmodrome’s infrastructure for storage and preparation of rockets and satellites. Another, much more remote possibility is that “293” has a two-stage air-launched version (consisting of the 14D813 and 14S47 stages) that can take off from a multitude of air bases and a three-stage ground-launched version (consisting of the 14D812, 14D813, and 14S47 stages) that will be based at Plesetsk. It is hard to tell whether the rocket seen in the photos taken at Zhukovsky has two or three stages. Similarly, America’s Pegasus air-launched rocket had a ground-based “sister rocket” (Taurus/Minotaur-C), which essentially consisted of a Pegasus mounted on top of the first stage of a Peacekeeper ICBM. However, there are no clear signs that any launch infrastructure for such a rocket is being built at Plesetsk.

Other ground-based infrastructure for Burevestnik, named “Object 7511/3,” is under construction near Pervomayskoye in the Tambov province, about 450 kilometers southeast of Moscow. This is the location of a military base (nr. 14272) primarily used for the long-term storage of rockets awaiting shipment to the launch site.

The control center for Burevestnik missions is likely situated right next to the headquarters of Russia’s space surveillance network in Noginsk-9 (also known as Dubrovo), a small town about 60 kilometers east of Moscow. Noginsk-9 was also home to the control center for the Soviet-era co-orbital ASAT missions. A facility in Noginsk-9 known as “Object 3006M” has been linked in building contracts to both Burevestnik and Nivelir. It will probably be fed with targeting data by a network of space surveillance radars and optical telescopes stationed across Russia. Autonomous satellite navigation equipment known to have been developed for Burevestnik satellites by MKB Kompas should also help guide the satellites to their targets relatively quickly. Even with 1970s technology, the Soviet-era IS interceptor satellites demonstrated the ability to reach their targets on the first orbit after launch.

All the construction work is a sign that Burevestnik is not merely seen as an experimental system, but one that Russia intends to place on operational stand-by. When that will occur is hard to tell. The Burevestnik project has been underway for almost a decade but, like many other Russian space projects, was probably hit hard by the Western-imposed sanctions that complicated the delivery of foreign-built electronic components for the Russian space industry. Despite Russia’s policy of “import substitution,” even highly classified Russian military satellites remain very reliant on Western electronics. This is illustrated by one 2016 contract for the delivery of electronic components for Burevestnik satellites, which listed a total of 457 foreign electronic components versus just 45 Russian-built components.

Still, it does look like one or more Burevestnik satellites have already been tested in space, with more such test flights (using the Soyuz-2.1v) possibly yet to come. As for the “293” rocket, the one seen in the September 2018 photos was presumably a mock-up, but one of the earlier quoted RKS MiG contracts signed in August 2019 strongly suggests that a “live” version is undergoing captive carry tests by now. A CNBC article published in September 2018 quoted “three sources with direct knowledge of a U.S. intelligence report” as saying that the MiG-31BM spotted shortly before was believed to be “a mock-up of an anti-satellite weapon that will be ready for warfare by 2022.”

Other Russian ASAT projects

As large in scope as Burevestnik appears to be, it is only one of several ASAT projects that Russia is currently working on. The most advanced of these is Nudol, a ground-launched direct-ascent ASAT missile built by OKB Novator that is believed to have made at least ten test flights from Plesetsk since 2014, without destroying targets in space. The latest of these took place on April 15, prompting an immediate response from the US Space Command’s Gen. John Raymond, who regards it as “further proof of Russia’s hypocritical advocacy of outer space arms control proposals designed to restrict the capabilities of the United States while clearly having no intention of halting their counterspace weapons programs.” Recently gathered evidence indicates that another, possibly more capable missile may be under development for Nudol at the Moscow-based MIT Corporation.

Other likely ASAT systems under development are ground-based and air-based systems to dazzle or blind satellite optical systems ( Kalina and Sokol-Eshelon ) and ground-based and space-based systems for electronic warfare (Tirada-2S and Ekipazh ). In November 2017, a Russian military official also disclosed the existence of a “mobile anti-satellite complex” called Rudolf, about which nothing is known. Another satellite under development at CNIIHM called Numizmat will probably carry a hard-to-detect ultrawide-band noise radar for proximity operations and may also have an ASAT-related role. An up-to-date overview of Russian ASAT systems is given in the latest edition of the Secure World Foundation’s annual report Global Counterspace Capabilities: An Open-Source Assessment .

The co-existence of several ASAT projects indicates they are designed to fulfill complementary roles, possibly targeting different types of satellites in different types of orbits. Similarly, in the 1980s the Soviet Union worked on a plethora of ASAT systems , each of which had its own well-defined tasks in various possible war scenarios. The collapse of the Soviet Union prevented any of those from reaching operational status, but by all indications Russia now once again has a sustained program to develop a broad range of counterspace capabilities, whatever the motives for that may be.
