The best pictures of Koru

In 2022, the 125.8-metre sailing yacht Koru made history when she hit the water at Oceanco ’s Alblasserdam facilities. Now successfully delivered, she is the flagship of the Oceanco fleet and the largest Dutch-built yacht in the world.

BOAT rounds up the best pictures of the three-masted sailing yacht owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos...

Koru unable to dock in Florida

Koru arrived at Port Everglades, Florida in November 2023 following a months-long Mediterranean cruise that included stopovers in Dubrovnik, Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer and Calabria (according to BOATPro ). The sailing yacht was too large to anchor in the nearby marina, which has a maximum capacity of 121.9 metres. She was photographed instead docking next to a 297-metre cruise ship named Rhapsody of the Seas .

Koru's helicopter landing

Last summer, Koru was spotted in the French Riveria alongside her 75-metre support vessel Abeona . Delivered by Damen Yachting two months before the mothership, Abeona is equipped with a helipad and hangar for a D14 value helicopter– which is clearly being put to good use. Accommodation is for up to 45 people onboard Bezos' support vessel, including crew, guests and other specialist staff.

Koru in Portofino

Koru and Abeona also travelled to Portofino in the summer of 2023, with both Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez sighted enjoying lunch and taking photographs while on board.

Koru's figurehead

Throughout construction, it was difficult to get a glimpse of the details on board Koru ; but once handed over, all of her traditional features could be admired up close. As well as the intricate gold paintwork and scarlet bootstripe, the yacht also features an elaborate figurehead made of polished wood. The woman is wearing a necklace with a symbol in the pendant, which some have speculated could be the Māori symbol meaning "koru".

Koru in front of Palma Cathedral

After delivery, the schooner spent some time enjoying the waters of Mallorca. The Balearic hotspot is a magnet for superyachts during the Mediterranean season, but Koru had the quiet anchorage largely to herself after leaving the Oceanco shipyard. Her classic lines could be appreciated in all of their glory against the backdrop of Palma Cathedral.

Koru delivered to Mallorca

In April 2023. Koru was delivered and undertook her maiden voyage from the Netherlands to Gibraltar. She then headed onwards to Palma, giving the world a first glimpse of her cascading aft decks, mighty masts and elaborate aft deck pool arrangement. She was flying solo in Mallorca, but was later joined by support vessel Abeona .

Koru in Gibraltar

Following her successful sea trials in Rotterdam, Koru embarked on journey to Palma, Mallorca that involved an overnight anchorage in Gibraltar. The sailing yacht was sighted passing through the Strait of Gibraltar a second time on her cross-continental journey from the Mediterranean to the USA in November 2023.

Koru on sea trials

Koru was spotted departing from Rotterdam in the early morning light of February 13 to begin sea trials. The 125.8-metre Oceanco set sail across the North Sea to put her performance to the test after hitting the water for the first time in August 2022. The traditional three-masted schooner yacht has a midnight blue hull, traditional canoe stern and the unique addition of a chair at the very tip of the bowsprit. Her name represents the idea of life’s perpetual movement and is a Māori word closely related to that of an unfurling leaf.

Koru with her masts stepped

The yacht was seen for the first time in her final form on the dock in the Port of Rotterdam. Her trio of masts was stepped here to avoid having to dismantle any bridges to allow the Oceanco giant yacht to pass under. The maximum height of the bridge is 70 metres; the masts on Koru are thought to measure between 65 and 85 metres. The first images of Koru indicate the yacht will have plenty of features for her owner to enjoy, including an aft deck pool and a large, uncluttered sundeck.

Koru launched

The 125.8-metre yacht was moved from Oceanco’s primary facilities at the crack of dawn to enter the final stages of construction. The hull was transported via Dordrecht and Spijkenisse (Oude Maas), and her masts were transported separately via the slightly shorter Rotterdam Centre (Nieuwe Maas).

Koru moves through the Dutch canals

Before she hit the water, the hull of Koru was loaded onto a transport vessel and she made the journey through the Dutch canals for further construction work. The yacht was captured against the backdrop of the quaint Dutch countryside, revealing her classic-looking lines and long rows of windows.

Koru from a bird's eye view

As she was wheeled out of the shed into the light of day, yacht-spotters were able to get their first proper aerial shot of the yacht, without her masts.

Koru rolls out of the shed

When Oceanco completed the work on the hull, the yacht was rolled out of the shed to reveal a crisp navy hull and white superstructure. Koru ’s exterior design immediately drew a comparison to Lürssen’s 93-metre sailing yacht Eos , which was designed by US-based Langan Design . This was the world’s first sighting of the already iconic superyacht.

Jeff Bezos’ New Yacht Is Finally Ready to Set Sail

Amazon’s founder has been spotted on Koru, a massive schooner with a design that evokes the golden age of sailing in the early 20th century.

Koru, a very large sailboat with three masts and a dark navy hull, sails on a calm blue sea.

By Kevin Koenig

Just in time for the high season of yachting in the Mediterranean, when multimillion-dollar megayachts descend on ports like Monte Carlo and St. Tropez, Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has been photographed with his partner Lauren Sánchez on his new boat, Koru, off the coast of Spain.

Mr. Bezos’ vessel is a sailing yacht, a departure from the diesel-powered, floating palaces popular with other billionaires. But it is still massive. At 417 feet, Koru is the world’s largest sailing yacht, according to Boat International , and it cost an estimated $500 million to build, Bloomberg reported . (Parsifal III, the boat featured on Bravo’s reality series “Below Deck Sailing Yacht,” is 177 feet long — less than half the length of Koru — and cost $18 million , according to the website SuperYachtFan.)

A spokesperson for Mr. Bezos did not comment for this article; neither did Oceanco, Koru’s builder. Here is what to know about the boat.

For traditionalists, Koru is refreshing. At a time when yacht design skews outrageous — see the lizardlike, 262-foot Artefact or the otherworldly 463-foot Yas — Koru stands out as a schooner, a sailing vessel with two or more masts. Photos reveal a large sailboat with three masts, an on-deck pool and a voluptuous mermaid on the bow, that bears a resemblance to Ms. Sánchez. But otherwise, the sleek, classic lines suggest the patrician age of yachting in the early 20th century, said Robert B. MacKay, author of “The Golden Age of Newport Yachting: Between the Wars.”

“With the clipper bow and the dark hull and the masts,” Mr. MacKay said, referring to Koru’s concave, pointy forward section, “it reminds me of a boat built in 1930 for J.P. Morgan Jr., Corsair IV. It is almost like a reincarnation. It’s certainly at odds with the stuff the oligarchs are building — those look like bloated Clorox bottles.”

Compared with the world’s very largest motor yachts — built for sheer size and the accompanying bragging rights — Koru could almost be considered quaint. Azzam, one of the world’s largest motor yachts, is nearly 200 feet longer.

The Experience

Koru will be propelled primarily by the wind. “Sailboats are usually greener than most powerboats,” said Don Anderson, a former captain of M5 , the world’s largest single-masted sailboat, at 256 feet. “I’d like to think that Koru will be one of the most ecological yachts out there, with its sails and also with the technology that will be aboard.”

“When you’re on a sailboat, you’re more in touch with the wind and the waves than on a powerboat,” he continued. “You’re more susceptible to the elements, too. But you can leave California, and once you get past the Catalinas you can basically surf downwind all the way to Hawaii. All you need to do is run with the waves.”

Mr. Bezos has been a guest on similar boats, according to Bloomberg: In 2019, he was spotted on Eos , a 305-foot sailing yacht owned by Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg.

Bill Tripp, a Connecticut-based naval architect, said the appeal of this type of boat is clear: “When you are on a powerboat, you ask, ‘Are we there yet?’ and on a sailboat, you’re enjoying the ride and the ocean so much that you don’t ask that question.”

Koru will be trailed by Abeona, a 246-foot support vessel. Superyachts often have support vessels following along behind them. These “shadows,” as they are colloquially known, are for the “toys” — the ATVs, supercars, seaplanes, motorcycles, smaller boats, scuba gear, personal submarines and even helicopters that pleasure boaters might bring on a trip. According to its builder, this model of boat can carry these gadgets along with dozens of crew members. (Ms. Sanchez flies helicopters, and the couple was recently photographed taking a helicopter to board Abeona and then Koru.)

Abeona, a motor yacht, will have enough range to follow Koru from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean — a common course for yachts — on a single tank of gas.

The Kerfuffle

Koru set off a controversy last year — before it was even completed — in a face-off with the Dutch city of Rotterdam. The boat was built at Oceanco’s facility in Alblasserdam, the Netherlands, and needed to pass the historic Koningshaven Bridge, known as “De Hef,” in Rotterdam, to undergo testing in the North Sea.

When the city announced it would dismantle the bridge to allow the boat and its mainmast — an estimated 230 feet tall — to pass through unscathed, locals were angry. They planned a protest to throw eggs at the yacht as it cruised by. In the end, the bridge was not taken apart, and the yacht was towed to a different location to have its masts attached.

Koru is Maori for “coil” or “loop” and refers to the unfurling of a fern frond. The koru design is common in traditional Maori art, where it symbolizes new life, growth and peace. Mr. Bezos included a photo of a koru frond in an Instagram post on Jan. 1, 2022.

Brad Stone, who was the first to report on Koru, in his 2021 book “Amazon Unbound: Jeff Bezos and the Invention of a Global Empire,” said the name was “consistent with where we see him today.”

“He is no longer this single-minded tech guy,” Mr. Stone said. “He’s in media and Hollywood and has a new relationship.”

In the world of luxury yachting, few names command as much attention as Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon and one of the richest individuals on the planet.

Bezos’ affinity for the sea and his penchant for exploration have materialized in the form of the breathtaking sailing yacht KORU and its companion, the support vessel ABEONA.

Commissioned from renowned shipbuilders Oceanco and Damen Yachting, respectively, these vessels are not only a testament to Bezos’ wealth but also a celebration of Māori culture and innovation in yacht design.

The choice of the name “KORU” for the yacht holds deep significance. In Māori culture, the koru symbolizes new beginnings, growth, and the cycle of life.

It is often represented as an unfolding fern frond, embodying the concepts of renewal and continuous movement. Jeff Bezos, in an Instagram post , highlighted the symbolism behind the name, showcasing his embrace of growth, rebirth, and mindfulness.

Built by Damen Yachting, ABEONA serves as the perfect adjunct to the KORU yacht. This custom-built vessel carries all the toys, tenders, and equipment needed to enhance the yachting experience.

With a large helicopter hangar and the capacity to accommodate 45 staff, crew, and guests, ABEONA stands as an indispensable asset to the main yacht.

The Visionary Behind the Vessels: Jeff Bezos

With a staggering net worth of $160 billion, Jeff Bezos is not only a pioneer in the world of e-commerce but also a visionary with a passion for the sea.

The commissioning of the KORU yacht and the ABEONA support vessel reflects Bezos’ love for exploration and his desire to embrace the vastness of the ocean.

Bezos’ affinity for the sea is also reflected in his ownership of a Gulfstream G650ER private jet, showcasing his penchant for luxury both in the air and on the water.

The yacht has also been at the center of massive, worldwide controversy. Back in February 2022, Oceanco requested that a centuries-old bridge in the port city of Rotterdam be partially dismantled in order to get the behemoth out and onto the high seas. The masts, which are the same height as the Great Pyramid of Giza, simply exceeded the bridge’s 131-foot clearance and thus prevented Koru from passing under. Rotterdammers were none too pleased and threatened to pelt the yacht with rotten eggs . The request was subsequently denied, and the yacht was instead discreetly towed through Rotterdam without its mast.

The designers behind the yacht’s interior and exterior are yet to be named, but it’s clear that she’s a timeless and elegant cruiser. Koru , which is a Māori for “new beginnings,” features a sleek black hull and white superstructure. She also sports a large pool on the aft deck and a number of plush alfresco lounges.

The epic design isn’t able to accommodate a helicopter, however, as the soaring masts make it too unsafe to land. As a result, Bezos commissioned a second yacht to hold his toys and tenders. Christened Wingman, the custom 246-footer is Damen’s largest support vessel to date. It’s a good match for monumental Koru , then.

  • 75m (247ft) support vessel ABEONA
  • Innovative kinetic energy recovery system to covert wave-induced motion for sustainable cruising
Sailing yacht KORU offers the last word in innovative design coupled with a wealth of luxurious amenities for the very best sailing experience for her guests.

The 127m (416'8") Oceanco sailing yacht KORU (previously known as Y721) represents one of the largest sailing yachts in the world, with an impressive internal volume of 3,300 GT and wealth of luxurious accommodation and amenities.

Commissioned by entrepreneur and Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos, the 3-masted schooner KORU, known throughout the build as Project Y721 replaces Oceanco’s BLACK PEARL  for second place in the world's largest sailing yacht rankings behind Nobiskrug's 143m (469ft)  sailing yacht A , and operates under the Cayman Islands' flag.

Exterior Design

Reportedly taking its design cues from the 93-meter Lurssen sail yacht EOS, the yacht features a midnight-blue hull with an elongated bowsprit and traditional canoe stern, with classic lines reminiscent of some of the finest schooners in the world. As expected from a tech entrepreneur, known for pushing boundaries and driving innovation, sailing yacht KORU is trialing a prototype for a new kinetic energy recovery system. This is based on a conversion of wave induced motion, heave, pitch and roll into electric energy, with initial tests showing early promise. With a nod to her green credentials, this will provide an additional power source for the yacht allowing for more enhanced sustainable cruising.

Interior Design

Oceanco's newest yacht is understood to have an internal volume of 3,300 GT and will undoubtedly offer a wealth of luxurious accommodation and amenities. Sailing yacht KORU benefits from full-length windows across her superstructure allowing plenty of light to infuse her elegant interiors.

Guest Accommodation

With her wide beam the 127-meter sailing yacht KORU offers generous accommodation for her guests, equipped with the finest linens and state-of-the-art technology.

Onboard Comfort & Entertainment

Sailing yacht KORU is served by the 75-meter (247ft) Damen support vessel ABEONA  (ex-Wingman). This yacht will be equipped with KORU's larger toys, rumored to include a submarine for thrilling excursions beneath the waves a la Jules Verne, plus a helicopter and landing pad. She is also believed to house an array of PWCs, as well as a speed boat and a luxury car, as well as providing accommodation for additional crew and staff.

Although we have little information about the yacht's features, we do know that she will have an aft dip pool on her main deck, along with a further Jacuzzi on her sundeck and variety of alfresco social spaces. Pictures show that she also has a crow's nest attached to her central mast, offering lofty panoramic views for her more adventurous guests.

Access to sailing yacht KORU will be via folding side passerelles, discreetly hidden in the yacht's hull on either side. Rescue and work tender launches will likely take place further forward, as per regulations. Recent pictures show a large hatch opening in her lower deck aft, which may contain further tenders and toys, but may also double as a beach club.

Performance & Range

KORU is a 3,300 GT sailing yacht, built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, with teak decks. She was built to Lloyds Register ✠ 100A1 SSC Yacht Mono, G6, ECO(IHM) ✠ LMC UMS classification society rules.

Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly gifted himself a $300 million megayacht, dubbed “Launchpad,” ahead of his 40th birthday.

The staggering 387-foot-long vessel was seen floating at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after arriving at its berth earlier this week, The Sun reported Thursday.

The multi-layered luxury ship’s sleek exterior was designed by Espen Øino International and boasts a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure, according to SuperYacht Times.

Reportedly ranking as the 45th largest yacht in the world, the interiors are just as aesthetically pleasing and reportedly executed by Zuretti Interior Design company, a France-based company specializing in unique and custom yacht design.

The breathtakingly beautiful floater stands out with a navy blue theme matching an American flag perched proudly on its wood-paneled stern.

There are several outdoor areas where the social media maven will be able to relax with his family and the indoor levels feature glass paneling allowing for tons of natural light.

There also appears to be a helipad perfect for whenever the Facebook co-founder wants to travel to his vessel by air.

The Feadship-built yacht, built in 2022, can comfortably fit 24 guests aboard, requires a crew of 48, and is said to cost $30 million a year for upkeep and usage, according to Superyachtfan.com .

Boatworld insiders have been buzzing with speculation that Zuckerberg is the owner of the newly minted mega-cruise ever since it made its main voyage from the Netherlands last week.

The tech titan was spotted touring the Russian-commissioned megayacht in early March, though the impressive boat didn’t arrive stateside until this week due to sanctions, according to The Sun.

The website reported that Zuckerberg purchased the pricey yacht – along with its own $30 million partner boat — most likely as an early 40th birthday present to himself.

The boat reportedly traveled to Florida after being granted special permission to be imported just weeks ahead of Zuckerberg’s birthday on May 14.

Zuckerberg’s yacht is just 30 feet shorter than the length of fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos’ 417-foot megayacht Koru, which the Amazon boss snagged for a whopping $500 million.

Zuckerberg’s rep did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.

The superyacht world is speculating that Mark Zuckerberg just bought this 118-meter boat

  • The 118-meter superyacht Launchpad made her maiden voyage last week.
  • The yacht world is speculating that her owner is Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
  • Here's what we know about the luxury vessel.

Insider Today

In the world of superyachts , privacy is the most valuable asset. It can be next to impossible to discern the details of a superyacht transaction — and that's particularly true if the vessel in question is worth nine figures.

Yet some in the boat blogging world are speculating that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is the new owner of Launchpad, a megayacht currently moored in Fort Lauderdale, Florida after she made her maiden voyage from Gibraltar to St Maarten last week. Launchpad clocks in at 118 meters long, about nine meters shorter than Jeff Bezos' superyacht Koru .

The transaction could not be confirmed, with yacht world insiders declining to share what they know and representatives for Zuckerberg not responding to a request for comment from Business Insider. In the past, reports about Zuckerberg owning superyacht Ulysses have proven false.

Related stories

"It is Feadship's standard policy to never divulge any information about our yachts with reference to ownership, costs, or delivery, etc," Feadship, the ship's builder, wrote to BI. "Whether it is an 18-meter Feadship from the 1960s or a 118-meter Feadship from the 21st century, we do not share private information."

But Zuckerberg's name has been connected to Launchpad for a few months now, beginning in December when reports swirled that he visited Feadship's shipyard in the Netherlands.

Then, earlier in March, yachting bloggers like eSysman SuperYachts and Autoevolution started speculating that he officially snagged the boat, originally built for a sanctioned Russian businessman, at a $300 million price tag. (While that's a seemingly huge amount, it's still less than 0.2% of Zuckerberg's $177 billion net worth.)

Another clue that might point to US ownership is that the yacht bears the flag of the Marshall Islands, a US territory and commonplace for American buyers to register their ships, according to public marine tracking.

If Zuckerberg were to have bought Launchpad, he would join a cohort of superyacht-owning tech billionaires . Along with Bezos, the likes of Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison and Google cofounders Sergey Brin and Larry Page have purchased impressive boats with even more impressive amenities.

SuperYacht Times , an industry publication and intelligence platform, has some of the best images of the yacht. Photos show a swimming pool on her main deck and a large helipad.

While less is known of the interior, a vessel of her size can likely sleep dozens of guests and crew and may have amenities like an expansive gym where Zuckerberg could practice his jiu-jitsu or a spa with a massage area. We suspect there's also space for plenty of toys — which could include his viral hydrofoil foil .

THE BATTLE OF VORONEZH

By STRATEGICUS

LTHOUGH the Germans claimed the capture of Voronezh on July 7th it has not fallen as I write. More and more troops ave been poured into the bridgehead across the Don. It has been tared that some 800 tanks have been engaged upon the small sector thich contains the city, and that the attempt to enter it is being ade with flame-throwers and covered by a smoke screen. What- ver the detail, it is clear that the attack is being made by very heavy • ices, and it is only the heroic resistance of the Russians that has

far preserved the city from capture. The Germans cannot nnounce any news of the progress of this important battle because ey have so long ago announced the capture of Voronezh ; but om its persistence and the concentration of the forces something • ay be learned of the enemy plan.

It is not, of course, only in the immediate neighbourhood of oronezh that the Russians have attempted to save it. There have • een repeated attacks at Orel ; and it is from the Germans that we earn that the Russians succeeded in penetrating the defences, ough they call such breaches "local," and insist that the gaps have • en "sealed off" and "cleared up." It is not a consistent account, nd it may be assumed that the penetrations have been far from egligible. But they have not been sufficiently grave to arrest the erman advance. They seem scarcely to have weakened it. There ave been other Russian attacks nearer to the Voronezh bridgehead ;

• ut, in spite even of these, the news of fresh forces being thrown cross the river in this area cannot be doubted. Indeed, it seems to

evident that the Germans want the city as much as the Russians sh to deny it to them.

Voronezh itself lies in a sort of cup which the Voronezh makes ith the Don. The cup is no more than ten miles deep, and the ty, lying on the tributary, only some five miles from the Don, uards the road and railway. The main road runs north and then est to Yelets, which was the most easterly point reached by the ermans in their autumn offensive. The railway runs east and then oath to the junction of Gryazi, some 6o miles distant, where the talinograd line enters it. Only 35 miles farther north is the unction of Kozlov for the line from Saratov. It is in these facts pparently that one must read the desperate attempts of the Germans o capture the city ; and it reflects a possibility that must have • curred to the minds of the Russian Staff. Already the Germans ave cut the direct communications between the southern and the orthem army groups. If they could press up the railway line as at as Gryazi, they would have cut the roundabout, indirect com- unications with the south. The central and northern group of rmies, now condemned to live on their local stocks of oil with the ddition of the small supplies that could be brought up from Stalino- ad, would then find that source cut off.

In fact, it is a progressive isolation that threatens the main • ussian armies ; and it is far from improbable that the Germans, ho are subject to lapses into the grandiose, may have again fallen • ack upon the idea of attempting to envelop the central group of nnies. The northern threat has been developing for some time, rom the direction of Kalinin and Rzhev, though, as far as one can • scover, without conspicuous success. But this new threat from the th-east, distant and merely potential at the moment, might be ursed into a very dangerous actuality. The Germans have from. e first shown a tendency to oscillate between the destruction of the ssian armies—which, of course, must be the final end of all • itary operations—and the capture of places, between the thing ignifying and the thing signified.

The capture of Voronezh would not necessarily mean a very great eat ; but the Germans, and the Russians, know the value of nodal centres. At this moment everyone can see that the retention of such places as Kursk and Kharkov, of Rzhev and Vyasma, was a point of pital importance in the German plans. They proved the foci of a esistance that could not be broken ; and when the war is no more • n a bitter memory some inquiry may be made into the different caning of the defensive in German and Russian hands. Was it

merely the constitutional dislike of work that may be unnecessary that made the Russian defensive yield more easily than the German? That must be left to the, perhaps distant, future to disclose_ But at least it can now be realised that it is necessary in war to hold some places to the death. Either for their role in a scheme of mutual support or as themselves commanding centres of communications, they may be of cardinal importance to national defence. There should be an element of rigidity even in the elastic defence.

It is not necessary to conclude that if Voronezh falls all the possible implications suggested may become actualities. The Russians have a power of resistance second to none. They have a firm and enlightened strategical doctrine. They have great tactical skill. Their infantry have an unsurpassed fame as shock absorbers. They have a fine and numerous artillery, good tanks, and daring airmen provided with skilfully designed aircraft. They will do their best, and it is no mean best at the worst, to check the exploitation of a success at Voronezh. But it is of moment that there should on this front be such an amazingly heavy attack and this brilliant defence ; and it tends to give ground to the sugges- tion that the main blow may yet be at the Russian armies, although the trend of the offensive appears to point to the south-east. The mobility and opportunism that marks the modern tactics of attack must have its reflection in strategy, and the drive which was started towards the east may be turned into the ancillary, instead of the principal, end.

The eastward advance, however, has achieved a remarkable success. The Germans are across the Moscow-Rostov railway on a front of perhaps too miles. Lisichansk has been evacuated, and the troops have withdrawn to new positions. Where these are sited it is impossible to say. But the Moscow wireless was stating, on Tuesday, that the Germans are past Millerovo, which is about 90 miles to the east of Lisichansk, on the Moscow-Rostov railway. Millerovo, however, is some miles nearer Rostov than Tagenrog ; and it is obvious that here the manoeuvring room in front of important centres has shrunk very considerably. Some distance to the north the Germans are reported to be on the Don at Boguchar. Some correspondents have even stated that they are following the course of the Don, though that would seem to be an unnecessary proceeding unless they are attempting to use it as a protective flank for their march to the east. Somewhere about this area the Russians have presumably a defensive line, though at present they are allowing the enemy to make his way into the easy-going but rich agricultural country of the Don basin.

The spectacle of this apparently irresistible advance is far from encouraging ; but it must be taken with the splendid defence of the Voronezh pivot. It looks, in fact, much more like deliberation than drift. Certainly this is not a country remarkable for its com- munications, and such as there are, towards the great eastern bend of the Don, must be at the service of the Russians rather than the Germans. Communications and supply remain conditioning factors of the campaign. The German offensives have for this reason hitherto passed their peak after the tenth day, and in about three weeks tended to run down. By the end of the week, on this precedent, the impetus should begin to disappear, and the defence come to its own. Every yard appears to be challenged, and the losses inflicted are exemplary. The Russians are fighting with their customary weapons—space and stolid resistance.

Of their handicaps some are obvious, others less evident but perhaps more important. The severance of the main communica- tions between the army groups weakens both, but mainly the central. The oil, which can only find its way to the north in trickles, if at all, may tend in the end to be decisive. It is also clear that they have had to face a very heavy concentration of men and material on positions which in the main have no natural strength. They have had to fight against the new tactical method of close support given by the Luftwaffe on the battlefield. This new development, seen at its best in the Egyptian battlefield, can

' hardly fail to have had its effect upon the Russian defence. But ; probably their greatest weakness lies in the region of politics and moral. They are at present suffering the greatest attack delivered by the Germans since the autumn in apparent isolation.

It is a thousand pities that during this critical test the Allies appear to be more quiescent than usual. They appear, in fact, I to be doing nothing at all that directly advantages Russia ; and in the region of politics and moral it is not the real but what seems ' real that counts. The enemy is striking his hardest blows against the northern communications with the Allies. He is driving across the Don with the threat of cutting these in the south. On several !occasions he has attempted an encirclement within a wider envelop- ment, and now with the threat to the main armies he is threatening to envelop the whole country. It needs cool heads and stout hearts to meet movements of that character, and the long-drawn-out battle of Voronezh suggests that the Russian Staff are meeting the threat of the moment in that way. The German purpose, according to I Goebbels, is "Victory at any price." There is much that such a mind can contrive ; but the German military verdict on the last war was that the army was committed to tasks beyond its power. Germany plagiarises everyone, even herself.

History of Voronezh

16th century.

In 1585 Tsar Feodor I ordered the construction of a fortress on the River Voronezh to protect Russia from Crimean and Nogai Tatar raids. The fortress was completed in 1586 and this year is considered the official year of Voronezh's foundation, even though it may have existed as a settlement even as far back as the 12th century. Just a few years later in 1590 the fortress was burned to the ground during a Cossack-Cherkas raid. The fortress was reconstructed in 1594 .

17th Century

Time of troubles.

In 1605 Voronezh supported the cause of the First False Dmitri and even after his death in 1606 the city refused to recognise Vasily Shuisky as tsar. In 1610 Voronezh gave its support to the Second False Dmitry, who set up a refuge in the city although was unable to take advantage of it. In 1613 Ivan Zarutsky and his Cossacks, allies of Poland-Lithuania, retreated to Voronezh but a division of troops in the city blocked his route, defeated him in battle and forced him to retreat south to Astrakhan .

Bishop Mitrofan of Voronezh

Depiction of Bishop Mitrofan of Voronezh with Peter the Great

In 1681 the Voronezh Eparchy was established from the Ryazan Eparchy and its first bishop - Bishop Mitrofan - took up office in 1682 who set about establishing the authority of the Orthodox Church in this area of Cossacks, Old-Believers and outlaws. Between 1684 and 1692 a new cathedral was built for the eparchy - the Annunciation Cathedral - upon the initiative of Bishop Mitrofan. Bishop Mitrofan was acquainted with Peter the Great and on one occasion Peter requested the presence of Mitrofan. Upon seeing the pagan statues that adorned Peter's Voronezh residence, Mitrofan returned home. Peter was so angry that Mitrofan had disobeyed him that he ordered he present himself at once or face execution. Nevertheless Mitrofan refused to attend until the pagan idols were removed and he waited in his chambers expecting to be arrested. However surprisingly it was Peter that uncharacteristically backed down, so impressed was he by Mitrofan's conviction. Mitrofan died in 1703 .

18th Century

Shipbuilding.

Engraving of Voronezh in the 18th Century

After Russia's First Campaign against Azov in 1695 it became apparent that the campaign was unsuccessful due to Russia's lack of a naval fleet and so Peter the Great set about to rectify this. Peter decided to establish an admiralty wharf in Voronezh to build his new fleet and shipbuilding began in 1696 . Thanks to the new fleet Russia was successful in the Second Azov Campaign in the winter of 1696 . The success cemented Peter's ambition for Russia to become a naval power. Between 1696 and 1722 Peter visited Voronezh 13 times to oversee the shipbuilding and in total spend over 500 days there, making it the de facto capital whilst there. In 1698 the first Russian ship of the line - the Goto Predestinatsia - was completed at the Voronezh Admiralty Wharf.

Reform and Redevelopment

Engraving of Voronezh in the 19th century by Vasily Timm

Under Peter the Great's administrative reforms of 1708 Voronezh became the centre of the Voronezh Province of the Azov Governorate. From 1715 onwards Voronezh was the centre of the Azov Governorate although it was only renamed the Voronezh Governorate in 1725 . After several fires destroyed much of the city, Catherine the Great adopted in 1774 a new regulated city plan for the redevelopment of Voronezh. In 1781 a coat of arms was adopted depicting a black eagle on a yellow background and a silver jug spilling silver water down a golden hill on a red background.

19th Century

St mitrofan of voronezh.

Engraving of the internment of the relics of St Mitrofan of Voronezh

In 1832 it was decided to canonise the 17th century Bishop Mitrofan of Voronezh as St Mitrofan of Voronezh. A ceremony took place in Voronezh to mark the opening of his relics in the Annunciation Cathedral, which Emperor Nicholas I even attended. However this was marked by tragedy as the massing of pilgrims resulted in an outbreak of cholera. In 1836 the Blagoveschensky Mitrofansky Monastery was established around the Annunciation Cathedral.

20th Century

Soviet power.

Postcard depicting the Blagoveschensky Mitrofansky Monastery before the Revolution

In 1905 pogroms, mutinies and mass strikes all took place in Voronezh. After the October Revolution, the 5th machine-gun regiment in the city rose up and enabled the Bolsheviks to secure power in Voronezh. In 1928 Voronezh became the administrative centre of the Central Black Earth Region, so called due to the fertile soil of the region. In 1931 the Bolsheviks blew up Voronezh's Our Lady of Vladimir Church. In 1934 the Voronezh Region was later created from the dissolved Central Black Earth Region.

Second World War

Photograph of Voronezh after the Second World War

By 1942 Voronezh found itself on the frontline and was periodically subjected to air raids by the Luftwaffe.  On 28 June 1942 the Nazis launched the Battle for Voronezh and parts of the city fell on 7 July 1942 and remained occupied by the Nazis until 25 January 1943 . Thousands of Nazi soldiers were taken prisoner during the liberation, but the Red Army liberators found an almost completely devastated city.  It has been estimated that up to 92% of residential houses were destroyed during the occupation.  In 2008 Voronezh was named a City of Military Glory for the heroism shown by its defenders during the partial occupation of Voronezh which did not allow the strategically important city to be completely captured.
