LADY J CREW PROFILES: CAPTAIN JARRYD VERMAAK Captain Jarryd was born in South Africa. He grew up in Durban spending his days on the beaches with his friends. Jarryd studied Marketing and advertising after school while working for a successful restaurant/cocktail bar opening new franchises around South Africa. Jarryd entered the yachting world in 2009 as deckhand onboard a 188’ Feadship. Since entering the wonderful world of luxury yachting, he has crossed the Atlantic 5 times and cruised many different waters including the Mediterranean, Caribbean, US East coast and the Gulf of Mexico. His hard work, attention to detail and growing knowledge, along with strong communication and entrepreneurship skills allowed him to work his way up to Captain of very busy private and Charter programs. Jarryd first joined LADY J in 2015. His longevity and charter experience have allowed him to hone his skills to provide a five-star yacht program and experience to guests every time. He is very team and guest focused. He has a lively bubbly personality and gets on with all guests, always sharing a joke or two, making for a memorable charter experience that guests won’t ever forget. In his free time, Jarryd enjoys diving, water sports, traveling, and reading. FIRST OFFICER PAUL SHELTON Paul was born in Durban, South Africa and grew up on the beach front surfing. In 2009 he moved to London and worked on the London underground as a Electricians mate before moving to the mediterranean to start his yachting career. Paul started working on classic sailing yachts and spent five years on a 109-year-old classic schooner. While onboard, Paul took part in over twenty classic sailing regattas in the mediterranean and Caribbean. Since then, he has worked on both sailing and motor yachts and worked his way up from deckhand to first officer. Paul had spent most of his yachting career in the Mediterranean but recently wanted to spend some time in America, which led him to Lady J. J Class: the enduring appeal of the world’s most majestic yachts

Yachting World

  • October 9, 2023

Only ten J Class yachts were built before the Second World War stopped the movement in its tracks, but in the last 20 years these magnificent sloops have made an incredible comeback. Why has the J Class remained irresistable? David Glenn explains.

yacht la j

One of the most awe-inspiring sights in modern yachting is the Spirit of Tradition fleet blasting off the start line at the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta. It happens every year at the end of April. Chances are it will include at least two J Class yachts, hitting the line on the gun at full tilt, exploding through the cobalt blue Caribbean rollers at anything up to 12 knots as they charge upwind.

Watching Velsheda , Ranger , Shamrock V and Endeavour will bring a lump to your throat, such is the emotion generated by these beautifully proportioned 130ft racing machines with their carbon rigs driving 170 tonnes of steel, aluminium and teak towards the weather mark. It’s heady stuff.

Watching them is one thing; racing quite another matter. In 1999 I was aboard the rebuilt Velsheda , taking part in the Antigua Classic Regatta. I had a single task as part of a four-man team – to tend the forward starboard runner. Nothing else. “Let that go once we’ve tacked and the whole rig comes down,” warned skipper Simon Bolt, as another wall of water thundered down the leeward deck and tried to rip me from the winch.

Dressed in authentic off-white, one-piece cotton boiler-suits, which had to be worn with a stout belt “so there’s something to grab if you go overboard”, they were tough, adrenaline-filled days out. God knows what it was like up forward as massive spinnakers were peeled and headsails weighing a quarter of a tonne were wrestled to the  needle-sharp foredeck as the bow buried itself into the back of yet another wave. Sometimes you daren’t look.

But with the race won or lost, back on the dock the feeling of elation, fuelled by being part of the 36-strong crew aboard one of these extraordinary yachts, triggered a high like no other. You knew you were playing a role, no matter how small, in a legendary story that began in 1930, was halted by World War II and then defied the pundits by opening another chapter 20 years ago. Today with five Js in commission, all in racing trim, and at least two more new examples about to be launched, the J Class phenomenon is back.

Why is the J Class so popular?

Why does a yacht with an arguably unexciting performance – they go upwind at 12 knots and downwind at 12 knots – costing £20 million to build and demanding eye-watering running costs, seem to be burgeoning during the worst recession since the class was born?

yacht la j

There is no single answer, but you only have to look back to the 1930s and the characters that owned and raced the Js on both sides of the Atlantic, sometimes for the America’s Cup , to understand why the class occupies a special place in yachting history. Underlying everything is the look of the J Class. It seems to transcend any change in yachting vogue, displaying a timeless line with outrageous overhangs and a proportion of hull to rig that is hard to better.

They possess true elegance. There is no doubt that captains of industry who want to flex their sporting muscle have been drawn to a class which only the very rich can afford and there are distinct parallels between J owners in the 1930s and those of the past 20 years. The difference is that in the 1930s owners liked to shout about their achievements and hogged the pages of national newspapers. Today, they are as quiet as mice.

Origins of the J Class

The J Class emerged in 1930 and marked a quantum leap in yachting technology, but comprised a hotchpotch of design altered over many years.

yacht la j

The J Class – so named because it was the letter allocated to its particular size by the Universal Rule to which the yachts were built (K and M Class yachts were, for example, shorter on the waterline) – emerged in 1930 and marked a quantum leap in yachting technology.

The so-called Big Class, which flourished in the UK in the 1920s, was impressive, but comprised a hotchpotch of design altered over many years. Yachts like King George V’s Britannia , built in 1893 as a gaff-rigged cutter but converted in the 1920s to Bermudan rig to rate as a J, Candida , Cambria , White Heather and schooners like Westward were even larger and more expensive to run. But as the greater efficiency of the Marconi or Bermudan rig became apparent their days were numbered.

One catalyst for the J Class itself was legendary grocer Sir Thomas Lipton’s final crack at challenging for the America’s Cup in 1931. He did so under the Universal Rule with the composite, wooden-planked, Charles E. Nicholson-design Shamrock V .

It was the 14th challenge since 1851 and the Americans, despite the withering effects of the Great Depression, reacted in dramatic fashion, organising their defence with four syndicates, each bulging with millionaires, putting forward separate Js: Enterprise , Whirlwind , Weetamoe and Yankee , which apart from Enterprise had already been launched.

Key to the American effort was the remarkable Harold Vanderbilt of the New York Yacht Club, who had inherited fabulous wealth from the family’s railroad companies, making him one of the country’s richest men.

Brought up on the family’s Idle Hour estate on Long Island Sound, he was a keen and accomplished sailor, and he used American technology and teamwork to build a far superior J in Enterprise. The defence completely overwhelmed Lipton’s effort. The British press castigated Lipton’s lack of preparedness and old-fashioned attitude. Vanderbilt, who among other things is credited with inventing contract bridge, left no stone unturned. “Mr. Harold Vanderbilt does not exactly go boat-sailing because summer is the closed season for fox-hunting,” stated an acerbic critic in the British yachting press.

Later when Shamrock was owned by aircraft builder Sir Richard Fairey and was being used to train crew for another Cup challenge, Beecher Moore, a skilful dinghy sailor who was draughted aboard the J to try to sort her out, reported in Yachts and Yachting many years later: “We found that when we got on board it was very much like a well-run country house, in that the gentleman does not go into the kitchen and on a well-run J Class the owner does not go forward of the mast.”

J Class tactics: Britain vs USA

A look at the huge gap between the British and American J Class tactics and designs in the early years of the America’s Cup.

yacht la j

In the early days there was a yawning gap between the way the Americans and British approached the Cup and, for that matter, how they ran a yacht. Revolutionary metal masts, Park Avenue booms to improve sail shape (the British copied this American design with their ‘North Circular’ version), bronze hulls that needed no painting, superior sails, and campaigns that cost £100,000 even in those days, blew away the Brits. Lipton had spent just £30,000 to build and equip Shamrock .

In the second Cup challenge in Js, in 1934, Sir T. O. M. Sopwith’s first Endeavour , also designed by Nicholson and equipped with wind instruments designed by her aircraft industrialist owner, nearly won the Cup, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory after leading the series 0-2. Sopwith was also up against Vanderbilt, who this time sailed Rainbow , which many considered to be the slower boat. But the British campaign was hobbled by a pay dispute – Endeavour ’s crew got £5 a week but they wanted a raise for ‘going foreign’ – and the campaign approach was again brought into question when the first thing to be stripped off the yacht when they won a dispute over reducing weight was the bath!

Back in Britain, the 1935 season proved to be the zenith of J Class and Big Class racing, although by the end of it the Js were under the cosh for their tendency to lose masts. Five went over the side that year and Endeavour II , launched with en eye on the next Cup challenge, lost hers twice.

There was added spice in the competition off the shores of the UK with the arrival of the American J Yankee , now owned by millionaire and Listerine businessman Gerard Lambert, who enjoyed sparring with the Brits. But even Yankee lost her mast and the press rounded on the class for being dangerous and wasteful! That wasn’t enough to stop Sopwith, whose tail had been extracted from between his legs following the last defeat in Newport: Endeavour II was towed across the Atlantic in a veritable armada that included  the first Endeavour. The British yachts found themselves up against the most advanced sailing machine the world had ever seen – Ranger , dubbed ‘the Super J’.

Vanderbilt was the man to beat again. Not only had he bankrolled the entire defence as American business remained beset by a struggling economy, but he used highly scientific means to perfect design. The brilliant naval architect Starling Burgess, who had designed for Vanderbilt throughout the 1930s, was now aided by the equally brilliant but considerably more youthful Olin Stephens. Between them they finally selected ‘model 77-C’ from six tank tested.

The yacht was considered ugly by some and not a natural to look at, but Vanderbilt’s team trusted the science (still the difference between the Americans and the Brits) and Ranger with her bluff or barrel bow and ‘low slung’ counter was the result. She proved to be dynamite on the race course and Endeavour II didn’t stand a chance. She was beaten in five straight races by large margins. The Americans and Vanderbilt had done it again. War then brought an end to an extraordinary era in yachting.

Only ten J Class yachts were built to the Universal rule and not a single American yacht survived. Most were scrapped for the war effort. In any case, the American way was to discard the machine once it has served its purpose. In Britain they faired a little better, and some Js were mud-berthed on the East and South Coasts. Two survived in the UK: Velsheda , originally built by the businessman who ran Woolworths in the UK (W. L. Stevenson named her after his daughters Velma, Sheila and Daphne), but which never challenged for the America’s Cup; and Endeavour , saved by becoming a houseboat on the Hamble. Shamrock ended up in Italy and survived the war hidden in a hay barn.

J Class resurgence

Seemingly resigned to the history books, the J Class made a triumphant return in the 1980s.

In his seminal book about the J Class, Enterprise to Endeavour, yachting historian Ian Dear predicted in the first edition in 1977 that the likes of the Js would never be seen again. By the time the fourth edition was published in 1999 he was quite happily eating his words!

The American Elizabeth Meyer was, without doubt, instrumental in bringing the class back to life when in the 1980s she extracted what was left of Endeavour from a  amble mud-berth, began rebuilding her in Calshot, and then moved her to Royal Huisman in Holland, who completed the restoration superbly. With the transom of the original Ranger mounted on a bulkhead in her saloon, Endeavour is still regarded as one of the best-looking and potentially fastest Js.

She was owned briefly by Dennis Kozlowski, the disgraced tycoon who ran Tyco, who famously said: “No one really owns Endeavour, she’s part of yachting history. I’m delighted to be the current caretaker.” Unfortunately he ended up in prison and the State of New York became Endeavour’s ‘caretaker’ before they sold her to her current owner, who has kept the yacht in the Pacific. She’s currently being refitted in New Zealand.

Ronald de Waal is a Dutchman who until recently was chairman of the Saks Group in the USA and has made a fortune in clothing. He has dedicated a lot of time to improving Velsheda over the years since he had her rebuilt by Southampton Yacht Services to a reconfigured design by Dutch naval architect Gerry Dykstra. Ronald de Waal steers the yacht himself to great effect and has had some legendary tussles with Ranger, the new Super J built in Denmark for American realestate magnate John Williams.

The rivalry between the two is fierce and even led to a collision between the yachts in Antigua last year. But Velsheda would have been lost had it not been for British scrap-metal merchant Terry Brabant who saved her from a muddy grave on  the Hamble and famously sold his Rolls-Royce to cast a new lead keel for the yacht. With very little modern equipment he sailed her hard in the Solent, chartering her and crossing the Atlantic for a Caribbean season, all without an engine! Without Brabant’s initiative Ronald de Waal wouldn’t have what he has today.

Shamrock V is owned by a Brazilian telecommunications businessman Marcos de Moraes who had the yacht rebuilt at Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth in 2001. He tends to keep away from the race course but with a number of events being planned in the run-up to the 2012 London Olympics he might be tempted back. The latest new J to launch, Hanuman, a modern interpretation of Endeavour II, has recently entered the racing fray. She was commissioned by serial yacht owner Jim Clark (Hyperion and Athena), the American who brought us Netscape and Silicon Graphics, and who remains a colossus in Silicon Valley.

Hanuman, named after a Hindu deity, built by Royal Huisman and designed by Gerry Dykstra, has had no expense spared when it comes to rig and sail wardrobe. Last year she beat Ranger in the Newport Bucket but in March this year she lost out 2-1 to the same boat at the St Barths Bucket. They were due to meet again with Velsheda at the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta in April. Another Dutchman, property developer Chris Gongriep, who has owned a number of yachts including Sapphire and Windrose of Amsterdam, has given the go-ahead for a new  version of Rainbow, which is well advanced in Holland at Freddie Bloesma’s aluminium hull fabrication yard. The yacht, reconfigured by Gerry Dykstra, will be in the water in 2011 with a full-on race programme.

About to be launched is Lionheart, the biggest J so far, redesigned by Andre Hoek and built in Holland by Claasen Jachtbouw, after an extensive research programme.  Unfortunately, her owner’s business commitments mean that he won’t be able to enjoy the fruits of this project – she’s for sale with Yachting Partners International and Hoek Brokerage. What an opportunity to join a class with such a remarkable history and one which looks destined to run and run!

Welcome To Los Angeles, California

First of all, there’s nowhere quite like Los Angeles because with its beautiful Pacific beaches, mountains, bike paths, yacht rentals, cruises, and nightlife with no end, Tinsel Town, has little shortage of pretty much anything. Even more, Beverly Hills with its sprawling mansions and the seriously high-end shopping spots along the world famous Rodeo Drive.

Natural Los Angeles Splendor

Also, Angelenos are busy riding waves, chartering their yacht, hiking, staying close to nature, or keeping in shape by climbing the Santa Monica Stairs . Most noteworthy, despite Los Angeles having such a large head count, Los Angeles is a city intertwined with Mother Nature. As a result her dense, elaborate neighborhoods rest along golden beaches, her city streets lead up to flower-carpeted hillsides, and huge, deep-blue skies are an Instagram filter for sunsets during your yacht charter or yacht rental made especially for you.

A Place for Foodies

Because there is nothing better than the food scene! Los Angeles has AMAZING restaurants and while it may have less Michelin stars than San Francisco, Los Angeles certainly makes an argument for more of its own winners with cuisines to die for. Try Michaels in Santa Monica or Mercedes Bar & Grille in Marina del Rey or Venice Beach and you will not be disappointed. Made famous from I Love You Man try California’s best tacos at James Beach in Venice. Los Angeles has the country’s most authentic Korean and one of the nation’s largest concentrations of vegan restaurants. Lastly, dirty martinis in a speak easy type setting, to brews crafted to perfection, Los Angeles offers otherworldly adventures worthy of the most discerning taste buds.

Creative Hub

Another thing is the creative hub. Dreams are quite serious in Los Angeles from actors and musicians to techies hoping to code their way into the next new thing online. Also, Los Angeles is a home to Hollywood, a city where imagination is almost mandatory. Therefore you will find yourself wrapped in layers of legend and history. As a result, annually countless dreamers land at LAX making their way to the streets of Los Angeles vying for their piece of the American Dream. Almost everyone is a writer, a producer just trying share their dreams with Los Angeles and someday, the world. Seems like the result is a whirlpool of creativity, edgy Venice art spaces, iconic rock venues, and critically acclaimed concert, all fueling a city addicted to the love of art and fame.

Architectural Gems

Los Angeles’s obsession with creative expression extends to its architecture. After all, this is where movie palaces look like Chinese temples and ancient Egyptian tombs, where concerts halls twist and curve like steely cartoon characters, and where soda bottling plants look like landlocked ocean liners. Indeed, Los Angeles celebrates architectural diversity with astounding gusto. From storybook Hollywood abodes and Silver Lake modernist prototypes, to downtown theaters channeling the Palace of Versailles, no other American city delivers such a thrilling mash-up of architectural styles, statements and role models…often on the very same palm-studded street.

However, there’s more to Los Angeles than famous names, with suburbs such as Malibu and Venice Beach boasting cultural gems as well as quirky shops and interesting boutiques. The former is also home to the picturesque Malibu Pier, which has a gorgeous organic restaurant at the end, and the magnificent Getty Villa, crammed with Grecian gems.

La Datcha: The 77m bronzed explorer built for heli-skiing adventures

Designed for the paths less travelled yet still glamorous to its core, 77 metre La Datcha is as unconventional as superyachts come. BOAT discovers its many charms .

The Russian word datcha means “a second home in the countryside”. The French definite article la adds a touch of elegance. La Datcha certainly seems a fitting name for this 77-metre from Damen Yachting’s new SeaXplorer range , a boat sophisticated enough for Mediterranean bays but built for adventure in faraway places.

  • On board SeaXplorer 77 expedition yacht La Datcha on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula

From day one her owner, Oleg Tinkov , made it clear that although he intends to spend time on board, he wants La Datcha to generate revenue. Tinkov is a self-made man known for building several brands, including his greatest pride, the online Tinkoff Bank. His La Datcha Tinkoff Collection comprises luxury boutique hotels with a sports theme, ranging from ski chalets in Val Thorens and Courchevel in the French Alps, to villas in Cabo San Lucas in Baja California (ideal for offshore fishing and watersports). This ultra-luxurious explorer yacht is the latest addition to the portfolio and is being offered for charter in remote areas such as Kamchatka in the far east of Russia, Antarctica and Papua New Guinea.

Born in a coal-mining town in south Siberia, Tinkov, who currently resides in London, lived for a time in the US and studied at the University of California, Berkeley. He has travelled the world extensively, from Madagascar to Greenland. Likewise, his yachting experience is diverse – from a Pershing he uses to entertain guests of the La Datcha palazzo in Forte dei Marmi, Italy, to superyacht charters in the Seychelles and Maldives.

“Once we even rented an ice-breaker,” says his daughter, Dasha Tinkova, marketing and sales director of La Datcha Tinkoff Collection. With a passion for extreme sports, Tinkov is a devoted heli-skier. Having explored the Alps, he started to look for other destinations and soon realised that the best way to get to places such as Kamchatka or Alaska would be aboard a superyacht. But what kind of superyacht?

“Oleg Tinkov had considered buying a yacht for some time and was attracted by the clean vertical lines of the Amels 199 [now the Amels 206 ] Limited Editions design, with its axe-bow,” recalls Rose Damen, managing director at Damen Yachting, parent company to Amels. “But once he saw the SeaXplorer concept, his eyes turned to that design.”

Born at the onset of the explorer yacht boom, the SeaXplorer concept was designed for remote adventures. The first hull, 62-metre Anawa , launched in October 2019. “We had taken the new IMO Polar Code and Ice Class into consideration when developing the SeaXplorer,” says Damen. It therefore has retractable stabilisers and a strengthened hull to withstand drifting ice floes and submerged logs, while enclosed bridge wings offer panoramic visibility and protection for watchkeepers in bad weather.

While Tinkov was drawn to a 65-metre iteration of the SeaXplorer design, he soon realised it could carry only one helicopter, which was not sufficient for his plans. Stefano Feltrin is managing director of La Datcha and the technical supervisor who oversaw the explorer’s design and construction. He explains their requirements thus: “As we will operate outside the range of rescue services, we will need the ability to fly two helicopters simultaneously for safety reasons; while in Antarctica, regulations require two choppers for heli-skiing or heli-safari. So we went for a 72 metre. This was later extended to 77 metres to allow for a full range of watersports, including a dive centre and submarine operations.”

This is a vital aspect of La Datcha : as well as being able to get to remote destinations, her treasure trove of tenders and toys will allow guests to thoroughly enjoy themselves when they arrive. To this end, an important feature is the 9.26-metre custom rescue boat/limousine tender, built by Fassmer, which, when mounted in its open bay on the mothership, completes the exterior perfectly. Designed to the owner’s brief, it follows La Datcha closely in both style and colour.

To accommodate such accessories for exploration, the traditional superyacht layout was significantly revised. The whole of the main deck aft is an enclosed and purely functional working area devoted to a garage for a 9.1-metre RIB tender by Insider Yachts, launched through a shell door, and for two Airbus H125 helicopters that are raised by a lift to the fully certified open flight deck on the upper deck aft. This arrangement allows crew to launch tenders and quickly prepare helicopters for flight. Refuelling is done from a tank carrying approximately 10,000 litres of jet fuel, which equates to approximately 40 hours’ flight time or a 5,000-nautical-mile range.

“The remote nature of these cruising areas with their lack of shoreside infrastructure, means the yacht needs to be comfortable and self-sufficient for extended periods. This philosophy extends to all aspects of the design, from spaces for the owner and guests, to being able to carry all the equipment and supplies you may need to use the yacht as a launchpad for adventure,” says Rob McCallum of EYOS Expeditions, which was chosen by Damen Yachting as a partner in the development of the SeaXplorer range. Having completed more than 1,500 expeditions in remote areas in the last 20 years, EYOS was integral in proposing and realising up to 155 design features to ensure every SeaXplorer, including La Datcha , is a truly capable vessel.

The challenge for La Datcha’s designers, Azure , was to make this potentially brawny vessel look dynamic, yacht-like and well proportioned. The initial brief from Damen Yachting at the inception of the SeaXplorer design was to create “a powerful, head-turning hybrid that merged the strength and heritage of the Damen Sea Axe hull and lines with the traditional beauty of an Amels,” says Erik Spek, director of Azure, “while making her clearly recognisable as part of the Damen Yachting fleet.” Azure drew inspiration from the play of light and shadow on the jagged edges of polar ice shelves.

Inside, La Datcha has six decks and, helped by her 14-metre beam, boasts an impressive volume of 2,560GT. The central part of the upper deck contains the main saloon and an inside/outside dining saloon with an adjacent pantry. The bridge deck also hosts a saloon, with another dining area. Guest cabins are divided between the forward sections of both main and upper decks, with the master suite foremost on the main deck.

The lower deck aft hosts a wellness centre with spa and gym, while forward on this deck are 10 twin-bunked cabins for officers and crew and three twin-bunk cabins for expedition staff. The hospital, a formality required by class, includes full quarantine facilities and dedicated air-conditioning and sewage systems.

Perhaps the most striking feature of La Datcha is the enclosed observation lounge in the nose of the bow on the upper deck, with a 270-degree panoramic view and adjacent open deck from where guests may enjoy the scenery. This area was designed so that those on watch can see forward and operate the vessel safely, while guests also benefit from superb views.

The core idea of La Datcha’s design is to catch every magic moment of natural beauty and wildlife. Wherever guests are, they can get their gear together easily, ready for adventure. The layout allows simple movement throughout, up to the observation lounge or down to the tender bay. On their way to and from adventures, guests need a place to don and doff protective gear that has got wet or dirty. And this is the purpose of the spacious mudroom located on the main deck aft, where expedition gear is cleaned, dried and stored, ready for the next outing (the room also serves as storage for the heli-ski gear).

But while she’s an explorer through and through, La Datcha is also a genuinely luxurious yacht. The owner wanted the interior to be simple and natural but chic and unusual at the same time. His chosen interior designer, Vasiliy Shprits, and his team from St Petersburg, Russia, had never designed a yacht but the owner did not want the interior of La Datcha to look “yachty”. “My goal was to make the interior look like a luxurious land-based residence,” says Shprits. “Not too much fixed furniture or smooth edges. No polished surfaces, no gold, no Swarovski crystals. Instead, some nice loose furniture, natural oak, leather, bronze, natural marble and onyx, stone mosaics or wool rugs.

“We are really grateful to our knowledgeable German interior subcontractor, Vedder, who guided us kindly and wisely throughout the interior design and who has done the impossible,” he adds. “For instance, by finding a way to produce an incredible iceberg-looking bar for the main saloon or invisibly fixing bronze insects [he calls them “termites”] over the bedheads in the second master cabin according to our vision of bringing ‘wildlife’ aboard, or allowing us to place a distinctive bronze sculpture by Giò Pomodoro in the observation lounge.” Promemoria, meanwhile, produced much spectacular furniture for the design.

The interior palette is subtle, not flashy. The main deck and lower deck decor revolves around a water theme while the upper deck is devoted to earth. Jellyfish-shaped lamps from Wired Custom Lighting in the gym and coffee tables with silver fish in the master cabins play out the water theme beautifully. The pattern of decorative panels in the main saloon may appear traditionally Russian to some, but for others it will evoke a Mexican vibe. The theme of fire, particularly important to the owner, is reflected in the stunning bronze hull paint and the fireplaces in the upper deck saloon.

There’s also an egalitarian aspect to the interior. The layout accommodates two similar master suites as well as a VIP suite, plus three guest cabins on the upper deck – a layout that allows the owner to offer equal accommodation when inviting two business partners or friends. A 2.2-metre ceiling height, meanwhile, gives the cabins an exceptionally spacious feeling.

Of course, a true expedition yacht is unthinkable without a spa and wellness centre. On La Datcha it offers direct access to the beach club and the fully equipped gym. A traditional hammam and Finnish sauna made by the German spa specialist Klafs are supplemented by an LED-lit stalagmite ice fountain that allows guests to enjoy the contrast of cold ice on hot skin after a sauna. “Unlike conventional ice fountains, this one grows upwards and it is a truly delightful attraction, especially with changing LED background lighting,” says Martin Schaidnagl, the responsible project manager at Vedder.

All these features have already attracted lots of interest. “Can you imagine, La Datcha is already booked for 18 consecutive weeks,” says the owner with obvious pleasure. “It is a record in the superyacht industry, and we are really proud of it.” Victoria Verhovskaia, charter fleet manager at Edmiston , who is responsible for La Datcha’s charter bookings, says part of the interest stems from the unconventional itinerary. That included the Kamchatka Peninsula in spring and summer 2021. From September to May, Kamchatka is covered with powder snow from Siberia, making it perfect for heli-skiing, but after the snow melts, the area’s 160 volcanoes and the Valley of Geysers, impossible to reach without helicopters, are also great to explore.

“We already hired the best heli-ski and local guides to serve our guests,” says Alistair Reid, captain of La Datcha . Looking to the future, the yacht is heading for Antarctica in the second half of 2021, returning to Kamchatka in 2022, and stopping off to cruise in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands on the way back north. “There is a new generation of adventurous yacht owners that are keen to maximise their experiences, exploring some of the most remote regions on Earth,” says McCallum. “It is great to see La Datcha’s owner embrace this spirit of exploration and really use his yacht for the adventures she was designed to make.” And it’s not just Tinkov who’ll appreciate her: La Datcha will appeal to all who seek luxurious adventure – ice fountain and ice bar included.

The first pavilion of Crocus Expo IEC hosted an extraordinary exposition of the 5th International exhibition of yachts and boats Moscow Boat Show. The show had been incredibly famous for five years already not only thanks to the specialists of the market segment as well as professional sportsmen but also thanks to those who consider sailing sport to be their hobby and well cherished dream.

Moscow Boat Show 2012

Moscow Boat Show 2012

The organizer of the project was the Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre. The show was supported by Aston Martin Moscow, Burevestnik Group logistics department and the Yachting specialized magazine.

The exposition space increased up to 30 000 sq m and was accommodated in all 4 exhibition halls of the fairgrounds! 280 Russian (Arkhangelsk, Vyborg, Kazan, Kaluga, Republic of Karelia, Moscow and Moscow region, Nizhny Novgorod, Novorossiysk, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, St. Petersburg, Sverdlovsk region, Sochi, Chelyabinsk, Tyumen and Yaroslavl region) and foreign ( Denmark , Germany , Holland , Greece , Spain , Italy , Cyprus , China , Latvia , Poland , USA , Turkey , Ukraine, Finland , France , Montenegro and Croatia ) companies participate in the show.

Moscow Boat Show provided the perfect platform from which to preview new products, evaluate market trends, and establish long-lasting and commercially profitable partnerships. Despite the dynamic changes taking place in Russia and the rapid growth of the yachting sector, the show continued to complement and reflect the industry’s demand and is a promotional opportunity not to be missed!

Unique exhibits were presented at the show for the first time: exposition of private submarines from U-Boat Russia company, Marquis Yachts 420 SB motor yacht from Sport Bridge S. Marine series, SAGA-415 yacht from Saga Boats Norwegian shipyard, Jetlev-Flyer from MS Watersports.

Moscow Boat Show a Great Success

More than 400 yachts were displayed within the frames of the event including the largest boats ever exhibited in Russia – the 19-meter giant motor yacht Princess 54 as well as the Princess 50 yacht from Nord Marine and Baja speed boat from Burevestnik.

Domfinland OY unveiled a luxury project from Finnish real estate: a seaside premium class hotel in Hanko named consonant with the location Merihanko.

The trade fair was traditionally opened by a Gala Opening Ceremony. Arcady Zlotnikov, First Deputy Director Crocus Expo IEC, was the first to take the floor at the official opening ceremony. He greeted warmly exhibitors, guests and visitors of Moscow Boat Show. Nikolay Krjuchek, Deputy Chief of the State Inspection on Small size Vessels (GIMS) of the Ministry for Emergency Situations of Russia, Georguiy Shaiduko, Acting President of the Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS), Olympic champion in Atlanta and Ekaterina Grishechkina, Director of exhibition Moscow Boat Show also spoke at the ceremony.

The high-ranking guests noted dynamic development of the branch which well reasoned the intensive growth of the exposition and appearance of rather unique “gems”.

A number of business meetings and negotiations were held within the frames of the project: the exhibition was visited by a large delegation of Greek businessmen for the purpose of establishment of mutually beneficial cooperation with the Russian colleagues.

Russian Yachting Federation (VFPS) celebrated its 100 anniversary within the frames of Moscow Boat Show and arranged an exposition of future sailing sport museum (rare awards, gifts, articles from private collections, pictures and etc.) which had been collected since 1912.

Due to carefully chosen running dates the show was visited by more than 26 000 people. The majority of the visitors were of targeted audience – vessel owners and specialists of the branch.

The work at the next edition of the show is under way! The show will be held in March 2013. The overall exhibit space will comprise 40 000 sq m. The exhibition will impress with exclusive exhibits and the latest technological achievements.

Moscow Boat Show was not only an entertaining but at the same time a business promotional event. Participation in the trade fair was a unique opportunity to present a company and products to a distinctly selected targeted audience of industry specialists. They were well prepared to discuss business in the Russian market and even to close a deal on-site.

The show helped representatives of yachting business to get acquainted with their Russian colleagues and gradually improved national yachting market to a new level. It is obvious that for 5 years of its running the project has turned to a status event of the international exhibitions calendar.

Jim Harbaugh: J.J. McCarthy's killer instinct, kind heart make him best QB in 2024 NFL draft

yacht la j

ORLANDO, Fla. – Jim Harbaugh is doubling down on his confidence for Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy .

Harbaugh believes McCarthy – not USC’s Caleb Williams , LSU’s Jayden Daniels or North Carolina’s Drake Maye – is the best quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft .

“I’ve said it before and it’s well documented: I think he’s the best quarterback in the draft. That’s just what I think. It’s my opinion,” Harbaugh, the former Michigan coach and new Los Angeles Chargers coach, said during NFL league meetings on Monday.

And his reasoning? Well, it’s exactly the type of comment you’d expect from the quirky Harbaugh.

“He’s the one who plays quarterback of all the quarterbacks in the draft,” Harbaugh said of McCarthy. “There are great quarterbacks in the draft, but I think he plays quarterback the best of any quarterback in the draft.”

All things Chargers: Latest Los Angeles Chargers news, schedule, roster, stats, injury updates and more.

Hey, you can’t blame Harbaugh for campaigning for his old starter.

While Williams, Daniels and Maye are widely considered the top 3 players in the 2024 NFL draft, McCarthy may be valued behind others in the field like Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. and Oregon’s Bo Nix.

Still, Harbaugh says McCarthy has a killer instinct and a kind heart that also separates him from the others.

“He’ll be hit, and this killer comes out. Whether it’s good or it’s bad, he’s got an extra gear, especially when he’s challenged,” Harbaugh said.

“And you also see the big personality, and do anything for another guy on the team, for a small kid that walks up to him. My son Jack feels like JJ is one of his really good friends. He’s incredible.

“Big market, small market. Cold weather, hot weather. It wouldn’t matter,” Harbaugh added on McCarthy, who was a two-year starter at Michigan, and completed 72.3 percent of his passes for 2,991 yards, 22 touchdowns with four interceptions and a 167.4 passer rating last season.

McCarthy was 28-1 as Harbaugh’s quarterback at Michigan.

Kendrick Lamar Disses Drake and J. Cole on Future and Metro Boomin’s New Song ‘Like That’

Kendrick Lamar made an uncredited appearance on Future and Metro Boomin’s new album “We Don’t Trust You,” and with it delivered a series of apparently sharp, pointed words for Drake and J. Cole .

Lamar, whose fiery verse lights up “Like That,” steals the spotlight on the track, where he addresses a few bars from Drake and J. Cole’s “First Person Shooter” included on the former’s “For All the Dogs.” On that song, which released last year, J. Cole makes mention of the “big three,” referring to Lamar, Drake and himself: “Love when they argue the hardest emcee / Is it K. Dot? Is it Aubrey? Or me? / We the big three like we started a league.”

On “Like That,” Lamar directly references the rappers’ bars and comes gunning for them. “Yeah get up with me, fuck sneak dissing / ‘First Person Shooter,’ I hope they came with three switches,” he raps, later adding, “Motherfuck the big three, n—a, it’s just big me.”

Later in the verse, he comes for the quality of their music and says that his legacy will outlast their influence, comparing himself to Prince and his relationship to Michael Jackson. “Your best work is a light pack / N—a, Prince outlived Mike Jack / N—a, bum, ‘fore all your dogs get buried / That’s a K with all these nines, he gon’ see Pet Sematary.”

This isn’t the first time that Lamar has stirred up controversy by directly referencing his peers. In 2013, he delivered a scene-stealing verse on Big Sean’s “Control,” also featuring Jay Electronica, running down a list of rappers and stating that while he has love for all of them, he sees them as competitors and intends to bring them down.

While Lamar’s verse on “Like That” was certainly the most newsworthy moment from the album, Future and Metro Boomin’s long-awaited collaborative project “We Don’t Trust You” arrived on Friday, marking the first of two releases from the pair. The second, which is currently untitled, will be released on April 12.

DIRECT.
