MAXI YACHT ADRIATIC SERIES: MAXI SAILING REGATTA CIRCUIT IN THE HIGH ADRIATIC

maxi yacht adriatic series

Trieste, February 19, 2021 – The 2021 sailing season opens with a new series dedicated to maxi sailing. Maxi Yacht Adriatic Series (MYAS)  comes from a close collaboration between the cities of Trieste and Venice with the aim of further expanding the regatta field to other locations in the near future.

Yacht Club Adriaco, seeing an opportunity for synergy, teamed up with two other historic sailing clubs in the area, Società Nautica Pietas Julia di Sistiana ( founded in Pola in 1886 ) and Compagnia della Vela di Venezia, to bring together four major historic inshore and offshore regattas in the Adriatic for the maxi fleet. The new format is optimal for owners, maxi teams and organizers of the individual regattas who have all seen steady increases in participation in recent years.

The new circuit takes place between the end of September and the end of October, thereby creating additional competitive opportunities for the maxi season which historically takes place in the Tyrrhenian and Mediterranean from May to September. The first event is the oldest offshore regatta in the Adriatic, Trieste – San Giovanni in Pelago – Trieste (scheduled for the night between Friday 24 and Saturday 25 September) organized by Yacht Club Adriaco. This year’s regatta, whose racing field covers waters in three different countries, will be a special one to celebrate its sixtieth anniversary.

The second event of the Maxi Yacht Adriatic Series is scheduled for the first Sunday in October with the classic Bernetti Trophy sponsored by Società Nautica Pietas Julia , now officially in its fiftieth edition (since it took the name of the club’s late  Guido Bernetti) it actually started four years earlier.

The second edition of the Trieste Venezia – Two Cities One Sea Regatta (organized by Yacht Club Adriaco with logistical assistance from Yacht Club Venezia) is an ideal link between the two seaside cities and marks an important transition scheduled for Sunday 17 October with the Veleziana (edition 14), organized by Compagnia della Vela. All regattas of the MYAS circuit will have a compensation formula with identical  coefficients for each single regatta.

Alberto Leghissa – helmsman, Anywave Safilens –  “We are happy to see how active our Gulf is in promoting sailing and consequently the teams who have always believed in, and continue to invest in, maxi regattas. The new MYAS circuit enters our competitive calendar and we can’t wait to face off with of with our rivals in a month of great events and a compensation formula that allows everyone to best demonstrate their value without compromise.”

Furio Benussi – helmsman, Arca SGR –  “My team fully supports the will and vision of those who activated the synergy between three great Yacht Clubs in the interest of all regatta participants and the public. A maxi challenge is demanding from every angle; knowing that the hard work of the maxi teams, which spreads over 365 days between shipyard, budget management, planning and logistics, can now be maximized in terms of organization, communication and promotion by location and Yacht Clubs, can only gratify and offer incentive to do even more. It is a bar that continues to rise for everyone, which can only bring good to the sailing world.”

Piero Fornasaro De Manzini – President, Adriaco Yacht Club –  “Sailing continues to live and grow with different impulses emerging primarily from the sailing teams that dedicate themselves throughout the year to preparing for their own challenges. In this scenario, Yacht Clubs are no longer spectators but rather play a role in supporting the sailing system, in this case the world of maxi racing yachts, which is one of the many expressions of our sport.  Yacht Club Adriaco believes in this mission along with investing in new generations through the sailing school and youth teams. Our commitment is similar to many other associations. I thank our friends from Società Nautica Pieta Julia and Compagnia della Vela who immediately welcomed our idea by adding their main events to the MYAS circuit.”

Gianfranco Zotta – President, Società Nautica Pietas Julia  – “Three clubs that think and experience sailing in the same way could only join forces in a common project aimed primarily at those who believe in what we are doing and invest directly by taking part in the regattas. It will also be a great opportunity for exchanging ideas and growing for all parties involved, including racers and organizers. We therefore go down this new path with great enthusiasm along with some of the best and most successful teams from our Gulf and beyond.”

Pier Vettor Grimani – President, Compagnia della Vela  –  “Two great cities like Trieste and Venice become even closer through great sailing. Our Club accepted the invitation to participate with the Veleziana, our regatta which continues to grow with each edition. We feel especially gratified because it creates even greater visibility and participation for our regatta and allows us to collaborate with other clubs that love our sport as much as we do. Our Yacht Club friends never stop working, even at this particular moment. They are always thinking about how to always bring new energy to sailing.”

The 2021 sailing season presents itself with a novelty dedicated to maxi sailing. Maxi Yacht Adriatic Series (MYAS) is the name of the new circuit that arises from the close collaboration between two cities such as Trieste and Venice with the aim of further expanding the racing field to other locations in the near future. A synergy, the one proposed by the Adriaco Yacht Club, whose invitation was addressed to two fundamental realities of sailing, not only local as the Nautical Society Pieta Julia of Sistiana (association founded in Pola in 1886) and the Compagnia della Vela of Venice. A collaboration that has led to the uniting, in a single circuit, of four of the most important and historic inshore and offshore regattas in the Adriatic area for the maxi fleet. A format that wants to enhance even more the commitment of both the owners and maxi teams and the organizers of the individual regattas whose participation numbers are constantly increasing. A new circuit that takes place temporally in the period between the end of September and the end of October, placing itself as a further offer of competitions for the maxi season which, historically, takes place in the Tyrrhenian and Mediterranean from May to September. The first appointment is represented by the oldest offshore regatta in the Adriatic, the Trieste – San Giovanni in Pelago – Trieste (scheduled for the night between Friday 24 and Saturday 25 September) organized by the Yacht Club Adriaco. The regatta, which touches the waters of three nations, is presented in a special edition to celebrate its sixtieth anniversary. The second stage of the Maxi Yacht Adriatic Series will be scheduled on the first Sunday of October with the very classic Bernetti Trophy of the Pietas Julia Nautical Company, an event now in its fiftieth edition (since it was named in memory of the President of the Club Guido Bernetti) but which saw the first edition of this same regatta took place four years earlier. The second edition of the Trieste Venezia – Two Cities One Sea Regatta (organized by the Yacht Club Adriaco with the logistical collaboration of the Yacht Club Venezia) will not only serve as an ideal connection point between the two seaside cities and will mark the passing of the baton at the decisive stage , the one scheduled for Sunday 17 October with the Veleziana (edition number 14), the regatta organized by the Compagnia delle Vela. All the regattas of the MYAS circuit will be held with a compensation formula with identical coefficients between each single regatta. Alberto Leghissa – helmsman of Anywave Safilens – “We are happy to see how our Gulf continues to be always very active in promoting sailing and consequently the commitment of teams that have always believed and continue to invest in maxi regattas. . The new MYAS circuit enters our competitive calendar by right and we can’t wait to compare ourselves with all our rivals in a month of great events through a compensation formula that allows everyone to demonstrate, at best and without compromise, their own value.” Furio Benussi – helmsman of Arca SGR – “My team can only support the will and vision of those who wanted to give life to this synergy between three great Yacht Clubs in the interest of all the protagonists of the regattas and not least of the public . A maxi challenge is something very demanding in every respect; knowing that the work of the maxi teams, which lasts 365 days between construction site, budget management, planning and logistics can now be further enhanced in terms of organization, communication and promotion by locations and Yacht Clubs, can only gratify us and offer further stimulus to do even more. It is a bar that continues to rise for everyone and which as such can only do good for our whole world ”. Piero Fornasaro De Manzini – President of the Adriaco Yacht Club – “Sailing continues to live and grow with different impulses that arise primarily from the sailing teams that dedicate themselves throughout the year to preparing their own challenges. A scenario in which the Yacht Clubs do not have to remain spectators but have the burden of supporting and supporting the sailing system as far as they are concerned; in this case the world of maxi racing yachts which represent one of the many expressions of our sport. The Yacht Club Adriaco believes in this mission in parallel with what it does by investing in the new generations, starting with the sailing school and youth teams. A commitment that is common to that of many other associations. Gianfranco Zotta – President of the Pietas Julia Nautical Society – “Three clubs that think and experience sailing in the same way could only join forces in a common project that is aimed primarily at those who believe and invest directly in taking part as a protagonist in our regattas . This will also be a precious opportunity for comparison and further growth for all parties on the field, whether they are racers or organizers. We therefore undertake this new path with great interest together with those who are the most professional and performing teams not only in our Gulf. “ Pier Vettor Grimani – President of the Compagnia della Vela – “Two big cities like Trieste and Venice are now even closer in the sign of great sailing. Our Club immediately accepted the invitation to become part of this format with the Veleziana, our regatta that continues to grow with each edition. An invitation that gratifies us because it offers even greater relevance and participation in our regatta and leads us to collaborate with realities that deeply love our sport. Yacht Club friends who, even in a particular moment like this, never stop working and think about how to always guarantee new energy to sailing “.

Nasce il nuovo circuito Maxi Adriatic Series

maxi yacht adriatic series

Maxi Racing to the Max

Maxi fleet race in St. Tropez

Maxi racing in the Med is hot. Call it a lesson in the value of getting your act together. The game has grown and changed dramatically—and deliberately—with fleets of 50 as the new normal. Ten years ago, none of this was ensured. The secretary general of the International Maxi Association, Andrew McIrvine, tells us, “Rapid change was needed, or it was going to just die.”

How it didn’t “just die” is a story worth telling, and we lean on McIrvine for that. “The International Maxi Association was originally a social club for the owners of 80-footers. That generation was going out as I was invited in,” he says. “The racing had categories that were impossible to define, so people were always gaming it. What’s a racer-cruiser versus a cruiser-racer? And could we ever have effective class splits based on hull length?”

The answer to that, as proven, is no he says. “The categories are now performance-defined, using a single-number IRC rule that includes an accurate weight measurement, not a calculated weight. We photograph the interiors so we know who’s stripping them out. The database includes 155 boats, and it has checks on people who fly too close to the rules. That gives other people the confidence to come out and race.”

The 2023 Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge offers a series of six events, wrapping up in August with the Palermo-Montecarlo Race. That’s 500 miles from Sicily to the Champagne at Yacht Club de Monaco—not to forget the fly-through gate at Porto Cervo along the way and the option of leaving Corsica to port or to starboard. It’s a sporty race in a sporty calendar.

“I truly believe the IMA has made a difference. We’ve attracted a new, younger membership. We’ve added events, and the compass has expanded from the Med to the Caribbean . Whereas we used to have a big mini-maxi contingent and not many boats 80 to 100 feet, in 2022 we suddenly had 12 of the 80- to 100-foot maxis racing, and racing on proper terms. At least two of the current owners are building new boats, which I believe is the sign of a healthy class.

“Then there are the Maxi 72s that have all been modified outside the box they were designed for, but they still race together. They’re more optimized than the other boats, so no one outside their group wants to race against them—they’re a threat—but we can usually give them their own sandbox to play in.”’

And what of the Wallys that seems to have disappeared?

“We gave that up. Wallys come in different sizes, different speeds. I can’t think of a single case of twin Wallys. Now they’ve rejoined according to their ratings, and I think, frankly, the Wally era is over. Luca Bassani’s success with Wallys is such that all designers have copied his concept. When he started, big race boats were neither ergonomic nor pretty, and the decks were bristling with winches. If you go aboard any boat now, it looks like a Wally.

“You could also go the way of Rambler and Comanche, where you pay more and more money to be more and more uncomfortable. Down below, you’re sitting in a carbon-black hole (black because paint adds weight) beside an engine that runs to power the canting keel and the winches. On deck—and it’s true with the Maxi 72s—you find they are exhausting boats to sail because they’re fast upwind at steep angles only. They’re on the edges of the hull to keep the wetted surface to a minimum. The hulls are so wide at the stern, all the crew is hiked hard at the aft end of the boat. And then, in a tack, you’re going from 45 degrees to 45 degrees, and if you don’t get it right running across the deck, you’re in trouble. On a clean deck, there’s nothing to grab on to.”

Placing itself somewhere in between the extremes of the grand-prix set and the leaning cruisers, Nautor has a new ClubSwan 80 it’s touting as a one-design class. Loro Piana brought Hull No. 1 to the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup last year at Porto Cervo, and the boat performed well. Weighing the odds of developing a successful one-design, it’s worth remembering that the ClubSwan 50 had its skeptics, who were proven wrong. But the 80 is a take-no-prisoners statement. It’s a major turn for a company whose classic racing events feature boats with furniture. Now we’re talking all carbon with a canting keel, a tacking daggerboard, push-button controls, twin rudders, design by Juan K, and construction in Italy by Persico—very fashion-forward. I’m sure you had a look at that boat.

“It’s a fascinating project, and it looks extreme, but it has, theoretically, cruising potential,” McIrvine says. “Inside, it’s all black carbon—artfully crafted—accented with strips of mahogany veneer. No furniture, but you have the option of adding interior modules for cruising. And we shouldn’t overlook the carbon-fiber bidet in the owner’s head.”

Clearly, Nautor thinks the IMA has a good thing going, and it wants a bigger piece of it. Beyond rational class definitions, one very important thing is resonating, McIrvine says. The owners are driving.

“Our rule is critical, and we are strict about imposing it, with rest breaks allowed,” he says. “Generally, it takes a lifetime to amass the wealth to race a big boat. By the end of a day race, most owners are exhausted. Which is not to say that amateur drivers are on their own. An astonishing number of names you know show up to whisper, ‘A little higher, sir, a little lower.’ That keeps the standards high, and it’s a reminder that being a pro sailor is a dodgy profession. There are only 10 TP52s in the Med, for example, only nine SailGP teams in the world and five America’s Cup teams. However, we don’t restrict driving in the superyacht group at all.”

The other boat debuting at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup was FlyingNikka , which raised the concern of foiling monohulls threatening the order. “ Nikka showed that she can sail in the fleet safely, so at St. Tropez we put her in a class where her rating was absurd. The boat would do 35 knots in the right conditions, but they couldn’t keep her on foils going upwind. Tacks were agonizingly slow. What Roberto Lacorte is looking for is line honors in longer races.”

The venues where maxis can and now gather are also a draw. The Caribbean was the inevitable expansion opportunity beyond the Med, where it’s obvious that people like to go to St. Tropez, Capri, Sorrento, Giraglia and so on. Neither coast of the United States can accommodate such a fleet.

“Water depth is a huge challenge for race committees,” McIrvine says. “A lot of the Bay of Naples is 1,200 to 1,500 feet deep. Off St. Tropez it’s much, much deeper. We’re using MarkSetBot, which is promising. It’s not 100 percent reliable, but an upside beyond remote control is that you can’t wrap your keel around an anchor line because there is no anchor line [on a GPS‑directed robot mark].

“Our people are selective about where they choose to race. One owner told me it costs him $750,000 to take his boat, team and containers to Porto Cervo for five days. No one wants to spend that kind of money on a badly run regatta, so it’s a conservative bunch.

“The IMA has a small board of directors backed up by a dynamic, insightful team. IMA costs are supported by membership subscription except for Rolex, which has been fantastic. When I started with the IMA, the Rolex people told me, ‘We’ve been giving you money, but your people just put it in the bank.’ I said, ‘I’m sure I can fix that,’ and I have. There is a lot of travel now, a much more glam yearbook, a lot of publicity. About half the boats racing last year were flying the IMA flag.”

So, everything is coming up roses? “There are still supply-chain issues around securing building materials. Outside of maxi racing, the 30- to 40-foot range is falling off a cliff, except for shorthanded distance racing. Looking ahead, we still don’t know if we are in a recession or a hiccup, but in previous recessions, maxi racing has gone on, looking good for two or three years longer than you might expect. Then the boats stay on the dock.”

Triestinians to conquer the Tyrrhenian Sea with the Maxi 100 ARCA SGR

maxi yacht adriatic series

A challenge that, with the pennants of the Yacht Club Adriaco, the Yacht Club de Monaco and the strong message of One Ocean Foundation, will touch twelve of the most important regattas on the 2021 calendar divided between the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic seas. Trophies that have already enriched the Fast and Furio Sailing Team’s trophy case several times in the past through the successes achieved in the Team’s previous competitive programs.

maxi yacht adriatic series

The renewed partnership in 2021 between the Arca Fondi SGR brand and the multi-titled Fast and Furio Sailing Team has already had a winning prologue last May 16 in Ravenna at the first Challenge dedicated to the 30th Anniversary of the Moro di Venezia (winner in 1991 in San Diego of the IACC World Championship) but will come into full swing at the long-awaited 151 Miglia (a race already won by the Team in 2018) that will start from Livorno on Sunday, May 30.

ARCA SGR is aiming to win line honors in this event that has established itself in just a few years as one of the most important in the Mediterranean and, weather permitting, to rewrite the regatta record (set by the American Rambler in 2019 at 13 hours, 50 minutes and 58 seconds).

The next event will be two weeks later with the iconic Rolex Giraglia, a Trophy coveted by any sailor (already won by Furio Benussi in 2001 and 2004). The regatta, which this year will start from San Remo and arrive in Genoa after passing the Giraglia rock, will have as its prologue the coastal regatta between Genoa and San Remo (June 13).

At the end of August, the Team will return to racing at the Palermo – Monte Carlo offshore challenge (the Team won on this course in 2007 and 2008), a must-do regatta for the entire Maxi world, before heading to Portocervo for the week-long Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup (won in 2001 and 2008), a regatta that alone is worth a season.

ARCA SGR will then make its way to the Adriatic where, over the course of a month between Trieste and Venice, seven races will be held in sequence in which the Fast and Furio Sailing Team will try to reconfirm its record string of victories and unbeaten streak (marked in 2018 with 5 wins out of 5). On Friday, Sept. 29, ARCA SGR will be at the start of its home regatta (Yacht Club Adriaco), the 60th edition of the Trieste – San Giovanni – Trieste the oldest offshore regatta in the Adriatic, for which the Fast and Furio Sailing Team holds the title (in addition to the successes in 2001 and 2019), as well as the record. This challenge will also be the opening event of the new Maxi Yacht Adriatic Series (MYAS) circuit strongly advocated by the Yacht Club Adriaco together with the other two ultracentennial clubs of the Adriatic (the Società Nautica Pietas Julia and the Compagnia della Vela Venezia) and contested with IRC formula. On the first long weekend in October, ARCA SGR will race in the Portopiccolo Maxi Race (victories in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2020) and, subsequently, in the 50th Bernetti Trophy (also valid as the second MYAS stage) in whose roll of honor the Team appears five times (1999, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2020). The second Sunday in October is synonymous with the Barcolana, whose Trophy has already been in the hands of the men of the Fast and Furio Sailing Team four times (2005, 2016, 2017, 2018), and where ARCA SGR comes to the starting line with one mission.

On Thursday, October 14, ARCA SGR will return to compete in an offshore race, defending the IRC title and line honors won last year in the first edition of the Trieste Venezia – Two Cities One Sea (also valid as the third MYAS leg). The regatta will therefore be the prologue of the competitive weekend in Venice where the “grand prix” of the Venice Hospitality Challenge (regatta won in 2015, 2017, 2018) will be held on Saturday, October 16, in which ARCA SGR will be paired as always with the Ca’ Sagredo Hotel, before the last commitment of the season with the Veleziana (Trophy won in 2015), an event that is worth double as the final and decisive act for the ranking of the Maxi Yacht Adriatic Series circuit.

The Fast and Furio Sailing Team has always pursued one goal in the composition of its crew: to welcome young Italian sailors with great potential by placing them side by side with experienced athletes on a path of common growth under a competitive profile. One example of this is the welcome return aboard of Nicholas Brezzi, a former Italian canoeist who experienced his own transformation into a sailor living his first experiences with Furio Benussi’s boys and who, thanks to his talent, managed to be among the immovable starters aboard Luna Rossa in the last America’s Cup challenge.

Friendship has always been one of the key factors in the Team’s successes and the element that for everyone is the real “turbo” on board the maxi 100 ARCA SGR. Joining Furio Benussi in the role of tactician will be Lorenzo “Rufo” Bressani, as well as on board will not lack, also this season, the experience of Stefano Spangaro. One new addition to complete ARCA SGR’s afterguard is the name of Vittorio Bissaro, Olympian in Rio 2016 and Nacra 17 World Champion.

A MESSAGE NOT ONLY FOR THE SEA

The Fast and Furio Sailing Team is strongly convinced of how a challenge in search of success today can no longer be so exclusively under the competitive profile, but must contain within itself concrete objectives aimed at social issues, through actions that can take many forms.

Furio Benussi and the Fast and Furio Sailing Team have been promoters of One Ocean Foundation and Charta Smeralda since the first hour, the values of which have been conveyed by the team on various occasions since 2018, addressing in particular the younger generation and children. This is not a random target because all team members have a deep connection to the sea and sailing, through a personal passion that began at the helm of an optimist and has never been extinguished from there.

All activity of the maxi 100 ARCA SGR, both in and outside of racing, will be geared toward safeguarding the blue planet. All materials (starting with the fittings of today’s press conference and continuing with those of the team’s hospitality) are made exclusively of recycled materials and certified “PVC free” as well as all plastic material that the team will use during the season will be recycled. Nothing will be left to chance, and compliance with the Charta Smeralda code of ethics will be ensured by two “Reco” (ecological managers for everything related to team life both at sea and on the dock). Acqua Mood will provide support in full compliance through a new 100% recycled and recyclable bottle.

The team will also wear Slam’s technical garments in the 2021 season including a thermal jacket made from a plant-derived yarn using coffee bean shells.

In addition to fulfilling the role of “Ocean Defenders,” the Fast and Furio Sailing Team is also committed to strongly communicating, in deed, additional messages dedicated especially to younger children. Indeed, in 2021 the team will again be engaged alongside the “Io Do Una Mano” Association strongly supported by partner Acqua Mood with the aim of raising awareness of the many possibilities of reusing plastic; because in addition to safeguarding the environment, a proper use of plastic can serve to achieve tangible goals such as those at which the “Io Do Una Mano” Association is working, which succeeds in transforming recycled plastic into artificial limbs for children who, due to illness or injury, need such prostheses using current 3D technologies. A key solution to ensure the best quality of life for these children and their families, particularly in the stages of children’s growth and physical evolution that require continuous updates and responses in immediate time.

The Fast and Furio Sailing Team will then also be close to children through the “Sailing for Children” project signed by “Il Porto dei Piccoli” together with the Gaslini Children’s Hospital in Genoa: on the occasion of the team’s presence in Genoa for the Rolex Giraglia, the Fast and Furio Sailing Team crew will organize very special training sessions in which they will have the pleasure of having little sailors on board who, more than anyone else, know and live the meaning of the word “challenge” with courage on a daily basis.

Furio Benussi’s work as an ambassador of the Laureus Foundation also continues in 2021.

The 2021 racing season of the maxi 100 ARCA SGR is made possible thanks to the synergy with Amagis Capital, Pacorini, CiviBank, Foss Marai, Ca’ Sagredo Hotel, Dobner, RH+, Armare Ropes, Slam, Marlin Yacht Paints, and Acqua Mood.

THE STATEMENTS

Furio Benussi, ARCA SGR helmsman and team leader of the Fast and Furio Sailing Team – “I’m really excited, as I’ve never been on the eve of a racing season, thinking about the huge program that awaits us as much at sea as on land. A program that I and the whole team care so much about and we will carry out with an energy that we have never had in these terms in the past. This is an articulated, intense challenge for which we have never stopped working, day in and day out, even when we have been away from the race course; in this sense I must thank all my guys from the bottom of my heart, especially those who are never in the spotlight and who have made this possible. My happiness also stems from thinking about the extraordinary synergy that has been established alongside and at the foundation of this sporting and non-sporting project, among all the team partners who have believed and continue to push us toward ever more beautiful and ambitious goals with a rare passion. In a few hours we will be in Livorno for our first 2021 regatta in the Tyrrhenian Sea, with a hull that has a new soul because, although externally you don’t see any particular aesthetic changes, the heart and soul of ARCA SGR have been deeply renewed in search of further margins of improvement in performance in all conditions. We therefore look forward to measuring ourselves against the best opponents in each of the challenges that await us in this never-so-anticipated racing season.”

Ugo Loeser, CEO of Arca Fondi SGR – “We are proud to be alongside the challenge of the Fast and Furio Sailing Team again this season, continuing to recognize ourselves in the goals, passion and desire to grow day by day by all the men who live and share this adventure that transcends the simple sporting aspect. The choice to be with our name on board this Maxi was born years ago on the basis of the Team’s successes and today finds further confirmation in a path that looks to the present and the future with a strong mutual identification and a vision that follows hand in hand with the team’s achievements. We think that sailing is one of the most effective and quality areas to develop communication and visibility themes of a brand like Arca Fondi SGR that bases its daily work and the achievement of its goals through a great team spirit in which is grafted a strong passion and continuous evolution in the search for the best performance. Today in asset management, performance is combined with sustainability and compliance with ESG criteria; this is also why we identify with the many initiatives of the fantastic crew of the Fast and Furio Sailing Team.”

Riccardo Bonadeo, One Ocean Foundation executive vice president. – “As a sailor, I am pleased to find that our whole world continues to be at the forefront and protagonist in actively contributing to the spread of One Ocean Foundation’s message. Our Foundation continues to grow and expand its activities in multiple directions, and I am truly proud of Furio Benussi and his entire team for the inexhaustible energy and commitment they put into protecting the sea, addressing in particular the new generations to whom the legacy of our planet will go.”

Piero Fornasaro de Manzini, President Yacht Club Adriaco – “Our Club is proud to be with its own pennant, together with our friends from the Yacht Club de Monaco, on board the maxi ARCA SGR. A challenge that is based on a true cohesion of objectives, sporting, technical and human skills among a multiplicity of subjects that Furio Benussi has managed, with the determination that distinguishes him, to catalyze around his Team: a model and a concrete, clear and sustainable project that has no equal in the panorama of Italian offshore sailing.”

The (Really) Big Boats Have Arrived

Those enormous, pricey Maxi yachts have joined the Caribbean racing season and will be at Les Voiles de St. Barth.

maxi yacht adriatic series

By John Clarke

It has taken a few years, delayed by the pandemic, but formal Maxi yacht racing is coming to the Caribbean, considerably increasing the competitive opportunities sailors have to race their sleek monohull behemoths that can reach 100 feet long.

Les Voiles de St. Barth Richard Mille, which begins on Sunday, will join the inaugural I.M.A. Caribbean Maxi Challenge, a four-stop event created to increase the participation of Maxis in those regattas and draw more Maxis to the Caribbean sailing circuit.

“Maxi sailors are really excited because this increases the standards and quality, and the number of regattas they can sail,” said Benoît de Froidmont, president of the International Maxi Association . “Now we will have proper starts and courses.”

And more opportunities to sail their boats, which are expensive to maintain and cost as much as $10 million — owners want to get as much out of their boats as possible. “The biggest sin is to let these boats just sit,” said Ken Keefe, a former America’s Cup sailor who manages and sails on Vesper, a Maxi 72.

After a two-year pause for many regattas around the world because of the pandemic, sailors are excited about the new series, Keefe said. But many are also practicing a degree of restraint because of Covid and the war in Ukraine.

“Everyone is still a little shellshocked coming out of Covid,” he said. “We are all counting our blessings, but are more reserved this year — we won’t be dancing on tables. But the overall feeling is: Let’s get back to sailing, let’s get the band back together.”

Modeled after the races in the Mediterranean Maxi circuits, the Caribbean challenge invites Maxis over 60 feet long to compete February through May at the Caribbean 600 in Antigua, the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, Les Voiles de St. Barth, and at Antigua Sailing Week.

To qualify for the series, sailors must compete in a minimum of two of the events, though this may eventually be increased to three once the circuit is better established, said James Boyd, an I.M.A. spokesman. Teams that compete in more than two events get to discard their worst result.

Technically, the addition of the Caribbean Maxi Challenge adds to I.M.A.-sanctioned Maxi events, but not all Maxi sailors were planning on sailing all four of the Caribbean events. Many will sail in just two or three and win on cumulative performance points, de Froidmont said.

Keefe, who manages logistics for Vesper, which includes transporting the boat around the world, said it would be possible to do all four of the Caribbean regattas and still take part in the Mediterranean sailing seasons.

“It can work out to move these boats around and boat in nice places and do it in a safe manner,” Keefe said. “The trick is to get the boat out of the Caribbean as soon as the series ends to avoid the hurricane season.”

The first stop of the series was the Caribbean 600 in Antigua. Comanche, a 100-foot Verdier design, won the regatta, followed by the VO65 Sailing Poland and the VO70 I Love Poland.

Conditions were challenging. One sailor told the I.M.A website that the race was one of the hardest in the world.

“It is like a heavyweight boxing match — the lefts and the rights just keep coming at you and you wait for that knockout punch,” said Richard Clarke, a tactician for Warrior Won. “No lead is safe until the very end.”

The Russian-owned Comanche, a recent trans-Atlantic ocean race winner and a dominating presence in regattas, withdrew from the Caribbean Maxi Challenge after World Sailing, the sports’ governing body, banned Russian participation because of the war in Ukraine. Skorpios, a ClubSwan 125 Maxi yacht, also withdrew under similar circumstances.

“There’s an awareness of what’s going on in Ukraine,” Keefe said. “The Russians have touched our sport in a strange way.”

The second stop, the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, held in early March, was four days of racing. Sailing Poland took first, Janssen de Jong-DutchSail second and I Love Poland third.

The third stop is the Les Voiles de St. Barth, and the fourth and final is Antigua Sailing Week, which starts April 30.

The winners of Maxi racing receive only a trophy and bragging rights. “It remains an ancient sport,” de Froidmont said. “There is no prize money, just very passionate people who enjoy the challenge.”

The number of Maxis competing has increased over the past several years, he said, and should continue to rise.

Boyd, the I.M.A. spokesman, said it might take a few years to build a deep fleet for the Caribbean Maxi Challenge.

“This is the first year,’’ he said, “so we imagine it will take a few years for this to gain traction fully. Nonetheless, we are pleased with the Maxi turnout.

“The Maxi participation in Les Voiles de St. Barth is also looking strong with I.M.A. members participating from both sides of the Atlantic,” Boyd added. Twelve Maxis are scheduled to race.

Currently leading the series is the VO70 I Love Poland ahead of the Farr 100 Leopard 3.

“But neither is competing in St. Barth, so it could be that we will see some new teams move into the lead after St Barth and Antigua,” Boyd said.

“We have some incredible competition this year,” said Keefe, who has won the Voiles de St. Barth four times. “I can’t wait.”
