"Bravo zulu to U.S. Coast Guard Station Pensacola!" The U.S. Coast Guard said in a tweet after a patrol crew was diverted to rescue nine boaters whose vessel started sinking near Pensacola Pass, Fla.

All are safe and sound after nine people abandoned a sinking boat off the Florida coast, thanks to a quick response from the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard said it rescued all nine boaters from the water after the recreational vessel became submerged about two miles south of Pensacola Pass on Saturday.

At 10:47 a.m., the Coast Guard received a mayday call from the 50-foot Sport Fisher Slow Motion, according to the agency. A boat crew already patrolling the area arrived on the scene less than 10 minutes later, and eventually brought the boaters back to Big Lagoon State Park in Pensacola.

None of the nine boaters reported any medical concerns, said the Coast Guard.

The boat had already sank by the time the rescue crew arrived, a spokesperson with the Coast Guard told NPR.

Eight of the boaters were wearing life jackets at the time and one was not, said Petty Officer 3rd Class Riley Perkofski.

"It sounds like they hit something," Perkofski said.

He noted that there is a sunken vessel-turned manmade reef in the area, as well as other shallow parts coming out of the nearby jetty, but could not confirm the cause of the boat's submersion.

The agency is investigating the incident he said, adding that "investigations can take months and sometimes a year."

Video: 13 people rescued as 37m yacht Serena III sinks off Florida coast

A 36.80 metre explorer yacht named Serena III has sunk 13 miles off the coast of Florida. The Coast Guard rescued 13 people from the sinking yacht but the vessel itself could not be saved.

Sea Tow marine assistance said the yacht is now unrecoverable. The yacht went under just 25 minutes after the last person was taken off, disappearing in water that is over 350 metres deep.

The yacht began sinking on Monday evening (January 25) and the United States Coast Guard responded to the distress call. The rescue party included several boats and a helicopter, as well as other nearby vessels that came to help.

The 13 passengers on board Serena III were taken to the United States Coast Guard station in Miami Beach, but no medical concerns were reported. An investigation is now underway to discover why the yacht was taking on water.

Sea Tow arrived on scene to try and save the yacht. A report from the marine assistance company said, “our crews gave it a valiant effort to arrive on the scene with multiple vessels and pumps but she was too far gone. We were able to recover a jet ski, inflatable tender and liferaft."

“It just gradually took on more and more water and then it went down by the stern and rolled,” said Sea Tow Captain Tim Morgan. “Then it went under the waves.”

“The amount of water it was taking on and how quickly the boat sank, really, I don’t think there was much anybody would have been able to do,” Morgan added.

Serena III was a custom built construction by H. Dantas Construções E Reparos Navais in Brazil. The yacht was launched in 2010 but only delivered in 2012.

Sea Tow operates in over 120 locations worldwide. Earlier in January Sea Tow Puerto Rico was able to rescue a sportfish yacht that hit a reef near the Caribbean island.

14 boaters rescued off Florida gulf coast in 1 week, Coast Guard says

  • Emily Wunderlich Times staff

It was a busy week for the U.S. Coast Guard in St. Petersburg.

Seventeen distress and marine safety calls led to the rescue of 14 boaters since April 12, Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg said in a news release Friday.

It started around 11 p.m. April 12, when Coast Guard watchstanders received a mayday call from three people reporting that their 47-foot commercial fishing boat was sinking 1 mile southwest of John’s Pass. The three people were found floating next to their boat, which was partially submerged and run aground, about 11:10 p.m. They were taken to John’s Pass Marina for care from emergency medical services.

The boaters worked with commercial salvage to coordinate the recovery of their vessel, and 605 gallons of diesel were pumped from the fuel tank Monday. The vessel was towed to Snug Harbor Boatworks on Tuesday, and no pollution was reported, the news release states.

Also on Monday, watchstanders received a distress call from three people aboard a disabled 20-foot vessel about 22 miles west of Egmont Key around 3:30 p.m. A boat crew from Coast Guard Station Cortez found the vessel around 7:45 p.m. and towed it to Egmont Channel. A search-and-rescue boat crew from Eckerd College towed the vessel from Egmont Channel to the Fort De Soto Boat Ramp.

On Tuesday, dispatchers from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office reported a person aboard a “disabled personal watercraft” near the Courtney Campbell Causeway around 3:30 p.m. A boat crew from Coast Guard Station St. Petersburg retrieved the person and towed their vessel to the Courtney Campbell Boat Ramp.

On Thursday, Pinellas sheriff’s office dispatchers again contacted the Coast Guard — this time for three people whose boat ran out of fuel about 14 miles west of Egmont Key around 1:45 p.m. A Coast Guard crew from St. Petersburg found the three people aboard the 21-foot vessel around 3:15 p.m. and towed it to Egmont Channel. An Eckerd College search-and-rescue boat crew towed the vessel from Egmont Channel to Fort De Soto Boat Ramp.

Around 2 p.m. Thursday, Coast Guard watchstanders received an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon alert and mayday call from four people aboard a 30-foot vessel 30 miles west of Venice. An aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater found the four people around 3 p.m. A boat crew from Coast Guard Station Cortez fixed the steering and escorted the vessel to Station Cortez.

No injuries were reported in any of the incidents, the Coast Guard said. In a statement, Capt. Michael P. Kahle, commander of Sector St. Petersburg, stressed the importance of having a communication device on your boat.

“Having a working marine VHF radio, a well-charged cellphone in a waterproof case and a properly registered EPIRB and PLB , can and will help save your life in a time of distress,” Kahle said in the statement.

Teams search for 20 people whose boat sank off Florida as Hurricane Ian loomed

Four people swam to shore and three were rescued but others remain missing, officials say

A search is under way for more than 20 people off the coast of Florida after their boat sank shortly before Hurricane Ian made landfall on Wednesday.

Four Cuban migrants swam to shore in the Florida Keys and three others were rescued from the ocean after their boat sank on Wednesday, but others are still missing, officials said.

The four Cubans reached Stock Island, just east of Key West, and reported their vessel sank because of inclement weather, according to a tweet from Walter N Slosar, chief patrol agent with US Customs and Border Protection.

The US Coast Guard initiated a search for 23 passengers and managed to find three survivors about two miles (3km) south of the island chain, officials said.

“Our crews took a calculated risk to brave the tropical storm force winds going through the Keys on the chance of people being alive in the water and being able to bring them home,” said petty officer Nicole Groll, a coastguard spokeswoman.

The survivors were taken to a local hospital for symptoms of exhaustion and dehydration. Air crews continued to search for the remaining migrants.

Hurricane Ian made landfall on Florida’s west coast on Wednesday afternoon as a category 4 storm with 150mph wind and storm surges of up to 18ft. In the past 24 hours the storm has carved a path across the Gulf of Mexico, knocking out all power in Cuba and leaving a trail of destruction with violent winds and flooding when it hit the island on Tuesday.

The storm made landfall as a category 3 storm on the island’s western end, devastating Pinar del Río province, where much of the tobacco used for Cuba’s cigars is grown.

State media reported two deaths in the province: a woman killed by a falling wall and another by a collapsed roof. The local government station TelePinar reported heavy damage at the main hospital in Pinar del Río city, tweeting photos of collapsed ceilings and downed trees. By early Wednesday, the state electricity provider said it had begun to restore power.

The hurricane hit Cuba at a time of dire economic crisis. Blackouts and long-running shortages of food, medicine and fuel were likely to complicate efforts to recover from Ian.

On Tuesday, seven migrants from Cuba were taken into custody after they made it to shore in Pompano Beach, Florida, US authorities said.

“Do not risk your life by attempting this journey at sea. Storm surge along with King tide can create treacherous sea conditions even after a storm passes,” officials said on Twitter on Tuesday when announcing those detentions. King tides are exceptionally high and can cause tidal flooding.

Sheriff spots boat sinking off Florida Keys, 5 rescued

Chris Gothner , Digital Journalist

MARATHON, Fla. – Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay spotted a sinking boat as he drove along U.S. 1 Thursday, leading a deputy to rescue five men from the waterlogged vessel, according to a sheriff’s office spokesperson.

MCSO spokesperson Adam Linhardt said Ramsay was driving near mile marker 46 just before 3 p.m. when he saw the boat sinking near the Old Seven Mile Bridge with a dive flag out.

Linhardt said the sheriff alerted dispatchers and a marine patrol deputy responded in about a minute to rescue the men and get them to shore in Marathon.

“I’m happy to report everyone appears to be OK,” Ramsay said in a sheriff’s office news release.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the sinking, Linhardt said.

3 PEOPLE RESCUED AFTER BOAT SINKS IN KEY LARGO, FLORIDA

yacht sinks in florida

A Coast Guard Station Islamorada boat crew rescued three people last Sunday after their 24-foot vessel sank near Angelfish Creek in North Key Largo.

According to the Coast Guard, a person aboard the 24-foot vessel contacted a Coast Guard Station Islamorada watch stander via cellphone at 5:58 p.m. stating their vessel was taking on water near Carysfort Lighthouse.

The Coast Guard arrived and found three people with life jackets clinging onto the capsized vessel. The people were transferred to Gilbert’s Marina. All three people were wearing life jackets. No injuries were reported.

“It is important that mariners have adequate life jackets, flares, and the required safety gear,” said Adam Graham, Coast Guard Sector Key West search and rescue watchstander. “It is also important to have a working VHF-FM radio because a cell phone doesn’t always work.”

A commercial salvage company recovered the vessel.

I work in the boat yard next to the vanquish delivery facility and I know exactly what happened as I was able to speak directly with the crew member who was on board?: One of the crew members had a bad stomach and had to use the head but the head had not been prepared for you use or tested and was actually marked. Do not use but because he had multiple instances of diarrhea he removed the lockout and tag out and use the head and then try to use the sea water flush. And when he opened the valve, what he didn't realize was that it wasn't connected to the back of the head and I'm not sure the mechanics of it. But there's another hose that started causing a siphoning effect and even when he closed the head valve that he'd opened, water kept pouring in and I'm not sure if it was from the head itself or from a hose behind it. But it had to do with the fact that the head had been marked and tagged not to use and this guy with a bad stomach who knows had a bad burrito or something. Anyway, he still works there but he sank a boat.

Popular food boat capsizes and sinks in Florida

By Jordan Freiman

Updated on: May 9, 2022 / 4:13 PM EDT / CBS News

A popular floating restaurant capsized and sank in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Sunday. Nobody was injured, but the owner of Jay's Sandbar Food Boat said the vessel is a "total loss."

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue said that crews responded to a call of a vessel sinking.

"Upon arrival crews found the iconic Jay's floating food truck rapidly sinking," FLFR said in a statement. "An assessment of the scene indicated that there were no injuries and no immediate hazards to the environment."

According to the owner , Jeremy Lycke, the boat's stabilizer pontoon "snapped." A worker said the wake from a passing boat is what caused it to snap, CBS Miami reported . Once the outrigger broke, the boat capsized and sank in under five minutes, according to CBS Miami.

Two people, a hostess and chef, were on board at the time the boat sank, Lycke told CBS News.

"I'm devastated of course, but my crew got out safely and nobody got hurt," Lycke wrote on Facebook, adding that the boat sank in "just 4 feet of water."

Jay's Sandbar Food Boat was a popular floating restaurant that would deliver food to boaters and jet skiers in Fort Lauderdale. The boat had been in operation for three years, according to the owner's Facebook post announcing the sinking.

"We will rebuild, somehow, now first, we got to remove her shallow grave," Lycke wrote. He told CBS News he suffered some $85,000 in damages, but is hoping to rebuild the boat and open a land-based location.

FLFR said Lycke has contacted a private salvage company to refloat and remove the boat from the Intracoastal Waterway "in the upcoming days."

39 Missing After Boat Sinks Off Coast In US, "Human Smuggling" Suspected

The Coast Guard in Miami said it had received a report "from a good Samaritan" who rescued a man "clinging to a capsized vessel approximately 45 miles east of Fort Pierce Inlet."

The US Coast Guard launched a search for 39 people reported missing when a boat capsized off the coast of Florida in a "suspected human smuggling venture," it said Tuesday.

The survivor said the boat had left Bimini in the Bahamas on Saturday night but encountered rough weather and capsized.

"According to the survivor, no one was wearing a life jacket," the statement said.

"Coast Guard air and surface asset crews are actively searching for people in the water. This is a suspected human smuggling venture," said the statement, which was posted on Twitter.

An image released by the Coast Guard shows the capsized vessel in the water with a man straddling the hull.

Human smugglers are known to use the Bahamas, a group of islands lying near the Florida coast, as a jumping off point for getting people, many from other Caribbean countries such as Haiti, into the United States.

Bimini, the westernmost district of the Bahamas and its closest point to the mainland, is approximately 130 miles (217 kilometers) from Fort Pierce Inlet.

On Friday, 32 people were rescued after a boat capsized some five miles west of Bimini in another suspected human smuggling attempt, according to the US Coast Guard and the Royal Bahamas Defence Force.

The US Coast Guard tweeted that its vessels patrol the waters around Haiti, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas "to ensure the safety of life at sea."

"Navigating the seas in overloaded and less than seaworthy vessels is extremely dangerous and can result in loss of life," it warned.

The Coast Guard rescued three people from a sinking sailboat just north of the St. Mary's Inlet entrance Sunday afternoon.

Last Chance, a 26-foot sailboat, radioed "mayday" after running aground. The boat began taking on water, prompting the trio to put on their life jackets and get into a dingy.

A Coast Guard Station Mayport boat crew rescues three people after their 26-foot sailboat sank near St. Marys Inlet, Georgia, Feb. 4, 2024. The boat crew located the three boaters in a dingy and transported them to awaiting EMS at Dee Dee Bartels Boat Ramp in Fernandina Beach. Nassau County deputies from Florida and several good Samaritans were able to make it to the sinking ship before the Coast Guard and rescued the crew. They were taken back ashore and checked out by awaiting EMS.

Before sinking, the Coast Guard says the boat faced 20 mph winds and three to five-foot waves.

Local news | boat sinks and leaks fuel for 3 days in fort lauderdale’s las olas isles.

Doug Thron was strolling back to his houseboat on the Isle of Venice in Fort Lauderdale when he got a strong whiff of something ghastly.

“I thought ‘My God, what’s that smell?’” Thron said Tuesday.

It turned out to be diesel fuel from a boat that sank to the bottom of the canal on Saturday.

“I couldn’t even stay on my houseboat for the last few days because the smell is so strong,” Thron said. “The whole neighborhood is up in arms about it.”

Worried about the fuel spreading and possibly killing marine life, Thron says he and his neighbors called “everyone under the sun,” including the local fire department, the U.S. Coast Guard and officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Finally, on Tuesday afternoon, Thron says he was relieved to see the salvage company Tow Boat U.S.A. show up to remove the leaking boat.

Fort Lauderdale firefighters checked things out on Saturday after getting a complaint about the boat sinking, Fire Chief Stephen Gollan said

The firefighters alerted the Coast Guard.

“At that time, there were no leaks,” Gollan said. “On Sunday they went out again and noticed it was beginning to leak.”

Coast Guard officials were in touch with the owner by Monday, Gollan said.

“Tow Boat U.S.A. told us on Monday they were still waiting on approval from the owner to move the boat,” Gollan said.

In the meantime, the salvage company is cleaning up the immediate area where the boat sank, Gollan said.

But with tidal surge, some of the diesel fuel and possibly motor oil might have spread into nearby waterways, Gollan said. If the damage is widespread, Gollan said the city would hire a subcontractor to handle the cleanup and bill the owner. But it’s too soon to say if that’s the case, he said.

“We won’t know until the boat’s gone,” Gollan said.

The boat wasn’t towed away until just before 5 p.m.

Thron says he was stunned that no one took action right away.

“A boat like that could probably hold a few hundred gallons of fuel,” Thron said. “I would have thought in this day and age, there would have been a rapid response. To me, it was a huge deal. If a boat is leaking gas into a waterway, the government should be able to step in and remove it and figure out who pays later. Now the fuel is all over the canal.”

But government officials are required to first find the owner, said Mark Ercolin, an attorney specializing in maritime law.

“Here’s how it would usually go,” he said. “ Boat sinks . First question is, who owns the boat? If they can’t find the owner, it becomes a big question of who pays the salvage company. … It’s not done for free.”

Thron says he’s worried about all the fish and manatees that swim up and down the canal. He hasn’t seen any since the boat started leaking on Sunday.

Nearby resident Suzee Bailey wondered why the city didn’t put up signs warning people about the fuel spill.

“We have signs when there’s heavy flooding,” Bailey said. “Do you think it’s healthy to be paddle boarding through those areas? People can smell the fumes, but what about what you can’t smell? My first concern is public safety. How can you worry about what you don’t know about?”
