- Boat of the Week: How This Rule-Breaking 120-Foot Superyacht Bucks Convention to Create Airy, Open Spaces Inside

Symmetry has been a fundamental tenet of boat design ever since Noah built his Ark. This obviously makes hydrodynamic sense below the waterline, but symmetry is less important when it comes to the superstructure. At least that’s what Italian yacht builder Sanlorenzo is trying to convince the yachting world with its brand-new SL120 Asymmetric. Sanlorenzo has been playing with creative yacht designs over the last three years to update the traditional way of living on board. Robb Report had a chance to tour the new 120-footer at last week’s Cannes Yachting Festival , where it also introduced the SL 90A. The two launches are logical evolutions of the builder’s SL102 , which started the asymmetrical trend in 2018. Rome-based Zuccon International Project designed both interior and exterior, incorporating a “half-wide-body” layout on the main deck. That translates to a narrower space with external passage between the aft cockpit and main staircase amidships. At that point, the yacht becomes a palatial main suite—taking advantage of the yacht’s 25-foot beam—with floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the space with natural light. There’s almost an element of feng shui—the Chinese science of balancing energy through design—with the asymmetric layout. Creating a corridor on the left, and filling the right side with furniture and a fold-down terrace gives the 25-foot-wide salon a sense of openness. Courtesy Sanlorenzo/Thomas Pagani An exterior staircase, also on starboard, crosses the flybridge and provides access to the foredeck living area. The foredeck can also be directly accessed from the owner’s suite. The designers wanted to maximize that forward space for use, incorporating a dinette with a table. Add a fill-in cushion and it morphs into another sunpad that can be quickly dismantled by crew to get to the anchoring and mooring gear underneath. The idea is that this unconventional arrangement makes multiple uses of the yacht’s vast interior volume and exterior spaces. Thanks to the design, the asymmetry is virtually invisible when viewed in profile, so it has a seamless, elegant look rather than a cobbled Frankenyacht. “We used asymmetry in a very clear and understandable way,” says Bernado Zuccon, who was also responsible for designing Sanlorenzo’s Bluegame Yachts . “We were helped by having more space to play with, but we also wanted to create a deeper sensory experience between the owners and their guests, and the sea.” Close contact with the water is provided by sliding glass in the main salon that folds away against the entrance to open up space between interior and exterior. There is another sliding door and drop-down balcony to starboard. The fly deck provides yet more open-air space and alfresco dining, while being shaded by a louvered hardtop. The forward main suite offers views over the foredeck, and a side door leads to a bow enclave where owners can enjoy the private space. Courtesy Sanlorenzo/Thomas Pagani Martina Zuccon’s interior is contemporary, but also discreet and sophisticated. Thai walnut for both the wall paneling and sole is combined with a metallic lacquered finish for the ceilings and brushed finishes for metal accessories. The neutral tones are punctuated with flashes of color, including a mosaic of green tropical foliage on the dining room bulkhead that slides open to reveal the flat-screen TV. The freestanding furniture from Minotti, Roda and Baxter. The yacht’s first owner commissioned an all-glass elevator linking the lower and main decks, a huge structural feat for a yacht this size. Guest accommodations on the lower deck comprise four ensuite double cabins that provide accommodation to 10, including the owners. When the tender and toys are in the water, the garage in the stern doubles as a beach club with a swim platform aft and two foldout decks. This first unit was powered by twin 2,600 hp MTU engines, which deliver a highly impressive speed of 27 knots (twin 2,400 hp CATs are also an option). At full throttle the yacht has a range of 486 miles, but at an economical 10 knots, the boat’s range is 1,826 nautical miles. At the stern, the yacht is fully symmetric, with matching fold-down sides and a large stern platform. It converts into a full-beam beach club. Courtesy Sanlorenzo/Thomas Pagani Sanlorenzo took a gamble in 2018 with its first asymmetric hull, breaking the rules of yacht design. But the bet has paid off and its asymmetric lineup now includes four models between 90 and 120 feet. What seemed like a radical departure a few short years ago, now makes perfect sense. Here are some more views of the new yacht. Courtesy Sanlorenzo/Thomas Pagani Read More On:- Cannes Yachting Festival

First look: Swan 120 – designed for outside livingAt the recent Monaco Yacht Show, we took a look at several of the featured new yachts on display, including the new Swan 120 Being moored stern-to in Monaco’s Port Hercule during the recent Monaco Yacht Show 2021 was the perfect place to showcase a trump feature of the Swan 120. Its ‘beach deck’ with a twin set of steps that gently lead down from the aft deck will rival some of the aft ends of the surrounding motoryachts. The new Swan 98 and and Swan 120 are the latest in Swan’s new generation German Frers-designed range of performance cruisers. These powerful, beamy designs sport twin rudders and plenty of form stability in a style which has already proven popular over the last three years with the 65 and 78. These latest superyacht versions are of carbon-epoxy construction. Geared around ocean passagemaking at speed they come with the option for a telescopic keel, which buys improved windward performance paired with shoal draught capability. By carrying almost max beam right aft on the Swan 120, designer Frers has created the multiple benefits of form stability, huge volumes below and the space to create this aft hangar-slash-beach terrace area. The transom folds down hydraulically revealing a garage for a 4.5m tender and various toys. Deck lounging space has clearly been a key criteria of the design. The vast guest cockpit is adorned with multiple sofas and can be protected by a bimini and sprayhood which rise out of a coachroof cassette at the push of a button. A 1.8m-wide companionway of curved glass then eases you into the deck saloon where there are vast daybeds adjacent to the large hull portlights. We motored away from the dock in Newport on a calm pretty morning. The GPS agreed with the speedometer — flat out we were doing a respectable 8.6 knots on this 40-footer powered by a 38-horsepower Yanmar driving a Martec two-blade folding propeller. Optimal cruising speed would be a little less. Under Sail We headed for a light breeze and hoisted the long-battened mainsail on Harken slide cars with ease. The boat was responsive and maneuverable under main alone and came alive when we unfurled the jib. This J/120 was equipped with an optional carbon mast by Hall Spars. The reduced weight aloft made possible by a carbon spar increases the range of positive stability as well as performance overall. The mast is stepped through the deck for extra stiffness in the rig and better control of sail shape. Off the wind, the boat sailed very well under the asymmetrical spinnaker. Once essential line attachments were made on the foredeck and the spinnaker pulled out of the forward hatch, all spinnaker operations, including using the snuffer, were possible from the cockpit. In light air the 120 moves fast enough to bring the apparent breeze well forward and thus, even with this sail tacked out on the extended seven-foot sprit, one needs to think like a catamaran sailor and tack downwind. The boat we sailed had the standard seven-foot lead keel; a 5’9″ shoal-draft keel is offered optionally. Both keels are narrow fins with an elephant-foot style bulb on the bottom for good stability and lift. The Cockpit The cockpit is very comfortable with well positioned foot bracing for the crew when the boat is heeled. The double-ended mainsheet has Harken 44 self-tailing winches on each side of the cockpit reached easily by either the helmsman or the crew — as is the traveler. All halyards and reef lines lead aft on the cabin house and all winch handles clear the dodger comfortably. The 48-inch-diameter lightweight Edson aluminum wheel permits the helmsman to get well outboard on either side for maximum visibility. The helmsman seating is comfortable both when level or heeled. All of this provides a good balance between shorthanded and crewed sailing. The Interior Below, the ladder had a generous 60-degree slope and side rails kept one’s feet from sliding off when heeled. The interior was light and airy with double staterooms fore and aft. No Dorades were provided; however, the cabin ports opened. Both double berths were a little on the small side and the inboard end of the J sprit did occupy a portion of the forward stateroom; however, given the interiors of most 40-foot race boats, this cruiser/racer had very nice accommodations. The two main cabin settees were long and straight, and could easily function as sea berths with lee cloths in place. While the galley is compact, it is very adequate and the six-cubic-foot icebox is bigger than on many boats. An Origo non-pressurized alcohol stove with oven is standard. The stove gimballed well and was equipped with a protection bar. Construction The hull and deck are fiberglass with balsa core and the boat is built to ABS-approved plans. The boat is laminated using the resin-infusion process, which gives superior quality over conventional production layup techniques. The hull-to-deck flange joint is extra wide at 4.5 inches, and it is glued using a urethane elastomer adhesive. While strength is gained wherever rail hardware is bolted through and where bulkheads are attached, the glue does most of the job. The lack of mechanical purchase in this hull-to-deck joint may make some nervous, but for reassurance one only need consider that most of the boat — in fact most of any FRP boat — is held together by various types of resin and glue in the first place. The new series of “J sprit” boats represents an excellent balance between cruising boats you can race and racing boats you can cruise coastally. Certainly, the boat can be made even faster by removing the lazy jacks, replacing the jib furler with a foil and adding a conventional spinnaker for square running. But that’s not the point. The point is to create a shorthanded cruising boat that can perform, and J/Boats has done a superb job. — Bill Lee To cruising sailors who seek out new models at boat shows, the J/120 is something of a quiet dove among pouter pigeons — built more for flying than roosting. There are no button-tufted armchairs, vanities or mood lighting. There are powerful and easily managed sails, a responsive helm, a light but well-built hull and efficient maintainability throughout. At the dock, the lack of frills gives the boat a Spartan or simplistic appearance, but a sailor’s appreciation builds immediately when under way. Almost invisible details make the boat a pleasure to be aboard. The cockpit is configured for convenience of steering and sail handling. The big wheel and semi-balanced rudder create a fingertip helm, and when I nudged it less than a half turn to leeward while we churned upwind, the boat fell off instantly without any need of easing the large-roached mainsail. An additional benefit of the light helm is that it puts a small load on an autopilot; the blade is powerful, balance point spot on. Form and function take precedence over styling statements on Rod Johnstone’s designs. Moving around the boat is easy and there are handholds and foot braces just about everywhere they are needed. The winch placements are logical and the wide side decks have good non-skid. The deep cockpit locker has a gasketed lid and is also accessible through a door aft of the galley, which allows you to avoid the sometimes painful contortions involved with getting a sail or inflatable dinghy out of the nether regions. There is no awkwardness in getting below. The companionway ladder is sturdy and safe to use even when the boat is heeled and bounding over waves. The J/120, as delivered, lacks a quilted homeyness found on many 40-foot cruisers. It does not lend itself immediately to long-term live-aboards, but there is certainly enough space and stowage for two couples to cruise for a fortnight or more. A few accommodation innovations are worth a closer look. Bedding on this boat can be stowed inside throw-pillow covers — solving the problem of what to do with bedding during the day and piles of pillows at night. Also dual-purpose seat back cushions on the settees serve as cockpit cushions. This solves the bulky stowage problem of deck cushions, but introduces some new concerns about lack of waterproofness and whether bringing damp, salty cushions below creates more of a problem than it actually resolves. One of the few space conflicts on the J/120 is created by the asymmetrical chute in its snuffer, which can remain hooked up to its sheets and halyard and be stowed conveniently inside the forward hatch. This puts it on the forward bunk. The crew must decide whether sail stowage or human comfort wins out in the forward cabin. The value of the J/120 comes from building costs that have gone into substantive structures and quality gear. The base price of $162,600 is certainly attractive, but typical buyers opt for a variety of extras that boost this figure up to anywhere from $220,000 to $230,000. The boat that we sail tested cost about $247,000, which included the carbon fiber rig, radar on a removable pole, full sailing instruments, and autopilot, among other things. It is worth noting that the following items are also on the option list: hot and cold pressure water, 110-volt shore power, refrigeration, propane stove and oven, opening ports in cabin trunk, molded anchor well and removable bow roller. Certainly, the advantage of this is that a buyer does not pay for items not needed. Overall, I agree with Bill Lee’s comments about this boat. I found the J/120 handsome, fun and easy on maintenance. — Sheila McCurdy J/120 SPECIFICATIONS:LOA 40’0″ (12.2 m.) LWL 35’0″ (10.7 m.) Beam 12’0″ (3.7 m.) Draft (deep) 7’0″ (2.1 m.) The Burger 120 Raised Pilothouse Motor Yacht is available in a variety of interior configurations, allowing the owner to partner with the Burger Design Team to create a yacht that is unique to their ambition and personal requirements. The hull shape has been optimized with Computational Fluid Dynamics and the final configuration has been tank tested at the Wolfson Unit in the United Kingdom to confirm performance characteristics. This raised pilothouse motor yacht is designed with luxury accommodations and outdoor living in mind. All areas of the yacht have been developed to allow her new owner the ability to create custom features specific to their lifestyle and cruising needs. “Our focus is always on providing options that excite our clients,” says Jim Ruffolo, president of Burger Boat Company. “We’ll start with a blank sheet of paper or a concept like the Burger 120 Raised Pilothouse Motor Yacht. Either way, we design and build yachts that our clients can take around the world with family and friends to enjoy all the best that life has to offer.” The new Burger 120 Raised Pilothouse Motor Yacht is designed to provide its owner luxury and comfort at sea. Large hull windows provide plenty of natural light throughout the yacht, including the guest and crew cabins. Her initial design calls for an on-deck owner’s stateroom with large windows, his and hers heads, a private office and four guest staterooms, each featuring an ensuite head. The two aft guest cabins feature king-sized berths while the two forward guest cabins are convertible, allowing each cabin to feature a king-sized berth or two twin sized berths. Pullman berths are also installed in the forward guest cabins. The design allows for an eat-in galley with a large pantry. Its expansive crew area features three ensuite cabins for up to six people, with a large lounge/crew’s mess area. The crew area features discrete access to the guest accommodations via a private, watertight door, and direct access to the forward mechanical room, providing easy crew access for maintenance and service. The professional galley features a large dinette for use by the crew or as a country kitchen. As an all-custom build, clients have a wealth of choices for interior and exterior finishes and details. The owner will work in a close partnership with the Burger Design Team to determine the exact specifications of the yacht’s interior layout. The sun deck offers expansive views of the surrounding area and houses a 20’ Novurania Catamaran Tender, jet ski and hot tub. The area also features a day head, large lounging and dining areas, and a helm to starboard. Access to the sun deck is via a comfortable stairwell from the aft deck or via the Pilot House forward. A hardtop is provided for those who prefer to enjoy the shade. The yacht’s interior configuration creates significant space for a large beach club and sports room aft. The yacht also features a large storage area, provided under the sun deck, for water toys, kayaks, cleaning supplies and more. Easy access to this space is via a large hatch aft. 41-foot boat catches on fire- By Stephanie Ballesteros

A huge fire broke out on a boat docked at Schooner Island Marina in Wildwood Crest on Thursday. Click here for updates on this story WILDWOOD CREST, New Jersey ( KYW ) -- A boat went up in flames at Schooner Island Marina in Wildwood Crest, New Jersey, on Thursday afternoon. The fire broke out aboard a 41-foot boat named "Luv-It" around 12:45 p.m. The U.S. Coast Guard said the boat was docked at the marina's fuel station when the fire broke out. Jim Hotter, of Doylestown, and his daughter were out on the water when they heard a boom. "We were going under the bridge and we heard an explosion, and we realized it was at the marina. The weird thing was I just told them, 'I want to pull in and get gas,'" Hotter said. The fire was placed under control around 1:15 p.m. No one was on the boat at the time and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation. A Resolve Marine 400-ton shear-leg barge, 164-foot in length and 54-foot wide, being towed by tugboat from Baltimore, Maryland, is expected to arrive to Puerto Rico before the end of the month. The crane barge carries an a-frame structure with the capacity to do a clean lift during vessel removal operations. Once the barge is maneuvered into position and logistical arrangements are completed, Resolve Marine teams will lift the sailing vessel and deliver it to a location and facility to be determined. During vessel removal operations, one of the greatest concerns for responders is the peak of hurricane season and how potential severe weather could impact response efforts and the transport of the vessel Obsession. “Fortunately, the passing of Tropical Storm Ernesto did not affect conditions at the work site as the vessel Obsession remains aground and stable with no signs of external pollution,” said Chief Warrant Officer Jamie Testa, Sector San Juan Federal On-Scene Coordinator representative for this case. “As we wait for arrival of the crane barge, we continue to work with the experts from Resolve Marine, Clean Harbors LLC, Sea Tow, the vessel owner, and our local and federal partner agencies who have been fully invested in taking every possible measure to protect the environment and minimize any further impacts to the reef and surrounding marine life.” Resolve Marine and Clean Harbors, LLC crews completed the bulk removal of approximately 1,500 gallons of diesel from the four fuel tanks and a day tank onboard the sailing vessel, July 31, 2024. Despite completing the fuel removal, responders estimate a substantial pollution threat remains aboard the vessel Obsession. The amount of remaining oil products and hazardous materials are difficult to quantify due to the machinery, tanks (including a hydraulic tank) and access hatches being completely submerged or inaccessible. Responders continue to monitor and plan to protect the sensitive environment and susceptible endangered species and critical habitat to any amounts of discharge. Throughout the response, personnel from the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) conducted preliminary underwater assessments to determine the impacts on the reef caused by the vessel grounding. Thus far, they have been able to recover and safeguard various species of live corals that will be used to rehabilitate the impacted area. The ongoing emergency Endangered Species Act consultation process helped identify and develop best management practices to protect species and critical habitats of Green, Kemp’s Ridley, Leatherback, and Hawksbill Sea turtles; giant manta ray, oceanic whitetip shark, scalloped hammerhead, Nassau grouper, Queen conch; and boulder, elkhorn, lobed star, mountainous star, pillar, staghorn, and rough cactus corals. There have been no reported impacts to marine life in the area, pending the reef damage assessment. The Coast Guard federalized pollution response efforts and established an Incident Command, Friday, for the vessel Obsession, a 72-foot sailing catamaran that ran hard aground on a reef July 21, 2024. The established Incident Command includes an environmental unit comprised by subject matter expert representatives from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Puerto Rico Department of Natural Resources, who have been coordinating and collaborating in this effort since the day of the incident. The vessel Obsession reportedly was traveling with four people onboard from Puerto Rico to the British Virgin Islands when it ran aground during a stop in Culebra, Puerto Rico. For almost 20 years, we've called this awards program SAIL Best Boats, but this year, we're refining and renaming this program to better and more fairly represent the boats we've selected. Restricting boats to categories and labels—such as Best Cruising Monohull 30-40 feet and Best Performance Monohull 40-50 feet—doesn't bring our readers the full picture.
