This is probably my favourite of the Gala Casino's in Glasgow. I first went when I lost a bunch of girls on a nightout in Common around 2am and had to kill time till 4 to get our taxi that was booked. I was so drunk I cannot believe I got in. Presumably they thought I would waste money in here, and, they were right. As Adele eloquently pointed out, when you sign up you need to get your picture taken and get a membership card. Getting my photo taken at crazy o'clock was not flattering. That said, it's surprisingly easy to sign up for a Casino. It's nice inside with a good selection of roulette and black jack tables plus a really good selection of electronic gambling games. Gala do free soft drinks at the bar which is epic for sobering up after a nightout. It's about the most glamorous Casino I have been to in Glasgow, which says alot for the rest.

This casino seems to be the place to head when you don't want the night to end, once the pubs and clubs have chucked out and people are still up for some drinking. I've only ever been here once and encountered the less than flattering experience of having your picture taken for membership at 4am when you're feeling less than glamorous. A little seedy and full of drunk folks and sleazy guys, this place is more vile than Vegas.

We can think of no better place to begin our journey than by painting a picture of the history and heritage of riverboats and gambling . Back in the 1800s, the situation for gambling in the USA was a bit different than today. The Mississippi Great River was the lifeblood of American industry and commerce. Thanks to advances in transportation technology, traders were no longer content to load up their horses and carts and instead took full advantage of the connections that river transport could offer.

If you’ve ever read anything about sailors, you’ll know that traveling over water can be a long and tedious endeavor, which is why boats and game of chance have a long illustrious history . In order to pass the time, passengers and merchants on these riverboats would gamble onboard to keep themselves entertained on long voyages.

The Big Muddy

Before you knew it, riverboats began to entice professional gamblers and those seeking to keep a low profile. This was in part due to states prohibiting gambling ashore, making the use of riverboats a clever means of sidestepping local gambling laws as the water freeways were largely unregulated.

As the Mississippi River bordered several different states, it was the perfect legal grey area . This led to riverboats becoming popular entertainment destinations that mixed live music, dancing, and gambling, if only for a few hours. However, the rise of the railroad and the American Civil War in the latter half of the 19th century saw the popularity of water transport and riverboat casinos decline significantly.

It wasn’t until 1904 when several states softened their hardline stance on riverside gambling. The first ‘legitimate’ riverboat casino, the City of Traverse, set sail on Lake Michigan which signaled the start of riverboat gambling becoming an organized commercial operation. As you may know, whenever there’s money to be made, it isn’t long until the government wants to get involved.

The Road to Regulation

Early riverboat casinos were quite restrictive in terms of what they were legally allowed to do. Gambling could only take place during a short cruise that lasted several hours. In 1951, Lyndon Johnson drafted the Transportation of Gambling Devices Act, which made the transportation of gambling devices illegal across state lines unless it was legal in the next state.

It wasn’t until the late 1980s that the idea of revitalizing this golden era of riverboat gambling re-emerged. As a result, several states introduced laws which allowed gambling on water vessels and set the legal framework with which they still operate in today. Pittsburgh's rivers flood roads and landmarks as clean up begins

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Several rivers throughout the Pittsburgh area have crested at or near major flood stages after record rainfall fell across Western Pennsylvania. 

The National Weather Service says the Ohio River in Pittsburgh appears to have crested just after 6 a.m. at 28.37 feet, just shy of the major flood stage mark at 28.37 feet.

The river level is at its highest point in nearly two decades and flood warnings continue for the area through tomorrow morning with flooding ongoing in most low level spots. 

Downtown Pittsburgh landmarks swamped by water

After river levels crested, people stopped by the North Shore  to take in the sights and see Pittsburgh's landmarks like Point State Park buried by water. Valerie Stout was one of them.

As she looked at the Ohio River, it took her a minute to realize what she was seeing.

"Oh, my goodness!" Stout said. "That's what I came over here to see, the Point, and it's not here."

Point State Park was barely visible with the only marker being the outline of the fountain. The rest was under several feet of water, appearing to be part of the three rivers.

Three Rivers Trail also flooded, with the light poles, and trees slightly sticking out.

Water even submerged the boat launch leading up to the steps at the Steelers' Acrisure Stadium, where you could see just a bit of the map.

Butler County cleaning up after creek rises 

Thursday is all about the cleanup after flooding across the Pittsburgh area, with portable generators and pumps working overtime in Butler County, where the Connoquenessing Creek spilled over its banks.

Water levels have gone down but at one point in time, the creek overflowed, and the water made its way into basements of those who live nearby.

In one home on Main Street in Renfrew, they had two of feet water in their basement that was still being pumped out Thursday.

Edward McDonald came by to help at his son and daughter-in-law's home. The creek overflowed and filled the basement with two feet of water.

"There's no controlling this river, it's going to rise and get into these houses all the time," McDonald said. 

The water came out of its bank and flowed through Meridian Road and Main Street.

A woman had to be rescued from the flood waters.

"We had to have the water rescue team from Butler come down, took a raft down to her and rescued her then moved the car out," said Penn Township Fire Chief Bill Glace. 

Glace says the water levels were high, but now it's better. All the roads have reopened.

"Fortunately they have most of their equipment hung from the ceiling, so they don't have any damage to their water heater or furnace, so the only thing they have to worry about is the well purifier," McDonald said. 

Flooding impacts Pittsburgh traffic

A number of routes through the city of Pittsburgh have been heavily flooded and are making a major impact from a traffic standpoint.

PennDOT has shut down access to the 10th Street Bypass and the "Bathtub" section of the Parkway East, forcing drivers to find alternate ways around town.

That section of the interstate begins to flood when the river reaches 25' and the National Weather Service says that river levels have reached nearly 28 feet. It's unclear when the two sections of roadway will reopen. 

When river levels reach the major flood stage at 28 feet, Neville Island, the Wood Street "T" station, and Fort Pitt Boulevard can be impacted. 

The Riverwalk along the North Shore of the Allegheny River is under several feet of water that isn't expected to recede before Friday's Pirates home opener.

Significant flooding across the region

Outside of the city of Pittsburgh, the Monongahela River at Braddock and the Youghiogheny River at Sutersville have crested at major flood stages and will now start to recede. 

At Sandcastle Water Park in West Homestead, the Monongahela River has risen high enough to flood parts of the park. 

At Olde Stonewall Golf Club in Ellwood City, several parts of the course and under several feet of water.

In Greene County, a hillside is falling away from under a building that sits above Ten Mile Creek County Park.

A wet stretch of weather for our area

We just had the wettest three-day stretch of weather since September of 2018.  

We recorded 4.1 inches of rain since Monday at the Pittsburgh airport

Light rain and drizzle will continue to keep the ground damp. Colder weather will continue conditions that are prime for landslide movement.

There are winter weather advisories and even a winter storm warning for parts of West Virginia due to snow today and tomorrow

Highs today will hit the mid 40s with lows in the mid 30s and it will be cloudy.

Emergency services sped to Glasgow 's Broomielaw after a serious collision involving a cyclist and lorry earlier today.

Police have cordoned off a section of the Broomielaw following a crash near the Casino at the junction of Oswald Street at 10.10am.

Officers and other emergency services are still on the scene with around six police cars and ambulance and Police Scotland' s specialist collision investigation team.

It is unclear whether there are any injuries at this time.

A police spokesperson said: "Officers are currently in attendance following a serious crash on Broomielaw, near the Casino, which police were called to at 10.10am on Friday, 27 January, 2023.

"The crash involved a cyclist and a HGV. Emergency services remain at the scene and the road is currently closed."

Glasgow City Council confirmed the road would be closed for some time and drivers should avoid the area.

A spokesperson said: "The Broomielaw is completely closed to all traffic between Oswald Street and York Street due to a serious road traffic accident.

"The road is likely to remain closed for some time and emergency services are currently attending the incident.

"Road users should avoid the area if possible and expect delays in the city centre as traffic diverts."
