Meet VisionE, a 186-Foot Superyacht Concept With a Retractable Solar Roof Over Its Sun Deck
It’s always nice when a superyacht packs a few surprises. Case in point: Too Design’s newest concept . The unassuming 186-footer is full of interesting features that only become apparent upon closer inspection.
The futuristic, eco-friendly vessel, which has been dubbed VisionE, was penned by the studio’s founder and veteran designer Marco Casali , with the goal of creating a more sustainable way of living and yachting.

A Pristine Platinum Porsche 918 Spyder With Just 966 Miles Is Up for Auction
Legendary Architect Richard Rogers Has Died at Age 88
“The name, which is Italian for “vision,” stands for a yaching evolution; an ecological, electrical, environmentally-friendly vision—our visionE,” Casali told Robb Report.
Most notably, VisionE is fitted with a retractable solar roof that opens up to reveal a sprawling 1,600-square-foot sun deck with a spa pool, alfresco dining area and lounge. Think of it as the marine equivalent of a Kinder Surprise Egg. Beyond the cool mechanics, the roof’s solar panels can harness up to 62 kW of energy from the sun, which is then stored in the large battery pack on board and used to power the yacht.
Speaking of power, Casali partnered with Francesco Rogantin of Names Studio on the superyacht’s propulsion and engineering. VisionE has been equipped with a hybrid diesel-electric system capable of pushing her to an estimated 14 knots, but could eventually run purely on clean, green electricity or even hydrogen. In order to further increase efficiency, VisionE sports a sleek aluminum hull and sharp bow specially designed to reduce drag.
In addition to the nifty hydraulic roof, VisionE’s seven staterooms each feature balconies that automatically fold down to give the 14 guests direct (and private) access to the ocean. The aft bulwarks can be extended, too, in order to create a massive deck by the water’s edge. At the center of this multi-purpose area is a section that can be opened up to create a saltwater swimming pool in the sea, or a garage for the tender. The section can also be covered to create a basketball court or outdoor cinema.
As for the 499 GT interior, it offers an open-plan layout geared toward entertaining, and can be customized to the owner’s taste. You’d better believe there will be a few surprises, though.

10 Awe-Inspiring Superyachts
- By Yachting Staff
- April 14, 2023
Superyachts are the commanders of the sea, and it makes sense why. These super-sized vessels can do everything, from indefinitely taking you away from land to being the headquarters of your next angling adventure. Whether it’s on the top deck, the main deck or belowdecks, the volume on superyachts is unmatched. Owners customize these spaces with modular furniture, hot tubs, swimming pools, beach clubs, gymnasiums and more, making them as unique as fingerprints.
Here are 10 amazing superyachts on the water today.
Ferretti Yachts 860
Flybridge designs are fundamental to the Ferretti Yachts DNA, and this one sticks with the winning formula. The after half of the flybridge is open to interpretation, with a hot tub option, while the standard layout forward includes a dinette for eight guests, a sun pad to port, and a wet bar and two-seat helm station to starboard. Three sizes of hardtop are available, the largest one even bigger than the hardtop on the flagship Ferretti Yachts 1000 . — Phil Draper, “ The Ferretti Yachts 860 Is an Evolution ”
Hargrave 105
[Mike] Joyce is the CEO of Hargrave Custom Yachts , whose latest 105, Irresistible, exemplifies numerous ways the builder tailors its designs to what each owner wants.
Irresistible, for instance, has a raised pilothouse, creating an all-weather backup to the flybridge helm. The bridge is open, but it’s shaded by the fiberglass hardtop, rather than having a sky lounge on board. That’s already a lot of personalization based on the starting point of a new Jack Sarin-designed hull that tops out at 21 knots and cruises at 18 knots. In addition, this owner was planning 1,000-nautical-mile voyages, so he opted for twin 1,600 hp Caterpillar C32 Acert diesels. Irresistible reportedly has a 2,000-nautical-mile range at 10 knots. Based on my time aboard, I can report that the hull is also comfortable in Gulf Stream lumps. — Chris Caswell, “ Hargrave 105 Superyacht Review ”
Ocean Alexander 35R
… Yachtsmen began to learn that gross tonnage was more important than feet and inches in terms of the creature comforts they wanted.
The 116-foot-9-inch Ocean Alexander 35R, whose gross tonnage is just shy of 300, is the latest model to demonstrate both points. Hull No. 1 was commissioned by a client before the shipyard could exhibit the yacht, and Hull No. 2 sold quickly during its debut at the [2021] Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in Florida. As of early December [2021], Hull No. 7 was the first available build slot, with delivery anticipated in 2024. The series is attracting attention from loyal Ocean Alexander buyers and newcomers alike. – Diane M. Byrne, “ Reviewed: Ocean Alexander 35R ”
Dynamiq GTT 135
In the pilothouse, Dynamiq worked with German vehicle outfitter Klassen to develop a bespoke wheelhouse, finished in the same quality and style of the company’s luxury shuttle vans (think sporty trim and high-end finishes). The five-stateroom layout is accented in soft-gold and mother-of-pearl flourishes. A pair of 75-inch TVs await guests on the sun deck, where they might want to relax after a drink at the bar. — Kim Kavin, “ Dynamiq’s GTT 135 Evokes Elegance ”
Wally WHY200
Why WHY200? The acronym stands for Wally Hybrid Yachts, which has nothing to do with hybrid propulsion, but rather a hull designed for a range of displacement and semi-displacement cruising speeds. And the numerals don’t reference length. They reflect the approximate volume (199 gross tons), which is a lot for a yacht with a length overall of just 89 feet.
But length is not what matters these days. Gross tonnage and beam—the feeling of space—are the important metrics. And on this yacht, that most important effect is achieved. — Phil Draper, “ Wally’s WHY200 Impresses Inside and Out ”
Royal Huisman Project 406
Project 406 has a length overall of 171 feet. That means the vessel will dwarf not only the most sizable 80- to 105-footers from well-known sport-fish builders—such as Viking Yachts , Bayliss Boatworks and Jim Smith Tournament Boats—but also the behemoth one-off sport-fishers such as the 144-foot Trinity Bad Company, 130-foot McMullen & Wing Mea Culpa and 129-foot Yachting Developments Lanakai. As the team at Royal Huisman expressed this reality about Project 406, “This groundbreaking creation will be, by some distance, the largest, most luxurious and individual true sport-fish yacht in the world.” — Kim Kavin, “ Biggest Sport-Fishing Boat in the World ”
Sanlorenzo SL106 Asymmetric
The idea behind the Asymmetric line dates back several years. Sanlorenzo was wrestling with how to provide owners with more usable interior space. An initial idea was a widebody design, in which the main-deck interior spans the yacht’s full beam. Sanlorenzo quickly decided that wasn’t practical for smaller to midsize superyachts. So, [Sanlorenzo CEO Massimo] Perotti sought the input of designer Chris Bangle, with whom Sanlorenzo has been working since 2015. Bangle is known for shaking up the designs of Fiat and BMW. He came up with the notion of a widebody to one side to benefit owners along with a full side deck opposite, as well as an over-the-widebody passage from the flybridge to the bow to benefit the crew. — Diane M. Byrne, “ Sanlorenzo’s Asymmetric SL106A Reviewed ”
Westport 112
At first, the owner thought he and his family would use the 112-foot Hannah without making any changes. Then, his wife looked at it.
“The original idea was just to change a few things inside, but you start one thing, and you say, ‘Why don’t you do the next one?’” he says. “We kept going and going and going.”
After buying the Westport yacht in early 2020, the owner brought in Destry Darr Designs for the refit . She ended up orchestrating a total overhaul, finishing the project at the end of 2020. The yacht’s post-refit maiden cruise with the family was during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays that winter, then Westport Yachts began offering Hannah for charter . — Kim Kavin, “ Refitting the 112-Foot ‘Hannah’ for Charter ”
Hargrave ‘Baba’s’
These days, many shipyards tell buyers they can design their yachts the way they see fit, but some of those same builders actually offer semicustom yachts. Some, arguably, are more production than semicustom. Clients have two, maybe three choices for general arrangements, for example, and the exterior styling is set in stone. Fewer permit moving nonstructural bulkheads. Much of the time, the systems and engine packages are nonnegotiable.
That was not the case with Baba’s .
Hargrave saw the challenge as a way to prove its mettle to would-be owners outside the United States. “This is the connection to the global market we never had,” says Michael Joyce, Hargrave’s CEO. The yard also let [Sam] Shalem—a longtime owner of a real-estate-development and -management company who is accustomed to assembling teams—play a large role in choosing craftsmen to work on the project. This father of four and grandfather to even more (baba means “grandfather” in several cultures) was hands-on in nearly all aspects, ranging from gathering the workers to specifying the systems to selecting the mosaics in the interior. — Diane M. Byrne, “ Hargrave’s 186-Foot Vessel Shows Creativity ”
Rybovich 94
Throw out any preconceived notions you may have about sport-fishing yachts —even large ones. III Amigos—a 94-footer from the consortium of boatbuilder Michael Rybovich , designer Patrick Knowles and an experienced owner—is far more mega-yacht than most fishing machines.
III Amigos was born in a peculiar fashion. Its owner, who spends 50 to 60 days a year fishing, first approached Rybovich but, before signing, asked Knowles to do a dizzying collection of realistic renderings to show the final result. Knowles had a solid knowledge base from working with the owner on previous yachts as well as the owner’s five homes and his business jet, so he had a good idea about where to start. — Chris Caswell, “ The Sportfishing Superyacht: Rybovich 94 ”

Ohio’s legendary 113-year-old Ghost Ship
It was another wonderful day for the kayakers as they were cruising through the forest. Yet they certainly did not expect to discover a ghost ship that was over a century old.
Shockingly, as they cruised along the Ohio River, they discovered the amazing sight of an abandoned vessel. Even though the pictures themselves were really neat, they did a little bit more research about the ship.
It turned out that they had found a ship with a proud history within the United States of America. The ship was initially crafted by a Delaware ship maker named Pusey and Jones. The ship manufacturer was started by Mr. Joshua Pusey and his partner John Jones in the city of Wilmington.
They rented an area from a whaling company that was positioned through the Pennsylvania Railroad. In the year 1851, the company bought an interest then changed its name to Betts, Pusey, Jones & Seal. Three years later, their bet paid off, and they constructed the first iron-hulled sail boat in the United States. The company built a vessel that took the crown at America’s Cup.
It was the first steel yacht to ever take home the crown. In 1887, the company built the first steel-hulled yacht to win the America’s Cup, Volunteer . Naturally, the company caught the attention of the of man name J. Maxwell.
He was a railroad executive of the same Pennsylvania Railroad that Pusey and Jones were positioned next to. And although he was a businessman, one of his true passions was yachting. Maxwell won the 1907 King’s Cup with his ship Queen in a race against Commodore Vanderbilt.
The ship was initially constructed two years into the 20 th century and was created as a yacht for J. Maxwell who was a renowned railroad executive. It first set sail in the second week of April in the year 1902 where it stayed faithful until its first change of ownership.
Just before World War 1, the Celt was bought by a gentleman named Manton B. Metcalf and was happily used under the new name of Sachem .
But when the war broke out in 1914, Germany’s key strategy to defeat the British was to be able to stop the resources from North America from being delivered to the British Empire. Germany was trying to starve and collapse Britain’s economy.
Germany caught wind of the United States entering the war and they embarked on a mission to cut off supplies between the two Allies.
Germany believed they had the advantage because of their famous submarines, named the U-Boats. Germany patrolled the Atlantic trying to send any shipment headed towards Britain to the bottom of the ocean.
This was the first time that submarines played a pivotal role in warfare. U-boats were an incredibly effective tool. They were almost impossible to spot and they could strike any boat without warning. During World War One, the submarines were practically impossible to counter.
In order to combat this disadvantage, the Navy started to rent well-crafted boats from the country’s wealthy elite. The goal was to use the quick ships to outclass the submarines by spotting and outmaneuvering the enemy’s submarines.
The 186-foot yacht that was now owned by Mr. Metcalf was the perfect fit. As the United States entered the war in April of the year 1917, they began searching for vessels that could help them. The yacht Sachem was found and then acquired by the Navy in July and was converted into a Navy vessel within a month.
The ship kept its name and was called SP 192 or the USS Sachem. The ship was equipped with charges that were used to sink the submarines as well as machine guns to respond to the threat of torpedoes. It turned out to be a very effective strategy. The USS Sachem was used to patrol the coastline of the United States.
And while the President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson, dubbed World War One as the “The war to end wars,” the US chose to heavily invest in learning about the U-boats throughout the war to ensure they created a proper counter-attack in the case of future wars.
And for this experiment, they used the USS Sachem to conduct research through none other than Thomas Edison.
Edison is known as one of the greatest inventors and businessmen in history. Even though Edison invented the light bulb and pushed the electric grid into existence, he was trusted by the US government to help combat the United State’s biggest disadvantage at sea. Edison looked like the perfect fit to find a successful strategy to combat and sink the dangerous U-Boats.
While it’s a controversial claim, the use of the boat was tracked down through a series of letters to Edison’s wife and by the tracking of the USS Sachem during the time of Edison’s experiments. First, Edison conducted tests around the New York Harbor before he ultimately sailed it across to Florida and off the Caribbean.
But after he devoted his time to research, Edison and the Navy developed some friction. Edison published an article in 1923 accusing the US Navy “pigeon-holing” every solution he brought to the table. At the end of the war in 1918, Edison, the US Navy, and the USS Sachem went their separate ways.
Sachem proudly completed the war and was returned to its rightful owner. The New York businessman, Manton B. Metcalf, of New York got his yacht back on February 10, 1919.
After Manton had received his boat, he kept it for a time before he chose to sell it off to a banker named Roland Taylor who was from the city of Philadelphia. During the Great Depression, the boat then was pawned off to Jake Martin who used the yacht as a fishing vessel in 1932. Four families would work together to create a small $2 investment to catch some fish. After a decade of action in the fishing industry, the war was once again coming to the United States.
The Navy again purchased the fishing yacht for $65,000 early in 1942. It was converted back into a war machine by Robert Jacobs Inc then was renamed the USS Phenakite or PYc-25.
On the first day of July in 1942, the vessel patrolled the coastline around the Florida. After effectively protecting and combating U-boats, the vessel was quickly decommissioned so it could receive upgrades. The ship was back into action by November of 1944.
The historic yacht was then used to conduct experiments and testing for new sonar technology for another year before it was sent into retirement by the US Navy in October of 1945. A month later, the ship was given to Maritime Commission to disassemble the warship.
The yacht was then returned to its owner Mr. Martin. He then chose to rename it as Sachem just before the end of 1945. He resold the boat to Circle Line. The Sachem became the flagship tour boat for the Circle Line in New York City.
The yacht could hold 500 tourists as the ship elegantly showed the passengers the proud history and beauty of New York. It served faithfully for decades before it was retired from the tourism industry in 1983. Three years later, the boat was purchased by Robert Miller, a man from Ohio. He offered a small investment of $7,500.
After the owner happily accepted the money, Mr. Miller pulled the boat out of the muck it was thrown into and repaired the boat over the course of ten days. One day, while he was working on the ship, a limo cruised up to Mr. Miller. He came asking if Madonna could use the newly remodeled ship.
It was at this point, that the old Yacht entered the show business. It was showcased in the music video for the song “Papa Don’t Preach”.
After the boat was restored, Miller cruised around the region to avoid pricey docking fees. He even used the Sachem on Independence Day in the year 1986 as Ronald Reason relit the Statue of Liberty’s torch. Mr. Miller attended the celebration that was filled with music and fireworks.
Shortly after Independence Day, Miller chose to take his vessel home he bought outside of Northern Kentucky. The land was located just outside of Cincinnati Ohio. This last journey would end the colorful history of the yacht.
Today, it still sits 25 miles from Cincinnati, where the river casually flows to meet the Mississippi River.
Kayakers often stumble upon this ship without knowing the proud history behind it, but the abandoned vessel has been now dubbed the “Ghost Ship.”
Here is another ghost ship story from us: The mystery of the Octavius: An 18th-century ghost ship was discovered with the captain’s body found frozen at his desk, still holding his pen
The next time you’re in Cincinnati, feel free to rent a kayak and check out the vessel that was once commanded by Thomas Edison.

The luxury yacht, or LY for short, was designed to “feel like a hideout in the middle of the sea,” according to Lexus. The exterior reflects the automaker’s “L-finesse” design philosophy, with curvy, head-turning lines and a sharp bow creating a sporty profile.
The interior centers around a “comfortable living space,” Lexus says. With a beam of nearly 19 feet, the yacht offers a decent amount of space onboard, too. The nameplate didn’t divulge many details regarding decor, but Italian design powerhouse Nuvolari Lenard spearheaded the interior design of the 650. In terms of layout, the 680 is equipped with three cabins on the lower deck and a light-filled salon, galley, and helm station on the main deck.
The exterior is bigger—and perhaps better—than that of the 650. The flybridge has been extended by about 4.5 feet and adorned with a plush lounge and grill. The aft swim platform has also been lengthened by roughly 2.3 feet.
In terms of performance, the 680 will be powered by a pair of 12.8-liter turbocharged Volvo D13 engines capable of delivering 1,350 hp each to IPS drives. (The yacht can also be equipped with slightly less powerful 1,050 hp engines.) The 650 sported the same propulsion system and could reach 33.5 knots at full tilt.

The most powerful Lexus ever is actually a $5 million yacht
I t seems Lexus has decided to leave us landlubbers behind and take to the seas . The automaker just unveiled its new flagship: a 2,000 horsepower, 68-foot long yacht with a 1,849-gallon fuel tank, accommodations for 15 people and six beds.
The Lexus LY 680 (of course LY stands for Luxury Yacht) is the next generation of Lexus’ foray into big ol’ boats that started with the LY 650 back in 2018 , according to a release from Toyota . If you’re the kind of person who has the means for a Lexus LY 680, be prepared to fork over about $5.1 million. There’s also the small caveat that you’ve got to be in Japan to order one through Toyota Marine, Automotive News reports. I know, I know. That’s tough to hear.
Outside the LY 680 is wrapped in a very cool copper and silver paint scheme. It actually looks very similar to the rose gold color you can get on the Lexus LC500 . It’s quite sleek-looking, as far as yachts go. Inside is where the real good stuff is. You’ll find all sorts of lounge sofas, high-gloss paneling and other appointments designed by Lexus with the help of Italian styling company Nuvolari Lendard, according to AutoNews .
The second deck of the LY 680 (called the flybridge by nautically-inclined folks ) has apparently been extended by about 4.5 feet, and it features a lounge sofa and a grill. Lexus also extended the swimming platform by about 2.3 feet. If I had to guess, that’s probably where a good chunk of the three feet it grew over the LY 650 came from.
It should be noted, the boat itself won’t actually be built by Lexus . The Japanese automaker is outsourcing that job to a Taiwanese company called Horizon Group. Lexus says that the manufacturer has a “reputation for its advanced technological capabilities which have been honed through the construction of superyachts .
Powering the LY 680 is a pair of 12.8-liter straight-six diesel engines supplied by Volvo, according to Lexus. In their base configuration, the engines make a combined 1,600 horsepower. However, if that’s not enough for you, feel free to up the power to 1,000 horsepower each. That’s right baby. This is a 2,000-horsepower boat.
Here’s a little more from Lexus on what the LY 680 is all about:
Lexus aims to be a luxury lifestyle brand and the flagship Luxury Yacht is the embodiment of the Lexus design philosophy “Crafted.” The LY 680 expresses this philosophy by thoroughly paying attention to every single detail, in order to exceed customers’ expectations and create a unique experience that stimulates their senses, even while at sea. The concept for the Luxury Yacht is “to feel like a hideout in the middle of the sea, providing a space where discerning customers can feel free and at ease.” The exterior embodies the Lexus design philosophy of L-finesse, and the interior has been meticulously crafted down to the smallest details to provide a comfortable living space. In terms of performance, Lexus aims for confidence inspiring cruising performance, offering stable maneuverability, excellent ride comfort, and quietness.
Toyota first entered the boat business back in 1997, and it has sold nearly 1,100 boats since then, but only some have made it to the U.S. market, according to Automotive News .
