The design of a boat, whatever its size, involves diverse and multifaceted knowledge. A boat is simultaneously a means of transportation and a living environment; it lives on the water and yet relates to the coasts. The range of objects of study and design presents a great variety: from the luxury yacht to the interiors of ships intended to accommodate tourism, but also schools or hospitals; from the performance boat to the design of the accessory, component or new mode of transport on water.

The study of context, scenario building, and the ability to represent and communicate are part of the graduate's preparation, without forgetting the cultural roots and historical knowledge that characterize the field.  The student learns to understand contexts of use, outline trend lines, imagine modes of use, and create new services and products.

The graduate acquires the skills necessary to conceive, design and implement interior and exterior design of boats and recreational vessels, manage the evolution of the project considering the production processes and the many dynamics involved in its realization, develop an ability to effectively communicate project and product content.

master yacht design genova

Architecture and Design Department in Genoa was founded in 1972 (Faculty of Architecture). Students may enroll in several programs of study that are all linked to the tradition of the former Faculty of Architecture now Department of Architecture and Design, as it is recognized all over Italy. A great attention is always given to the built, physical and cultural environment, in all its scales: from the buildings to the city, from the design of objects to the communication media, from the territory to the landscape, from the architectural and historic heritage to the design of new architectures.

The Architecture and Design Department is located on the hill of “Castello”, in the oldest part of the Genoese historical centre. Facing into the natural bay of the pre-Roman port, the hill was the location of the first historical settlements of Genoa and has witnessed the numerous transformations from the high-medieval period to the present day. Situated on the ruins of an ancient monastery and around the late-medieval nucleus of the bishop’s palace, the new school is based on a design originally conceived for the School of Humanities. The overall plan is by the architect Ignazio Gardella, who situated the block of his building on the foundations of the old churches. The new building was placed alongside the recovery and renovation of the oldest buildings of the monastery of San Silvestro, following the design of the engineer Luciano Grossi Bianchi. The intervention ended in 1990

The Master trains product-designers, communication-designers, brand-designers and event-designers. It evolves the professional designer as global consultant, allowing to coordinate the whole process from conception to distribution and image’s dissemination.

Master’s Degree of Yacht and Cruise Ship Design (2-year program) – 120 ETCS

This Master’s degree is a inter-university program managed by the University of Genoa and the Politecnico di Milano. Founded in 2005, it is based in the University Campus of the city of La Spezia. This educational program is very rare and almost unique for Europe and the Mediterranean area. It aims to teach the design of interiors and outline-layout of small crafts, sailing and motor yachts, cruise vessels and -in addition- infrastructures, building processes and the design of marine products and spare components for industries or special features for customers. The skills of the students are oriented both in artistic humanities (representation, communication and history) and technical applications (naval architecture, structures, materials and fluid-dynamics). This education is appreciated in both domestic and international applications. Within one year from graduation, job placement of students is over 94%. These master designers are placed approximately 70% in Italy and 30% abroad. The enrolling of foreign students is increasing year after year. The international cooperations for students exchanges are mainly active with France, USA, UK, TR and PRC.

Naval and Nautical Design

Departments: University of Genoa (DAD e DITEN) – and Politecnico di Milano Coordinator: Prof. Andrea Ratti

Information

Attachments and links, programs and teachers, notifications, information about the course: naval and nautical design.

The professional figure of the Naval and Nautical Designer, graduating from a Master’s degree program, unique in Italy, is able to manage the complexity of the project, from the development of the concept through to the realization phases. The fundamental purpose of the Degree Course is the formation of a systemic design capacity, enabling the graduate to interpret the profession, anticipate trends, operate in the planning phase, follow the execution, and evaluate the impact of choices made. The study of the context, the construction of scenarios, the capacity to represent and communicate are all parts of the preparation of the graduate, without forgetting the cultural and historical knowledge that characterizes the field.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

The Degree program responds to a high demand, not only nationally, but also internationally. The range of objects of study presents a remarkable variety: from luxury yachts, in which there is a need for significant sensibilities to contemporary languages, to the design of interiors of ships destined for tourism, but also for schools or hospitals; from the design of a high performance boat, in which the hull and propulsion are the most relevant aspects, to the design of new modes of transport on water. Therefore, the student must be able to understand the contexts of use, to delineate the trend lines, to imagine the manner of use, and to create new services and products.

The Course Catalogue foresees a degree program in which there are design laboratories and workshops that allow students to learn how to manage the complexity of a project: in the laboratories the knowledge is integrated and developed both in technical-engineering classes and in classes in the humanities. The collaboration of two universities, with five departments, permits an educational path that integrates different skills and different educational approaches. The final exam consists of a discussion, in front of a special commission, on an original scientific and technical thesis developed under the guidance of a professor.

OCCUPATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

The main employment opportunities for a Naval and Nautical Designer are: studies and design companies; companies and agencies operating in the design field in all sectors of application of the discipline; public and private institutions; freelance work. Over 80% of Master’s degree graduates in Naval and Nautical Design find employment in the above-mentioned sectors within 12 months of obtaining their degree.

SATURA STUDIO

YACHT & DESIGN

“SaturaStudio” is a young designers team founded in 2018 by Alberto Frulla , Federica Fino and Francesco Viola . The partenership started during the master in “Yacht Design” at the University of Genova and Politecnico of Milano where they won the MYDA award in the “New Project” category with “M/Y Tuxedo”. The team’s work is focused on “Yacht Design” and “Interior Design” and involves the whole design process, from the concept to the costruction. STS develops tailor-made design projects for new construction and refitt, from 5 to 50 meters.

The team’s purpose is to build a close connection with the customer trying to understand his tastes, his needs and his passions and involving him in the design process from the first sketches to the final proposal. The experimentation through digital technologies such as aumented reality and 3d printing allows to increase the customer experience and to offer innovative and interesting design solutions. Our goal is to connect the inspiration that comes from different scenarios like art, nature, sea, fas hion and car design to the functionality of the product making a connection between interior space and exterior line that can be the perfect balance between aesthetic and functionality. SaturaStudio team up with well-known Italian Shipyards such as Cantiere del Pardo, Cayman Yachts, Lusben Benetti, Scanner Marine and Tornado Yachts as well as International Shipyards and brokers such as Portofino Marine and Floating Life International. STS design is the finest compromise between shape, function and feelings.
