The Corinthian Yacht Club has a great location and atmosphere, perfect for private events and receptions.

corinthian yacht club cost

The best view and private club in Tiburon by far. I let my membership lapse during COVID because I temporarily moved out of the area, and now I'm in the process of rejoining. The membership has started getting younger due to an influx of SF residents up north, which will be great for the overall atmosphere! The Membership Committee is very welcoming, which is not the typical experience at a private club of this level. You don't need a boat to join, and there's no need: you will be readily invited on all types of sailing and yachting adventures with other members who do have one. They've done some recent renovations and harbor improvements which really add to the elegance of the historic neoclassical building. It's both nestled in bustling downtown and also serene enough for dolphin watching on quiet afternoons.

Have held two events at the Corinthian. Can't say enough. In each case the Corinthian was a dream venue. The setting can not be topped. The ballroom is beautiful, and the view from the club is breathtaking. The food was excellent. The staff both before the event and during the event itself could not have been more helpful, particularly the club manager John Nicolai ([email protected]). I would highly recommend this venue.

It's a private club but a good one if you have a chance to visit. Good bar and restaurant with awesome outdoor deck with one of the best bay views in Marin. Great club to race at

We rented the Yacht Club to host post wedding bring for 60 out of town guests. We cannot most highly recommend this venue. The staff is extremely helpful and accommodating. The room is large and comfortable with breathtaking views of the bay and San Francisco. It's perfect for any celebration. Thank you to all the staff in making our celebration special

The recent party I gave at the Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon was all that I had hoped and dreamt it could be- a truly memorable evening All my family and friends raved about the evening. Everyone thought the food was excellent - the wonderful hors d'œuvres served during the cocktail hour, the entrees delicious and beautifully plated, and the divine desserts included a crepe station! The service was superb, one friend said "We wanted for nothing"! The super bartender, and servers were friendly and attentive. As a venue the Corinthian cannot be outdone. The magnificent view of San Francisco and the Bay is breathtaking. During the reception guests can mingle in the bar area or outside on the deck and inside on the sunporch. The ballroom is marvelous. It lends itself well to many events - our evening ended with dancing which was greatly enjoyed. We all felt very safe during the present Covid situation at the Corinthian Hats off to the staff for making a great evening for me and my guests. My Manhattan friends called it The Party of The Year! A huge thanks to Zoe, the catering director- a real professional! She ably lead me through all the steps and oversaw the function from the very beginning to the happy end. John the manager, was always there for assistance and the Chef provided outstanding food appreciated by all. The staff made it a magical night. I was thrilled.

I had a surprise birthday party for my wife on Saturday, May 22nd. The people at Corinthian were so helpful in planning the event. Zoe the event manager and John the general manager were great to work with, as planning a party during Covid was a challenge. Zoe in particular was very patient as I sorted through what was feasible given Marin guidelines. The view speaks for itself, but the food was really high quality, especially considering that they were serving a larger group of people. The plated dishes as well as the passed hors d'oeuvres were all delicious. All of the guests commented on how good the food was. The bartenders and servers were really great, both personable and service oriented. I also had several items delivered for the event and everything went off without a hitch. I am so glad I chose CYC for the venue. As I imagined how I wanted the evening to go I don't think it could have been any better.

My husband and I held our wedding reception at the Corinthian Yacht Club on Nov. 1, 2019 and it exceeded our expectations in every way. From its view and atmosphere to its downtown proximity and dining service there is no better venue in Marin County. All of our guests - especially those who were visiting for the first time - were completely blown away by the Corinthian Yacht Club and its stunning sweeping views of the city, Angel Island and the beauty of the San Francisco Bay. Zoe (our special events contact) was superb in every way and we sincerely appreciated her partnership and professionalism. We are also grateful to Mallory Miya Photography for helping us capture our special day, and to The Flaming O's band for helping us dance the night away. Thank you, Zoe & team, for an absolutely perfect evening and memories that will last a lifetime!

On March 16, 1886, 32 gentlemen, mostly members of the San Francisco Yacht Club, disappointed that their racing and cruising interests in the “Mosquito Fleet” were being ignored, met at Arion Hall in San Francisco to discuss forming a new yacht club for small boat sailors (boats not to exceed 45 feet). They had been preceded in 1878 by a number of wealthy yachtsmen who left to found the Pacific Yacht Club (disbanded some 15 years later) following strong disagreement over where to locate SFYC’s new clubhouse (both clubs in fact moved to Sausalito). More than 30 years later (1927) 49 members of SFYC walked out of the annual meeting to form St. Francis Yacht Club. Once again, the dispute was where to locate a new clubhouse. SFYC moved to Belvedere to be near its “offspring,” the Corinthian; the “49ers” moved to San Francisco. Neither the Corinthian Yacht Club of San Francisco nor the San Francisco Yacht Club is actually located in San Francisco. Two weeks following the initial meeting, another was held on April 1, 1886, at Irving Hall in San Francisco, and the Corinthian Yacht Club was permanently organized (although for reasons unknown, it was 10 years before it was officially incorporated on Jan 31, 1896). A constitution was adopted and officers elected. Twenty-five persons signed the roll as charter members and total number of members was to be limited to 40. This restriction was lifted almost immediately. The Initiation Fee was $5 and Annual Dues $10. The constitution prohibited the “sale of liquors, cigars or refreshments,” in accordance with the restrictive covenants affixed to the land lease. Fortunately, the covenants said nothing about the consumption of such items. Wasting no time, the club’s first cruise was organized the following month to Martinez, with the fleet assembling off Tiburon, “where the club proposes to establish an unpretentious clubhouse and anchorage….” (San Francisco Evening News)

FIRST REGATTA JUNE 19, 1886

Three weeks after the first cruise, the first regatta was held, won by  Spray  on corrected time over  Pearl  in a “…stiff breeze and lumpy sea.” The membership now stood at 75.

First Clubhouse

First club dinner 1890, cooks & waiters union 1898, remodel and rebuild.

Conceived and organized by Rosalind Colver, Jytte Birnbaum and Ranee Soleway, with Peggy Blair, the inaugural class graduated 21 students. Women teaching women to sail was a winning formula and 30 years later the program is more popular than ever. Thirty-foot Knarrs, the largest and most competitive one-design fleet on both the bay (44 boats) and in the club (7 boats) were used for instruction the first year – possibly because all the organizers were Knarr owners and sailors.

CYC celebrated by publishing a 100-year history of the club; hosted its first major international regatta (the 18th Knarr International Championship); resurrected the Corinthian Games, an early 1900s tradition, with a picnic at Paradise Park; and held a Centennial Ball with music by the 6th Army military band.

Members approved taking a loan of $500,000 (increased to $800,000) to pay for a building program that included major repairs to the club’s underpinnings, footings and foundations; refurbishing the Sun Porch, dining room and entrance lobby; rebuilding and relocating the main bathrooms – including moving the women’s restroom from what is now the manager’s office; and remodeling staff offices and the library. It was funded by selling 10-year notes to members. The offering was oversubscribed.

The approaching expiration of the tidelands lease to the Corinthian Yacht Harbor Company in 2000, plus delayed harbor maintenance, and a major storm in 1995 that breached the breakwater, served to bring both CYC and the Harbor Company to an agreement for an early surrender of the lease. CYC members approved borrowing $1.65 million to construct a new harbor breakwater and related improvements. This was subsequently increased to $1.925 million as the program was expanded. The loan was serviced solely out of harbor revenues. The new harbor was completed and dedicated in July 1999.

When you walk in the door there is always a friendly face to meet you, whether it is our great staff or a fellow member.

The Club offers junior sailing and social activities programs during the summer months, as well as a junior room for our younger sailors. On any summer weekday you can come to the club and see any number of junior sailors on the water, learning to sail and becoming confident in their own abilities. Junior sail boats including Optis, Sunfish, Lasers, and 420s. The junior room gives the younger sailors a place to call their own at the Club and allows them to have their own social activities. During the summer months we have social activities planned weekly for the junior program. Some younger members “live” at the Club during the summer months, showing up in the morning to sail, eating lunch at our snack bar, and then sailing again in the afternoon. It is a fun place to be.

For adults there is a great mix of sailing and social activities, with something for everyone. The Club offers anything from themed parties to bridge luncheons, adult sailing classes to offshore racing events. The Club calendar is always full during the summer. At the peak, the Club is open 5 days a week, with shorter weekly hours in the off season. Anytime from February to December you will find the Club is open at some time during the week. The food and drink never disappoints. Come in, relax, have some laughs, and enjoy the company of others. CYCCM members and staff will become your second family.

The adult sailing season goes from May until November, in a mix of boats including J-24’s, PHRF boats, Flying Scots, Lasers and Sunfish. Sailors race 4 days a week during the summer months, tapering off to the last sailing events of the season, the Oyster Roast regatta in October and Thanksgiving sail in November. If you have never sailed but would like to learn, CYCCM offers complimentary sailing lessons to its members once a week during the summer months. If sailing isn’t for you but you like being on the water, you are always welcome to join us in the harbor or offshore on the Club powerboats to run the races.

Pilot wiley post, with a sixth-grade education, discovered the jet stream and developed the pressure suit.

corinthian yacht club cost

Wiley Post was born in November of 1898 near Grand Saline, Texas, to cotton farmers.  As a young boy, his family moved to a farm in Garvin County, Oklahoma.  He did not make it past the sixth grade in school.

Post decided he wanted to be a pilot when he saw an airplane in flight in 1913 at the Lawton County Fair.  He registered at the Sweeney Automobile and Aviation School in Kansas City.  After flight school, he returned home and went to work for a construction company.

During World War I, Post became a pilot in the United States Army Air Service, a forerunner of the United States Army Air Corps and the United States Air Force.  Post was learning radio technology, but the war ended before he could complete military training.  He went to work in the Oklahoma oilfields, where in 1926 an accident in the fields caused him to lose his left eye.   He was arrested in 1921 for stealing a car and was sentenced to 10 years at the Oklahoma State Reformatory but was released after one year.

At age 26 he joined a flying circus, Burrell Tibbs and His Texas Topnotch Fliers, and became popular at barnstorming.  Post used the settlement money from the oil-field accident to buy his first airplane.  When Post was asked to fly famous humorist and author Will Rogers to a rodeo, it began a lifelong friendship between the two.

Post was hired by Oklahoma oilmen Powell Briscoe and F.C. Hall in 1930 as a private pilot.  Hall had purchased a single-engine Lockheed Vega, a prevalent aircraft of the 1930s, and named the plane the Winnie Mae after his daughter.  After winning the National Air Race Derby flying from Los Angeles to Chicago, Post painted “Los Angeles to Chicago 9 hours,  8 minutes and 2 seconds August 27, 1930” on the body of his plane.  Second place winner, Adam Charles Williams, finished at 9 hours, 9 minutes, and 4 seconds.  The plane was popular among aviators and was the same model that Amelia Earhart flew .

On June 23, 1931, Post and Harold Gatty, his navigator, took off in   the Winnie Mae from Roosevelt Field on Long Island for a trip around the world.  They landed at Harbour Grace, Flintshire, Hanover, Berlin, Moscow, Novosibirsk, and Nome, Alaska, where a brief stopover was necessary to have the propeller repaired.  The next stops were Fairbanks, Edmonton, and Cleveland before returning to Roosevelt Field.  After traveling 15,474 miles, they arrived back on July 1st, with a record time of 8 days, 15 hours, and 51 minutes.  They visited the White House for lunch on July 6th, rode in a New York City parade on the 7th, and were honored at a dinner given by the Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce of America.

Hall sold the  Winnie Mae to Post, who, along with Gatty, published Around the World in Eight Days– a nod to Jules Verne’s Around the World in Eighty Days .  The book was a story of their journey, with an introduction by Will Rogers.  After the celebrations were over, Post wanted to open his own flight school, but because he had only a 6th-grade education, he was unable to borrow enough money.  Unfazed, Post decided this time he would make a solo flight around the world and break his previous speed record.  Post updated his aircraft with the autopilot mechanism required for a solo flight and a newly perfected radio direction finder.

In 1933, he took off from Floyd Bennett Field.  He stopped in Berlin for repairs to his autopilot, with another stop at Königsberg for replacement maps.  The autopilot was still not functioning properly, causing him to stop first in Moscow and then Novosibirsk, then Irkutsk where it was finally repaired.  He made stops in Rukhlovo, Khabarovsk, and in Flat to replace his propeller.  Then it was on to Fairbanks, Alaska, and Edmonton, Canada, and then finally a landing at Floyd Bennett Field.  He had broken his own record, accomplishing the trip in 7 days, 18 hours, 49 minutes.  The trip was a media sensation, and over 50,000 people were at the airport on July 1st to welcome him home.

Wiley Post in his third pressure suit

A year later Post entered into a financial agreement with the Phillips Petroleum Company.  Post wanted to fly at higher altitudes, but most airplanes at that time could not be pressurized.  Without pressurization, the air is too thin and the temperature is too low.  He worked with Russell S. Colley of the B.F. Goodrich Company to produce the world’s first pressure suit.  It took three tries to perfect the suit before they were finally successful.

Wiley Post with Harold Gatty in Germany, 1931 Photo Credit

The suit had three layers consisting of heavy long underwear, a black rubber internal air pressure bladder, and an outer layer of double ply rubberized parachute material glued to a jointed frame that gave the wearer the ability to operate the controls and enter and exit the airplane. The frame also had rubber boots, pigskin gloves, and a bell-shaped diver’s helmet.  The aluminum helmet’s round faceplate stayed sealed at the height of 17,000 feet and included earphones and a throat microphone.  In the test flight on September 5, 1934, Post reached an altitude of 50,000 feet, enabling him to discover the jet stream.

The next year, Post was looking for a mail-and-passenger air route from the western coast of the United States to Russia.  He put together an aircraft with parts salvaged from two different planes–the wings from a Lockheed Explorer and the body from a Lockheed Orion.  The Explorer wings were six feet longer than the original, which helped extend the aircraft’s range, and the lack of retractable landing gear allowed for floats for water landings.  Lockheed rejected the modifications, saying the two models were not compatible, and combining them was possibly dangerous.  So Post made the changes himself.

During the time the airplane was being refitted, Will Rogers frequently visited the airport in Burbank, California.  One day Rogers asked Post to fly him to Alaska to find new material to write in his columns.  When the floats didn’t arrive in time for takeoff, Post used a set made for a larger airplane, adding weight to the already-heavy nose of the aircraft.  A test flight was completed in July, and Post and Rogers left the Seattle area in August, making a few stops in Alaska.  Rogers typed while Post flew the plane.

On August 15th they departed Fairbanks, Alaska in bad weather, heading for Point Barrow.  Just a few miles from Point Barrow they got lost and set down in a lagoon area to get their bearings.  The engine failed at low altitude during takeoff, and because of the heavy nose, the aircraft dove into the lagoon.  As the right wing was cut off, the plane landed upside down in the shallow water; both Rogers and Post were killed on impact. Post was 36.
