What You Need to Know About Small Boats

Small boats are the best option out there for beginners. Or for seasoned boaters who just don’t want to need a big boat. But understanding what a small boat even is may be harder than you think. Likewise, learning what you need on your small boat can be a challenge.

Under some definitions, a small boat is anything under 64 feet. That’s because anything bigger than that is subject to different marine rules. But 64 feet is certainly far too big for many people. Compare that to a canoe which may be 17 feet in length. Or a pontoon boat which could be 18 feet up to 35 feet.

With so many small boats out there, you need to know what each type of boat has to offer. This also depends on what boating activities you need it for. Will this be a fishing boat? Something for water sports. A pleasure vessel? Are deck boats or bow riders better?

Let’s take a look at some small boat types. Find out what your options are. Go over the boat buying process. And also cover what you need to have on your small boat regardless of what it’s for.

What Types of Small Boats Are There?

When you’re in the market for a small boat, you have a lot of options. Your needs and budget will dictate what type is best for you. Keep in mind, boating safety applies no matter what type of boat you have.

Canoes and Kayaks

Canoes and kayaks are some of the oldest boats in the world. These type of boat can literally be as simple as a hollowed-out log. Canoes may date back as far as 8,200 BC. The basic design and operation has changed little in all that time. As simple as they look, you need experience to use them well.

A kayak is not too dissimilar from a canoe. It’s designed for a single person to use, however. Both a canoe and kayak rely on oars to move through the water. Either can be used for leisure boating or even fishing. Canoes tend to make better fishing boats.

Ski boats are ideal for water sports. In fact, the name ski boat is because they were designed for water skiing. You can water ski with other kinds of boats. Ski boats are designed to make water skiing easier. They can accelerate quickly but minimize wake for the skier.

This includes things like jet skis and SeaDoos. SeaDoo is actually a brand name, but people often use it generally. Even though these craft are fast and fun, they still qualify as boats. They were built for one rider, and in some cases two. Because of that, they don’t have a lot of utility purposes. You wouldn’t go fishing off of a personal watercraft.

Inflatables

Inflatables can be very basic boats or more complex. A wholly inflatable boat is more of a dinghy or a leisure device. You might let your kids use a totally inflatable boat.

There is a second kind of inflatable that is more sturdy. These rigid inflatable boats are much together. They feature a sturdy frame with inflatable rings. These will sometimes be used as emergency rescue craft. They can handle harsher waters than a simple inflatable.

A skiff is really many kinds of small vessels. It’s likely what you picture when you think of a guy along on the lake fishing. The bow will be squared off and there may be an outboard motor. There is seating for one or two people. It’s a simple vessel for fishing or leisure boating. Generally these are used on rivers or small lakes and ponds.

Jon boats are classic fishing and transport boats. They are some of the simplest vessels on the water. A Jon boat is usually just a flat bottom vessel with a squared bow. It will likely have bench seats and an outboard motor. These are ideal for fishing or travelling upriver.

A Jon boat is inexpensive compared to most other boats. They take little skill to launch or operate and can be easily stored as well.

Pontoon Boat

Pontoon boats come in a great range of styles. Old school pontoon boats were very bare bones. A flat surface with some seats floated on pontoons. Modern pontoon boats are more luxurious and complex. Pontoon boat size can range from small to incredibly large.

Pontoon boats are some of the most versatile vessels on the water. You can take one out for a day cruise or fishing. They’re great for watersports and fishing as well. There are even performance pontoon boats that feature powerful engines. Whatever you need a boat for, chances are there’s a pontoon boat to handle it.

A bass boat is technically just a fishing boat. That said, it’s also on the small end of the scale. Bass are by no means large fish so they don’t need a large boat. You wouldn’t pull in a marlin on a bass boat by any means. But for small fish these are ideal.

Dinghies are typically some of the smallest boats on the water. It would be rare to see anything that qualifies as a dinghy over 10 feet. That said, you can still get a dinghy powered by a sail or a motor.

Usually the purpose of a dinghy is transport. You can use it as an emergency lifeboat. You can also use it to get from shore to a larger boat. Kids will have fun with a dinghy but it’s not used for serious boating otherwise.

Fishing Boats

Fishing boat is a very broad term. There are aluminum fishing boats . There are bass boats. There are even massive trawlers . Technically, any boat on which you go fishing is now a fishing boat.

Aluminum fishing boats are a popular choice. They are lightweight and relatively inexpensive compared to some vessels. They offer lots of deck space and amenities to make your fishing trip easier. These can easily be used for a fun trip out on the water as well.

Older fishing boats may be very basic. Sometimes little more than a large canoe. Modern fishing boats have many amenities. There is room for storage, gear, GPS , and much more.

Jet boats are designed for speed. When they first appeared they were small and little more than novelty items. Something for people who wanted an adrenaline rush. These days there are more diverse jet boats . They are larger and can accommodate more people. 21-foot and 24-foot jet boat runabouts are very popular.

Jet boats have smaller profiles than similar stern drive models. They also weigh less. Combined with agility, these are just more fun for some boaters. Navigation along most waterways is fast and easy in a jet boat.

Cabin Cruiser

Many people consider a cabin cruiser small yachts. Yacht can definitely be larger but a cabin cruiser can still be a decent size. As the name suggests, it has a cabin. You can take shelter in here. There may be accommodations for sleeping or cooking. Cabin cruisers can range from around 25 feet up to 45 feet.

A cabin cruiser is actually a style of vessel. A yacht is a classification. So technically a vessel can be a yacht and a cabin cruiser. But in layman’s terms, a cabin cruiser is small.

These boats are best suited for family outings. They have more space and more amenities.

Boating Safety on a Small Boat

The smaller the boat the more careful you need to be when moving around. A large yacht is much more well balanced than a skiff. If you’re trying to reel in a fish, you can unbalance the boat.

Small boats need to be more cautious on rough waters and in storms. While a larger boat may handle some chop, it could capsize a smaller vessel. If you know the weather is bad, you should avoid heading out in a small boat.

Gear storage can be a problem on smaller boats. And that’s not just because you have less gear with you. You will have less room to safely store things. Clutter on a boat can be dangerous. Anything on the deck of your small boat could be a tripping risk.

Some small boats make use of their bow space for storage, but not all. Always pack safely and appropriately.

Personal safety is a bigger concern on small boats. This is especially true in kayaks, canoes, dinghies and so on. If you are alone on your small boat, you are at greater risk. Without someone else to help you, emergencies are your responsibility. This means you need to have a life jacket at all times. And you need to minimize risk, just in case.

What You Need on Your Small Boat

If you have a big 79 foot yacht, you have a lot of room. You’ll be able to safely and easily pack all kinds of gear. If you’re in a 12 foot canoe, things are different. You need to know what is essential in terms of gear for your type of boat.

When you are in a small boat, especially alone, there are some items you need to ensure you have. Packing a kit for any outing on the water is a good idea. Have these essentials at the ready.

• A personal flotation device. A life jacket is your best bet on a small vessel. Every person on board should always have a PFD. On a small craft you should make sure you are wearing it at all times. When you’re alone, you may not have time to react in a disaster.
• A whistle. Larger boats use flags and lights as signals, as well as sounds. You don’t have the room for all that on a small boat. Have a maritime whistle handy. One that works in water. That way, in an emergency, you can alert any others in the water or on shore that you need aid.
• A flashlight. This can be very helpful if the water turns bad. Or if you get stuck on the water later than you intended. An LED flashlight has a bright beam and uses little battery power. You can signal to other boaters or the shore. The SOS signal is easy to perform with a flashlight.
• Oars. It’s good to have a pair of oars handy on a small vessel. This is true even if you have sails or an outboard. If there’s no wind for sails or power in the motor, oars always work. You should be able to secure them with oar locks.
• A bailing bucket. If you start taking on water, you’ll need to bail as you try to make your way to shore. The smaller the boat the faster it will sink. A good bailing bucket can give you precious minutes. Some buckets are foldable to take up little room when not needed.
• A blanket. This is always a good idea since temperatures can shift rapidly on the water. If your clothes get wet, a dry blanket can help retain body heat.
• Scissors to cut bandages, tape, or clothing if need be
• Elastic bandages for wounds
• Triangle bandages for arm or shoulder injuries
• Adhesive bandages for smaller cuts and wounds
• Butterfly bandages for more serious cuts
• Adhesive pads to cover wounds
• Rolled gauze to wrap wounds and adhesive pads
• Safety pins to secure bandages
• Fabric tape to hold bandages
• Saline solution to flush wounds
• Gloves to prevent contact with open wounds
• A splint to immobilize breaks
• Foil blanket for keep injured passengers warm
• Alcohol wipes for cleaning hands and wounds
• Common medications like Tylenol or Ibuprofen as well as Dramamine.
• Rope. It’s good to have at least two lengths of rope on your boat. This allows you to tie up your boat or offer help if someone goes overboard.
• Something shiny. A small makeup mirror or other highly reflective surface. In bright sunlight, this is ideal for signaling.
• Rain ponchos or, in a pinch, garbage bags. These can keep you dry and work as makeshift tents in a storm.
• An emergency contact. Always make sure someone knows that you are out on a boat. They should know where you are going and where you left from. Also what time you are expected to return. This is all part of a basic float plan. In the event of an emergency, this information can be vital. Rescuers will track you down much faster if they know where to look.

The rules of the road are something any boater in a small boat needs to remember. Always give larger boats a wide berth. Do your best to be seen and heard in an emergency. Make sure you’re being as safe as you can. Boats are meant to be relaxing and fun. If it’s too stressful, then something is wrong.

You can do almost as much in a small boat as you can in a larger boat. You just need to prepare yourself a little differently. Stay safe and have fun.

Yacht classification definitions

The merchant shipping sector is ruled by safety regulations developed since the beginning of the 20th century, and is familiar with international conventions such as SOLAS, MARPOL and Load Lines. But the application of common safety requirements to pleasure vessels is something relatively new – a continuous work in progress – and is very much dependant on the service and the flag of the yacht.

Defining the problems

Definitions do not help. How often have we read of large yachts, superyachts, megayachts, gigayachts or other bombastic adjectives? How many times have we mentioned MCA, RINA, and Lloyd’s, without having a clear idea of who’s doing what?

A good starting point for understanding the subject is to clarify the main definitions and the roles of the main players:

Large yacht

A large yacht is a pleasure vessel with a load line length equal to or over 24m. Almost all the flag administrations have adopted safety codes dedicated to large yachts and this is, therefore, the only definition having a universal meaning in the international regulatory framework of yachts.

Commercial yacht

A motor or sailing vessel in commercial use (i.e. charter) for sport and pleasure, carrying no cargo and not more than 12 passengers.

Private yacht

A pleasure vessel solely used for the recreational and leisure purpose of its owner and his guests.

Flag administration

The government of the state whose flag the yacht is entitled to fly . This administration sets the safety regulations, manning requirements and fiscal aspects relevant to the yacht registration.

Different flag administrations can inspect the safety aspects of yachts with their own inspectors (see MCA for example) or delegate this activity partially or totally to other recognised bodies such as the classification societies.

The main flag authorities in the yachting industry are: The UK-MCA, Cayman Islands, Isle of Man, Malta, the Marshall Islands, Italy and Luxembourg.

Classification societies

Organisations that establish and apply technical standards in relation to the design, construction and survey of ships.

Classification rules are developed to assess the structural strength and integrity of the essential parts of the hull, the reliability and function of the propulsion, steering systems, power generation and all the other features installed on board which contribute to guarantee the main essential services.

In addition to this ‘third party check’ function, class societies carry out statutory duties on behalf of the major flag administrations in accordance with specific delegation agreements signed with each government.

The main class societies involved in yachting are: American Bureau of Shipping, Bureau Veritas, Det Norske Veritas, Germanischer Lloyd, Lloyd’s Register, and RINA.

Large yachts: Applicable rules and certificates

Private yachts

The mandatory requirements for these boats are very light. For the majority of flag states, a registration survey and a tonnage measurement, carried out by an authorised surveyor, are sufficient.

The only mandatory international conventions are those relevant to the marine environment: MARPOL and the Anti-Fouling System Convention.

The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) is intended to eliminate the intentional pollution and to minimise the accidental pollution of the marine environment caused by harmful substances.

The Anti-Fouling System Convention’s purpose is to eliminate the presence of harmful substances for the marine environment contained in anti-fouling paints applied to ships.

Classification

While classification is not mandatory, building and maintaining a private yacht in class is the only evidence that the boat has been designed, constructed and operated in compliance with appropriate technical standards. It is therefore highly desirable, especially in relation to insurance and re-sale purposes.

Commercial yachts

All flag administrations require commercial yachts to be certified in accordance with a specific large yacht safety code.

The most popular of these safety codes, and the first that was developed, is the MCA Large Commercial Yacht Code (LY2) published in 2004. It replaced the Code of Practice for the Safety of Large Commercial Sailing and Motor Vessels (LY1) published in 1997.

LY2 is applied by the Red Ensign Group Flags (UK, Cayman Islands, Isle of Man, Bermuda, Gibraltar, British Virgin Islands, etc.) and is recognised as a reference standard for all the yachting industry.

Other flags have developed similar codes. Luxembourg, Italy, Marshall Islands, Malta, Belize and The Netherlands are some examples.

While introducing a stricter set of rules and regulations compared to private yachts, commercial registration offers yacht owners the possibility of making a profit from the chartering activity of their boats, and allows them to take advantage of all the other benefits of a commercial operation (in particular VAT exemption on the purchase, sale, bunkering, provisions, dry-docking, and others).

Mandatory certificates

The number and type of the mandatory certificates depends on the size of the vessel; the following is an indicative list:

• International Tonnage Certificate : A measurement of the internal volumes of the yacht expressed in gross tons (GT). This measurement should not be confused with displacement tonnage, which quantifies the weight of a vessel.
• Large Yacht Code Certificate : Covers life-saving appliances, fire protection and means of escape, navigational and signalling equipment, intact and damaged stability, manning and crew accommodation.
• Class Certificate : This mainly deals with the yacht’s hull, machinery, electrical equipment and outfitting.
• International Load Line Certificate : This certifies the weather-tightness of the yacht.
• Safety Radio Certificate : This is applicable if gross tonnage exceeds 300GT This concerns the radio communication and distress installations.
• MARPOL Annex I Certificate : This is applicable if gross tonnage exceeds 400GT This deals with the disposal of oil and bilge water from machinery spaces.
• MARPOL Annex IV Certificate : This is applicable if gross tonnage exceeds 400 or the yacht is certified to carry over 15 persons. This deals with the disposal of sewage from ships.
• MARPOL Annex V : This is applicable to all ships. It covers the disposal of rubbish.
• MARPOL Annex VI : This is applicable if gross tonnage exceeds 400GT as well as to all main and auxiliary engines with a power exceeding 130kW. It concerns the emissions from main and auxiliary engines (NOx and SOx).
• Safety Construction and Safety Equipment : These are additional prescriptions on machinery, electrical parts, life-saving and navigational equipment for yachts with a gross tonnage above 500GT.
• International Safety Management Certificate : This is only applicable to yachts having a gross tonnage greater than 500GT. A certified management company is requested to carry out this service, preparing operational manuals, procedures for drills, and taking care of the maintenance of the yacht and its installations.
• International Ship and Port Security Certificate : This is only applicable to yachts having a gross tonnage greater than 500GT and deals with the anti-piracy certification. A certified management company is requested to provide the ashore assistance and establish on-board procedures and operational manuals.

The GT Factor

The gross tonnage value (GT) is a key issue, not only as a reference for the registration fees applied by the different flag administrations, but also because it determines whether an international convention, rather than a particular safety standard, applies to a yacht.

The table below summarises how the conventions and relevant certificates come into force depending on the gross tonnage of the yacht. In particular, the following values may have a critical impact:

300GT: In many codes, when you reach this value the yacht must be certified in unrestricted service (stricter requirements regarding stability, load line and life-saving appliances).

400GT: This is the threshold for almost all the environmental conventions such as MARPOL and Anti-fouling System.

The tonnage issue could also arise on existing yachts when undertaking major refits or modifications, in that any change to the internal volumes of the boat – such as adding enclosed deckhouses or superstructures, or modifying the hull transom or bow – will modify the tonnage value with the risk of subjecting the yacht to stricter mandatory rules.

From small yachts to superyachts, many luxurious vessels are available for purchase on the market today. Each type of yacht has unique features that set it apart from the other types, so a certain yacht style might suit you better than another. To make sure that you are looking at the right one for you, you will need to know how to distinguish the different types of yachts from each other.

While there is no set definition that specifically sets yachts apart from other vessels, they are generally understood to be larger than average (at least 40 feet long or bigger) with a galley, a head, and cabins with sleeping quarters. Yachts usually have powerful diesel motors that can handle cruising, runs to distant fishing grounds, and watersports. Yachts can also be classified by numerous factors, including size, amenities, and method of propulsion.

Types of Yachts

There are four main categories of yachts: motor yachts, sailing yachts, motor sailers, and cruisers. Let's take a look at each one.

Motor yachts

A motor yacht is propelled with the use of a motor or, more commonly, multiple motors. As the most common type of yacht available today, motor yachts are built for entertainment with spacious social interaction areas and luxurious accommodations. Buyers often choose motor yachts because of their suitability for extended cruising ventures, entertaining large groups of guests, and charter trips.

Sailing yachts

A sailing yacht uses sails as its primary means of propulsion. While these yachts also have motors on board, they’re usually used only when there is not enough wind to propel the craft, when docking, or when operating in heavily trafficked harbors or channels. Sailing yachts are appealing because of the quiet and environmentally friendly way they operate, as well as their essentially unlimited range. Sailing yachts generally have a lower profile and due the the shape of the hull, less onboard space than other types of yachts.

Motor sailers

Motor Sailers are a hybrid between a motor yacht and a sailing yacht. They generally use a motor as the primary form of propulsion, but also have sails that can be used when the weather conditions are right. Though less popular than the other types of yachts there are subcategories of motor sailers such as the gulet (for information see What is a Gulet? Cruiser yachts

Yacht styles that do not quite fit into the previous categories are often called cruiser yachts or express cruisers. These yachts are generally modern looking, with sleek, streamlined hulls and open cockpit areas. They are on the smaller side for yachts, typically no more than 60 or 70 feet long, and are usually powered by twin diesel engines.

Types of Luxury Yachts

A luxury yacht is generally understood to be a yacht that is built with the latest in modern technology and features high-end finishes and materials. The word "luxury" can be used with any type of yacht that is exceptionally well-appointed, but some types of yachts are considered to be more luxurious than others. Let's take a look at what they are.

Classic luxury yachts

Today's classic luxury yachts are designed to emulate the grace and style of the classic yachts of yesteryear while incorporating the latest technology in a non-intrusive way. These yachts tend to have large private cabins with full baths and Jacuzzis, spacious social areas that can accommodate many guests, and lavish accommodations featuring air conditioning, high-speed internet access, and expansive entertainment systems.

Mega luxury yachts

Mega luxury yachts are private yachts that can be hundreds of feet long and are crafted specifically to carry large numbers of family and friends in lush accommodations. They feature vast open areas for sunning and socializing, multi-level entertainment and relaxation options, and VIP staterooms with private en suite heads. Many have additional special features, such as saunas, gymnasiums, and spas.

Types of Small Yachts

Small yachts, also called sport yachts, are vessels that are less than 60 feet long and are designed to accommodate no more than a dozen people at a time. These yachts often have sleek designs and may be used for fishing trips, offshore excursions, and water sports. Like the term "luxury," the word "sport" can be applied to just about any style of yacht, but some types seem to fit the category better than others. Yacht Sizes

You can find yachts in three size categories: yachts, superyachts , and mega yachts. While you can find some variation in how these terms are used, yachts are generally classified as being up to 100 feet long. Superyachts are between 100 feet and 200 feet long. Mega yacht is the term used for any yacht that is more than 200 feet long.

Yacht Categories

Yachts are often categorized by their notable features, with the terms "sport" or "luxury" added to describe their level of opulence. Here are some of the most popular yacht categories.

Catamaran yachts

This type of yacht is often made of fiberglass and has two hulls with an open space in the middle for greater stability and a smoother ride. They are available in both sailing and power varieties.

Flybridge yachts

Flybridge yachts are built with a spacious deck and living space atop the main cabin, called the flying bridge or flybridge. The layout of the flybridge may be open or fully enclosed with climate control. They also typically have a hardtop and a sizable seating and/or lounge area.

Sportfish yachts

Also known as sport fishing yachts , these yachts are built for speed and durability, making them great for fishing trips and sport fishing tournaments. They typically have a large cockpit and ample storage space to accommodate anglers on the water for long periods of time. Sportfish yachts may come equipped with outriggers, fishboxes, fighting chairs, and other fishing features.

Expedition yachts

Inflatable boats come in two basic styles: those that are completely inflatable and those that have a rigid hull surrounded by an inflatable “collar” or ring (usually called a “RIB,” short for rigid inflatable boat). 

Most inflatables are made of materials like Hypalon or PVC fabrics. Their main advantage is the ability to bounce off anything they might hit. Still, RIB versions are also considered seaworthy and used in many commercial and search-and-rescue applications and for recreational purposes.

Aluminum fishing boats come in all shapes and sizes, the only common denominator being that they’re constructed of aluminum. Aluminum boats tend to be light, relatively inexpensive, and fuel-efficient.

Small Pontoon Boats

Although there are some very large and costly pontoon boats on the water, plenty of small models are available that are easy to trailer, easy to afford, and still get you a taste of luxury on the water. The term “Yachts” refers to a pleasure vessel that is at least 30 feet in length and has some type of cabin with some amenities. The biggest luxury yacht is 590 feet (180 meters) and 13,136 gross tons.

What Do We Mean When We Talk About Weight?

There are two types of weight for a boat, dry weight, and wet weight.

Dry weight is the weight of the boat without any fluids in the tanks. Wet weight is the weight of the boat with the fluids in the tanks.

You can also have a loaded weight, which is the wet weight, including any additional toys or equipment you have stored onboard.

What Do We Mean When We Talk About Length?

There are many different ways to calculate a boat’s length. For this reason, you want to make sure that you have a clear idea of what the length of your boat really is.

The boat’s registered length is generally the maximum overall length, which is the length on deck plus any bowsprit or swim deck.  The length of the boat on the waterline is also an important boat characteristic that you should know.

Due to the shape and construction of the hull, these numbers may differ.

For example, if you have a boat that has a 50-foot deck with no bowsprit, your registered length will be 50 feet.

Some boats are measured using “LOA,” otherwise known as length overall.

Why Is Knowing The Weight And Length Important?

The most important reason to know your boat’s weight and length is for when you choose to shop for trailers or even to determine if your vehicle can haul it.

If you try to tow a boat without an accurate representation of the weight or length, you can ruin your vehicle’s engine and even your towing equipment, not to mention have serious safety issues.

Another reason to know about your vessel’s weight is to know how much you can bring for your trip without packing more than the maximum weight allowed.

It is also important to know your weight and how it can affect your boat, especially when it comes to speed.

Different Types of Boats and Their Average Weight and Length

Below are some different types of boats and their average size and weight, and the factors that go into them.

1. Luxury Yacht

Yachts are normally classified as any watercraft that can be used for pleasure or sport and can range from 30 ft to over 100 ft.

While a yacht can be as small as 30 ft. long, a yacht is often considered a cabin cruiser until it is 39 ft. or more, then it is considered a proper yacht.

A yacht would be considered a large yacht once it’s length is over 79 feet. A yacht is considered a superyacht or megayacht if it is over 115 feet long.

Because of the wide variety of sizes, the weight can vary greatly when it comes to yachts, and it is hard to nail down an average.

• These yachts are single-deck yachts with one living quarter below . They are often sleek and sporty.
• Also known as a sedan bridge or sport bridge yacht. This yacht has an area on top of the superstructure that features a view all the way around the vessel.
• This deck up top can offer a control station or even lounge seating, depending on its size.
• Also known as a pilothouse motor yacht, cockpit motor yacht, or sky lounge. This term can be used for any large recreational vessel that is motor powered.
• Usually, this means a multi-deck vessel similar to a flybridge but instead has a large interior deck.
• Often classified as a mega yacht, which is normally any vessel 80 ft. or more. This vessel is exactly what it sounds like.
• It is a yacht with three levels of enclosed living space.
• A sportfishing yacht is any yacht that is geared towards fishing.
• They often have areas designated to storage for rods, bait, tackle, and even areas to store the day’s catch.

2. Sailboats

Large sailboats are yachts propelled by sails and can be found in lakes, rivers, and even out on the ocean.  Today, they almost all have auxiliary power in the form of an engine.

While the weight and length of a sailboat can drastically vary, the average weight of a sailboat is about 8,800 pounds. This weight does not include added gear, equipment, or fluids.

The weight will vary greatly depending on the length of the sailboat. Sailboat lengths can range between 8 feet to 472 feet.

The 472-foot sailboat also carries three masts that tower at over 91 feet each. This can definitely add more weight than the 8-foot vessel.

Speed boats are sleek and built for achieving high levels of speed.

These boats are not made for watersports and should not be confused with ski boats.

A speed boat’s average weight is slightly less than that of a sailboat at roughly 8,000 pounds.

Some of the factors that determine a speed boat’s weight can include their length, engines, and sleekness.

For yacht definition there have been expressed different views. Many continue to disagree and argue their own position on what is a yacht . Nevertheless everyone will certainly agree on one thing. In any case it concerns a “pleasure craft” or else yacht is a “recreational vessel”.

The yacht definition in a phrase is: “any watercraft which features accommodation and used solely for pleasure, be it leisure or races or even a getaway”.

Formerly the yacht definition had narrower content. Nowadays, yacht is any vessel intended for pleasure which can accommodate people. And yet the origin of the word had to do with harsh necessity rather than pleasure. But how was this change? Let’s navigate a while into history!

The term YACHT is originated from the obsolete Dutch word “jaght”, which comes from the Middle Saxon “jacht” meaning hunt or to pursue, which is also the short for jachtschip which means hunting ship / ship for chasing. “Jacht” has Proto-Germanic root just like German “Jäger” which means hunter.

The arrival of King Charles II of England in Rotterdam, May 24 1660

She was a swift lightweight chasing vessel which was used by authorities in the coastal parts of the Low Countries by the Sea to pursue outlaws (1) . During the 17th century has been used by the Dutch as a recreational vessel (2) as well as in informal improvised races both in the Netherlands and in their establishment in North America, which later renamed New York. Such a vessel was used in 1660 for the transfer of the Merry Monarch (Charles II) from Scheveningen of The Hague, United Netherlands in Dover, England following the resolution of the English Parliament to proclaim him king and invite him to return.

Until fairly recently yachts were considered as large and luxurious vessels for the personal use and entertainment of important and wealthy persons. The starting point of this perception is claimed to be that by selecting an important person as Charles II the particular vessel for the carriage of, in connection with such an important purpose as the resumption of his crown, remained in the English perception of that era and therefore into the language, that this foreign watercraft is a vessel for important people. In a public speech, Charles praised the “jaght” which was given to him as a gift at Breda during his exile (3) . Charles and his brother the Duke of York James II, built similar vessels. Particularly two of them competed for prize at the Thames. In deed it was from this royal family that sailing for pleasure was spread between the nobility and the wealthy in England.

Cleopatra’s Barge

Dutch and English carried on this luxurious pleasure to America. There in Massachusetts, later on in 1816 the recreational vessel Cleopatra’s Barge was built. With this yacht the matter of opulence and luxury ascended to another level. Out of this level the standards for construction of yachts in the coming years were set.

As regards to the shipbuilding type, pleasure vessels did not remain on the lines of the Dutch craft. As early as the starting point of the new lifestyle they followed other known lines of the era as well such as schooners, brigantines and cutters.

From the mid-19th century onwards, transition happens from sail-powered to steam-powered vessels and from the use of wood to the use metal in the construction. In this way we saw the considerable flourishing of a new form of holidays and tourism with chartered yachts.

Yachting today is affordable for everyone, especially aboard a yacht rental.

Consequently yacht definition widened from the narrow confines of the large and luxurious pleasure vessel. Now it includes any vessel meant for pleasure which features accommodation. And this is regardless of the primary means of propulsion that can be the sails or the engine of.

So let’s stake out yacht definition: The word emanated from a relatively small and manoeuvrable type of vessel. That vessel was above all very fast because her purpose was to chase other vessels. In the 17th century she was used in competitions where the objective was the speed and the story was the persecution. This and other types were used by important and wealthy persons for pleasure in general. They were built in larger sizes and with great luxury because cost was not an issue for their owners. The more the luxury and the comfort the yachts had the more they were losing their racing character. From the mid-19th century and then small yachts start to appear. These yachts combine the racing character with the recreation prospect providing at least comfortable accommodation if not luxury. By the second half of the 20th century and after the small vessels offering cruising speed and comfort are greatly increased. Nowadays they predominate numerically over the very large and luxurious ones due to the greater acquisition possibilities of by many more people. Well, all these are yachts!

The prevalent element in yacht definition which differentiates her from other vessels, perhaps the unique one, is the kind of use. That is to say, whether used for personal pleasure, something which includes accommodation and at least basic amenities and thence and beyond merely recreational cruise or race. Flagrant example is that following the termination of second World War many individuals bought small warships and turned them into yachts. Therefore a vessel is defined as yacht not just by the design of, but mainly by the way it is used.

Today you don’t need to have high incomes so to enjoy aboard a yacht. No need to buy because you can rent a yacht for a few days and be entertained in any sea of the planet you want. Yachts built for offshore sailing are safe in all sizes. Moreover they provide a wealth of amenities that previously would have been considered a great luxury.

Let’s contemplate that in 1492 Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas onto his flagship that was just 58 feet or 17.7 meters. We easily realize that the board size that once served the necessities of trade, war, and expansion of hinterland through discoveries, today is a common size for navigable pleasure. Today, we can easily enjoy sailing holidays and we can live regally in the terms of once upon, even for a few days.

Conservative MPs have "never worked harder", the chancellor has claimed, following accusations Rishi Sunak is presiding over a "zombie parliament".

The average length of a Commons sitting day has been shorter this parliamentary session than any other in the past 25 years, according to analysis by the Financial Times.

But  Jeremy Hunt  insisted on Friday that constituency work was the most important part of an MP's job, and parliamentarians were working harder than ever in their seats.

Armed forces minister James Heappey has announced he will leave his government post and stand down at the next election.

The MP for the Wells constituency in Somerset decided to leave parliament because of personal reasons, a source close to him told Sky News.

He will continue with his ministerial position until Rishi Sunak wishes him to step back, "likely during the Easter recess", they added.

In a letter to his local Conservative association, posted by Mr Heappey on X, he said: "After much reflection, I am afraid I have taken the painful decision not to stand as a candidate in the forthcoming General Election.

"A great deal has changed in my life over the last few years and I have concluded that now is the time to step away from politics, prioritise my family, and pursue a different career."

He added that he will continue to support Mr Sunak in his ministerial position "until such time as he wishes me to step down, and then from the backbenches".

The announcement comes amid growing disquiet among Conservative MPs and military insiders at a failure by Chancellor Jeremy Hunt to announce new funding for the armed forces in his spring budget.

However, a source close to Mr Heappey said while "of course he thinks there should be more money - it's not why he's resigning".

Labour has staged a stunt in Westminster, urging Rishi Sunak to set a date for the next general election. 

Activists dressed as chickens held signs reading: "Rishi, name the date now".

The prime minister yesterday ruled out a general election on 2 May, following speculation he could choose to go to the polls early (see post at 6.45am). 

Earlier, Labour's deputy national campaign coordinator Ellie Reeves accused the prime minister of "squatting in Downing Street" (see post at 8.19am).

She told Sky News: "People rightly want a general election" after 14 years of Conservative government. 

"What's he running scared of?"

It's an election year - and that means political donations have ramped up.

And this has been compounded by the comments of Frank Hester, who said Labour MP Diane Abbott made him "want to hate all black women", after giving £10m to the Conservatives.

But what exactly are the rules on donations? Do they change for elections? Who gets the most money? Why do people donate? And can parties give funds back?

Rishi Sunak has been urged to identify and sack a minister who told Sky News they were concerned there might be peace in the Middle East in case it damages the Conservatives' electoral prospects.

The SNP demanded the prime minister launch an investigation off the back of the comments, which the party branded "shameful".

Earlier this week, an unnamed Tory minister told  deputy political editor Sam Coates  they were "worried there might be peace in the Middle East" because the conflict in Gaza is perceived to be damaging the Labour Party's relationship with its voters.

The minister made the comments amid a debate in the Tory Party as to when Mr Sunak should call an election after the budget last week failed to excite his backbenchers.

There will most likely be a general election at some point in 2024, but we don't know exactly when. 

Rishi Sunak has said it will not happen on 2 May - when local elections will take place across England. 

The prime minister's "working assumption" is that it will be in the second half of this year, but beyond that we know very little more about the precise timing.

So why is this the case?

Rishi Sunak has ruled out holding a general election on 2 May following speculation the prime minister could choose to go to the polls early.

Mr Sunak previously said it was his "working assumption" that an election would be held in the second half of this year, but he had not previously ruled out a May date - until now.

Asked by ITV whether there would be an election on 2 May - the same day as the local and mayoral ballots - Mr Sunak replied: "There won't be a general election on that day.

"But when there is a general election, what matters is the choice."

Opposition parties have been clamouring for a May election, with Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer accusing the prime minister of "delaying" the inevitable and "hiding from the public".

Sky News has also reported on the private calls of some Tory MPs for Mr Sunak to call an early election to prevent the political and economic situation from deteriorating.

One year ago, Rishi Sunak made five pledges for voters to judge him on.

The prime minister met his pledge to halve inflation by the end of 2023, leaving four pledges outstanding.

However, he is faring less well with his other pledges.

It has been confirmed the UK is now in recession, which means the PM's pledge to grow the economy is not being met.
