An handful of Narcissus Sailboat

Narcissus ‘Sailboat’

Description.

The dainty, feminine blooms of ‘Sailboat’ are the first to appear in the garden each spring. These petite-size cuties are perfect for the front of the border and are also well suited for pots and small spaces. Outer ivory petals have an iridescent quality and frame pale buttercream centers. Flowers have an antique feel and are borne in sprays on dark green, grass-like foliage. The longest-lasting narcissus we’ve ever grown, this variety will persist for many weeks in the garden and ages gracefully. It also makes an excellent cut flower and fills the room with its jasmine-like fragrance.

Please note: When cut, daffodils and narcissus emit a toxic sap that can cause skin irritation. Use caution and wear gloves when harvesting.

Harvesting/Vase Life

For the longest vase life, harvest when blooms look like a goose neck and have not yet opened. Flowers can also be picked when they’ve opened more, just keep in mind that they won’t last quite as long. Wear gloves when harvesting narcissus, as they ooze a slimy sap that can cause skin irritation. This slimy sap can shorten the vase life of other flowers significantly. To avoid affecting other blooms in an arrangement, you’ll need to “condition” them first. To do this, place freshly cut stems in a separate bucket to rest for 3 to 4 hours to release sap. Do not recut stems after treatment. You can create an arrangement solely of narcissus and the sap won’t be an issue. Expect a vase life of 7 days.

How to Grow

How To Grow Narcissus

How To Grow Narcissus

Daffodils and narcissus are a diverse group with great appeal—you can find varieties that are miniature, fragrant, ruffled, double-bloomed, and multicolored. They are hardy, easy to grow, and rarely plagued by pests or disease. But the best thing about growing these delightful flowers is that they arrive in early spring, long before the rest of the garden wakes up.

Sailboat Jonquil

Narcissus ‘Sailboat’ is in Division 7. It blooms in mid spring with 2½ inch flowers. The petals are reflexed and white while the corona opens yellow but matures to white. The bulbs are toxic and will not be eaten by deer or rabbits. The name Narcissus comes from the Greek word for narcotic and is tied to the myth of a young man known as Narcissus who fell in love with his own reflection. When he drowned in the pool where he had been admiring himself, Narcissus flowers grew up around the pool.

With up to three fragrant flowers per stem, award-winning Narcissus ‘Sailboat’ is a superb addition to pots and borders, flowering in early to mid-spring. The butter-yellow cups gradually fade to cream as the flowers mature.

Narcissus’ Sailboat’ looks lovely planted with blue grape hyacinths or simply on its own in a container on a sunny patio. The fragrant flowers are ideal for cutting.

How you will receive your bulbs:

Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, you will receive spring-flowering bulbs in the autumn in a breathable mesh bag. This is to keep the bulbs together in a pack that is nice and airy – perfect to keep the bulbs healthy while in transit.

Can’t plant straight away?

Keep your bulbs in a cool, light, and dry place and preferably hanging on a hook so that air can get to the bulbs at all angles. Ideally, you should aim to plant your bulbs within a week of receiving them, but if this is not possible, store them in a cool, dark place until you are ready to plant them.

Planting tips and hints:

Planting in the ground: You can plant your daffodil bulbs any time between September and November. Dig a hole with a trowel or a bulb planter 3 times the depth of the bulb, approximately 10cm deep. Plant bulbs approximately 15cm apart. If your soil is heavy, mix in quality bulb compost and potting grit to give them the best start. Place the bulb in the hole with the tip facing upwards, then fill the hole and compact the soil gently. Water in to moisten the soil and apply a bone meal fertiliser to encourage flowering.

Planting in containers: Place a layer of stones or gravel at the bottom of a large container in order to aid drainage. Fill the container with bulb compost to approximately 20cm below the rim. Place bulbs approximately 5-8cm apart ensuring the tips face up. Fill the container to about 3cm from the top of the rim making sure to firm the compost between the bulbs. Water just enough to settle the soil, then place the container in a sheltered place over autumn and winter before moving into a sunny place when the shoots are around 5cm tall.

Feeding and aftercare: When feeding in spring, use a liquid feed high in potash so it gets to the growing bulb quickly, feeding the roots. Deadhead the daffodils as soon as the flower fades to ensure energy is sent down back into the bulb. You will be able to leave the bulbs in the ground if your soil is free-draining and sandy.

  • Description

Daffodils are the most cost effective, pest-free, long-term perennial plants available and make wonderful companions with other bulbs, perennials, annuals and flowering shrubs. They grow in almost all areas of the United States as long as there is a discernible winter. They are pest-free and when given ample sunlight, water and proper nutrition, will provide early spring color for many years. They are divided into 13 divisions according to their flower shape and heritage and we have put the American Daffodil Society’s descriptions in quotes (” “) and caps at the beginning of each division. Daffodils should be planted in full sun or at least 1/2 day (8 hours) of direct sunlight after the leaves are on the trees and should be planted 3x the height of their bulb deep (3″-8”) in compost enriched soil. Daffodils are wonderful flowers to pick for arrangements.

According to the ADS:  DIVISION 7 – JONQUILLA “One to five flowers to a stem; perianth segments spreading or reflexed; flowers usually fragrant”.  Foliage is often reed-like or at least very narrow and dark green; most like the hot baking summer sun; great for Southern gardens although many are adaptable in cooler climates as well; lovely, sweet fragrance that acts as a natural air freshener; most are great in pots; 12/14 cm unless otherwise noted; whz 4-9.

Bulb blindness

Bulbs produce lovely foliage but no flowers. Either no buds at all appear or those that do are dry and virtually empty of petals. Daffodils (Narcissi) are usually the worst affects, especially multi-headed or double forms.

Simple but stylish protection

If rabbits, deer, squirrels or cats devour or scratch up your plants these wire mesh protectors will give them time to get established. The pyramid-shaped 'Rabbit Proof Cloche' and dome-shaped 'Squirrel Proof Cloche'

Plan ahead with bulbs

One of the great things about gardening is being able to look into the future with enthusiasm, and part of that is planting now for next spring. A gardener knows, when handling papery brown bulbs, that these insignificant little things will produce early

Be adventurous with new Narcissus, plus which ones are the best scented

It’s far too easy to keep ordering the same old thing, but it’s really worth experimenting because new bulbs are being released all the time, whilst some of the tried and tested are beginning to break down. The best way to try something new is to grow ten

Sailboat Daffodil

About this product, description.

Naturalizing Daffodils: Probably nothing in the gardening world is more foolproof and more rewarding than 'naturalizing' daffodils. These fantastic plants are super-easy to plant in fall, they don't care about soil as long as it's well-drained, and they'll bloom beautifully for you with absolutely no work every spring after you plant them. Best of all, Daffodils naturalize and spread over the years, each bulb developing into a blooming clump. In a new or established wildflower meadow, the wildflower plants grow up around the daffodils to hide the fading foliage. They’re reliably critter resistant, too. Plant plenty to enjoy the cheerful spring blooms, with extras for cut flowers too.

Description

A daffodil with the wind in its sails! Narcissus 'Sailboat' has that air of optimism with its energetically swept back petals, as if caught in a spring breeze. In fact, these Jonquil daffodils are like an entire flotilla of sailboats, creating a floriferous crowd thanks to their multiple blooms on every stem. Each one of these delightful little flowers has a gorgeous scent, as well as lovely soft colours, with an ivory-white perianth and a pale yellow cup. A recipient of a prestigious Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), Narcissus 'Sailboat' has won the daffodil regatta!

Make the most of this characterful daffodil by planting Narcissus 'Sailboat' in large groups or drifts. Flowering in mid spring, it looks delightful mixed with grape hyacinths (Muscari armeniacum) .  To fully enjoy their lovely scent, why not plant up several pots of these bulbs by a doorway, or place them on your patio table within sniffing distance.
