Y is for Yacht Art and Craft

I know your young learners are yearning to master the letter Y. Here is a preschool art that will help your little one master this letter in no time- Y is for Yacht Art and Craft Activity!

Y is for Yacht Art and Craft

I think it’s important for children to be exposed to a lot of words, even the uncommon ones so they can have a rich vocabulary.

Like in the case of boats. We always use boat as an example of a word that begins with b. Children are very familiar with it and they can talk extensively about it.

Since my preschoolers already know so much about boats, I decided to add more to their word bank by introducing other water transportation words.

With fun videos and pictures, I was able to catch their interest and attention.  And so they learned more words.

It’s very rewarding to hear them use the words outside of the classroom in a more casual and personal context. For me, it means that they’re really learning.

As always, I came up with an art activity for further help them remember the words they’ve just learned. In this instance, I focused on the word yacht.

This alphabet activity not only helps them in remembering the new vocabulary word but it’s also great for reviewing letter sound. It also targets the following learning objectives:

  • Master the letter Y through a visual cue (image of a yacht) and an auditory cue (beginning sound of the word yacht)
  • Develop fine motor skills
  • Foster creativity and imagination

  • yellow art paper

  • Blue art paper

Directions:

  • Draw and cut an outline of the letter Y on a yellow art paper.
  • Cut pieces for the sail and hull.
  • Glue the pieces together.
Teacher’s Note: Add to your child’s vocabulary by exposing him even to uncommon words.

Activities for the Letter Y

July 22, 2014 by OneMommy

If you are a regular reader here, you know we’ve been doing a vehicle alphabet series .

We have just two letters left!   Today it’s time for activities for the letter Y!

The day we did our letter Y activities I used sidewalk chalk to write the letter Y, along with a few other random letters, around the outside of the house.

After breakfast the kids went on a “Y” hunt!

To make it more challenging for my 6 year-old I wrote several words that use the letter “Y” and asked her to read them when we found them.   (I used the words “you,” “yes,” “yellow,” “by,” and “why” which are all words she learned this year in kindergarten.

As she read the words we talked about the sounds the letter “Y” makes.  The 5 year-old had fun practicing the “Y” sounds.

We had one other activity to get us moving and learning outside… a letter “Y” hopscotch!

The idea was to only jump on the letter Y, avoiding any other letters.  I quickly found that they are really good at this!

When we went inside the 5 year-old worked on writing capital and lower-case “Y” with this l etter Y worksheet .

They both colored  some yacht coloring sheets I found online.  (After all, sticking with the vehicle-theme, “Y is for yacht!”)

And then it was time to build our own yachts!

We used a block of styrofoam that I cut ahead of time to make the boat’s hull.  (If you have to cut it, i suggest doing it outside!)

For the masts we used drinking straws.  Use a pencil tip to poke a hole in the styrofoam; it makes it easier to push the straw into place!

Then we added colorful paper sails and our yachts were ready to sail!

Kristen Walker

This looks like a lot of fun! Thanks for the idea!

' data-src=

We haven’t started these crafts yet but I plan to. Should I go back and start in alphabetical order or can I dive in with this one?

Lindy, That is up to you! It can be helpful to go through it alphabetically, to reinforce alphabetical order and take advantage of the Alphabet Song. However, you can still sing the Alphabet Song no matter what order you do the crafts and there are many ways to work on alphabetical order.

If you haven’t seen it already, here is the link to the entire alphabet ABC Animal Crafts .
