A Short History

1952 – 1984 approx..

Late in January 1952 eleven people met in the foreshore pavilion at Warneet. They agreed on the need for a boating and angling club for Westernport. On the 8 February 1952 WMYC was formed and on 8 March 1952 there were 36 people at the meeting to elect office-bearers. This established Westernports first yacht club. During the first year there were at least 37 meetings and 25 working bees held, two significant things were happening; one was the beginning of the clubhouse and the second was unifying the community in a major project. Through the 1950s Warneet was a growing water sport centre. Victorian championship yacht races were held in various classes, and the Westernport Challenge began here. WMYC saw the need for a slipway and a better boating jetty and at the end of the 1960s, after seemingly endless negotiations, a launching ramp and the new 600 – feet Warneet South Jetty were built. The Warneet South Slipway Club was formed to run these facilities. The WMYC Clubhouse and its facilities became part of the Warneet Disaster Plan. In 1969 the club established radio cover for the whole of the bay and extended it to a twenty four hour watch in 1973, in 1974 this was upgraded to provide communications with yachts in Bass Strait. These radio facilities were in the Tamo house. Bill & Alwyn Tamo had been mainstays of the club since the early days and are now life members. Bill was Commodore from 1956 – 1972. The clubs programs have attracted interest from well beyond Westernport. The annual Warneet Around French Island Race (WAFIR) has attracted fleets of well over 200 competing yachts and is still a very strong race to this day. Four Warneet multihulls sailed in the Queenscliff – Devonport Race and in 1977 Gary Bodworth’s  Shilo won Line Honours. In 1979 the Multihull Yacht Club of Victoria merged with WMYC and in 1984 the club was incorporated as the Warneet Motor yacht Club.

Renovated Yacht Club opens its doors

warneet motor yacht club

By Brendan Rees

Warneet Motor Yacht Club’s (WMYC) new-look $1.2 million upgrade has officially opened, offering members and the public a bigger renovated space.

Casey Balla Balla Ward councillor Geoff Ablett joined Hastings MP Neale Burgess in opening the Yacht Club and Public Hall along with members of the community on Saturday 15 December.

The refurbished building, which was first built 1952, was funded by the City of Casey, and includes an extension and renovation of all areas, including a large veranda overlooking wetlands on both levels, the renewal of all existing amenities, an internal lift and a purpose-built community space with cooking facilities.

Casey manager of active communities Callum Pattie said the WMYC was managed by a volunteer committee, and council had a Memorandum of Understanding with the club that the upgraded ground floor facilities must be made available for community use.

“Council looks forward to seeing this rejuvenated facility enjoyed by both the club and local residents for social and community events for many years to come,” he said.

Commodore Cameron Brown said the WMYC had been “given a new lease on life.”

“The new facility is now a bright, modern and inviting building coupled with the perfect location,” he said.

Located on the edge of Western Port, Mr Brown said the WMYC has been a meeting place for the community around the coastal villages with the club home to many community groups.

“It will continue to be the heart of the local community, and a great meeting place for locals and neighbours to catch up,” he said.

Mr Brown added the downstairs hall would be available for private functions, meetings, and conferences.

Hastings MP Neale Burgess congratulated the hard work and dedication of the community for their “wonderful achievement.”

Are you looking for a scenic coastal place to go for a picnic or BBQ? Perhaps you’re looking for a place to throw in the fishing line and go for a short stroll along the coastal track. Look no further. Warneet is a gorgeous picturesque tiny coastal village. Offering a great spot for fishing and has lovely places to spend the day having a picnic or BBQ. The word Warneet is an aboriginal name for river and was formerly known as Crouch’s Beach.

The Warneet South Jetty offers a perfect place to throw in the line. For those with a boat you’ve got the boat ramp next to the jetty. If you don’t have your own boat there are boats for hire near the boat ramp. Ring in advance to ensure the boat hire is open to avoid disappointment. On our visit it was closed, however it was just as restrictions were easing for Covid-19.

  • Warneet Coastal Track

The coastal track is a very easy flat walk offering scenic coastal views. Along the approximately 1.2km stretch starting off with views of the Warneet South Jetty. This is also a great place to try your luck at catching salmon. On our visit fishermen were reeling in the fish. It was a delight to see.

From the Warneet South Jetty you stroll past the Warneet Motor Yacht Club which opened in 1952. The track hugs the Warneet coastline offering picturesque views and great places to sit and take in the ambience. Watch the boats bobbing up and down as you take in the fresh coastal air. As you walk along there are a couple of information boards to help save the birds of Western Port Bay.

The track then takes you to the Warneet North Jetty which unfortunately you cannot go on as the jetty is in need of repair. Petitions are in place to save the jetty. Lets hope they succeed as it truly is a beautiful landmark. Here you can sit and take in the beauty or continue strolling along the track which winds it’s way past the mangroves to the footy oval and tennis courts. On our visit the wattles were just coming out in flower, they looked beautiful.

warneet motor yacht club

Just before the tennis courts there is a lookout offering great views over the Rutherford Inlet. Here you can see the boats in the distance as your eye is drawn over the coastal vegetation. This brings you to the end of the Warneet Coastal Track. What a beautiful place to end up. As you look across the waterway you can just see Cannons Creek .

From here you can return the same way you came. If you are looking to walk further you can continue along through the Warneet Nature Reserve to Blind Bight.

Warneet South Jetty Picnic/BBQ area

If you have kids there are picnic tables over looking the beach and jetty. With a BBQ and a small playground for the kids to enjoy it’s a perfect spot for family and friends to gather. Nearby there are public toilets.

Warneet North Jetty Picnic/BBQ area

A little further along the track which you can either drive or walk to is another area with picnic and BBQ facilities. Again there are scenic views as you enjoy your time with family and friends. The area over looks the Warneet North Jetty which was built in 1956. Petitions have been held to save the old jetty. Sadly, due to parts of the jetty missing you are unable to walk on it.

Warneet Reserve Picnic Area

Overlooking the Warneet Reserve there are picnic tables. A lovely place to set up lunch as you watch the kids kick the footy or soccer ball on the oval, or perhaps watch kids of all ages play cricket. Whatever sport they’re/you’re into it’s a beautiful place to unwind.

Our experience

We had a lovely afternoon strolling along. It is a place we recommend you to go if you are trying to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. With Covid-19 it’s a perfect place to escape people and be out in the fresh coastal sea air.

We grabbed take away which was very yummy from the General Store which you can either drive or walk to. There are sign posts to guide you, you cannot miss it in this tiny town. The people are extremely friendly and helpful.

22nd november 2023 - warneet jetties and warneet precinct plan update.

Since the budget allocation  back in May we have had an opportunity to share our ideas as a group on the proposed design with Better Boating Victoria representatives via online meetings and a site visit that occurred during April.  All went fairly quiet from then on until Mid October when notice of release of the tender documents was published on the Victorian State Government tender site  here https://www.tenders.vic.gov.au/tender/view?id=258331   it was initially posted to provide one months notice of issuance of tender ending mid November but was recently updated to provide notice until 25th March 2024.  We believe this is to provide more time for design refinement and to fit in better with contractors given the impending Christmas period.    Very recently the project was officially published on the Parks Victoria website here .

Once again we thank all parties for the progress to date and especially Jordan Crugnale our local MP who has continued provide her support and be  our first point of contact between the government, Parks Victoria and Better Boating Victoria - as she promised.

23rd May 2023 - Warneet Jetties and Warneet Precinct Plan update

Today  the State Government announced in the May budget allocation $9.5 million funding for the rebuilding of the North and South Jetties as promised.  This is a major milestone for the Save Warneet Jetties campaign.  A snippet of the press realease from Jordna Crugnale's office is below or click here to view the full press release .

warneet motor yacht club

We would like to thank Jordan Crugnale for her help and support with the Save Warneet Jetties campaign.  We also thank Better Boating Victoria and Parks Victoria for including us in the design process of the jetties and for taking on board the feedback we have provided over the past few months.  Our focus now turns to the next milestone which is the commencement of the build of each of the jetties.

19th April 2023 - Warneet Jetties and Warneet Precinct Plan update

In November 2022 a pledge was made by Jacinta Allen and Jordan Crugnale on behalf of the subsequently elected State Labor Government of Victoria to provide $9.5 million to rebuild the North and South Jetties in Warneet.  The aim was to incorporate the building of the jetties with the proposed ramp and boat launching facilities upgrade in the Warneet Precinct Plan developed by Better Boating Victoria (BBV).  The funds to rebuild the jetty will be considered in the May 2023 budget allocation.  So what is the progress to date?

We have not yet reached the May budget allocation date.  Our local MP Jordan Crugnale has kept us up to date with progress on this and we are advised that all is in order at this stage for the funding to be provided as promised.  All relevant Ministers are on board and we know of no issues that could prevent the funds being made available.

BBV have been pushing forward with boat ramp and car park designs and due diligence as a part of the precinct plan.  They have included due diligence and design work for the North and South jetties as a part of that work.  BBV have recently updated, involved and invited feedback from the local and wider community via the various associated groups and clubs to inform the final designs with a view to getting the best outcome for all within the time and budgetary constraints.

Broadly speaking we know at this stage that the South Jetty will be of concrete construction, it will be 3.6m wide extending out to the Warneet channel and will be capable of vehicular access.  The jetty will be Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant. The plan includes  a floating pontoon at the end of the jetty for mooring vessels.

The North Jetty will be of timber construction and will be virtually a replica of the existing jetty except that it will be 3m wide and it will extend out further towards the channel.

The existing boat ramp is to be extended by approximately 25m and the car park will be extended and upgraded with a combination of tarmac and permeable surfaces with due consideration to storm water drainage and the natural aesthetics of the area.

Other elements are being progressed .

We understand that once the jetty designs have been finalised by BBV, Parks Victoria will then get involved with the tendering process and planning and other permissions required prior to construction.

We do not have firm timescales at this stage but we understand that the intention is still to move forward as quickly as possible after budget allocation.  BBV is progressing the approvals for the "non jetty" elements of the precinct plan, particularly the pontoon extension as a priority.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Jordan Crugnale MP, Katherine Grech and her team at Better Boating Victoria and Parks Victoria once again for their hard work on this project to date.  It gives us comfort and a degree of optimism that, with their continued support, the jetties will soon be open to the public again.

9th November 2022 - Save Warneet Jetties Official response to Labor Better Boating Fund announcement

Save Warneet Jetties - Media Release

Response to Labor announcement to provide $9.5 million to rebuild South and North Warneet jetties

Save Warneet Jetties* welcomed the announcement by Jacinta Allan and Jordan Crugnale on Saturday 5th of November that the Victorian Labor Party would provide $9.5 million to finance the rebuilding of the North and South Warneet Jetties if re-elected in this upcoming November election..

In particular we would like to emphasise the following:

1. We thank Jordan and greatly appreciate all the work she has done on this especially for hearing our concerns for over 2 years and making the effort to understand the issue from her constituents' perspective.

2. We also thank Jacinta and Jordan for taking the time on Saturday to come to Warneet and deliver the news in person and to be receptive to the feedback from the various groups affected by the jetty closure.  (See the announcement and feedback here https://www.savewarneetjetties.com/latest-updates )

3. We note that there is a desire to get this project completed as soon as possible.  Work will commence immediately to finalise and disseminate tender documents if Labor win the election on the 26th November.  An allocation will be made in the May 2023 budget of $9.5 million to finance the works with a view to completing the project as soon as possible.  We appreciate that even with the very best intent of all involved it could be years before the North and South Jetties are re-built but look forward to receiving more specifics on timescales when that information becomes available.

4. We are relieved that Jordan and Jacinta have recognised risk of personal injury and safety issues whilst the South Jetty, in particular, is closed and we thank them for agreeing to take this matter back for discussion with the relevant authorities with a view to finding an interim solution to provide access to land at all states of tides as soon as possible.

5. We understand that, although the official Labor media press release does not include Warneet amongst the list of projects that are a part of its "Better Boating Fund infrastructure upgrade", the media release is currently being updated to reflect this very recent announcement.

6. Better Boating Victoria (BBV) have informed us that the Warneet Precinct Plan is currently in the "engineers design drawing phase" which is due to be completed by the end of this year.  We are informed by Jordan Crugnale MP that the figure of $9.5 million has been provided by BBV and presume therefore that the design drawing phase is sufficiently advanced to inform an approximate budget for the project.  At this stage we have nothing to this effect from BBV or Parks Victoria and have no confirmation of what the precinct plan will actually include.

In conclusion, we are delighted to be a step closer to having the jetties open again, but a lot needs to happen between now and then, not least of which is a Labor victory in the upcoming election.

5th November 2022 - Labor pledge to rebuild both Jetties

Members of all three yacht clubs and residents of Warneet  gathered by the South Jetty today for a meeting with Jacinta Allan, Deputy Premier and  Jordan Crugnale, Labor MP for Bass.  The announcement was that, if re-elected in the upcoming state election, Labour would allocate $9.5 million in the May 2023 budget to finance the rebuild of both North and South Jetties. The designes have been part of the overall Warneet Boating Precinct Plan  developed by lead agency BBV with Parks Victoria.  The announcement was welcomed by all and is a very positive step towards a long term solution for the jetty closures in Warneet.

When asked about timescales Jacinta Allan stated that they were wanting to get the project underway  immediately .   If re-elected, the funds would be released in the first budget being May 2023 however work to finalise the designs to construction stage and getting the tender documents finalised and tender process underway would begin straight away.

Attendees expressed the thanks and appreciation for the commitment made by the Labor Government  but re-emphasised their concerns regarding safety for all with both jetties being closed in the interim period between now and completion of the precinct plan which could be some years.  Jacinta and Jordan said they would take this up seperately with Parks Victoria.

Members of the Warneet Foreshore Committee, Warneet Motor Yacht Club and Warneet North Boat Club outlined a suggestion for an interim solution and expressed their desire to work pro actively with Parks Victoria and Better Boating Victoria to develop an interim solution that would dovetail with the building of the new jetties if the precinct plan project receives go ahead approval.

Watch the video below for the full announcement. (16mins)

28th October 2022 - FOI requests accepted by Parks Victoria

We are very pleased to advise that Parks Victoria have accepted our request under the Freedom of Information Act to provide information regarding the following:

“1. Engineers reports prepared within the last 2 years [25 September 2020 – 25 September 2022] relating the structural  conditions of the North and South jetties at Warneet, including draft reports that have been finalised by the engineers but not released .

2. Construction plans relating to the construction of the south jetty during the period 1993/1995

3. Documents that set out the current powers, duties and responsibilities of the Regional Director, Southern and Maritime”.

We have asked for this information with a view to getting an understanding of exactly what is wrong with the South Jetty and to assess the possibility of repairing the jetty as a short term/interim solution whilst the Precinct Plan and/or other long term solution is being worked on.  This is important because the safety of the public is at risk whilst there is no access to land at all states of tide from a platform properly aligned with the tidal flow which the  South Jetty provided.  We have also requested documents on the North Jetty for similar reasons in the event the precinct plan is many years away.

We thank Parks Victoria in advance for sharing this information which we hope will answer questions and dispel some of the concerns of the local community and help reassure all key stakeholders that we are on the best and fastest possible route to a satisfactory solution for all.

We are expecting to receive the documents by the 22nd November 2022.

2 8 th October 2022 - Save Warneet Jetties in the Press again

The issue of closure of the Warneet Jetties hits the press again with an article in StarNews which outlines the concerns expressed by Alex Stroud, Commodore of the Warneet Motor Yacht Club on behalf of the local community and comments on the matter from  local MP Jordan Crugnale, Liberal Candidate for Bass Aaron Brown and Independent candidate for Bass Jeni Jobe.  See the full article here.

8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In

Yacht Clubs and Marinas

FoodfindsAsia.com | 8 Yacht Clubs and Marinas in the Philippines to Moor Your Boat In | Filipinos’ history as a maritime people date back to prehistoric times. In fact, the Philippines’ basic sociopolitical unit today, the barangay, traces its etymological origins to the balangay , the ancient outrigger boats that were used by precolonial Filipino communities to explore and conquer islands this side of the Pacific. As a people belonging to a seafaring culture, it’s no wonder that modern Filipinos are taking a retrospective look at their glorious past as Austronesian mariners and are developing a renewed love for the ocean and marinas as present-day yachtsmen.

Today, Philippine marinas look to accommodate more and more yachts and other pleasure watercrafts as the years go by. In 2017, an ASEAN Briefing op-ed piece named the Philippines as a country with high potential in yacht industry growth. The natural beauty of the Philippine islands and its fantastic bays, combined with a growing interest in leisurely sea travel, can explain the spike in yachting activities throughout the country.

Are you part of the demographic that’s become enamored of the yachting lifestyle? Do you want to know where in the country you can berth your watercraft? Leading sailboat and motorboat authority Europa Yachts is happy to enter the conversation, and recommends the following locations for discovering the Philippines through yachting. Here is a short list of clubs and marinas in the country, organized by island region.

Manila Yacht Club and Marina, Manila, Metro Manila

Established in 1927, the Manila Yacht Club and Marina is one of the oldest yacht clubs in all of Asia, and is nestled in the scenic Manila Bay. It is also near other well-known landmarks in the city, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the headquarters of the Philippine Navy, and the US Embassy. Facilities in the marina include a launching ramp and a fueling center, and the club itself is host to a restaurant and gorgeous function rooms. The Manila Yacht Club only welcomes visitors who arrive by boat, and it charges an initial security deposit of USD 750 upon arrival. Club membership is mandatory for medium and long-term mooring of boats.

Subic Bay Yacht Club, Zambales

The Subic Bay Yacht Club, which was founded in 1998, upholds itself as the country’s premier yacht club. It operates in the deepest bay in the country, and can host vessels well beyond 50 meters in length. Already benefitting from the innate beauty of the Zambales mountains surrounding it, the club hosts a number of other attractions, including its luxury accommodations, swimming pools, and its own movie theater, bowling alley, and nightclub. Those who venture outside of the club’s premises can also shop for well-priced imported goods at the Subic Freeport Zone, engage in water sports , or sign up for diving excursions.

Punta Fuego Yacht Club, Batangas

Peaceful Punta Fuego is a mecca for those who love the sport of sailing. As per its official website, the Punta Fuego Yacht Club aims to serve “a dynamic and vibrant community of boat enthusiasts and yacht owners.” This it does by playing host to a diverse population of watercrafts, from large catamarans and mono-hull yachts to small boats. Non-members of the club may use the berths for up to 3 weeks, and can refuel at the marina’s fueling station. The yacht club offers other amenities such as locker rooms, shower rooms, Internet facilities, a chart room, and a restaurant called Barracuda Bar, which serves delicious fares. Outside of the yachting crowd, Punta Fuego Yacht Club also caters to those wishing to celebrate weddings, conferences, and corporate events in their opulent quarters.

Puerto Galera Yacht Club, Oriental Mindoro

Further south, yachtsmen may moor at the Puerto Galera Yacht Club in Oriental Mindoro, an island location that’s home to tourist attractions like the Sabang Wreck dive site, lively beachfront resorts, and the Malasimbo Music Festival. Puerto Galera Yacht Club has been in operation for almost thirty years and lends services such as refueling provisions and yacht repairs from its marina. Boat owners also enjoy optimal convenience if mooring here, as they can also shop for spare parts in the nearby Batangas port.

Busuanga Yacht Club, Puerta del Sol Bay Marina, Palawan

Beautiful Palawan is a bucket-list destination for many, especially those who dream of cruising its crystalline waters. Accommodating the yachting community in this island province is the Busuanga Yacht Club, which promises secure mooring amidst breathtaking white-sand beaches. Here, each vessel will benefit from a typhoon-safe harbor, easy refueling, and direct access to transportation hubs like the New Busuanga Airport. Adjoining this marina is the Puerta del Sol Bay Resort, which offers luxurious accommodations to visitors. When not atop the deck of a boat, travelers can also explore the lagoons and freshwater lakes of Coron, go shipwreck diving, or relax in the hot springs of Maquinit.

Iloilo Sailing Club, Arevelo, Iloilo City, Iloilo

Iloilo Province is home to some of the country’s most beautiful old-world architecture, a flourishing ecotourism industry, and delectably fresh seafood cuisine. What will round off an unforgettable visit to Iloilo, however, is an excursion to the Iloilo Sailing Club on a leisure watercraft. The club accepts visitors and encourages membership in the case of medium and long-stay mooring. It also hosts a number of amenities and activities, including a dinghy storage, a beach bar and restaurant, and classes for those who want to learn about sailing. In recent months, the Iloilo Sailing Club has also been a convenient meet-up point for big maritime events, such as the Iloilo-Guimaras Paraw Regatta and the Seafarers’ Job Fair.

Cebu Yacht Club, Mactan Island, Cebu

The historic Mactan Island in Cebu was the site of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan’s arrival in the Philippines. Now known as a commercial hub that hosts a prolific furniture and musical instruments industries, Mactan is also the location of the Cebu Yacht Club, an institution that is beloved by the locals. Aside from being an ideal spot to restock on much-needed fuel and supplies, the Cebu Yacht Club is also a trusted club to commission for boat repairs. There’s a good vibe in this club for everybody, as it sports both luxury accommodations and a waterfront strip of restaurants that laid-back diners can frequent. MINDANAO

Holiday Oceanview Marina, Samal Island, Davao del Norte

The Holiday Oceanview Marina is a major attraction of Samal Island in Davao del Norte Province, one that welcomes Filipino and foreign yachtsmen alike to moor within its premises. The space is quite roomy, in fact, with 56 berths that can fit vessels up to 15 meters in length. The club also has a boat ramp that can accommodate boats up to 18 meters in length. The well-guarded and weather-safe marina is a gateway to some of Mindanao’s finest attractions, such as the Pearl Farm, Hagimit Falls, and Giant Clam Sanctuary.

There’s no better way to discover the Philippines from end to end than getting onboard a seaworthy vessel and going on a long cruise, with stops in some of the most beautiful places in the country. Find a safe harbor in any of these major clubs and marinas, and participate in the renaissance of sailing in the Philippines.

Welcome to Midtown Yacht Club

But where are the boats?

Fortunately we aren’t that kind of yacht club.

You won’t find any stuffy dinner jackets or snobby members at this club.

Come by Midtown Yacht Club and enjoy a cold beer and great food cart snacks for a reasonable price.  You’ll find good people and no hassle with a relaxed vibe.  We don’t have a dock to moor your boat, but you won’t need a membership and we aren’t fussy around here.
