5 steps for stress free boat storage this winter

Do you own a boat that is the apple of your eye? What happens when you hand it over to a boatyard for lifting out of the water and storing? writes Roger Nadin

Do you know why one marina uses a crane and boat mover when another uses a slipway trailer, or why one yard uses props to keep your boat upright and another stores your boat in a cradle?

Do you know how much money your yard invests in purchasing boat handling equipment and in training yard staff?

Cradles are the preferred method of storing yachts over winter

As with most things, the answer to these questions depend on factors such as geology, geography, staff experience and finance available.

The days of seeing a mobile crane lurching about a yard with a boat swinging on a single hook are, fortunately, long gone.

Today the highest capital cost that a marina will probably incur is purchasing good boat handling equipment.

So, what are the choices:

• A slipway trailer (a boat mover built for immersion in saltwater) towed by a good used tractor is the least expensive option. But the yard or marina is still looking at the fat-end of £150,000 to fully equip itself to handle 20T yachts and may need to add on the cost of building a slipway. These units can move boats from the water to a storage area quickly and efficiently and usually store boats quite close together – thus saving on storage costs. Such equipment has to be built to survive the ravages of salt water so, lots of stainless steel, high-quality oil-rig grade paint etc. One thing to note is that it is a myth to believe that the hydraulically-operated support pads are used to lift the boat – they are not. The pads provide adjustable support for the hull but the actual lifting is done by the hydraulic lifting and lowering of the full frame.
• Higher in cost is a self-propelled travel or power-hoist which travels out over the water on a twin-track jetty. This unit can again take boats from the water to storage quickly but there’s the added cost of building the jetty and the disadvantage that the width of the hoist means that boats cannot be stored close together.
• Of similar or maybe much higher cost is a yacht crane with a boat mover (towed or self-propelled). A crane is ideal when installed on a harbour wall. A four-hook crane provides excellent control of a vessel as it is swung after lifting and is transferred to a boat mover. The cost of a crane includes the finance required to build the piling in the ground on which the crane is installed – this can vary considerably, and careful, professional ground investigation is required before the final decision can be made about installing a crane.
• Lastly, we can go back to the slipway idea but look at a self-propelled semi-submersible boat mover. These can be quick, efficient and easy to use by minimal staff. But good semi-submersibles come at a high cost since everything must be built to withstand submersion in and the effects of saltwater.

So, now your boat is out of the water, are the staff well trained and are they using the best boat support system to keep your boat safe?

It’s a fact that, until recently, yard staff had little training and much that was available would come under the heading of “we’ve always done it that way”.

Yard and marina staff are very hard-working guys often working in all weathers.

Until recently there has been little or no formal training.

This is gradually changing with equipment manufacturers providing on-site training and the better, more up to date marinas insisting that staff are trained.

What about the cradle that your yard has stored your yacht in or the legs/props that have been used to support your craft? How good are they?

Do they come from a factory that has thoroughly tested them? A small number of manufacturers put such equipment through wind-tunnel tests but very few.

And is your boat by the sea? If so, is your yard using galvanised steel props/stands so that they are protected from the ravages of salty winds?

It is frightening to see yards using steel props that are rusting from the inside out or, heaven forbid, still using wooden props.

If your stored yacht is kept with its mast up through the winter months, has the yard stored it with its bow to the prevailing winds – if not, why not?

The hull of a boat presents a large area for the wind to push against – have yard staff strapped your boat down to keep it secure?

So, what is stopping every marina or yard having the most up to date and best built boat handling equipment?

As with so many businesses money is the main answer.

Yard and marina owners must be experts in so many areas and there’s usually an accountant trying to keep costs down.

A yard manager may make a different decision to a yard owner – the first having to ensure his annual figures look good, the other trying to ensure that his long-term business gets the best value.

The manager looking for a new slipway trailer will see that there’s a wide range of products on the market.

Some of these trailers look very similar and operate in the same way – in fact some are just cheaper copies of original designs.

Ensure the yacht is strapped down in the cradle

Some slipway trailers cost many thousands of pounds more than others. How does the manager choose?

Pressure to keep costs down may well have him/her choosing the cheapest. Just maybe, the yard will later regret this when poorer materials and workmanship come to light – possibly after the manager has moved to another yard.

Regrettably some yards and marinas find that choosing lower cost equipment can bring almost immediate disappointment: a boat’s hull damaged by poor-quality support pads on a new trailer; a cheaply bought slipway trailer collapsing under the weight of a craft that is just on the trailer’s maximum capacity.

It’s very much a case that “you get what you pay for” when it comes to boat storage.

So, what boat storage lessons can we learn from other’s experience?

• Firstly, ensure that you know how much your boat really weighs and exactly what your yard is capable of lifting. There is no point in you asking a yard with a 12T slipway trailer to slip you 10T craft to which you have added such things as additional fuel tanks, a generator and other heavy bits and pieces. A crushed slipway trailer is not a pretty sight!
• Talk to yard staff about their machinery – why they are using the equipment that they have, how often is it serviced and what training do they undertake so that you can have confidence in what they do.
• Some yards supply cradles for yachts, some lease them to boat owners and some expect owners to supply them. Cradles tend to be a preferred method of storing a yacht through the winter – it can and should be strapped down. In exposed yards, sailboats should be stored bow-to the prevailing wind.
• If your boat is supported by props, check the quality of these and make sure the props are strapped or chained together. This ensures that, should one leg be accidentally knocked or driven in to, it should not move and endanger your craft.
• Befriend, talk to and visit your yard staff and ensure they understand that you really are interested in how your craft is looked after. And if you have any concerns about boat storage, raise these with the marina manager.

At night when the wind is howling and you are tucked up in bed, you’ll sleep more soundly safe in the knowledge that you and the yard staff have done all that you can.

The new Swan 80 has been designed thanks to the renowned naval architect Germán Frers creating the overall concept and naval architecture, Lucio Micheletti the exterior style and Misa Poggi the interior style.

A fresh new look on deck features wood covered cockpit coamings ­— which have been extended further aft for crew comfort — that add a new perspective to the yacht. With its modern, uncluttered look the design speaks of neatness and efficiency.

Below deck the Swan 80 has the space and capacity to offer a wide variety of cabin configurations and open areas to meet all requirements.

The architect

The new Swan 51 offers design and practical solutions that make the yacht comfortable and easy to sail from coastal waters to long offshore passages. The Swan 51 also features a mast which has been moved more to the centre of the yacht, further enhancing balance.

Ultimately, like all Swans, the 51 is a no-compromise sailing yacht, a pure sailor, more a sportscar than a limousine. It is designed to be reactive to steer and responsive to sail adjustments, bringing the sensations of sailing alive.

With options

The Swan 80’s near flush wooden deck serves to highlight the discreet and streamlined coachroof running aft from the mast.

As the whole aft cockpit section of the yacht is flat, it allows any configuration of seating, ondeck storage or other furnishings that might be desired. It is also possible, of course, to remove all deck furniture when in racing mode.

Similarly the open aft deck can be set up for swimming and sunbathing when in cruising configuration, with easy access to the beach area and swimming platform, which in turn are adjacent to the full beam lazarette which can easily accommodate a rigid inflatable boat.

The Swan 80 features twin rudders for directional stability, a tapered hull entrance and powerful aft section, with design allowing optimal balance between performance and stability at different angles of heel.

The hull’s construction of foam cored glass fibre reinforced epoxy with carbon fibre unidirectional reinforcements ensures solidity and durability.

Exterior Designer

Lucio micheletti.

A skilful combination of traditional styling and taut forms, an interplay of materials that creates a lively chiaroscuro with a marked dynamic quality (what the architect Micheletti calls ‘quayside speed’). The cockpit offers the typical three-area division that characterises all Swans. The front area, close to the deckhouse and protected by a sprayhood and a bimini top (a retractable model with rigid structure is optional), is dedicated to guests.

The interior designer

Versatility and flexibility are the order of the day when heading below decks on the Swan 80.

A variety of optional configurations are available for the location of cabins, sitting and dining areas. One possibility sees the spacious owners cabin located forward, with another four guest and VIP cabins all with en suite facilities.

The crew quarters are organised in an area aft, with independent access to the cockpit, engine room and other technical areas to avoid disturbing guests. Another possibility allows for the temporary conversion of a guest cabin for crew use, so increasing crew from 2 to 5.

The already spacious saloon area can be further increased by utilising the space of one guest cabin for an additional TV or dining area — another nod to the maxi philosophy.

Timeless Classic

The yacht is fitted with natural materials such as linen, cotton and leather in shades of white, naturally light colours, natural brown and putty tones for leather. These blend with light durmast wood, giving the yacht a sophisticated feel and bringing warm, sunny countries to mind.

TraditionalNavy

Linens and cottons in navy blue and shaded white blend with various shades of tobacco in fabric and leather. There is also the traditional wood used for sailing, namely natural teak, taking those on board back to the long-established seafaring concept of historical sailing clubs.

Natural fabrics such as linen and cotton are featured in different shades of wine, Cowes red and the fundamental shaded white. There is also “drunken” leather and Canaletto walnut, bringing to mind the Admiral’s Cup and Fastnet Race triumphs of sports sailing.

Spirit of Finland

A typical modern Swan interior featuring an under-stated Nordic approach with use of hand-crafted timbers and seaworthy detailing. Light European oak and walnut floorboards are paired with carefully selected performance fabrics in light natural colours and earthy leather accents for a soft touch. A timeless, light yacht interior from the land of the midnight sun.

Pull up to the Swan Point Yacht & Country Club by boat at the community marina on Cuckold Creek near the 16th hole. There’s no fee to dock your boat while playing golf. If you call ahead, our staff will meet you with a cart and take you to the Clubhouse and the first tee.

Members may also enjoy all the amenities of the marina, which has power and water, boat storage and parking facilities, lighting, an electric security gate, and access to some of the best fishing and crabbing spots in the area.

Nautor Swan continues the expansion in its motor yacht division by presenting Swan OverShadow , the 13+ meter power yacht redefining the concept of enjoying life at sea. The elegance and style of Nautor Swan’s has been perfectly reinterpreted by Jarkko Jämsén, resident Swan Shadow designer, focusing on the main elements in the Finnish brand’s DNA: quality, innovation, performance and reliability.

The Swan OverShadow is based on the high-performing hull of the Swan Shadow, which is particularly efficient and seaworthy, and features an inboard engine and two alternative layout configurations upper and below deck.

The flush deck offers great livability with an external wet bar / galley, and an over 2-meter-long sunbed. A very generous dining area deploys around the sofas for a convivial vibe. The ample space on the deck has been made possible by positioning the sunbed more aft over the inboard engines. This also frees up the stern area, providing a more functional aft deck for the driver to maneuver, making the boat easier to handle.

The stern platform has the same functionality as in the Swan Shadow, with three positions: central position for driving, upper position serving as a passarelle, and below water level position for easier access to the water when swimming or doing watersports.

The brand-new Swan OverShadow features a high and wide windshield, offering more protection in the cockpit and ensuring more safety and comfort for the driver and co-pilot while cruising at higher speeds.

The full, closed bow of the design creates more space in front below deck, where OverShadow features two alternative layouts: a double or a twin bed configuration. The double offers more comfort when spending a weekend away, while the twin configuration offers more floor space, creating a seating area. Both layouts feature a larger and more spacious head than their predecessor.

This bold new megayacht concept is sure to ruffle a few feathers. The 450-footer is shaped just like a swan and even comes with a detachable head that can be used as a separate boat.

The gigantic sized bird goes by the name of Avanguardia , which means “vanguard” in English. Fitting since the megayacht is clearly at the forefront of marine design. The concept was penned by plucky Italian designer Pierpaolo Lazzarini of Lazzarini Design Studio . The Rome-based outfit has churned out a number of disruptive designs, from flying cars to a bullet-shaped hyperyacht , but this waterbird may make the biggest splash yet.

Avanguardia is replete with flowing lines and subtle curves that give her the elegant silhouette of a real-life swan. The gargantuan vessel is split into five separate decks and can fit up to 60 seafarers. Just like the animal, the “head” (a.k.a. the control tower) acts as a brain to maneuver the vessel. But it also doubles as a separate 50-foot cruiser that can carry out requisite day-time jaunts.

Lazzarini Design Studio

The control center is supported by a flexible “neck” that employs a fulcrum to give it a full range of movement. When swanning about, it drops to the middle of the megayacht to help steer it in the right direction. Conversely, when the vessel is at anchor, the neck lowers the head to the water where it detaches for independent cruising.

Toys come in the form of a helicopter on the top level, a pair of Lazzarini’s jet capsules that are located aft, and a haul of supercars which sit amidships, because why not? The jet capsules can also be added to the rear of the vessel for added propulsion.

Speaking of propulsion, the swan’s power would come in the form of twin electric side engines and a central MTU Rolls-Royce engine. Together, this setup could push the megayacht to a maximum cruising speed of about 18 knots.

While Avanguardia it just a concept at this stage, the design studio said that it could become a reality in the the future if a client is able to invest. Lido deck and the swan? We’d love to see that story hit the water.

It is also near other well-known landmarks in the city, such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the headquarters of the Philippine Navy, and the US Embassy. Facilities in the marina include a launching ramp and a fueling center, and the club itself is host to a restaurant and gorgeous function rooms. The Manila Yacht Club only welcomes visitors who arrive by boat, and it charges an initial security deposit of USD 750 upon arrival. Club membership is mandatory for medium and long-term mooring of boats.

Subic Bay Yacht Club, Zambales

The Subic Bay Yacht Club, which was founded in 1998, upholds itself as the country’s premier yacht club. It operates in the deepest bay in the country, and can host vessels well beyond 50 meters in length. Already benefitting from the innate beauty of the Zambales mountains surrounding it, the club hosts a number of other attractions, including its luxury accommodations, swimming pools, and its own movie theater, bowling alley, and nightclub. Those who venture outside of the club’s premises can also shop for well-priced imported goods at the Subic Freeport Zone, engage in water sports , or sign up for diving excursions.
