Savannah Riverboat

Savannah Riverboat Cruises was established in Savannah, Georgia in 1991 under the direction of experienced Captain, Jonathan H. Claughton.  Savannah’s antebellum charm, with flowing Spanish moss hanging from stoic live oaks and welcoming shady squares, hearkens back to the days when paddle driven riverboats full of tourists and locals dotted the Savannah River.

With the founding of the company, Capt. Claughton sought to bring a dinner cruise tour to Savannah.  After doing his research, he invested in the River Queen, a 400 passenger vessel.  This riverboat served him, and his guests,w ell as he and his crew welcomed those in Savannah to learn the history of this great port city.

In 1997,after six years of success, Capt. Claughton expanded the company and added an additional riverboat, the 550 passenger Georgia Queen.

Both riverboats feature two climate-controlled dining decks and an open-air third deck.  Decked out in traditional red, white and blue riverboat colors, these elegantly appointed boats cannot help but draw visitors back to a time when gentility and relaxation was always in vogue.

In winter 2007, the company welcomed the newest edition to their fleet, the 600 passenger New Savannah River Queen.  This boat features three climate controlled dining rooms, three bars, and a top deck snack shop.  The Savannah River Queen has two large dining areas perfect for large groups and an open air, covered third deck patio space.  The third deck also features a VIP room capable of accommodating 36 people.

The company has expanded, developed and established itself as an anchor among historic River Street’s  icons.

When asked what makes his company successful, Capt Claughton mused, “If you give good service, the public will flock to the waterfront and enjoy what you have to offer.  I cannot help to think this is the winning formula if you run a small ferry boat or a multi-state excursion operation.”

When asked about the future, Claughton said, “We will continue to be a center stage fixture on River Street.  We have seen a slow and steady growth through the years.  I know we will continue to expand.”

This expansion has led to the arrival in 2016 of a new riverboat, the Georgia Queen.  The Georgia Queen measures an impressive 230 ft long,64 ft wide and a towering 68 ft tall and features three grand ballrooms with over 15,000 square feet of dining space, a 5,000 square foot, fully open-air top deck with patio seating.  The entire boat encompasses a total of 38,000 square feet.  She can carry 1,000 passengers plus 200 crew, which makes her the size of a small cruise ship.

The riverboat tours leave the dock right next to the exact location where General Oglethrope first landed on the river front and head upriver, into the Port of Savannah, and then turn around and head back under the Eugene Talmadge Memorial Bridge and past the historic river front.  The tours continue downriver passing the world famous Waving Girl, Florence Martus, through the ship yards and just past the tip of Hutchinson Island and Old Fort Jackson.  There, the boat circles back upriver to arrive gently back at the dock.

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

The Georgia Queen and Savannah Riverboat Cruises

Savannah riverboat cruises’: the georgia queen..

It is a 1,000-passenger riverboat that traveled 2,800 miles down the Mississippi River, down and around the shorelines of Florida to call Savannah her home.

The Georgia Queen is a great way to see the city and is one of the most unique social gathering destinations in Savannah, but its impact on local tourism and economic development will be substantial with the added ability to attract large conferences and conventions.”

The Georgia Queen Savannah Riverboat

Built in 1995 as a luxury floating casino for 14 million dollars, the majestic 1800s paddlewheel-style riverboat spent several years traveling the Mississippi River. When gambling legislation changed, allowing land-based casinos to open, the riverboat underwent a four-million-dollar makeover. Today, this spectacular paddlewheel-style riverboat acts as Savannah Riverboat Cruises’ Savannah River Queen’s grand sister ship.

The Georgia Queen measures an impressive 230 feet long, 64 feet wide and towering at 68 feet tall.

She is among the top elite in the country with a capacity of 1,000 passengers, plus a 200-person crew, making her the size of a small cruise ship at 38,000 square feet. The ship’s entertainment spaces include three grand ballrooms with over 15,000 square feet of dining space. It offers more than 5,000 square feet of open-air top deck space with patio seating. This affords more than enough room to accommodate a romantic riverboat wedding on the Savannah River.

The Georgia Queen also boasts a multi-deck, fully equipped gourmet kitchen. It is also equipped with a large service elevator, making traveling between galleys discrete and easy. This onboard kitchen will change the entire dining experience for guests. This will allow for more plated dinner opportunities and flexibility in menu items.

The Georgia Queen

“Experiencing Savannah from our beautiful riverfront is such a unique experience,” Visit Savannah President Joseph Marinelli said.

“Savannah Riverboat’s guests are treated to refreshing breezes, fun entertainment, and some of the best southern cuisine Savannah offers. They can view Georgia’s oldest city as her founders did many years ago when they arrived by river in 1733. Jonathan and his team have been providing unforgettable narrated tours of Savannah’s harbor for 25 years. The Georgia Queen is a game-changer for their business. It will be another valuable asset to the thriving tourism and hospitality offerings of Savannah.”

Both Joe Biden and Donald Trump have said that if they occupy the White House come January, America will be making more things in America. But who will have the skills to do those jobs? For our  Jobs IRL  series, Marketplace’s David Brancaccio traveled to Georgia and  examined three efforts to develop the abilities workers from all walks of life will need to expand the U.S. manufacturing base. Today, we look at jobs and job training on a more atomic level.

What if I told you there is a place with warm winters where they’re hiring like crazy — even though you have zero experience in the industry?

“We have about 9,000 hires over the next five years, so the demand is huge,” said Richard Sprague, senior vice president of Environment, Safety, Health & Quality at Savannah River Nuclear Solutions.

He pointed to the key qualification he wants, something that doesn’t fit neatly on a resume: “Discipline.”

Discipline, as in, your act is together and you do what you say you’re doing. Beyond that, you need U.S. citizenship and a high school diploma or a GED for a job located where South Carolina and Georgia meet. That doesn’t mean you’re in, but you’ll be considered.

And here’s the thing: They pay you as they train. Julia Shealy teaches chemistry, physics and more at Augusta Technical College, one of the campuses providing some of the classwork for jobs in “mostly operations, but all kinds of different jobs.”

“It’s fun to connect with [students] over this stuff,” she said, “especially when they find that I do have a background working with my hands and being in a sense of the word ‘blue collar,’ just as much as they are.'”

Now here’s the part where we go into detail tell you who is doing all this hiring. In a government-issue shuttle van, we’re guided through a dense forest of loblolly and longleaf woven with miles of curlicue steam pipes for power and heat. These 300 square miles — just about the same size as all of New York City’s boroughs — is the Savannah River Site, overseen by the U.S. Department of Energy. It was first set up in the Cold War to make materials like plutonium for nuclear weapons.

The site was created more than 50 years ago. These days, it’s a place where you’ll want to do a lot of things carefully — from dimming down highly toxic plutonium into something no longer weapons-grade to processing spent fuel rods pulled from nuclear reactors. There’s also a national laboratory.

“This is what I really love about this program, is we bring them in as full-time employees. So that means you’re getting pay, you’re getting vacation, you’re getting a 401(k),” said BooBoo Roberts, apprenticeship school program manager for Savannah River Nuclear Solutions.

There’s a part-time system for people working on college degrees, but she’s talking about the full-time program that now has a hundred employee-apprentices.

After realizing college wasn’t his thing, Stephen Young Jr. spent 25 years working at a tire factory where production was intense. “Everything had to be done as fast as possible. We needed it yesterday,” he said.

Here at Savannah River speed is not the thing: “If you’re in a rush, you’re doing it wrong. A mistake might potentially get somebody hurt or way worse.”

Lauren Olly was a bartender and server and is partly through the eight-month program.

“We’re getting a good nuclear fundamentals certificate,” she said. “And then like today, I just learned how to put on a respirator.”

“It’s a good bit of math,” she went on. “But I mean, it’s not too hard. And hopefully, you know, when we’re out on the field, the engineers will do the math for us.”

Terrence Tillman, with a long career as a restaurant manager and bartender, is his 50s. But when he and his wife had a serious car accident, he felt it was time for a change.

“So this program makes it where you can totally put one down, pick this one up, and you have income and education while you’re doing it. So you don’t have to fear and it takes away the stress,” he said.

For security reasons, the people in the apprenticeship have access to confidential details about the actual work. The starting salary for most in the program is in the range of $70,000 — just about what they pay the sheriff in the surrounding county here.

Major concrete work completed on Savannah River disposal unit

riverboat savannah

With the placement of 25 wall sections, 208 support columns, and 7 roof sections, work crews have completed all major concrete placements for the megavolume Saltstone Disposal Unit (SDU) 10 at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina, according to the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management.

When complete, SDU 10 will be the fifth giant unit built at the site that can hold up to 33 million gallons of saltstone. More than 20,000 cubic yards of concrete are needed to build each SDU, using about 700,000 total labor hours.

Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC), the site’s liquid waste contractor for DOE-EM, manages the construction and operation of the SDUs. Subcontractor DN Tanks completed the concrete construction, and subcontractor Quality Plus Services completed the site preparation for the project. The concrete work came just weeks after SRMC received authorization to operate SDU 9 .

The process: The SDUs are the end of the site’s salt waste processing path. The Salt Waste Processing Facility (SWPF) separates and concentrates the highly radioactive waste from the less radioactive salt waste, producing a decontaminated salt solution that is sent to the Saltstone Production Facility. There, the solution is mixed with dry materials to make a cement-like grout. The grout is then pumped into the SDUs, where it solidifies into a monolithic, nonhazardous form.

These large SDUs are designed to support the increased material from the SWPF. According to DOE-EM, the new SDUs will result in more than $500 million in cost savings over the life of the liquid waste program, because they require less infrastructure and materials than the 80 smaller SDUs that were previously planned for the site.

Up next: Next on the to-do list for SDU 10 is to wrap it with 341 miles of cable around the exterior walls. The cable ensures the structural integrity of the walls while grout is being added, before the material within turns into hardened saltstone.

Work is also underway for the final pair of SDUs—11 and 12—adjacent to SDU 10. Mud mat installation for SDU 11 is scheduled to start later this summer, while the mud mat addition for SDU 12 is scheduled to begin in the fall. The mud mats provide a solid surface for the SDU concrete floor.

Quotable: “Since the first mega unit, SDU 6, was built in 2017, EM has not slowed down on construction of these critical structures,” said Jim Folk, DOE-Savannah River assistant manager for waste disposition. “These SDUs ensure that the decontaminated salt solution will have a place to be safely and permanently disposed of. Completion of the concrete placements for SDU 10 is another step forward on the mission to clean up the legacy radioactive waste at the Savannah River Site.”

With the placement of 25 wall sections, 208 support columns, and 7 roof sections, work crews have completed all major concrete placements for the megavolume Saltstone Disposal Unit (SDU) 10 at the Savannah River Site, according to the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management.

Savannah River Site reaches construction milestone in ongoing cleanup of radioactive materials

riverboat savannah

The U.S Department of Energy Office of Environmental Management recently reached  another milestone in the construction of large scale disposal units necessary to wrap up the cleanup program at the Savannah River Site.

During its inception in the 1950s, the Savannah River Site in Aiken produced plutonium and tritium for use in the manufacture of nuclear weapons. In 1992, the site's focus shifted toward environmental cleanup and nuclear materials management.

Environmental Management crews have completed all major concrete placements for Saltstone Disposal Unit 10, according to a news release. More than 20,000 cubic yards of concrete is needed to build each Saltstone Disposal Unit, using approximately 700,000 total labor hours.

Once the project is complete, Saltstone Disposal Unit 10 will be the fifth mega-size unit built at SRS that will be able to hold up to 33 million gallons of saltstone, noted a news release.

Savannah River Mission Completion, the SRS liquid waste contractor, manages the construction and operation of the Saltstone Disposal Unit 10.

Constructing the disposal units is a priority for the cleanup program, and this milestone comes just weeks after Savannah River Mission Completion received authorization to operate Saltstone Disposal Unit 9.

The Department of Energy's Savannah River assistant manager for waste disposition Jim Folk said in a news release it has been affirming to witness the landscape change at SRS as the Saltstone Disposal Units were built.

“Since the first mega-unit, Saltstone Disposal Unit 6, was built in 2017, Environmental Management has not slowed down on construction of these critical structures,” Folk said. “These Saltstone Disposal Unit's ensure that the decontaminated salt solution will have a place to be safely and permanently disposed of. JACKSON — The Savannah River Ecology Lab’s Outreach Coordinator Sean Poppy presented a variety of animals — from salamanders and skinks, to frogs, snakes and a turkey vulture — to eager viewers at the Jackson library on Wednesday.

Kids and their families in the audience were able to pet a snake, learn about how owls hunt their prey, and see the inside of an alligator’s open jaw.

The Savannah River Ecology Lab is part of the University of Georgia, and provides an independent evaluation of the impact of Savannah River Site’s operations on the environment to the public and to the Department of Energy.

Poppy talked about the importance of these animal presentations.

"We like to go out and get the kids excited about reading, get them excited about the animals that are native to the area, and we hope that someone will get excited enough and want to  pursue careers in science ," he said.

Kids in the audience talked about which parts they enjoyed the most.

Presley Pitts said her favorite part was the alligator, and Bryar Thompson said that his was the snake. They both agreed that they'd come back to watch the presentation again.

Three young audience members, Emoree Dennis, Kenna Dennis and Elise Browning, talked about why they liked seeing and learning about the owls.

"I really love owls," Emoree said. "I care about owls because it's one of my favorite animals."

"It was cool to see how the owl had only one eye," Browning said about a small owl that was missing an eye after being hit by a car. Kenna added that owls interest her because "they fly very far away."

Poppy said that kids need to learn about ecology so they can "get in touch with the environment around them and why it's important for everything to stay healthy."

SREL will be hosting a Science Saturday event on Aug. 3 with the goal of raising environmental awareness in the community. The free, family event will be at the Riverview Park Activities Center in North Augusta from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Guests will get an up-close look at reptiles, amphibians, plants and more.

World leaders meet to discuss Ukraine peace roadmap

Dozens of world leaders have converged on a Swiss resort to discuss how to bring peace to war-ravaged Ukraine, though any hopes of a real breakthrough are muted by the absence of Russia. More than two years into the war, the combatants remain as far apart as they’ve ever been, with Kyiv sticking to its demands that Russia leave all Ukrainian territory it has seized and Moscow pressing on with its grinding offensive that has already taken large swaths of eastern and southern Ukraine. Despite Russia’s absence from the summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Saturday that he thinks the event could lay the groundwork for an eventual end to the war. NASCAR's Cup Series comes to Iowa, but it's not the same track the drivers remember

Christopher Bell likes that the NASCAR Cup Series is at Iowa Speedway for the first time. The .875-mile track isn’t  the one he remembers. Bell has seven top-five finishes in nine starts at the track in NASCAR’s other series, including two wins in the Xfinity Series. But the track has a different look this weekend after a partial repaving in the turns. The top-to-bottom racing that was a characteristic of the track in the past may not be there for Sunday’s 350-lap race. It's still a popular event and an estimated 40,000 fans are expected for Sunday’s race. Read more NASCAR's Cup Series comes to Iowa, but it's not the same track the drivers remember

Celtics take season's worth of lessons into Game 5 of NBA Finals with latest chance to secure title

The Celtics picked the most inopportune time to play their worst game of the season. Boston’s 122-84 Game 4 loss to Dallas had all of the superlatives, and none of them were good. It was the first time the Celtics have allowed the Mavericks to eclipse 100 points in the series and ended the Celtics’ 10-game playoff win streak. It also reminded them that winning a championship will require the same resilience they’ve shown during a postseason in which they haven’t lost consecutive games. History will be on their side in Game 5. It falls on the 16th anniversary of Boston clinching its last championship in 2008.
