The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s 2024 sporting season was presented today in Milan at Casa Gessi, moderated by Sky Sports commentator Giovanni Bruno.

Princess Zahra Aga Khan, President of the Board of Directors of the YCCS opened the event, thanking those present and highlighting: “The upcoming sporting season at the YCCS will certainly be an intense one, with regattas scheduled from May to October. This year also marks a significant anniversary: 40 years of collaboration with our longstanding partner Rolex. A strong and solid bond that has seen us share values, ideals, and projects for the creation of a sporting calendar of international relevance over these four decades. Naturally the support of all the other partners, as well as the commitment of the YCCS management and staff, also constitute fundamental elements that have allowed our Club to become a point of reference in the sailing world. We constantly follow the evolution of sailing through each one of our activities and programmes, seeking to adapt to the times in which we live, while keeping traditions alive. Through the sport of sailing we have the opportunity to promote guiding principles, from excellence and innovation, to respect for the sea and the region that hosts us, and support for the next generations.”

The other partners supporting the YCCS are Range Rover and Allianz, while Quantum Sails, Slam, Garmin Marine and Technogym are technical partners.

Following the greeting from the Princess, YCCS Secretary General and Sports Director, Edoardo Recchi, took to the stage for the official presentation of the regatta calendar. Immediately after the RAN 630 – Regata dell’Accademia Navale, scheduled from 24 April to 1 May, where the Club offers its technical support as the fleet rounds the course mark off the Sardinian coast, the 2024 season in Porto Cervo will kick off with the traditional Vela & Golf event (24-26 May), followed by the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta, scheduled from 4 to 8 June.

For the third consecutive year Giorgio Armani, an Italian icon in the world of fashion, will support the YCCS as title sponsor of the event. Building on the success of past editions, the Southern Wind Rendezvous and Trophy will take place as part of the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta, which sees yachts from the Southern Wind yard gather in Porto Cervo for a sailing event characterised by a spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship. A busy month of June will continue with three more regattas slated. The J/24 Class will return to the YCCS for the J/24 European Championship from 10 to 16 June.

Created in the late 1970s by Rod Johnstone, the J/24 one-design is one of the most popular keelboats in the world, with more than 5,000 units estimated to have been produced to date and around 100 fleets active internationally. The J/24 European Championship is a highly anticipated event in the 2024 calendar for the class and the YCCS is delighted to welcome a fleet that has made a significant contribution to the popularity of competitive sailing. The last event dedicated to the J/24 Class in Porto Cervo dates back to 1996, and this season sees another eagerly awaited return with the Grand Soleil Cup, a sailing event organised in collaboration with Cantiere del Pardo with a fleet of around 40 boats expected to attend. The month will conclude with the Smeralda 888 Invitational (28-30 June), followed by the traditional Coppa Europa Smeralda 888 (12-14 July) aboard the Smeralda 888 craft, conceived by renowned yacht designer German Frers especially for the YCCS. From 19-21 July the fourth edition of the YCCS J/70 Sailing Clinic will take place.

During the short break held over July and August, the YCCS Members Championship reserved for Club members (4 August) will take place, preceded on 3 August by the Annual General Meeting at which the new YCCS Commodore will be elected. August will host the Formenton Trophy (20th August) and the Palermo-Porto Cervo-Montecarlo, regattas in which the YCCS offers technical support.

The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup (8-14 September) and the Rolex Swan Cup (15-21 September) will mark a special September. As always, an impressive fleet highlighting the very best of yachting, throughout its history, will gather for the 34th edition of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, organised in collaboration with the International Maxi Association (IMA). In 2023, for example, the J Class and the classic yacht Baruna of 1938 were present alongside recent projects such as Pier Luigi Loro Piana’s My Song, Andrea Recordati’s Bullitt, and the very latest launches such as the Wally 101 Y3K. The inclusion of catamarans in the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup for the first time last year met with great success, and will be repeated for the 2024 edition.

The Rolex Swan Cup is a biennial event celebrating the virtuous partnership between title sponsor Rolex, the Nautor Swan shipyard and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, who are celebrating 40 years of collaboration in 2024. The event attracts a large fleet of yachts representing the entire history of the Nautor Swan family. Taking part in the 22nd edition of the Rolex Swan Cup for the first time will be the ClubSwan 43 and ClubSwan 28 classes, fresh from their launch this year. The Rolex Swan Cup is a benchmark event both internationally and in the YCCS sporting calendar, distinguished by the unique family spirit that has characterised it since its inception.

The season will conclude with the Etchells European Championship, taking place after the Smeralda Cup. The regattas, open to all Etchells boats, are scheduled from 1 to 6 October. Racing for the Smeralda Cup will take place on 2 and 3 October, as a warm-up competition ahead of the European Championship running from 4 to 6 October. The championship will follow the open format, allowing teams from outside of Europe to take part, without competing for the title. The Ethcells is a one-design keelboat class. With an overall length of 30.5 feet (9.3 metres) and measuring 22 feet (6.71 metres) at the waterline, its elegant lines were designed by American Skip Ethcells in the mid-1960s as part of a design competition to produce a new three-person Olympic class boat, although the Soling was chosen in the end.

During the course of the 2024 season, sustainability will remain one of the central themes promoted by the Club. Members, owners and sailors will be made aware of the principles of respect for and preservation of the marine environment contained in the Charta Smeralda, the One Ocean Foundation’s code of ethics. The annual YCCS Clean Beach Day will take place, an event that involves the local community in a morning of beach cleaning accompanied by a lesson from biologists, usually organised on 8 June to mark World Oceans Day. YCCS regattas will also adhere to the Clean Regattas programme drawn up by Sailors for the Sea, an international non-profit organisation that has developed ad hoc certifications for sail racing. In this context, depending on the requirements met on the check list drawn up by the organisation, the certificates issued can range from bronze to platinum level. In 2023, all the major YCCS regattas – the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta, The Nations Trophy – Swan One Design, the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, the Scandinavian Gold Cup and the International 5.5 Metre Class World Championship – were awarded Gold Clean Regattas certification. With the aim of reducing environmental impact, MarkSetBot robotic buoys will once again be used this season, which maintain their position thanks to an electric motor combined with a GPS system, eliminating the need for anchors on the seabed.

At the end of the presentation of the YCCS 2024 sports calendar, moderator Giovanni Bruno introduced a video clip dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the partnership between the YCCS and Rolex. In the short clip, the story of the partnership is narrated by Princess Zahra Aga Khan. Starting from her childhood memories of the quays of Porto Cervo, crowded with sailors from all over the world taking part in the regattas that would make the name of the YCCS and go down in the history books of yachting, the Princess underlines the values shared with Rolex which underpin the longstanding collaboration.

Participants also enjoyed a surprise video message from Italian tennis champion and Rolex testimonee Jannik Sinner, who sent his best wishes for the 2024 sporting season on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Rolex-YCCS partnership. The video was preceded by a speech from the General Manager of Rolex Italy, Stefan Muller, who thanked the YCCS for the rewarding collaboration.

The excitement continued with the presentation of the latest athlete to have joined the ranks of the Young Azzurra programme. Born in Sardinia, Italy in 2006, Maddalena Spanu quickly made a name for herself in the world of board sports. Her sporting adventures began when she took up surfing at just 4 years of age, followed at 6 by a passion for windsurfing.

In 2021, she took up the challenge of Wingfoil racing, quickly emerging as one of the top athletes nationally and internationally. 2023 proved to be a year of success and personal fulfilment for Maddalena, culminating in winning the Wingfoil World Championship in Brasil. Joining Maddalena on the stage were the other two athletes in the Young Azzurra programme, Cesare Barabino (ILCA 7 Class) and Federico Pilloni (reigning European Youth iQFOiL Champion), who talked about their respective competitive programmes for the 2024 season.

The Young Azzurra sports programme was launched in 2020 by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda to support young, emerging talents in Italian sailing, with a focus on equal opportunities. The project was created and will continue to evolve bearing the name and the legacy of Azzurra and sees the YCCS committed to supporting young up-and-coming sailors for the four-year period 2021/2024 who are looking to take part in national, European and World Championships and the Olympic Games. Also attending the YCCS press conference was the President of the Italian Sailing Federation, Francesco Ettorre, who spoke on stage during the presentation of the Young Azzurra athlete Maddalena Spanu, recalling how important these types of programmes are to support young people in their sailing careers.

The world famous Yacht Club Costa Smeralda has just announced the completion of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda Virgin Gorda clubhouse , which is the final chapter in the development of YCCS Virgin Gorda .  This brand new state-of-the-art marina and yacht club is a new chapter for Yacht Club Costa Smeralda , one of the world’s most prestigious yacht clubs, founded by the Aga Khan in Porto Cervo in Costa Smeralda, Sardinia.

For a generation, Costa Smeralda has been famous in the international sailing and yachting worlds for its top level of sailing events and its unparalleled dedication to services and amenities.  The company is hoping that the brand new Costa Smeralda Yacht Club on Virgin Gorda will be the yacht club of choice for anyone sailing or yachting in the Caribbean.

Founder of Porto Cervo’s Yacht Club Costa Smeralda honoured at World Superyacht Awards 2019

By Katia Damborsky   23 May 2019

His Highness the Aga Khan saw the potential of Sardinia ’s Costa Smeralda as a yachting hub in the 1950’s, and the Costa Smeralda Yacht Club was established as a result of his vision.

Businessman, spiritual leader and philanthropist His Highness the Aga Khan was presented with the Legacy Award at the World Superyacht Awards 2019 in London on May 18.

He was honoured for his discovery and development of the Costa Smeralda region, near Porto Cervo , on the north east portion of Sardinia in the sixties.

By introducing the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, he is largely responsible for turning this part of Sardinia into the superyacht magnet it is today.

He wanted the area to become an exclusive destination for elite travellers, while still maintaining its natural beauty and heritage.

His Highness the Aga Khan, founder of Yacht Club Costa Smeralda

Together with Andrè Ardoin, Giuseppe Kerry Mentasti and Luigi Vietti, the Aga Khan established the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda on 1967 as a sporting centre for fellow sailing enthusiasts looking for a slice of Italian paradise.

Since its inception, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda has organised a number of international regattas which it went on to host in later years, making the Aga Khan a worthy winner of this prestigious accolade.

The Aga Khan is also noted for his role in the establishment of the Costa Smeralda Consortium in 1962.

Costa Smeralda's Regatta Circuit

This year, the hotly-anticipated Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2019 will be back at Yacht Club Costa Smeralda on June 3, marking an important date in the calendar for the Mediterranean yacht charter season.

Over five days, thrilling races will take place around La Maddalena archipelago, which sits just a few kilometres from Sardinia. This scattering of islands creates around 50 fast-paced racing circuits, each of which are complemented by excellent sailing conditions and stunning scenery.

Visiting the Emerald Coast

Those on a superyacht vacation in Italy shouldn’t miss the chance to explore Sardinia, and discover everything this idyllic island has to offer.

On the north eastern tip, Porto Cervo has earned a reputation for its sailing, superyachts and luxury living. It regularly pulls in luxury charter yachts with its countless designer fashion houses, upscale restaurants and chic beach clubs.

Further along the coast lies the Costa Smeralda. With a name which translates to ‘Emerald Coast’, this stretch of shoreline is lapped by the Tyrrhenian sea and promises clear, turquoise water, ivory, sun-baked beaches and plenty of calm, secluded anchorages for charter yachts looking for some peace and quiet.

It’s all too easy to understand why his Highness the Aga Khan fell in love with this Sardinian stretch of coastline all those years ago, and why his legacy will live on as Costa Smeralda continues to delight those exploring on a  West Mediterranean private yacht charter .

Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s Future Still in Limbo!

August 11th, 2019

Yacht Club Costa Smeralda Virgin Gorda

  • Facebook Page
  • Visit Website

For those anxious for an update on Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) information about what is happening with the rebuild and when the resort be operational has been extremely hard to come by. Here are four things we know or have heard to date:

1 – No Website Infomation: The YCCS website only offers the following message, “We apologize for any inconvenience, however due to damage caused by Hurricane Irma, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda Virgin Gorda will remain closed until further notice.”

2 – No Communication: They last posted on Facebook on December 24, 2017 after Irma.

3 – No Evidence of Rebuilding: The photo above taken in late March, 2019 shows no evidence of any progress in the rebuilding as the YCCS Clubhouse looks exactly the same as it does in the post Irma photo below. More importantly the docks are gone!

4 – Projected Opening Date: According to a December 24, 2018 article in the BVI News no exact date was given for the re-opening of YCCS. In the article, Premier Dr D Orlando Smith was quoted as saying, “Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, more commonly known as YCCS, are also slated to resume operations shortly.” This statement leaves us very confused.

BVI Traveller will continue to keep you updated as more news becomes available.

5 – The Good News: In case you forgot what YCCS looked like immediately after Irma, we found the photo below. The resort has certainly come along way since then.

The Scourge of Pollution, Even at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda

costa esmeralda yacht club

By John Clarke

  • Aug. 30, 2018

With 50 years behind it, the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, home to some of the most luxurious big-boat sailing in the world, is looking to the future with mixed emotions because of increased ocean pollution that has altered the water around the club.

When it started with a handful of members, the club was just a dock without a clubhouse. The impact of pollution was minimal.

“If you were around in the 1960s there, it was a sort of paradise,” Riccardo Bonadeo, the club commodore, said. “But now, even the color of the water is not the same. The color of the water comes from the land and what is below the water. All the pollution on the land is brought by the river to the sea. They all create a change in the water that is unbelievable. Now, it’s impossible to find a beach or place to land without seeing a plastic bottle or a chair.”

The club has grown since its founding, adding a glamorous seaside clubhouse to match its equally glamorous membership. Along the way, the once-pristine shoreline and azure waters surrounding the club have not been immune from marine pollution around Porto Cervo in Sardinia.

As host to the annual Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, along with the Swan Cup, the club has a track record of courting top-shelf sponsors to its sailing events for its well-heeled members. It’s exclusive and rarefied even by sailing standards. But club organizers have realized that such privilege comes with a responsibility to safeguard the ocean.

“We all saw what happened in Rio at the Olympics; that was a wake-up call,” Jan Pachner, the club secretary, said about Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro’s polluted Olympic sailing venue. “We are already so late in the game, unfortunately. It should have come a decade ago. But better late than never, right?”

So the club is fighting back. It established a foundation last year that consulted with marine biologists and scientists to advise them on steps to take to combat pollution. The result is the Charta Smeralda, a strictly enforced list of 10 rules for members to follow, including avoiding leaks while refueling, reducing energy consumption and refraining from the use of disposable plastic.

That includes water bottles, which quickly add up when you host thousands of crew, members and guests for a windy week under the sun. During the club’s sailing regattas, crew and spectators, including members and their guests, are instructed on the plastic ban Visitors are also issued reusable bottles and instructed to refill them each time they become empty.

“We made an obligation,” Bonadeo said. “All of the people who are coming must follow our rules. It’s an effort that is practical, concrete and positive in that sense.”

Pachner said it’s a start.

“Of course you see a lot of bottles out there, but what is really shocking is seeing plastic toys from 30 or 40 years ago. You realize how long it takes for this to break down, or if it does at all,” he said.

Pachner said it seemed to be working.

“I think it’s small steps,” he said. “But we have some pretty powerful names in the club who run big companies. This could be more widely embraced and really have an effect.”

He also pointed out that Princess Zahra Aga Khan, daughter of the Aga Khan, the club founder, had embraced the efforts. “She’s very pushy on environmental issues,” he said.

“It should be super natural for a yacht club to be a protector of the oceans and the environment; it’s your recreational habitat,” Pachner said.

It’s personal for the club’s commodore. During the 1979 Admiral’s Cup, Bonadeo’s boat hit a large sheath of plastic that made the crew heave to.

“We passed it and finished, but I took note,” he said. “Years later we were doing another Atlantic crossing with a family, this time in the Caribbean. Much different conditions. In the middle of nowhere, we come up on this black bag of rubbish. I realized we had to do something for the gratitude for the sea and the privilege of this club. Now, the ocean needs a call to action; otherwise it will all be destroyed.

“It’s created a lot of emotion,” Bonadeo said. “First of all, it’s really sad. It’s angering, and it’s frustrating. What is going on in the future if we can’t stop this? We have so much plastic. In a very short period of time we will have much more plastic than fish in the water. This is what experts say. Everybody needs to know that.”

Self-indulgence on the Costa Smeralda

By Tabitha Joyce

Blu Mediterraneo Spa at Yacht Club Costa Smeralda Sardinia

The Costa Smeralda is still the Italian getaway of the stars and the mega-rich, with superyacht regattas drawing the crowds every April. The Blu Mediterraneo Spa , a huge attraction every season, is the only ticket into the members-only club itself. And now there's fresh appeal, with Acqua di Parma 's new Italian Resort skincare collection. The utterly Italian brand known for its delicious smells and glamorous image absolutely typifies this place, alongside swathes of Loro Piana cashmere and handsome boys with nut-brown tans climbing the rigging.

One of just two Acqua di Parma spas in the world, this gloriously chic set-up has cool whitewashed walls lined with sparkling mosaic tiles. The signature Mediterranean Oxygenating Complex is fantastic, a blend of essential oils and minerals that help the native flora thrive against the wind, sun and salt. The treatment to go for is the Detoxifying Body Therapy : two hours of deep exfoliation and massage that will leave tired skin buffed and beaming. Book in at least a week in advance at the height of summer when the jet-set roll into town. The feel-good creams and scrubs will help you hang on to that holiday glow for longer, and the fragrance combination - bergamot, cypress and sea accord - still evokes the scent of the Med even once you're home. Post-spa, head for an ice-cold limoncello on the terrace and keep your eyes peeled for George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Jay Z.

Coordinates of elektrostal in degrees and decimal minutes, utm coordinates of elektrostal, geographic coordinate systems.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
