Yacht charter seasons explained
If you’ve never chartered a yacht before, deciphering the seasons can be tricky. There are actually two primary types of ‘season’: winter vs summer, and high vs low. Winter/summer seasons each last around six months and refer to both location and time of the year; summer yacht charter season spans from around April/May through October, while the winter season starts in November and runs through April.
The summer/winter seasons are dictated by the weather and water conditions, with areas such as Northern Europe and the Mediterranean most popular during the summer season, while destinations in the Caribbean, Indian Ocean and Florida dominate the winter yacht charter season.

High/low season (also known as peak/off-peak season), on the other hand, refers to the busier and quieter times the yachting calendar, with peaks in both the summer and winter seasons. During the winter, Christmas and New Year are the peak yacht charter periods, with July and August being the busiest in the summer season. During these times yacht availability tends to be more limited and prices are often higher.
Peak vs off-peak yacht charter costs
As with any vacation, booking a yacht charter during peak season will inevitably be more expensive. For example, the ultra-luxe Secret superyacht (who features a swimming pool, separate Jacuzzi, cinema room and fully equipped gym) is available to charter for €840,000 (approximately $990,000) during low season, whereas during both the winter and summer high seasons weekly costs begin at €875,000 ($1.29m).
You’ll also find that local events, such as the Cannes Film Festival and the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show, will impact yacht availability and weekly chartering costs throughout both high and low seasons.

Can you charter a yacht out of season.
Given that different parts of the world have different peak seasons, you’ll find that at pretty much any given time of the year, you will be able to charter a luxury yacht. However, bear in mind that the summer/winter seasons are primarily in place due to weather; while many luxury yachts are impressively durable, with explorer yachts designed to handle all weathers, yachting is generally best enjoyed in warmer climates and calmer seas.

So, while it may be possible to charter a yacht in Northern Europe during winter, you may be disappointed to find significantly higher rainfall and lower temperatures. Equally, while the Caribbean and Florida are both known for enjoying generally good weather all year round, don’t disregard the threat of hurricane season, which tends to be from June to November.
You may also find that your preferred yacht is only available in certain destinations at certain times of the year. For example, leading yacht charter company Burgess only offers the hybrid yacht Home for cruising in the Mediterranean during the summer season and in the Caribbean during winter. Ultimately individual yacht availability is dictated by her owner; if they want to enjoy their vessel for themselves during certain months of the year, she won’t be available to charter.
The best way to secure both your desired vessel and ensure a smooth, comfortable cruising experience is to enlist the help of a yacht broker, who will be able to advise you on the best time of year to visit certain destinations as well as use their industry connections to find the best yacht for your needs.

Shoulder seasons
When looking into chartering a yacht you will also hear of shoulder seasons, which refer to the periods that sit either side of the peak seasons, running from April – May, and September – October. For many, the shoulder seasons are the most preferable time to book a yacht charter: demand for boats, berths and anchorages tends to be far lower and crowds onshore will be smaller. For many, the weather is also more agreeable during shoulder seasons with a light breeze cutting through the heat of the sun.

How long is an individual charter?
In addition to understanding the length and meaning of different yacht charter seasons, you should also consider how long you want to be on board. Most charter companies tend to operate in week-long blocks, but the average is about ten days – again, a yacht broker will be able to negotiate your desired charter length.

However, while most people tend to charter for one or two weeks, those with time on their hands sometimes opt to charter for extended periods, with some even staying on board for an entire season. On larger vessels, onboard amenities will typically include office spaces (if not full conference rooms) and WiFi connections allowing for business to continue as usual during long-term yacht charters.
When to book a yacht charter
According to yacht charter company Northrop & Johnson , if you want to vacation during the peak seasons you should reach out to a broker no later than ten months in advance to ensure your first choice of boat and berths, with many yachts booked up a year in advance. However, three to six months ahead of time will usually be suitable for off-season yacht charters.

Chartering a yacht is probably one of the ultimate choices in dream vacations for many.
Engaging in the beauty of the open sea in a luxurious setting and a great service is surely a thrilling and unforgettable experience.
The demand for yacht chartering has been on the rise over recent years, and yacht charter seasons are understandably busy periods.
Every charter destination will have its yacht charter season.
This refers to the months during which the cruising conditions are the most suitable, and hence, during such a time the charters will be more popular.
The charter season refers to the time of year when it’s best to rent a yacht for a vacation.
It’s also the time when most charter companies will be operating.
The two yacht charter seasons are the winter and the summer season.
These are dictated by the weather and the water conditions of the particular locations.
For instance, in the case of the Mediterranean the summer season is most popular, whereas in the case of the Caribbean the winter charter season is more in demand.
Both seasons will last around six months.
Here is a more detailed explanation of the yacht charter seasons, and related aspects.
Summer Charter Season
The Summer Season is a time for sunny weather and warm temperatures.
Several cultural affairs occur during this season too.
The Summer charter season starts off in late April, and runs through until mid-September.
The peak charter season in the Mediterranean is from July til August.
Another relatively popular summer destination is New England in the US.
Here however the summer season is considerably shorter as it runs from mid-June through August.
The high season runs between mid-July to mid-August.
The Mediterranean is definitely the world’s most popular yacht charter destination for the summer season.
Due to the temperate climate during such months, it’s an ideal time of year for the perfect vacation at sea.
The Italian Riviera and Sicily, and the Amalfi Coast are popular charter regions.
Then there’s Cannes and the French Riviera which are also very popular summer charter locations.
Other locations that are also sought after include Croatia, Greece, Monaco, Corsica, and as mentioned earlier, New England.
Famous events such as the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix coincide with this season.
Winter Charter Season
The Winter Season is the ideal time for chartering a yacht if you are considering the Caribbean.
During this time of year, many get away from the cold weather to indulge in the sun of these popular locations.
The Winter charter season is also about six months long.
It kicks off in late October and runs through March.
The peak charter season in the Caribbean is from late December, during the Christmas period, and all through the month of March.
The Caribbean is considered to be the mecca for winter charters.
The Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Turks & Caicos are popular locations where there are hundreds of beaches one can enjoy, and many beautiful locations to explore and indulge in.
The weather during this time in these locations is warm, making it ideal for yachting.
Thailand, the Seychelles, Tahiti and the South Pacific also make for very popular winter charter destinations.
Thailand, for instance, is ideal for those who like snorkeling, or if you plan to engage in island hopping.
Tahiti is also a great location for snorkeling, as well as diving and hiking as it is renowned for its natural beauty, and its intriguing black sand beaches.
It’s also worth noting that some destinations offer chartering all year round.
Florida, for instance, is a very popular destination regardless of the time of year.
The Bahamas offer hundreds of islands for exploration and adventuring.
Nassau is renowned for its numerous beaches and great golf courses, while The Exumas is popular for cliff diving and snorkelling.
Miami and the Florida Keys are popular cruising locations all year round too.
As a general rule of thumb, charters during high season can cost around 30% more than low season.
Therefore, the best time for signing up for a yacht charter is during the pre-season.
One should avoid waiting more than two weeks before the scheduled start date.
It is possible to charter off season.
However, this will mean that there’s bound to be fewer options than what you’d be able to find during the high or peak season.
During off season you might also encounter certain problems, such as managing to get crew members.
This is even more problematic if you plan to make a longer sea trip.
Moreover, the general weather conditions will not be as favourable as they are during the peak season.
The shoulder season is the term used to describe the middle point between seasons.
This means that it’s the time between the high and the low season, and between the low and high season.
The majority of yachts tend to be booked by this time.
However, it’s also a time when companies will be trying to clear out what’s left, in order to make room for new inventory for the upcoming season.
As a result, the shoulder season might be a good time to book.
Having said that, it’s important to be aware that the shoulder season does not last long, so it’s best to plan to book the ideal yacht for your preferences.
An individual charter generally lasts a week or ten days.
However, there are also those who charter for several weeks, or for a month.
The minimum days for a yacht charter are often two, three or four, depending on the company.
During yachting season, there’s ample opportunity to work aboard a yacht to potentially earn a very lucrative income.

The weather is the most obvious factor in determining the best sailing or boating seasons, but low and high seasons within those periods play an important role too.
High and low seasons – also referred to as peak or off-peak seasons – focus on busier and quieter times in the yachting calendar. For example, Christmas and New Year mark high season points during winter, when demand is high, availability limited and prices sometimes higher. Likewise, the hurricane season of the Caribbean is an example of low season, when boats hunker down for a few weeks and allow the storms to pass over. In the Mediterranean, July and August are bursting at the seams, and mark the high point of the summer season.
While smaller charter boats will usually be located in one place, and you can therefore charter them out of season if you choose, you can expect larger charter yachts such as superyachts to move from one region of the world to another as they follow the better weather. So if you have your heart set on a particular yacht, ask the broker for its annual charter itinerary.
Shoulder Seasons
Shoulder seasons are a great way to make the most of temperate climates, fewer crowds, lower prices and more availability. They refer to the period either side of the high season, so in summer would be April and October, and in winter November and March, and offer fantastic opportunities for a budget yacht charter. As mentioned, larger yachts may have moved on to new cruising destinations by this point, but smaller boats or those who are locally-based will be able to offer less stifling weather, quiet anchorages and marinas, less demand for boats and discounted prices.
Chartering a yacht out of season
Seasons have been long-established for a reason, but that isn’t to say you can’t charter out of season. We’ve taken a look at shoulder seasons, and your best bet is to stick as close to those as possible, but you’ll find boats at any time of the year. Keep in mind however that you’re choosing a time when the weather might not be favourable – rain or cold weather can put a downer on activities for example – or you struggle to find attractions and restaurants open. In off-the-beaten-track destinations such as Alaska, ice might hinder access to and from marinas, or strong winds such as the hurricanes which pass through the Caribbean from June to November might make cruising uncomfortable or impossible.
Summer Season Charter Destinations
The Mediterranean is the golden girl of summer yachting destinations, with tantalizing coasts, ancient cities, beautiful islands and rich culture at every turn. From the glamour of the French Riviera and Italy’s Amalfi Coast, to the beauty of the Balearic and Croatian islands, it is the yachting capital of the world. But the Mediterranean isn’t the only summer destination worth visiting, with North America, the America’s and South Pacific on the list too.
1. Mediterranean summer yachting destinations: Greece, Italy, Croatia, Balearic, Sardinia, French Riviera and Turkey.
2. North European summer yachting destinations: Consider northern European countries during the long summer days, where the UK, Norway, Sweden and the Baltic Sea offer up spectacular natural beauty, midnight sun, vast archipelagos and wild coasts.
3. Alaska: Alaska’s wild lands, remote bays and bountiful wildlife make it one of the most adventure-filled destinations in the world. The summer months, with their long days and milder weather conditions, make for the best time to visit the gargantuan national parks, crashing glaciers and see once-in-a-lifetime wildlife.
Winter Season Charter Destinations
The Caribbean is the focus of the winter yachting season, with St Barts, St Martin, the Virgin Islands and Bahamas the tip of the iceberg of what this island-spattered region has to offer. Yet think further afield too, and there are some dazzling destinations waiting for you.
1. Caribbean winter yachting destinations: Whether you opt for the pink sand beaches of the Bahamas, the perfect sailing conditions of the Leeward Islands, or the glamour of St Barts, you’ll find it in the Caribbean. From Jamaica’s legendary culture to the Dutch Antilles and Grenadines, there are corners of solitude, remote islands and lively beaches to discover.
2. The America’s winter yachting destinations: Mexico and Florida share the same Caribbean waters but offer a completely different vibe for a yacht charter. Explore the flamboyant Florida Keys or venture along the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico in search of ancient ruins and wildlife-filled rainforests.
3. South Pacific winter yachting destinations: There are few places dreamier than the South Pacific. Emerald-topped islands, golden atolls and fish-laden turquoise seas beg exploration, whether it’s a family holiday, romantic getaway or once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Countries such as Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, New Zealand, Australia and Papua New Guinea offer virtually year-round charter opportunities the winter months are the driest and offer the most favourable conditions. Try scuba diving, climb hidden waterfalls or get to know the local communities of these far-flung islands.
4. Indian Ocean winter yachting destinations: The Seychelles and Maldives offer some of the most sublime cruising destinations on the planet, their iridescent waters teeming with marine life and their beaches powder white. Sri Lanka has a rich history and national parks filled with wildlife, while Mauritius’ underwater world is a maze of colourful coral reefs.

How Long is a Yachting Season?
When planning your yacht charter adventure, one common question that often emerges is, “How long is a yacht charter season?” Unlike more traditional holiday seasons, the yachting season isn’t set in stone and can vary significantly depending on a range of factors, including the location, weather conditions, and personal preferences. To understand the nuances behind this concept, let’s dive into the intricate world of yachting seasons.
Deciding when to charter a yacht can be a difficult decision
Discover the different charter seasons, which is best, and why
Everything You Need to Know About the Yachting Season
When exploring the timeline of a yacht charter season, it’s important to note that these seasons aren’t globally uniform. Each region has its distinct yachting season influenced by local climate, culture, and regulations. Regardless of location, the yachting season is typically divided into three periods: high season, low season, and shoulder season.
The high season aligns with the peak tourist season in most places. The weather is typically at its finest, and charter conditions are optimal. The waters are often bustling with activity, and local ports teem with vibrant nightlife and events. However, due to the high demand, yacht charter rates are at their highest during this period. Although the busier season, it is of course possible to find peace and quiet from the madness- and this is one of the many perks of yacht charter.
In contrast, the low season aligns with the off-peak tourist season, when the weather can be less favorable. The advantage, though, is that the seas are quieter, the atmosphere more serene, and the charter rates more affordable, making it perfect for those seeking a peaceful escape.
The shoulder season straddles the space between the high and low seasons. During this period, you can still enjoy decent weather and reduced rates. It’s a good compromise for those who want to avoid the peak season crowd without compromising too much on the weather.
How Weather Patterns Affect Yacht Charter Seasons
Weather patterns play a crucial role in determining the length and timing of the yacht charter season. In regions vulnerable to extreme weather events such as hurricanes or monsoons, the yacht charter season is typically shorter and carefully planned around these periods. Safety is paramount in the world of yachting, and all responsible charter companies will avoid operating in potentially dangerous weather conditions.
Sudden weather changes can pose safety risks, making it crucial for yacht charter operators to be aware of typical weather patterns and seasonal changes when planning their schedules. Consequently, understanding the local weather trends of your chosen yachting destination is critical. Researching how long a yacht charter season lasts and how it aligns with the region’s weather patterns is a crucial step in planning a successful yacht charter. - Caribbean : The Caribbean is a popular yachting destination, thanks to its crystal-clear waters and tropical climate. The yacht charter season starts from November and lasts until June, carefully scheduled to avoid the hurricane season from June to November.

- Indian Ocean (Maldives and Seychelles) : With pristine beaches and abundant marine biodiversity, the Maldives and Seychelles are favored by yacht enthusiasts. The yacht charter season runs from November to April, coinciding with the dry season in these areas.
Can You Charter When It’s Off-Season?
Yes, chartering a yacht during the off-season is possible and can offer its unique benefits. The term “off-season” can often be misleading as it doesn’t necessarily indicate bad weather. Many popular yachting destinations still boast enjoyable weather during the off-season. Plus, the lower demand often translates to discounted charter rates and a less crowded environment, which can be a win-win for many yacht enthusiasts.
However, it’s essential to remember that weather conditions can be unpredictable during the off-season, and certain services and attractions may not be available. It’s always a good idea to do thorough research and consult with yacht charter experts to ensure a smooth and enjoyable off-season yachting experience.
An Overview of Yachting Seasons
What are high, low and shoulder seasons.
The high season is when demand is at its highest, often coinciding with the best weather and busiest ports. On the flip side, the low season corresponds to the time of the year when demand is at its lowest, which is often accompanied by less ideal weather conditions. The shoulder season sits between these two, providing a balance of relatively good weather and reduced prices.
The Pros and Cons of Chartering During High, Low or Shoulder Seasons
Every yachting season has its pros and cons, and understanding these can help you make an informed decision about when to charter a yacht.
Chartering during the high season offers the best weather conditions, a vibrant social scene, and a myriad of activities. However, the increased demand during this time often results in higher charter rates and crowded marinas.
On the other hand, the low season is characterized by peace and tranquility, and charter rates are usually at their lowest. However, the weather might be less predictable, and some facilities may be closed.
The shoulder season can be an ideal choice for those seeking a balance between price and good weather. It offers the potential for fewer crowds, reduced rates, and decent weather conditions.
Some Tips for Planning a Yachting Trip During the Yacht Season
Planning your yachting trip during the yacht season requires careful consideration. Here are some tips to ensure a smooth and enjoyable yacht charter adventure:
- Do thorough research : Understand the typical weather patterns, cultural events, and local regulations of your planned destination. This will help you anticipate what to expect and prepare accordingly.
- Consider your budget : High season, with its premium prices, might not be the best choice for everyone. Off-peak or shoulder seasons can offer excellent value for money, and gives more room more potential discounts.
- Book in advance : Popular yachts and destinations get booked quickly, especially during the high season. Early booking ensures you get the yacht of your choice and can help you secure good deals.

How Long Is a Yacht Charter Season
Summer and winter are the two main yacht charter seasons. Each lasts roughly six months. The summer season, popular in destinations like the Mediterranean, runs from late April to mid-September, while the winter season, favored in the Caribbean, extends from November to April. Each Season has peak periods (2-3 months) when demand and prices are highest.
How Long is a Yacht Charter Season in Different Regions?
Mediterranean | 6 | 2 |
Caribbean | 5 | 2 |
South Pacific | 6 | 2 |
Middle East | 7 | 2 |
Factors Influencing Yacht Charter Season Duration
The length of a yacht charter season depends on different factors. These factors vary significantly worldwide but understanding them is important when planning a hassle-free yacht charter or vacation. These factors are:
- Geographical location
- Climate and weather conditions
- Popularity of the destination
Let’s discuss each factor influencing the length of a yacht charter season in detail.
Geographical Location
Latitude determines the sunlight’s intensity and duration. It directly impacts the temperature of water and air. Tropical regions like the Caribbean have year-round warmth and lengthy yacht charter seasons. On the other hand, destinations farther from the equator, like the Mediterranean, experience seasonal variations.
For instance, the UAE boasts sunshine and warm waters year-round, making yacht rentals in UAE possible throughout the year. However, the peak season falls between October and April. The temperatures are mild, and levels of humidity are normal. So, this provides enjoyable experiences to people looking for a yacht charter in the UAE.
Climate and Weather Conditions
Mediterranean | May-October | Warm, dry summers with calm seas. Pleasant temperatures (25-30 C/77-86 F). | Shoulder seasons (spring/autumn) offer milder temperatures and fewer crowds. |
Caribbean | December-April | Dry Season with minimal rainfall. Consistent trade winds. Temperatures average 25-28 C (77-82 F). | Hurricane season (June-November) requires careful planning. |
South Pacific | May-October | Dry Season with low humidity. Warm temperatures (25-30 C/77-86 F). | Cyclone season (November-April) can affect some areas. |
Southeast Asia | Varies by region | Andaman Sea: November-April (dry Season). Similan Islands: December-April (calm seas). | Monsoon season (May-October) impacts some areas with rain and strong winds. |
United Arab Emirates | October-April | Mild temperatures (20-30 C / 68-86 F). Low humidity. Calm seas. | Summers are extremely hot and humid. |
Calm seas, pleasant temperatures, and minimal rainfall mean the best conditions for travel, particularly for yachts traveling around the world . However, these factors vary depending on the destination. For instance, the Caribbean has pleasant conditions from December to April. It has consistent sunshine, gentle winds, and minimal rain showers.
Popularity of the Destination
High demand for yacht charters can significantly extend the traditional boundaries of a season. For example, this is evident in destinations like the UAE, where the many beaches in Dubai entice travelers even outside the peak summer months. Recognizing this sustained interest, yacht operators often extend their services during the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn.
The purpose is to cater to those seeking a more tranquil experience with fewer crowds and potentially lower rates. In addition, this trend is not limited to the Mediterranean or Middle East. In regions like the Caribbean, the charm of turquoise waters and pristine beaches creates a consistent demand for yacht rentals throughout the year.
So, you can enjoy the hidden coves on an explorer yacht in the Caribbean or cruise along Dubai, the best yachting destination in the world with its glamorous coastline. It means the popularity of a destination can translate into an extended charter season.
Tips for Planning a Yacht Charter Vacation Based on the Season
Planning a yacht charter vacation requires thorough planning and preparation. It involves considering the season as well because it can impact your experience. Here are the best tips to ensure an enjoyable, smooth, and hassle-free journey:
High or Peak Season
Always book early. Booking your charter in advance is important to secure your preferred yacht and itinerary. Besides, popular destinations can get crowded during peak season, especially in marinas and tourist hotspots like Palm Jumeirah in Dubai. Factor this into your itinerary if you prefer quieter anchorages.
During high or peak season, you must expect premium prices. Rates for yachts and services, even for renting a yacht for a day, are the highest during peak season. Therefore, you must budget accordingly.
Shoulder Season
You can often enjoy pleasant weather with fewer crowds, making it an ideal time for a more relaxed experience. Rates are lower than during peak season, offering good value for your money. Moreover, you must prepare yourself for slight variations in weather conditions, as shoulder seasons are transitional.
Experience the destination at its most peaceful and serene, with fewer tourists and more secluded anchorages. Yacht charter prices and other expenses are generally lowest during the low season. Research weather patterns carefully, as some destinations may experience less favorable conditions during certain months. So, this will help you rent a private yacht at an affordable price without any hassle.

It’s important to know as the majority of private luxury yachts will change location according to the season – chasing the best conditions, the trends of travellers, and the weather. For example, if you know you want to charter a yacht in the Mediterranean, you’ll need to head there during the summer season. If you were planning a winter break in the Med. you’d be disappointed as most luxury yachts will have moved over the Caribbean for the winter months.
Global Yacht Charter Seasons Definition
Understanding how long is a yacht charter season can be difficult if you’ve never rented a yacht before. In reality, there are two main categories of “season”: high and low, and winter against summer. The terms “ winter ” and “ summer ” seasons both apply to geographic regions and certain times of the year, with the summer yacht season beginning in April and ending in November. So, in answer to the question, ‘how long is a yacht charter season?’, the answer is 6 months for each of the two seasons.
High and low season, often referred to as peak and off-peak season, describes the busier and slower periods of the yachting calendar, with peaks in both the summer and winter seasons. Christmas and New Year’s are the biggest times of year for yacht rentals during the winter, while July and August are the busiest months during the summer. Yacht availability is typically less during certain times, and costs are frequently higher.
How Long is a Yacht Charter Season in Indonesia?
When determining how long is a yacht charter season in Indonesia, the yacht charter season here generally follows the global yacht charter season calendar. Indonesia is equatorial and has two weather seasons instead of four: the wet season and the dry season. These seasons are also known as the monsoon seasons, which affect both weather and sea conditions. The yacht charter season in Indonesia is also referred to as the summer and winter seasons and, just as in other regions, vessels change locations according to the season. From early October (slightly earlier than the global trend) through to the end of April is considered the winter season, with May through to the end of September being the summer season.
What are Yachting Shoulder Seasons?
You may have heard the term, ‘shoulder seasons’ and are wondering, how long is a yacht charter season Vs a yachting shoulder season? There are 2 yacht shoulder seasons each year and these are short periods between the summer and winter seasons. They are basically the transitional period between the two main seasons. Yacht shoulder seasons can offer lower prices, as the season is coming to an end and the weather and sea conditions are not guaranteed to be at their prime. Many vessels, including el Aleph, spend the 2 weeks or so between seasons relocating to their next destination.
Where is El Aleph During Each Yachting Season?
El Aleph spends her time between Bali and the Raja Ampat Islands in West Papua. How long is a yacht charter season in Bali and Raja Ampat? The winter yachting charter season from early October through to the end of April is the yacht charter season for the Raja Ampat Islands. At the end of April and the beginning of May (shoulder season), el Aleph is making her way back from Raja Ampat to Bali – passing through the Banda Sea and Komodo on her return voyage. From early May through to the end of September, she is based in Bali, with options to cruise around Komodo during this winter yachting season too. At the end of September and the beginning of October, the second shoulder season, she is once again making her way back to Raja Ampat.
Can you Charter a Yacht During the Off Season?
It’s not possible to charter el Aleph during the off season as she never has one! We are either enjoying the summer yacht charter season in Raja Ampat or the winter season in Bali.
If you do want to charter a yacht during a location’s ‘off season’, for example, Raja Ampat at Christmas, it may be possible but there are considerations to take into account.
It’s the off season for several reasons – all of which can negatively affect your cruising experience.
How long is a yacht charter season depends on weather patterns and sea conditions. While Raja Ampat is undoubtedly beautiful, heavy rains can, literally, put a damper on your enjoyment levels. Rain usually results in more time indoors as opposed to out on the deck or taking trips ashore to explore.
Strong winds create waves and choppier waters meaning less comfortable cruising and possible limitations on routes. For divers and snorkelers, wind and rain can both result in reduced visibility and can limit access to certain diving and snorkeling sites.
Another point to note is that some boats may be in a location during the off season due to the condition of the vessel and its sea-worthiness to relocate. It could also be due to a lack of crew or a lack of finances, all of which should be considered serious red flags.
The Best Time to Book a Yacht Charter in Indonesia
Now that you have an understanding of how long is a yacht charter season, and the rotations of locations, you can decide when is the best time to book a yacht charter in Indonesia. As one can see, this depends entirely on where you wished to visit. Chartering a yacht in Indonesia is an option at any time of year, however, if you want to visit Bali, then you will need to charter during the winter yacht charter season. If your available travel time is limited to June, then you will need to consider a yacht charter in Raja Ampat.
Conclusion: How long is a yacht charter season?
In short, there are two yacht charter seasons each year, both of which last for 6 months. Yachts relocate between seasons to ensure they experience the best weather and sea conditions all year round. The transitional weeks between seasons are known as shoulder seasons.
When planning to charter a yacht in Indonesia, the best time for Bali and Komodo is during the summer yacht charter season and for Raja Ampat, the winter season.

How Long Is Yacht Charter Season?
By understanding how long yacht charter season is, you can properly plan for your next yacht charter vacation. Here is everything you need to know.
Charter season is the time of year that’s best for renting a yacht for vacations. That is also when most of the charter companies in the world are operating. Typically, there are two yacht charter seasons . That includes the summer season and the winter season.
The summer season runs from the beginning of May until the end of October, while the winter one commences in November to April. However, there are a few exceptions to these time zones, depending on where you are. Some countries will have a shorter season, while others will have a longer one.
Whether you are looking for a one-off charter, a regular source of income, or something in between, signing up for a yacht charter is a great way to enjoy a fun holiday. Keep in mind the best time to sign up for a yacht charter is during the pre-season and up to a week or two before the scheduled start date.
Yacht Charter Seasons
Yacht charter seasons are usually dictated by the water and weather conditions in the area where the yacht is stationed. Many things can affect the onset and duration of a season, including natural disasters, local preferences, and even politics.
According to experts who deal in yacht charters worldwide, other factors can influence when a yacht charter season starts and ends. These include the building seasons from one year to another. Some companies will use up their existing inventory before beginning operations with new boats or newly acquired boats.
Other charter companies will decide to start the business after a particular boat has been on a lease, while others may stop because they have not found an appropriate boat for their clientele to use.
Based on all these factors, you can see how long each season can be and what best fits your needs during each season. If you are planning, it is advisable to book a vessel before it becomes fully booked. If you opt for something last-minute, you will have fewer options and may need to compromise on your choices or settle for something that is not exactly what you want or need.
What Are Shoulder Seasons In Yachting?
The middle point of a season is called the shoulder season. That consists of the time between high and low seasons and between low and high seasons. It can come during a particular season, such as early summer or late spring. It could run from September to October and April to May in some countries.
A good number of yacht charters may already be booked by then, while other companies may still have availability depending on the operators and their business goals.
However, this is also true for the other end of the season, when the peak season ends or just before it ends, with most companies trying to clear out some of their inventory. That is in order to make room for new inventory coming in for the new season.
Depending on your needs for a vessel, this could be an ideal time to book one since there are choices but not so many that you will find it difficult to choose one from among them.
That said, this shoulder season doesn’t last long; therefore, you need to plan, or you might find yourself having problems getting the ideal yacht. If you’re planning on booking a San Diego yacht charter , booking your charter in May or June will be your best bet, because as the summer continues, your choice of dates will get smaller and smaller.
Can I Charter Out Of Season?
Yes, it is possible to charter out of season. However, that will translate to fewer options for chartering a yacht than getting one during the high or peak seasons. During peak seasons, there are many more choices available for you to choose.
You might also encounter problems getting crew members for the vessel, especially if you want to make longer sea trips. In other words, book early and be aware of what kind of season this is so that it won’t take you by surprise. You don’t want to arrive at your destination and find out that no one is available to go with your group on this particular trip since they all have assignments elsewhere.
Also, keep in mind that the reason why there are seasons is because of the general weather conditions. Peak yacht charter seeason is when the weather is best, which also means demand is highest.
How Long Is A Yacht Charter?
Some companies offer week-long blocks or ten days. However, if you have the time and resources, you can charter for several weeks, a month, or even two.
The minimum number of days for a yacht charter typically varies between two and four. Most choose to book their charter for a week. The average cruise with a week-long charter will cost approximately $15,000.
Most companies charge around $15,000 per week, and the price is dependent on the type of yacht and its equipment. A luxury yacht in a premium location could cost up to almost $50,000 per week! The good news is there ar emany charter companies that charge far less than that, and you can look up different locations and yacht sizes that always show their pricing.
The Bottom Line
Understanding how long yacht charter season is in the destination of your choice is critical for planning. Booking in the middle of peak season will be more expensive and give you far fewer options than booking a few months ahead of the season.
Yachting has become extremely popular over the past decade, especially since the launch of Beelow Deck, a famous reality tv series that shows off the yacthing experience.
Our advice is to do your research in the off season and book early to give yourself the best options and pricing available in the market.

You will have a better chance at anticipating the demand for your charter vessel and knowing which dates you can reserve for yacht maintenance or extended yard periods. Yacht crew placement and yacht concierge services are also aided by answering the question: how long is the Caribbean yacht charter season?
Caribbean Winter Cruising
The Caribbean yacht charter season starts around August and September and lasts throughout the autumn and winter months. Charter guests are seeking out the warmer weather and places like the Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands, St. Barts, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and plenty of other tropical paradises that provide the perfect escape.
Peak season in the Caribbean begins during mid-December and the winter holidays all the way to March. The months from April to July are considered the Caribbean’s shoulder season – the time between peak and non-peak times.
The Caribbean Yacht Charter Season
August, September, October, November, December, January, February, March
Hurricane season, which lasts from July to early October in this region, doesn’t hinder the Caribbean yacht charter season at all. However, yacht crew must stay aware of weather forecasts and charter prices are typically lower during these months.
Summer Season in “The Med”
The spring and summer months see a decrease in charters to the Caribbean. This is when the yacht charter season begins in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. Charter guests and the jet-set elite go across the Atlantic Ocean to this region due to its temperate summer weather. However, not everyone goes east.
Sunshine & Warm Weather Year-Round
Since the Caribbean and even its neighboring places like the Florida Keys experience warm temperatures and moderate weather for almost all the months of the year, these destinations enjoy yacht charters year-round!
When you are developing your yacht’s charter schedule, be sure to reserve some dates for regular yacht maintenance services. How Long is a Yacht Charter Season?
A luxury yacht charter is one of the most immersing trips you can take on your vacation. With impeccable service, absolute solitude, and the splendour of the open sea in a dreamlike setting, it’s no wonder the industry is experiencing such a surge in popularity. However, charter trips aren’t always available all year round.
A charter season can refer to either the weather pattern of a destination or the peak demand periods for yacht charter. It is crucial to understand the different charter seasons and how they may affect your private yacht charter service planning, whether you want to escape the sharp winter winds or the humid summer climes.
In this article, we will be going over how long a yacht charter season is so you can plan your next getaway!
How long is a yacht charter season?
Seasons for yacht charters are often determined by water and weather conditions in the area where the vessel is based. The onset and duration of a season can be affected by various factors, including natural disasters, regional preferences, and even politics.
Deciphering the seasons can be difficult if you’ve never chartered a yacht before. There are two basic categories of seasons: winter and summer and high and low. Winter/summer seasons both last around six months and refer to both location and time of year; the summer yacht charter season runs from approximately April/May to October, whilst the winter season begins in November and ends in April.
The summer/winter seasons are determined by weather and water conditions. Northern Europe and the Mediterranean are the most popular locations during the summer season, and the Caribbean, Indian Ocean, and Florida are the most popular destinations during the winter season.
In contrast, high/low season (also known as peak/off-peak season) refers to the busier and calmer phases of the yachting calendar, having peaks in both summer and winter. Christmas and New Year’s are the busiest yacht charter months in the winter, whilst July and August are the most active months in the summer. During these times, yacht availability is typically limited, and prices are frequently increased.
If you are planning, it is prudent to reserve a vessel before it fills up. If you choose something at the last minute, you will have fewer options and may be forced to make concessions or settle for something that is not precisely what you’re finding for.
What is a shoulder season?
The season’s midpoint is known as the shoulder season. This includes the time between high and low seasons and the time between low and high seasons. It may occur during a particular season, such as the beginning of summer or the end of spring. Some nations may operate from September to October and April to May.
By then, a significant number of yacht charters may have been reserved, while other businesses may still have availability depending on the operators’ commercial objectives. However, this is true for the opposite end of the season, when the peak season finishes or shortly before it does, and most businesses are attempting to clear out their inventory. This creates a place for new merchandise arriving for the upcoming season.
Depending on your vessel demands, this could be a great time to book a vessel because there are options but not so many that it will be challenging to choose. However, this shoulder season is brief; hence, you must plan ahead, or you may have difficulty securing the appropriate yacht.
Can you charter a yacht off-season?
Given that different regions of the world experience distinct peak seasons, you will find that you may charter a luxury yacht throughout the year. Keep in mind that the summer/winter seasons are primarily a result of the weather; Although many luxury yachts are remarkably resilient and exploration ships are designed to withstand all temperatures, yachting is generally most enjoyable in warmer regions and calmer waters. Even if you want to sail for a long time, finding crew members may be difficult.
In other words, plan ahead of time and be aware of the season to avoid being caught off guard. Nothing is worse than arriving at your location and discovering that no one is available to join your group because they all have other commitments. Remember that seasons exist due to variations in the year-round climate. Weather-wise, the best time to rent a yacht is during the peak summer months, when there is also the most significant demand.
Therefore, although it may be possible to lease a yacht in Northern Europe during the winter, you may be dissatisfied by the much-increased precipitation and lower temperatures. Similarly, even though both the Caribbean and Florida are recognised for having relatively pleasant weather throughout the year, the hurricane season typically runs from June to November.
We suggest conducting research during the off-season and booking in advance to receive the best selections and pricing on the market. Feel free to visit Phuket yacht charter if you’re on the hunt for future trips across the beautiful shores of Thailand!

Understanding Yacht Chartering Costs: A Comprehensive Guide
Imagine sailing the open seas, surrounded by azure waters, and basking in the luxury of a private yacht. Yacht chartering offers a unique and exhilarating experience, but it’s essential to understand the costs associated with it before embarking on this adventure. In this comprehensive guide, we will break down the various expenses involved in chartering a yacht, from the base charter rates to additional fees and seasonal price variations. We’ll also provide you with valuable tips on how to budget effectively for your dream yacht charter.
Base Charter Rates
The base charter rate is the starting point for calculating the cost of your yacht charter. This rate typically covers the rental of the yacht itself for a specific duration, which can range from a few days to several weeks. The base charter rate varies widely depending on several factors:
- Yacht Size and Type: Larger and more luxurious yachts come with higher base charter rates. Motor yachts are generally more expensive than sailing yachts due to their higher operational costs.
- Yacht Age and Condition: Newer yachts in excellent condition command higher charter rates than older vessels.
- Location: The location of your charter significantly influences the base rate. Popular destinations like the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and the Bahamas tend to have higher prices and local taxes.
- Time of Year: Peak chartering seasons in specific regions can lead to higher base rates. For instance, the Caribbean can be more expensive during the winter months when the weather is ideal.
- Duration: Longer charters may offer lower daily rates compared to shorter ones.
- Inclusions: Some charters include additional amenities such as water toys, scuba equipment, or a chef. These extras can impact the base rate.
Additional Fees
Understanding the additional fees associated with yacht chartering is crucial for budgeting effectively. These fees can significantly impact the total cost of your charter:
- Fuel: Yachts consume fuel, even sailing yachts, and you may be responsible for covering these costs. Fuel expenses can vary depending on the yacht’s size, distance traveled, and usage of amenities like air conditioning and water sports equipment.
- Crew: Most charter yachts come with a crew that includes a captain, chef, or possibly a stewardess, and deckhand. The crew’s salaries and gratuities are usually included in the base rate, but it’s customary to tip them, often around 15-20% of the base charter rate.
- Provisions: You may need to budget for food and beverages during your charter. You can either purchase your provisions locally or opt for a fully provisioned charter, where the crew stocks the yacht with your preferred items.
- Dockage and Marina Fees: When you choose to dock at marinas or ports, you’ll incur fees. These fees can vary widely, and the more popular the destination, the higher the costs.
- Taxes and Permits: Some regions may require specific permits or impose taxes on yacht charters. Be sure to inquire about these expenses before booking.
- Communication and Entertainment: If you require internet access or want to use satellite TV, you may have to pay extra for these services.
- Optional Extras: Water sports equipment, scuba diving, and excursions are often available for an additional fee.
Seasonal Price Variations
The time of year you choose for your yacht charter can significantly affect the overall cost:
- High Season: The high season typically corresponds to the best weather conditions in a given region. Charter rates are at their peak during this time, so expect higher prices.
- Low Season: Chartering during the off-peak season can yield cost savings. However, be prepared for less predictable weather.
- Shoulder Season: Consider chartering during the shoulder season, which falls between the high and low seasons. You may enjoy good weather and more reasonable rates.
Tips for Budgeting
Here are some tips to help you budget effectively for your yacht charter:
- Set a Clear Budget: Determine your total budget, including the base charter rate, additional fees, and discretionary expenses. Stick to it to avoid overspending.
- Plan Ahead: Book your charter well in advance to secure better rates and availability, especially during peak seasons.
- Opt for Inclusive Packages : Fully provisioned or all-inclusive charters can simplify your budgeting by covering many expenses upfront.
- Be Mindful of Crew Gratuity: Factor in the crew’s gratuity when planning your budget. It’s a significant expense and a customary practice.
- Consider Trip Insurance: Trip insurance can protect you from unforeseen circumstances and potential additional costs.
- Review the Charter Agreement: Thoroughly review the charter agreement to understand what is and isn’t included in your charter rate.
Yacht chartering can be an unforgettable experience, and understanding the costs involved is essential to ensure a stress-free journey. By considering base charter rates, additional fees, and seasonal price variations, and following our budgeting tips, you can embark on your yacht charter adventure with confidence, knowing that you’ve planned for a seamless and enjoyable voyage on the high seas. Happy sailing!

'Below Deck' Shows A Piece Of Yacht Charter Season
Even though most reality shows air over the course of several months, they usually film over a very small window, much shorter than the weeks it takes to air the footage. And on a show like Below Deck that takes place during a certain time frame, timing can be very important. So how long is a Below Deck charter season? Well, that depends. If you're thinking specifically of the season of Below Deck filmed for TV, the answer can be just a few weeks — the show tapes over a very short period and Eros charters may each last for about three days, according to Yacht Charter World. If you're speaking more generally about full charter seasons for yachts like the one shown on Below Deck , they can last for months at a time . Depending on where you are and where you want to go, the season starts at different times.
For example, Below Deck films in the Caribbean during the winter, in January — that's part of the regional charter season. That means that January is the prime time to travel in the Caribbean on a huge yacht. But even though Below Deck wraps up quickly, the cast could easily jump to a new gig once their TV commitments are complete, because the full Caribbean charter season is four to five months long. That is a long time to be stuck on boats in close working quarters, which is why Below Deck shows the crew taking breaks, having days off, and unwinding between charters. If not, they'd go insane. They're insane enough without having to work for months straight.
And because renting yachts is a worldwide phenomenon, there's no set time or set place where charters are always going on or come to a total stop. Within reason, everywhere that there's water, you can hire a boat to take you during some part of the year.
For the employees, they can choose to work as much or as little of each season as they like, picking their busy time of year depending on where, when, and how long they want to work.
The time can also be different depending on where you are on the globe, from hot locations where November-April is the preferable season to travel, to the summer season, described by YCF as covering the Mediterranean and Europe, which picks up in May and lasts through October.
If you want to charter a yacht, you can do it at pretty much any time, you just might not encounter the Below Deck crew. To up your chances of meeting the reality TV cast, then heading down to the Bahamas early in the year is your best shot. And it will be lovely weather for a charter.

Benefits of Oyster Yacht Charter: Why Charter?
Oyster Charter
Chartering your yacht provides extraordinary value in terms of carefree luxury sailing. So, why charter a yacht and how does yacht charter work? Elaine Bunting finds out how it works.
Benefits of oyster yacht charter.
With high hopes of sparking a love for sailing, Chris Shea first took his wife, Susan, on a holiday in Scotland in a 32-footer. They spent a week beating round Mull. “I thought we would live the dream,” he laughs.
Shea's family never quite shared his enthusiasm, he says, until 2014 when they decided to charter an Oyster 66 in the Caribbean. “I had been interested in Oysters for many years and when I started to be at the point where I thought I might be able to buy, I decided to charter.”
The moment Susan stepped aboard, he says, “she felt entirely confident in the crew running it. The hostess/cook and crewmate were lovely, entertaining women and it was great fun.” The level of luxury and comfort was a game changer. “The family thought: if this is what we are going to do, that is fine.”
Once bitten by the Oyster bug there was no going back. The following year an order for a new Oyster 56, Magrathea, was on the books, followed two years afterwards by an Oyster 72. Both were immediately and continuously marketed for charter through the Oyster Charter service until the Sheas sold Magrathea in 2015.
Charter allows owners to offset the costs of running their boat and employ crew to maintain it year-round. That can keep a yacht in prime order and provide extraordinary value in terms of carefree, luxury sailing and boat ownership.
After crossing the Atlantic in his Oyster 54, Alan Parker found his horizons expanding. “I wanted to travel further, sailing in the Caribbean in the winter and the Mediterranean in summer, and maybe even further into the Pacific,” he says. He owned a property in Mallorca and thought that an Oyster 82 “could be the same as having a villa but be mobile”, so he sold the villa and bought the five-year-old Dama de Noche for charter and his own use.
“It has turned out to be a great combination. I have a large boat for my personal use but at the same time I have an income from the chartering business,” he says.
Having a full-time professional crew means Parker and his family get to use their boat perhaps more than they might otherwise do. "Being a charter boat it is used much, much more, doing the Caribbean season in winter and the Med season in summer so we are chartering 12-20 weeks a year. But we use it ourselves for about ten weeks a year and we’ve crossed the Atlantic twice,” he says. “Our experience with charter is that you tend to have bigger horizons and go more places.”
Why Charter a yacht?
Oyster’s charter management service was set up in 2005 by the then company owner Richard Matthews and Molly Marston. Why charter a yacht? Chartering is something to be considered by anyone who is thinking of buying a yacht large enough to require crew, says Marston, Head of Oyster Charter.
A full-time crew will establish a consistent maintenance schedule, deliver the yacht to where it should be and look after the day-to-day minutiae. Working together with the crew to coordinate the charter and schedule details, Marston’s aim is to alleviate ‘ownership angst’. “You shouldn’t have to think about your yacht except when you’re using it,” she says.
Richard Matthews owns an extended Oyster 82, Midnight, which he charters through Oyster for about eight to ten weeks a year. “We give charter bookings a priority and then use the time around it,” he explains.
But he emphasises: “The key to the whole thing is understanding that most owners don’t expect to turn a profit, they do it as a way of offsetting running costs. For me, going back 30 years, I have always taken the view that it keeps the boat in better condition and I have the boat moved around. Chartering makes sense, otherwise a boat is like a horse in a stable: it continues to eat.”
The right formula for Charter
So what is the right size of yacht for chartering and what are the costs and income that you could expect? Molly Marston says that “56ft and above” is ideal. Yachts of between 60ft and 70ft would need two crew and from 80ft upwards you would need three: a skipper, mate and stewardess.
The Oyster 885 is something of a sweet spot, in that it borders on superyacht territory yet stays within the 24m ruling for charter coding. Above this size, additional crew, such as an engineer and another stewardess, would be required.
Typical rates for charter vary from €18,000 a week for an Oyster 625 to €45,000 a week for an Oyster 885. If using the Oyster charter service, the owner will net 80% of that.
A yacht has to be available in the right places at peak times, typically in the Caribbean over the winter, and the Mediterranean or New England in the summer. During the winter season from December to April, it is possible for an owner to sail for three weeks and charter their yacht for between four and eight weeks (the latter if the yacht is new) before heading across the Atlantic to Europe.
Owners who want to maximise income have to be reasonable about the use they make of it themselves, says Molly Marston. “But that won’t compromise your enjoyment with reasonable use,” she says.
“As a business, it depends how much personal use you are going to get out of the boat – that is the 64,000 dollar question,” agrees Richard Matthews. “Where and when are you using it and does it leave enough capacity to have a viable business as well?”
“In most cases, I would say yes, but it depends on family circumstances. It works really well provided you don’t have expectations to use your yacht continuously in the high season. You will need to be realistic. Christmas, Easter and the high season of July and August are prime times and if you want to use it then yourself, you may be disappointed,” he advises.
“With the right crew, you offset potentially 50% of maintenance costs with a hands-on approach, ongoing work that would otherwise need to be paid for. And it is a huge advantage that you can turn up and your boat is totally ready to go and the menu planned.”
How does yacht charter work?
Oyster Charter advises on everything from the best layout and models when considering a new build or buying a brokerage yacht for charter, to what equipment and guest amenities are popular. It will also recommend a management company to help with corporate set-up and regulatory requirements, such as MCA coding and MLC compliance, which may be needed to ensure the vessel is legal to charter.
So, how does yacht charter work and how can Oyster Yachts support? Oyster Charter markets the yacht worldwide to clients and industry brokers, puts together all the contacts and charter schedule, handles funds and is the liaison between owner, crew and guests. A starting point is always understanding how much an owner wishes to use their own boat, and where.
“The service means you don’t have to worry about all the contractual and payment issues,” says Chris Shea. “Much more significantly, Magrathea was marketed with full knowledge of my own plans for her use. Prospective customers were matched with the way we liked the boat and the crew to be used.”
“It is totally flexible and I adapt a programme to meet the owners’ views,” says Molly Marston. “If someone only wants to charter two weeks per year, that is fine. If they want as much as possible, that is also fine. The goal is to make chartering a good fit with each owner. We are one of the only companies with in-house charter management and it’s like a boutique – it is customised for the owner and it has to feel right.”

Try it out by chartering a yacht
Most owners operate their yacht as a business and offset business costs, which means that they pay the charter fee and VAT in the country where they use their boat. “You can’t run with the hare and hunt with the hounds,” cautions Richard Matthews. “People fall into the trap of trying to have the best of both worlds and that is not realistic. EU countries have different rules pertaining to charter and a lot require a licence and undertake safety checks.”
He counsels that a good crew is fundamental in making charter work. Finding the right people is also something Oyster undertakes through its introduction and vetting service. “It’s all about having the right crew,” he says. “You are in a confined space and the crew have to strike the right balance as people have different expectations. They could want fine dining or hands-on sailing, or a party, or family time with swimming, snorkelling and paddleboarding.”
But he believes that running as a charter business actually helps with getting a suitable skipper and crew. “Good crew don’t want to sit on the dock. They are there because they love sailing,” he says. Owner Alan Parker agrees. “You tend to find people who are more experienced and like being charter skippers and that opens up new possibilities,” he says.
If you want to know whether owning and chartering a yacht is for you, there is no better way than chartering someone else’s yacht first to experience how it works. It enables people who are not expert sailors to learn from a professional crew. Guests don’t need any sailing knowledge at all, or they can be super energetic, do lots of miles and get hands-on.
Even if you decide to buy an Oyster, chartering can be worthwhile. Chris Shea did exactly that while his Oyster 72 Magrathea was being built. “Building times are substantial so there is plenty of sailing to be done before delivery. There is also the issue of deciding on the options. What better way than to review them on real boats?
Better yet, why not quiz the crew mercilessly about what should and should not be added. The skipper of our third charter must have been climbing the wall with my incessant questioning as we sailed the Croatia coast."
Now he has sold his yacht and is back to chartering on other people’s, he looks back on the experience as entirely positive. “Our crew were very careful and respectful of our feelings. It was extremely good, the boat was never damaged, the crew were happy and we had all the charters we wanted.”
Alan Parker says: “It has turned out to be a great combination having a large boat for our own personal use and at the same time an income. I am retired now so I could possibly squeeze in more time in terms of long-distance trips and potentially go around the world or to New Zealand. That is going into a different phase of usage, though. For now, I have got a very happy medium.”

Long-term yacht charters are on the rise - and here's why
Where once guests felt lucky to escape on a superyacht for a week, today’s charterers are taking lengthier trips than ever. Industry experts discuss why charter clients are now spending more time on board and reveal the epic multi-month adventures at sea they're helping book now
“The increase is obvious,” says Rita Luskovic, head of charter at Princess . “I’ve worked in this industry since 2014, and I’ve never had so many enquiries for long-term charters. It just really picked up when the pandemic hit.”
And Princess isn’t the only brokerage house to notice a shift in bookings since Covid-19 appeared. YPI reported that as many as 41 per cent of its 2021 clients booked in for longer than one week, with another brokerage citing an increase in month-long charters from five per cent in 2019 to 15 per cent of all charters booked last year. Quite the gear change, when the length of an average charter trip is usually seven days.
Remote working and pent-up holiday days are a couple of factors that have allowed charterers to take more time off work. “With the advance in telecommunications, entire families are now capable of combining work, school and play while enjoying their preferred cruising destinations,” explains Ocean Independence senior charter broker Hanneke Maljaars, who describes these clients as “a growing generation of charterers.”
More time on board also means that charter guests can satisfy life-long desires to visit bucket-list destinations or try out adventurous activities such as submarine diving or heli-skiing as part of their itineraries. This is where yachting travel experts like EYOS Expeditions and Pelorus get involved, helping brokers organise excursions to remote Pacific islands or the North and South Poles.
“Really it’s a return on an investment,” explains Elise Ciappara, head of yacht expeditions at Pelorus. “We’re finding more and more people, having been stuck at home for so long, really want to maximise their time on board. And being on board for longer gives you much more freedom.”
Some of the longer charters Ciappara is currently organising include six weeks on 31 metre classic explorer Togo to focus on wildlife photography in Svalbard, five weeks on board 33.6 metre sailing yacht Imagine in the isolated atolls of French Polynesia, Fiji, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands, and three weeks on an African safari cruise between Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique. Ciappara has also developed itineraries for 37 metre Dardanella , available for charter in Polynesia with New Zealand-based brokerage 37 South, and advises that the yacht's shark diving voyage through the Marquesas, Tuamotus and Society Islands is best enjoyed on a month-long cruise.
At EYOS Expeditions, destinations with distinct geographies and abundant wildlife, such as Antarctica , are on the radar of client director Tamsin Vaughan. After being cooped up during the pandemic, Vaughan has seen a rise in guests booking extraordinary voyages that simply can’t be undertaken in just a few days. For such a trip, Vaughan recommends 77 metre ice-class Legend , which she describes as “fantastic for Antarctica and South Georgia, with plenty of toys and also a Balinese spa on board which makes her very good for a long term charter."
An extended Legend cruise around the South Pole offers guests plenty of time to make the most of her facilities, including using the helipad for off-piste skiing adventures and taking the five-seater submersible out for underwater exploration. Other activities that can be arranged by EYOS might include kayaking between icebergs, whale watching, visiting penguin colonies or scientific research centres, climbing spectacular peaks and even scuba diving during long Antarctic days of near-24-hour daylight.
“I think people are just realising there’s so much more to see, and I think they realise that if they’re going to do these amazing once-in-a-lifetime trips, they may as well do it right, to the best extent possible,” says Vaughan.
As an alternative option, Nickie Tannock-Vincent, YPI’s head of charter retail, has seen “families from the Middle East book out yachts for a month or more at a time to give them flexibility to come and go as they need.” With yachts over 60 metres not so easy to come by in high season, “having one ready at your disposal is ideal” she adds, while noting that “this trend is not entirely new.”
Only two per cent of enquiries received through YPI over the last year were for trips of longer than three weeks. For hop-on, hop-off-style charters lasting a month or two, brokers maintain that the Mediterranean remains the number-one destination.
While booking a long-term charter does pose a risk for owners should a cancellation occur, brokers generally seem to sense that owners are on board with the concept and will even offer a discount for longer charters. “We all like long-term charters, believe it or not,” says Luskovic. “It’s an easier charter to have, without too many different payments and not too much checking in and checking out for the crew.” Nicci Perides, head of PR and communications at Burgess , agrees. “A charter rate discount for a long duration is often agreed as the owner isn’t losing time between shorter charters for change-over,” she says.
So what types of boats are being booked for longer charters? “The longer the charter, the bigger the boat they want,” says Luskovic, a comment which is echoed throughout the brokerage industry. Cecil Wright charter manager Vanessa Buck specifies that “the majority of enquiries are directed at yachts measuring 60 metres and more, which allow the space to combine family time with an office for remote work or even potential classrooms for on board tutoring.” Examples from the Cecil Wright fleet include 76.6 metre Boadicea , which received 11 enquiries last year alone for charters lasting over 30 days, and 60.9 metre Arience , on which a 10-week charter was booked in summer 2021 – which “would have been extremely unusual in pre-pandemic times,” according to Buck.
Currently available for cruises along Thailand's tropical coast, a long stint on board Cecil Wright's Boadicea is perfect for families, offering everything from a private office for adults to work remotely to extra cabins for bringing nannies or tutors. Refitted specifically for charter in 2016, Boadicea is even equipped with a private hospital for medical treatment at sea. Itineraries would allow kids to stay active with a day of water sports in Phang Nga Bay or diving excursions with sharks and swimming with sea cows around the islands of Koh Lanta and Koh Muk. Other stop-offs on a longer voyage might include a visit to The Ko Phi Phi chain – as seen in The Man with the Golden Gun and The Beach – where little ones can embark on a real-life treasure island hunt, while older teens and young adults can hit up the nightclubs and bars of Phuket’s lively Patong district after dark.
Maljaars from Ocean Independence specifies that “good seakeeping qualities and heaps of excellent facilities, plus a range of water sports and toys to keep everyone amused” are key elements on yachts being booked for longer charters. Other brokers stress that a highly regarded chef is important; if all dietary requirements, whether gluten-free or vegan, can be accommodated, then charter guests' won't feel the need to disembark to get the best meal. And for those feeling eco-conscious about the amount of time being spent on board, a sailing yacht from the Ocean Independence charter fleet such as 50 metre Meira offers a luxurious alternative that reduces fuel consumption.
When it comes to shorter vessels from the charter fleet, guests who are staying in villas for land-based holidays might book out a smaller superyacht as an add-on, providing the option of a day out on the water to switch up the scenery or practise water sports. For such bookings, Luskovic recommends 23.71 metre Lady Isabella , which can be chartered with Princess for a month at a time. Her petite proportions offer greater flexibility for dropping anchor anywhere along her cruising grounds of the French Riviera, while the toy box still rivals those found on larger vessels. As always, each charter is unique according to the needs and desires of the group on board – but it seems that 2022 is the year when charter guests need not fear overstaying their welcome.

Understanding the 12-Guest Rule for Yacht Charters
Maritime regulations pose limits on guest numbers

By Editorial Team 24 January 2023
"Why is there a 12-guest limit on the yacht I want to rent?" is a commonly-asked question among charterers considering booking a crewed yacht vacation for the first time. To help explain why the majority of charter yachts, regardless of size, have a 12-guest limit, we've outlined the reasons and some points to consider before booking a yacht vacation.
In this article:
12-guest limit on yacht charters explained
What is the reg yacht code, what does this mean for yacht charters, can i secure a yacht charter for more than 12 guests, tandem yacht charters, need more yacht charter advice.
In general, the number of guests allowed on board a charter yacht depends on the license it holds to carry passengers for yacht charters. This can be anything from 4 up to a maximum of 12 guests, usually commensurate with the size of the yacht.
If you are looking to entertain extended family, host your huge social circle for the vacation of a lifetime, or a mix of the two, you might be wondering why most charter yachts do not allow a higher number of guests, regardless of their size. Even for seasoned charterers, the limits can still be a point of contention.
This is largely to do with international maritime regulations, as yachts that carry more than 12 guests are legally considered to be passenger ships, which means they have to meet a different set of criteria to cruise at sea under the Passenger Yacht Code (PYC).
In 2017, the PYC was replaced with the Red Ensign Group (REG) Yacht Code , developed to be more specifically geared towards the superyacht industry.
This code sets out the technical, safety and operational standards for a yacht, including the number of passengers allowed on board. As a result, the code is made up of two parts;
- Part A – (updated version of the Large Yacht Code - LY3) applies to yachts 24 meters and over in load line length, in commercial use for sport or pleasure, do not carry cargo and not more than 12 passengers.
- Part B – (the updated version of the Passenger Yacht Code - PYC) applies to pleasure yachts of any size, in private use or engaged in trade (commercial charter), which carry more than 12 but not more than 36 passengers, and do not carry cargo.
The REG Yacht Code Part B is a superyacht alternative to full compliance with the Safety Of Life At Sea (SOLAS) convention. The latter is a set of rules applicable to most merchant or cruise ships.
The REG criteria for yachts carrying more than 12 passengers sets out strict rules governing design and construction standards, as well as other important safety measures.
Yachts will usually need to undergo rigorous testing, extensive surveying, hire more crew and may even need to be completely refitted. Unsurprisingly, this can be inconvenient, time-consuming and often prohibitively expensive for the owner.
Consequently, many yacht owners decide to keep the maximum number of guests onboard to 12 (plus crew) for chartering.
This means, for example, that an 80-meter yacht with 8 staterooms may well have the ability to sleep 16 guests while in private use, but on a commercial charter is only allowed to sleep 12 guests.
There is a fairly healthy selection of yachts available for charter that can sleep more than 12 guests on board. That said, if you are interested in securing one for your next yacht charter, it would be wise to inform your broker of your guest numbers as far in advance as possible as demand for these yachts can be high.
If you do not secure a luxury yacht rental that accommodates all of your party, tandem yacht charters are a popular alternative.
A tandem charter involves two or more vessels being booked together, and can provide a lot more flexibility. For example, guests may decide to split itineraries between yachts for particular activities (one yacht could take a group sport-fishing, the other for a day's pampering) or divide the yachts up between adults and younger ones (with accompanying staff, if applicable).
For more advice on booking a luxury yacht charter , please speak with your preferred yacht broker . Whether you are looking for assistance on booking a charter suitable for 12 guests or under, or for a vessel that can cater to a much larger party, a broker will be able to carefully curate a vacation entirely to your needs and requirements.

Yacht expert breaks down luxury superyacht tragedy after boat capsizes in freak storm: 'Always limits'
A luxury superyacht like the Bayesian , which capsized and sank early Monday with more than a dozen people on board, is typically built to withstand extreme weather conditions, but not everything is 100% guaranteed, says one expert.
Fox News Digital spoke with eSysman of the YouTube channel eSysman SuperYachts , to find out what could have gone wrong with the vessel.
The host, who identifies publicly as eSysman, told Fox News Digital that a high-caliber yacht like the Bayesian, should typically be able to withstand up to "extreme weather conditions," but qualified that "there are always limits."
"Obviously, any voyage plan will take into account the weather. Wind, wave sizes, and frequencies of the waves will be studied and precise prediction of weather has improved over the years, but it’s still not 100%," eSysman said, noting that it is ultimately the captain who is responsible for the vessel.
WHO IS MIKE LYNCH, THE BRITISH TECH ENTREPRENEUR MISSING AFTER YACHT SANK?
The Bayesian was notable for its single 246-foot mast — one of the world's tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros – or around about $215,000 – a week.

Sicily's civil protection agency said that a tornado over the water known as a waterspout had struck the area overnight.
British tech magnate Mike Lynch and five other people were missing after their luxury superyacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, authorities said.
Lynch's wife and 14 other people survived. Lynch was among six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off the Italian city of Porticello, near Palermo, sometime after 4 a.m.
"There’s always the possibility of survivors. This is why the search and rescue will keep going, no matter how slim the chances are," eSysman said. "But life expectancy in cold water is short."
If a vessel is caught in high-winds, eSysman, [they] will start their engines, and maneuver into a position where the wind is on the bow, avoiding the beam or the side of the vessel from being against the wind.
"We’re not sure if the yacht was at anchor or was sailing. The eyewitness report seems to suggest the vessel was anchored in the bay, but the AIS data's lost position said she was underway, so we're not sure which is correct," eSysman said.
"AIS" refers to "Automatic Identification System," which is a short-range coastal tracking system used on ships.
Per its YouTube channel, the team at eSysman SuperYachts comprises all serving or ex-maritime professions, with eSysman himself having more than two decades in the industry working on various SuperYachts of all sizes "including some of the largest in the world."
The crew and passengers of the Bayesian hailed from a variety of countries: In addition to Britain and the United States, passengers and crew were from Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain.
The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was "providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families."
Built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, the yacht can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.

There are actually two primary types of 'season': winter vs summer, and high vs low. Winter/summer seasons each last around six months and refer to both location and time of the year; summer yacht charter season spans from around April/May through October, while the winter season starts in November and runs through April.
The high season runs between mid-July to mid-August. Popular Summer Charter Locations. The Mediterranean is definitely the world's most popular yacht charter destination for the summer season.
