The International Hobie 18

The Hobie 18 was introduced in 1977 as the performance cat that would take the Hobie family of boats to the next level. Designed with symmetrical hulls and daggerboards. The boat also incorporated equipment not available on earlier Hobie designs. Two prime examples are the Roller Furling Jib and an integrated traveler track on the rear crossbar. Another significant departure from previous Hobie designs was the loose footed Mainsail. Integral hiking / trapeezing wings Spring-loaded pivoting daggerboards controlled with a single line Mylar / Dacron taffeta sails First Hobie to be designed with a Comptip New rudder castings that would be retrofitted to the 18 and be standard on all future models.

The boat was an immediate success, and competitive fleets sprouted up in North America, Australia and to a lesser extent in Europe, where the boat was built with an all-aluminum mast, tapered above the hounds. The 17 became an ISAF International Class in 1990.

Boat Weight

The advertised weight of the newly introduced Hobie 18 was 400#. But the early boats were far heavier than that. Hobie was selling boats as fast as they could build them, and not much attention was paid to the amount of fiberglass and resin that was used. During the early to mid 80’s hull weights started dropping but premature failure at stress points became problematic. This failure was addressed by adding shroud anchors that spread the load at the shrouds and the same part is used to strengthen the boat at the anchor points for the front crossbar. Boats built from 1986 to present generally will weigh in very close to the factory specification.

Versatility

The Hobie 18 is probably the most versatile catamaran ever built. There are still active and competitive fleets in many areas of the country. It is equally enjoyable both as a racer and as a daysailor. With the jib furled, it can be easily single handed like the Hobie 14, or wings can be added and it becomes a very manageable family daysailor/cruiser. It can easily be sailed off the beach, and yet is much less “active” than its smaller cousins, stable and forgiving without being as technical and “spirited” as the Hobie 20 
For those looking for a bit more of a thrill, you can pick up a SX rig and/or a spinnaker kit can be added to any incarnation of the Hobie 18.

Crew Weight¨

The minimum crew weight according to class rule was changed in the late 1990’s from 285# up to 295# where it remains at this writing. The boat is most competitive when sailed with combined crew weight between 295# and 320#. It still competes very well with combined crew weights up to around 360#. Due to the tall bows and high volume hulls it can be a lot of fun with 3 or 4 adults and still day sails very well with 500# of crew weight, or sometime more.

Sailing Characteristics

The Hobie 18 is once again incredibly versatile. The boat handles well over a wide range of conditions. It will point a bit higher than its asymmetrical cousin, although it is a bit wetter in heavy winds because the trampoline closer to the water. It is built like a tank, and will stand up well to as much wind as you are comfortable sailing. In extremely light conditions it will not live up to its Portsmouth rating, but when sailed by a competent crew will still keep up with both the Hobie 16 and the Hobie 20. The tall bows make it very difficult to “pitch pole” and it is a much smoother ride than the smaller Hobies. The Hobie 18 can be sailed well with relatively inexperienced crew, because while there are many more adjustments than on the Hobie 16, they are not nearly as critical to the overall performance of the boat as they are on the Hobie 20 or the Hobie Tiger/Wildcat.

Production Changes

While the original Hobie 18 SE has seen no significant changes during its lifetime, Hobie added wings and introduced the Magnum 18 in 1984. Sometime around 1990, Hobie added longer wings, a taller mast and vertical cut Mylar sails in and introduced the Hobie 18SX. Very shortly after the SX hit the showroom, the Hobie Miracle 20 made its debut and the performance oriented sailors embraced it and never looked back at the Hobie 18 SX. There are very few SX’s still available, and the only nationally active Hobie 18 racing class is the original incarnation, the Hobie 18 SE.

In 2004 Hobie ended production of the Hobie 18 in any configuration. In 2011 Hobie Cat Australia made a limited run of 10 sets of hulls for loyal owners that wanted many more years of sailing from their Hobie 18 platform. 9 of those sets were shipped to the USA.

Modifications for Racing

The factory 3:1 downhaul can be upgraded to as much as 8:1, and can be brought out to each side of the boat so it can be adjusted from either side of the boat. A positive Mast Rotation system can be used to keep the mast rotated in light air conditions when sailing off the wind.

What to look out for in a Used boat

The Hobie 18 is a very well constructed boat however two common problem areas are soft spots in the Deck just in front of the rear cross bar where the skipper sits. Also be sure to inspect for cracking where the front crossbar attaches to the hull. If you are getting an excessive amount of water in the hulls, the most common point of entry is the dagger board trunk.. Check the seal both at the top and the bottom. The area at the top is very often where you will find the problem. As with all Hobies, be sure and drain water out of the hulls after use, and leave the port off to allow humidity to escape. Used boats are generally priced in the $1000 to $3500 range depending on age, condition, and whether or not it has wings.

Great condition 2 very small soft spots. Recently started the process of fiberglassing inside the hull where the delamination has occured. Comes with Main and Jib sail, along with all blocks tackle and rigging.Trampoline is in poor shape, easy to replace though. Have owned it and sailed the boat a little over a year. Currently she is sitting awaiting to have the mast stood up to go sailing again. But I also have a N.A.C.R.A. 5.2 which I plan on getting set up for single handing with a spin. 18' hobie magnum catamaran for sale. It come with wings (magnum) and is also rigged for trapeze wires, 2 each sides. the wings are really nice bit if its really blowing and you want to push her you can fly a hull while on the wire. It is also rigged with a righting system/rope that pulls up under the shear when not in use. This is so much more boat than a 16 but not in an intimidating way. I sailed her solo often thanks to the wings. Unlike a 16 she is also still fast and fun with 3 people on board. The hull is equipped with dagger boards each side. The year is 1983Trailer is galvanized and is included. Main sail is sun burst and the jib is all white. I can step the mast and rig her by myself but 2 makes it much easier. The HOBIE Tandum Island has a proven track record, It is incredibly fast and I have done over 16 MPH with it and It will sail in a very light wind but becomes a rocket when the wind is up (very exciting), It has a large responsive rudder and a drop down center board that can be raised for shallow water, This kayak has twin mirage drive flippers and is faster peddled than you can paddle, So if the wind dies, you can still travel at a good rate of speed, It can also be paddled. I have sailed this in very rough waters and the out riggers keep it stable, You can stand up in it with no danger of tipping over, With a conventional Kayak if you see the mountains twenty miles away...you will think twice about paddling that far, With a Hobie Tandum...its a quick trip when the wind is up, You can tack into the wind unlike many kayaks that have just a simple sail that you can only go in the direction of the wind, This is a true sail boat and is faster than most larger sail boats. The Hobie is great to fish out of or use as a swim platform, This is a 2012 boat and has not had much use, I bought one in New Zealand and that is where I will do my sailing.,I sail on the ocean and absolutely love this boat. I have used it camping and can haul all the gear with no problem, a safe load is 600 pounds, There are three large storage compartments to put your gear and food, I have also strapped a cooler behind the rear seat. This is a Hobie Cat sport catamaran of the old generation with hull shapes similar to the Hobie 17, it has a jib which makes it a rather powerful double trapeze. Like the HC 17, it can be equipped with abseiling wings.

These older generation boats are still robust and suitable for sporty cruising, for very affordable prices! It is a very good catamaran for raids for example. There is a Hobie 18 Formula version, more canvas and more sporty than the Hobie 18.

What would you pick between a Prindle and a Hobie cat for a play Catamaran?

I live on a decent sized lake in the middle of washington state and i've always wanted to get a catamaran to buzz around in but I could never find a good deal. I've mostly been looking into Hobie cats, but I just found a 18' prindle in good shape for dirt cheap with trailer and I'm seriously debating on going down to get it, but i'm not that well versed in the prindle brand. If anyone has any preferences or input i'd appreciate it.  

I sailed Prindle cats for a dozen years. That's my preference. I now paddle/peddle Hobie inflatables. Wish I had a place to store a Prindle cat. Hobies are fine, I guess, if they have fixed their tendency to pitchpole. I think they have. Don't get an old one though. Have fun!  

I sail a Prindle 16, very similar to a Prindle 18. Fantastic boats. Some of the older Hobies had their tramps fitted on pylons over fairly low volume hulls. The limited volume of Hobie hulls can result in them going under, rather than through waves which can result in pitch pole. Early Prindles had their tramps mounted directly on higher volume hulls which provided more bouyancy and reduced the risk of pitch pole. Basically, Prindles are more forgiving then older Hobies IMO, and they are quick. I believe the 18 you are loking has assymetirc hulls and no dagger board, this will hurt upwind performance some vrs a dagger board cat, but their are fewer failure modes and the assymetric boats can be beached and sailed in shallow water with more confidence. Prindle 18 shouldbe a great play boat due to the above attributes. 2 of 11 finishers in the multi hull class of the recent EC were old Prindles, including my 16 and a very fast 19. IME the Prindle will be a little more durable. Sailed both for years and years. I miss the Prindle.  

I think the Prindle 18 would be a real gas to mess about on. It's a lot more boat than a Hobie 16 and more of a racer. I believe you can even get chutes and various size headsails, which I haven't seen for Hobies. Not to say a Hobie 16 is a dog. I used to surf mine on the ocean swells in the Molokai channel in Hawaii and it was a blast.  

Well you guys convinced me. I'll going to go out tomorrow to take a look at it.  

Maybe check out this vid of me buying my Prindle 16. We were pretty thorough. Might give some ideas to think about. We did heavily modify the boat after purchase, but she was in good shape.  

Our Spirit 17 is a crazy Frankenstein of a Hobie and Prindle. It's got the more full Prindle hull shapes, but with the tramp pylons of the Hobie. Maybe the best of both worlds? I've not yet pitch-poled her. Maybe this summer?

Prindles are a step up IMHO My daughter has a picture of me sailing the Hobie pulling her on water skis. They are super fun and super quick  

I'm having a hard time finding information on this so I hoped some of the Prindle fans could answer this question for me; Do Prindles have any sort of seat (wing) option? This one says it has the trapeze, but my dad is 75 and really wants to sail it as well and the wings would make that a little easier.  

The 18 was the Best prindle they made. the 2 feet over the 16 made it faster and less likely to pitch pole, can carry a larger crew weight but still simple with no dagger boards. Only weights 30 lbs more then a 16. I raced both the 16 and 18 for many years. Crewed on the 18 for nationals and place third, first two boats where both olympic sailors. still have the 16 we bought in 1978. My 2 cents. I raced H-18 for years. Sailed the P-18. Both great boats. Both 18's are similar. Think only the H has a Wing option. Never liked or used the wing on the last H-18 I had. In fact a casting on the wing I was hiking from snapped and threw me for a loop, so to speak.

I went to look at it today, the only problems I saw were; the rudder locks were kinda stiff and didn't engage easily, though they did eventually work. There was one soft spot from the roller, about an inch and a half wide, the holes used for mast-stepping had broken so raisin the mast with one person would be hard, and it's missing a turnbuckle for the forestay. In still thinking of picking it up for $500, the sails and tramp were great. I'll probably pick it up next weekend.  

That all sounds pretty easily addressed, and for $500 including a trailer that's a good deal for a working beach cat, assuming the sails are decent. Are the sails decent? Sounds like fun!  

sails looked really good, although apparently at one point one of the sails was mended (supposedly by a professional) and they accidentally sewed up the pockets of one of the battens so the very last batten on the bottom is missing. I figure one batten probably won't make that much of a difference, especially to someone who's never sailed a beach cat before, like me.  

Just make or purchase a new batten. I wouldn't sail missing a batten if I didn't have to.  

Hmm... in order to get it to go in i'd have to cut the stictches that were stitched into the batton pocket. Would missing the bottom batton make much of a difference?  

If it was me Id build the boat before some one beat me to it, you can worry about the batten pocket later. Its not something i would stress about. Not sure, maybe you cut cut the thread and sew it back up in that spot with a household sewing machine. If i need something small sewn up, i usually get my sister in law or my mom to do it for me, just because they are better at sewing than me. Prindles have pretty nice sail shapes with their battens in. I think it will sail better and look better with it in, but its not the end of the world. I had a bit of a learning curve learning to tack mine, theyre quite a bit different then the mono hulls i was used to. A couple of the posters on this thread gave me some pretty good tips on that, but having good sail shape will likely help a bit too.  

I would not let it stop you from getting the boat. could sail without he bottom one or sew a new pocket over the outside of the existing one to form a new pocket.  

So I pulled the trigger and picked it up on friday. First sailboat I've owned that didn't have a cabin! Now I just have to stare at it until the weather/water warms up a bit and give it a go. Fortunately I have another sailboat project that'll keep me occupied until it gets nicer around here. Thanks for all the help folks, it was invaluable.  

I'm jealous! Have fun.

Description.

Hobie Cat Company catamaran cover designed for Hobie 17 and Hobie 18 sailboats. Made from a tough woven polyethylene fabric to tolerate sun, wind, rain, and high and low temperatures.

• This is designed to fit a variety of boat lengths, cut into general catamaran shape. It is made of tough woven polyethylene that is coated on both sides, one side silver, one side black. Hobie has chosen this polyethylene because of its excellent resistance to ultra-violet degradation. It is a woven rather than sheet fabric to provide great tear strength. These covers will tolerate sun, wind, rain, high and low temperatures, and not fall apart. This fabric was specially designed for outdoor application. Install with silver side out.
• Each cover is cut to be used for a boat length range. Tapes are sewn in place to allow you to secure the cover around the hulls and crossbars. Custom features such as cut outs or slits for wires or wings can be created with scissors. The edges will not catch, fray, or pull. We include 5 feet of adhesive backed velcro with each kit to be used to prevent slits from flapping in the breeze.
• Cover is not designed to be used while trailering.
• Fits Hobie 17 and Hobie 18 catamarans.
• This cover can be modified to work with the mast up, and includes instructions for how to do so.
