8 Black Boaters to Follow in Honor of Black History Month

There's no denying that African Americans have made their mark on boating and maritime history. However, many Black men and women continue to shape today's boating, sailing, fishing , and watersports worlds.  In honor of Black History Month, we're highlighting eight notable Black boaters that everyone should follow.

Emmanuel-Williams

1.  Emmanuel Williams

21-year-old Emmanuel Williams is currently a Sea-Doo Ambassador. Having grown up fishing with his dad in Florida, he has an innate love for the water. After high school, he bought his own watercraft — a Sea-Doo Spark — to get out into open water and start catching bigger fish.

Currently, he runs a successful Instagram account, offering viewers a sneak peek into the fisherman lifestyle.     Follow Emmanuel on Instagram .

2. Khristian "Khris" Rousseve

Khris Rousseve

Khris Rousseve 's father introduced him to fishing as a youngster, and he quickly became enamored by the large reels used by bass anglers. So, he taught himself how to bass fish and eventually teamed up with a competitive angler.

Not before long, he was the first African American student-athlete in Louisiana to receive a scholarship for bass fishing. Not only that – but he made history by securing a spot on his team's starting lineup when he began in 2021.

Follow Khris on Instagram .

3. Captain Nashawn Taylor

Nashawn-Taylor

Captain Nashawn Taylor is a Master Captain, the highest-ranking level within the U.S. Coast Guard. And as a Black woman filling a niche in an overwhelmingly white boating industry, she's making waves.

Captain Nashawn is the brains behind Be You! Charters , a unique boat charter company coordinating paint and sail excursions. In addition, it's the only paint and sail charter operating in the Washington D.C. metro area.

Follow Captain Nashawn on Instagram and Facebook .

4. Rhonda Harper

Rhonda Harper

You've likely seen Rhonda Harper in the news as the organizer of multiple paddle-outs around the world. As a tribute to George Floyd and other Black victims of police brutality, these events intend to open dialogue about the pain caused by continued racial inequalities.    In addition, Rhonda is the founder of Black Girls Surf , a Los Angeles-based organization that advocates for Black female surfers and trains them to go pro.    Follow Rhonda on Instagram .

5. Brian Latimer

Brian Latimer

Hailing from Belton, South Carolina, Brian Latimer (B-Lat) is a rising YouTube star fisherman and established tournament pro. He's fished competitive bass tournaments for as long as he can remember. However, B-Lat ascended to stardom on the MLF/Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit, where he won the Lake Seminole, Florida tournament in 2019. In addition to his famous YouTube angling accounts, B-Lat hosts a fishing series called Straight Up Fishin g on Waypoint TV.

Follow Brian on Instagram  and Facebook .

6. Khadjou Sambe

Khadjou Sambe

Student of Rhonda Harper (see above), Khadjou Sambe  is Senegal's first professional female surfer. Having begun her surfing journey when she was just 13 years old, Khadjou made it her mission to train the next generation of young Black girls to defy social norms and make waves. At one point, Khadjou was the only Senegalese woman in the World Surf League, and she's currently training to represent Senegal in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Follow Khadjou on Facebook .

7. Ayme Sinclair

Ayme-Sinclair

Described by Essence Magazine as a "fierce entrepreneur," Ayme Sinclair is the former Vice President of the National Women's Sailing Association and the CEO of Women Who Sail (aka the largest online community of female sailors). If that isn't enough? She's also the founder of an online community celebrating cultural diversity on the water.

Follow Ayme on Instagram and Facebook .

8. Sheila Ruffin

Sheila-Ruffin

Growing up on Virginia's Eastern Shore, Sheila Ruffin always appreciated the relaxation and beauty of spending time on the water. But when working in St. Thomas (U.S. Virgin Islands) as a coastal and maritime tourism attorney, she was stunned by the lack of diversity among yacht charterers. As a result, Sheila launched a boutique travel agency called Soca Caribbean Yacht Charters , the first Black-owned business of its kind.

To summarize, Sheila says that her mission is "to ensure this industry does not continue to overlook black and brown people and millennials."

Follow Sheila on Instagram .

Conclusion: Follow These Amazing Black Boaters!

As you can see, there are many Black boaters, anglers, and water sportsmen (and women!) you should watch and support.

With February being Black History Month, we are thrilled to introduce you to these epic names in boating and encourage you to check them out. However, it's important to remember that these Black boaters' talent and contributions are worthy of being celebrated year-round.

Did Donald Trump Prevent a Black Man from Boarding His Yacht?

A florida man named jesse pariseau tweeted about an alleged encounter with donald trump which suggested trump was racist., david mikkelson, published june 2, 2018.

Unproven

About this rating

On 31 May 2018, a Florida man named Jesse Pariseau tweeted about an encounter he allegedly had with Donald Trump over three decades earlier, during which Trump supposedly prevented a maritime engineer from boarding his yacht "because [the man] was black":

black man on yacht

However, that single anecdotal tweet appears to be the full substance of the claim. As far as we know, Pariseau has so far declined all attempts by news outlets (including ours) to interview him and verify his story, and he later deleted his attention-getting tweet, claiming the responses it was generating were becoming "scary":

Although Pariseau also stated that he had "told the Trump yacht story about 10 times over the last year," we couldn't turn up any reference to it antedating his initial tweet of 31 May 2018:

We also have not yet been able to locate any documentation of the breach of contract lawsuit Donald Trump allegedly filed against Jesse Pariseau -- which Pariseau asserted Trump lost -- even when we expanded our search after Pariseau corrected his initial account to state the event in question took place in 1988 rather than 1983:

Pariseau also stated that he no longer had documentation related to his claim:

So, for the time being what we have is sensational tale that is not documented by anything other than a personal anecdote offered in a since-deleted tweet.

September 8, 2021

Well, well, well.  Who do we have here?  The one and only, Mr. Free Spirit!  The thought-provoking, man who took us on relaxing and intriguing journeys vicariously through his world is back. Where have you been sir?  Rumors are rampant that you have been sailing around the world.  Are you on this boat?

black man on yacht

Someone asked the publisher, what happened to Mr. Free Spirit?

Here I am alive and well. COVID put a real damper on the lifestyle of the retired. First, COVID-19 (Coronavirus) has affected day to day life and is slowing down the global economy. This pandemic has affected thousands of peoples, who are either sick or are being killed due to the spread of this disease. This being a new viral disease affecting humans for the first time. Thus, the emphasis is on taking extensive precautions such as extensive hygiene protocol (e.g., regularly washing of hands, avoidance of face-to-face interaction etc.), social distancing, and wearing of masks, and so on. This virus is spreading exponentially region wise. The Mr. Free Spirit lifestyle was really affected.

Our vacation to the British Virgin Islands (BVI) had both an emotional and financial impact, we had already paid for our yachts. The recovery of the money spent for the Yachts turned out to be a MAJOR task. The business world said, “don’t worry this won’t last long”. FALSE! Many lessons were learned, paying via credit card made the task of getting the money back was much easier. Our friend Dr. Fagen almost pulled the lawyer card, which made her money recovery easier, however the time expended with the back and forth was lengthy. Mr. Free Spirit received a full refund within 90 days.

Let’s talk about day-to-day retirement living during a Pandemic. The increased hours spent watching TV or on the computer really increased and so did the weight gain on the body. So, now extra effort to exercise to lose the gained weight. Mr. Free Spirit had a new house built and got creative adding a new outdoor kitchen with a vented ceiling. Additionally, he bought a new car with no where to go. The State of FL was wide open, however the funeral business increased expediently. So, staying at home was in vogue, outdoor restaurants had waiting list to get a reservation, so on rare occasions going out to eat was an alternative, but a fear factor was consent in your mind. Then relief come, but so did the DELTA strain. What were we told about the DELTA strain?

“We were told the DELTA Strain is like other viruses, a strain of the coronavirus has mutated into a few other variants that are rapidly spreading around the world. The most predominant strain in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is the  Delta variant , since it is more contagious than previous strains and may cause more than twice as many infections. The CDC even goes on to say that the Delta variant is more transmissible than the common cold and flu, and that it is even as contagious as the chickenpox.

The CDC has also released data back in July that showed vaccinated people can also transmit the Delta variant, which is different from previous strands that have come into play, and it is also one of the reasons why mask mandates are coming back.

“All viruses evolve over time and undergo changes as they spread and replicate,” says a  Yale Medicine  pediatric infectious diseases specialist and vaccinologist, when discussing the Delta variant.

Yale Medicine breaks down the Delta variant into five  things to know:

The Delta variant is highly contagious : One of the most unique things about the Delta variant is how quickly it is spreading; Originally it was identified in December 2020 and was the most predominant strain of the virus, first in India and then in Great Britain. “By the end of July, Delta was the cause of more than 80% of new U.S. COVID-19 cases, according to CDC estimates.”

Now what is the effect on the lifestyle of the retirees? From the Mr. Free Spirit perspective, we have moved our BVI vacation to July of 2023, a cross country train trip which includes a sleeping room, planting a new flower bed at home with flowers that are bright and tend to mentally increase light. Revisit all financial plans so no more crazy new cars.

Retirement should be all pleasure without any moves to make your mental or physical yourself stays in tack. Please keep in mind if you are into or understand sports, this is the last quarter, so enjoy it in a fashion that is complementary with no adverse impacts.

The British Virgin Island Reunion:  The End of an Era by Mr. Free Spirit

Before Hurricane Irma

After Hurricane Irma

I have many friends across the United States and through various conversations below provides some thoughts and efforts concerning the devastation of the recent hurricane season.

We always take things for granted. Just think we celebrated 20 years of going to the BVI a couple of months a go in July and August 2017.  Mr. Free Spirit had all new people and the experience was awesome. Plans were being made about what months we would do it again in 2018.  At night, we watched the houses on the side of the mountains and the glimmering lights, we watched the car lights winding down the mountainside and discussed the regularity of brake jobs a car would need. We ate in restaurants that were basically outside, a roof, a bar, and tables. The people who live on the various islands were friendly and unique. Charmine at Moorings was waiting for my phone call to discuss my articles about 2017. Our Captains were fantastic and we had already told them the islands we planned to visit next year.

REUNION AND REBIRTH By: Niambi Brown Davis

I was going to write a recap of the 2017 BVI Reunion ; the places we visited and the good times we had at each of our familiar, much-anticipated stops. But then Hurricane Irma and Maria roared across the Caribbean, turning the places we loved into piles of debris recognizable only by before and after pictures posted on Facebook. So instead of a day by day recap of “what we did on our BVI Reunion ”, this will be a different take on the Reunion. It’s the story of what could have been the worst day and how it turned out to be the best. It’s a metaphor for what has already begun to take place all across the British Virgin Islands. Since last year Anegada has become my favorite British Virgin island. As soon as I saw its beautiful blue water, cotton candy clouds and silky white sand, the small island became a magical place for me. I was reminded of the Yoruba Orisha Yemaja , whose signature colors are blue and white. If she had a favorite place to make her presence known, this place could be surely in the running. The flowing blue and white top I found while shopping for the trip would be perfect for the day, especially since I planned to join with a couple of friends to pour a libation in honor of our late friend Marvelle Manga .

The morning of our sail to Anegada, the sun was shining, the sails were raised and the wind was in our favor. The crew of Otterside looked forward to liming on the beach and lobster dinner with the full BVI Reunion group later that evening. The perfect day was underway. Great conversations are a hallmark of our group – some serious; so some hilarious we couldn’t catch our breaths, and some “what would you do” scenarios. Last year someone posed this question: What we would do if our captain could no longer sail the boat? My answer: “grab Rhonda Gilbert – quickly!” To me, she has always been our first mate. So when Rhonda quietly and calmly asked another crew member to leave the trampoline and come back to the cockpit, something had to be up. When I saw her and Captain Andrew in a quiet conversation, I knew something was really up. As cool and calm as always, he told us we’d have to turn back. A strong wave jerked open the floor hatch in the salon, and water shot up from the opening straight up to the ceiling. After one quick fix, Captain Andrew took the wheel and turned Otterside back in the direction of Trellis Bay . We’re called “No Drama” for good reason. Nobody panicked. Instead, Geri McNair , our innovative master of meals, put together a quick lunch. This unexpected occurrence definitely called for Dark and Stormy’s and a glass or two of Malbec or Pinot.

At Trellis Bay we lounged, laughed, talked, ate and drank. We took pictures of the Burning Man out in the water, waiting to light up the beach on the next full moon. Our Voyage tech arrived, and lying on what looked like a toddler sized surfboard, he slid under the boat and installed a brand new hatch. “We can make it,” Captain Andrew assured us. Once again, we were on our way to Anegada.. Out in the water, we spotted the British Royal Navy’s RFA Mounts Bay in the distance. Soon it drew close enough to sound its horn. I don’t know much about the “right of way” or “give way” on the water, but the sheer size of the Mounts Bay ruled. It sailed past our bow, on its way to somewhere in the BVI.

A few minutes later, sullen gray clouds puffed up ahead. Thin sheets of rain fell, but we chose to watch the weather outside, sheltered by Otterside’s wide cover. It was a scene too beautiful to miss. As we sailed through the rain, the spectacular scenery merged – a sheet of rain on the starboard side, clear skies up ahead and a rainbow on our portside. At dusk, just before we caught our first sight of land, the flaming ball of sun descended slowly into the sea, framed on either side by a long gray curtain of rain. I stood in the galley, watching Otterside ride the waves through the channel into Anegada Harbor . We had come through a rainstorm into a rainbow, a metaphor for the destruction and rebirth we had no idea would come in less than a month.

Right now, there is still widespread devastation across the British Virgin Islands. For many days, people searched frantically for unaccounted relatives. There was no power and few means of communication. People who sheltered elsewhere returned to homes that are no more, with no means to earn a living.. But gas stations, grocery stores and banks are opened, even if supplies and hours are limited. The RFA Mounts Bay that we encountered on the way to Anegada has returned, along with the HMS Ocean to provide aid and supplies to the devastated islands. The Puerto Rican Navy came through in a major way. Sadly their island has now been struck by similar Some restaurants are open for business. Others have set up stands to offer free food. One of my friends returned to her destroyed home to retrieve whatever belongings she could. Outside she found a small green shoot that had begun to grow on a tree limb. That to me is an indication that the British Virgin Islands is on its way to rebirth, and that they will emerge #bvistrong for certain.

I can’t believe this level of destruction has never been seen in these islands. Homes demolished, while others are severely damaged. The landscape unidentifiable in some places throughout the town and country areas of Tortola. Vehicles littering the hillsides among pieces of galvanize and wood and glass and all types of debris as if the unruly hurricane just decided to turn the whole island into an over-turned waste basket.

Everything that could have gone wrong went wrong. Hurricane Irma slammed into the British Virgin Islands. Wandering around Tortola, the largest of the islands, the scale of the destruction is clear, even after a week of rebuilding. Thousands of homes here have lost roofs and walls, revealing rooms containing the possessions of the displaced residents. Electricity and water services are patchy, while cables hang loose in the wind.

JOST VAN DYKE, B.V.I. — This little island draws boats from all around the globe to its powdery beaches and ebullient bar scene. Thousands of visitors come for the boisterous New Year’s Eve celebration at Foxy’s — a wooden beachside bar decorated with the license plates, dollar bills and flags that visitors have left behind since the 1960s.

But after Hurricane Irma’s winds annihilated many of the homes here on Jost Van Dyke, one of the British Virgin Islands, Foxy’s Tamarind Bar and Restaurant has become something else entirely: the island’s de facto command center and lifeline.

Without electricity, running water or telephone lines, the island’s 298 inhabitants have been marooned, forced to survive with what they salvaged: a satellite phone, a chain saw, a week’s worth of food.

There is little to no government presence on the ground, but there is Foxy’s — which has some of the island’s only generators. Beneath the bar’s tattered roof, residents ration supplies and cook meals twice a day for most of the island.

We had entrepreneurs on our boat and arrangements, negotiations were in place to distribute products.

We had planned the development of future trips to introduce other family and friends, the end of an era.

I’ve tried to find our Captains to no avail, however, we do have information about the two Captains that I’ve known for years and both are safe but can’t get home. Below is the information: https://www.gofundme.com/captain-kenroy-hazell .   Click here to support Andrew Cooper’s new beginning! organized by Deborah Fanning .

Both Kenroy and Andrew were the lead Captains who always made sure we all were taken care of and safe. Stated by Mr. Free Spirit

Andrew and Kenroy not only kept us save this year, but every year that we have sailed with them. These men both have families with some of them still in danger and in need. Anything that we can do to help them get a new foothold in life will be greatly appreciated. Stated by Rhonda Gilbert

Remember the day we all arrived at Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor . I “don’t know nothing about docking no boats”:) but it appeared to be somewhat challenging. Kenroy and Andrew had already docked, but time and time again they jumped into the dinghy and helped others arrive safely through the channel. Year before last, they made sure we used the dinghy as little as possible. We had gone by taxi over to White Bay, but Moonshadow was sitting in Great Harbor. When the taxi dropped us off, we looked up and saw Andrew sailing that BAB Big Azz Boat) across that small space to pick us up. Not only was it a No Drama Vacation , it was a No Dinghy Vacation

Throughout our vacations, we had it like that because of them. As they say in the Caribbean, big ups. Respect. Stated by Niambi Davis

Ms. Bev said they both captains have gone beyond the call of duty for E-Dock & Friends. Anytime I’ve ever asked Kenroy or Andrew for assistance for whatever I needed to carry out a planned activity, I knew that I could depend on them. Now it’s time to let them know that they can depend on us.

What can we do to help?

Many of us wonder, beyond providing immediate funds, what can we do to help our beloved Captains, friends in the BVI, and our brothers and sisters in the Caribbean long-term? Remember Hurricane Katrina? Many who evacuated from New Orleans never returned. The rebuilding process took time, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. However, we must stay hopefully and put our time, talents, and energy toward lending a hand in whatever way we can.

  What can we do?

Pebbles Fagan is considering organizing a group of public health graduate students and partnering with an organization to help rebuild. She is in the process of investigating how she can create a service learning class so that her public health students can help rebuild in some way. I totally agree with Pebbles, let’s do something, we always wait and watch for the Government’s to do something, However, since we know many of the people, it’s time to act and stop watching from the sidelines.

Please contact Pebbles if you want more information ( [email protected] ). Other boaters have also talked about what can be done long-term to help those in the Caribbean who have been so kind and hospitable to so many of us?

black man on yacht

Please consider how your special talents and gifts can best be used to help those who have lost all, but still have their lives.

Mr. Free Spirit said it’s time to stop talking about it and be about it. Let’s do something to help, many of the Islanders were always there for us, let’s go there and help them. Contact Pebbles [email protected]

“Be mindful of the people who helped you, one day they may need your help.”

2017 British Virgin Island (BVI) Reunion: New Discovery by Mr. Free Spirit (Posted July 2, 2017)

black man on yacht

By Mr. Free Spirit, (Posted July 2, 2017)

Remember when I stated:  “This is the last article before the trip, Mr. Free Spirit will send pictures back during the trip for publication and the September article will be the trip summary.”

Well a new development has occurred. Did you know, this will be the largest gathering of Black Boaters/Yachters in the history of Black boating?  We are not talking about the events on the cruise ships, we are talking about private yachts . This event started with one (1) welcome party July 28,2017, it has grown to three (3) welcome parties one July 27 and two (2) July 28 th . I remember my first trip in 2008, I was fascinated with the collaboration of that number of Black boaters. We had qualified Black Captains from the United States. I am now amazed at the numbers of both the experienced Black boaters and the new people that want to enjoy the experience of renting a yacht and cruising the British Virgin Islands (BVI).

black man on yacht

If you read the article in Black Men in America.com , “ How Do Black People Spend Their Money ?,” you will find some interesting statistics:

According to Nielsen:

  • Blacks are more aggressive consumers of media and they shop more frequently.
  • Blacks watch more television (37%), make more shopping trips (eight), purchase more ethnic beauty and grooming products (nine times more), read more financial magazines (28%) and spend more than twice the time at personal hosted websites than any other group.
  • Blacks make an average of 156 shopping trips per year, compared with 146 for the total market. Favoring smaller retail outlets, blacks shop more frequently at drug stores, convenience stores, and Dollar stores.
  • Beauty supply stores are also popular within the black community, as they typically carry an abundance of ethnic hair and beauty aids reside that cater specifically to the unique needs of black hair textures

The overall results are very revealing.

Many of the articles in BMIA are intertwined.  Read the articles about entrepreneurship.  Can you imagine a Black Photographer and/or Videographer investing in going on this trip?  What would be the Return on Investment (ROI)?  Since history is going to be made on this trip, can you imagine the ROI?

Just think how many people it took to make this happen, via conference calls and emails. Below is just a small sample of the groups involved to make this historic event occur:

Boating clubs around the United States have been invited and the response appears to be great. Here is a list of just some of the boat/yacht clubs invited:

  • No Drama Vacation- MD
  • Seafarers Yacht -Club Annapolis MD
  • Seafarers Yacht -Washington D.C.
  • Universal Sailing Club
  • Neptune’s Yacht Club-Baltimore
  • Nauti by Nature
  • Sankofa Odyssey
  • Downriggers Fishing
  • Sailfete-New York
  • Black Boaters Summit
  • Chesapeake Flotillas.com
  • Edock-Ms. Bev—Metro Detroit-Power
  • Chesapeake Flotillas

This does not include all the people and the tremendous efforts on their part.

During a conference call between Mr. Gary Johnson, Black Men In America.com and Mr. Free Spirit a decision was made to document this historic event with a pictorial and/or video slideshow.  Representatives of Black Men in America.com will work with participants after the event and assess the available photos and film to determine the best method of documenting the event.  This will be a collaborative effort coordinated by Mr. Free Spirit.

“Never be limited by other people’s limited imaginations.”

Mr. Free Spirit Out!

black man on yacht

Well it’s almost time, just think this trip has been in the planning stages for a year. It is now time to start packing, checking the location of your passport and notifying your credit card companies you will be out of the United States.

The final list of activities is limitless and sleep will be a rare commodity. Can you visualize yachts of African/ American’s sailing the blue waters of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) together?  The events will be endless and loaded with fun. Just think, beach activates, pool parties, Regatta Sailing Race, snorkeling and all the other activities.

Pebbles said: Like the Jackson’s………”I can feel it”…we are going to have the best trip ever!

Questions are coming in from the newbies? This may help you.

What to Pack?

The average temperature is 85-95 degrees daily. This vacation is very casual. Do not over pack.

Since we will be around water 98% of the time, you will need to pack

light summer wear, swimwear, cover-ups, shorts, tops, Capri’s, t-shirts, flip flops, scandals, shower shoes, sun visors, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, lotion, mosquito spray with deet, trunks, short sleeve shirts, back pack, extra beach towel, camera, games and music. Decorations for the boat.

Pack (1) White outfit for the party at the BEYC. Pack a grass skirt or Hawaiian something for our theme party at Virgin Gorda.

All medications, personal documents and valuables should not be packed in your luggage, but hand carried.

Safety & Security

Leave a copy of your passport and driver’s license number with someone at home.

Emergency phone numbers to leave with someone at home: Do not bring lots of cash. Most places in the BVI accept major credit cards.

Do not bring valuable jewelry.

Make sure your luggage is tagged right when checking in at the airport.

Make sure the boat is locked when unoccupied.

Be extra careful stepping on and off the yacht.

Wear life jacket when on the dinghy or in rough water.

Be extra careful when cooking on board.

Cell phones work in the BVI but are very expensive. Check with you cell phone company before you go to see if they have a temporary plan for you. You can also rent a minute phone while there and add minutes as needed.

Don’t forget your phone charger and/or a good camera!

Some surprise stops have been discussed on the power boat side, see below:

PETER ISLAND

THIS IS THAT PLACE. PARADISE IN PARADISE.

There is no other place like it anywhere in the world. And certainly, no other place like it if you’re seeking a true British Virgin Islands vacation. A casually elegant British Virgin Island resort and spa hidden away on an 1,800-acre oasis of tranquility.

black man on yacht

This is the last article before the trip, Mr. Free Spirit will send pictures back during the trip for publication and the Sept article will be the trip summary.  I did receive a call asking is there any room left for a late comer, the answer is, YES but it is limited. The power side only has ONE cabin available, I am not sure about the sail boat side.

Let us be grateful to people who make us happy, they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.

Well time is really getting close and this reunion will be one for the history books, who ever heard of this many people of color having a boating reunion?

You can’t imagine the efforts in the planning of a reunion of this magnitude, the logistics related in the movement of this many people is a task that is bigger than big. The planning committee has really put a great deal of time and effort to make this venture a unforgettable venture.

Many new things are occurring every day. If you are trying to make your decision about going on this reunion, ACT Now!!! Some of the Yachts may still have some cabins left. After hearing from some of the groups many new features have been added and the earlier features have been enhanced.

As you know I have been sitting in on the national planning committee conference calls for the 2017 BVI Reunion. I must say the conference calls are very detailed and packed with enthusiasm. Many thumbs up to the people around the United States for the time, research and effort they are extending to make this a trip to go into the history books. It was my intent to develop a repository of events being presented by the different organization, however the list of events is just too long and to fluid for me to list.

One of the main questions is:  how many boats and people are going  i lost track at 50 boats and stopped counting. there is both a sail side and a power side and tracking the many events will be difficult to reflect. i feel blessed to be covering this event and during a conversation with a planning representative from new york i stated this reunion will be a true fishbowl. with our current political environment, a chance to portray the ability of people of color to do something positive is a real plus., since i will be traveling on the power boat side i am more familiar with their itinerary, and it is power packed.  e-dock is still adding events. they have people traveling from california, maryland, florida, michigan, georgia, arizona and hawaii to make this trip., since most of you won’t know me, that gives me a chance to interview you for www.blackmeninamerica.com without you knowing it’s an interview.  the opportunity for people of color to meet people from other walks of life will be fantastic. my current column on what it takes to be an entrepreneur will play a big part in the reunion interviews, based on the concept of jump, the black boaters have played a big part in our thoughts to enlarge black men in america.com . we are currently on the drawing board making major moves to expand.  a section on black boaters will be included in the expansion..

Mr. Free Spirit Talks About the 2017 British Virgin Island (BVI) Reunion

September 8, 2016

Moorings 5800 CAT

There is a difference between EXTRA and EXTRAORDINARY.

The 2017 British Virgin Island (BVI) reunion falls into the category of EXTRAORDINARY. Based on some the plans that have been provided to me this will be a reunion that will never be forgotten. Boating clubs around the United States have been invited and the response appears to be great. Let me give you some insight. I attended a small flotilla of boats in Aug 2016. The point of departure was Tortola, British Virgin Islands. The natives greeted me by saying “Welcome to Paradise” and as the week went on I found this statement to be true.  I was also told this would be a group of like-minded people and it was.

The 2017 reunion is of special interest to me for political reasons. The current political environment portrays black people in a very negative manner. I really don’t have time to watch TV, however; when I do it is depressing. The world is viewing black people as uneducated thugs without a brain and the word racist has now become a normal part of peoples’ vocabulary.

The positive things that we do as a race is never recognized. During my conversation with Ms. Bev of Metro Detroit, Michigan, my mouth flew open when she stated she has been living the boating lifestyle for over 40 years.  Additionally, she talked about the number of black female Captains (they own their boats) in the Metro Detroit area that are boaters.  Again, something positive. We also discussed the women in Cleveland, Ohio who are also boat owners.

BVI

A general thought pattern that has been discussed in the white community is “black people don’t go near water,” and that “black people are scared of water.” Both thought patters are false.

The 2017 reunion is shaping up to being the largest boating reunion of all times and it may never happen again. It will be the ultimate FISH Bowl, meaning people from all over will be watching and some of them will wishing they were there.

I am and will watch the list of boating club’s numbers and publish them in a general manner. However, I will be mindful of any intrusion of a club’s privacy . I will never include any boat club’s prices or itinerary in my column .

According to the confirmations that I have received so far, the Black Men In America.com boat is FULL.  Keep in mind, FULL is not FULL until the money is PAID IN FULL.  We have the option of acquiring a second boat.  There are 8 people to a boat, double occupancy.

During my 2016 experience with boating in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), some extremely positive things occurred. All of the partying was awesome.  The food and the process of catering to who eats what was enjoyable also.

One aspect of the trip that I found stimulating was the round-table discussions lead by Doug. I won’t provide the subject matter because I will save that for next year. The impromptu “Soul Train” line in the pool at the Baths is something that I will never forget. We had people from so many cities and everyone got along.  This was a drama free experience.  We lived together on a boat for days without incident.

The pricing structure for 2017 will be completed at the boat show.  The Black Men In America.com price and itinerary will be sent via email only.  If you are interested email me at [email protected] .  Upon the receipt of your deposit all of the information you need will be sent to you as each club operates differently.

Mr. Free Spirit says: “If you want a different outcome, you need to do something different. If you want the same old thing keep doing what you’ve always done.”

Part 2:  mr. free spirit talks about the 2017 british virgin island (bvi) reunion.

October 8, 2016

Tortola

I started the first British Virgin Island (BVI) reunion article by stating: “There is a difference between EXTRA and EXTRAORDINARY .”

The 2017 British Virgin Island (BVI) reunion is moving further into the category of EXTRAORDINARY . Based on some of the plans that have been provided to me thus far, this will be a reunion that will never be forgotten.

  • Black Men In America.com

I know you have a question: Do I know how many boats are required so far? — YES

Am I going to provide the number? Not yet

Based on the information I’ve received; this will be an unforgettable experience. If you miss this BVI reunion written words will never be able to describe it.  As I watch the people doing the planning of this reunion I can only say that they are doing a fantastic job.

To list the events that will occur during this reunion would take too much time and I know I would omit something. As I coordinate the events for our boat I realize this is mind blowing, so I can imagine what others are doing. I can only hope that each group decides to have breakfast late each morning due to the extensive list of activities available. The method of itinerary distribution is at the discretion of each group organizer. For Black Men In America.com we will provide the itinerary via email to those going in our group. Every detail is being reviewed to have this trip smooth.

I rarely get mesmerized, however some of the boat/yacht clubs for the BVI reunion have people coming from all over the United States. I went online to research the room rate per night at a yacht club in BVI that we will visit and it was $ 1,000.00 USD per night.

I attended a party this year held by E-Dock/Ms. Bev/Metro Detroit and I was always told “stepping” in Chicago was a way of life and nobody could touch them. Well, Detroit was really in the house.

Atlantic Creole

You know being the new kid on the block, observing this effort is a sight to behold. I must commend all of the individuals’ doing the planning. The job you are doing is fantastic!  It is almost impossible to write about all of the things going on. I will say if you attend this reunion you will need a vacation upon your return home.

From what I see every detail is covered, they plan non-stop entertainment and activities throughout the day and night, there’s more than you can possibly do on a single week! Whether you’re traveling solo, with a friend, family member, or significant other, the 2017 BVI has fun activities for everyone.

I have received some interesting questions about this trip.  Let me help you!

You know that fancy luggage you have?  Leave it home. There are some wonderful duffle bags on the market and it will be easier to store.

Where do you apply for a US Passport?

You can apply for your US passport at many post offices, selected regional federal buildings and at some circuit court offices. The easiest way to find your closest passport application acceptance facility is to go to the State Department’s website and search by ZIP code .  The search form allows you to select handicap access sites and find nearby locations where you can have passport photographs taken.

This BVI reunion has inspired the Gary A. Johnson Company to publish a new online magazine that caters to black boaters.  A preview of the content can be found at this link:  https://blackmeninamerica.com/black-boating-and-yachting/ .  The online mag is tentatively scheduled for publication in November 2016.  All boaters are invited to submit articles for publication.  More information and submission guidelines will be available next month.

Florida man who survived Bahamas shark attack shares how he kept his cool: 'I'll be alright'

"i was like, hey man, i don't really wanna die right now, this ain't it," marlin wakeman, 24, recalled coolly of the terrifying experience in the bahamas..

A native Florida man bit by multiple sharks after he slipped and fell off a fishing dock while working in the Bahamas kept his cool not only during the terrifying experience but while recalling the attack to members of the media last week.

"I'll be alright," Marlin Wakeman, who lives in the city of Stuart on Florida's Atlantic Coast, said during a news conference at the West Palm Beach hospital where he was recovering after the April 26th attack.

Wakeman, 24, told reporters, including one from the Palm Beach Post, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, he was working on a marina charter boat when he accidently fell into shark infested waters during low tide at  Flying Fish Marina on Long Island and was attacked by two sharks.

At least 20 sharks swam around him when he hit the water and "ended up in a shark den" he recalled of the harrowing scene .

“I was like, hey man, I don't really wanna die right now, this ain't it," he recalled coolly of a terrifying experience, drawing a chuckle from members of the media and others at the press conference.

Reports: Susan Backlinie, who played shark victim Chrissie Watkins in 'Jaws,' dies at 77

When the first shark pulled him under

As he hung onto the boat cockpit , Wakeman said, the first shark grabbed his leg and pulled him under water.

"Kinda scrambled for a second, got my surroundings in check," he smoothly recalled.

When the shark let loose its grip, Wakeman resurfaced and, just as he managed to grab onto the boat’s deck, a second shark tried grazed his right shoulder with its teeth. After that, he said, he did a full pullup to get himself into the boat.

While remaining calm with his leg elevated, Wakeman said, a sailboat guide saw his injuries freaked out and yelled, "'He's bleeding out'... and I was like, hey, can we get this guy away from me? This is freaking me out a little bit."

What do sharks eat? Surprising feeding habits of great white sharks, hammerheads and more.

A boat captain, a tourniquet and a black out

The boat’s captain heard Wakeman’s cries for help from inside the boat. When he saw him, he tied a tourniquet on his leg, pushed him to a van in a wheelbarrow and got him into van where the someone shoved gauze into his leg wound and he passed out from pain.

Wakeman was taken to the nearest medical clinic and was later flown to Florida for surgery.

Massive sharks surface: Pair of great whites surface off Florida coast within a minute of each other

Shark bite narrowly missed an artery in leg

Dr. Robert Borrego, Wakeman' surgeon said, the shark's bit narrowly missed a femoral artery in his leg - which could have caused him to bleed out and die.

After assessing the bite mark, the surgeon said he estimated the shark that bit his leg is about 7 feet long. Wakeman suspects he was attacked by Caribbean reef sharks.

Borrego said he expects Wakeman to make a full recovery. He took out his stitches this past week and said the shark attack victim is “healing nicely.”

Wakeman said he will be more cautious working near the water from now on. He said he “got a little lazy” after bringing fishing gear back and forth from the the dock to the boat, which makes regular fishing charter trips from Stuart to the Bahamas.

Before the fall, he said he jumped 3 feet, rather than cautiously stepping toward the boat.

“I wasn’t really scared at the moment. I just knew I had to get out as quickly as possible," the 24-year-old said. "Thankfully, I’m here to tell the story.”

Dangerous heat and scattered storms possible

Hitler’s yacht sits off the coast of this florida beach. here’s why, the ostwind is one of many strange objects found in florida’s waters.

Anthony Talcott , Digital Journalist

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Nearly 5 miles off the coast of Miami Beach, a yacht sits at the bottom of the ocean.

This vessel — dubbed the Ostwind — has a strange history. It was once owned by Adolf Hitler.

The 80-foot-long yacht was commissioned by the infamous dictator in 1938 as an Olympic racing yacht, though it never actually competed.

According to historian Mike Miller , Hitler’s plan was to ride the yacht into England after Germany’s victory, where he would accept Winston Churchill’s surrender aboard the boat.

However, history had different plans.

After Germany’s defeat, the U.S. reportedly took control of the Ostwind, which was used as a training craft at the U.S. Naval Academy before being sold to a Nazi memorabilia collector in the 1970s, the Ocala Star-Banner reports.

The collector took the yacht to Jacksonville for repairs, but it was ultimately abandoned, and a marina owner then took possession.

Despite offers from a Nazi group to buy the yacht and turn it into a shrine, the marina owner ultimately reached out to Miami Beach officials about using the Ostwind as an artificial reef.

Eventually, the boat was taken from Jacksonville down to Miami Beach in 1989, and it was sunk off the coast to around 275 feet deep, state records indicate .

Nowadays, the only way to view the WWII-era relic is to throw on some scuba gear and take a dive.

Of course, the Ostwind isn’t the only strange object to be sunken off of Miami’s coast.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the following items have also been sunk near Miami Beach to create artificial reefs:

  • Smoke stacks
  • Radio towers
  • A water tower
  • Oil rig structures
  • A railroad barge
  • A minesweeper warship

Texas Governor Pardons Man Sentenced to 25 Years for Killing Black Lives Matter Protester

Gov. Greg Abbott had long signaled that he was in support of a pardon for the man, who has now been released from custody.

Daniel Perry, who was previously sentenced to 25 years behind bars for fatally shooting a protester, has been granted a pardon by Texas Governor Greg Abbott .

In a statement, Gov. Abbott, following the recommendations of the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles, pointed to the state’s Stand Your Ground laws as being among the "strongest" in the nation.

"The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles conducted an exhaustive review of U.S. Army Sergeant Daniel Perry’s personal history and the facts surrounding the July 2020 incident and recommended a Full Pardon and Restoration of Full Civil Rights of Citizenship," Abbott said Thursday. "Among the voluminous files reviewed by the Board, they considered information provided by the Travis County District Attorney, the full investigative report on Daniel Perry, plus a review of all the testimony provided at trial."

Last year, Perry, a white man, alleged that he had acted in self-defense when he fatally shot Garrett Foster, also a white man, during a Black Lives Matter demonstration in the Austin area in 2020. Immediately after the 25-year sentence was handed down, Abbott signaled that he was in support of a then-potential pardon, coverage of which also included alleged racist social media posts attributed to Perry.

In one such message shared roughly a month before the deadly shooting, per an Associated Press report at the time, Perry declared himself “a racist” on Facebook.

"It is official I am a racist because I do not agree with people acting like animals at the zoo," Perry was reported to have written.

The Austin protest in question occurred in July, notably preceded by the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin, who’s now behind bars. As reported at the time, Perry was working as an Uber driver when he fatally shot Foster, 28, an Air Force vet who was legally carrying an AK-47 .

In his proclamation this week, Abbott’s office cited the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, as well as self-defense language found in the Texas Constitution, arguing that Perry was acting "to eliminate a perceived threat to his safety" when he killed Foster.

Perry has since been released .

Boat operator who fatally struck 15-year-old wakeboarder identified, officials say

MIAMI (AP) - Investigators have identified the man who was operating the boat that fatally struck a 15-year-old girl off a South Florida beach and then left the area, but no criminal charges have been filed, according to a report released Wednesday.

The 78-year-old man owns the Coral Gables home where Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers found and seized the docked boat Tuesday afternoon. The man was the only occupant in the boat at the time of Saturday’s hit-and-run crash that left Ella Adler dead, according to the commission’s report.

A Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesperson said the investigation was active and they couldn’t speculate on what charges might be filed.

Ella Adler, 15, fell off while being towed on a wakeboard behind a boat. Before she could be...

Adler and another girl were wakeboarding behind a 42-foot (13-meter) Hanse Fjord walk-around near Key Biscayne, just south of Miami, on Saturday afternoon before falling off at different spots, officials said. A dozen people had been on the boat pulling Adler.

Before the vessel could return to collect her, Adler was hit by another boat, which immediately sped away, officials said. Witnesses described the hit-and-run craft as a center console boat with a light blue hull, multiple white outboard engines and blue bottom paint.

A funeral service for Adler was held Monday morning at Temple Beth Sholom in Miami Beach. Adler was a freshman at Ransom Everglades School in Coconut Grove and a ballerina with the Miami City Ballet.

The unhinged homeless man who allegedly slugged beloved actor Steve Buscemi in Manhattan was foiled Friday when he tried to report stolen property to cops — and an eagle-eyed officer recognized him, according to police.

Clifton Williams, 50, is accused of walking up to Buscemi, 66, on a street in Kips Bay at around 5:45 p.m., May 8 and randomly punching the actor , before casually walking away.

The NYPD identified the bumbling brute from surveillance footage near where the attack took place and had been scouring the city for him, including at a Brooklyn homeless shelter believed to be his last known address, law enforcement sources said.

Williams was hit with a felony count of second-degree assault because Buscemi is over 65.  He also allegedly attacked a 22-year-old Asian man 10 minutes before the Buscemi attack and was charged with misdemeanor assault for that. He said nothing as he was walked out of the 13th precinct to his arraignment.

Cops got a call Friday from the superintendent of a homeless services building in Chelsea, who said Williams had been harassing him over belongings he believed to have been swiped.

When a police officer arrived, the cop asked Williams to fill out a report for his lost property, according to police.

But as he filled out the paperwork, the officer recognized his name and linked it to a photo of the person wanted in Buscemi’s attack.

Gesturing towards an NYPD wanted poster, the cop asked Williams, “Is this you?” — to which he allegedly confessed that it was.

Williams is considered an “a–hole” at the homeless center where he was busted, unhoused folks told The Post.

“His attitude towards people in general is unsavory,” said one homeless man named Aziz.

“He’s called me a cracker and all types of stuff.”

Another homeless guy at the center said there are plenty of actors who deserve a knuckle sandwich — but not Buscemi.

“[Williams] is an asshole. Why would you want to hit someone like Steve Buscemi?” he said.

“I heard he’s a nice guy. He’s not an a–hole like other actors are.”

“I liked him in ‘Grown Ups,” he added.

“The guy just came up to him and punched him on the side of the head for no reason,” a worker in the neighborhood who saw security video of the assault previously told The Post.

“[Buscemi] didn’t see anything. He went straight to the ground and the guy kept going.

“[Buscemi] got right back up with an expression like, ‘What just happened?’ and looked toward the guy who’d hit him,” the worker said.

“The guy shouted something back at him and kept going.”

He launched his movie career nearly 40 years ago and has a catalog of hit films that include “Farco,” “The Big Lebowski” and “Reservoir Dogs.”

He also had a recurring role in the HBO hit “The Sopranos” and more recently earned acclaim for his portrayal of corrupt Atlantic City pol Enoch “Nucky” Thompson in the HBO series “Boardwalk Empire.”

The attack makes Buscemi the second cast member from the hit show to be the victim of random New York City street violence this year.

On March 31, actor Michael Stuhbarg, who played gangster Arnold Rothstein on the show, was out for a run on the Upper East Side when he  was struck in the back of the neck  with a rock.

Stuhbarg chased the fiend, who was busted after running into cops guarding the Russian Consulate.

The NYPD  arrested a deranged vagrant , Xavier Israel, 27, in the assault.

Man arrested for random attack on actor Steve Buscemi

Actor Steve Buscemi

A man has been arrested for random attacks on multiple people in New York, including 66-year-old "The Sopranos" actor Steve Buscemi. The arrest comes nine days after Buscemi was punched while walking down a street in New York City's Kips Bay neighborhood.

The New York Times reported that 50-year-old Clifton Williams — who police indicated was unhoused — was charged with second-degree assault. The charge was increased to a felony because of the victim's age. Williams is accused of walking up to the actor on the street and punching him in the face, before casually walking away on May 8 at around 5:45 p.m.

After the assault police released images of the suspect asking for help from the public.

Buscemi was reportedly treated at a nearby hospital and suffered bruising, swelling and bleeding from one of his eyes.

The New York Post, who were the first to report on the actor's assault, released video of Williams in handcuffs being put into a police car by officers.

Williams is also accused of attacking a 22-year-old man just minutes before Buscemi was attacked. He was charged with misdemeanor assault for that attack, the New York Post reported.

"Steve Buscemi was assaulted in Mid-Town Manhattan, another victim of a random act of violence in the city," a statement from the actor's publicist said . "He is ok and appreciates everyone's well wishes."

The superintendent of an unhoused services organization in New York called police on Friday to report Williams for harassment after he claimed someone took his belongings. Police recognized Williams from descriptions of the attacker and arrested him. Multiple people who spoke to the Post alleged Williams has harassed them or insulted them.

This year multiple women posted videos to social media alleging they were randomly attacked while walking down New York City streets. NYPD responded to the videos with a statement on social media notifying the public that investigators were aware of social media videos "depicting" at least one "woman who was randomly assaulted" in unprovoked attacks.

The NYPD told Scripps News a 23-year-old female was hit in the head in March by an unknown individual and fell to the ground. She suffered injuries to the left side of her face and was treated at a local medical facility.

Following an investigation into the attack, police said 40-year-old Skiboky Stora of Brooklyn was arrested and charged with assault.

Fans are sharing their reactions to the “terrifying” surveillance video of Sean “Diddy” Combs punching and kicking his then-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, in a hotel in 2016.

“This entire is very terrifying… Look at Diddy running after Cassie like a mad man that he [is] just to hit her. And this man has four daughters???? Lock him up right now and throw away the key. God only knows the things he did to Cassie,” wrote one user on X Friday.

“We have video proof so ain’t nothing else to question. Sean ‘Puffy, P. Diddy, Puff, Diddy & Love’ Combs is a disgusting person and anyone willing to defend his actions should seek therapy right along with him,” added another .

“diddy is f–king disgusting. attempting to change his name to ‘Love’ after treating a woman like that is some of the nastiest, most manipulative work i’ve ever seen. pack him up for good. i’m so proud of cassie for getting out,” tweeted a third fan.

“Seeing Diddy run down that hallway half naked while Cassie is right at the elevator trying to get her shoes on, SO close to freedom, knowing she can hear him coming, is something out of a goddamn horror movie. My heart started beating so fast,” said a fourth person .

Some fans spoke out about Cassie’s claims that the now-closed InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles was paid off by the Bad Boy Records founder, 54, to keep the video from the public for so long.

“Diddy was paying hotels off thinking that footage was never going to surface. Wrong. Someone always makes a copy,” claimed one user .

“Diddy paid the hotel 50K to keep the video from going public, but it got out anyway what’s done in the dark will ALWAYS be brought to the light” added another fan .

Social media was set to flames Friday afternoon when CNN released the disturbing video , which shows Combs chasing and assaulting Cassie — born Casandra Ventura — in 2016.

In the clip, the “I’ll Be Miss You Rapper” ran out of his hotel room only wearing a towel around his waist to chase after the “Me & U” singer, 37, as she tried to get on an elevator to escape.

When Combs reached Cassie, he grabbed her by the back of the neck and threw her to the floor. As she lay motionless, he kicked her two times before dragging the model by her sweatshirt.

In a statement to Page Six, Cassie’s lawyer, Douglas H. Wigdor, said, “The gut-wrenching video has only further confirmed the disturbing and predatory behavior of Mr. Combs.

“Words cannot express the courage and fortitude that Ms. Ventura has shown in coming forward to bring this to light.”

Last November, Cassie filed a bombshell lawsuit against Combs, accusing him of physically abusing her and raping he throughout their 10-year relationship .

In fact, the “Long Way 2 Go” singer detailed the incident in the leaked surveillance video in the complaint.

In the suit obtained by Page Six, Cassie claimed that “around March 2016,” Combs became “extremely intoxicated and punched Ms. Ventura in the face, giving her a black eye.”

The mom of two alleged in the complaint that she attempted to leave the hotel room after the Revolt TV founder fell asleep, but he woke up and “followed her into the hallway of the hotel while yelling at her.”

“He grabbed at her, and then took glass vases in the hallway and threw them at her, causing glass to crash around them as she ran to the elevator to escape,” the suit alleged.

Cassie also claimed in the lawsuit that Combs raped her in her apartment “while she repeatedly said ‘no’ and tried to push him away.”

Though Combs denied the allegations, the lawsuit was settled the next day.

Since Cassie’s suit, the hip-hop mogul has faced four other civil lawsuits  accusing him of a range of sexual misconduct and other illegal activity.

Combs has denied all claims.
