So enjoying this place... it's not an extremely big marina but better than the ritzy ones people only read of when on vacations... The staff is really nice and accommodating... Harbormaster Paul is there and also Asst Harbormaster Jim are great to answer any questions. It's gated. They have a lovely sitting gazebo pool grill area and the washrooms and showers are lovely and very up to date...(see bath pics) ... They watch everything there and know who comes and goes.... This is a place boaters going thru the Jacksonville area should think of checking out ... I am extremely please with everything and everyone at this marina... yes I know I gave a lot of photos of the bath facilities but when you get excited about something that is worth it why not show it... more pics to follow of the marina...

Wonderful little marinated in Ortega to visit to check out boats or just dream of having one. The staff and boat owners here are pretty friendly with no attitude. If you just want to go dream building for a day, this is the perfect place to go do it. Gorgeous yachts, sail boats and a nice variety of other high-end water crafts. There's plenty of parking and a pool with impressive views of the river and houses that line it. Definitely a place to experience!

The Ortega River is the recreational boating center of Northeast Florida. Along Lake Shore Boulevard and Lakeside Drive are several marinas, boat repair shops, yacht sales and similar marine oriented businesses forming a unique waterfront environment in urban Jacksonville which is known as "Marina Mile."

Anchored in Jacksonville, Florida on the beautiful Ortega River, Ortega Landing is a community where boaters, members and residents enjoy the yachting lifestyle. With 38 river home units overlooking a 192-slip marina, boaters do not have to choose between a river home and a marina slip – they can have one, the other or both.
Welcome to the Ortega Yacht Club Marina located on the well protected Ortega River just off the St. Johns in Jacksonville, Florida. 5 miles south of downtown Jacksonville, year round boat owners appreciate the protection from strong Nor' Easters during the winter, and inland location during hurricane season. Many cruisers have tied up at our marina for the hurricane season due to the historically low incidence of Atlantic storms in the Georgia Bight area of Northeast Florida. Floating docks, easy access to fueling and just about everything you need blocks away are just a few of the amenities here at the Ortega Yacht Club Marina.
Sadler Point Marina is proud to be “Jacksonville’s Only Full Service & Do-it-Yourself Boatyard.” We are able to provide many services and support to our customers. We pride ourselves on being helpful and attentive to our customers needs as well as maintaining a high level of environmental stewardship. We are located about one mile southwest of the mouth of the Ortega River, very near the heart of downtown Jacksonville. Our customers enjoy one of the most exciting boating locals in the southeast. The St. Johns River provides innumerable activities from sailing, skiing, and other water-sports, to downtown waterside entertainment and restaurants such as The Jacksonville Landing, Metro Park and of course sports events including Jaguars and Suns games.
The first Ortega River Bridge, a wooden span on the site of the present "old" also carried the city trolley line across the river on its way to what is now Venetia and the Florida Country Club, just north of the present Timuquanna CC. "You could ride the trolley line anywhere in the city for a $4 weekly pass," Rogers said. "We used to take it to go to swim practice at the Florida Yacht Club [built in 1926]." The present old Ortega Bridge was opened in 1927, but the old span stayed there for several years to carry the trolley tracks across the river. The bridges were lift spans for one reason: The Gress Lumber Mill on the present sites of the Sadler point Marina and the Ortega River Yacht Club Marina . "That mill was built in 1912," Rogers said. "They milled cypress and magnolia logs, most of which were logged up Black Creek and loaded on barges to come up to the mill. The mill-hands all lived in houses on what is now Roosevelt Mall."
Prewar In 1928 Frank Pembroke Huckins sold his first yacht, a revolutionary Huckins Fairform Flyer, to David M. Goodrich for $15,000. Work on Hull #2 began immediately. In those days, the custom cruisers designed and built by FPH at his Jacksonville, Florida plant became the envy of the yachting world virtually overnight. Long before speed was all the rage on the water, Huckins yachts — ranging from 45-56 feet — were forging a reputation in performance. Fortunately, the stock market crash of 1929 had little initial effect on Huckins, which possessed a number of orders already in hand. David M. Goodrich, the original owner of Hull #1, Minim, now put Huckins to work on Maxim, a 54-footer powered with Sterling Dolphin Specials. The mid-30’s proved more challenging, but FPH never lost confidence in his dream and by the end of the decade sales were coming from across the country. PT Boat Era Prior to America’s entry into WWII, Huckins' participation in the PT Boat development program came after vessels constructed by various builders failed to satisfy Navy requirements. FPH, having learned that the twenty PT’s already in service were experiencing severe problems, secured a meeting with the Navy Bureau of Ships. His pitch: Building the "fastest seagoing boats in the world" in the 20's and 30's gave Huckins the experience necessary to design a PT boat capable of providing a fast platform for the Navy’s armament requirements. In December 1940, with scant assistance from the Navy, FPH began the project from the ground up. Delivered to the Navy in July of 1941, Huckins’ prototype was run through trials and accepted with enthusiasm as PT 69. In the end, FPH’s $100,000 gamble paid off, albeit with a net profit of $28.60. Postwar After the war, Huckins delighted a new generation of yachtsmen with a line of performance cruisers, many of which are still cherished for their speed and efficiency. Loyal customer David Goodrich launched his third Fairform Flyer, the first boat out of Huckins’ new yard on the Ortega River. While Frank Pembroke Huckins died in 1951, key players from this era would form the company’s management team for years to come: Ray Teller, hired by FPH to lead Huckins’ postwar design; George Pillsbury, destined to become vice president; Henry Baldwin, the company’s president and salesman; and Kenneth Archibald, stepson of FPH, who later became CEO and is still active in the company today. Present Day Today, under the leadership of Cindy and Buddy Purcell, Huckins Yacht Corporation continues to incorporate ever-advancing marine technologies without sacrificing 80 years of tradition. As always, the Huckins family prides itself on maintaining FPH’s insistence on patent-grabbing innovation, timeless style and custom craftsmanship that makes every yacht as unique as its owners. This philosophy has provided a heritage of success spanning eight decades, through countless financial upswings and downturns. Looking forward, we find ourselves in the enviable position of being able to recreate our past (Huckins’ library of original drawings includes every yacht we’ve ever built), along with the design skills necessary to introduce new models that more than live up to our remarkable history.
Women and trouble were Frank Huckins ' constant companions. And the latter usually followed the former. Huckins moved to Jacksonville to get away from personal problems but found professional problems here. His family had owned a lumber company in Boston and he became familiar with Jacksonville starting in 1908 through visits to a Panama Park sawmill owned by the prominent Cummer family. In the 1920s, Huckins sold the family business in Boston and moved to Jacksonville to escape the notoriety that followed two failed marriages, due mostly to his philandering. "If anyone had then told me I would become a resident of Jacksonville 20 years later, I would have thought them crazy," Huckins wrote in his memoir tellingly called Boats and Women. "Two divorces in Boston in seven years was too much. It was time to leave." A millwork business in which he had a stake went bust in 1927, and he considered yacht building because he had built boats years before as a youth. Huckins operated his boat building business on East Fourth Street, but moved to its current spot on the Ortega River in 1945. He called the boats Fairform Flyers, known for their special "quadroconic" hulls, designed to get the boat to plane, or rise out of the water, at speeds lower than normal, making for more efficient cruising. The first boat, a 42-footer, was sold to tire manufacturer David Goodrich for $15,000. When the Great Depression hit full force during the early 1930s, Huckins produced smaller boats at prices as low as $2,000 to keep the business going. In the 1940s, the company was one of three contracted with the Navy to design and build nearly 600 PT (patrol torpedo) boats made famous by President John F. Kennedy's experience during World War II. Huckins designed and built 18 PT boats, but none of them saw combat, according to the non-profit historical organization PT Boats Inc. But Purcell has letters from former servicemen who operated off Midway Island on Huckins PT boats during World War II. Most of the boats were built by the Electric Boat Co. of Bayonne, N.J., but the company used Huckins ' hull design, Purcell said. Kennedy made a local connection by delivering boats from a Navy training base in Melville, R.I., to Jacksonville and from Jacksonville to Miami. Huckins Yacht made only a $28 profit from the PT boats. Frank Huckins died in 1951, and his business partner, Henry Baldwin, continued as the company's chief executive officer.

Weekend Getaway

Boating on the upper st. johns river florida, ortega river - jacksonville, fla..

There are few places better to start a trip on Florida's St. Johns River than on the Ortega River located near Jacksonville. The choices for weekend jaunts abound. Start at either the Ortega Yacht Club Marina, (904-389-1199, oycm.com), known for its helpful and friendly atmosphere, or Lambs Yacht Center (904-384-5577, lambsyachtcenter.com), which has served the community for many years and where you can reprovision before heading out. Both marinas provide transient dockage and a number of other services. From here you are only a long walk or good bike ride from the riverside Avondale historic district (riversideavondale.org). Attend the saturday morning Farmers Market, shop in any number of interesting stores or dine at superb restaurants.

Day 1: Downtown Jacksonville, Fla.

It will take less than an hour by boat to get to the downtown Jacksonville area. Begin your cruise of the St. Johns River at Jacksonville Landing, another Rouse Company creation, for those of you familiar with the Inner Harbor in Baltimore. The free, very long floating dock can accommodate any number of vessels; however, there is no power or water available, and it is first come, first served. As an alternative for shore power, tie up across the river at River City Marina (904-398-7918, rivercitybrew.com), which offers fuel and 32-ounce beer growlers. Eat at one the waterfront restaurants, which include Chicago Pizza, American Grill, Fionn McCool's and Benny's Steak and Seafood, to name a few.If you're lucky, there will be live music at the pavilion located in the midst of the restaurants. During our last visit, we enjoyed an acoustic guitar performance of some Jimmy Buffett favorites. If you need to go ashore to stretch your legs, visit the highly regarded Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens. Other options include the Jacksonville Maritime Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art, right near Jacksonville Landing, or the Museum of Science and History just across the river.

Day 2: Sixmile Creek St. Augustine, Fla.

From the Landing, head an easy 30 miles upriver (south) to Sixmile Creek to the Outback Crab Shack (904-522-0500, outbackcrabshack.com). After passing under shands Bridge at Green Cove Springs, cruise to the eastern side of the river and into Palmo Cove, where the restaurant boasts a long floating dock. There is no power or water available, but dockage is free as long as you eat at the restaurant, and who doesn't mind eating out two nights in a row? The seafood boils are out of this world. Once you've feasted, enjoy a peaceful night's sleep in this beautiful, protected creek.

Day 3: Palatka, Fla.

Make another 30-mile run the next day to the floating downtown dock in Palatka. This little town has a lot of potential, and hopefully someone will take the beautiful old buildings near the waterfront park and return them to their former splendor. You can visit the Bronson Mulholland House (bronsonmulhollandhouse.com), a lovely riverfront home built by abolitionist and former circuit judge Isaac Bronson in the mid-1800s. Palatka may be best known for 146-acre Ravine Gardens State Park. This wonderful retreat features a 1.8-mile driving loop, or hike the trails to spot any number of species of birds and butterflies. Ravine gardens is famous for its stunning azaleas. Pets are welcome in the park on a leash.

Once you've hiked to the gardens and back, try Angel's, the oldest diner in Florida, just a few blocks from the Palatka City Docks. You can also anchor out and dinghy ashore or tie up downriver at Boathouse Marina (386-328-2944, boathousemarina.com), which has 40 slips, restrooms and laundry facilities and WiFi. In operation since the 1930s, Angel's is renowned for its burgers, fries and onion rings and is open 24/7. Not in the mood for burgers? The floating dock at local hotspot Corky Bell's Seafood is just a short run upriver in east Palatka. Dockage is complimentary with your meal. And don't miss the Magnolia Cafe before departing Palatka. The menu showcases locally sourced foods and wonderful organic, fair-trade sweetwater coffee. Delicious. It serves breakfast and lunch seven days a week and dinner Thursday through saturday. Daily specials are announced on its Facebook page.It doesn't get better than this cruising in protected waters, visiting quaint, small towns and eating in great restaurants. The only thing better might be the beautiful lower St. Johns River. But we'll save that for another trip.

Call Box: 1927 Ortega River Bridge remains one of the area's busiest drawbridges

This is one of four tiny distinctive houses on the Ortega River Bridge. (Sandy Strickland/Florida Times-Union)

Dear Call Box: I know that the Florida Department of Transportation has been working on a project to rehabilitate the Roosevelt Boulevard bridge to Ortega. That’s made me curious about the other bridge that leads to the Ortega peninsula.

B.T., Southside

Dear B.T.: The Ortega River Bridge has what many consider the finest panoramic view of downtown Jacksonville.

View aside, it is notable as one of the busiest drawbridges in Northeast Florida due to its marine traffic. A couple of decades ago it opened roughly 15,000 times a year to allow pleasure boats from several marinas down the Ortega to get to the St. Johns River, according to Times-Union archives.

But there are fewer pleasure boats plying the river now, say long-time residents.

Yet it’s raised 7,000 times a year, still considered a high number, said Bianca Speights, public information officer for the Florida Department of Transportation.

The bridge is used by joggers, strollers, bikers, dogs walking their owners and photographers wanting to capture the view of sailboats skimming across the river, the sun shimmering on the water and the starry-night glow of lights from the city skyline.

The bridge has even hosted a proposal or two.

The present two-lane bascule bridge dates to 1927. But first there was a wooden bridge that the Ortega Co. constructed in 1908 to carry a streetcar line connecting the new Ortega development with the rest of Jacksonville. As an incentive, developers promised no taxes until 1912 and free water until 1911, according to past stories.

“You could ride the trolley line anywhere in the city for a $4 weekly pass,” the late Grace Rogers, then owner of Pier 17 Marina, said in a 1999 Times-Union story. “We used to take it to go to swim practice at the Florida Yacht Club.”

The present bridge was built in 1927, but the old span stayed for several years to carry the trolley tracks across the river.

The bridges were lift spans because of the Gress Lumber Mill on the sites of the Sadler Point Marina and the Ortega River Yacht Club Marina, Rogers said in the story.

“That mill was built in 1912,” she said. “They milled cypress and magnolia logs, most of which were logged up Black Creek and loaded on barges to come up to the mill. The mill-hands all lived in houses on what is now Roosevelt Mall.”

The Gress mill closed after it burned down in 1955.

Rogers recalled that there was no way across the river between the Ortega River Bridge and Blanding Boulevard.

“There was a road [Lake Shore and Lakeside], but it was a shell road, and they used to bring out a bulldozer every so often and grade it. It kicked up a terrible mess of dust,” she said in the story.

That problem was solved in 1938 when Roosevelt and the second bridge over the Ortega River were built.

Still, residents valued their picturesque Ortega River Bridge.

The venerable span has been rehabilitated several times. In 1996 it got a new center draw span and operating mechanisms. Its four small distinctive houses also were restored to the way they looked when it opened. One is the bridge tender’s house, one is a restroom, one houses a generator and the fourth, the modern control systems.

For the months that it was closed to road traffic, Ortega-area residents used the heavily traveled Roosevelt. In 2012 it underwent more repairs.

Putting up with the draw span is a way of life in Ortega. Many cope by getting our of their cars and watching the sailboats pass and some by socializing with other motorists.

“I think it’s just perfect in keeping with our neighborhood,” said Carter Bryan, a long-time Ortega resident. “We’ve got a lot of classic old homes. It’s a beautiful bridge. And it’s distinctive. It doesn’t have a high gradient to get over it so it’s pretty much level.”

In its closed position, Bryan said, it’s 8.5 to 9 feet above the water, depending on the tide.
