The Reef Chief yacht docked in Canning Dock, Liverpool today

A huge £20m super yacht has appeared on Liverpool's docks.

Reef Chief, which is registered to and carrying the flag of the Cayman Islands, appeared in Canning Dock at 12.59pm on Wednesday, July 5. The 161-foot vessel arrived in Liverpool after making a trip from Cardiff.

The yacht was reportedly put on the market in 2011 for an asking price of $29.9m, per superyachting website Boat International , although SuperYachtFan.com puts this at $25m [£20m GBP].

Reef Chief was named Anjilis at the time. The same website reports its current owner to be American multi-millionaire James F Dicke II, the chairman and CEO of Crown Equipment Corporation, one of the world's largest forklift truck manufacturers.

The CharterWorld website says Reef Chief's cruising speed is around 18 knots and she includes a spa pool, a bar, accommodation for up to 11 guests and room for a crew of nine people. The website also indicates the yacht is not available for charter although other sources are unclear on this. Other similar yachts are listed for hire at more than $150,000 per week.

Each of the smartly designed rooms feature a TV with Freeview, air conditioning and an electric kettle. Also included is a shower, a hairdryer and free toiletries. Some of the rooms also benefit from a view overlooking The Royal Docks. At Sunborn London there is a 24-hour front desk and a sun deck. The Regal Albert Harbor stands as a cluster of harbor structures and storage facilities in Liverpool, England. Crafted by Jesse Hartley and Philip Hardwick, this establishment was inaugurated in 1846 and became the pioneering edifice in the United Kingdom to be constructed using cast iron, brick, and stone, devoid of any wooden structural elements. Consequently, it emerged as the world’s first fireproof warehousing system[2]. Formerly referred to as the Albert Dock, it earned the prestigious distinction of “Royal” in its name in 2018 following the bestowal of a royal charter.

Apart from its status as the top tourist magnet in Liverpool, the Albert Dock holds the distinction of being the most frequented multifunctional attraction outside of London in the United Kingdom, drawing over four million visitors annually. Within the premises of the Albert Dock, visitors can explore various captivating sites, such as the Merseyside Maritime Museum, the Beatles Story, and the Tate Liverpool. Moreover, the Britannia Pavilion houses two hotels, namely the Holiday Inn and Premier Inn. All five warehouses encircling the dock, identified as A, B, C, D, and E, hold the esteemed Grade I listed status. Additionally, the former dock traffic office is also listed as Grade I. Surrounding structures adjacent to the dock possess a Grade II listing, including the former hydraulic pumping station and the swing bridge that connects the dock to the Pierhead.

Following the revitalization of the dock in the 1980s, an endeavor was made to attract retailers to the newly established premises. However, faced with stiff competition from other prominent shopping areas in the city, the Albert Dock Company Ltd announced a shift in focus towards enticing more bars and restaurants in 2007. Presently, the Albert Dock is home to a variety of bars and restaurants, including Maray, Panam Bar & Restaurant, Revolution Bar, and Whats Cooking.

Multi-million dollar ‘Mega Dock’ opens at Charleston Safe Harbor Marina

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - A recent addition to downtown Charleston will pave a new way for supporting maritime in the Lowcountry and beyond.

Safe Harbor Marina has opened a concrete dock, named “Mega Dock” beside the normal marina port. General manager David Isom describes the decade-long project as “one of the largest floating concrete fuel docks in the world,” costing around $30-40 million to complete.

“One-stop-shop. They take fuel, get provisions from the grocery store, shop downtown, don’t bring any cars with them. They get back on their boat and leave the next day, a whole other group moves in,” Isom says.

The new concrete dock is able to hold an estimate of 20-30 yachts or larger boats at a time.

Isom explains visiting larger boats and yachts will send tax dollars back to Lowcountry agencies. He adds the dock itself could hold up to an estimate of 20-30 larger vessels at a time.

Royal docks finale celebration: clipper round the world yacht race finish 2022.

The Royal Docks will play host to a spectacular finale celebration as the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race finish event will take place next to Royal Albert Dock on Saturday 30 July.

This free event is perfect for all ages and will feature the arrival of the Clipper Race fleet in Royal Albert Dock in a breath-taking 'Parade of Sail'. Cheer on the winning crew, celebrate with friends and soak up the dockside party atmosphere at this exciting summertime event, which will also feature a main stage with live music and entertainment, as well as delicious food and drink.

The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is one of the biggest challenges of the natural world and an endurance test like no other. With no previous sailing experiences necessary for crews, it’s a record-breaking 40,000 nautical mile race around the world on a 70-foot ocean racing yacht.

Starting from 12pm, there’ll be live music from format female DJ Miss DJ Candy, North London-based indie pop artist Natalie Shay and international saxophonist, songwriter and composer Tyler Rix and his band.

That should get everyone in the mood, with the winners and the award ceremony to take place between 2 and 4pm, as we bear witness to the ‘Parade of Sail’ and find out much more about each crew’s incredible journey.

Such a journey and accomplishment deserve celebrations that truly reflect the size of the achievement. From 4.30pm, we’re going into overdrive, with live music on the main stage by singer songwriter Rita Campbell and multi-instrumentalist and songwriter All Pearse, who form PARC.

We’ve got Groove Empire, the ABBA tribute band ARRIVAL and everything is topped off by the closing act – Ivor Novello award-winning singer, songwriter and producer Betty Boo, who’ll be doing the do between 8 and 9pm.

There is so much going on all day, with performers like the Comedy Sailors, Roller Skating Crews, the Silver Darlings all creating a vibrant atmosphere, while street food will be served all day while the Old Street Brewery will be offering a selection of craft beers, ales and much, much more.

Step Aboard SKYLARK… Our 38 Passenger Vessel, and receive a Very Warm SKYLARK Welcome.”

SKYLARK is berthed right in the heart of Liverpool City Centre, at the Famous Albert Dock.

After a short safety brief, we depart our berth and set sail, heading east then south under Gower Street Bridge into Wapping Basin, passing the Big Wheel and Duke’s Dock entrance.

Then we cruise into Wapping Dock; on the east side, you can see the beautiful East & West Quay apartments, which were originally dock warehouses when the docks were operational. Looking west, we pass Staybridge Hotel and the Jurys Inn; we can also see Liverpool’s Echo Arena and the BT Convention Centre. As we proceed under Queens Wharf Bridge into Queens Dock, to the east we pass the Campanile Hotel, Leo’s Casino and the Dolby Hotel, to the west, we see the recently closed Customs & Excise VAT and Tax Office, now exclusive apartments.

A bit further along to the west of Queens Dock is the Liverpool Watersports Centre, where waterborne sports like Canoeing, Dragon Boat Racing, competitive rowing and wakeboarding take place.

Heading south and passing under Mariners Wharf Bridge, we enter Coburg Dock, the start of the Liverpool Marina; here you see some of Liverpool’s amazing Yachts and Cruisers, fantastic boats of all shapes and sizes.

Full steam ahead… past the Yacht Club Bar and Restaurant into Brunswick Dock, where the rest of the 500 Boats & Yachts are berthed; this is also part of the Liverpool Marina. Continuing south, we pass the Brunswick Lock entrance, that leads to the famous River Mersey, and to the east we can see HMS Eaglet, the Royal Naval Reserve and Royal Marine Reserve.

We then turn about, and head north through the Docks at a leisurely cruise, returning to Salthouse Dock, where our journey started.

For the Finale, we sail under Hartley Bridge into the famous Albert Dock, home of some of Liverpool’s finest Bars and Restaurants:

PanAm, The Smugglers Cove, Revolution, Blue Bar, Circo and the Pump House.

On board we have a PA System, playing light background music, whilst one of our crew provides a historical account of our Seven Docks Cruise.

Targeting super yachts owned by Russian oligarchs could hit a nerve in Moscow

With sanctions levied and financial assets seized, Russian oligarchs have been scrambling to get their super yachts out of Western ports in search of safer harbours.

One yacht, said to belong to Russian President Vladimir Putin himself, abruptly left port in Hamburg, Germany, just weeks before the Russian invasion of Ukraine prompted wide-reaching sanctions. Others were not so quick to leave European ports.

Authorities in La Ciotat, on France's Mediterranean coast, seized a yacht they say is linked to sanctioned Russian oligarch Igor Sechin, the CEO of state oil company Rosneft. He was Russia's deputy prime minister from 2008 to 2012.

Analysis With Russia pressing on and Ukraine digging in, how will Putin's war actually end?

Industry watchers say oligarchs everywhere are trying to keep their yachts from being taken.

"There's a few yachts that we are watching at the moment in the Atlantic," said Sam Tucker, head of super yachts at the firm VesselsValue, which tracks and estimates the value of these giant luxury yachts.

"I'm expecting some of them to start doing U-turns in the middle of the ocean," he told CBC Radio's Day 6 .

Western countries have imposed a punishing package of sanctions and export control restrictions on Russia in response to the invasion of Ukraine. Russia's biggest banks were hit, as was the country's central bank. Major state-owned companies and some of the country's wealthiest individuals have seen overseas assets frozen.

The investment bank JP Morgan Chase believes Russia's economy will shrink 35 per cent in the second quarter of 2022 and seven per cent for the entire year.

White House spokesperson Jen Psaki says the suite of sanctions is meant to make every aspect of life difficult on Putin and the oligarchs who protect him.

"What we're talking about here is seizing their assets, seizing their yachts and making it harder for them to send their children to go to colleges and universities in the West," Psaki said in a briefing this week. "These are significant steps that will impact the people who are closely around President Putin."

Symbolic target

The yachts themselves are worth hundreds of millions of dollars, but experts in Russian sanctions say this isn't just about the dollar value.

"They don't have much value compared to the total net worth of an oligarch," said Bill Browder, a long-time advocate for stiff sanctions against Russian oligarchs, in an email to CBC Radio.

But they are "a highly symbolic attack on something coveted by the oligarchs."

These ultra-luxurious ships became a status symbol for the oligarchs as they amassed fortunes in the 1990s and early 2000s.

"There is a bit of oneupmanship," Tucker told Day 6 . He says the biggest and most expensive ships are cloaked in secrecy. They have extreme privacy and security features, including bulletproof glass, and some require crew to sign non-disclosure agreements.

But Tucker says the biggest security and privacy feature of all is the opaque ownership structure of the yachts. He says precious little information about who actually owns these ships is available.

"[Only] basic information is disclosed — for example, the registered owner — which is often a shell company or a 'special interest vehicle' registered in Monaco, Malta, [or the] Cayman Islands," he said.

Untying those knots is a notorious problem, but one usually confined to taxation issues.

"One thing that I think may come out of this whole situation is the increased call for transparency and transparent ownership," said Tucker.

Yachts on the move

So far, only four super yachts have been seized, including a 213-foot yacht owned by Alexei Mordashov in Imperia, Italy.

While authorities sift through the byzantine paper trail of ownership, other oligarchs have scrambled their crews to get the yachts to somewhere safe.

"One of the things I've been trying to figure out is, where do they go [next]?" asked Alex Finley, a former CIA officer living in Barcelona, in an interview with As It Happens host Gillian Findlay .

This week, Finley tweeted photos tracking a ship said to be owned by Roman Abramovich, the Russian billionaire who owns the Chelsea Football Club.

"A lot of these yachts that we've been looking at are heading towards the Maldives or the Seychelles. A few are in Montenegro, but they look like they're probably going to be on the move," Finley said in the interview .

Neither the Maldives nor the Seychelles signed onto the sanctions, so the ships are probably safe from seizure there. Another major hub is Dubai.

"I think we're going to see Dubai as a big hotspot for these yachts," said Tucker. "It has hot weather all year round and … Russians can fly to Dubai without going through the EU airspace."

Tucker agrees that targeting the yachts is a symbolic move.

"It's really sending the message that they aren't untouchable. We've closed the skies on both sides of the Atlantic so their private jets can't operate, and now we're going after their super yachts," he said.

"I'd be feeling quite vulnerable if I was an oligarch right now."

South Docks adjacent to iconic Albert Dock.

There are currently 12 accessible finger pontoon-style moorings all offering

Albert Dock has toilet facilities on The Colonnades and limited shower facilities for berth holders accessed via CRT key. The showers are provided by and under the control of the local waterway and they do not form part of the mooring agreement. The Toilets are public toilets managed by the Royal Albert Dock company and do not form part of the moorings agreement.

A huge £20m super yacht has appeared on Liverpool's docks.

The yacht was reportedly put on the market in 2011 for an asking price of $29.9m, per superyachting website Boat International , although SuperYachtFan.com puts this at $25m [£20m GBP].

The Royal Albert Dock is one of the most popular free tourist attractions in the UK and once you’ve visited, you’ll see why.

Steeped in history, home to a number of museums, great attractions and an array of bars and restaurants – the Albert Dock has everything you need to enjoy a great day out and get a real sense of Liverpool.

Here is our guide on the Top 10 things to do in the Albert Dock.

1) Visit the Tate

Please note: Tate Liverpool’s site at the Royal Albert Dock is temporarily closed for redevelopment. You can find smaller offerings of exhibitions at RIBA North, Mann Island.

The Tate Liverpool is a modern and contemporary art gallery showcasing a range of both British and international pieces. The Tate is free to enter with guests only required to purchase a ticket for special exhibitions if they wish to do so. You can also join a free guided tour which takes place daily- no need to pre-book, just check the times before you go and show up. Free guided tours are currently taking place at 14.15 everyday until 15th October.

Tickets for special exhibitions tend to cost around £10 for adults and if you’re aged 16-25 you can get discounted rates. Again, tickets for special exhibitions can usually be purchased on arrival, but for pre-booking or more information visit the official Tate website .

There is a family area with interactive green screen, books, blocks and workshop space which often hosts arts and craft activities inspired by the exhibitions on show at the time.

On the ground floor of the Liverpool Tate you will also find a cafe, toilets and shop selling a range of gifts, books and art supplies.

2) Check Out Rough for the Best Pastries in Town

Rough Handmade is a boutique bakery selling a range of pastries, loaves and savoury treats which are all baked fresh on site daily.

We’re not exaggerating when we say these pastries are the best around and if you plan to visit, you’ll want to get there early (particularly on weekends or bank holidays) as this little eatery is super popular and is known to sell out of its tastiest goods by late morning.

Top tip: If you have a sweet tooth try the Dulce de Leche and thank us later…

3) Take a Ride on the Wheel of Liverpool

The Wheel of Liverpool has become an iconic landmark within the city’s skyline and at an impressive 60m tall, we can see why. SItuated next to the M&S Bank Arena, the wheel has 42 gondolas, including a glass-floored VIP capsule, all of which offer a great view across the RIver Mersey and the surrounding city.

The gondolas can seat up to six adults and two children (with the VIP capsule seating four adults). The experience lasts between 10 and 30 minutes, with a stop at the top to take in the view.

Prices are £10 per child (under 2s are free) and £13 per adult with senior and family discounts available. There’s no need to pre-book unless you’re visiting during peak times or special events in which case we would advise booking beforehand. To do so, visit the Wheel of Liverpool site here .

4) Learn All About the Fab Four at The Beatles Story

The Beatles Museum is an award winning immersive attraction situated in the Albert Dock. This exhibition tells the story of the four lads from Liverpool who joined forces to create the world’s most loved band.

Inside you will find an array of memorabilia, photographs and replicas of their old haunts, including Abbey Road Studios and Matthew Street. Younger visitors will be kept entertained by the interactive exhibits and a chance to create their own music along the way in the Discovery Zone, which is open to the public on weekends.

5) Climb Aboard a Boat Tour on Liverpool Docks

There’s no better way to form a true understanding of the Liverpool Dock system than via boat. Learn about the history of the docks and get an up close look at the yachts in Liverpool Marina.

Liverpool Boat Tours offer half hour cruises around the docks and can be boarded from just outside Liverpool Tate. No need to book, the tours run daily from 11am and tickets cost £4 per child and £8 per adult. For more information or to pre book visit their official site .

The Floating Grace offers a unique dining experience on board this floating restaurant and bar. Choose from a lunch, evening or afternoon tea cruise and enjoy the sights of Liverpool as you dine. 6) Browse the Local Independent Shops

The Albert Dock is home to a number of independent shops and businesses where you can pick up anything from quirky gifts and souvenirs, homeware, clothing or tasty treats.

Head to Nature’s Treasures for unique gifts, jewellery, homeware and an impressive collection of rare gemstones.

Stop by Quay Confectionary for all the traditional sweet treats including fudge, pic n mix and a great choice of jelly beans. There’s also some impressive Jelly bean artwork on display in the windows.

Check out the Tate gift shop for a great range of art supplies, children’s toys and books, as well as locally made gifts and clothing.

7) Relax With a drink or Bite to Eat on the Dock

The Royal Albert Dock is bursting with a wide array of bars, cafes and restaurants that cater for all budgets and dietary needs.

Many (if not all), have undercover outdoor seating offering great views of the docks. For a quick and casual bite to eat head to Rough for delicious pastries or the famous Docklands Fish and Chips for come classic grub.

For something a bit formal try Gusto Italian restaurant or enjoy the flavours of the middle east at Maray.

Check out Rudy’s for the tastiest pizza in Liverpool. Or, head to Madre for some tacos, tequila and live music.

8) Catch an Open Top Bus

From the Albert Dock you can catch one of the two open top buses that operate in the city. Liverpool City Sights offer two hop on hop off routes. The ‘red route’ passes by all the iconic hotspots including the Three Graces, both cathedrals and Europe’s oldest Chinatown. Don’t forget to stop by at the Philharmonic Dining Rooms for a complimentary glass of bubbly (for Liverpool City Sights customers only).

If you’re seeking to discover more about Liverpool’s historic music scene, check out the ‘blue route’. This route passes by the main city sights before heading into the suburbs where you’ll stop at Penny Lane, Strawberry Field and get a closer look at the streets where the fab four grew up. 9) Explore the Maritime Museum

Found at the heart of Liverpool’s iconic waterfront and Albert Dock is the Maritime Museum . This free attraction offers a unique insight into the past and present of Liverpool’s shipping links.

The museum spreads across four floors with a cafe, shop and offers a variety of interactive exhibitions on Border Control, the Lusitania and the role of Liverpool Docks during the Second World War to name a few.

Head to the second floor for an in depth look into the iconic Titanic. Here you will find out about life on board the ship and delve further into discovering Liverpool’s central role in the Titanic’s story. Little ones will love admiring the large models of the Titanic and other cruise liners.
