The Tampa Yacht & Country Club was founded in 1904 by the leading business and professional men of the city of Tampa. Three clubhouses have occupied this property on Ballast Point. The first building was constructed in 1905 at a cost of $7,000 and it was destroyed by fire on December 14, 1929. The second building was built in 1930 and burned down in December 1938. Our present clubhouse was constructed in 1939 at a cost of $40,000.

The Tampa Yacht & Country Club is an exclusive private club located on Hillsborough Bay. Founded in 1904, the club is a member owned "family-oriented" private club known for fine dining and entertainment . The Tampa Yacht & Country Club is located on the western shore of Hillsborough Bay, immediatly south of the Ballast Point Pier. A heading of 290 degrees from ship channel marker #25 will take you to the marina entrance. Follow the markers north of the north-south breakwall to enter the marina. The Dockmaster monitors channel 68 and is on duty 24 hours, 7 days a week.

This Members Only Yacht Club must be doing something right, I'm told the waiting list to join is 2 years long. The prime rib was the best I've had in Florida. I asked for medium rare and the meat was pink all the way through. Steak was thick and juicy. Forgot to take a picture. Service was impeccable.
Service was a 10/10. They were very professional and accommodating. The staff were attentive and helpful. The drinks were excellent. The food was fresh and light. So many areas to relax and enjoy yourself. A great experience.
Total garbage. Rude wait staff and every patron tries to sell me insurance. How unprofessional.
After being a member of years and having a large event there last year I have really rather enjoyed being a part of this particular Country Club. Even thought I believe to be one of the youngest members the other patrons have always been warm and excellent to introduce and converse with. The facilities include a gym, pool, horse stables, tennis, restaurant and optional dining areas for different dress codes. The gym is limited in their equipment but it seems to be doing the job. Treadmills and free weights and the occasional classes are always available. The staff at the gym are beyond wonderful. The tennis courts surrounding the inside gym are always full of matches and since I live across the street I can hear the tennis balls from sun up to sun down. The pool area is beautifully maintained and offers a snacks and adult beverages at the window of the main building. I must admit, the pool is where you'll find me mostly. Can't beat a heated pool this size. The restaurant is immaculate and always bustling. The food needs a little tending too, it always seems to have "Yacht Club Sauce," on everything so dubbed by what we call it. It all starts tasting the same but the specials are usually something you can't go wrong with. I highly recommend joining. At the moment they are offering fee options over a year or so that appeal to a younger audience on a tighter budget instead of an all at once fee.

Been to many weddings and events here over the years. (My own wedding reception was here 20 years ago!) beautiful venue for special events and the food is always delicious. It is a private club so you have to know a member to go here or hold an event here. Great service as well!

All events take place on July 4 unless otherwise stated.
Citrus County
- Patriotic Evening July 3, 3 p.m. | Liberty Park The city of Inverness will be hosting its annual fireworks show over Lake Henderson. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs during the viewing. There will be live music, vendors and plenty of family-friendly activities.
- 4 th of July Celebration 5 p.m. | Kings Bay Park Join the city of Crystal River for a 4th of July celebration. Enjoy live music, food trucks, vendors, games, kids' activities and a fireworks show over Kings Bay.
Hernando County
- 4 th of July Heroes Boat Parade 11:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. | Hernando Beach Yacht Club The 3rd annual Heroes Boat Parade is a community celebration that honors veterans and raises funds for the Florida Veterans Foundation . There will be a silent auction as well as live music.
- Hernando County Fairgrounds Stars and Cars Demo Derby and Fireworks 4 p.m. | Hernando County Fairgrounds Get ready for a day of family fun activities, including a demolition derby and a firework show. There is no admission fee to enjoy the activities and see the fireworks, but a separate ticket must be purchased to see the derby.
- American Legion Post 155 Escape the Fireworks 6 p.m. – 12 p.m. | American Legion Post 155 Celebrate the country's birthday without the booms and flashes of the fireworks. This event is designed for veterans with PTSD, but all are welcome to enjoy an evening of fun and food.
Hillsborough County
- Boom by the Bay 4 p.m. | Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park The city of Tampa’s annual 4 th of July celebration will feature a free concert, pickleball tournament, food trucks and fireworks.
- July 4 Boat Parade 4 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. | Sparkman Wharf Boats will be decorated in red, white and blue and compete for the most patriotic boat. There will also be a water ski show and fireworks.
- 4 th of July Celebration June 30 – July 4 | Busch Gardens Tampa Bay Enjoy five days of Independence Day festivities at Busch Gardens, featuring complimentary beer samples, live performances and a fireworks show choreographed with an arrangement of music and lights.
- Catch the Spirit & Celebrate America: July 4 th Festival 1 p.m. – 9 p.m. | Hillsborough County Fairgrounds Get ready for an day filled with food, contests and live entertainment, culminating in a patriotic drone show after sunset. Admission to the event is free with a $10 parking fee per vehicle.
Manatee County
- 4th of July Fireworks & Independence Day Buffet 7 p.m. | PIER 22 Enjoy an Independence Day buffet while viewing fireworks at this waterside terrace. Table reservations and tickets are required for access to the pier.
- 4 th of July Fireworks on the Manatee River 9:30 p.m. – 10 p.m. | Manatee River View a 4th of July fireworks display over the Manatee River. Guests can enjoy sights from both the Palmetto and Bradenton sides of the river.
- Palmetto Fourth Fest 5 p.m. | Riverside Park The celebration includes live music, food and family fun all evening long. The fireworks show will start at Green Bridge Pier.
- Bradenton Alive Independence Day Celebration 3 p.m. – 9 p.m.| Bradenton Riverwalk Pavilion The city of Bradenton is hosting its own 4 th of July celebrations featuring live music, food vendors and a Jeep meet at Bradenton Riverwalk.
Pasco County
- Family Fun: 4 th of July Celebration 2 p.m. – 6 p.m. | KRATE at the Grove Enjoy a variety of games and live music from the Highway 41 Band.
- Star Spangled Skate 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. | AdventHealth Center Ice Pricing is $17.76 per person with skates included.
- 4 th of July 4 p.m. | The Commons at Trinity This event will feature food trucks, a farmers’ market live music from local bands and fireworks.
Pinellas County
- The Fourth 4 p.m. – 10 p.m. | St. Pete Pier The city of St. Petersburg’s annual fireworks show returns with live performances, vendors, food trucks and a family fun zone. Fireworks will be visible from the entire downtown waterfront.
- Clearwater Celebrates America 2024 5 p.m. – 11 p.m. | Coachman Park There will be a free, patriotic performance at The BayCare Sound. No tickets are needed and seating is first-come, first served. Guests can also enjoy local vendors, food trucks, family friendly activities and live music.
- Fireworks Over the Gulf 9 p.m. | Treasure Island Beach Celebrate America by watching fireworks light up the sky over Treasure Island Beach. The best viewing areas will be near the Gulf Front Park area of the beach located at 10400 Gulf Blvd. Bring a beach chair or towel and enjoy the show.
- 4 th of July Parade & Celebration 9 a.m. | Old Time Pottery Join Kenneth City Mayor Megan Zemaitis and Healing Pinellas for a day of food, live music, vendors and more. The parade starts at 66th Street North and 46th Avenue North, then through downtown to Ernst Park, located at 46th Avenue North and 58th Street North.
- 4th of July Picnic in Craig Park 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. | Craig Park Bring the family to enjoy live music, a water slide, paddle boarding, inflatables, lawn games and free hot dogs. Stay later for the firework show after sunset.
- The City of Gulfport's 4th of July Celebration 8 a.m. - 9:30 p.m. | Downtown Waterfront District The day will start with the Gulfport Marina’s Fishing Derby at the Michael J. Yakes Recreation Complex from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. There will also be a free sand sculputure contest from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. on Gulfport's Municipal Beach . The Independence Day Parade starts at 6 p.m. with a fireworks show at Williams Pier at 9 p.m.
Polk County
- Red, White & Kaboom! July 3, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. | Lake Mirror – Frances Langford Promenade Live performers will entertain the crowd before a fireworks display launches at 9 p.m. Officials ask for guests to bring canned food items to donate to those in need. All non-perishable items benefit Volunteers in Service to the Elderly (VISTE) .
- Rockin’ Freedom Fest July 3, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. | Martin Luther King Jr. Park This celebration includes food, a water ski show, and fireworks. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.
- Legoland’s Red, White & Boom 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. | Legoland Florida Get in the patriotic spirit with special activities, a DJ dance party, and a firework display with Lego bricks illuminating the sky through special 3D viewing glasses.
- Rockin’ the Ridge 3 p.m. | Lake Wailes Trail The event will feature an assortment of activities, including a glow-in-the-dark foam party, inflatables, food and retail vendors, train rides, live entertainment, face painting, and a firework show.
- Auburndale 4 th of July Fireworks Display 9 p.m. – 10 p.m. | Lake Ariana Bring the family out to view a fireworks display across Lake Ariana.

‘Sounds of freedom’ are always on time in South Tampa

TAMPA — The dogs kept racing over the grass, but their owners froze when the music started.
Renny Braga held a sweaty baseball cap over his heart and faced MacDill Air Force Base, just beyond the fence of Gadsden Park dog park.
“It’s a reminder of where we are,” Braga said when the instrumental “The Star-Spangled Banner” finished playing. “Personally, I stand. I don’t say anything if other people don’t stand, because to each their own, but I stand.”
“I feel very patriotic when I hear it,” said Beth Bryan, whose dog played nearby. “And if you’re a person who partakes in cocktails, you know it’s 5 o’clock.”
For decades, as Tampa has swelled with new residents and old landmarks faded away, the eye-opening sounds of bugle calls have remained in the air like clockwork.
Weekdays at 6 a.m., the base blasts reveille to signal the start of duty. The day ends at 5 p.m. with retreat and the national anthem. At 10 p.m., the somber sound of taps floats over the neighborhoods south of Gandy Boulevard, from Port Tampa to Sun Bay South, honoring service members’ ultimate sacrifice.
How far north the music reaches depends on how the wind blows, and, some say, the clouds. The sound travels nearly 2 miles on a good day.
Robin Nigh usually hears the tinny-sounding bugle on her early-morning walks in Ballast Point. After 25 years, she thinks of it as part of the sunrise.
“It’s like an old friend,” Nigh said. “You can count on it. As I get older, there’s a real comfort in that consistency.”
When the anthem plays on base, everyone halts. Even the cars stop. Across South Tampa, civilians within earshot of the base’s 13 speakers stop moving, too.
Not everyone freezes, of course, but games of tennis and pickleball have paused at the Tampa Yacht & Country Club, and generations of Robinson High School athletes and Interbay Little Leaguers can recall pausing practice.
There’s a Navy veteran who often salutes at attention in his front yard along West Shore Boulevard, and a Ballast Point home flying an American and a Georgia Bulldogs flag where a husband and wife mute the TV and sit silently.
For some who’ve moved away it’s the sound of a memory. Adam Webb, now living in Virginia, recalls hearing the bugles in the 1980s, sitting parked at the end of MacDill Avenue with friends watching the planes take off and sharing quarts of beer from “the green store” (another South Tampa institution, officially named Interbay Meat Market).
Some longtime area residents even claim they can’t sleep as well if they don’t hear taps.
The Times spoke with nearly two dozen people who hear the music from their homes. Baby boomers, Gen Xers and millennials, registered Republicans, Democrats and independents all described it as part of the area’s charm.
Asked how it feels to consistently hear the same patriotic music day after day, multiple people said “proud” or “safe.” Others think of the words “sacrifice” and “liberty.” One couple lovingly refers to it as “the sounds of freedom.”

“I don’t mean to sound sappy or anything,” Heather Leseney said, “but it makes you feel American. It makes me think about that more often.”
Others hear it and ponder their proximity to vast military power and potential destruction. Without the bugles, it might be easy to forget you’re living feet from the headquarters of two of the military’s most important commands and potential targets, U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command.
There’s no live bugler with their cheeks puffed out each morning. The music comes from a digital file set to a timer and played through a large console covered in switches and a microphone housed at the base’s Security Forces unit. It’s the same apparatus used to broadcast emergency messages across the base. An Air Force spokesperson said it’s referred to by the highly technical-sounding name “The Giant Voice System.”
For many residents and even their pets the music means routine.
Lianne Monteiro, Port Tampa resident since 1970, said her African grey parrot Buttons heard the music so often he learned to whistle it. Then the bird would holler, “Hey, it’s morning!”
Rachelle Hammill hears the national anthem while working from home and feels relief that her workday is almost over.
Sassy, a long-haired cat, jumps into her owner’s bed upon hearing taps at night. Her owner, Andrea DiChiara, takes it as her cue to go to bed, too.
The music can puzzle newcomers. When Matthew Keefe moved to Port Tampa, he could not fathom why a neighbor seemed to love blasting bugle music from his backyard at the same time every day. He posted about the annoyance in an online neighborhood group and learned it was coming from the base.
He also learned another lesson: Reveal publicly that the music bugs you and face the wrath of appalled, patriotic neighbors. (Keefe stressed that he is fine with the music now that he understands where it’s actually coming from.)
And while the music is a quirk of southernmost South Tampa, it also connects those who hear it to the wider world.
When Barbara Griffith hears “The Star-Spangled Banner” from MacDill, she feels a swell of emotion and memory. Her father served, and she grew up on an Air Force base. She has a son at West Point. But mostly, she said, she thinks about how thousands of service members and their families across the world, maybe some on bases in this same time zone at this same exact moment, are also freezing in place for the anthem, honoring the country they serve.
The thought gives her goosebumps.

The team’s new “Pontooners” alternate identity celebrates the pleasure boats that are common on these bodies of water, vessels designed to keep things slow and easy. Supper Clubbers Beloit Sky Carp (High-A MIA), July 12
Beloit’s long-running Midwest League team, formerly known as the Snappers, changed its name to the Sky Carp prior to the 2021 season. One of the other names in the running was Supper Clubbers, an homage to the old school meat-and-potatoes “supper club” dining establishments that are legion in Wisconsin and throughout the Midwest. The Sky Carp will imagine what could have been when they play as the Supper Clubbers during an evening in which they’ll also offer supper club stalwarts such as relish trays (a pre-meal array of vegetables, crackers and spreads) and old-fashioned cocktails. Bob Gibson bobblehead giveaway Omaha Storm Chasers (Triple-A KC), July 13
A Bob Gibson statue stands in front of the Storm Chasers’ home of Werner Park, and now the team is giving away a Bob Gibson bobblehead. What would motivate a Kansas City Royals affiliate to honor a St. Louis Cardinals legend? It’s simple: Gibson is an Omaha native and, not only that, pitched for the Triple-A Omaha Cardinals from 1957-59. The Storm Chasers will play as the Omaha Rockets on this evening, honoring a Black semi-pro independent team that operated from 1947-49. Satchel Paige once pitched for the Rockets but, then again, he seemed to have pitched just about everywhere. Get tickets »
Italian Beef Winston-Salem Dash (High-A CWS), July 19
The Dash are honoring their parent club, the Chicago White Sox, by playing as the Italian Beef. It is, after all, the Windy City’s most iconic sandwich. The green, white and red jerseys, resembling the colors of the Italian flag, feature an Italian Beef wordmark that resembles the FDA’s beef inspection stamp. Fans can get their fill of these giardiniera-topped sandwiches during the game, but attempting to eat one every inning is ill-advised. Dash GM Brian DeAngelis attempted to do just that during a game in May and failed. As “punishment” for that transgression, he’ll serve as the team’s batboy during this beefiest of baseball evenings. Wednesday at Bernie’s with Terry Kiser appearance St. Paul Saints (Triple-A MIN), July 24
Terry Kiser has accumulated hundreds of acting credits over a career that dates back to the '60s, and yet he’s best remembered for playing a dead man. That unfortunate corpse was Bernie Lomax, the titular character of the 1989 comedy “Weekend at Bernie’s” (there was also, somehow, a sequel). S.O.S.! Some say that stands for “save our stomachs,” while others say it’s an acronym for something more profane.
