Unlike the charming LEGO Ideas 21313 Ship in a Bottle , the new LEGO Technic 42074 Racing Yacht , despite also being a ship, doesn’t come inside a brick-built bottle. Instead, this bright and vivid ship was designed for high-speed regattas. Even though its playability is rather limited, the set can give a young builder the very basic idea of a modern racing vessel’s mechanisms. The set is just 330-pieces big, but its retail price of £24.99/$39.99/29.99€ can make it a pretty good addition to your collection if you can deal with the model’s flaws…

Instructions

The set comes with two building guides. Because both builds (A-model and B-model) look so much alike, it may take you a moment to notice that these are two different booklets for two different models and not just two parts of the same building guide.

Pieces and stickers

Besides the two building instructions, the box contains 4 unnumbered bags, a sticker sheet and the highlight of the set – a plastic sheet with two vast sails. The set includes a number of panels in dark azure, although any of them can be found either in sets of 2017 or in other Technic sets of the first half of 2018, e.g. in 42077 Rally Car .

The plastic sheet is very flexible, so I wonder if it can be damaged inside the box during transportation. A thin sheet of cardboard or plastic wrapping might be a reasonable safety measure in this case.

The sails are die cut round the edges. My first impression: plastic is very flexible, yet rather firm and looks durable. I believe the only way you can damage the sails severely is simply by cutting them with a pair of scissors.

And, of course, there’s a very modest sticker sheet. The stickers are bright and look very fresh. No doubt, the model will look better with stickers applied rather than not.

Surprisingly, the building of the yacht took a lot less time than I expected; experienced builders will be able to finish the ship in under 30 minutes.

You start building the yacht with its main play mechanisms – one turning the rudder and another one rotating the boom. The build is very simple and every part of both mechanisms is exposed, so don’t expect any exceptionally smart design solutions.

Unlike the yacht’s exposed stern, its nose is a nice-looking combination of panels and beams. Stickers help a lot to smoothen the transition between azure and yellow.

However, I was slightly disappointed with what the top of the mast looks like. An exposed yellow axle looks odd, even though it is clear there is no other way of creating a proper angle. Moreover, the smaller of the sails has only two fixing points. This means that the sail swings loosely each time you tilt the yacht. On the picture above you can see an unsecured side of the sail lying on the photo backdrop.

The finished model

Once finished, the yacht leaves a dual impression. The model’s design deserves a solid “A”, but that can’t be said about its playability. The set has only two basic features, and even these are as limited as possible; get ready to constantly hit your fingers with the boom any time you try to adjust it. And there’s no way you can make the yacht stand upright: it will always heel over. You’d need a proper display stand if you’re planning to exhibit the model on a shelf.

A couple of wheels in the bottom of the yacht are meant to add playability, but in fact they make the whole vessel utterly unstable. I don’t see a problem with the ship gliding on any home surface (either wood, glass, or soft fabric). Removing these wheels might improve the whole play experience significantly.

Even though the overall shape of the yacht and the color solutions are brilliant, the model leave a lot of space for improvements and modifications. For instance, small yellow panels in the centre of the body can be easily replaced with some other types of smaller panels to conceal huge empty spaces between the pieces.

Conclusions & recommendation

If you’re already tired of building cars, trucks and helicopters, an eye-catching 42074 Racing Yacht might be a breath of fresh ocean air for you. The set hasn’t got anything to surprise us with, but still it makes a rather great basic model for almost unlimited improvements. Other then that there is not much the set can be valued for: no new pieces, no new mechanisms, and even the sails are hard to apply in any other non-marine creation.

“The set is available now from the LEGO Shop ($109.99 in the US | $139.99 in Canada | £89.99 in the UK)” I’m pretty sure that this set only costs $39.99 in the US and £24.99 in the UK.

For what it’s worth, a sailboat underway is always heeling. Personally, I think it would look more dynamic as a display if it were tilting a bit.

I’m reasonably confident the point of the wheels is to *make* the boat heel over, for a more realistic position than standing vertical.

Surprised how backhanded this review is, really. Every line seems to be tempered with a criticism. Maybe in person it’s less pleasing than it looks in photographs. I think the mechanism is a little underrated here. It’s simple, sure, but it’s got some pleasing stuff going on and it’s a break from all the cars, trucks, and construction vehicles.

That flappy sail is a big negative though.

INTRODUCTION

So far, we have seen 8 nautical vehicles in Lego Technic. This year, we got two more! First one is 42074 Racing Yacht, and the second one is 42076 Hovercraft . From Wikipedia:

Ok, now, lets quickly cover the main sections of the typical small sailboat.

As we can see, our 42074: Racing Yacht has most of the parts in place. It has Main sail, Headsail or Jib, Mast and Boom, Rudder and even Shrouds printed on a sails. Two things are off: it does not have a keel, and it seems its rudder is above water level. I guess both of these compromises were necessary to achieve better usability of the set, i.e. rolling it on a floor.

THE BOX The box shows our Racing Yacht sailing on the water near a city. It also seems it is ahead of two other smaller boats. The box is taller than wide.The weight of the box is approximately 325 grams.

FRONT SIDE The box states that this model is for the age of 8 till 14. More importantly, the 2-models in-1 logo is clearly visible, which means this set can be used to build two different models. A model is a sailboat, while the B model is a catamaran. We can also see a note stating: "Model does not float. Not for use in water".

BACKSIDE The backside shows the sailboat and alternative model - catamaran, and their functions. More on that later.

One of the sides shows picture of the steering wheel in actual size.

CONTENT OF THE BOX

The box contains:

• 2 Instruction Booklets (A- and B-model)
• 1 Sticker Sheet
• 1 Sail Set (Main Sail and Jib)

INSTRUCTION BOOKLET A-MODEL The instruction booklet for the main model.

INSTRUCTION BOOKLET B-MODEL Noteworthy is the inclusion of an additional booklet for the B-model.

EXAMPLE OF RANDOM INSTRUCTION STEP

STICKER SHEET One look at the sticker sheets and it's obvious these stickers will give the model its final and slick shape.

BAGS Four bags containing all the parts for the model. The only unbagged part in this set is a sail and jib combo.

HIGHLIGHTED PARTS This section describes the new or highlighted parts.

Plastic Sails (sheet of two) with Waves and Technic Gears Pattern. The Sail and Jib combo is exclusive for this set.

Our boat consists of 330 parts. Here's the complete part list.

The build is pretty straightforward, and interesting. From very early on, you will get to install first of the two functions. The picture below shows the model halfway of the build. You can see the steering mechanism and sliding steering wheel. Sliding road wheels are also installed.

Here we can see a sail handling mechanism. Its function is to slide the main boom and main sail to one of the sides. It can be operated from both sides of the boat.

Panels installed, she is almost seaworthy.

The finished model looks quite good. Of course, much of the visual identity comes from the colorful sails, and complimenting stickers.

The rear of the vehicle looks okay too. One can criticize that it looks unfinished. or overexposed. And it does.

Overall shape of the hull is nice, it does resemble a boat hull, with exception from the front part (Bow), which looks a bit off. Of course, achieving such a complex shape using only panels and liftarms is very hard. We can not expect something in a line of big brick-built ship MOCs.

Profile view.

The next picture shows the underside of the boat. As you can see, everything here is centered around road wheels. This set is clearly meant to be pushed on the floor. Also, it can't stand fully upright very easily.

Functions for the B model are the same:

Besides the somewhat unfinished feel of the back section, there are no real downsides to this model. I like the looks and color scheme. It also it contains various unique parts. It even features a interesting sail handling mechanism and working steering wheel to operate the rudder. The set comes with printed instructions for the B-model, so it's basically a real 2-in-1 set.

For around 30 euros you really can't go wrong with this set. Given the price, this also makes for a perfect gift for a boat lover!

First off, thanks for yet another quality, review, I much prefer this type of proper review, although I seem to be in a quickly dwindling minority. They are getting harder to find and I appreciate the time you spent making it. 

A lot of people don't seem to like that rudder above the water line. To me it just represents a portion of the rudder, the rest obviously below the water line same as the keel. Sure they could have including both, probably at the expense of any sort of play feature, making a great display set. 

Personally I like this set and catch myself playing with it every now and then, when I dust my Lego display off. 

It's one of those sets I want to buy a second one for the good parts, although I have no use for the sails.

Fully agree.  I wish they included the keel and rudder part that goes bellow the water line (in a way that we could put it as a option, if and when we want). That way we could have both playability and nice realistically looking/display model, at the expense of few more (larger) parts/panels.

Ilim Group Presents its New KLB Mill to Industry Players

Presentation of the largest kraftliner production site in Russia took place at the 27th International Exhibition of the Packaging Industry RosUpack

The presentation of the Big Ust-Ilimsk Project, involving the construction of Russia’s one-of-a-kind pulp and board (KLB) mill in the Irkutsk Oblast, was one of the key events at RosUpack 2023. When speaking at the plenary session on corrugated board packaging market development, Alexey Chenyaev, Ilim’s Senior Vice President, Sales, Supply Chain Management and Packaging, focused on the advanced manufacturing and environmental solutions implemented at the new KLB Mill and prospects for sales market expansion it will secure.

After KLB Mill ramp-up (600,000 tons of kraftliner per year), the total annual output of Ilim Group will amount to 4.3 million tons. The Company will be one of the world’s largest producers of unbleached packaging materials and will strengthen its leadership in the Chinese market of wood-free corrugated materials with a share of approximately 50 to 60%.

The Big Ust-Ilimsk project was met by exhibitors with great interest. This year the event was attended by more than 740 companies from 19 countries. Ilim’s booth with an area of 140 m2 was one of the largest one at the site and was operated by about 50 experts from Sales and Corrugated Box Business Management Departments. The booth was attended by over 60 key accounts and more than 120 representatives of various companies, including such major ones as Heinz, MARS and KDV-Group.
