Much of New York City’s beauty can be found in its skyline, parks, and diverse cultural communities. But some of the most gorgeous parts of the city stem from the fact that it’s surrounded by water. To enjoy the true beauty of NYC, take an awesome ferry ride, offering photo-ops of the Statue of Liberty, Manhattan Bridge, and more. These five ferries in NYC are sure to be a blast.

Staten Island Ferry

The Staten Island Ferry is totally free. This ferry runs 24 hours a day and transports people from the suburbs to Manhattan in 25 minutes. While still a commuter necessity, more and more sightseers are taking it to get off the streets and see the stunning panoramas of lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty.

Tips & What to Expect!

  • This ferry is the world’s busiest passenger only route! We suggest avoiding the rush hours in the morning and evening to avoid the crowds
  • You can board the Staten Island Ferry at the Whitehall Ferry Terminal near Battery Park ! If you’re hungry this terminal has a few places for a quick snack.
  • Once on board, go to one of the outer decks to check out the spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline during your ride
  • If traveling towards Staten Island , look out the right side of the boat for a view of the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island

Once you reach Staten Island , you’ll have to exit the boat and re-board at the St. George Terminal to head back to Manhattan.

This NYC ferry is an easy and practical way to get around and explore New York City. Some highlights include

Highlights of this Ferry

  • North Williamsburg- if you love art, this stop is for you! Take the Williamsburg Street Art tour or take the bus to the Bushwick Street Art tour
  • Hunters Point South- a great area for beer lovers! You can explore all the micro-breweries in this area
  • The Empire State Building
  • Grand Central
  • Times Square

Water Taxi Ikea Ferry

This ferry service runs from the Wall Street Terminal to Red Hook, Brooklyn. Tickets are free on weekends and $5 on weekdays. If you make a minimum purchase of $10 at IKEA, your weekday ride is free. It’s a great way to get to Red Hook Brooklyn and back to the city without taking the subway.

This ferry ride takes 20 to 30 minutes and gives you great views of the city on the way there! This ferry service drops you off right at the IKEA store so you can do some shopping or explore Red Hook.

New York Harbor Hop On Hop Off Cruise

These cruise boats are hard to miss at the pier, as they look just like New York taxis: bright and yellow. At $37 a ticket, this cruise leaves New York Harbor daily, offering ferry riders views of the Chrysler and Empire State Buildings, the Brooklyn Bridge , Governor’s Island , Battery Park,  and the Statue of Liberty. The entire loop can be done in 70 minutes, or you can hop on and off to explore the city and its great eats and attractions.

NYC for Free: Free Boat Ride, Museums, and Walking Tours

Whether you are solo visiting New York City on a budget, are looking for free things for families to do, are enjoying a visit with friends or are on a couple's getawau, there are some excellent opportunities to enjoy some of the best of New York City without spending a dime.

You'll want to see NYC from the water, taken in a few museums, and go on a walking tour to learn more about New York City's iconic neighborhoods.

Free NYC Boat Rides

The Staten Island Ferry is rumored to be "the cheapest date around." A cruise on the Staten Island Ferry will cost you nothing as you enjoy the hour-long round-trip from Battery Park (South Ferry Subway station) to the borough of Staten Island. During the trip you can experience some of the same fabulous views that the pricier trips offer, including the skyscrapers and bridges of lower Manhattan, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty .

Check out the weekday or weekend schedules for the ferry and plan your free cruise. A couple of things to note: 1) you will have to get off the boat in Staten Island and get back on, even if you just want to ride back and forth and 2) the sightseeing cruises get much closer to the Statue of Liberty (& include time for a photo-op with the Statue of Liberty behind you) but since this is a commuter ferry, the Staten Island Ferry doesn't get as close or stop for photos.

Free NYC Museums

National Museum of the American Indian : The sixteenth museum in the Smithsonian Institution, the national museum works in collaboration with Native peoples of the Western Hemisphere to preserve, study, and exhibit the lives, history, and art of Native Americans. The museum is housed in the historic Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House and museum admission is free daily. The museum is located in lower Manhattan on Bowling Green, just a short walk from the Staten Island Ferry .

Goethe House: Learn about German life and culture at the library and gallery of the Goethe Institut. Exhibits, lectures, and performances are changed regularly. The museum is located on Spring Street and is open Monday through Friday. Admission to the exhibits and lectures is free. The library is closed Mondays and costs $10 ($5 for students) for year-long access.

New York Public Library: Entrance to exhibits at the four major Manhattan branches as well as borough branches is free. The various branches of the library are located throughout the city— check out the current exhibit schedule and descriptions to find out what most interests you. Exhibits are as diverse as the libraries themselves—from science, industry, and business to performing arts and the humanities.

Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum: The only U.S. museum dedicated to contemporary and historic design is open free to the public on Saturdays from 6-9 p.m. Located on museum mile at 91st Street and 5th Avenue, the museum is open daily except for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. In addition to the permanent collection , there are changing exhibitions .

See the list of Free and Pay-What-You-Wish Days at NYC Museums for more ways to enjoy the museums of NYC on the cheap.

Free NYC Walking Tours

One fun and free walking tour is available every Friday at 12:30 p.m. Meet the guide at the Sculpture Court at 120 Park Avenue (southwest corner of East 42nd Street). You'll be treated to a wonderful tour of Grand Central Station and the surrounding neighborhood. The 90-minute tour also includes many neighborhood highlights, including Pershing Square and the  Chrysler Building .

Walking offers you the opportunity to see and experience a  neighborhood  up-close and learn about the people and places that make it unique. These free walking tours cover a variety of neighborhoods, as well as two of  New York City's great parks —Central Park and the High Line. Free tours tend to attract large groups, so you're not going to get the same intimate experience you might experience some of New York City's best walking tours, but you can't beat the price.

  • I live in New York City and often take visitors on the Staten Island Ferry.
  • The ferry runs 24/7 and is totally free for a 25-minute ride from Lower Manhattan to the island.
  • I recommend the ferry to all New York City tourists on a budget for the stunning skyline views.

Insider Today

When you live in New York City , everyone wants to visit you.

I should know. I moved to the city four years ago and have had countless visits from friends and family members who both miss me and want to explore the iconic metropolis I call home.

To show my guests a good time on a budget, I often take them to the Staten Island Ferry — a free boat ride from Lower Manhattan to Staten Island with stunning views of New York from the water. I highly recommend it to any city dwellers with loved ones coming to town.

In 2019, I moved to New York City. Since then, I've had several friends and family members visit me, so I'm always looking for fun, low-budget activities to show them around.

A ride across passages of history - Moscow Metro rolls on

free yacht ride

Click on the map to enlarge it

Lying at a depth of 5 (Pechatniki station) to 80 metres (Park Pobedy station), the history of the last eight decades unfold before your eyes, carved out of marble and granite and built in iron and glass – revealing the tastes, ideas, dreams, hopes and disappointments of the previous generations and contemporaries. The Moscow Metro dates back to 1931, when its construction first began, although engineers Pyotr Balinsky and Evgeny Knorre submitted their first designs to the Moscow City Duma as far back as 1902. “His speeches carried a strong temptation: like a true demon, he would promise to cast Moscow down to the bottom of the sea and raise it above the clouds”, a journalist for the Russkoye Slovo newspaper commented on Balinsky’s idea. Yet the Duma, made up of rich people, did not bite the bait: after all, they all lived in the centre of the city and never rode overcrowded trams.

After five failed proposals before the Duma, the Moscow Metro finally threw open its doors on May 15, 1935, 18 years after the revolution, and carried the first passengers on its moving staircases, escalators, and the padded seats of its new wagons (unlike the wooden seats in trams). The first metro line – from Sokolniki to Dvorets Sovetov (now known as Kropotkinskaya) -- was 11 km long and had 13 stations. Now, the Moscow Metro has a track of over 300 km with 12 lines and 182 stations. The city’s development outline for 2020 envisages that, by then, another 120 km will have been added to the existing routes.

For the first 20 years of its history, the Moscow Metro was named after Lazar Kaganovich, the “iron commissar” and Stalin’s right hand man, who was in-charge of construction of the first stage of the metro (incidentally, he personally blew up the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in December 1931 as a part of the Proletarian Capital project). In 1955, however, the Metro was renamed after Vladimir Lenin. Although Russia has long since changed its political track, you can still find the images of the former leader at over 10 stations, including, for instance, busts of Lenin at Belorusskaya and Komsomolskaya stations, impressive mosaics at Baumanskaya and Kievskaya stations, a tile panel in the passage between the Borovitskaya and Biblioteka Imeni Lenina stations. By a bitter irony of fate, Lenin’s full-face and side-face images decorate the Tsaritsyno (translated as the Tsarina’s Estate) station (dubbed Lenino up until 1990) – images of the very person who ordered the shooting of the royal family. You will not, however, find any images of Stalin in Moscow’s underground. A symbol of Russia's victory, he was omnipresent in the late 1940s. After his death in 1953 and the denunciation of Stalin’s personality cult, his images were gradually withdrawn from the Moscow Metro.

“Architecture developed along the same lines, both above and below the surface. Anything that emerged above ground had a reflection underground. It is equally true that vice versa never occurred: good architecture underground but bad architecture above the ground,” says Nikolay Shumakov, chief architect of the Moscow Metro. The first metro stations, up until the mid-1950s, were conceived and built as luxurious “palaces for the people”, great architecture for a great state. Art historians insist that the richly-decorated underground was a deliberate ideological move to eulogise the young Soviet country. Stations built between 1937 and 1955 are characteristic of the first architectural period. Everything completed at this time is worthy of special attention. For instance, look at the ceiling at Mayakovskaya and Novokuznetskaya stations to see mosaic panels based on designs by artist Alexander Deineka – 24-Hour Soviet Sky and Heroic Labour of the Soviet People on the Home Front. The mosaics were assembled by famous mosaic artist Vladimir Frolov, author of the mosaic icons in St. Petersburg’s Church of the Saviour on Blood. The Ploshchad Revolutsii station was decorated with 76 bronze sculptures of workers, soldiers, farmers, students and other Soviet people. You can even find a frontier guard with a dog and rub its nose for good luck. You may also note that all the figures (except pioneers) are either sitting or bent, which engendered the sad joke – “Any Soviet man is either in jail or on his knees.”

Elements of decoration in Moscow's metro.   Photos by Alexandr Ganyushin

1955 heralded the end of the good times for Russian architecture – both underground and above ground – after the Communist Party issued a decree "On elimination of extravagance in design and construction.” Dull stations, without any stucco work, mosaics, original columns or other “unjustified” elements, were built under the slogan “Kilometres at the expense of architecture”. Things were the same above the ground, where entire cities were built of commonplace five-storey apartment blocks, all looking the same, nicknamed ‘Khrushchevkas’ after the then leader, Nikita Khrushchev. To get a sense of this period’s architecture, see the few stations built in the 1960s-1980s like Tverskaya, Kitay-Gorod and Kolomenskaya. In 2002, with the reconstruction of the Vorobyovy Gory station, the development of the Moscow Metro entered a third stage, which could be defined as ‘renaissance’. The platform of the station offers a splendid view of the Moskva River, the Luzhniki Olympic Complex and the Academy of Sciences building. Architectural canons of the 1930s-1940s were once again in use in the design of underground stations. By the same token, artists once again become involved in decorating the stations. As such, the Sretensky Bulvar station boasts silhouettes of Pushkin, Gogol, and Timiryazev and Moscow sights; the Dostoevskaya station is decorated with black-and-white panels featuring the main characters from Dostoyevsky’s novels The Idiot, Demons, Crime and Punishment, The Brothers Karamazov, and the Maryina Roshcha station flaunts its pastoral mosaic landscapes. In 2004, Russia's first monorail transport system was launched into service – an elevated track (running 6 to 12 metres above the ground) in the northern part of Moscow, linking the All-Russian Exhibition Centre and the Timiryazevskaya metro station. The evolution of the Moscow Metro goes on. It’s still a work in progress, with ambitious plans to move the Moscow Metro even closer to passengers over the next ten years, not just by adding an extra 120 km to its total track. “We want to strip the stations of everything we can,” says Nikolai Shumakov. “We are trying to show the passengers their very framework, what the metro is made of. Cast iron and concrete are beautiful.”

How Long is the Staten Island Ferry Round Trip?

You should plan for at least 60 - 90 minutes for your journey once you arrive at Whitehall Ferry Terminal in Lower Manhattan.

The ferry rides each way are approximately 25-30 minutes .

How long is the ride on the Staten Island Ferry

You must get off at the Staten Island side and you can join the queue to take the same ferry back to Manhattan, so it is possible to spend an hour on the ride back and forth.

However, depending on the size of the crowd that is waiting to go to Manhattan, you may need to take the next ferry for the return trip to Manhattan.

IMPORTANT NOTE : The ferry does not stop at the Statue of Liberty. We have a detailed post on how to get to the Statue of Liberty .

Is the Staten Island Ferry Free?

The Staten Island Ferry is free! That means the price is zero. There is no ticket needed to ride the ferry in either direction.

Beware of scammers trying to sell you a ticket for the Staten Island Ferry. YOu may see some standing in front of the ferry terminal. Don't engage with them -- just keep walking.

What is the Ferry Schedule?

The Staten Island ferry runs 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. You can ride it day and night. Night rides are quite beautiful.

The ferry schedule is easy to understand. The ferries run every 30 minutes, on the hour and on the half-hour (so, 12:00, 12:30, 1:00, 1:30).

There is one exception. During weekday rush hours, the ferries run every 15 minutes.

Rush hours are 6:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

See the full schedule here .

TIP: If you take a night ride, you might consider combining it with our 9/11 Memorial and Brooklyn Bridge Tour  offered at 8 p.m. on several days each week from March through October.

When is the Best Time to Take the Staten Island Ferry?

Assuming you are starting your voyage from Manhattan, the best time to take a ride is to avoid rush hours, particularly the afternoon rush hour.

According to the ferry's Facebook page, the most popular weekday off-peak times are from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., with Wednesdays being the busiest day.

If you want a less crowded ferry, we suggest that you take the ferry any weekday between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. or anytime after 7 p.m.

If you think 7 p.m. is too late, remember that in summer the sun sets much later.

And evening rides on the ferry are beautiful.

In fact, riding the Staten Island Ferry at this time is one of our top 10 things to do at night in NYC .

Keep in mind that these ferries are huge. They can carry over 6000 passengers.

You shouldn't have any issues taking photos of the Statue of Liberty or other sights along the way.

Bottom line: Take the ferry when it works best for your schedule. If you have flexibility, use our recommendations above. No matter what time, the ride will be amazing.

VIEWS FROM THE STATEN ISLAND FERRY

The ferry's route offers stunning views of Lower Manhattan , the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island , and Governors Island . +

You can also see the hilly terrain of Brooklyn, and in particular, Brooklyn Heights .

You will have a slightly distant view of both the Brooklyn Bridge and the Verazzano-Narrows Bridge.

Be sure to take our free guided audio tour to accompany you on your ride on the Staten Island Ferry.

And check out our post on the 28 best spots for views of New York City .

WHERE TO STAND TO GET THE BEST VIEWS

Since the ferries ride back and forth the same route every day, you will have a view of the  Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island  on both legs of the round-trip.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Myn Baron (@mer_myn)

Most people want to see Lady Liberty right away, so when you board in Manhattan, head to the right side (starboard side) of the ferry and make your way upstairs to the outdoor deck.

Stake a spot along the railing and as far to the back of the vessel as you can.

This ensures that you will have the best view possible to see the Statue of Liberty on your ride to Staten Island.

Not all ferries are identical, but the image below is of a typical vessel.

Where to Stand on Staten Island Ferry

On your return trip, you might like to see the other view, so again, when you board to return to Manhattan, go to the right side (starboard side) upstairs deck of the ferry.

Although, it should be a bit less crowded on the Statue of Liberty side on the return trip.

For the best Lower Manhattan views and photo-ops, stand in the back of the ferry when departing Manhattan and the front of the ferry when departing Staten Island.

Best views of Statue of Liberty from Staten Island Ferry

One more point, you can still get good views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and other points of interest in New York Harbor from the lower decks.

These decks don't have outside seating, but there are windows and you can get good photos.

THINGS TO DO IN LOWER MANHATTAN BEFORE OR AFTER YOUR FERRY RIDE

Quick Facts About Staten Island

Staten Island is the least populous of the five boroughs, but the third-largest in terms of land size.

Staten Island claimed to have the world’s largest landfill, called the Fresh Kills Landfill.

It closed in 2001, reopened briefly to receive the debris cleared from the World Trade Center site, and is now being converted into NYC’s second-largest park.

Staten Island is the only borough not connected to the New York City Subway system.

Cornelius Vanderbilt, the railroad tycoon and financier of Grand Central Station, was born in Port Richmond, Staten Island, on May 27, 1794, of Dutch/English background.

At 16, Vanderbilt started his ferry service and he was the conductor of the ferries -- until he became one of the richest Americans in the 1800s.

Some of the first humans passed through Staten Island about 15,000 years ago.  The first permanent settlers were a Lenape tribe, about 5,000 years ago.

The first recorded European contact with the island was by Giovanni Verrazano in 1520.  He was sailing on the French ship La Dauphine and they anchored for one night.

The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, which spans the waterway between Brooklyn and Staten Island, is named for him.

The next European on the island was Henry Hudson, sailing for the Dutch.  The island was named Staaten Eylandt (translation: States Island) in honor of the Dutch Parliament.

Staten Island was occupied by British troops throughout the American Revolution.

Staten Island became a part of New York City in 1898 when the five boroughs consolidated.

However, it was called the Borough of Richmond at the time (Staten Island is in Richmond County).  It did not begin to be commonly called Staten Island until 1975.

Staten Island is the only borough without an NYC Department of Corrections major detention center.

Sailor’s Snug Harbor opened in 1833, as the country’s first home for retired seamen.  Today it is a public park.

There was a movement in the 1980s in Staten Island that favored secession from New York City. It failed.

TIPS FROM LOCALS AND TRAVELERS

While we hope this post provides you with enough information about the ferry, here are some tips from members of our New York Travel Tips Facebook group.

One of the most common questions visitors to New York City taking the ferry for the first time have is “What is the best time to take it?” Kira, a local commuter, corroborates our advice. Avoid rush hours!

free yacht ride

Dawn, a former commuter has some interesting insight -- it isn't just the rush hour that can cause crowds. In peak tourist season on weekends, lots of tourists take the ferry.

Use Dawn’s tip to steer clear of any crowd if there is one. Make your way to the downstairs of the ferry and head to the back, especially for the ride out. You’ll get amazing views of Lower Manhattan.

free yacht ride

Camille agrees with Dawn about going to the bottom back of the ferry and reassures that weekends aren't that bad.

Another frequent question is if you have to get off the ferry in Staten Island or if you can stay on for the trip back to Manhattan.

In addition to answering the question, Betty recommends where to sit on the ferry for the best views.

David mentions that you might be able to hop on the next ferry back, depending on timing and Millie did just that!

If you are torn between going to the Statue of Liberty or taking the Staten Island Ferry, group members suggest you consider what kind of experience you want.

The free ferry is a quick trip that will get you some nice pictures of Lady Liberty and great views of Lower Manhattan.

If you want a richer experience, visit the Statue of Liberty.

Many people ask if the ride is choppy and if they should be worried about seasickness. No one said they had a problem, even those who do typically get seasick on a vessel.

If you have time to spare and feel like exploring Staten Island, these group members chime in with what you can do there. For information on these sights, see our self-guided tour above .

The Next Generation of the Logistics Workforce

Topic: On January 1, 2011, the oldest Baby Boomers started turning 65. Every day, about 10,000 boomers cross that threshold. By 2030, when all Baby Boomers will have turned 65, fully 18% of the nation’s population will be at least that age, according to Pew Research Center population projections.
