Kiboko Tres
The SW105 KIBOKO TRES yacht was commissioned by a passionate and loyal Southern Wind owner who had already built two other yachts with SWS. He was looking for a high-performance yacht for racing in the most renowned superyacht regattas and for cruising comfortably with family and friends.
SW105 Kiboko Tres yacht features wide aft sections and an open transom. Her twin rudder configuration and increased sail area, combined with a fixed keel, provide extra righting moment without any compromise to the interior layout. Kiboko Tres’ full carbon hull, deck and bulkheads make for significant weight saving. She comes in a Raised Saloon configuration which allows natural light to flood into the interior through panoramic windows, hull portlights and a double athwartships companionway.
Nauta Design succeeded in designing a single level deck while keeping the freeboard low. A mainsheet captive winch and recessed traveller system keep the deck clean and elegant. SW105 Kiboko Tres yacht crew cockpit contains all of the sail controls and is separated from the guest cockpit by a wide sunbathing area. Titanium stanchions, cleats and fairleads emphasize the sporty look of this yacht which can count on optimized lazarette storage and a tender garage for a 4.3m tender.
The interior layout features a large saloon above the engine room. The master cabin is forward and three comfortable en-suite guest cabins are amidships to offer privacy and comfort to all guests on board. The crew area aft is an efficient living and working environment for five to six crew. Careful attention was dedicated to the style of the guest cabins, where shelves are built both against the hull and bulkheads, giving an overall impression of natural light and free floating from the cleverly suspended furnishings.

Calling a yacht a “hippo,” even if it’s the cooler-sounding Swahili translation “kiboko,” might not seem like the smartest name for an elegant sailing yacht—unless you recall that hippopotamus is the Greek name for “river horse.” Plus, when they need to be fast and sturdy, a hippo can sprint up to 19 mph and stay underwater for five minutes.

The 105-foot Kiboko Tres , the third Southern Wind superyacht built for the same owner, actually lives up to its name. It’s a sure-footed, steady sailing yacht with high volume and the ability to move quickly under sail.
Kiboko Tres hails from the Southern Wind yard in South Africa and features an interior by Italy’s Nauta Yacht Design and an exterior and running surface by Farr Yacht Design based in Annapolis. That combination of experts adds up to running comfort, internal beauty, and exceptional sailing performance.
The owner was thrilled with the design at the yacht’s launch. “I was looking for a high-performance yacht to race in the superyacht regattas on the world circuit,” he says. “At the same time, I wanted a place to spend precious time with my family and completely disconnect from our daily commitments.”
Kiboko Tres has a wide aft section and open transom, which gives the yacht plentiful exterior space for socializing, along with a twin-rudder configuration and increased sail area for speed and stability under sail. The yacht’s full carbon-fiber hull, deck, and bulkheads make it exceptionally light, giving it excellent speed in light air. A removable racing bowsprit, the “Mini-Maxi Southern Spars” boom, and custom titanium deck hardware add to the yacht’s racing pedigree.
The interior by Nauta includes a large saloon above the engine room, a convertible studio area, and a large forward master stateroom. Three cabins amidships are designed for guest privacy, while the crew cabins at the stern are well-equipped with generous sleeping areas, a galley, and a navigation station for the first mate.
The owner wanted a simple, airy interior. “Furnishings, suspended from the yacht’s structural elements, let us showcase the shape of the yacht and bring out some of the elements of her construction,” says Massimo Gino from Nauta Design. “We lightened and simplified the interior furnishings and left the interior hull sides and bulkheads exposed.”
The designers, working with the owner’s wife, chose oak furniture with light-blue and white upholstery in a traditional Mallorcan style. Kiboko Tres is now on its maiden voyage from Cape Town to Palma de Mallorca, where the yacht will be based.

Kiboko Tres by SWS
As her name suggests, Kiboko Tres is her owner’s third Koboko and, like her predecessors, she was built in South Africa by Southern Wind Shipyard the company whith internatoinal management and shareholders, that has an Italian branch who takes care of the Sales, Marketing and customer care.
This time, however, the owner chose to go all the way to 105’ with Farr Yacht Design supplying the naval architecture and Nauta Design the general concept and interior design for his new beauty. More tellingly, Kiboko Tres is connected to all of the yachts that have left the yard founded in 1991 by the late great Willy Persico by one thing:
“Coherency,” explains Andrea Micheli, who has been with Southern Wind since 2003 and is now its sales director. “Entrepreneurial coherency that focuses on achieving the right balance between performance and comfort, but, most importantly of all, coherency in building to the design brief shared with the future owner. Over the years, we have had to say no to some client requests. It would have been easier to say yes. But on our journey to achieve that perfect balance, which has seen us build 56 boats all of which, including the more race-oriented ones, could tackle a round the world, we have indeed said no. In the end though, both our clients and the market have always agreed that we were correct”.
Despite Micheli’s firm words, the yard could not say no to Kiboko Tres, the second Southern Wind 105. Her owner had started out in 2006 with a Southern Wind 72 with Reichel/Pugh naval architecture and Antonio Minniti interiors before making the upward transition to a Southern Wind 94 in 2011, with naval architecture by Reichel/Pugh and a Nauta Design providing the general concept and design.
This long history meant that Kiboko Tres’ development was always going to be very much a shared process. “Both the owner and captain were familiar with the way we build,” continues Micheli. “We knew his tastes and needs as well as the more technical requirements of his right-hand man. That meant we were able to make targeted choices”.
Massimo Gino of Nauta Design was delighted with the process too: “It was a very pleasant, friendly relationship right from the start. We were involved from the second Kiboko.
The first had the dark teak interiors that were so popular back then but on the second, we worked with the owner to develop more modern interiors based around limed teak. Now with Koboko Tres, we have come all the way to a very white oak that has that grey-ish hue of wood that has been in the sea for a long time. Most of all though, we cut back the amount of wood used in favour of light panels to make the spaces brighter and more comfortable”.
Natural light is actually the real star of the interiors. Kiboko Tres’ main deck is incredibly clean and free of clutter. She has a raised saloon arrangement and her lounge area gets its light from the deckhouse windows, skylights and portholes along the sides. The office-TV area, the three two-berth guest cabins, the master suite forward and the crew quarters aft are all equally bright.
The light also underscores an unusual styling feature adopted by Nauta Design. “It is something we used on Allsmoke, a 90’ custom built by Southern Wind,” says Gino. “Instead of hiding the interior structure and forms of the boat, we emphasised them. And Kiboko Tres’ owner liked the result”.
The furnishings along the walls don’t rest on the ground but float a bit above the floor which itself flows into the sides.
Aside from saving both weight and work, the result creates a feeling of spaciousness and much larger volumes. The shelving running along the walls and the structure of the bed make the master cabin ensure it feels larger too. The decision to use light woods, reveal the hull and lighten the interiors is more than just an aesthetic choice for us, especially on a boat like Kiboko Tres”.
Unlike the first, more cruising-oriented Southern Wind 105, Kiboko Tres is very performance-oriented, thanks to a string of modifications, including a more powerful sail plan to take full advantage of her 5.4-metre fixed keel.
“The aim was to optimise every aspect to make sure Kiboko Tres was a high performance yacht without making everything more complicated,” explains Micheli. “So we kept the usability, fun, contact with the sea and sailing pleasure that you get with smaller craft but combined them with the performance and comfort of a 32m”.
This called for the most advanced yet tried-and-tested technologies for what was an absolutely shared project from start to finish as Micheli confirms: “We are able to optimise plant and develop them to meet the boat’s real requirements.
The hydraulics and the winch package are good examples and both were bespoke-developed for Kiboko Tres. We ensured that the winches got maximum hydraulic power- well above the norm – and Harken created winches with custom gears and ratios to take full advantage of that”.
Of course to deliver results like that takes incredible coherency of both design and construction. So with Kiboko Tres we all joined forces on a 105’ sloop that sails like a smaller craft but is big on performance, comfort and functionality”.

The South African luxury sailing yacht builder Southern Wind has announced the launch and delivery of the second SW105 sailing yacht called KIBOKO TRES , created in collaboration with Nauta Design and Farr Yacht Design . This brand-new SW105#02 high-performance cruiser miniseries vessel sets sails to explore the Mediterranean as her maiden voyage and will be based in Palma De Mallorca .
Sailing yacht KIBOKO TRES
Her name Kiboko Tres derives from the Kenyan Swahili word ‘kibokos’, meaning hippopotamus and, as her name suggests, she is a powerful yacht that can run at speeds of 15 miles. She is the sister ship to the hull number one, SATISFACTION , which was launched earlier this year.
KIBOKO TRES was constructed for a repeat Southern Wind owner, for whom this yacht is the third from SWS. “I was looking for a high-performance yacht to race within the Superyacht regattas on the world circuit, at the same time looking for a place to spend precious time with my large family and completely disconnect from our daily commitments”. Explains the Owner with a huge smile while taking to helm in Cape Town for the first time aboard Kiboko Tres.
Performance, power and speed are the core characteristic of this exciting new vessel. Some of her main features include a wide aft section and an open transom. Her twin rudder configurations increased sail area and the fixed keel, offer additional righting moment without compromising the interior layout.
master suite
She has a Raised Saloon Configuration, allowing for plenty of natural light to penetrate the interiors as well as providing amazing panoramic views while on board.
She was built with a full carbon hull, deck and bulkheads, allowing for great weight saving, while her lightship displacement of 69800kg assists light-air speed.

Cape Town builders Southern Wind turbo-charge their SW94 Kiboko with an all-carbon lightweight shell and go-faster appendages. David Glenn talks to them about early trials
“A capable helmsman will have a smile from ear to ear,” said Andrea Micheli, Commercial Manager at Pegaso Srl & Southern Wind ‘s marketing representative, as he described early sail trials of the company’s new Reichel Pugh-designed 94-footer/29m Kiboko .
Studying the pictures of the yacht sailing with just a staysail and a reefed main, you could see she was revelling in the conditions off Cape Town, where the breeze topped 30 knots, enabling the 52-ton fast cruiser to touch speeds in the high teens. This fully fitted-out superyacht clearly has 20-knot plus potential in surfing conditions.
More experienced With racy appendages and a very short chord keel weighing 18 tons and drawing a substantial 14ft 9in/4.5m, this powerful yacht is designed for “yachtsmen with more experience,” said Micheli. He explained that to get the best out of the yacht she needed really close attention in terms of sail trim and steering.
“Just a few centimetres means she could be over-trimmed – she is very sensitive!” he explained.
Reichel Pugh’s VPP calculations show that in six knots of true breeze Kiboko should be capable of 8.34 knots hard on the wind and in 14 knots of breeze with the wind angle at 140° she will be sailing at 14.34 knots.
With her all-carbon hull, EC6+ carbon rigging, carbon wheel and removable bowsprit, Koboko 2 is a lightweight flyer.
Considering Southern Wind have based their success on the performance bluewater cruiser, designed to cross oceans quickly and comfortably, the new yacht would seem marginally out of kilter with the company’s philosophy. However, like other builders – notably Nautor’s Swan and Oyster – the power of the brand regatta has certainly done no harm to Southern Wind’s sales, and the challenging conditions off Porto Cervo during their last two summer regattas have provided excellent sport. The natural consequence of these events is a more competitive spirit and a demand for faster boats.
The owner of Kiboko is a repeat client, his first yacht from Southern Wind being the only Reichel Pugh-designed SW72 produced. The new SW94 is similar in concept to the Pugh- designed SW78, of which five have been built, including the competitively successful All Smoke and Whisper, ex-Farniente.
More aggressive
From the moment we set eyes on Kiboko in her new Cape Town build hall 18 months ago, we could see Southern Wind wanted to sharpen performance. The yacht’s all-carbon, epoxy resin-infused shell means that the all-up light displacement measures 52 tons, which is exactly 10 tons lighter than the SW100, of which 12 examples have been launched.
Southern Wind have a state of the art manufacturing facility on the outskirts of Cape Town with a mobile oven and three- part mould for the 94’s hull, which enables more effective resin infusion and easier access to the surface of the mould. Hull and deck are designed with five different thicknesses of core foam and precision placement of stiffening material. The outer skin includes Kevlar for impact resistance in vulnerable areas.
The SW94 is relatively narrower in the beam, at 21ft 10in/6.66m, than her predecessors and her appendages are more performance-orientated – “more aggressive,” as Andrea Micheli put it – than any previous Southern Wind design. The rudder stock and quadrant are both built in pre-preg carbon.
“With a very short keel chord length, the SW94 becomes more challenging to sail at slow speeds,” added Micheli.
The pictures show Kiboko sailing with a carbon Vectran Quantum main, but the racing suit will be North 3DL. Southern Spars have recently acquired Nordic Spars, previous spar builder of choice, so the decision to use Southern’s carbon spars and EC6+ carbon rigging was a straightforward one.
The other obvious go-faster feature is a removable bowsprit for setting code and A sails, and to keep the lightweight theme going the headstay furler is a carbon profile.
The likelihood is that once the yacht has completed the 7,000-mile delivery to the Mediterranean on her own bottom, she will take part in the Palma Vela in Mallorca in May, possibly the Maxi Yacht Rolex regatta held in Sardinia in early September and Les Voiles de St Tropez in October.
Nauta Yachts’ input
Like most Southern Wind yachts, Kiboko benefits from Nauta Yacht Design’s overall concept and interior and exterior styling. In the accommodation the owner’s suite is forward with a twin guest cabin just aft and to starboard. There’s further guest accommodation abaft the main saloon before reaching the four-berth crew area, galley, navigation and monitoring station.
With sleeping accommodation for just four in the forward part of the yacht, there’s an unusually large amount of space afforded to the main saloon, plus what Southern Wind refer to as a TV lounge/studio located to port and on the same level as the saloon. The result is a huge open living area, a Nauta Yachts hallmark that works well aboard Southern Wind boats.
The owner of this yacht was keen to have excellent engine and machinery space access and this has been achieved by dedicating a bigger area than normal and providing side access through bulkheads.
An issue with an all-carbon hull and deck shell is acoustic insulation and Southern Wind have worked hard to ensure noise is not a nuisance. What Andrea Micheli referred to as ‘soft bonding’ of the interior furniture to the hull stringers and other landings keeps noise low and other sound-deadening material has been installed around the machinery space.
With her flat run aft and wide after sections, there is more wave ‘slap’ under the transom, according to Micheli, although with the guest accommodation forward this is something the permanent crew will need to live with rather than the owner!
Southern Wind, whose large factory expansion coincided with worldwide recession (see Supersail World, April 2009), have a number of yachts in build, including a second SW94, two 100s/30.5m and a 102/31m which currently has no client.
The Secrets Of The New Southern Wind SW105 Kiboko III Revealed
- -The SW105 project comes from a collaboration between Southern Wind, Nauta Design and Farr Yacht Design
- -The SW105 Kiboko III is now leaving for her maiden voyage heading to Palma de Mallorca (Spain).
Southern Wind announces the delivery of the second in the high-performance cruiser miniseries, the SW105 Kiboko III, sister ship of SW105#01 Satisfaction, launched in January this year. The SW105 project comes from a collaboration between Southern Wind, Nauta Design and Farr Yacht Design and provides an exceptional sailing experience, combined with outstanding stability and comfort.
Performance, first of all
P erformance is at Kiboko Tres’ core: the yacht features wide aft sections and an open transom. Her twin rudder configuration and increased sail area, combined with a fixed keel, provide extra righting moment without any compromise to the interior layout.
“The best balance of performance for cruising and occasional racing was the main consideration in the design brief,” explains Jim Schmicker, Vice President of Farr Yacht Design . “ With no requirement for a specific minimum draft, all of the available keel options (telescopic, fixed or lifting) were considered. A fixed keel with a 4.5m draft was chosen as it achieves excellent performance against handicap, allows for more room in the saloon and permits freer passage through the interior “.
Kiboko Tres’ full carbon hull, deck and bulkheads make for significant weight saving and her lightship displacement of 69800 kg gives her excellent light air speed.
“The proper choice of sail area, displacement and stability is the key to the success of Kiboko”, continues Jim Schmicker. “She will occasionally race, so the amount of sail area was crucial for achieving the best performance, along with a rating that makes her competitive throughout the wind range. Starting with the configuration of the base SW105 with telescopic keel, we added 2% more sail area and 3 tons of weight to the 4.5m fixed keel. This calculation of additional sail area and weight provides 3.5% more stability and a higher sail area/displacement ratio”.
SW105 Kiboko III – The deck
Despite her enviable performance, there is no compromise in the cruising comfort that Kiboko Tres can offer, above and below decks. Nauta Design succeeded in designing a single level deck while keeping the freeboard low, with absolutely no effect on the interior headroom.
A mainsheet captive winch and recessed traveller system keep the deck clean and elegant. The crew cockpit contains all of the sail controls and is separated from the guest cockpit by a wide sunbathing area.
Titanium stanchions, cleats and fairleads emphasize the sporty look of this yacht and thanks to her twin rudder configuration, the yacht can count on optimized lazarette storage and a tender garage for a 4.3m tender.
SW105 Kiboko III – The interiors
Kiboko features a Raised Saloon Configuration which allows natural light to flood into the interior through panoramic windows, hull portlights and a double athwartships companionway that has a sliding glass closure.
The interior layout features a large saloon above the engine room; forward of the saloon there is a spacious convertible studio/TV area that seamlessly separates the main saloon from the owner’s private area. The master cabin is forward and three comfortable en-suite guest cabins are amidships to offer privacy and comfort to all guests on board. The crew area aft is an efficient living and working environment for five to six crew and has three crew cabins, two heads, a fully equipped galley, a crew mess and a nav station.
Nauta Design succeeded in creating the light design of the exterior to be incorporated into the interior, leaving structural bulkheads exposed, which is similar to the design of the SW-RP90 Custom launched in 2017.
“The owner wanted to add some touches from the SW-RP 90 ‘All Smoke’ and to capture the same sensation of lightness that we achieved on this yacht. “Show, don’t hide” was the key to the interior design, where furnishings, suspended from the yacht’s structural elements, let us showcase the true shape of the yacht and bring out some of the elements of her construction. We lightened and simplified the interior furnishings and left the interior hull sides and bulkheads exposed for a result that is beautiful and innovative ”, explains Massimo Gino from Nauta Design , who was responsible for the deck and interior design.
Careful attention was dedicated to the style of the guests’ cabin, where shelves are built both against the hull and bulkheads, giving an overall impression of natural light, and free floating from the cleverly suspended furnishings.

Who owns Moscow Crocus City Hall and claims responsibility for attack?
President Vladimir Putin has not yet made a public statement about the attack.
ISIS claimed responsibility for an assault at a popular concert venue complex near Moscow on Friday.
The attack resulted in at least 40 fatalities and over 100 injuries as attackers raided the venue with firearms and incendiary devices.
The terror group asserted accountability for the assault in a brief statement released by the ISIS-linked news agency Amaq on Telegram on Friday. However, the group did not present any evidence to substantiate their claim.

Crocus City Hall, a prominent establishment under the Crocus Group, is owned by businessman and construction tycoon Aras Agalarov.
Following the attack, Agalarov and his son Emin convened an urgent meeting with security personnel and management at the venue.
The Crocus Group, headed by Agalarov, is renowned as one of Russia’s largest construction firms and has secured government contracts for significant projects, including World Cup stadiums and sections of Moscow’s Central Ring Road.
Aras Agalarov, an Azerbaijani-born billionaire and real estate mogul based in Moscow, gained international attention when he met Donald Trump in 2013 while sponsoring the Miss Universe pageant in Moscow.

Correspondence revealed by Donald Trump Jr. indicates that Agalarov sought to arrange a meeting between members of the Trump campaign and Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya in June 2016.
According to Russia 24 state media, the roof of the venue has partially collapsed due to the attack. The incident occurred just before the music group Picnic was scheduled to perform, as reported by Russia 24.
The band’s manager, speaking to state media, confirmed that the performers were unharmed.
The Russia Prosecutor General’s Office stated, as reported by TASS, that “Unidentified individuals in camouflage attire forcibly entered Crocus City Hall and initiated gunfire prior to the commencement of the concert.

Regional governor Andrey Vorobyov assured that all efforts were being made to rescue individuals.
A SWAT team was dispatched to the location, with over 70 ambulance teams and medical professionals aiding the victims. TASS reported that approximately 100 individuals were evacuated from the premises by firefighters.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with efforts focused on retrieving individuals from the roof, as stated by the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation.
