Review: Savannah Riverboat Cruises

What’s the big picture here? The city sprung up around the Savannah River, which still plays a large part in daily commercial life. Savannah Riverboat Cruises' two classic riverboats—The River Queen and the Georgia Queen, with capacities of 600 and 1,000 respectively—glide along the water for 90 minutes, visiting points of interest and serving up some tasty Southern treats.

Tell us about your fellow tourees. My lunchtime tour was very busy, with hundreds of people, mostly tourists, packing the tables and decks. It didn’t feel too crowded though, with plenty of places to sit and watch the landscape roll by.

How is the guided part of the tour? The narration gives enough general history and pointers for sightseeing that it feels helpful but not intrusive. It really is worth tuning where you can hear it best on the top deck, but if you want a quieter cruise you can go down below.

Any other tips? If you keep a sharp eye on the water, you might spot some dolphins. The servers are bright and breezy as they take orders and deliver drinks, and the buffet is excellent, the fried chicken a definite highlight.

Sum this up for us. This is 90 minutes well spent. The river is such a huge part of Savannah’s history, and sailing part of it in an evocative, historic riverboat is the only way to see it.

International Paper faces state fines for wastewater released into Savannah River

International Paper Company faces nearly $28,000 in state fines for discharging wastewater with unacceptable levels of potential fecal material from its Port Wentworth mill into the Savannah River over a six-month period in 2023, according to an order made public by Georgia environmental officials Monday. 

The penalty also would apply to the unauthorized release in December of nearly 185,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater into a storm drain and ultimately into the river, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division noted in the document. 

Monday’s issuance of the consent order triggers a 30-day public comment period on the fine. 

Under the settlement, International Paper also is required to submit and then implement a plan to meet state effluent standards. 

Violations from May through October involved elevated amounts of enterococci bacteria, whose presence indicates possible contamination by human or animal waste, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency . 

However, the company says that does not appear to be the case at the Port Wentworth mill.

"Current data indicates the majority of the bacteria is non-human and from naturally occurring sources like wildlife and vegetation," International Paper spokeswoman Kristie Casler said in an email. "The mill is currently working with a third party to develop a river/harbor study for an alternative limit that would be protective of the environment. We are committed to being a good neighbor and operating our facilities in a safe and environmentally responsible manner through the submission of a monthly formal waste water report to the (Georgia) EPD."

The document notes that the Memphis, Tennessee-based maker of packaging, pulp and other fiber-based products discussed the likelihood that it would not meet fecal effluent standards in a meeting with EPD in February 2023. 

EPD’s order covers violations of the state’s Water Quality Act punishable by up to $50,000 per day in fines.

Savannah's largest air polluter

In terms of air quality, International Paper is the Savannah area’s largest producer of pollutants that cause climate change. 

In 2022, the company’s northwest Savannah mill released more than 367,000 metric tons of heat-trapping carbon dioxide, EPA data shows. That’s 84% more than the county’s second-leading carbon polluter, the U.S. Sugar Savannah Refinery, and the equivalent of what nearly 83,000 gas-powered vehicles would emit over the course of a year, according to the EPA.  

Carbon dioxide is the leading contributor to human-caused climate change.  

The Port Wentworth mill is fifth on the list of Chatham County greenhouse gas polluters. That facility emits more than 95,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide.  

Combined, the two Chatham plants – with machinery powered by burning natural gas and wood – release the equivalent of carbon emissions generated by burning a half-trillion pounds of coal. 

International Paper, which employs about 1,700 people locally, has set a goal of slashing companywide greenhouse gas emissions 35% by 2030, as well as significantly reducing waste and water use.

In the case of Savannah's River Street, "X" doesn't mark the spot for treasure, but it is the spot for a priceless experience.

Located in Rousakis Plaza, Echo Square doesn't look like much more than a small, bricked area surrounded by plants, ideal for sitting and watching the water. But don't judge a book by its cover. According to a previous Savannah Morning News story, it's unclear what is causing this phenomenon. It may be a combination of the sound bouncing between the buildings and the Savannah River and then focused by the planters. It's also not completely certain whether or not this was intended by the square's designers as the effect was not advertised or inscribed on any kind of plaque.

Whatever the reason, Echo Square holds the distinction of being a rather hidden gem, but also being a memorable stop for tourists like Nikki Montgomery from Wisconsin.

"We had a lot of fun there," she wrote via Messenger. "My kids thought it was the coolest spot in Savannah. They were so excited to tell every kid that walked by while we were there about it."

Patrick Mckinney had a similar experience with his kids.

"Each tried it out and couldn’t believe what was going on," he wrote via Messenger. "They thought maybe there are speakers in the bushes. It was weird."

The square is located at 305 East River St. between the river and Fannie's Your Aunt. There is a public parking lot next to the square, but it is pay-to-park.

Speaker:  Dr. Valerie Nwadeyi, Savannah River National Laboratory, Post-Doctoral Researcher, Savannah River National Laboratory

Bio-Brief:   Dr. Nwadeyi is currently a post-doctoral researcher at the Savannah River National Laboratory.  Her areas of expertise include radiation detection, imaging, and simulation, specializing in CdZnTe semiconductor detectors, list-mode data analysis, and advanced imaging algorithms and processing.  She has a MS and PhD in Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences from the University of Michigan, and a BS in Nuclear Engineering from South Carolina State University.

Title:   “ Non-destructive Assay Nuclear Measurements at the Savannah River National Laboratory “

Abstract:  Non-destructive assay (NDA) techniques are required to continue the efforts in monitoring and verifying safeguards for nuclear non-proliferation while ensuring the safe use of nuclear materials. This presentation will provide an overview of current technology used for NDA measurements, their key advantages, and challenges still faced in operation. In this discussion, both gamma-ray and neutron detection methods will be explained along with real world applications of NDA for nuclear material control and accountability (NMC&A) employed at SRNL.   Lastly, current SRNL NDA efforts used in radiation contamination mitigation for the Savannah River Tritium Enterprise and hold-up measurements for the National Nuclear Security Administration Surplus Plutonium Disposition (SPD) program will be discussed.
