The Best Boat Shoes Buying Guide

Boat shoes are perfect for both looking good and being functional when you want to go out for a day on the water, as they provide traction on any slippery surface.

Boat shoes are mostly made of leather or canvas, which are known to repel water and are great for a day out on the sea.

Earlier on, we gave an outline of the best boat shoes that stand out from the bunch, but you may still be in a fix as to which to choose. In the rest of this buying guide, we take a look at some of the important factors we considered, and you should too so that you can zero in on the ideal boat shoes to take along on your next water adventure.

F actors to Consider When Choosing a Boat Shoe

It takes a while to break into boat shoes.

Fitting into a boat shoe is very important since you will likely be wearing them without socks and a great fit is essential for traction and grip. You should go for a snug fit because the longer you wear them, the more they stretch and get loose.

Go for a half size down from your normal size and if you are in between sizes, go with the smaller of the two. The heel should not move around too much to prevent boat shoe-induced blisters. If your feet get sore quickly, look out for additional features such as padding underfoot and a shoe collar.

Make sure to walk around in the shoes while trying them on so there aren’t any spots that would gap open or chafe your feet. To let your boat shoes break in, try wearing them for shorter periods before wearing them for a full day.

Having a shoe that does not fit is bound to ruin your day and that is one thing you would want to avoid when you are out there on a boat.

Boat shoes need to be well made because of the conditions they are subjected to. When you are on a boat, your shoes are always exposed to the harsh conditions of the water.

The best boat shoes should be durable enough for walking and everyday use.

Boat shoes are mostly made of leather, which is a super-strong material. If you take good care of your shoes, they’re bound to last you a very long time.

An important aspect to look for is water- and stain-proof boat shoes.

Also, look out for eyelets; make sure they are rust-proof because of the saltwater; if not, you will end up with a good boat shoe but with rusting eyelets. The durability of a good boat shoe is in the stitching.  Ensure that the stitching is excellent to prevent it from falling apart.

Water resistance

You need to look out for a shoe that is waterproof.

The best boat shoes are meant to have uppers that resist moisture from seeping in or allowing water to enter but also dry quickly.

This can be achieved with boat shoes that have water-resistant leather and mesh sides. Leather resists water and it’s hard for any moisture to come through it. Good boat shoes have leather that is specially treated with an oil coating to enhance its water resistance. For mesh uppers, water comes in easily but dries quickly.

Grip and traction

Boat shoes should offer enough traction and grip so you won’t slip on wet surfaces. To get the best boat shoes with good traction, go for the ones that do not come off. Make sure the heels of your shoes are tight to your ankle and do not slip off. Ideally, boat shoes should have rubber soles so you can have a better grip on wet surfaces.

For the outsole, softer rubber is recommended so they can give the sides of your feet an additional grip. Go for soles that do not leave marks on your boat.

Yes, style is important when getting the best boat shoes but traction and grip should always come first because no one wants to get caught slipping, right?

People Also Asked

Boat shoes should not be worn with socks. There is a good chance that your feet will get wet when you are out in the water and wet socks are a no-no because they make your feet damp and prone to soreness and blisters. Socks also make it easy for your feet to slip in and out of your shoes, so not wearing socks is the safest option.

It depends on the material. Some boat shoes are machine-washable and you can just wash them in the washing machine. For other non-machine-washable shoes, a toothbrush and some warm, soapy water would do the trick. Make sure you dry them properly too so they don’t smell. Also, air out your shoes after every outing.

Boat shoes are the best fit for casual clothes. A polo shirt or button-down shirt with some nice jeans or shorts is the perfect combo.

Cutting to the chase is the OG design that has never looked out of style and definitely never will. In fact, we believe that every man should try on this seaworthy style that has remained so popular for decades because they're just so comfy, you'll want to wear them all the time. The leather, for instance, is meticulously hand-sewn for enhanced durability and graceful aging. As you slip your feet into them, you'll also find yourself reveling in the secure, customized fit provided by the signature 360° lacing system. The tried-and-true outsole with razor-cut wave-sipping also offers unrivaled traction for true seafarers.

What we love most about these OGs is that they now come with an OrthoLite insole to envelop your underfoot in comfort and provide shock absorption to each step. Coupled with the inclusion of an EVA heel cup that adds an extra layer of cushioning, we were even able to travel in these shoes for hours.

A wise word, however: while we found Sperry's boat shoes effortlessly easy to break in, they do tend to stretch ever so slightly with each wear. Therefore, we warn against sizing up here for these.

These boat shoes combine timeless aesthetics with modern features, and we were impressed by both their everyday performance and luxurious feel. Firstly, the smooth and plush linings caress your feet while ensuring a snug fit, and the fully cushioned footbed blessed with OrthoLite® high rebound foam offers unparalleled all-day comfort and flexibility. In our walking test, we found that each step is cushioned and supported by their footbed, ensuring our feet stay fatigue-free.

In addition, the lightweight and durable EVA sole provides optimal traction and stability, making these boat shoes perfect for both on-deck activities and casual outings. All in all, we love how you can confidently navigate various terrains with ease in these while still embracing a timeless summer style.

If you're new to the boat shoe game and don't want to quite commit to Sperry-levels of preppiness, these are a happy medium. We were blown away by how comfortable and athletic they are with the look of a sneaker, but the level of ventilation, structure, and durability you need to hit the beach. The fabric also has both moisture-wicking and odor-reducing properties to keep your feet cool and dry. The brand's proprietary knit feels silky smooth on the skin and is breathable so you'll stay fresh throughout the journey.

Designed for everyday wear, The Tree Skipper's cushioned sole really impressed us with its comfort as well as flexibility that mimics the natural movement of your feet. Style-wise, we love that whether you're running errands or exploring new horizons, these shoes will nicely fit into your wardrobe.

Our Fashion Director says that these are perfect for going in the water and enjoying getting your feet wet, yet protecting against rocks.

In our testing, we were impressed by its strong grip, courtesy of the brand's non-marking outsole with molded Wave-Siping™ tech. The holes placed on the upper and the sides are, you guessed it, perfect for draining the water out as well as for breathability. Fit-wise, we love its snugness due to the dynamic upper, but over time it does get loosened up a bit so we recommend sizing down a half.

And, worried about water getting in? Don't be. These are also water shoes with a drainage system to accelerate water removal—no more soggy shoes slowing you down. The breathable fabric wicks away sweat and moisture as well while being able to withstand light rain or wet conditions.

In our experience of wearing water shoes, we pay extra attention to the outsoles to see if they're actually grippy, and the non-marking rubber here really impressed us with specially crafted treads that enhance grip and stability on slippery surfaces. We love how they feel and look like sneakers but are actually slip-on shoes that are super easy to throw on. Additionally, the footbed is treated with Cleansport NTXTM technology, offering odor control and promoting good foot health.

The upper of these boat shoes is also worth a shoutout. Not only does it exude a classic sophistication to your look, but the breathable fabric linings inside also ensure optimal airflow, keeping your feet cool and comfortable throughout the day.

Boat shoes have been around since the 1930s but only recently underwent a major overhaul. With modern materials, companies have begun to stray away from traditional style “boat shoes” and offer innovative and stylish alternatives. Regardless of what they look like, a good boat shoe—like a good fishing shoe —should keep you from slipping on a wet deck and be breathable enough to wear even on the hottest days. These are the best boat shoes I’ve ever tested, including some of the most comfortable pairs from Columbia, Huk, and Grundens.

  • Best Overall: Grundens Seaknit Boat Shoe
  • Best for Men: Columbia Dorado CVO PFG Shoe
  • Best for Women: Columbia PFG Tamiami Shoe
  • Best for Fishing: Huk Rogue Waves
  • Best Budget: Hey Dude Men’s Wally

How We Picked the Best Boat Shoes

As a fisheries biologist and avid angler, it sometimes seems I’m on boats more than I’m on dry land. Between electrofishing surveys and fishing whenever I can, I’ve come to appreciate a good pair of boat shoes. The best pairs of shoes I’ve tried have all been comfortable to wear with amazing grip. This is especially important on aluminum boats, where any bit of water on the deck can make it super slick. Regardless of what brand of shoe you go with, make sure the soles are designed with traction in mind, and you’ll be much happier with your purchase. I also make sure I know what purpose I plan to use my boat shoes for. If I know they will be underwater at times, I look for shoes designed to dry fast. If I’m fishing through colder days, I prefer a shoe that is fully waterproof to keep me dry and warm. Here are some of the criteria I used to evaluate my selections for the best boat shoes.

  • Durability: What materials go into the shoe and how durable is it?
  • Waterproofness: Is the shoe waterproof or quick-drying?
  • Flexibility: How much flex in the sole is there and how comfortable is it?
  • Support: How much support is in the insole for long days on the water?
  • Available Sizes: Are there a variety of different sizes and options?
  • Sole Design: How does the sole improve traction on wet surfaces?

The Best Boat Shoes: Reviews & Recommendations

Grundens Seaknit Boat Shoe are the best boat shoes overall.

  • Sizes: 8-14
  • Colors: Metal, Anchor, Coastal Blue, Fog, Red Orange
  • Sole Design: Gum Rubber Soles with razor cut siping
  • The most comfortable shoe we tested
  • Offered in a wide range of sizes
  • Soles have great traction
  • Laces aren’t designed for a tight fit

The Grundens Seaknit boat show combines an athletic style sneaker with all the benefits of a boat shoe. The shoe is lightweight and comfortable out of the box, and unlike other boat shoes, they fit true to size. These are offered in a wide range of sizes—up to size 14—which is rare for boat shoes. It is slightly water-resistant in case a rain shower pops up or spray comes over the gunwales. If you do soak your shoes, don’t worry, they dry fast with their light and breathable design. Grundens opted to go for gum rubber soles that are non-marking and beefed them up with razor cut siping. Whether on the water or around town, these are my go-to for just about anything.

Columbia Dorado CVO PFG Shoe are the best boat shoes for men.

  • Sizes: 7-15
  • Colors: Oxford Tan, Black
  • Sole Design: Omni grip sole with razor siping
  • Stylish shoes
  • Water and stain-resistant
  • EVA lower foam for extra cushion
  • Not waterproof

Columbia offers a wide variety of boat shoes, but the Dorado CVO PFG shoe stands out among the others. As part of Columbia’s Performance Fishing Gear line, it is designed with fishing in mind. The soles feature Blood’n Guts technology which repels blood, water, and dirt from staining your shoes. The shoe itself has a stylish design similar to street shoes but built of quick-drying material. In a pinch, you can even wet wade in them, and they’ll be dry by the time you’re back to the car. Like other shoes, we tested the outsole, which has a razor siping design, allowing more surface area contact to improve grip. For a flat shoe, I was very impressed with the insole support. Even after poling a skiff for several days, my feet and back felt surprisingly strong.

Columbia PFG Tamiami Shoe are the best boat shoes for women.

  • Sizes: 5-12
  • Colors: Titanium, Grey Ice, White
  • Great ventilation
  • Stain-resistant
  • Comfortable insoles
  • Not Waterproof

When it comes to finding women-specific shoes, there aren’t many options out there. Luckily, Columbia has introduced several options including the Tamiami shoe designed specifically for women. The shoe features all the options common in Columbia boat shoes including the Omni grip sole, Blood’n Guts stain resistance, and plenty of ventilation. It is offered in several color options tailored towards women anglers and offered in sizes 5-12 with half sizes available. These shoes are designed to get wet and dry fast. The drain ports in the sole help get rid of water quickly and circulate air to dry them in no time. Even barefoot, these shoes are incredibly comfortable and ready for anything on or around the water.

Best for Fishing: Huk Rogue Wave

Huk Rogue Waves are the best boat shoes for fishing.

  • Sizes: 7-14
  • Colors: Grey, Blue, White, Mossy Oak Bottomland
  • Sole Design: GripX Wet Traction
  • 100% Waterproof
  • Extremely comfortable
  • Several color options
  • Can be hot in summer

These are my go-to pair of boat shoes for long days on the water. One of the best and most popular pairs of fishing boots out there, the Huk Rogue Wave boots handle everything I throw at them. This slip-on style deck boot is easy to take on and off while still providing plenty of support. The inside of the boot is lined with a thin neoprene coating that keeps your feet dry and warm when it’s cold. The Rogue Waves keep my feet completely dry on my boat and have great traction even if the deck is wet. They can be submerged without allowing a single drop through. I’ve even used them turkey hunting in a pinch, and they work surprisingly well. The only downside is on hot summer days, they can be a little too warm.

Hey Dude Men’s Wally are the best boat shoes on a budget.

  • Sizes: 8-15
  • Colors: Natural Blue, Steel, Ice grey, Natural white, Slate, and many more
  • Sole Design: Manmade Sole
  • Affordable for boat shoes
  • Plenty of sizes and colors
  • Flexible sole and toe box
  • Soles lose some traction when wet

Traditional style boat shoes have been around for a long time but are notoriously not kind to the wallet. Hey Dude has solved this with the introduction of the Wally boat shoe. They are similar in design to traditional boat shoes; however, they utilize modern materials to make an affordable and comfortable shoe. Traditional boat shoes are made entirely of leather which can be sticky and uncomfortable. To solve this, the shoe features a cloth-lined inside to help keep your feet dry and comfortable in combination with a memory foam insole. The only downside to this shoe is the lack of traction on wet surfaces. It is more designed as a comfort shoe than a working boat shoe and are best for pleasure boaters or casual sailors.

What to Consider When Choosing Boat Shoes

While any shoe can technically be a “boat shoe,” the best boat shoes are made specifically for boating with key features that address water activities. Make sure to consider these factors in order to make the best decision for the open water.

Comfortability

Perhaps the most important part of any shoe is it’s comfortability. This is exceptionally important for boat shoes. They must offer support for your feet all day, especially in rough conditions. But just as important, they need to be breathable to keep your feet dry and comfortable, especially if you wear them without socks. Breathability and comfortablility should be a the forefront of any boat shoe purchase.

Waterproofness

Spend enough time on the water and you will get wet. Boat shoes solve this problem one of two ways: They either are completely waterproof, or they are built to dry fast. Several companies make a fully waterproof shoe and offer hardworking designs that are built to withstand rough seas. These can be worn year-round but sometimes lack breathability during the hottest months. The quick-dry approach has gained popularity with modern fabrics making shoes that look like everyday wear. If they get wet, a series of mesh openings and breathable fabrics typically allow air to pass through and dry shoes within minutes in some cases.

The most important aspect of any boat shoe is sole type. The best soles keep you from slipping around a wet boat. Look for soles that are sticky with good tread or razor cut siping for added stability. In addition, many boat shoes offer models with non-marking soles. People can be quite protective of their white boat so nonmarking soles are always helpful to have.

Q: How much do boat shoes cost?

Boat shoes can vary widely in price depending on design and features. Bigger deck boots that are fully waterproof can run you upwards of $100, while simpler deck shoes are typically much less. If you are looking for a good budget option, Hey Dude makes affordable and comfortable boating shoes. However, for those uncompromising anglers that want performance, the Huk Rogue Wave shoe is my go-to.

Q: Can you wear socks with boat shoes?

Nowadays, you can wear socks with pretty much any boat shoe. Socks can make certain shoes much more comfortable, but several boat shoes may perform best without them. Shoes that are designed to get wet and dry fast work best without socks. Cotton socks will hold moisture for longer and can actually slow down the drying process. Keep this in mind when you choose what kind of boat shoe to go with.

Q: Are boat shoes waterproof?

Depending on the kind of boat shoe you choose it may or may not be waterproof. A good boat shoe is designed to be comfortable, and depending on the style of fishing it’s made for, it can be waterproof or water-resistant. For cold weather anglers that need dry feet, boat shoes are designed to keep water completely out. But if you are a summertime angler or live somewhere warm, boat shoes are designed to be water-resistant and dry fast. This is perfect for when you take a break from fishing and decide to hop in the water by the sand bar.

Q: How do I clean boat shoes?

Cleaning boat shoes depends on the shoe you have. Fabric-based shoes can be put through the washer if they are really dirty, but most shoes can simply be hosed down. Boat shoes designed to be breathable usually are best kept clean with a handwash and air drying. For other rubber-style shoes, some soap, water, and a sponge can go a long way when cleaning.

Best Boat Shoes: Final Thoughts

Boat shoes can make a big difference when you’re on the water. The right shoes are comfortable and supportive, so you can focus on fishing all day. Like any pair of shoes, each will fit differently, so trying them on is a must. Once you find a pair that fit comfortably, take time to look at the features in the shoe. Look for breathability, support, and above all, traction. Any shoe with all three is worthy of time on the water. No matter what shoe you end up going with, remember to buy what feels right to you.

The Best Boat Shoes for Men Are at High Tide

The best boat shoes for men are cresting right now. The preppiest, dadliest, old money-iest lace-up on the market was once niche, then ubiquitous, and then somewhere in between, the preserve of chug-happy undergrads and the type of folks who use “summer” as a verb.

In 2024, the tides have once again turned in the boat shoe's favor . The style's been around for going on a century, but thanks to a welcome dose of street cred, a who's who of cool-guy brands are riding the wave, too—and quietly admitting they might’ve been too quick to toss ‘em back.

Gearing up for a jaunt around the coast on your richest friend’s schooner? Eager to harness the throwback cool of JFK Jr. at his preternaturally chilled-out best ? Just looking for a loafer alternative to wear to that one beachside wedding in August? The boat shoe has washed ashore once more, and every version you should know about is immediately below.

Best Old-School Boat Shoes: Todd Snyder x Sperry Top-Sider Suede Boat Shoes

Todd Snyder

Sperry Top-Sider Suede Boat Shoes

The modern boat shoe first dropped anchor in the ‘30s, when Paul A. Sperry, operating out of the prep epicenter of Connecticut, cut a siping pattern into the bottom of his trusty moccasins. The brand that bears his name still hawks the original version in all its nautical glory, but for our money, Todd Snyder's newfangled spin on the classic Top-Sider is a better bet. Snyder's true-to-history iteration gives the archetypal boat shoe a fresh update via primo materials and a slew of nifty details, including a grippy, non-slip outsole (with a traditional cork insole) and wraparound rawhide laces to keep ‘em firmly attached to your feet even if you’re tossed overboard. Oh, and the whole shebang comes rendered in handsome suede sourced from renowned English tannery Charles F. Stead & Co. If you're looking for a classic-leaning boat shoe that yanks the silhouette firmly into the here and now, look no further.

Best New-School Boat Shoes: J.Crew x Rancourt & Co. Read Boat Shoes

Image may contain: Clothing, Footwear, Shoe, and Sneaker

Rancourt & Co. Read Boat Shoes

If Sperry is the old guard, Rancourt is the new school. The brand is one of a few New England shoemakers that's been around for decades, but its revival in the 2010s under third-generation owner Kyle Rancourt made it more relevant than ever. Its Read boat shoes feature unlined Horween leather, brass eyelets, and non-slip and non-marking deck soles, all finished with a genuine moccasin construction handsewn in the USA. We're not the only ones who dig 'em—the rejuvenated prep evangelists at J.Crew upped the ante on the silhouette with an exclusive leather colorway and mini-lug Vibram soles for extra comfort and durability.

Best Lug Boat Shoes: Timberland Authentic Boat Shoes

Image may contain: Clothing, Footwear, Shoe, and Sneaker

Authentic Boat Shoes

If the slim, non-slip soles typical to other boat shoes read a smidge too prep for you, the first name in highly durable, highly New York boots has you covered. Timberland's beefed-up version is just as grippy as the daintier options, but adds a hefty dollop of foul-weather ruggedness to the recipe for good measure. The brand’s 3-eye silhouette has all the makings of a traditional handsewn boat shoe—premium Horween leather, rawhide lacing system, moc-adjacent construction—plopped on top of a treaded rubber sole that remains a brand signature.

Best Upgrade Boat Shoes: Paraboot Barth Boat Shoes

Image may contain: Clothing, Footwear, Shoe, and Sneaker

Barth Boat Shoes

Much as we love the conventional boat shoe, in the wrong hands, the silhouette has the nagging habit of turning its wearer into a bumbling American tourist. Enter Paraboot's tres French riff on the style, which harnesses the Gallic brand's footwear pedigree to elevate the American classic beyond the realm of frat-guy fare. All of Paraboot’s shoes—including its legendary Michael derby — are built to last, and the Barth is no exception. Come for the the luxe, butter-soft uppers, stay for the sleek rubber outsole with more cushioning than an upmarket SUV.

Best Dressed-Up Boat Shoes: Vinny's Suede Boat Shoes

Image may contain: Clothing, Footwear, Shoe, Suede, and Sneaker

Vinny's

Aztec Suede Boat Shoes

The easiest way to take your boat shoes from skipper to mega-yacht? Buy a pair from Vinny's, the buzzy Danish brand designing hard-bottoms for the post-sneaker generation . The Aztec is still a boat shoe in the most literal sense, but its distinguishing features—hulking lug soles, black suede uppers, metal eyelets—lend it a decidedly dressy tinge. Whether you’re stomping around the back room of a bayside restaurant or clomping across the boardwalk, you won’t feel the stones, sticks, and washed-ashore debris beneath you. In 2024, boat shoes aren't just for boats anymore—all the more reason to wear these with jeans and a heartthrob V-neck on dry land.

Blackstock & Weber

Sperry Authentic Original 2-Eye Boat Shoe

Todd Snyder isn’t the only menswear-favorite American brand pushing the boat shoe agenda: the loafer specialists as Blackstock & Weber are , too—which makes a whole lot of sense. Not only because boat shoes share a certain amount of DNA with their slip-on relatives, but because B&W founder Chris Echevarria just so happens to be Sperry’s newly-appointed creative director, making him a majority leader of the modern-day Prep Party, charged with overseeing the look's resurgence and reinvention. If these lug-sole buffalo leather joints are any indication, Sperry couldn't have picked a better candidate.

Bally boat shoes

Plume Leather Boat Shoes

Neiman Marcus

Ever since Gucci alum Simone Bellotti took the reigns at Bally , the Swiss luxury brand has found itself at the nexus of menswear's return to elegance , a not-so-unlikely position for a sleepy fashion house with a reputation for outfitting the global jet set. Plenty of designers work double-duty as avatars for the labels that employ them, but Bellotti's vision at Bally seems to be an unusually accurate extension of his mojo. When the designer took a bow at his first show in October, his outfit went mildly viral for its encapsulation of laid-back Italian style: faded baseball cap, vintage sweatshirt, pleated chinos, and boat shoes exactly like these. You could do a lot worse than taking your cues from the subtlest menswear whisperer in Milan right now.

Donato Boat Shoes

“I see a brown boat shoe / And I want it painted black / No colors anymore / I want them to turn black," is, sadly, not the chorus of the Stones’ rollicking '60s chart-topper, but it really should be. Because if you dig the look of boat shoes but not their prep-school associations, there's only one color for the job. Thankfully, the vaunted French cobblers at Kleman offer a bang-up riff on the style crafted from inky buffed leather, the type of material you typically encounter on boots, high-end sneakers, and derbies. It offers the exact same summer energy as its cheerier counterparts, just imbued with a little Parisian edge.

Image may contain: Clothing, Footwear, Shoe, Sneaker, and Suede

Kiltie Non-Boat Shoes

If summer isn't the time to let your freak flag why, when is? And freaky Yuketen's boat shoes are, in all the right ways. The cult-loved Japanese brand juices the nautical silhouettes with a litany of flourishes that suit its current high-fashion aspirations: patent yellow embossed leather, kiltie-finish front , contrasting laces, all anchored by a speckled, non-marking outsole. They're absolute madness, and we're absolutely mad for them.

Ranger Camp Moc Toe Super Lug Loafer

Sometimes, Dad knows best —and if you showed up to the next family hang rocking these, he’d probably wonder when you plucked them from his closet. G.H.Bass’ rich brown Ranger Moc delivers exactly what its name promises: a badass, big-soled, camp- and canoe-friendly number courtesy of an all-American heritage brand with decades of experience making ‘em. Why not make your old man proud for a change—and turbo-charge your spring footwear in the process?

Image may contain: Clothing, Footwear, Sandal, and Shoe

Leather Lace-Up Moccasins

Bergdorf Goodman

“When they go low, we go high”—Michelle Obama, of course, but also, we imagine, Miu Miu's chart-topping boat shoe remix. Plenty of other new-age mocs come with what we like to call ‘lift kits’ (read: lug soles), but Ms. Prada's excellent, ballet flat-like version is as streamlined as it gets. Thankfully, its tony Italian origins and certified It shoe status don't make it any more precious than its beefier counterparts—on the contrary, in fact. Thanks to a gently lived-in polish, they look more like Sperrys JFK Jr. might've worn bumming around Hyannis Port (Caroline would've definitely swiped 'em from his closet).

Image may contain: Clothing, Footwear, Shoe, Suede, and Sneaker

Dries Van Noten

Suede Boat Shoes

Dries Van Noten’s boat shoe is a boat shoe in the same way that a Porsche Taycan is a sedan. The Belgian designer's riff on the silhouette ditches the usual V-shaped leather tongue in favor of higher, ankle-cradling suede—like a mock neck for your feet!—and swaps the flat-heeled outsoles for a rugged Vibram lug sole. Besides for that, though, all the key tenets are there, 360-degree lace system and yacht-ready shape very much included. Their designer pedigree (to say nothing of that jaw-dropping luscious suede) means they'll work just well with baggy linen shorts when it’s swamp-ass season as they will with jeans when the leaves change color in the fall.

Boat shoes have always been synonymous with holey, dirty, and stinky for me. My first boat shoes were a pair of mismatched Converse Allstars. After a summer of hard fishing, those shoes could walk on their own. Now, the competition to create the ultimate boat shoe has produced next level footwear that is comfortable and quick-drying; a far cry from holey, dirty and stinky. Check out my picks for the best boat shoes, your feet will thank you.

How I Tested the Best Boat Shoes

I’m lucky to have a perfect boat shoe test course in my backyard. Fishing out of Virginia Beach, I can test deck boots from the fall drum run to winter striper run. Mid-Atlantic heat and humidity put deck shoes through the gauntlet. For the ultimate test of boots, I fish for bluefin tuna in late February. Pounding offshore in my center console or creeping into the backwaters in my kayak present diverse obstacles for boat shoes. But slippery decks and saltwater are only half the course, the best boat shoes also need to look good and wear well on land. From washing up the boat to trips to the garden store and evenings at the dockside cafe, the best boat shoes are at home on land and at sea.

Best Boat Shoes: Reviews & Recommendations

Best overall: columbia castback tc.

Key Features

  • Omni-Grip sole
  • Omni-Max traction
  • Stain-Shield upper
  • Stain resistant
  • Stable foot bed
  • Shock absorption
  • Reduced stability
  • No drain holes

For the past few years I’ve been wearing boat shoes with thick EVA soles. After a long day on the water, my back profits from the foam’s shock absorbing qualities. This summer, I’m wearing Columbia’s new Castback TC with an extra thick EVA foam sole. Foam is great at absorbing energy, but it’s not great at support. To improve support and balance, the Castback uses a molded foot bed and cupped heel bed to secure the foot. The responsive foam is assisted by small domes on the bottom of the shoe that increase flexibility and shock absorption.

The Castback's sole has good grip.

To improve traction, the sole is reinforced with a layer of scalloped and sipped rubber designed to displace water and stick to wet surfaces. Each summer, my boat shoes die a slow death bleached by salt and sun and stained with fish blood. The Castback TC’s stain resistant upper ensures these shoes will last several seasons. My favorite feature, the back of the shoe is designed to fold down turning the sneakers into a pair of slip-ons.

For generations, Alaskan watermen have worn XtraTuf boots to battle the elements. Today, XtraTuf takes their heavy-duty design and materials to lightweight boat shoes. Now, they’re adding ecologically responsible materials to completely modernize the XtraTuf line. The new Sharkbyte 2.0 Eco boat shoes combine XtraTuf’s latest tech and trendy looks for a performance boat shoe that looks cool on land, too.

The slip-on shoes are convenient for wearing around the house or a full day of hard fishing. The Biolite EVA outsole is environmentally friendly and 30-percent lighter than other Sharkbyte models. The upper is made of Repreve Our Ocean material recycled from ocean-bound plastic bottles. To reduce pollution and increase performance, the latest generation of eco-friendly materials hold their own with traditional performance fabrics. The Sharkbyte 2.0 look like a sports shoe with the traction and durability famous at XtraTuf.

  • Perforated footbed
  • Inexpensive
  • Rigid heel for extra support
  • Draw-string laces
  • Soles not non-marking

When a new feature trickles down to products with a lower price tag, I know the trend has really gained traction. That’s the case with the Magellan Outdoors Tidewater boat shoe. The same knit upper and EVA sole found on high-end boat shoes are now available at a more affordable price. I fell in love with the knit upper shoe a couple years ago. The soft, one-piece textile is smooth against the skin and fits snugly for added support. But the material isn’t stain resistant, so my expensive knit shoes were quickly ruined.

The Magellan Outdoors Tidewater sole features large ports for draining.

This summer, I picked up a pair of Magellan Outdoors Tidewater shoes for the dirty work. They are nearly as comfortable as the expensive model and just as durable. The Tidewater shoe is the lightest in my review while still maintaining support and shock absorption. To drain the shoe, the sole has large ports. I can wear the Tidewater on the kayak or the boat. Since the shoe drains water and dries quickly, I also wear the Tidewater when I’m scrubbing the boat after a long day of fishing. Best of all, the Tidewater boat shoe costs less than half the price of similar boat shoes, so I can wear comfortable knit shoes wherever I’m fishing.

Best Ankle Boot: AFTCO Ankle Deck Fishing Boot

  • Neoprene lining
  • Double pull tabs
  • Antimicrobial insole
  • Molded insole
  • Bulky
  • Close-spaced tread captures dirt

From fall through spring, I live in my low-profile deck boots. The short collar offers greater range of movement than tall boots and the full-rubber lower keeps my feet dry. I’m not alone, pro guides and tournament anglers who live with wet feet are wearing ankle boots year round. Foot funk is the biggest problem when wearing rubber boots in the summer. To set themselves ahead of the competition, AFTCO’s deck boots have a breathable, quick-drying insole that keeps the inside dry. In the competitive deck boot race, AFTCOs Ankle Deck Boots won the Best Footwear category at the 2023 ICAST fishing tackle trade show.

The AFTCO's sole is a little too grippy, in that it not only holds onto wet and unstable surfaces, but the grime on top of them, too.

After each trip, I remove the insole to dry and air out the boots. The outside of the boot is reinforced at the heel and toe for extra protection and the molded, antimicrobial footbed provides solid support for hard fishing. My favorite feature is the reinforced, welded, extra large finger loops to pull on the boots and the thick, molded heel kick to easily remove the boots. The tight-packed hexagonal tread pattern is super sticky on a slick deck, but a little difficult to kick off dirt and grit when I get on the boat.

  • Removable insole
  • Neoprene ankle padding
  • Neoprene liner
  • Thermal support
  • Lower collar
  • 100-percent natural rubber upper
  • Only available in one color

Just another deck boot isn’t just another deck boot when it comes from Gill. The quality of Gill’s outerwear and footwear continues with their short deck boot. With a shorter collar than other ankle boots, the Gill Hydro Short Boot provides even more mobility while keeping my feet warm and dry. The 100-percent natural rubber upper is soft and supportive to move with my feet.

I like the large neoprene ankle pads that reduce friction and increase flexibility. The Hydro Short Boot is my choice for winter footwear. The neoprenes liner provides a layer of insulation and support. At the end of the day, I pull out the removable insoles to air out the boots.

We tested the Under Armour Shoreman Deck Boot.

  • Waterproof neoprene booty
  • Certified slip-resistant sole
  • Compression molded midsole
  • Double pull loops
  • Reinforced toe cap
  • Molded heel cup
  • No removable insole

Last summer I wore a pair of Under Armour Micro G boat shoes on almost every fishing trip. From pounding through waves to perching on the bow looking for cobia, the versatile water sneakers offered comfort and support in a lightweight and durable package. This spring, when the water and air temperature are below 70 degrees, I’ll wear the Under Armour Shoreman Deck ankle boot to keep my feet warm and dry without adding weight or restricting movement.

The lightweight Shoreman Deck Boots are formed out of multi-layered polyurethane uppers, a neoprene liner, and ankle pad to improve comfort and increase warmth. I can even wear them without socks. The Shoreman uses a compression molded and charged midsole for springy comfort and performance. The EVA sole absorbs shock while the responsive material flexes and bends with each step.

The Under Armour Shoreman Deck Boots have three different treads.

The sole features an increased surface area and three types of tread for improved traction and ground feel. The cupped heel keeps these slide-on boots from slipping off. My favorite feature is the large pull loops in the front and back of the collar. Sometimes it takes two hands to pull on deck boots. The Shoremans will be available later this year, 2024.

  • Lugged outsole
  • Removable orthopedic sock liner
  • Integrated boot band
  • 100 percent waterproof
  • Reinforced wear points
  • Poured polyurethane midsole

Each winter, I pull on my big boy pants and tall boots for bluefin tuna season on the Outer Banks. Cold temperatures, high winds, rough seas, and giant 800 pound fish call for serious anglers and serious gear. Don’t show up without 130-class rods, 300 pound test monofilament, and the best outerwear available. This year, my bluefin kit will include Grundens’ Crewman Tall Boot.

The angry ocean off the fabled Outer Banks requires a full-size boot. When the boat is backing down on a big bluefin and the deck is awash in sea water, I need a high boot to keep my feet dry. Grunden further keeps water out with an integrated boot band that seals the legs of my Grunden bibs to the top of the boot. The outside of the boot is waterproof rubber with reinforced patches at critical wear points. Inside, the boot has a removable orthopedic sockliner that helps the boot dry and provides padding and support.

The Grunden's Crewman features proprietary Michelin rubber outsoles.

The poured polyurethane midsole further cushions and supports with excellent vibration reduction for all day comfort. The crowning jewel is under the shoe. The lugged outsole is designed by Michelin with proprietary rubber compounds for optimal grip and durability. When I walk onto the boat on a wet, cold, and windy February morning, the reliable performance and comfort of Grunden’s Creman Tall Boot keeps me confident I’ll be ready for battle with the biggest tuna in the world.

Key Features

  • Slip-resistant sole
  • Neoprene and rubber upper
  • Reinforced pull straps
  • Breathable mesh liner
  • Micro channel traction
  • EVA Footbed
  • Not available in half sizes

A lightweight deck boot balances waterproof protection with breathable comfort. To keep feet dry, the Rogue Wave’s rubber outer is reinforced in high-wear areas, but flexible where the boot needs to move. On the inside, a mesh liner allows moisture and heat to leave the boot so feet stay dry from the inside, too. Standing all day on a boat deck is tough on my feet. The Rouge Wave uses an eight-millimeter thick EVA foam molded foot bed for cushioning and support. Boat shoe soles come in many patterns; I like a micro channeled sole to maintain optimal traction on a wet, slimy boat deck. The razor-thin perforations in the sole displaces water while maintaining maximum contact with a slippery surface.

  • TPU reinforced in high-wear areas
  • Quick lace with drawstring
  • Easy on and off
  • Barefoot compatible
  • Slip resistant siped sole
  • Looks funny at the grocery store

When I’m kayak fishing, I spend as much time with my feet in the water as in the kayak. I need a boat shoe that is as good at sticking to slimy rocks as holding onto a slippery boat deck. Simms new Pursuit wet shoe is a hybrid boat shoe and wet-wading boot. The mesh upper and drain ports move water through the shoe so when I lift my feet into the kayak, the water drains out without puddling inside the shoe.

The Pursuit has a grippy outsole.

To improve balance while I’m standing in the kayak, I like a shoe with a thin sole that puts me in contact with the deck. The Pursuit shoes are narrow to fit inside the kayak cockpit with reinforced TPU rubber patches to protect my feet from sharp rocks and shells. The neoprene and mesh upper and molded insole are focused on barefoot comfort. The tread pattern is widely spaced to release mud and dirt before I get into the boat while the razor sipped to maintain traction on wet surfaces.

  • Super sticky rubber
  • Hidden laces
  • Wide toe box
  • Level footbed
  • Soft midsole and outsole for ground feel

A few years ago, I quit wearing wading boots with my waders. When I’m surf fishing or kayak fishing, I prefer a paddling bootie for low-profile and lightweight wading footwear. Unlike heavy wading boots, the booties are light and low profile. They don’t offer as much protection as wading boots, but for sand, mud, and the occasional oyster shell or barnacle, wading boots offer enough protection.

Astral Hiyaks are my pick for wader boots because I can just as easily wear them without waders. Astral worked overtime to develop a shoe with extraordinary ground feel. The thin, pliant sole grips rocks and connects with the boat deck to increase balance and stability. The soft sole also conforms with the ground surface to improve contact and traction. Whether I’m wearing waders or wet wading, I can use the Astral Hiyak for all four seasons.

How to Choose the Best Boat Shoes

The best boat shoes sit in a boat cooler.

Shoe, Boot, or Bootie?

The first decision when choosing the best boat shoes is matching the shoe to the fishing conditions. In the heat of summer, a pair of light, breathable, cushy water sneakers are cool and comfortable with enough protection to keep feet safe. If you spend time wading or kayak fishing, a hybrid bootie with drain holes and mesh upper efficiently transitions from dry land to the water to the boat deck.

For cool weather and tough fishing conditions, a deck boot keeps feet warm and dry. In recent years, ankle boots have become popular for offering protection without increasing weight or reducing mobility. When the conditions get real ugly, nothing beats a pair of full-size, calf-high boots to prevent water from entering and heat escaping.

Water Management

For water shoes and booties, water should exit the shoe quickly without pooling or soaking into the material. Most importantly, to prevent foot fungus, the shoe should dry quickly and completely between fishing trips. I like a shoe with a removable insole to further hasten drying and reduce the formation of stinky and itchy bacteria.

Shock Absorption

At my age, my back is worn out from years of rough seas. I look for a shoe with a cushy midsole that absorbs the thousand shocks passing through my feet on a typical day fishing. The difference between the right and wrong boat shoe is evident at the end of the day. Happy feet are the foundation of a happy angler.

Slip Resistance

Whether I’m perched on the tuna tower of a sportfishing boat or pulling my kayak over slippery rocks and sharp oyster shells, slip resistant soles that push water out and increase surface area keep my feet planted.

Of course price is an important consideration. High performance boat shoes aren’t cheap. Weather resistant, waterproof, slip resistant, shock absorption, antibacterial, and stabilization are a lot of features to pack into a pair of shoes. The good news is high-tech designs and materials are trickling down to lower-priced boat shoes. Now you can get a comfortable and capable pair of boat shoes at a reasonable price. But if you’re serious about hard core fishing, no price is too great for safe and happy feet.

Boat shoes are more than an old pair of sneakers or a funky pair of flip-flops. To understand what shoes are best to wear on a boat, look at the requirements for safety and comfort. Boat shoes have super-sticky soles with traction and channels to move water from underneath the shoe, so more rubber connects with the deck. Since the boat is always rolling and rocking, shock absorption is another important quality. Soft rubber and spongy foam insole and outsole reduce vibration to protect the angler. Finally, boat shoes have to manage moisture. In cold, wet conditions, a pair of rubber boots are the only thing that will keep feet dry. When the weather is warm, I wear boat shoes with breathable, water-repellent uppers and a sole with drain holes. Not only does this keep my feet dry on the water, but it allows the shoes to dry faster between trips. Dry shoes are more comfortable, and they reduce the chance of spawning stinky foot fungus.

After a long day on the water in the wrong shoes, my back is screaming, my legs ache, and my feet stink. Without a doubt, the best boat shoes are worth it. My small boat is always rocking and rolling. I can’t count the times boat shoes saved my feet from sharp objects and blunt force trauma. Boat shoes are necessary to protect my feet from damage. The right boat shoes reduce shock so that I can fish without pain. Taking a couple waves over the side and landing a few fish turns my boat deck into a slimy skating rink. I won’t go fishing without grippy boat shoes to keep my feet on the ground.

The boat shoes in this review range from $30 to $180. The best boat shoes use premium materials and the most advanced construction for a shoe that dries quickly, provides reliable traction and responsive cushioning.

Final Thoughts

The best boat shoes are worth their weight in gold. Not only do boat shoes make fishing more comfortable, it makes the sport more safe. In the past, the best way to have dry and funk-free feet was a pair of flip flops, but they don’t offer protection or support. And don’t get me started on the infamously funky white boots. Today’s best boat shoes use the latest technology and most advanced materials to improve comfort and safety. In the winter I wear high-top boots. In the shoulder seasons, I’m in ankle boots. And in the summer, my feet are cool and dry in the best boat shoes. But you’ll never again catch me in a pair of flip flops.

American inventor Paul A. Sperry introduced the world’s first boating shoe in 1935. Originally doing business as Sperry Top-Sider, the Sperry brand is now synonymous with yachting style and performance.

Although the company’s first shoe sported a canvas upper, Sperry’s Authentic Original 2-Eye boat shoe retains the classic look of the original in water-resistant leather.

This hand-stitched moccasin features leather laces in a slotted collar for a snug fit under the ankle bones.

Rust-resistant eyelets mean years of reliable performance in corrosive environments. The Authentic Original is available for men and women in narrow through extra-wide widths (depending on size and style).

Chatham Aegean Technical Boat Shoe

Best technical boat shoe

Technical apparel is designed with a specific activity in mind. For a boat shoe, that means special attention is paid to traction, fit and performance.

Well-known for its moccasin-style boat shoes, Chatham’s Aegean is more of a hybrid construction, with a sneaker fit specifically designed for active deck work.

Fast-drying leather uppers and drain holes in the bottom of the sole help control moisture, airflow, and temperature.

The proprietary tread is where this shoe has an edge on the competition. In addition to integrated drainage, the Aegean’s Aqua-Go sole is a blend of rubber and latex with pronounced siping under the big toe for added grip.

A foam-filled footbed offers extra cushioning and tactile responsiveness on deck.

• Designed specifically for performance sailing. • Holds up well to saltwater environments. • The rugged build includes a reinforced toe well, tongue pulls, and heavy-duty laces. • A fast-drying shoe that sheds water through drain holes.

• They are expensive. • Leather may stretch up to one-half size after use.

Rugged Shark Pacifico Slip-On

Best slip-on boat shoe

Nothing beats a slip-on for ease of use, and the Rugged Shark Pacifico offers the perfect blend of convenience and performance.

Elastic gussets at the tongue make the Pacifico your go-to footwear for everyday use. But don’t be fooled by the house-slipper comfort, these are tried-and-true boat shoes.

Water-resistant nubuck leather and mesh uppers combine with drain holes through the footbed to shed water.

The sole is a hybrid configuration of a moderately lugged tread and traditional siping along the edges and under critical traction points.

This combination offers all-terrain functionality without compromising grip on deck.

A padded leather collar and cushiony midsole make this a great everyday choice for use at sea, on land, or around the yacht club.

• Good value. • All-terrain traction. • Easy wearing comfort. • Stylish enough for casual occasions.

• Runs narrow in the toe well. • No laces to adjust fit.

Sperry Authentic Original Float

Best multi-purpose boat shoe

An all-synthetic deck shoe is best if you need footwear that can pull double duty in multiple watery environments.

Sperry’s Float boating shoe has the look and functionality of dedicated yachting footwear, with the construction mindset of a general-purpose water shoe.

The wave-siped outsole ensures maximum traction on deck, while the topside portholes and side vents instantly drain water after wading, fishing, or kayaking.

Constructed of one-piece EVA foam uppers, the Float is super lightweight and waterproof. As the name suggests, they even float!

This model is available in a multitude of colours for men and women. But be sure to choose carefully when shopping for this shoe on Amazon; some sizes and colour options appear to have a fleece lining.

• Affordability. • All-around water shoe for activities from sailing to kayaking. • Fully siped outsole for wet-dry traction. • Extreme venting of non-absorbent materials for quick drying.

• No half sizes. • Can run a little large.

What to look for in the best boat shoes

Aside from matters of personal style, there are a few traits to look for in any purpose-built deck shoe. The two most critical characteristics are a non-marking tread and wet-dry traction. Look for a sole fabricated of rubber or other synthetic material specifically labelled as non-marking.

For traction, the outsole should be properly siped. Simply put, this means a pattern of slits cut into the tread to increase surface area and grip.

The ability to shed moisture is also important – synthetic materials dry faster than even the most water-resistant leather, which can lead to odor problems, so consider how often your feet will get wet.

If you only need traction and comfort on deck with the occasional wave washing over the bulwarks then leather is a great choice, especially in a deck shoe intended for casual wear.

But if you plan to do any wading, such as when launching a boat off a trailer, fast-drying synthetics are a better choice.

Fit is another important consideration. Bear in mind that lace-up shoes will be more adjustable than slip-ons.

For ultimate support, opt for a stout leather upper featuring a padded collar and an insole with substantial arch support.

As a general rule, boat shoes tend to run on the narrow side, so if you’re looking for the best boat shoes for wide feet , carefully study the manufacturer’s size chart.

Best Arch Support Boat Shoes: 6 Pain-Free Performers

  • Steve Walburn
  • April 4, 2023

Comfortable and supportive footwear is essential when spending extended periods on the water, especially for those who suffer from foot pain.

boat yacht shoe

The best boat shoes are designed to offer traction on wet surfaces and protect feet from the elements, but what if you also require additional arch support?

As anyone who suffers from plantar fasciitis, heel pain, or flat feet knows, arch support is crucial in their footwear. Proper support distributes body weight evenly and reduces pressure on your feet, which in turn can alleviate pain and discomfort.

Unfortunately, the most traditional style of deck shoes—topsiders—often have the arch support of a flapjack. Their loafer profile and thin sole just don’t allow for a lot of extra padding or support. But as a given shoe design bulks up, better arch support usually follows.

We have selected these six shoes based on unique features that provide maximum arch support and comfort to sailors and boaters. Our list includes both men’s and women’s shoes, with various styles and designs to suit any preference.

Whether you’re out on the water for long periods or just strolling along the dock, these shoes will keep your feet well-supported so you can focus on enjoying your time on the water without worrying about foot pain or discomfort.

The dual-density foam midsole provides extra support in the form of a medial posting, which helps prevent excessive pronation that can lead to rolled ankles.

A removable microfiber insole is treated with antibacterial technology to reduce foot odor and fungi, keeping you comfortable on long passages.

If you took a premium running shoe and crossed it with a super grippy deck shoe, the Skagen F-1 Offshore is what you would get.

The Best Boat Shoes in 2024

Boating Shoes

The footwear in this guide includes a mixed list of maritime products in fashion and function.

boat yacht shoe

We’ve tried to include specific styles of boat shoes that are considered classic with the best brands–Sperry, Polo, etc.–along with the more active functional boat shoes. These deck shoes are all ideal for a type of maritime activity.

Important for the sailor on and off the deck is the ease of getting in and out. That’s the classic loafer-style shoe. As for the more casual and active products, drainage will be important.

Our team of writers are sailors and motor boaters, each with their own requirements. The products here reflect the experience of cruising up to a dockside restaurant with elegant footwear as much as comfortable boat shoes that are ideal for going ashore in unfamiliar harbors.

Where to buy:

Where to buy adidas boat shoe aka terrex climacool:.

From Adidas, an unconventional boat shoe has been making waves. The Terrex Boat S.RDY demonstrates how sailing and boating has become a less elitist hobby. Most boat shoes look like Sperrys, slip-on moccasins with non-marking, rubber soles. Not these.

The Adidas Boat Shoe is also a more sustainably produced water shoe that brings a bit of sport into boating with a spillover into all water sports. In fact, it looks more like beach-walking, kayak-friendly water shoes. But is it a reliable footwear for all water activities or just a non-marking boat shoe with good grip?

We tested these water shoes, putting it through its paces to answer these questions.

It features moccasin construction with OrthoLite insoles for enhanced shock absorption and comfort as well as a shock-absorbing EVA heel cup. There has been some discussion about a new production of Sperry boat shoes, one that relies more on automation than handwork. We’ve found it hard to validate.

Either way, just remember that a Sperry shoe will often stretch a wee bit, so don’t order big.

Men’s and Women’s Boat Shoes | Buyer’s Guide

Now that you’ve gone through our handpicked selection of the best boat shoes on the market, there are a few things you should consider before buying your maritime footwear. What makes these kinds of loafers so iconic is their practical use in and around boating, an experience that has made them favorites for casual lifestyle activities. Read on:

The most common types of materials used for boat shoes are leather, canvas, and synthetic fibers.

  • Leather:  in the leather category, in particular, it is important to highlight the differences between each type:
  • Full-grain leather:  it takes the entire grain of the hide of an animal with all its imperfections. For that reason, it is the strongest and most durable kind of leather you will find.
  • Top-grain leather:  it is the top cut of cowhide with the outermost layer of the skin removed for blemishes. It’s still strong and durable but less than full-grain leather.
  • Genuine leather:  despite the genuine on the name, this is the lowest quality of leather you can get. It’s made with several layers of leftover low-quality leather mixed with glue and painted over for an improved look.
  • Suede:  it’s a type of leather made from the underside of the animal skin, giving it a soft and smooth texture.
  • Nubuck:  this is top-grain cattle leather that has been sanded and left with a velvet-like surface.
  • Canvas:  it’s a plain-woven fabric usually made of cotton or linen. It’s known for being durable, lightweight, breathable, and inexpensive.
  • Synthetic fibers:  they are great for outdoor wear since they can offer much more durability and water-resistance than most natural fibers.

Regarding size, it is important to remember that no shoe will be perfect for everyone. Every manufacturer will have a variation in size—it’s very possible that with one brand a size 11 will fit you perfectly while with another brand a size 12 will be your exact fit.

Also, keep in mind that leather is a material that is made to stretch and warp as you continue to wear your shoes. So be patient, because once they’re broken in, they’re going to feel much more comfortable.

Other useful features:

  • Water Resistance:  Although not waterproof, most boat shoes have been treated with oil or wax in order to repel water. After all, they were initially designed with the maritime setting in mind. Having said that, make sure you dry them properly before putting them away. But do not leave them in the sun to dry or use a blow dryer.
  • Slip Resistance : Eventually, you might walk on wet and slippery surfaces, especially around the docks. So look for rubber outsoles with traction for maximum grip.
  • Breathability:  As you will be wearing your boat shoes primarily through the warm and humid seasons, a pair of well-ventilated deck shoes is paramount. Keep an eye out for any anti-microbial technology or your typical mesh netting that will help air flow freely into the shoe thus preventing your feet from sweating as well as odor buildup.

Boating vs. Water shoes

The main difference between the two is found in the material and features. Water shoes for boating are built to withstand time in water and designed to drain the water out of the shoe. These are features regular boat shoes do not have.

If you want dip your toes in without worrying about wet shoes or soar feet you might want to consider investing in a pair of water shoes before your boat ride.

Now, we want to hear from you.

Frequently asked questions

Ultimately the  Sperry Authentic 2 Eyed Boat Shoes for men  has been consistently placed close to the top loafer market. Joining Sperry is:

  • Timberland Classic 2 Eye Boat Shoe
  • Dockers Vargas Men’s Leather Boat Shoe
  • Sebago Men’s Docksides Boat Shoe
  • Polo Ralph Lauren Men’s Merton Boat Shoe
  • Eastland Men’s Yarmouth Boat Shoes
  • Vionic Lloyd Boat Shoe

This is truly the million-dollar question when it comes to boat shoes.

The truth is, deck shoes were intentionally designed to be worn without socks, but here’s the thing.

When you’re sailing, go without socks. Simply because your feet won’t slip inside the shoes, therefore you’ll have a better grip.

That said, if you have sweaty feet or you’re still in the process of breaking into your boat shoes, go with ankle socks—that way you’ll get the best of both worlds. You’ll feel comfortable and stay true to the original look.

Boat shoes are incredibly versatile. Men can pair them with jeans, shorts, khakis, and chinos while wearing polo shirts, tank tops, short sleeve shirts, and many other combinations.

Women can style them with dresses, denim, jeans, etc.

Hi Jim! First of all, thank you for your question. You’re right, some of these boat shoes do seem to be made more for everyday use but a few models from our list were definitely designed with boating and sailing in mind. Our top 3 recommendation for sailing is the Dockers Men’s Beacon Boat Shoe, the Rockport Men’s Perth Boat Shoes, and the Margaritaville Men’s Anchor Lace Boat Shoe. They are comfortable, offer great grip on wet surfaces, and the last one delivers great breathability.

Jim P.

I need a pair of boat shoes for actual sailing, but I think a lot of these shoes seem like they’re for leisure wear or going to events. What are the best pair of boat shoes for sailing on a small yacht?

The bodies of a thrill-seeking Canadian couple were found in a life raft Wednesday — nearly six weeks after they left on a sailing trip across the Atlantic Ocean, according to a report.

Brett Clibbery, 70, and Sarah Justine Packwood, 54, apparently abandoned their yacht and perished on a life raft before washing up on Sable Island, nicknamed the “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” the Vancouver Sun reported.

Canadian authorities have not officially identified the tragic pair as the victims, but told the outlet that the 10-foot life raft was believed to be from a larger vessel named Theros — the same eco-friendly boat the couple had routinely documented on their travel blog account.

Brett Clibber and Sarah Justine Packwood

Clibbery and Packwood set sail on the 39-foot yacht from Halifax on June 11 with plans to cross the Atlantic to the Azores, a series of islands 900 miles west of Portugal, by July 2.

The pair were documenting their journey on their YouTube channel “Theros Adventures,” which they used to demonstrate how to travel the world via electric-, wind- and solar-powered vessels.

Their trip to the Azores was meant to be the first fully “green” journey on Theros, which the couple dubbed the Green Odyssey after they removed its diesel engine.

They had tried to cross the Atlantic in the boat once before in 2019, but were stopped by a forecast of storms.

On the day of their journey, Clibbery and Packwood shared a video that put them 16 nautical miles off the coast of Nova Scotia with fair winds and calm seas.

The video was their last. They were reported missing one week later.

Sable Island is about 175 miles south of Halifax.

Theros is still missing, the Times Colonist reported.

What went wrong and why the couple abandoned their beloved boat is still a mystery.

The pair got married on the yacht in 2016, one year after they met during a chance encounter at a bus stop in London, England.

Packwood was preparing to donate a kidney to her sister when she met Clibbery, who was visiting from Canada — a heartwarming story that was the center of a 2020 “How We Met” piece in The Guardian.

“We have been traveling and co-creating adventures ever since,” Packwood previously posted on YouTube.

Nautitech Open 40 boat test – this cat will make you purr

  • Matthew Sheahan
  • October 14, 2015

The many qualities of the Nautitech Open 40 make a compelling case for choosing a catamaran over a monohull, says an impressed Matthew Sheahan

nautitech catamaran

Product Overview

Space, stability, performance and even safety, if you’re a monohull sailor you will be familiar with the key points of the arguments that multihull advocates present for having two hulls rather than one. In the main, their evidence is hard to refute.

For the same overall length catamarans do indeed have much more volume, especially below decks. They don’t heel like a monohull, something that regularly gains favour with many sailing families. And as for safety, the lack of a ballast keel makes it very unlikely that they will sink, even if capsized, something that no Nautitech cat has ever done in 20 years, we are told.

But when it comes to performance, the argument is less compelling, depending on which cat we’re talking about. See our feature on the pros and cons of multihulls .

If they’re not laden with cruising kit, or are one of the latest generation of multi-decked superstructures modelled on wedding cakes with a tiny token rig stuck on the top, they can in certain conditions outpace an equivalent length monohull.

Most of the time they’re better when reaching, but struggle to keep pace upwind and, for the sailing-minded buyer, this can be a compromise too far.

But with the Nautitech Open 40 catamaran you have to think again because this is a boat that challenges a number of common preconceptions.

At first glance she doesn’t stand out as anything out of the ordinary. Yet look a little closer and she’s far cleaner, simpler and, as a result, more attractive than many typical production cruising cats.

AY7Q5026

There are, however, a few angles from which she looks dumpy and squared off and in places rather slab-sided. But in the main there are many good points in this new model and you can understand why she was the talk of the winter boat shows this year.

Surprising performance

In my opinion her strongest card is her performance under sail, not in the absolute speeds she achieves, but in the feel on the helm and the ease with which she can be handled.

With twin wheels set in each of the aft quarters you are not only enveloped in the security of a deep cockpit wall on the outer flanks, but have a superb view forward and through the wraparound windows in the coachroof. Indeed, the visibility to leeward is better when sailing upwind than aboard most monohulls with large overlapping headsails.

Both engine and sail controls are close to hand on either side with the additional benefit that the leads for the control lines have been well thought out and have far less friction than you would expect. This is particularly impressive given that most of the lines are led back to the cockpit discreetly and produce very little rope clutter.

This, combined with her well-balanced and light steering, makes her fun and rewarding to sail. During our sailing trials we got caught up in the opening stages of the upwind leg of a race in the Solent. Unable to resist lining up against a fleet of fully crewed monohulls, I was surprised at how well she coped.

T31A1180 copy

What she lacked in pointing ability in the 12-16 knot sea breeze she made up for with a typical upwind pace of 6-7 knots. She only really lost out through the tacks when her size and windage slowed her through the breeze, and her self-tacking blade jib didn’t have the power to see her accelerate like the monohulls – hardly surprising. But for cruising, especially short-handed, she was sufficiently nimble and easy to manhandle.

Off the breeze her furling Code 0, flown off a short bowsprit – one of the factory-fitted options – provided plenty of power and her eagerness to sit at 8-9 knots on a reach was clear. Again, she remained light and easy on the helm.

AY7Q5285

Under engine she’s a very manageable boat, and once again the helming position and the good all round visibility make her simple to manoeuvre in tight spaces. Fitted with the upgrade option of a pair of Yanmar 30hp engines (20hp is standard), along with two three-bladed Gori overdrive propellers, she motored at a brisk 7 knot pace with ease.

Otherwise her layout is pretty straightforward. There is plenty of space between the hulls to stow a dinghy on davits off the back of the cockpit, huge lockers forward to keep fenders and warps and plenty of additional stowage for extra sails such as the Code 0. All of which is very much in keeping with the typical layout of modern production cats.

Outdoor saloon

The arrangement of her main living accommodation is one of the few areas where she differs from the norm. Her saloon, for instance, is more outside than in. The patio-type doors and the main athwartships bulkhead run across the boat at approximately midships making the normal, inside living accommodation smaller than would be typical for this size of boat.

A modest table/navigation station is set to port and the galley is to starboard leaving the main saloon outside, abaft the patio doors where it shares the cockpit space.

Screen shot 2015-09-07 at 14.37

While this might sound unusual – and less appealing for colder climates – the layout is certainly comfortable and practical and can be arranged to provide more shelter if required with the awning panels that clip into the underside of the coachroof and the cockpit coamings.

Apart from making the outdoor saloon a more pleasant place to sit while sailing or at anchor, the logic behind the configuration also stems from looking at how people actually use their boats. If it’s warm enough to be aboard that’s fine, but if it’s too cold the pub or a restaurant is a popular option.

The Nautitech comes in either a three or four cabin configuration, the former aimed at an owner’s layout with a spacious heads and shower area in the forward end of the port hull where a cabin would be in the four-cabin version. Both layouts have the provision for single skipper/crew berths in the bows.

AY7Q5311

There are a couple of areas that may raise an eyebrow or two. The first is her builder, Bavaria. If you didn’t know before you started looking over her you’d be hard pressed to guess. So why would Bavaria want to build multihulls?

The answer lies in their desire to expand in the charter market, which they believe now means having a range of multihulls. So, instead of developing a range from scratch, Bavaria chose to buy into the market with the acquisition of Nautitech in 2014 and keep the production outfit in Rochefort, near La Rochelle.

The transaction has been of benefit to both sides after Bavaria brought its expertise in joiner work to Nautitech and raised the game for the French builders. This catamaran has also been designed as a powerboat. Seeing an identical looking boat passing at twice the speed with no rig and the crew sitting on the coachroof cum flybridge is bound to take the owners of the sailing version by surprise.

As is so often the case, once you start sketching out the ideal wishlist for a good, practical family cruiser the sum of the parts can easily point to a catamaran. Yet no matter how compelling the advantages of space and comfort are, factors such as performance and the practicality of berthing, especially in the UK, can count heavily against making a shift to two hulls.

But the Nautitech Open 40 goes a long way to addressing at least one of these issues. She really is a fun and rewarding cruiser to sail, especially as you don’t feel as if you’re perched high above the water and forced to sail from the leeward side on one tack at the only wheel on the boat.

AY7Q5085 copy

She lends herself well to short-handed sailing thanks to a simple, but intelligent cockpit layout. And when it comes to berthing, at just 40ft LOA she’s sufficiently modest in length and beam to slip into most marinas and harbours.

Her price tag of £291,600 ex VAT will make her feel considerably bigger than a typical 40ft monohull, but then that is because she is, especially below decks.

So, though at first glance you might think she’s just another production cat, the reality is the Nautitech Open 40 is quite different. I was impressed.

Description

nautitech

Test one out yourself – charter a Nautitech 40 Open – browse our available yachts in the Mediterranean and Caribbean. We previously owned one of these boats, and we are trying to make this the most comprehensive owner’s review on the Internet.

The Franco-German Axis Nautitech is now owned by Germany’s Capital Management Partners who also own Bavaria, but their boats continue to be built in Rochefort, France. These catamarans are constructed with a resin-infused technique that results in a light, strong finish. The decks include a closed-cell foam core. The joinery is high quality on these cruising cats – especially considering their price point.

This review is from personal experience- we’ll try and keep it objective! You can also read our Owner’s review that we compiled for a prospective buyer that will give you another angle as we were answering specific questions. We wrote this up following the boat delivery from La Rochelle to Barcelona.

1 Minute Summary

– For her length, the Nautitech 40 Open is one of the lightest catamarans in her class (Cruising Catamarans) – As long as you don’t overload her, she gets going quickly and is fast – The reefing system is traditional – it is done from the mast. – There is lots of living space up top thanks to the Open concept and twin aft helms – The saloon is smaller than many of her competitors. However, the aft cockpit area is big. – There is less space down below. That is your trade off for slender hulls and faster performance – The boom is low. She is a seaworthy boat in a blow thank to a low centre of effort on the mainsail. – It is also very easy to get to the boom and mainsail. – Nautitech build their boats using foam composite rather than the balsa wood used by many of the competition. – The after sales service can be slow and frustrating. This isn’t a problem that is peculiar to this brand, but it would be an easy one to fix for happier customers. Come on Nautitech!

  • Marc Lombard’s Open design gives you a big living space for a forty foot catamaran, the most in her class with the exception of maybe the Bali 4.1. Once you slide those doors open, she has plenty of space under way and at anchor.
  • She’s light for a production cruising cat and accelerates quickly compared to other brands. The Nautitech 40 Open is a good compromise between speed and comfort. She’s nippy!
  • She points well upwind for a fixed keel cat. You won’t match a dagger-board cat upwind, but the performance upwind isn’t bad, she’ll certainly get you off a lee shore. I can only really think of Seawind as a match for Lombard’s hull design. She’s comfortable at 50-55° TWA with not much leeway. In lighter winds, 60° TWA probably give you the best VMG especially with a Code 0.
  • For a 12m boat, she is very seaworthy in heavy conditions. In a real blow, the 3rd reef takes you down to a small centralised mainsail (with no jib) and she handles waves well. With the 2nd reef in and 60% solent you are good up to 35 knots apparent.
  • The boom tucks in low over the coachroof which gives her a low centre of effort and means it is easy to access the mainsail and reefing lines. That is one of the reasons why she feels so seaworthy in a blow.
  • That helm position is easy for docking if you reverse her in. The person at the helm can throw the lines if he or she wants to and you can keep an eye on everyone if you are under way (important with kids). You are in constant contact with the cockpit from here. I tend to sit facing aft on the steps by the helm and back in.
  • At the same time, Nautitech have done a great job of making you feel safe aft under way with those aft helms. There’s a bench that runs along the aft beam and the helm seats are substantial- when you are tucked into one, it feels very secure and there are decent clip on points under the helm seats.
  • The flip-side to those aft helms is visibility to the opposite bow. If you can afford it, go for the option of throttles on both helms so that you can easily switch sides. I generally just nip up to the deck every now and then.
  • The aft helms can get wet in a blow or in bad weather. If you are offshore, this just means heading inside to helm from the nav station (great visibility here), but you might have to get your wet weather gear on if there is rain coming into the marina. For sailing feel, however, you can’t beat them.
  • All the reefing is done at the mast. OK, it’s not far to hop up there, but I would have preferred a similar set up to the bigger 44 where all the lines run aft to the helm. Although the longer I have the boat, the more I like the simplicity of the system, there’s less friction on the reefing lines, less to go wrong. It’s interesting to note that the Marsaudon 57 has the same set-up (bigger sail though!)
  • With narrower hulls designed to slip through the water faster, the cabins are not as big as a Lagoon or Fountaine Pajot. That’s your compromise. Personally speaking, I find the cabins very comfortable- they’re big enough for me. I went for speed over fatter hulls, Lombard is a master shaper.
  • With so much space given over to the aft cockpit, the saloon is smaller than many other 40 footers. That works well in warmer climes, but if it is colder I would recommend the clear enclosure. Once these are down, it’s cosy.
  • I sometimes find it difficult to gauge the position of the mainsheet traveller on the bimini. There is a window in the roof, but t can be difficult to judge without popping up a step from the helm. I have just marked off the centre… not really a big deal.
  • The Nautitech after sales service isn’t what I would call efficient. They take a pretty hands off approach – everything is done through the dealers, so it is important to choose your dealer well. The better their relationship, the better the response. I had a faulty heating system which took me a year to fix. This included the Coronavirus lock down period, but still, I expected a faster resolution. Nautitech are not alone in this regard though, I just wish they’d up their game on this front, it would be an easy fix. Keep your your existing customers happy and they might buy another Nautitech in the future.

nautitech catamaran

This is a cruising cat, but with an eye on performance compared to other boats like the Lagoon 380 and the “Open” concept has proved hugely popular.

She’s Light Nautitech have kept an eye on the weight of the boat (she’s only 8.5 tonnes light) and as long as you don’t go crazy on the gear, she accelerates quickly.

19 Knot Surf Our top speed on our boat so far is 19 knots (OK we were surfing, but even so). In decent conditions, you should hit the early teens. In light winds, we’ll go 6 kts on 10kts of wind just with the mainsail and self tacking solent.

Order the Bowsprit The Nautitech 40 Open comes in all sorts of configurations- it’s worth ordering the bowsprit as this opens up all sorts of options for head sails to complement the efficient square-top mainsail.

We run the 70 sq.m gennaker off there and there is also an option for a 55 sq.m code 0 if you want to point higher. We have heard from other owners that the Code 0 comes out of the bag frequently. We also have a parasailor on our wish list for when we make it to the Trade Winds.

nautitech catamaran

There are also two winches and clutches on the aft beam to help with the traveler and raising the tender.

The main halyard also comes aft to the starboard side and you can order an electric winch as an option to help you raise the mainsail. Or you can use the winch at the mast, a handy back up.

You Reef from the Mast All the reefing lines and the topping lift are managed from the mast which means getting out on deck to shorten sail. I am thinking of reorganising the running rigging on our boat and lead all of the lines back into the cockpit like the bigger boat, the 44.

Or that’s what I thought when I first bought her. I have to admit, the longer I have the boat, the more I am warming to the simplicity of this system. There’s less friction, shorter lines and it’s easier to get tension on the halyard once the reef is strapped in. You need to be organised though to minimise the time you spend at the mast.

There’s a handy winch on the mast for your reefing lines and gennaker halyard and another clutch for the main halyard so that you can manage this from the mast if you like (can be handy if you are sailing single handed). I have added some frictionless rings below the mast winch for the reefing lines to improve the angle that they come onto the winch as I was have problems stripping lines on the clutches.

One thing I have noticed is that there are plenty of places to clip on, and a nice sturdy rail on the coachroof aft. There’s a deep well after that to grab onto as you move forward towards the mast- she feels safe in that respect.

The boom is low and very easy to access from the bimini top. There are some open steps by the mast to climb up.

nautitech catamaran

Helm with the Wind in Your Hair Not everyone is a fan of the Nautitech Open helm position- she sports twin aft helms (read our Excess 11 review for another boat with a similar configuration) and there is an option for helm biminis for improved protection. Personally we love this configuration- it’s similar to a Catana (with more substantial helm seats) and gives you a real sailing feel when you are under way. Because the fibreglass sides are high by the helms, you feel secure tucked in here. There’s a point to clip onto under the seat if it gets rough.

Easy to Trim your Sails It’s easy to keep an eye on the tell-tales on the head sail- just as you would on a Hobie 16. If the weather turns nasty, you either helm with the autopilot in the saloon or tuck in under the bimini close to the helm. Make sure you order the electric winch at the Starboard Helm. Raising the mainsail with that is easy, although I always raise the sail manually to be begin with until the first couple of battens are clear of the lazy jacks.

There is an option for having throttles on both helms. The standard configuration just has them on the starboard side (this is what we went for: the budget ran out.)

She Accelerates Quickly Because she’s relatively light, she gets going quickly and Lombard has shaped those hulls so that they slip through the water nicely below the waterline. Don’t load her up too much though. Narrower hulls means less living space down below, so she’s not as spacious as a Lagoon in the cabins (there’s your compromise). In the cockpit, it’s a different story with that Open concept and the twin helms aft.

Docking the boat is a breeze as well, although, to repeat myself, try and go for the option of having those throttles on both helms if you can afford it. Because you are so close to the transom, one person can theoretically helm and throw the ropes. It’s easier with 2 of course.

nautitech catamaran

She Goes Through the Wind Well She tacks easily and as you come off the wind, she’s fast ! There’s a Youtube clip showing a 40 doing 20 knots doing the rounds (we saw over 19 knots surfing on our delivery trip).

And when you hit those numbers in that helm position, you’ll have a smile plastered all over your face.

A Nippy Boat On average, you’ll see 7-9 knots. The nice thing about her is that she gets moving nice and quickly in light winds and this is where that gennaker option comes in handy. If the wind hits 7 knots, you should be sailing. In a freshening breeze, you should see low and even mid teens on a reach.

Sailing Close to the Wind Upwind, she points well for a fixed keel catamaran- a Seawind is probably the only boat that can match her. She’ll point happily at 50 to true but you are probably better off pointing at 55 (more speed, less leeway). The sweet spot seems to be around 40 to 45 degrees AWA.

In lighter winds the performance drops off, unless you have a Code 0 in your sail locker of course. If your budget ran out on the gennaker, just stick the leeward engine on at low revs to point higher and you will get where you need to go. That would be about 30 degrees apparent, 45 true.

At the end of the day, if you are going to be close hauled all day, every day on a multihull you are best off with dagger-boards, but the 40 Open is no slouch close to the wind, especially if there is a decent breeze. In lighter air, the performance does drop off when compared to a dagger-board cat like an Outremer but that is the case for any fixed keel catamaran.

The Nautitech 40 Open comes with 30 HP engines as standard, but I would recommend the upgrade to the 50s (used to be 40s). One engine will push you along at around 6 knots at 2200 RPM in calm conditions. With both engines going, she’ll move comfortably at 7 depending on the sea state.

If the waves are building, it’s often advisable to power up both engines to help you punch through the waves for a more comfortable ride if you are heading upwind.

Living Space

nautitech catamaran

A Big Interconnected Space The design of the Open 40 is all about giving you more space in the cockpit and less in the saloon, so this boat is particularly suited to warmer climes like the Med. Below decks, the configuration is either three cabins (Owner’s) or four Cabins (charter version).

Slender Hulls with a Chime The hulls aren’t as spacious as a Lagoon (there’s your speed/space trade off), but they are very comfortable and there´s still far more space than you would get on a monohull, although Lombard has sculpted chimes into the hulls (they flare at the top) like the Catana 53 which gives a good performance/comfort balance.

All the cabins have huge windows through which you can watch the world go by.

Option for Night Watch Bed There is an option for a telescopic table in the saloon (port side) which we have gone for. This gives you a night watch berth if you need it.

Why No Double Sink? The galley is to starboard and is nicely designed with everything to hand. We would have liked to have seen a double sink, or a sink and a half. There’s room. The other thing that we find annoying is that the galley tap is very short which means you get a lot of splash back against the doors. We are going to fit a tap with a longer arm.

When you are cooking at the burners, you are facing aft connected to that large outdoor cockpit area. The doors can be thrown wide open to connect the two spaces into one joined up area: hence the name, the Open. The position of the cupboard behind the burners is not great. You have to watch yourself here is you are cooking and leaning over the hob to get stuff out of the cupboard.

There is an option to go for an additional fridge in the aft cockpit and a freezer in the starboard hull, both of which we would recommend.

Construction

nautitech catamaran

The big difference between Nautitech and some of the competition is the use of foam composite , versus balsa core. The hull, deck and roof are built with a fibreglass and polyester sandwich infusion. This allows for significant weight savings.

The process used is: VacuTec a vacuum infusion technology. This helps to keep the boat light, reducing the weight by 20% and emissions from the work processes by up to 80%. You get lighter and stronger hulls, and protection against osmosis by isophthalic acid resin in external systems.

Issues to Monitor on New Boats

All new boats have teething problems- that is not a problem that is unique to Nautitech. We logged the following issues on our own Nautitech 40 Open, or through the Nautitech Owner’s Facebook Group, so hopefully this will help you to isolate any problems at the handover stage and minimise the work later. Hopefully you won’t have to deal with any of these problems (but you would probably be the first boat owner that happened to 😉 ) The bottom line is, these are niggles, not serious problems. Some of them have been corrected on later models (eg sun damage on the grey roof. They switched to white)

  • Batteries. Our boat was fitted with Genois batteries: 5x LPC12-75 for the service batteries and 2x LPC12-100 for the starter batteries. Within 18 months, they were dead 4 hours after fully charged, and that was with light use, due to Covid (mostly connected to shore power). Horizon Yachts have had similar issues with the batteries supplied by Nautitech, and we are still battling to claim the warranty. My advice would be to insist on another brand of battery. You can actually fit 6 service batteries in the trays in the port hulls. The standard upgrade take you to 5.
  • Noisy steering – the steering became very noisy on our boat on our delivery passage sailing across the Bay of Biscay. I mean really noisy, like a cat screeching every minute. It was difficult to isolate, but it turns out that the rods that connect the helms under the aft cockpit run through plastic tubes. These weren´t secured properly, and the rods were playing the tubes like a violin. Played by a terrible violinist I might add. An easy fix, once we had isolated the problem, but check the workmanship around the steering.
  • Stripped reefing lines. The teeth on the jammer at the front of the boom which secure the reefing lines were very sharp on our boat. If lines are flailing about in heavy weather, this can strip the reefing lines. Make sure you lead the lines through the block you should have been given before wrapping them around the winch. If you don’t do that, the angle will be such that you may strip the lines on the edge of the casing – also very sharp. Check closely around the front of the boom and file stuff down if you need to. We now run our reefing lines through frictionless rings below the mast winch which has solved the problem.
  • B&G Autopilot disengaging. This seems to only happen in “Nav” mode when you are navigating to a waypoint. We never resolved that one. Faulty wiring somewhere? Software?
  • If you ordered the heating system, check the air inlet and exhaust. There should be a bend in this to make sure that seawater does not get into the diesel burner. Ours wasn’t installed properly and failed in big seas crossing the Bay of Biscay. Nautitech fixed this on the guarantee, fair play.
  • Sliding Door. Check this closely. We had a problem with the door jumping out of its tracks mid passage in waves – pretty dangerous! On closer inspection, Nautitech had only used one screw instead of two on the plastic wedge which the door comes to a rest on in the open position. Check the door doesn’t slide a little when it is locked- often this is just a case of small adjustments.
  • Manual bilges – check the pump handles (at the back of the cockpit benches) work and are properly sealed. Fill up the bilge manually with a bucket of water and pump it out yourself to test the bilges.
  • You can test the auto bilges at the same time. We had alarms going off with water running back and forth on our passage as the levels weren’t set correctly. Again, an easy fix, but do it on the handover.
  • Owners have reported issues with the bilges running continuously. You should check the fresh water pump (Marco) first to make sure there are no leaks coming from there. Then check the hoses. If there is a loop at the outlet the pump won’t clear all the water  and some is left in the hose. Also if the non return value on the pump has failed it will run back out of the pump and the pump will start up again. Bottom line is, test all the bilge pumps extensively during the handover. When you take the boat speed paddle wheel out to clean, you will get a bit of sea-water in the port bilge. Pump it out manually to make sure the bilge is dry.
  • Sun damage on the coachroof (grey strip) on older models. Many owner’s have reported UV damage on the grey strip running around the coachroof. Our boat was no exception: after only 18 months the finish is faded and mottled with the sun. Nautitech are sending out a wrapping to sort this issue. You can also polish them back, but I think the problem will reoccur. Newer boats come with a white coachroof, solving the problem.

In Conclusion

Any boat is a compromise, and we think the Nautitech 40 Open is a great sailing boat at a reasonable price, but they could do with improving their after sales service. Lombard has done a great job of designing a boat with so much living space (the Open concept) that is this quick. The hulls are narrower than other boats in her class, but there is plenty of room upstairs thanks to that big joined up space.

View the Nautitech 40 Open Brochure .

What are good options to go for? We’d recommend upgraded engines (now 50HP) if you can manage it in your budget, plus folding props (giving you an extra knot), electric winch on starboard helm, bowsprit with gennaker, radar, the fridge in the cockpit, freezer in starboard hull, additional service batteries (insist on another brand rather than “Genois”), solar, inverter, Fusion audio system and the salon dining table (lowerable).

What are the “nice to have” options” If you can afford it, go for the throttles on both helms, the anchor windlass control at the helm, freezer in starboard hull, heating system. The Explorer version is the pack to go for if you can afford it. The full aft cockpit enclosure is great too, they have extended it right back to the bench on the transom in the newer boats. The teak looks nice but adds weight. Same with the outside teak table.

What’s the Main Difference Between the Nautitech 40 Open and the 44 Open. Well, the length obviously, but these 2 designs are very similar. In the larger model, all of the lines come aft to the helms which is a plus. The aft cockpits are a similar length (the 44 is beamier), but the saloon in the 44 feels much bigger – it’s probably around twice the size. You can configure the 44 with an overlapping genoa instead of the self-tacking solent. You cannot do this on the smaller boat.

How High Does a Nautitech 40 Open Point into the Wind? You are not going to point as high as a daggerboard cat in light winds, but for a fixed keel cat, the Open 40 points very well into the wind, especially with the weight off and with clean hulls. In a decent breeze (13kts and over), she will point as close to 30 degrees apparent but your speed will drop and you will be losing about 10 degrees on leeway. To maximise your VMG, drop off another 5 or 10 degrees (so 40-45 degrees AWA or around 55-60 TWA and your speed will come up and the leeway will drop off a bit. Sheet in tight and put some twist in the main with the mast track car to windward.

What is the Top Speed you Have Hit on the Open 40? We hit 19.2 knots off the coast of Portugal (surfing). You should hit low teens on a beam reach in the right conditions with the gennaker up.

What size tender can you fit on the Nautitech 40 Open? We have a 3.10 Gala with an 8HP Yamaha Engine (in hindsight I should have gone 9.9 HP). This is about as big as you want to go, although I know another owner has fitted a Brig 330 which is 320 long, but it was tight.

How much does a Nautitech 40 Open cost? What is the price of this catamaran? At the time of writing, the base price was just over €310,000, slightly more for the owner´s version. But then you have to add on all of the options (eg Comfort or Explorer version). Once you add extras like a water maker, heating, engine upgrade, navigation system and so on you can easily add on a extra €100k – 150k or more.

  • NAUTITECH 48 OPEN CATAMARAN

Introducing the brand new Nautitech 48 Open catamaran. Available with 5 different layouts this innovative performance cruiser is equipped with twin aft helm stations for excellent maneuvers and visibility. Designed from the ground up by a team of ocean racers, naval architects and multihull specialists the new  Nautitech 48 possesses the same DNA as all Nautitech cruising catamarans. Strong, light, exquisitely finished, a luxurious interior and a high performance under sail.

The Latest in Luxury on Two Hulls

The unique concept of combining both the covered cockpit with the enclosed salon creates a combined space only found in yachts much larger. This is just one of the reasons the Nautitech 48  is a top choice for ocean cruisers, live boards but also performance charter companies, who want to offer customers something a bit more special. In a market of bulky catamarans, the new 48 stands out as a streamlined and purposeful looking boat that puts sailing pleasures back into your cruising. The Nautitech 48 Open is available in 5 different layout configurations.

Quality and Finish above the Rest

Both the new Nautitech 44 Open as well as her larger sister,  Nautitech 48 Open catamarans are a huge step above the older Nautitech models in terms of finish and the level of luxury. Nautitech builds them for people who love traveling the seas. It doesn’t matter whether you voyage for a few days or are on an extended journey. Enjoy secluded anchorages, or sail at speed from port to port. With the Nautitech 48 catamaran you can experience all this without sacrificing comfort or luxury.

The Nautitech 48  is manufactured in Rochefort on the Atlantic Ocean. She is the embodiment of over thirty years of experience in the construction of cruising catamarans by the French builder.

Design is in the Details

The Nautitech 48  catamaran was drafted by Marc Lombard, one of the most successful yacht designers in France. Vessels designed by Marc Lombard guarantee perfect sailing performance and seagoing hulls. The elegant and functional design below deck comes from the pen of Stéphane Roséo and his team at Studio Roséo Design.

Double Helms inspired by Racing Yachts

Experienced cruisers know this fact: 90% of the time you will be cruising utilizing your autopilot. Consequently the few times you want to hand-steer and take control of the helm – you desire the best feedback possible. Controlling a catamaran with your fingertips alone, feeling every gust of wind will make you a better and safer sailor. You will always have the course, the horizon and the sail in view without losing visual contact with the crew. Consequently this is one of the many great advantages of the Nautitech 48 Open.

Nautitech 44 Open (2024) 'SempreVerde'

Nautitech 44 open

The Nautitech 44 Open is the latest design in the Nautitech lineup to get really excited about!

This new design builds on the successful Nautitech ‘Open’ concept and so delivers a ‘wide grin’ sailing performance. The 44 Open is probably the fastest cruising catamaran available for a bareboat charter. She can point higher than any other cruising cat (that does not have daggerboards -which consume interior space), thanks to her high aspect sail plan, tight sheeting angles, high aspect rudders, a draft of 4ft 9“and an excellent sail area to displacement ratio. The Open 44 remains stable, comfortable, and downright fun to sail on and off the wind.

Optimized cruising speeds are a result of the low wetted surface area enabled by narrow, hydrodynamic hulls below the waterline. While the hard-chined stepped hulls above the waterline give more interior living space.

You have an unobstructed view of the sails and the sea thanks to the double aft helm station positions; you can communicate and enjoy the sailing with all the crew members in the cockpit.

In a change from the design of the Open 40, the lower mainsheet track positioning is easy to adjust and see for perfect sail trim from the helm station. A low boom above the coach roof allows for extra efficiency from the mainsail, more sail area and easy access to the sail bag. The high aspect furling, and self-tacking jib, with all control lines led aft to electric winches for both sails, means the 44 Open is a breeze to sail short-handed.

There is rich joinery in the interior of the 44 Open which gives a warm and modern ambience aboard. The cockpit flows seamlessly into the saloon (the ethos of the Open concept) giving you the ideal indoor/outdoor living space for a yacht in the tropics. The galley conjoins the saloon and cockpit, so matter where the crew are, the chef is part of the socialising. The interior saloon area is cosy and offers a modular seating arrangement with cushioned cubes that can be moved around into a day bed, a footrest, or stools.

With the almost 360-degree view from the entrance of the saloon, you can happily escape (rare!) inclement weather or socialize at the cockpit table whilst still keeping an eye on your surroundings.

Thanks to a double-drawer fridge, cockpit fridge and freezer unit, there is excellent fridge capacity aboard.

Both hulls feature 2 cabins. The aft cabin has a queen-sized island bed and the forward cabin has a forward-facing double bed.

The seamlessly integrated companionway benefits from extra storage lockers. Both hulls have separate shower units and toilets allowing for easy living between guests. The toilet unit also has its own hand basin.

There is an integrated solar array on the coach roof as well as solar panels mounted on the dinghy davits. This removes the requirement to run your engine or generator to charge the lithium batteries on board on sunny days.

Some defining features that set SempreVerde apart are:

  • Starlink High-Speed Internet which is included for all charters in 2024
  • Nespresso Original Line Machine (remember to bring your own Nespresso pods as these can be hard to source in the BVI)
  • Three B&G Chartplotters (one at each helm station and one at the nav desk)
  • Multiple 110V outlets
  • Large lithium battery bank and large solar array (essentially eliminating the need to charge batteries using engines or generator)
  • Fresh-water hot/cold deck shower
  • Fresh-water deck hose
  • Exterior window coverings to keep the interior cool
  • Two fully finished forepeak cabins with USB outlets and lighting
  • Mast camera to make mooring ball retrieval easier
  • Two VHF radios (one handheld)
  • Separate throttle controls at each helm station to make docking and close-quarters maneuvering a breeze

Here's where to get your Boat Week merch this week

Portrait of Jackie Smith

Whether you’re participating in Saturday’s historic Port Huron-to-Mackinac Island Sailboat Race or visiting downtown to join in on the Boat Week fun, there are plenty of places to pick up a T-shirt or nautical souvenir to commemorate the occasion.

This year marks the second that MI Passion, 229 Huron Ave., has carried T-shirts with the Bayview logo for the Mackinac race — now with the emblem for its 100th anniversary.

But they’re going fast.

Boutique owner Anita Varty said she bought over 600 shirts, and by midday Thursday, had fewer than 200 left. Those include a women’s V-neck and a unisex shirt in white and gray colors. The race logo is shown enlarged on the back with a smaller version on the front chest of the shirts.

The shirts ranged in cost from $29.99 to $34.99. MI Passion was slated to be open until 8 p.m. Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Although they had plenty of other Michigan-made and nautical items, particularly themed for the lake and river, Varty said she was excited to be part of celebrating its 100th anniversary.

“The most exciting thing for me is seeing everybody out,” Varty said. “Like the energy downtown, I so looked forward to this week.”

Official Mackinac shirts can otherwise be purchased on Mackinac Island and through the Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit.

Port Huron Yacht club carrying 'Mac 2024' merch

The Port Huron Yacht Club’s women’s auxiliary is selling a variety of merchandise for both the club and specific items with a Mac 2024 logo, celebrating Port Huron’s spot as a start to the race but unaffiliated with the Bayview’s race merchandise.

Missy Smith, the auxiliary’s commodore, said the display of apparel would be out from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday and Friday and Saturday morning with whatever items were left unsold. Typically, she said they only acquire enough to sell out, having first started selling items five weeks ago and on Wednesday for Boat Week.

“And it’s looking like this year we will probably sell out," she said. "… That’s what I’ve been telling everybody on their boats. ‘Oh, I like that shirt.’ If you want to get one, I would go now.”

As of midday Thursday, the merch included women’s V-neck T-shirts, regular unisex cotton T-shirts, and men’s long-sleeve sport tech shirts all in several colors, as well as hooded zip-up sweatshirts and tank tops. There were also yacht club sweatpants that didn’t have the Mac 2024 logo and sandals.

“And then, this year, we bought a new item, and it’s a T-shirt hoodie,” Smith said. “So, it’s T-shirt material, but it’s long-sleeved, and it has a hood. They’re really comfortable. And we have those in three colors.”

Prices for the local club’s merchandise, Smith said, ranged from $20 for tank tops to $60 for the zip-up sweatshirts with T-shirts falling in between.

Plenty of other stops with nautical-themed items to celebrate

Outside the official race shirt and local yacht club merch, a few other spots downtown had displays with boat-themed or items with anchors and other nautical symbols.

The Huron Lady II, for example, docked on the East Quay Street side of the Black River, had hats and T-shirts — the latter prompting you “take a ride” — on display for sale with small icons of the iconic cruise.

Elsewhere, the downtown shoe store District 43 also carried plenty of other items, such as through the Michigan Boat Company label.

“That’s our company,” said store owner Jorja Baldwin. “So, we have Michigan Boat Company. We have Motor City sun shirts, Michigan Boat Company tank tops, and an unofficial Michigan Boat Company Mackinac shirt.”

Baldwin said District 43 would be open from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday and closed on Saturday.

When asked about their apparel, she said, “I like them all. It’s tank tops, T-shirts, sweatshirts because it’s Michigan. I feel like we have a little something for everyone. We have women’s tanks, and then, unisex things. The river mermaid because I like we can tie in the Black River and Lake Huron experiences.”

‘ZULU’ is a fabulous example of the Sunseeker 115 Sport Yacht and available exclusively through Bristow-Holmes. She is the newest available 115 Sport Yacht for sale in Europe and without doubt the most tastefully finished interior owing to her refit in 2017. Boasting an extensive specification, built for an experienced owner she features 11 berths in 5 cabins. Never chartered and always used privately this is an opportunity not to be missed.

‘ZULU’ is without doubt one of the most striking Sunseeker 115 Sport Yacht’s ever to leave the well renowned British Shipyard. Built in 2013 she benefits from a number of modifications to her standard specification over earlier models. Following an interior refit in 2017 ‘ZULU’ is unlike any other 115 Sport Yacht on the market.  ‘Zulu’s’ Interior woodwork & cabinetry is a combination of Satin Finish Black American Walnut and Wenge complemented with custom tables in Maccassar Ebony, and glass and stainless steel accents. Neutral colour and varied high quality fabrics enhance the décor.

The saloon has been modified to provide a much more homely and comfortable feeling, with folding balconies and sliding glass doors to both Port and Starboard she really opens up, allowing maximum light and air into the space. She accommodates up to 10 guests in 5 En-Suite Cabins.

The Owners Suite on the Main Deck benefits from the trade mark ‘up and over bulwarks’ thus gaining maximum space and privacy. Below decks a further 8 guests can be accommodated in 4 En-Suite Cabins. Two VIP Cabins Aft, a Double Cabin to Port and a spacious Twin Cabin to Starboard.

Crew accommodations are forward on the lower deck with independent crew access. Two Twin Crew cabins and a separate Captain’s cabin. All cabins have ensuite heads, and a Day head is located in the Foyer area main deck

The flybridge boasts a striking Jacuzzi and Sunbathing arrangement as well as dining area for up to 14 guests on the port side and highly popular bar on the starboard side. Built for enjoying life on the water the Sunseeker 115 Predator is one of Sunseeker’s most popular models.

Symmetrical stairs from the aft deck down to the large swim platform provide easy access to the sea and the tender garage which houses a 5.4m tender, and 2 jet skis. The hydraulic swim platform submerges for easy launching of the tender and further toys.

All exterior upholstery has just been replaced along with a re-spray on the stern quarters of the hull, she presents impeccably, viewings are highly recommended.

No expenses have been spared in the maintenance of ‘ZULU’ with the recent completion of her RINA 5 Year Survey being a complete walk in the park.

Bristow-Holmes are delighted to offer ‘ZULU’ For Sale and we’re confident she will sell quickly following her 1,000,000 Euro Price Reduction.

a large white yacht in the water aboard 2018 SUNSEEKER 116 Yacht for Sale

Sunseeker Predator 115

A true sports yacht, the Sunseeker Predator 115 extends the comforts of Sunseeker’s super yachting into an upbeat market. She is built to RINA classification and provides for a guest party of up to ten in five cabins, with a crew of five. For the owner moving up through the range this Predator has a raised wheelhouse and full flybridge and so presents even greater entertainment opportunity, whether in party mode of full bore passage making. This vessel features twin MTU engines matched to shaft drives which allow her to perform up to 26 knots! From the sedan hard top to full beam capped forward sections, the design emphasis is on pace, but sittting at anchor while the tender and skis circle and play (which are securely garaged when under way), or swimmers snorkel from the rise and fall bathing platform, she also enjoys a more peaceful pose.

With more internal space, and similar plan, to the 34 Meter Yacht, the 115 is appointed throughout to the highest standards, be it the AV or AC equipment, with of course individual cabin control of both, and with much of the infrastructure so neatly concealed in the cabinetry, merging with the onboard aesthetic. Another option on the main deck is to have convertible balconies through the bulwark on both sides of the saloon which, when combined with doors from the saloon, make for patio extensions. Another desirable feature of this boat is that it has a main-deck master stateroom which provides for stunning views for the owner. Also, you have the option of having a shower and separate jacuzzi, or a large central walk through shower with additional stowage room. From her daring profile to the design house ceramics, soft touch Italian fabrics and sheen of the chosen wood grain, the Sunseeker Predator 115 is quite a sensation.

1993 how the construction company remstroy was created   the year 1993 was a period when a lot of construction companies, which had been working successfully during the soviet times and had rich staff capacity, were forced to cease their activity for various reasons. a lot of capable specialists either had to look for another job or change their field. but there were also those who were willing to realise their potential in the field of construction in accordance with the received degree and the experience they had accumulated. thus, in 1993 in elektrostal (moscow oblast) a group of specialists and people sharing each other’s ideas, who had enormous educational background and the highest degree in architecture, organized and registered ooo firm erg which began its rapid development and successful work, offering its service both on the construction market and other areas. 2000 industrial construction is the main area   seven years of successful work have shown that combining different types of activities in the same company is not always convenient. and in the year 2000 the founders of ooo firm erg decided to create and register a monoprofile construction company ooo remstroy construction company. industrial construction was chosen as the priority area. it was in this area that the directors of ooo sk remstroy began their working life and grew as specialists. in order to achieve the set goal, they selected a mobile team of professionals in the field of industrial construction, which allows us to cope with the tasks assigned to ooo sk remstroy throughout russia and the near abroad. 2010 manufacturing of metal structures   we possess modern equipment that allows us to carry out the entire cycle of works on the manufacture of metal structures of any complexity without assistance. designing – production – installation of metal structures. a staff of professionals and well-coordinated interaction of the departments let us carry out the work as soon as possible and in accordance with all customer’s requirements.” extract from the list of members of self-regulatory organizations, construction.

Boats set sail from Monroe Harbor for annual Race to Mackinac

WLS logo

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Boats set sail Saturday morning from Monroe Harbor for the annual Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac.

"This is super exciting," said John Desmond, a sailor in the race. "I don't think there's a lot of places in the world where you can have this kind of a view of the city."

230 boats are traveling well over 300 miles to Michigan's Mackinac Island in Lake Huron.

This year is the 114th running of the famed regatta, known by many as 'the Mac.'

"When you leave, you always look at the skyline to see how far away you're getting," said Michael Schultes, a sailor in the race. "And when it's gone, you say my goodness, we're in the race."

2,100 sailors from around the world and across the country set sail.

"Year-after-year, I keep saying, this is the last one, but I keep coming back," said Jamal Alwattar, a sailor in the race. "It's really challenging. It's an endurance race."

This year is Alwattar's 31st time in the regatta.

Boat crews range in size from just two members to as many as 22 people, depending on the size of the boat.

"There is a lot more communication going on, as opposed to just like two people, you have to talk to everybody so everybody understands what's going on," said Luci Ramirez, a sailor in the race.

For 15-year-old Ramirez and 16-year-old Lauren Gullo, this is their first time in 'the Mac,' and they were eager to get sailing.

"I'm very excited about getting there and celebrating with my family once I get there," Gullo said.
