Portrait of a building site / Solaris the yacht made in Italy

solaris yacht indigo

The Italian-style design served by a modern and quality workmanship, the discreet roofs, the elegance of the taut lines, these are some of the characteristics of the Solaris sailing yachts. Represented in France for only 5 years, it quickly found its place on the luxury yacht market.

Charly Fernbach

Italian shipyard , Solaris develops its market towards Europe. This range of 37 to 73 foot sailboats, designed for the sun and the pleasure of "beautiful sailing", has been represented in France for 5 years.

Solaris

Hedonistic boating

It doesn't take much effort to imagine yourself gliding along on an indigo water surface with a Solaris , then deploying the back deck at anchor and enjoying a glass of prosecco with your feet in the water. For this range of sailboats, the sailing program is that of hedonistic boating. Vacations with family or friends, offshore sailing and, on occasion, why not a crewed regatta.

Many boats are more typical. Some are more suitable for ocean sailing, others for lazing around at anchor , or even those that cut their prestige by sailing upwind. The Solaris are above all very beautiful sailing boats, but they do not forget their function and the versatility necessary to make a good sailing boat.

These boats are designed for sailors who are sensitive to the aesthetics and elegance of the Italian way of life, those whose "dolce vita" invites them to sail when the weather is good and a beautiful anchorage is on the horizon.

Solaris

Italian design

Contemporary, elegant, racy, rewarding... For a long time, Italian creators have distinguished themselves in the field of industrial design: Vespa, Riva, Wally , Ducati, Maserati, are the flagships.

Solaris is of this lineage, we first see a beautiful boat. It is distinguished by the emotion it arouses. The engineers in Trieste (the place where the shipyard is located) have a respect for design, for example when asked: " Why such small roof windows ?" Larger ones might be brighter. The worksite's response is accompanied by a benevolent smile:" We know how to make it bigger, but it's not elegant. "

Then when you get closer and look around, you notice the quality of the materials, the assemblies, the finishes, the manufacturing technique and you realize that if the Solaris is a beautiful sailboat , it also seems to be well made.

Solaris

Specific characteristics of the "Italian" design

On the deck, the maneuvers are hidden. The halyards, sheets and other rails are invisible for the pleasure of the eyes and bare feet. The flush-deck inspired design - i.e. without roof prominence - is sublime, but imposes some concessions. The roof will not be able to protect the crew in the cockpit from the wind and spray when the weather changes. The roof windows are narrow and let little light into the cockpit...

The Solaris cockpits are not very deep and the winches are not placed in the best position for ergonomic maneuvering. Finally, as there is no piano on the roof, maneuvers are sent aft to the helm station or remain at the foot of the mast. Everything is elegantly thought out, but like the absence of footrests in the cockpit, one might think that sometimes ergonomics takes second place to design.

Solaris

Modern and pragmatic manufacturing technique.

Jean-Pierre Mari of the Solaris Yacht shipyard proudly claims that all of his yachts are built in Italy in modern workshops. The construction method can be described as both artisanal and high-end. Indeed, the hull and deck are vacuum infused. The manufacturing materials are homogeneous and use fiberglass, vinylester resin and airex foam. The composite bulkheads are laminated to the hull and deck, guaranteeing a real rigidity of the structure. The shipyard uses a little carbon on sensitive parts such as chainplate reinforcements for example.

On the inside, as on the large units, there is no counter-mould, so this requires many hours of sanding, filling and trimming. This technique also allows to keep a reasonable weight estimate.

SOLARIS Yacht – Exquisite $600M Superyacht

The SOLARIS yacht was newly launched in 2021 by Lloyd Werft.

At 139.7 meters (458 ft), SOLARIS is considered an absolute giant in the world of superyachts and ranks as the 15th largest in the world.

SOLARIS yacht interior

No official photos of the interior of the SOLARIS yacht have been released, so the exact design is unknown.

However, judging from the minimalist and modern layout of the decks, it can be assumed that the interior follows a similar trend.

The German designer Frank Neubelt is said to have worked on the interior of SOLARIS, although details of the project are unknown.

The yacht is one of the largest in the world, so it comes as no surprise that the SOLARIS yacht can accommodate an impressive 36 guests onboard.

Around 60 crew members find space in the cabins below deck and are available to tend to every need of the passengers.

The yacht also features a large gym, spa, and several salons to host events and welcome guests.

MY SOLARIS Specifications

MY SOLARIS was built in 2021 by the German shipyard Lloyd Werft and became the largest vessel they had ever delivered.

The total length of the yacht is 139.7 meters (458 ft) which makes her 23 meters (75 ft) shorter than Abramovic’s other famous yacht, ECLIPSE.

Her beam is 21.35 meters (70 ft), and her draft measures 5.95 meters (19.6 ft). Her total weight lies at 11,247 tons.

The SOLARIS yacht is powered by six MTU engines which allow her to travel at an average cruise speed of 18 knots with top speeds of 20 knots.

SOLARIS yacht exterior

The exterior of MY SOLARIS was designed by Marc Newson Ltd , an Australian industrial designer who has worked in several industries, including aircraft, furniture, and clothing.

His work is easily recognizable by smooth lines and rounded shapes with geometric elements.

The SOLARIS yacht is a prime example of this with its sleek look, rounded balconies, and many windows. Her eight decks have an unusually light wood that decorates the many open spaces of the vessel.

There are several extendable platforms to release tenders and toys and a large beach club located close to the swimming platform.

Of course, SOLARIS includes a full-size helipad as well as several swimming pools, one of which is located on the largest of the decks aft of the vessel.

SOLARIS yacht price

Yacht SOLARIS was delivered to Abramovic for a reported price of US $600 million, placing her among the most expensive superyachts in the world.

She generates a further US $50 – $60 million in annual running costs.

Solaris 55 first look: an ‘aggressive increase in form stability’

Yachting World

  • May 9, 2024

Solaris Yachts are launching a new version of their popular Solaris 55 as the brand continues to refine their luxury fast cruisers

The Solaris 55 drawing

During its 50th anniversary, Solaris Yachts is launching a new version of this popular model size, Solaris 55. This shows Solaris and its faithful designer, Soto Acebal, continuing to refine their stylish luxury fast cruisers.

Three heads with separate showers and a longitudinal tender garage are the main differences over the seven-year-old original 55, but it also involves subtle changes throughout. In terms of shape, it has an increased beam (5m) and more volume forward for stability and trim, plus a larger forward cabin and sail locker.

The interior styling in wood.

The stark interior styling is by Adi Design in a classic Med layout with the owner’s cabin forward.

Stability with Solaris 55

“There is an aggressive increase in form stability with special treatment in the forward zones, where local righting moments rise quickly with heeling,” Acebal explains, adding that the changes should improve balance, performance and seaworthiness in Solaris 55.

Beneteau First 36 review: Is this the best First yacht in years?

You might not appreciate it at first glance, but this could well be the best performance production yacht we’ll see…

The low coachroof is also much shorter, allowing for a large and completely flush foredeck, which Acebal compares to a mini maxi. Buyers can also opt for a compact crew cabin option instead of the sail locker. Steps incorporated into the transom, meanwhile, make it easier to access the platform and garage (as per the new 74).

The stark interior styling is by Adi Design in a classic Med layout with the owner’s cabin forward. This en-suite cabin is available with a central or offset berth, while the aft cabins also have their own heads compartments and separate showers.

Solaris is celebrating its half century with the Solaris Cup in Porto Rotondo, Sardinia, in late May. Impressively, over 70 Solaris yachts are expected, including the brand new 74. The Aquileia yard is hoping the first example of the 55 will then be finished in time for Cannes boat show  and the autumn shows.

Ocean Navigator

S olaris Yachts of Aquilea, Italy, designs and builds a unique line of state-of-the-art cruising yachts for sailors who desire the best mix of speed, stability, comfort and ease of maneuvering in all kinds of weather. With sailing vessels ranging in size from 40 to 111 feet LOA, you can sail the world’s oceans in a deck and cabin setting that embraces a rare blend of easy handling, ergonomics and simple, functional luxury.

The Solaris 44 is emblematic of the company’s focus on technology and responsiveness to the needs of crew and passengers. Measuring a modest 44 feet, roughly the size of today’s typical cruising yacht, the Solaris 44 was made for short-handed crew. Designed by Javier Soto Acebal, all the lines, or running rigging, on this vessel lead to only two winches, both within easy reach of the helm. Even in the middle of a stormy night, a single crew member should have little trouble handling the jib and main sheets.

The Solaris 44 offers ample deck space for guests and crew.

When you prepare to choose the specific design of the Solaris 44’s deck layout, you can take advantage of the ample space abaft of the helm—her beam is 13 feet, eight inches all the way back to the transom—by opting for a large stern cabin with wide twin berths. The standard version of the rear deck layout is comprised of a roomy sail locker, large cockpit lockers and an independent storage space for the dinghy or life raft.

The quality and finish of the interior joinery are distinctive features of Solaris, renowned and appreciated among the many Solaris owners crossing the world’s oceans today. The refined selection of hardwoods, combined with the skilled, handmade care in the details, yields an airy, sophisticated, yet warm feeling to both the interior and exterior. The end result, according to Solaris, is a vessel that responds to every anticipated need of the crew.

Every model in the Solaris range, unlike in some other mass production yachts on the market, is built in accordance with the strict rules of the Maxi Ocean Yachts (MOY), even though these rules are intended to pertain only to larger yachts. Solaris meets or beats structural MOY requirements with materials contributing to stiff, solid, stress-resistant construction. The main and structural bulkheads are built of composite with a minimum 1.5-inch thickness and are laminated to the hull, rather than glued together with silicone as is the common practice in many mass-produced boats.

The main bulkhead and principal reinforcement design form what is essentially a “structural cage” bearing the local loads of this yacht, such as the mast, chain plates and keel. Solaris claims, “The yacht is unaffected by any deformation and torsion in all sea and wind conditions.” To achieve this, all joinery is laminated to the hull, contributing to the overall, essentially monocoque composite structure of the cabin and deck.

The chain plates, which in most yachts are fabricated of 316 stainless steel, are made of 28 vacuum-bonded layers of unidirectional and bidirectional fibers. The keel, sustained by a one-inch-thick, 316 stainless steel flange plate, is connected to the hull backing plate by 1.25-inch-thick stainless steel bolts.

solaris yacht indigo

Experience and sea trials have demonstrated that most yachts suffer from the effects of wind and sea, resulting in at least some hull and cabin deformation over time. In some boats, hull and cabin creaking, plus the occasional crack in hull and deck structures, gradually develop, threatening the overall integrity of the vessel’s hull and superstructure. Though usually expected and generally benign, these fissures can lead to an unacceptable degree of failure at some point in a vessel’s lifetime.

For this reason, Galante points out, the priority of Solaris designers and engineers has been developing and perfecting “the non-deformation of the yacht derived through structural continuity,” or in other words, the development of monocoque, or monolithic, structural designs.

Step aboard a Solaris 44 and stroll around the wide, spacious, flush teak deck surrounding a swept, low-profile cabin top, tinted skylights and portlights, dual helms and running rigging arranged neatly and safely out of the way. Also take note of the separate storage area in the transom for the dinghy.

Then step down the companionway and behold a wide, spacious cabin with ample seating and a large table mounted on a pair of highly polished, adjustable stainless mounts. An ample galley with refrigeration and freezer provide enough room for food prep adjacent to the dining area. Long, tinted portlights line both sides of the cabin and allow enough light to cheer up the cabin while controlling the sun’s glare. Walk forward to the vee-berth and behold a large, wide bunk with a lighted bookshelf, a spacious closet and a seat for dressing while underway. Your stroll through the Solaris 44 will reveal a yacht that is neither too big nor too small, easily managed by one or two crew members, large enough for a small family, yet still allowing a cozy feeling for a small crew. n

Solaris Is the World’s Most Expensive Custom Yacht

The Solaris will be the latest addition to the Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich’s fleet of yachts.

Solaris, Roman Abramovich yacht

New photos of  Roman Abramovich ’s US$610 million megayacht have been released and the images are just stunning. Solaris is the billionaire’s brand new toy expected to be delivered to him by this year.

Compared to the Chelsea FC owner’s Eclipse built in 2010, the Solaris is smaller and less expensive but still packs a punch. The  megayacht  is reportedly the world’s most technologically advanced and most expensive custom yacht. That is not a surprise, considering how the vessel is tailor-made for one of the richest men in the world.

  • READ MORE: Top 10 Largest Yachts Around The Globe

Solaris is 460 feet (140 metres) long, with 48 cabins across eight decks and can accommodate a crew of 60 and space for 36 guests. This uber-luxurious megayacht is also one of the world’s safest vessels and this is important for Abramovich and his circle of friends. To that end, Solaris comes with state-of-the-art security, including a radar-controlled missile detection system, bulletproof windows and armoured protection.

Solaris, Roman Abramovich yacht

Abramovich and his guests can enjoy the various amenities available onboard with security measures in place. There is a gym, sauna, jacuzzi and possibly a beauty salon on the gigantic yacht. The Eclipse is known to have a nightclub but for Solaris, it will have an outdoor “beach club” at the aft section of the upper deck. Not to mention, the megayacht will also have its own flotilla of jet-skis and a helipad.

This giant spectacle was a product of German shipyard Lloyd Werft and has been undergoing sea trials from  Barcelona  to Cape D’Ail. It has since berthed in Antibe, on the French Riviera. Currently, it is reported that Abramovic is on vacation off  Croatia  on his Eclipse and the billionaire will most likely board the Solaris when he is back. While not all of us can have this exclusive experience, you can still enjoy it in your country.

Nautor Swan 55, INDIGO

Nautor Swan, Nautor Swan 55 Built 1994 / €545,000, VAT paid

Nautor Swan 55, INDIGO 1 Main

Broker’s Comments

The Nautor Swan 55 is a breakaway design for Nautor. She is a yacht dedicated to cruising with a vast centre cockpit for comfort and safety. Rig and deck plan are designed to facilitate short-handed use. The engine is the most powerful ever installed as standard in a Swan of this size and is situated in a walk-in engine room together with a generator. INDIGO has many refinements for added comfort and ease of handing.

Completed in 1994, INDIGO was shipped from Finland to Palma de Mallorca and commissioned in May 1994. She has since been based in Mallorca and has been utilized for family sailing, both by her original owners. She was sold to the present owner in 2004.

INDIGO is extremely well equipped and in excellent condition. Particular features include a dark blue hull with white cove stripe, hydraulic furling rig, hydraulic winches, hydraulic opening transom with swim ladder/platform, bowthruster, air conditioning, nearly new sail wardrobe and much more.

INDIGO offers a twin berth in the owner cabin, two guest cabins (one double and one twin) and a crew cabin forward. Always skipper maintained to a high standard. Excellent condition.

Owner’s Comments

To cut a long story short:

We actually don’t want to sell our ship INDIGO, affectionately called “Our Old Girl”, but we have sailed for 50 years – first in the north of Europe and then since 2004 with INDIGO mainly in the Balearic Islands/Mediterranean area. Now a different phase of life begins.

When we had time, between business and work, we sailed to romantic bays and discovered Menorca and Ibiza.

We sailed safely with INDIGO all over the Mediterranean and have never regretted buying this beautiful fully equipped Swan yacht. We had so much fun and inspiration that we were sometimes a bit faster than larger boats. INDIGO is a dream to sail.

But now it’s time to say goodbye and hand over INDIGO to younger, sailing-enthusiastic hands.

In 2020 the Solaris 60 will be launched. This model will mark the way of building and conceiving the boat and it will influence the nautical design for the next ten years. Solaris 60 is inspired by the idea of creating a Mini-Maxi, a high performance sailboat, with an overall length of 18.31 m. This length allows to take part in offshore racings, in Mini-Maxi class, including the main event in Porto Cervo that take place every year. The main innovation of the Solaris 60 is the cockpit because of its full width steering wheels. You can steer the boat without the intrusion of the sprayhood. This ensure that the jib’s luff is always completely left in sight while sailing. The width of the steering system allows to lower the lifelines in the aft area and to lift them near the two steps that lead to the side decks. This solution is normally adopted on very big boats, bigger than 140 ft. Moreover, thanks to the width of the wheels even during manoeuvring and navigation, the helmsman will have an unobstructed view without any kind of obstacle. Behind the wheels several seat options are available to steer in different sea conditions, even sitting down. Below deck you will find a typical Solaris layout which includes a galley slightly hidden by two steps forward and for the first time two aft cabins with single or double beds, with a wide porthole facing the interior of the cockpit. The owner’s cabin, situated in the front, is extremely wide and equipped with a wide capacity and with the option of outboard or central bed. Special focus to the crew cabin too, situated in the bow, equipped with a separate bathroom. The tender garage, with longitudinal access, has a minimum intrusion into the aft cabins.
