Welcome to Lake Erie

Click here to jump down to the many ports around Lake Erie OR

Click a location on the map to go to a port.

The smallest of the Great Lakes by volume, Lake Erie lies upstream from Lake Ontario, receiving its water from Lake Huron to the north via the St. Clair River. It gets its name from native peoples who lived along its southern coastline – the Erielhonan.

Here are some facts about the lake:

 • length: 241mi / 388km / 209nm
 • width: 57mi / 92km / 49nm
 • depth: 62ft / 19m
 • deepest: 210ft / 64m (shallowest at west end: 7.4m)
 • surface area: 9,910 sq mi / 27,7000 km2
 • coastline: 871 mi / 1,402 km / 731 nm (incl islands)

Due to its shallow depth, the lake warms rapidly in the summer, reaches higher than average temperatures and frequently freezes over completely in the winter

Lake Erie lies generally along the line of the prevailing winds. This has implications for sailors, especially as this is a very shallow lake – actually, the shallowest of the five Great Lakes. Storms on the lake can be quite intense and waterspouts are not uncommon. 'Fetch' is the distance over which wind can blow unobstructed. Generally, the longer the fetch, the steeper the waves that are generated. On Erie, the water can be as much as 3/4 – 1 m higher at the eastern end than at the western end when the winds are blowing hard.

The Lake Erie basin encompasses parts of Ontario, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Indiana. This area has very good farmland and has been intensively farmed for over a century. This is also the most heavily industrialized lake in the Great Lakes.

Considering the amount of shipping that this commercial activity generated, it is not surprising that there are a significant number of shipwrecks – some 200 alone off Long Point!

There are approximately two dozen islands in the lake - the majority, and those of any real size, at the western end. These offer excellent waters to explore (and some delicious wines to enjoy from fine island wineries).

The ports and harbours that ring Erie offer everything from great rock and roll music (Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland OH) to the solitudes of the world biosphere of Long Point (a favourite sailing ground of mine) to picturesque island villages. Erie is a delight to cruising sailors.

Check out some of these harbours in the following port reviews or plan an interesting cruise to experience all that this great has to offer.

Freighter catches fire in Lake Erie Friday afternoon

sailboat cruise lake erie

U.S. Coast Guard Great Lakes personnel fought a commercial vessel fire in Ashtabula on Friday afternoon, according to a social media post from the agency.

“I’ve been here 40 years, and I’ve never seen that happen,” Dee Whited said.

#BREAKING - #USCG personnel are responding to a commercial vessel fire aboard the CUYAHOGA #Ashtabula by providing on-scene information and status updates via deployed boats and a helicopter. Master and crew of the CUYAHOGA are safe and accounted for. The fire is ongoing. pic.twitter.com/aQNJUQe4II — USCG Great Lakes (@USCGGreatLakes) March 15, 2024

The thick black smoke that once clouded the sky in Ashtabula is now gone as multiple agencies across Ashtabula County and surrounding communities worked to put the flames out.

“ I figured the boats were on fire because I’ve seen them start up, and little smoke comes out of the stack, but this was pretty bad,” Whited said.

Whited told News 5 she first saw the fire when she left her home, just across from the lake, to go to an appointment.

“I didn’t hear anything, but the smoke filled the sky,” Whited said.

According to the USCG Great Lakes, the Motor Vessel Cuyahoga was getting work done in preparation for the upcoming shipping season when a fire broke out.

A preliminary investigation found the cause to be welding, which ignited paint on the inside of the cargo hold Friday afternoon around 2 p.m. and took about three hours to put out, USCG Great Lakes said.

The ship is one of the oldest ships still traveling the Great Lakes.

From there, Search and Rescue Controller Paul Angelillo says the fire spread to the main deck and eventually caused a conveyor belt to catch fire, too.

image (4).png

“Thanks to the prompt actions of Ashtabula County Emergency Dispatch, assets got on scene, and Ashtabula County firefighters put the fire out,” said Search and Rescue Controller Paul Angelillo.

Angelillo said the master and crew are safe, and he said there does not appear to be any concerns for those living nearby.

“The fire’s out, everybody’s safe, there was little environmental impact, no release of product. There’s no cargo abroad the ship either,” Angelillo said.

It’s not clear if the ship is totaled until Angelillo said marine engineers and architects do further assessments on the damage caused beyond the fire.

“Right now, we have coast guard teams of investigators on board and inspectors that are taking a look at the ship and trying to get a better understanding of if there will be structural damage and then look at the cause and effect of the fire; like how it started,” Angelillo said.

Fire teams will remain on the scene just in case any hot spots catch on fire again.

In May of 2023, the Cuyahoga caught fire overnight on Lake Erie. The fire broke out in the engine, and no injuries were reported.

Millers, Kelleys ferry services already active on Lake Erie after light winter

Area ferry services have opened their operating seasons this month after a mild winter with light ice cover .

Kelleys Island Ferry began its season March 4 with rides from Marblehead to Seaway Marina. The ferry is the only daily automobile and passenger ferry service to Kelleys Island.

The ferry began service in 1991 and employs 50 to 60 people in the summer.

"This first week is going great," Eddie Ehrbar from Kelleys Island Ferry said. "Normal first week of operation as everyone gets back into the swing of things."

Kelleys is the largest freshwater American island in Lake Erie. The island is home to a glacial grooves monument, a brewery, a wine company and Kelleys Island State Park.

There are approximately 150 year-round residents, with the population swelling to around 1,500 during the summer.

More: Put-in-Bay popular events to return in 2024

Glacial groves popular on Kelley's Island

The most popular destination on Kelleys is the glacial grooves, which measure 400 feet long, 35 feet wide and up to 15 feet deep.

They were created by the slow movement of the massive glacier that created the Great Lakes and Lake Erie Islands. When glaciers move across the earth, they pick up rocks, soil, and other debris, and drag them along.

As the ice crept over the soft limestone bedrock of Kelleys Island, these harder bits of rock gouged the grooves.

These grooves are the largest and most easily accessible example of the geological phenomenon anywhere in the world.

Miller Ferry already running

The Miller Ferry Boat Co. began its season March 2 with trips between Catawba Island and South Bass Island (Put-in-Bay) and select trips to Middle Bass Island.

"The beginning of the season is going great," Katrina Reed with Miller Ferry said. "There are some projects on the islands so we will have steady vehicle traffic with trucks, construction workers and materials."

Miller Boat Line is the only scheduled means of transporting freight, cars and commercial vehicles to Put-in-Bay and Middle Bass. It’s the only scheduled ferry service to Middle Bass Island. They also provide freight charters to North Bass Island and Rattlesnake Island.

Started in 1905 as a fishing charter, water taxi and ice harvesting business, the company has grown to become the largest ferry service on Lake Erie.

Their most recent addition is the M/V Mary Ann Market, a drive-on/drive-off passenger and vehicle ferry, which stands 140 feet long, 38½ feet wide and has a 7-foot draft. The fifth and largest vessel in the Miller Ferry fleet, it has a capacity of 600 passengers and approximately 28 vehicles.

Miller Boat Line employs 100 people during peak season.

Approximately 750,000 people visit the islands of Put-in-Bay and Middle Bass Island each year. Year-round Put-in-Bay population is about 450 and Middle Bass is 45.

There’s less ice than ever on Oneida Lake, and it’s only going to get worse

There’s less ice than ever on Oneida Lake

Joe Woznica, of Cicero, took his drone over Oneida Lake on Jan. 16, 2024, to capture the first ice forming on the lake. The ice broke up a week later. Wozztography

One frigid day in the winter of 1965, Don Therre, 11, trudged alone across the frozen surface of Oneida Lake, dragging behind him a heavy steel bar that ice anglers call a spud. Toes growing numb inside his cheap pack boots, he raised the spud and hacked a hole in the thick ice.

“You can do that when you’re young!” Therre recently joked.

Now, at 69, he uses a hand drill with an augur to punch through the ice—when there is ice.

“Back in those days we’d get quite a bit of ice, not so much like today,” he said. “Two foot, close to 30 inches, right in that range. That was a given by February.”

Generations of Therre’s family have lived on Oneida Lake for 131 years. Ice is in his blood. But lately he’s noticed that the ice is getting thinner. Two years ago, his favorite fishing spots had a foot of ice. Last year, nine inches. This season, a mere five and half inches (the safe minimum is four).

“For fishable ice, it’s the worst I’ve ever seen,” he said. “The biggest thing to me in recent years is ice comes on and breaks up, and then on again. It doesn’t get a chance to build at all.”

There’s less ice than ever on Oneida Lake

Generations of Don Therre's family have lived on Oneida Lake for 131 years. In 60 years of ice fishing on the lake, Therre has witnessed first-hand the shrinking ice cover that one day will disappear completely. Steve Featherstone | [email protected]

Therre’s observations closely mirror a long-term trend documented since 1975 by scientists at Cornell University’s Biological Field Station in Bridgeport: Oneida Lake’s seasonal ice cover is shrinking at a rate of one day per year, and global warming is accelerating the trend.

“You can expect the ice season to get shorter,” said the field station’s director, Lars Rudstam, professor of aquatic and fisheries science at Cornell. “And then at some point you’re going to have intermittent ice—ice opening up for a while, closing up again.”

Oneida Lake is in a transition period, like an ice cube bobbing in a cup on hot summer day. Rudstam speculates that it could be ice free by mid-century. So what does that mean for the people, economy, and ecosystem now struggling to adapt?

There’s less ice than ever on Oneida Lake

This graph from Cornell University shows how many days Oneida Lake was covered in ice each year, from 1975 to the present. On average, the lake has lost one day of ice cover per year, and the decline is accelerating. Cornell Biological Field Station

Central New York is the state’s most popular freshwater fishing destination according to a 2017 study commissioned by the Department of Environmental Conservation . Anglers spend more time fishing here than the Finger Lakes, Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, or Lake Champlain.

Smack in the middle of this fishing mecca is Oneida Lake, the largest lake wholly within New York’s borders and the state’s walleye capital. It’s the main reason why anglers in 2017 dropped nearly $50 million here on bait, lodging, groceries, restaurants, and guide services.

Most of that money flows in the warmer months, but winter provides a crucial second season that many small local businesses rely on to stay afloat. That winter boost isn’t so reliable anymore.

“Never seen anything like it in 40 years. It’s crazy,” said Al Dahar.

Dahar and his two brothers run Mickey’s Live Bait & Tackle in North Syracuse, an Oneida Lake institution since 1950. Twenty years ago ice fishing accounted for a quarter of their business, Dahar said. Now it’s less than 10 percent.

“Let’s put it this way, I don’t look forward to it anymore, and I don’t plan on it anymore, and the only way I’m going to order ice tackle is if I see people out there,” said Dahar, adding that he saw ice fishermen on only one weekend this season.

“That was it,” he said, “we can’t depend on it.”

There’s less ice than ever on Oneida Lake

Al Dahar of Mickey's Bait and Tackle in North Syracuse says the past ice fishing season was the worst he's seen in 40 years. Many tackle shops around Oneida Lake are feeling the pinch. Steve Featherstone | [email protected]

Scott Masucci, owner of Lakeside Outfitters, a tackle shop just down the road from Lewis Point, is in the same boat. Around one-third of his annual sales come during ice fishing season, he said, and this season was by far the worst.

“It really wasn’t a season,” Masucci said. “We had about a week of fishing.”

Some of his customers went to the Finger Lakes instead. Most didn’t fish at all, especially those who travel from out of state to catch walleye through Oneida’s ice.

“Guys are fed up,” Masucci said. “They don’t want to put money into something if they don’t know it’s going to happen. We need the out of towners to make their way back.”

Oneida Lake’s hospitality sector is also reeling. In 2019, Tobi and Donnie Carbone opened Carbone’s Beachside hotel and restaurant in Sylvan Beach. Between the Covid pandemic and weak winters, it’s been a rough start.

“We rely heavily on the ice for the hotel because we get tons of ice fishermen,” Tobi said. “But this year has been horrible. Last year was bad too, but this year, just terrible.”

And it’s not just mom and pop joints that are suffering. Comfort Suites in Cicero caters to anglers all year round. Ice fishermen usually fill most of the hotel’s 65 rooms in winter.

“I probably could count on one hand this winter how many fishermen came,” said Danielle Escalera, Comfort Suites operations manager. “It killed us, we hardly had anybody.”

There’s less ice than ever on Oneida Lake

The Great Lakes reached a historic low of 2.7% ice coverage in early February 2024. Despite a short season and fewer bookings, Louis Pagnotti, who operates Chaumont Masters guide service, pulled these walleye from the ice on Chaumont Bay in February. Louis Pagnotti

Don Therre drilled his first ice hole this season on Jan. 19. The ice soon broke up, refroze, broke up again. Then February’s record-shattering heat wave killed whatever ice was left.

Jack Henke, author of four books on Oneida Lake history, remembers when February thaws were welcome respites from bone-chilling cold, not the potential season spoilers they are today.

“We’d look forward to that because there’d be 20 inches of ice,” he said. “Let it be 65 degrees, big deal. You’d fish in absolute comfort. Those days are gone.”

In February, the South Shore Association of Oneida Lake canceled what would’ve been its 71st annual ice fishing derby. Bad conditions forced dozens of organizations across upstate NY to do the same, starving sporting clubs of critical funding and strangling cultural life in many rural communities.

“This is what keeps our club alive,” said Scott Lalonde, chairman of the Tupper Lake Northern Challenge, after he cancelled the popular derby for the first time in 24 years due to sketchy ice.

“We just gave the prizes away for entering,” he said. “Of course, we lose our shirt doing it.”

As grim as things appear, some people are already adapting. For two winters in a row now, Nick Sokolowski, who operates Soco Outdoors Sportfishing guide service, cancelled all his Oneida ice fishing trips and shifted them to other lakes.

“Being in Central New York, you have different species to target, which is really nice,” Sokolowski said. “If it’s a beautiful winter day and we’re in a boat on Cayuga catching a box full of perch, not many people can complain about that.”

Therre even bought a second boat—a winter rat of sorts—to take advantage of Oneida’s weird new winter open water season. Jigging for walleye from a boat in the dead of winter is something 11-year-old Don Therre would’ve found less plausible than the 1969 moon landing.

“And I’m fine with that,” Therre said. “If it was 60 degrees next week and the ice was off, you can bet your life I’d be in the boat.”

There’s less ice than ever on Oneida Lake

The recreational and economic costs of an increasingly iceless Oneida Lake are plain to see. But there’s some upside, at least in the short term.

For one, half of Oneida’s annual perch harvest is caught through the ice according to Cornell’s data. No ice means more perch live to see another day.

The same logic applies to walleye, said Tony VanDeValk, coordinator of the fisheries program at Cornell’s Oneida Lake field station. Walleyes not caught during a normal ice fishing season will still be swimming around during the open water season.

That’s great news for fair weather anglers and those with boats. But angler harvest is just one of the many variables regulating fish populations, including water temperature, oxygen level, food availability, invasive species, and so on.

Zoe Almeida, senior research associate at Cornell, points to a growing body of research showing the negative effects of mild winters on spawning and recruitment, or survivability of young fish, for many of Oneida Lake’s important sport fish species.

The most recent is a study by Wisconsin researchers published last month . It shows that rapidly shrinking ice cover and warming water temperatures in 194 lakes in the upper Midwest are causing walleyes to spawn earlier, disrupting the delicately balanced food web.

Cornell’s Lars Rudstam says similar trends also threaten Oneida Lake’s walleye population by flipping the table on seasonal predator-prey cycles. Alewife, a walleye prey species that normally dies off in winter, will thrive as Oneida warms.

“And that’s a problem, because alewife are really good at feeding on larval fish, particularly walleye,” said Rudstam. “I would expect that within a couple of decades we’ll have a lake with alewife and bass, and some rather big walleyes, but not as many.”

Oneida Lake is but one piece of data pointing to a global trend: ice is melting at an unprecedented pace— Himalayan glaciers, polar ice caps, Alaska’s permafrost. In February, the Great Lakes reached a historic low of 2.7% ice coverage according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration .

Until we get control over our greenhouse gas emissions, there’s little that can be done to mitigate the changes in store for Oneida Lake, said Rudstam, adding that it doesn’t help to be “alarmist.”

“Think about Oneida Lake being more like lakes in southern Indiana or reservoirs in North Carolina,” he said. “People are out fishing in wintertime in their boats. You have to change, you have to adapt. You’re not going to kill the fishery in Oneida Lake.”

Fatal boat crash launched woman into trees and threw man into water, Florida cops say

A body pulled from trees was among two discovered after a 21-foot boat crashed near southwest Florida’s Little Hickory Bay, according to investigators.

It happened around 3 p.m. Friday, March 15, not far from North Naples, about a 160-mile drive south from Tampa, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said in a news release.

“The vessel, carrying two occupants, was traveling north, passing red channel marker 14, when it’s starboard side ran into the mangrove trees, ejecting both passengers,” FWC officials said.

“The unmanned vessel remained in gear until it crashed into the mangrove shoreline, coming to a stop.”

Judy Eaton, 71, of Bonita Springs “was recovered from the mangrove trees where she was pronounced deceased,” officials said.

John Moulder, 71, of Naples, was airlifted by EMS to Gulf Coast Medical Center in Ft. Myers, “where he later died from his injuries,” officials said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but alcohol may have been a factor, investigators said in the report.

Boaters who use the area regularly told WBBH the couple died at a turn known to be dangerous, but signs marking the hazard vanished during Hurricane Ian , which struck southwest Florida in September 2022.

“Sadly, I was not surprised,” boater Kevin Price told the station. “I had a conversation with another friend recently about this turn specifically, and some of the close calls I’ve seen at this spot.”

Cuyahoga, one of the oldest Great Lakes ships, is on fire in Lake Erie

The coast guard reports the ship's crew is accounted for.

The Cuyahoga, one of the oldest ships still travelling the Great Lakes, is on fire again.

The United States Coast Guard said on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, on Friday afternoon that the fire is ongoing. The ship's master and crew are accounted for.

#BREAKING - #USCG personnel are responding to a commercial vessel fire aboard the CUYAHOGA #Ashtabula by providing on-scene information and status updates via deployed boats and a helicopter. Master and crew of the CUYAHOGA are safe and accounted for.

The fire is ongoing. pic.twitter.com/aQNJUQe4II — @USCGGreatLakes

Ashtabula County, the county east of Cleveland off the coast of which the Cuyahoga is located in Lake Erie, is "utilizing maximum county and city fire department resources to put out the fire," the coast guard said.

Coast Guard marine inspectors and investigators are headed to the scene to determine the cause of the blaze, and a safety zone has been established around the ship.

 • Future unclear for the Cuyahoga, one of the oldest Great Lakes ships, after engine room fire

Last May, the Cuyahoga reported an engine room fire, also in Lake Erie while the ship was near Pelee Island. Some of the crew's non-essential personnel were evacuated at the time and no injuries were reported.

But one expert said at the time the ship was built in 1943 and is the oldest Canadian lake boat still in operation, and one year shy of the oldest boat on the Great Lakes, period.
