Italian Businessman's $24 Million Superyacht with a Pool Goes Up in Flames Weeks After Delivery

All seven crew members and nine passengers were able to safely evacuate after the fire broke out

Superyacht Aria SF went up in flames off the coast of Formentera, a small island in Spain, according to multiple reports.

Just weeks after being delivered late last month to Paolo Scudieri, an Italian businessman and car industry leader, the $24 million vessel caught on fire Thursday, The Guardian reported, citing search and rescue agency Salvamento Marítimo .

Although the massive yacht is thought to be unsalvageable, all seven crew members and nine passengers — none of whom have been identified — were able to safely evacuate and were not harmed, according to The Guardian . The cause of the fire remains unknown.

The search and rescue agency, which shared photos of the fire on social media, said that the yacht will be relocated to Ibiza.

Scudieri is the president of Adler-Hp Pelzer Group , which produces "acoustical and thermal components and systems for the automotive sector." PEOPLE has contacted Scudieri's company for comment.

Additionally, he is a participant in the Ferrari Challenge , a "competition for those who, not satisfied with just driving their Ferraris on the road, feel the urge to compete in top-level sprint races."

Scudieri is believed to have a fortune of around $500 million, according to The Guardian .

The Aria SF , which was set to make its public debut at the upcoming Cannes and Monaco yacht shows later this year, had plenty of luxurious amenities, according to SuperYachtTimes .

In addition to boasting an open-air gym as well as a swimming pool, the Aria SF was designed to accommodate up to 10 guests, the outlet reported. The owner's suite even had its own private lounge with a sofa and a television, with direct access to an outdoor lounge thanks to a private staircase.

A launching ceremony was held back in April, which included an orchestra and multi-colored confetti that resembled the Italian flag when shot out from a cannon, according to The Daily Mail .

"A heartfelt thanks to the owner who actively participated in the construction of this new model, enhancing it with innovation and technology," ISA Yachts, which made the vessel, wrote in a statement at the time.

A $24 million superyacht, recently received by its multimillionaire owner, caught on fire and is not believed to be salvageable.

The 43.7 meter long superyacht belonged to Paolo Scudieri, the chairman of Adler-Hp Pelzer Group, an automotive parts company.

The Aria SF superyacht was anchored on the west coast of Formentera at Cala Saona in the Balearic Sea when it caught on fire, according to Spanish sea safety and rescue agency Salvamento Marítimo. The agency said the superyacht would be towed to Ibiza.

The superyacht had seven crew members and nine passengers onboard, and everyone was able to evacuate with no injuries. So far, its still unknown what caused the fire and where it originated on the superyacht.

The superyacht included five staterooms, including two VIP suites and two twin staterooms, that could hold up to 10 guests. Scudieri's suite , located on the main deck, included a private lounge, skylight, and a terrace. His suite also had an outdoor lounge that he could access with a private staircase.

Scudieri received his superyacht late last month. The Aria SF was set to premiere at the 2022 Cannes and Monaco yacht shows.

New Superyacht Destroyed In Spectacular Blaze Off Formentera

2022 is not a good year to be a superyacht...

A pristine, white 44m superyacht now looks like the burnt bottom of a paella pan. The superyacht caught fire off the coast of Formentera on its first ever season on the Mediterranean. The crew and passengers all escaped unscathed, but the same can’t be said for the yacht.

Aria SF, a spanking new superyacht which was only delivered in July 2022, has been destroyed by fire while sailing off the coast of Formentera (a beautiful island just over 20km south of Ibiza). The yacht is 44m long. According to the area’s Maritime Rescue service, the 7 crew members and 9 passengers are all safe, having been rescued by the Maritime Rescue team.

The Maritime Rescue service also announced, some seven hours ago (as of the time of writing) that the fire had been almost completely extinguished. Diariodeibiza.es reports that the smoke could be seen from as far away as Ibiza. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

According to El Pais the call for help went out at about 5pm, and it was then that the Maritime Rescue service sent out the Salvamar Acrux and the Guaramar Concepcion Arenal, which went to exacuate passengers and crew from the striken vessell and to put out the flames. Once the fire is out, El Pais reports, the Guardamar Concepcion Arenal will tow what’s left of the burnt superyacht to Ibiza.

According to The Superyacht Times , the yacht had a swimming pool, several lounges, five bedrooms and a gym. Aria SF also, Boat International reports, “was the first hull in the ISA GT 45 series and was due to make her world debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September.”

Various superyachts have caught fire this year. The multi-million dollar 27 metre Sanlorenzo SX88, for instance, was destroyed in Valencia in April after an alleged fault occurred with the lithium batteries.

In January, too, a fire at Ferretti Shipyard in Cattolica destroyed what appeared to be the Ferretti Yachts 1000, with as many as five fire brigades being called to the scene.

Earlier this year DMARGE spoke to founder of BLC Yachts,  Candas Balci , who has previously worked as a marina manager and a luxury yacht manager, to ask about superyacht protocols when it comes to fires. Balci told DMARGE that there are long procedures and trainings to avoid fires breaking out on board, “but at the end of the day all yachts are highly flammable.”

He added: “If it is fire you can put out in 3-5 minutes, it is always better to move the boat outside of [the] marina, far from other yachts and people, and continue your fire fighting somewhere safe.”

“Generally, this ends up with the yacht sinking, due to all the water pressured to the yacht to put down the fire. After the yacht is capsized, insurance companies come and check if it will be covered. Generally, they do, and lift out the burnt yacht in some dry dock to investigate the fire.” Candas Balci

“But they have some items on their policies to not pay the coverage, therefore everything on your yacht must be legal, starting from the flag registry, manning on board and crew certificates. Otherwise, there will be hard days for the owner to get his money from insurance.”

The wildfire began at around 11:20 p.m. on Friday and destroyed approximately 1,200 hectares (3,000 acres) of the island’s only pine forest, according to Kikilias. The blaze was eventually extinguished by firefighters on Saturday. “Six airplanes and two teams of firefighters, who had to be absent from dealing with other fires and services, were required to put it out,” the minister explained.

Soaring temperatures in Greece are taking a serious toll on emergency services, with the extreme weather conditions of recent days resulting in multiple fires across the Mediterranean country. Greece’s civil protection service called for extreme vigilance on Friday because the risk of fires was “very high.” Hydra’s mayor Giorgos Koukoudakis has also said that fireworks were prohibited that night due to strong winds.

Persefoni I , which can accommodate up to 10 guests in six staterooms and 11 crew, costs about $320,500 (€299,000) a week to charter in the high season. Media reports have described the passengers aboard the superyacht as Kazakh citizens, while the nationality of the crew members remains unclear. All 13 accused were given 48 hours on Sunday to prepare defense statements, with the prosecutor requesting they reappear in court this week.

A luxury superyacht docked at a marina in the Whitsundays has exploded into a ball of flames, spewing enormous plumes of smoke into the air and blanketing nearby vessels.

Queensland police rescue elderly woman trapped in floodwaters

A luxury superyacht docked in the Whitsundays has been completely destroyed in a massive inferno after a blaze ignited on board the high end vessel.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Service crews were called to Hamilton Island Marina at about 10:45am on Monday to find the luxury boat fully engulfed in flames.

Giant plumes of thick black smoke were seen spewing into the air, blanketing nearby vessels.

It's understood no one was onboard when the fire broke out, however a man in his 40s and a man in his 60s have been assessed for smoke inhalation.

Torquay superyacht fire - this is all that's left after devastating blaze

'It looks like it has been under the water for 500 years, not just a few weeks'

This is all that remains of a multi-million-pound superyacht which was destroyed by fire in Torquay Harbour. Salvage teams have now completed the job of raising the Rendezvous from the sea bed inside the harbour, and the burned-out hulk of the luxury yacht has been craned on to a barge ready to be taken away.

In the picture by Adrian Pearce , the affects of the fierce fire can be seen. Today Torbay Council also confirmed that the salvage operation will not have cost Council Tax payers a penny. Pictures taken today show the twisted and discoloured hull and metal rails of the boat.

One onlooker said: “That’s insane! It looks like it has been under the water for 500 years, not just a few weeks.”

Read more: First pictures of £2m fire-gutted Rendezvous superyacht salvaged from Torquay harbour

The Rendezvous, which was 26 metres long and valued in reports at anything from £2m to £8m, was destroyed in the spectacular fire on May 28. Shortly after taking on a reported nine tonnes of fuel, the Rendezvous caught fire while moored alongside a Torquay Marina pontoon. Eye-witnesses reported hearing gas cylinders exploding as the flames took hold.

Firefighters from all over South Devon were sent to the scene as the flames and smoke billowed into the air. A huge pall of black smoke could be seen across Torbay and local residents were warned to keep their windows and doors closed.

The fierce fire cut through the yacht’s mooring ropes and it drifted across the harbour, still at the heart of a raging inferno. The drifting boat settled against the harbour’s Princess Pier and set some of the pier’s recently-installed wooden decking on fire.

superyacht fire

The pier remains closed to the public while repairs take place. Later in the day, after fire crews had put out the flames, the Rendezvous sank in the harbour.

Environmental engineers were quickly on the scene to put out special inflatable booms to minimise the risk of pollution. The superyacht was built by Plymouth-based Princess Yachts in 2010.

She could accommodate up to eight guests and three crew members, and had a top speed of 30 knots. The cost of the salvage operation is not known, but it will not fall on Torbay Council or the bay’s Council Tax payers.

A spokesman for the council said: “All clean-up, repair and salvage works are covered by insurance and will not impact on council budgets.”

Authorities arrest 13 on private yacht for allegedly sparking devastating forest fire: 'We are outraged'

P eople continue to launch fireworks near highly flammable areas year after year — with disastrous results. And now, one group of firework-happy individuals on a private yacht in Greece are learning their lesson the hard way.

In June, 13 crew and seven passengers on a privately chartered yacht set off unauthorized fireworks from their ship. As far as officials can tell, the pyrotechnics then sparked a major forest fire on the island of Hydra, according to CNN .

"We are outraged," Hydra Mayor George Koukoudakis said on state TV, per CNN. "If it's true, it is something that really saddens me."

The Maritime Executive reported that the fire burned through 3,000 acres of pine forest, requiring six aircraft and two firefighting teams during a time when the teams were already needed elsewhere. Greece had issued an extreme fire risk warning and a burn ban, which the passengers and crew ignored.

After another ship reported seeing the fireworks launch from the yacht, authorities met the passengers and crew at an Athens marina. There, they arrested the 13 crew members; however, all of the passengers quietly returned home the following morning, per the Maritime Executive.

Reckless deployment of fireworks is frustratingly common, even though the fire risk is well-documented. Each year in the U.S., nearly twice as many wildfires are reported on July 4 as on any other day, PBS reports.

Watch now: These high-tech roads wirelessly charge your car as you drive

And fireworks aren't the only threat — wildfires have been sparked by everything from illegal camping fires to gender reveal parties. Worse, these human-created fires burn more than twice as fast as naturally occurring wildfires, according to research by the American Geophysical Union, as reported by Science.org .

Wildfires — and their corresponding intense temperatures, air pollution, and lingering destruction — have also been linked to negative health impacts. These include decreased mental health outcomes, pregnancy complications , higher risks of heart and lung issues, threats to biodiversity , and more.

If the Greek yacht's crewmembers are convicted of arson, the Maritime Executive reports, they "could face serious penalties, including as much as 20 years of prison time." Hopefully their case deters the next group of would-be firestarters, and encourages a pyrotechnic-free vacation instead.

Stonington yacht club fire injures one, threatens Amtrak power lines

Jul. 15—STONINGTON — Fast acting borough firefighters prevented a maintenance shed fire Monday afternoon from damaging overheard power lines that serve not only Eversource customers but the adjacent Amtrak rail line.

About 1:30 p.m., police received calls of fire in a shed at the Wadawanuck Club at 196 Water St.

Stonington Borough Fire Chief Jeff Hoadley said he arrived first and found heavy fire coming from the shed, which is directly under the power lines. Hoadley said he was immediately concerned the fire would damage and take down the overhead wires that carry 13,000 volts of electricity for Eversource and 26,000 volts that serve Amtrak. If the that occurred, service between Boston and New York would be interrupted.

Hoadley said the next firefighter to arrive, volunteer Hunter Wilcox, began protecting the wires by extinguishing the fire below. Hoadley said firefighters were able to get the blaze under control in about 15 minutes after putting 750 gallons of water on the fire. The shed and its contents were destroyed.

A maintenance worker who was in the shed suffered burns and was taken by Mystic River Ambulance to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. The extent of his injuries was not immediately known.

Hoadley said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Also responding to the fire were the Pawcatuck and Wequetequock fire departments, Stonington Ambulance, Stonington police, L+M Hospital paramedics and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. The DEEP responded as the shed is located less than 200 feet from Stonington Harbor.

Editor's note: This story corrects the amount of water used to extinguish the fire.

The company announced it’s building a tool, Media Manager, that will allow creators to better control how their content is being used to train generative AI models — and give them an option to opt out.

The EU just re-elected its president for another five years — here's what that means for tech

The European Union's president, Ursula von der Leyen, was confirmed in the role for another five years Thursday after parliamentarians voted overwhelmingly to re-elect her. The scale of her support (401 votes for versus 284 against with 15 abstentions) -- a far firmer endorsement than last time around -- may say more about lawmakers' concerns over rising geopolitical uncertainties, with war still raging in Ukraine and the U.S. headed for an election in November that could return Donald Trump to the White House by 2025, than reflecting ardent passion for her leadership. Von der Leyen has already pressed ahead with major reforms in digital policy.

Without this company’s technology, future fusion power plants might never light up

Proponents of nuclear fusion have long promised to create nearly limitless power here on earth by harnessing the same reaction that powers the sun. Today, fusion's biggest hurdle is ensuring that any fusion power plant produces more power than it needs to operate. Many fusion reactors are designed to run on a mix of two isotopes of hydrogen, deuterium and tritium.

Democrats Seek Criminal Investigation of Justice Thomas Over Travel and Gifts

The senators said the Supreme Court justice’s failure to disclose lavish gifts and luxury travel showed a “willful pattern of disregard for ethics laws.”

Reporting from Washington

Two top Democratic senators have asked the Justice Department to open a criminal investigation of Justice Clarence Thomas for possible violations of federal ethics and tax laws.

Senators Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Ron Wyden of Oregon sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick B. Garland last week asking that he appoint a special counsel to investigate Justice Thomas’s failure to disclose lavish gifts , luxury travel , a loan for a recreational vehicle and other perks given to him by wealthy friends.

The request further intensified efforts by Senate Democrats to scrutinize Justice Thomas’s conduct at a time when they are trying to force Supreme Court justices to comply with stricter ethics and financial disclosure rules.

“We do not make this request lightly,” the senators wrote in a joint statement. “Supreme Court justices are properly expected to obey laws designed to prevent conflicts of interest and the appearance of impropriety and to comply with the federal tax code.”

“No government official should be above the law,” they added.

Specifically, the senators asked that a special counsel investigate whether Justice Thomas violated federal ethics and tax laws by failing to disclose as income the $267,000 he received in forgiven debt for a luxury R.V.

The senators wrote that Justice Thomas had “repeated opportunities” to explain his failure to disclose the gifts to the Senate Finance Committee, of which Mr. Wyden is the chairman, as well as the Judiciary Committee’s panel on federal courts, which Mr. Whitehouse leads.

They also accused Justice Thomas of showing a “willful pattern of disregard for ethics laws,” behavior that they said surpassed that of other government officials who have been investigated by the Justice Department for “similar violations.”

A spokeswoman for the Supreme Court did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Here’s the latest news and analysis from capitol hill..

Biden’s Age Concerns: President Biden has yet to do what many Democrats on Capitol Hill said he must to show he is up to remaining in the race. But so far, they are doing nothing to nudge him aside .

The Aging Senate: Senators have had plenty of practice watching colleagues hold stubbornly onto their positions of power as they grow old. None wants to lead a public call  for  Biden to withdraw.

Merrick Garland: The House defeated a Republican measure that would have imposed a $10,000-a-day fine on the attorney general  for refusing to turn over audio recordings of President Biden’s interview with a special counsel.

Justices Alito and Thomas: Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York, introduced articles of impeachment  against the two justices , accusing them of improperly failing to disclose gifts from wealthy benefactors and to recuse themselves from certain cases.

McCarthy’s Revenge Tour: Kevin McCarthy, the former House speaker, has spent much of his time, energy and money since leaving Congress trying to defeat the Republicans who cost him his gavel .
