History of St. Lucia

St. Lucia was first inhabited by the Caribs, an indigenous  tribal people who controlled much of the Caribbean islands. However,  French and English settlers arrived in the 1660s, and fought over  ownership of the land for several decades. France and England fought  over most of the Caribbean until the Treaty of Paris. St. Lucia switched  rulers over fourteen times before 1814, and is sometimes called the  "Helen of the West Indies" after the famous Helen of Troy. While Britain  gained final control of St. Lucia, the French were the ones to name it.  Saint Lucia was chosen to honor Saint Lucy of Syracuse, and is the only  country in the world to be named after a woman.

The island was solely British territory until the late 1950s, when it  became a part of the Federation of the West Indies. This Federation  allowed European countries to maintain control of their territories, yet  gave some freedom over internal affairs to the states. However, St.  Lucia fought for sovereignty and in 1979 received it. Saint Lucia is now  an independent state, and a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.  Though it gained independence from the European countries, St. Lucia  still carries much of the history and culture from its ancestors. Geography and Wildlife

St. Lucia was not always a luscious rainforest island with  wildlife and beautiful seascapes. St. Lucia is significantly more rugged  than most of the islands, with its highest peak, Mount Gimie, reaching  over 950 metres (3,120 feet) above sea level. Culture and Local Attractions

St. Lucia is a wonderful melting pot of African, East Indian,  French, and English culture. Because of its long-lasting British rule,  the official language of St. Lucia is English. However, most of the  population also speak a Saint Lucian-specific French Creole, known  locally as Patois, or"Patwa." Much of the music and literature from St.  Lucia natives is written in the Antillean Creole language. Do You Need A Licence To Charter A Catamaran In St Lucia?

If you are on a captained or crewed catamaran charter you do not need a license to sail on the Caribbean Sea - you can just turn up at the marina and go.

You do need a license if you are on a bareboat catamaran charter and in some countries a Day Captain or ICC may not be enough for boats over 45 feet in length, you will need to check with the charter agent but here are some examples of typical sailing qualifications that will allow you to charter in most countries:

**International Certificate of Competence:** This is issued on request by your European sailing authority and you should automatically qualify with certain national sailing qualifications.

**RYA Qualifications:** If you have the following qualifications you will typically be able to take a bareboat charter out of Rhodes (but it is worth checking as per above), these include Day Captain (sail or motor endorsement), Coastal Captainor Yachtmaster.

**American** **Sailing** **Association (ASA):** The ASA 104 Bareboat certificate is commonly accepted but also check as per above

**US** **Sailing**: The International Proficiency Certificate is widely accepted and The Bareboat Cruising Certificate is also accepted in many cases.

Best Time to Book Your St Lucia Catamaran Yacht Charter

Unlike Europe, the sailing season in the Caribbean runs from November to May - perfect for a dose of winter sun. The NE Trades are settled and you will encounter weather between 25-35 degrees C.

Within this period, March and April after the winter northerlies have passed are cooler yet the sailing is just as fun as the rest of the year. St Lucia is after all a tropical country!

For those who want to try something a little outside their comfort zone, August and September are said to be the very best sailing months of all.

There's a problem with this - many yacht charter fleets will not be in the area thanks to hurricane season that runs between July and October. If booked and a hurricane is on its way your vacation will be canceled. There is no minimising the danger of being in the region in a hurricane - there is no high ground and with the general trend for ever fiercer storms, it is not an experience to even risk being around for.

The Climate

**North East Trade Winds**: Similar to those of the Canary Islands these are regular and can get up to F6 at times, but steady and predictable.

May to November is hurricane season, and while the sailing can be fun it can be dangerous. With climate change as it is, hurricanes have increased in ferocity and frequency, and it really isn't worth the risk.

Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool in the evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. If you choose to have a skipper on board your catamaran you won't require licences.

We had a group of 9 celebrating my wife’s 40th birthday. After researching many boat charters we decided to use Israel King, and we are very glad we did. The communication with the staff was quick and efficient. They were very happy to customize the itinerary to meet our needs. We booked a full day with multiple stops. Jerome and his mate, Chris, picked us up a dock close to our villa in Marigot Bay. They were ready with plenty of complimentary cold beer, water, sodas and fresh rum punch. Both gentlemen were very attentive, friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Chris was always prepared with a cold drink whenever mine ran out. We stopped at the mud baths and waterfalls, and Chris escorted our group on that portion of the excursion. They had a van waiting for us and Chris made sure we sailed smoothly through the entire experience. He safeguarded our valuables and took tons of pictures for us. We made another stop for lunch at the beach of our choice and also made 2 other stops for some excellent snorkeling. We never felt rushed, and everyone had a great time. We enjoyed our experience so much we tried to book them for another day. Unfortunately, they were unavailable. One note: it is extremely tedious to travel by car on St Lucia. You can get around much easier by boat. These folks will work with you on any kind of excursion you might need, whether it’s a full charter or just a “taxi” ride to a beach. I would highly recommend them!

Jerome and Chris gave us the best day, despite the rainy conditions on the second half of our day. We got to see all the sights of St Lucia, with a wonderful lunch on Sugar Beach. They were informative, fun and great guys to spend the day with. Would definitely recommend them. The boat was in fantastic condition and very comfortable.
