az yacht club

Sailing at ASU is a sailing club open to people with all levels of experience! We sail FJs on Tempe Town Lake, located just 5 minutes from campus. Our team travels to California, Hawaii, and the Pacific Northwest to compete in regattas against other collegiate sailing teams. We also work with the Arizona Yacht Club. No prior experience is required to join the team: all we ask is that you come ready to learn!

Information

Some basic information of what involvement with Sailing at ASU looks like

Requirements

We charge dues of $100 a semester to help subsidize the cost of storing and maintaining our boats. Before joining, all members must pass a swim test and capsize test. We also ask that our members are compliant with the SDFC requirements of DoSportsEasy, and attend volunteering and social events with the team to ensure that we keep our funding.

We practice 4 times a week. 3 of these are on the water practices, and are held Thursdays at 4:30pm, and Fridays and Saturdays at 3pm. Our fourth practice is an on-land chalktalk, which is held on Monday evenings on or near campus.

We attend approximately 4 regattas in the fall, and 9 in the spring. Regattas are on weekends, and consist of 1 day of travel (Friday) and 2 days of competitive sailing (Saturday and Sunday). We now camp at regattas to save the club and its members money. At regattas where we do stay in hotels or hostels, we ask that each attending member pays $50 to help cover the cost of housing.

AZ Yacht Club Race – Championship

May 7, 2022.

az yacht club

Sailing is alive and well in the greater Phoenix area. Since our humble beginnings in 1958, AYC has continued to create the region’s best sailing opportunities for its members and guests! In addition to a love for all things sailing – camaraderie and friendships are a key part of what keeps the wind in our sails.

Every club event is organized, implemented and supported 100% by our member volunteers and we would not have survived this long without their knowledge, skill, commitment and care. We are certainly worth checking out if you’ve ever been curious about sailing.

Basically we socialize, we race, we cruise, and we have fun in the desert!

Lake Pleasant Sailing Club  (Motor Boaters Welcome)

The Lake Pleasant Sailing Club welcomes sailors and boaters of all stripes! We are an active Yacht Club based on Lake Pleasant, Ariz., (northwest of Phoenix). The Club also hosts boating events in California, on other Arizona lakes, and on land. The Club’s mission is to promote recreational and social programs, seamanship, and water safety. We encourage and establish good will among the Club and other yacht clubs and sailing associations. Last, we organize opportunities for members to take part in all forms of yachting and boating. For more information and dates of sailing events on Lake Pleasant, visit https://www.lakepleasantsailing.com/.

Getting To Lake Pleasant

Lake Pleasant, Ariz., is approximately 30 miles north of downtown Phoenix

The easiest access from Phoenix is from Interstate 17 (I-17), west onto State Route 74 (Carefree Highway), turn right onto 87th Avenue (Pleasant Harbor Road), and then left into the Pleasant Harbor Marina. In Mapquest or Google , enter “Lake Pleasant Regional Park.” And here’s a map of the lake showing the names of coves and access points. And a better, big color one.

There is a $6 charge to enter the marina grounds with (or without) a boat. After entering, turn left at the T intersection (the stop sign) to go to the South Ramp area where most AYC Members launch their boats. On race weekends, you’ll see a flock of AYCers setting up at Spinnaker Point (just to your left as you sit at the T after entering the grounds). If you turn right at the T, you’ll usually see the Thistles and others on the paved north lot, preparing to launch at the North Ramp.

You can also launch from the county park boat ramps or Scorpion Bay Marina, but most AYC off-the-water activities happen at Spinnaker Point, on marina land, at the south end of the lake.

Bottom Line

As their message on page 13 of this issue says, “Come to the FUN Side”. Sailing is only one of the exciting events and possibilities awaiting you at Lake Pleasant.

Lake Havasu Yacht Club History

In February 1969 three local enthusiastic boaters decided Lake Havasu should have a Yacht Club. These gentlemen put an article in the paper and a meeting was held at Smoketree School. The club was formed in meetings that were held at school and various locations on the lake.

The following year the Lake Havasu Yacht Club was formed with twenty-two original members. Our first Commodore was Bill Lampkin. The club incorporated as the Lake Havasu Yacht Club in September 1970. In 1972, the club secured a prefabricated metal building on the island that had been the engineering and construction offices for the London Bridge. Soon afterward, we became members of the United States Yacht Racing Union, an internationally recognized Association.

In 1983, the group began to seek a place for a permanent facility. An unused piece of land on London Bridge road was leased from the city in December 1986, and the drive to raise funds began. The Yacht Club moved into its new facility in January 1988.

The Yacht Club, sponsors and supports many community and youth related lake activities. Activities include social events, camping, cruises, races, regattas, and Lake Patrol for various events that take place in our city and on our lake. Future will include increasing sailboat racing activities, expanding youth programs, and improvements to our clubhouse.
