Accommodations

  • The Kaufman 47 cutter rigged cruiser is a quality built monohull with beautiful lines quite similar to a Swan. Mike Kaufman the designer of this pedigree vessel designed a sleek and fast yacht while still maintaining her comfortable and luxurious accommodations below.Starting forward and aft of the chain locker is the Master Stateroom. V-berth with filler, hatch above for light as well as ventilation and abundant storage with a settee, lockers, drawers and hanging locker to starboard. Her lovely teak joinery surrounds you with ceiling strips lining the hull sides as well as shelving. New linen headliner above and numerous Prisms add to her light interior while her teak gives her warmth. She has a dual access head to port that can be accessed from the Master cabin as well as from the Salon. This is a large head with vanity and toilet separate from the shower stall.
  • Walking aft we now enter the Main salon; here she has a convertible U-shaped dinette to port that can convert into a double berth when needed. Her centerline table with drop leaves is accessible from both the dinette and the settee on starboard. Outboard of the settee and dinette are shelves and lockers. Aft of the settee on starboard is the aft facing navigation station followed by the second head. This head also has dual access from the salon as well as from the starboard aft cabin. Opposite the head to port is the U-shaped Sea galley with updated Corian counters. A private stateroom follows with hanging locker, storage, dressing settee and double quarter berth. An identical third private stateroom is to starboard with hanging locker, storage and small settee but also has private access to the aft head.
  • The interior features beautiful teak joinery and cabinetry throughout as well as teak and holly sole. Some areas may require refinishing of the woodwork but all is solid and only needs cosmetic updating. Numerous hatches and prisms add plenty of light and venitlation as does her updated white headliner. She has 6'4" headroom.

The rugged keel centerboard system houses the board entirely in the lead casting. The board is currently secured in the up position so her keel draws 4'10". The rudder structure was designed to stand by itself, without the skeg in the event the skeg is broken away. The shroud chainplates and bolt pattern spread the load over the chainplate bulkhead, which in turn spreads loads well out aft along the hull skin through two widely spaced bulkheads.Indigo was originally a fresh water boat for much of her life in Wisconsin

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Keel/CB optional. BU=4.83’

Bluewater Sailboat – Kaufman 47

The Bluewater Sailboat Kaufman 49 cutter rig is a well-built monohull with elegant lines reminiscent of a Swan.

It has all of the qualities you’d expect from a high-quality, high-performance monohull. It is provided with all of the amenities of a luxury monohull. The Kaufman is an easy pick with its traditional architecture and plenty of conveniences. A Kaufman sailboat is a wonderful choice whether you’re planning a long-term journey or just want to spend a couple of days in the bay.

Mike Kaufman’s hull design is a hybrid of a Beneteau 456 and a Hylas 49.

Kaufman 47

A Kaufman Bluewater sailboat is an excellent purchase for a sailing lover. The 47′ hull is frequently the ideal size for a family. It has a pronounced fin keel. The rigging and stern rail are both in excellent shape. The keel is strong, and the cabin is roomy. It boasts a lot of storage, a large l-shaped couch, and a roomy rigging system. The Kaufman’s interior features plenty of storage and a comfy Viking-style arrangement.

Performance

The Kaufman 47 is a high-performance bluewater cruiser. She is a real thoroughbred, designed by Kaufman and Ladd and built by Kha Shing. Her moderate underbody is highlighted by a lengthy keel section and a full skeg hanging rudder. She has three spacious private staterooms, two heads (one with a separate shower), a U-shaped Sailboats Galley , and a spacious salon. The teak inside is exquisitely polished.

It is apparently comfortable and speedy for their day and is similarly built to Swan 47. One of the most typical performance cruisers of the day. It’s an excellent go-anywhere offshore cruising boat. On average 150 miles a day through it all are covered.

The low-slung, strong appearance of Kaufman and Ladd designs is often admired. Other examples are the Skye 51 and the Albin Nimbus. The Kaufman 47 is finely balanced, making it easy to sail on autopilot, and it also sails well with just a headsail, giving it an easy way to cross oceans. The hull has taken a beating, including a punch on the chin from a ferocious Italian tornado.

Quick Notes

The Kaufman 49 is the same boat as the Kaufman 48, but with a reverse transom. And there’s no disputing that the S&S Swan 47 influenced the Kaufman 47. They’re difficult to tell apart when they’re side by side. The cockpit, for example, is significantly more comfortable in the Kaufman.

John Kretschmer’s Kaufman 47

John Kretschmaer has logged more than 300,000 offshore sailing miles. Drawing from his vast bluewater experience, he teaches aspiring voyagers and is author of a number of great reads!

“So, I must tell you, and I mean this sincerely, the Hydrovane is simply a game changer for Quetzal. It’s just great and performs better than I expected.”

“Quetzal is a good sailing boat, often topping 9 knots but the HV handles her very well. It steers like a human, lifting a bit in the puffs, easing in header, always finding her way back to the course line.”

“One other feature of the vane that I really appreciate is that it eases the load on the rudder and rudder bearings.”

From: John Kretschmaer Sent: June 25, 2016 To: Will Curry Subject: Re: Hydrovane on Quetzal

So, I must tell you, and I mean this sincerely, the Hydrovane is simply a game changer for Quetzal. It’s just great and performs better than I expected. We’ve now made three passages, St. Martin-Bermuda, Bermuda-Newport, Newport-Bermuda, about 2000 miles, with varying weather, from calms to Force 8/9, and the HV has done almost all the steering.

Quetzal is a good sailing boat, often topping 9 knots but the HV handles her very well. It steers like a human, lifting a bit in the puffs, easing in header, always finding her way back to the course line. And now that I have LED lights, and an efficient fridge, we’re liberated from motoring just to charge the batteries to run the autopilot. The solar array keeps up now.

One other feature of the vane that I really appreciate is that it eases the load on the rudder and rudder bearings. Quetzal was built in 1986 and I just did a big rudder job, rebuilding the rudder and changing the bearings, a big job. But by keeping the wheel locked, the rudder bearings have been loading on these recent passages, which is just fine with me. Also, I don’t feel the need to upgrade the autopilot now, the old one is working fine and not being used very often on passage.

I added a bit of weight, a zinc as you suggested and that took care of most of the humming and vibration. The truth is, now I don’t even notice it, and I don’t really care because the vane does its job so well. In three days my wife Tadji and I are sailing from Bermuda back to Martha’s Vineyard, just the two of us, and knowing that we have the Hydrovane takes a lot of anxiety away.

We took some good pictures, I think, of the vane in action on the last passage and as soon as I receive them, (one of the crew was the best photographer) I will shoot them off to you.

All the best,

The Kaufman 47 was designed as a fast cruiser on the design board of F. Michael Kaufman Associates in Annapolis.  Together with Robert Ladd, the Kaufman/Ladd team designed a number of highly regarded boats; Skye 51, Skye 54, Finya 53 and the CT47/49.  Most of these elegant cruisers were built in the eighties in Taiwan and many at the venerable yard of Kha Shing.

There are a number of these yachts currently cruising the seven seas, as they were some of the fastest, most comfortable and elegant yachts of their day.

Begorrah is in overall good condition and has a number of updates and upgrades.  She is a cutter rig with good sails, and low hour 2006 Westerbeke diesel engine. With her under five foot shoal draft, diesel generator, air conditioning, and microwave, she makes cruising and living aboard a breeze.   Her 2004 updated electronics and good canvas complete the  a  package.

Begorrah has a teak deck which is reported to be original.  Her seven old world style deck prisms have recently been rebedded.  This yacht with a new teak deck would be asking $80,000 or more.  However, the owner has decided to offer her at her current asking price representing a $30,000 credit that would allow a new owner to sail her for a few years, then have the option of replacing with a new teak, or to remove and refinish with a non-skid fiberglass deck surface.

You will be hard pressed to find any other 47 foot performance cruiser offering this level of build quality with Begorrah's amenities at this price.

Call now to arrange your private appointment to see and inspect her in Florida.

Begorrah has been owned by her current owner since 1992.  With 2004 electrical gear upgrades and a 2006 new engine installation there is much that is current and updated on her.  Her sails are in very good conditon and her rig is believed to be sound.

Her interior woodwork and design has detail that you just won't find on the production boats of today.  Attention to detail and craftsmanship are self evident when you come aboard.

Her 7 deck prisms which create a soft light and bright and cheery interior have leaked water in the interior over the past year.  These prisms have recently been rebedded, but there is some work needed with interior woodwork to restore her to her original condition.  Feel free to call to discuss in detail some of the areas that will require attention.

Kaufman 47 cutter, anyone have anything on these boats?

  • Add to quote

I'm currently looking at a Kaufman 47 and was wondering if anyone had any information on them. There is limited knowledge on them on the Internet and from forums. I know they are similar to Swan 47s and has the same shape or appears to me as the Skye 51. We own a marina in New Orleans, and had a Skye 51 up earlier this summer. Very solid boats and nicely designed. But if anyone could shed any info or sailing experience on one that would be much appreciated. -sent from sea via corked bottle

Any takers?

I believe that the Kaufman 47 was designed by Mike Kaufman. Mike is an Annapolis area (actually Severna Park) based naval architect and marine engineer who was formerly a partner in Kaufman and Ladd. People often confuse him with fellow yacht designer Scott Kaufman who is formerly of S&S if I remember right. The confusion is so rampant that even SailBoat Data has most of Mike Kaufman's boats ascribed to Scott Kaufman. In any event, my first suggestion is to contact Mike Kaufman directly and see what light he can shed. I personally have little or no first hand experience with the Kaufman 47. I have seen a CT47 which I believe was a similar design. I believe that the Skye 51 was a Kaufman and Ladd design. There are definite similarlities between these three. This is also a similar design to the K&L Nimbus 42 as well. From everything that I ever heard about the Nimbus and Skye, these were both really nice boats. They were reportedly comfortable and fast for their day, robustly constructed. Looking back from 2013, I personally am not a fan of their rig proportions, but these purposeful adaptaions of IOR 2 hull forms and rigs was leading edge stuff back then. In many ways these designs were very typical of performance cruisers of their era. Their underbody is not all that different than something like a Valiant 40 of a slightly earlier era. (Perhaps Bob Perry might weigh in here since he was having boats built in Taiwan in that era and there were few secrets in the Taiwan yards during that period.) You occasionally see suggestions that these were Swan knock offs, but knowing both Mike Kaufman and Rob Ladd, both are creative designers and it would seem unlikely that they would be directly cribbing anyone. I am sorry that I cannot be more helpful. Respectfully, Jeff

I have been aboard two of the ct47's one cutter one a ketch. These had teak decks the cutter had been removed and the boat gone through. The ketch had not and was is rotting away. If the boat you are looking at had/has teak decks beware. I liked the ketch layout inside but it was a total rebuild project. I couldn't find much info on them either. What's the name of the boat I may have been on it. You can pm me if you wish.

" cribbing"? I don't think so. To their credit Swans pretty much became a generic style. My own Golden Wave 42 built by Cheoy Lee is what I would call a Swan style design. I knew the builders of both the Skye and the CT models. As I recall Mao Ta built the Skye. I could be wrong. Never much liked that guy. He did some funny business with me on a boat that has my name on it but is not my design. I didn't laugh. I have a buddy who owned a CT K&L ketch for many years. He loved that boat. His had a custom lead keel.

Boy: Yep I could be wrong. I pay mariginal attention to other people's design efforts. Unless they are noteworthy. This lead keel was built and installed at the yard. How do I know that? I hung out in Taiwan quite a bit. Truth is I loved it there. I did not bite my fingernails when I was in Taiwan. I pulled into the Ta Chaio yard after a nice lunch and ther was a bit of a commotion going on. It involved the lead keel they were pouring for my buddies boat. It seems the wood mould they had constructed for the lead keel had broken during the pour and lead had spilled out all over the parking lot. Big loss of face for the yard. Face is not a joke with the Chinese. I knew enough to wonder off to the CT65 plug project that I was involved with at the time. I had been around keel pours before. They are challenging.

I didn't get out west looking so I don't know that boat. Unlike Jeff I liked my cutter rigs. Yes can be a bit of a challenge to get a big genny through the slot in light air. It will blow right by in a breeze. When the wind comes up more put the gen away and use the stay sail and full main. More wind start reefing the main. Much easier than changing out head sails. For real light air I put up a drifter on its own rope luff. I will most likely put a stay sail on my ketch.

Bob, I wonder if all of the K47's were lead keeled or if he had his special ordered at the yard? I'll have to look where I saw the iron keel at. I think it was an old Kaufman brochure... Yea, I know the Chinese/Japanese cultures are very deeply rooted in honor/face/respect, to lose those is a very big deal to them in all aspects of life. I can imagine a keel pour is challenging, that is a lot of weight. ctl, alright thanks.. That's what my understanding of a cutter rig was, the ease of reduction of sail without having to actually change a head sail immediately. Jeff, I'd still like to know your thoughts on adding roach to the main would help with its proportion to the head sail? Add roach and a few battens?

Just read over the brochure again.. I'm pretty sure the keel is lead. The centerboard version has lead keel so I imagine the full keel I'm looking at has a lead as well.

I put large roach on my cutter main it work out great. Make sure the sail maker puts the battens in from the luff where the roach hits the stay. I even had one of my stay sails built with battens for added area. My had my ketch main and mizzen built with a lot of roach. I have a pic of the ketch on my profile page.

Oh alright, thanks for the information. I saw the picture, and you do have a bit of roach on both. I see they are both fully battened as well.

There is a new book just out "Sailing A Serious Ocean" by John Kretschmer. His boat is a Kaufman 47, he has been all over the world with it, ( and also a very good author ).

Thanks for the detailed right up, Jeff. An I appreciate the clarification of depowering, I understood it and I think I had the terminology incorrect, but definitely gave me more knowledge. With all this said, would the cutter sail similar to a sloop if the jibstay was removed and only left with the Genoa to tack? Would you lose performance or speed with the absence of the jib? Also, since the genoa is so large, could you not get it cut similar to a sloop jib in order to point higher? I am asking these questions because though I have raced mostly in the last 5 years I am still learning the technical aspects of sailing, which can be a lifetime of information. I appreciate the advice and I am reading as much as I can so please don't think I'm just asking to be spoon fed. With the boat, if I get it, I would probably be cruising it more than racing. And if I raced it it would be long distance rates since the CNC34 I race on we use for can and Lake races. I have been wanting to do Isla Mujeres for some time but the cnc is not up to it. Lazylightning, sent you a pm.. Thought I'd let you know on here because I don't know how the notifications work on here. -sent from sea via corked bottle

I have been looking at that boat, looks great, but needs some work. The instruments look old and the decks need to be finished. Those pathfinders have timing belts, and if they go cause real bad problems. I have not called, but I wonder if that is why it's not running. There is a 85HP marine Pathfinder on eBay for $4,500 that's almost new that looks like a good fit.

John Kretschmer, the sailing writer, sails a 1987 Kaufman 47 and loves it. (He wrote Used Boat Notebook, Flirting with Mermaids, At The Mercy of the Sea, etc.) He has done numerous trans-Atlantics, the Med, the Caribbean and many other trips with the boat. He also has a new book called Sailing a Serious Ocean that talks a lot about his boat. His web site is at yayablues-dot-com.

I tried emailing Mike Kaufman from his website this morning, but haven't gotten anything back yet. I'll give it a few days and may try to ring the office. I just want to possibly get some sail information, maybe get a blueprint or something on the boat. Sent from my HTC6500LVW using Tapatalk

Hey, Any updates or pictures as to how your Kaufman 47 project is coming along.

Yea man! She's looking pretty now, new seacocks, engine is installed, new shaft, new wheel, pedestal should be in the mail soon.. Redid the engine room and lazerette , changed valves on water tanks, refit the fuel tank lids and added mechanical level indicators.. A few other things, closed up some holes on the hull and added one for a transducer.. Cleaned up the deck partner and rebedded the aluminum ring that sits on deck where the mast goes through.. New portlights on the side. Other little things, thanks for asking! Couldn't get her in the water last time I was home and I'm offshore now. But hoping in Dec she'll finally see water after being parched for almost a year! Also, she's renamed now, Redemption, and the lettering was but one a few days after I got back and that's super exciting because it came out great!

the day before you told the to take her off market because u wanted to do some .

That’s not why it didn’t sell. It was waiting for me, Traci, to take her on the next adventure with my sail girl friend Donna. Yes a couple of ladies and we want your Kaufman.

It’s a beast! It will surely do for long term . My agrees. I don’t know how much chain it has or the ? I loved the room. Loved the multi births for crew. Crazy big windless. I’ll try to fit a rig down the line but honestly she is perfect as is.

Hope you don’t poor in her because I’m only able to buy a in my . If you ultimately allow her go.
