Hound: Refit included a larger rig

yacht hound

Back in the days when a fleet of J/24s raced regularly in Camden, there was this “nipper,” maybe 10 years old, named Dan Litchfield, who loved boats and racing and would do anything to get aboard. Some 30 years later, Litchfield now owns his own racer, the classic Aage Nielsen-designed, 59-footer Hound .

Built in 1970 by Abeking & Rasmussen, Hound had been a fixture for years on the Vinalhaven side of the Fox Island Thorofare when Litchfield bought it. He had some work done on the boat at New England Boatworks in Portsmouth, RI, including finagling a complex marriage between the classic Barient coffee-grinder pedestals and modern Harken multi-speed winches, along with a few other mechanical improvements. Litchfield raced the boat during the summer of 2021 with the goal of discovering any shortcomings and brainstorming for a speedier overall package, mostly involving a new rig and North 3di sails. Then that fall, he took Hound to Lyman-Morse’s yard in Thomaston for an extensive refit with supervision by the yacht’s captain Tom Stark of Middletown, RI, and design supervision from Jason Black. Black worked for Sparkman & Stephens at one time and had collaborated with Lyman-Morse on a previous project. The immediate goal was to get Hound ready to sail fast in the 2022 Bermuda Race.

Design improvements called for by Black included a taller carbon fiber mast, a longer boom so that the mainsheet would land in a more user/cruiser friendly place on deck (the existing boom had been shortened in an earlier refit), and the addition of a carbon fiber bowsprit to make the asymmetrical spinnakers and Code Zero more effective. The old-fashioned fore and aft lowers were to be eliminated, which required a single chain plate for a new D-1 shroud. That job, an integral tang for the bobstay at the bow, and an anchor for an inner forestay, made good use of the skilled welders at Lyman-Morse.

The single biggest change was increasing the size of Hound ’s rig. The old aluminum mast was heavy, Litchfield explained, and replacing it with a much lighter carbon fiber spar gave the boat enough additional stability to carry more sail area. The new spars and a new Jim Taylor-designed rudder were built by Moore Brothers in Bristol, RI.

“It’s a totally different boat now,” Litchfield said. “It’s super lively and the motion through the water is much improved.”

As part of the refit, Hound now has two bowsprits, one for racing and a shorter one for cruising. Switching them out takes about an hour, Litchfield said.

The list of additional projects in the Lyman-Morse refit included boxing in the new D-1 chainplate with attractive joiner work; adding a new teak and holly cabin sole throughout; fairing up the hull underbody; adding a full instrument package, navigational, tactical, and wind instruments; rebuilding the galley and main head; redoing all the interior lighting controls; building new interior doors; upgrading driveline, batteries, refrigeration, bilge pumps, hoses, and seacocks; and making sure all the safety equipment was up to date.

The weather for the Bermuda Race was fierce, and the race committee delayed some of the classes after a few early groups were knocked down in 30 knot gusts.  Nonetheless, Hound finished first in her class, and ninth overall in the 108-boat St. David’s Light division.

Since the Bermuda Race, Hound returned to Lyman-Morse for a new, Jim Taylor-designed keel that diminishes draft from 10 feet to just 8 1/2 feet, reduces her rating, and promises more speed.

Just Hound ’s third owner in 50 years, Litchfield is proud of the boat’s history and has taken care to reach out to relatives of the previous owners, as well as previous crew members, many of whom have sailed or raced with him on the boat.

He noted that recent improvements in electronics and construction materials make this a really good time to modernize a classic like Hound . “You can really make a dramatic difference.”

‘No One Will Know We Were There’

  • By Yachting Staff
  • Updated: December 10, 2013

Never let it be said that an old dog can’t be made new again.

Hound , a 60-foot Abeking & Rasmussen that launched in 1970, recently pulled into the Lyman-Morse yard in Maine to have her aluminum hull plates repaired. In order to get to the problem spots, the yard’s workers first had to remove all the salon furniture (tables, settees, bookshelves — everything). Then they removed 4-by-8-foot sections on both the port and starboard sides of the aluminum hull, replacing them with new plates.

“With surgeon-like precision,” the yard reports, “we faired them to the hull, then primed and painted the surface to a finish that no one will know we were there.” Hmmmm. Makes us wonder where else the guys at Lyman-Morse have been lately…

Hound is now heading back to the Caribbean for another season of cruising. Learn more about what the Lyman-Morse team is up to at www.lymanmorse.com.

HOUND,  a 59′  K. Aage Nielsen Sloop is a boat we know very well and have performed several refits on. Back in 2013, Lyman-Morse repaired aluminum plates on both the starboard and port sides of the hull. With surgeon-like precision, we removed the 4-by-8-foot sections and replaced them with new plates. “We faired them to the hull, then primed and painted the surface to a finish that no one will know we were there” says Lyman-Morse’s Service Manager at the time.

Most recently, in 2021-2022 Hound came back to the yard to undergo some performance upgrades. This included a keel replacement, metal work on her hull, hydraulic work, rigging work including a new mast, and more. This work proved to be worth while as HOUND made her way to the top of the podium in the 2023 RORC Caribbean 600 winning by 24 minutes on corrected time. Congratulations Hound!

Below is a great interview with Hound’s owner, Dan Litchfield following the successful race.

The 4th edition of the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s Caribbean 600 yacht race starts from Antigua on Monday, February 20. The 600nm course circumnavigates 11 Caribbean islands . There are 40 yachts competing and nearly a quarter of the fleet are yachts coming from the USA .

USA Entries in the Caribbean 600 yacht race include:

TEAM P2 – Perini Navi 38 – Gerhard Andlinger – Taking the Jaguar off-road with Team P2

The 38m (124ft) sailing yacht P2 by Perini Navi owned by businessman and philanthropist, Gerhard Andlinger, will make her debut into offshore racing with a star cast on board including Peter Holmberg, top Caribbean sailor, Finn Class Silver Olympic medallist and America’s Cup sailor. Other helmsman for the race include Maurice ‘Mo’ Kurg, also from St Thomas , US Virgin Islands and Paul Scoffin, ex-New Zealand America’s Cup sailor.

Peter Holmberg: “P2 is a Perini Navi/ Philippe Briand – design accustomed to fast cruising and serious day racing in the superyacht fleet,” said Peter Holmberg, “but the owner is intrigued with the adventure of the Caribbean 600 course and the challenge it presents. It will be a bit like taking a Jaguar off-road, so we will have to sail smart, and will hope to have a good result against similar type yachts.”

Team P2 Racing Manager and skipper, Jonathan Kline is looking forward to the challenge: “Having sailed with the owners of P2 for 10 years, a circumnavigation on Perseus and now three years of racing and cruising on P2, I am very excited that we will be sailing the Caribbean 600. The long distance course, the islands as marks and the drama of trade wind sailing in sunlight and moonlight will provide a memorable life experience for the boss. We know it will be rigorous, but out of the fatigue and effort we know we will find a sense of clarity and satisfaction.”

Rambler 90 was launched in 2002 as Shockwave before being renamed. HOUND, Nielsen 59 Custom, Frank Eberhart, (USA) – Family run and raced boat The 60-foot classic sailing yacht Hound, will be competing in the Caribbean 600 for the first time with a family crew of avid racers. Hound has competed in the last 8 Newport-Bermuda races, winning her class twice. Hound is a 1970 Nielson designed sloop owned by a family of avid sailors.

Over the years the owners have used the yacht to cross oceans with their four children, cruised the Baltic and competed in 8 Newport Bermuda Races. The Hound yacht is a regular of the Caribbean, having sailed the area for the past 25 winters. In the summer months Hound can be found sailing the coast of Maine and points north, enjoying the Canadian Maritimes and her homeport in Penobscot Bay, the Island of Vinalhaven. Hound is a family run and raced boat.

Frank Eberhart from Vinalhaven, Maine. New York: “Hound has been sailing the Caribbean for nearly 30 years. This race is a unique opportunity to enjoy Caribbean sailing with a twist, while experiencing the beauty of the Leeward chain. There will be only two hired crew onboard, the rest will be family and friends of the owner – all with offshore racing experience. This race promises to be a fun addition to the boats racing resume.”

Skipper, Nicholas Pucello from Marion, Massachusetts: “I’m hoping for a few days of great sailing in ideal Hound conditions, hopefully exceeding 200 mile days.”

HIGH TENSION – Mumm 36, BERNIE EVAN-WONG – Long road for local racer in his 4th Caribbean 600 race Bernie Evan-Wong has sailed and raced for over 50 years primarily in the Caribbean. Competing in virtually all of the regional regattas in a series of different boats, his Mumm 36 yacht High Tension is the smallest yacht in the fleet. Evan-Wong has taken part in every RORC Caribbean 600 race since it started, but not without incident:

“This is my 4th RORC Caribbean 600 race in this boat. We won our class in the first event, the wind died in the second and we lost our mast in the third event when in a leading position after 220 miles! I have just replaced the rig with some modifications to simplify the rig, moving mast aft and eliminating runners by using swept spreaders. It has been a long road to get to this point since last February, but we are back and will be out there giving it our best shot for the 2012 event.”

Bernie Evan-Wong’s most successful boat must be his Classic 1967 Cal 40 yacht Huey Too which he has owned for the past 34 years. In this time he has achieved Class wins at many of the Regional events including Antigua Sailing Week and St Maarten Heineken Regatta , also winning the top award for the ‘Most Worthy Performance’ of this event a few years ago.

For the Caribbean 600, crew include: Raoul Jean Noel who has represented Guadeloupe in many single handed transatlantic events, and is a National Sailing Coach; Mathieu and Gavin are both North Sails employees in Antigua and Guadeloupe and seasoned sailors; Gavin Dove being the son of Andrew Dove the Caribbean Regional North Sails Representative:

“Wayne is an experienced boat Captain in his own right, having once sailed single handed from Jamaica to Antigua, so is excellent at taking the 2-4 AM watch,” says Even-Wong.

Bernie Evan-Wong: Quote “The Caribbean 600 appeals because it is the first real regional ocean race and it’s a real fun event which takes an awful lot of logistical planning, but I really enjoy the challenge of putting it all together and then living the dream.”

Memorable Caribbean 600 moment: “One of the most memorable moments in the past three Caribbean 600 events for me must be planing down the waves at 12 – 15 knots on the south side of St Kitts at 2.00 AM when a school of dolphins started swimming with the boat in a phosphorescent sea! An unforgettable moment. Sailing a race like this helps me get through the rest of the year.”

Worst moment in Caribbean 600: “At the other end of the spectrum must be my worst moment in the first race when I fell on board on the second night out, I broke two ribs, but with help from my crew, we still went on to win our class in that event and for a while had the big boats worrying that we might win overall! Over the past three events we have gained a lot of valuable experience on the course, so we plan to apply that knowledge hopefully to our benefit.”

NORTHERN CHILD, SWAN 51, Christian Reynolds – Rookie Crew up for the challenge

Northern Child has been a charter yacht since 2001, completing the Atlantic circuit every year. 12 inexperienced racers on board the Swan 51 yacht will be led by pro skipper, Christian Reynolds.

Reynolds comments: “The RORC 600 is my favourite offshore race above the Rolex Fastnet. There are lots of different legs creating varied and exciting sailing in warm beautiful water around a very scenic race course. We hope to achieve first in class.”

Forty years of yacht design

' data-srcset=

This photo from the yard at Maine Yacht Center in Portland is a fascinating study in the evolution of yacht design (see larger image below). On the right is Hound , a 60-foot aluminum sloop designed by Aage Nielsen and built by Abeking & Rasmussen in 1970. On the left is the Class 40 Picoty , a POGO 40 S2 designed by Groupe Finot. Forty years of design evolution have produced two sailing vessels with somewhat noticable differences in form, performance and accomodations. Admittedly, Picoty is a pure race boat while Hound is a cruising vessel. Even given that, however, a side-by-side comparison like this is a vivid visual indicator of change. Which boat would you rather sail from, say, Newport to Bermuda or San Francisco to Honolulu? Add your comment below.

Picoty is one of six Class 40 boats that competed in the Solidaire du Chocolate Race from Nantes/St. Nazaire, France to Mexico, then competed in the Atlantic Cup from Charleston to Newport and came to Maine Yacht Center for overhaul prior to departing for Quebec City to race in the Quebec/St. Malo Race back to France — a bracing circle of the Atlantic. Picoty's skipper/owner is Jacques Fournier , who retired from a 30-year professional life to pursue his dream of ocean racing.

Hudson River Ice Yachting with HOUND

“We have seen the best ice on the Hudson in ten years.” ~ Glen Burger of the Hudson River Ice Yacht Club

With the flourish of ice yachting we have noticed in the past few months, Shoreline caught up with Glen Burger of the Hudson River Ice Yacht Club to find out about his activities on his gaff-rigged ice yacht the HOUND. HRIYC is dedicated to preserving and sailing the historic gaff rigged ice yachts of New York’s Hudson River valley.

Glen writes: “My father got involved with the Hudson River Ice Yacht Club in the late 1960’s. He and a friend acquired the ice yacht HOUND in 1969 from the Hull Estate in Staatsburg, New York. They began to fix her up, but responsibilities of life and family put the project on hold until 1990 when I graduated from college. After graduation I worked on the boat, and we started actively sailing while we continued to restore her. Today, HOUND is fully restored, and we sail her as much a we can.”

Hound me and my father

Glen with his dad Emerson on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire.

HOUND likely sailed the Hudson in the early 1900s.  She is a good example of  the later design period (post 1883) in which the mast is stepped forward of the runner plank and wire rigging is used.  This created a lighter, more balanced boat that didn’t spin out as easily as the earlier designs. ~Brian Reid’s web page White Wings and Black Ice

“This year was a better season locally here in the Hudson Valley than we have had in the past 10 years. We put out boats on the Hudson River – which does not happen every year. Snow can be an issue and it has been this season. We got a couple of days of sailing on the river and then the ice got buried in a lot of snow which stopped the sailing for a couple of weeks. Every season is different and you never know when all the variables will come together and allow you to sail. You have to be ready to take advantage of it when it happens. I enjoy the looking and the scouting of the ice. It gets me outside and keeps me active during the coldest time of the year. I have other modern boats which I enjoy but I like the feel of the larger gaff rigged Hudson river ice yachts the best.”

Video from Glen’s YouTube channel “Sailing a very large sheet of ice on the Hudson River February 26, 2014”

Hound is joined by the fleet of gaff-rigged ice yachts Puff, Cyclone, Flicker, North Wind, Boreas, Vixen, Orion, Floater. Find pictures and information at:

mound of the hound

editor

There is a boat in San Diego that I absolutely cannot fucking stand, and I am not alone in this. It is Staghound, the R/P 50 that despite years of mostly being poorly sailed with second-tier sails, has won a lot primarily due to the fact that the boat is quick, but has also been handed embarrassingly gifted PHRF ratings as well.

People have complained about it for years, but PHRF San Diego didn’t do anything until the boat added a fat top main, longer sprit, and new rudder, but even then it was a gift (-3 seconds a mile if I remember correctly).

After a number of competitors bitched, it was brought up for a rating review about a year ago.  This rating review included some ORR data from a test certificate in an old and slower configuration.  Even with this data, the boat got an additional knock (I think 9 seconds) which they sailed with and continued winning,

Based on the original review, PHRF worked with a yacht designer and came up with a VPP spreadsheet to remeasure using both measured VPP and PHRF numbers and requested all PHRF negative rated boats get ORR measured (almost all already were) and rated, so that there was measurement data (and ratings) that could establish something more concrete than the bellyaching.

So guess who refused to get measured after 6 months of asking? You got it. And of course the reasons are obvious, especially from people who don’t want a fair fight.  They still wouldn’t comply, so PHRF hit them -6 as a blanket penalty for refusing to get measured to get the rating a bit closer to reality.  This penalty would be dropped as soon as they turned in a measurement certificate.

So what was their response? They asked for a refund from PHRF San Diego, pulled their already issued San Diego PHRF Certificate, and then entered the San Diego based Cabrillo series (first race of the year) using their SoCal PHRF cert which gives them another 15 seconds a mile advantage, as So Cal PHRF never gave them the 9-second knock that they took last year or the temporary  120 day -6 knock for refusing to get measured which is just the San Diego rating.

It is worth noting that Chuck Skewes, the sails salesman from Ullman Sails, who represented Staghound at the SD PHRF meeting, agreed to accept the 6 sec knock until they turned in their measured cert then went and did this anyway.  Funny, circumventing standard procedures and pissing off a fleet of larger boats and their owners who buy big, expensive sails doesn’t seem like a good way to attract customers to me…

I think they blatantly subverted the system, by using the outdated and inaccurate -48 rating instead of the more accurate and recent SD PHRF issued. -63.  We’re not sure it’s actual cheating, but it is a chickenshit move that in no way meats the spirit of fair racing.  This boat is widely despised not only because of their continual rating fuckery, but because they strut around like they are the shit.  It’s a fucking joke.

This is truly unsportsmanlike and not surprising for this group’s truly blatant FU to PHRF and all their competitors. IMO, PHRF SD should refuse to issue them a certificate going forward.  I mean, if their SD cert wasn’t good enough for this, why should it be good enough going forward? Fuck these guys. Almost all PHRF races here require each boat to have an SD cert.

Perhaps for this series, everyone in their class should race in the ORR division and let them have their PHRF pickle dish by themselves.  If they are willing to sell their soul (assuming there is one) for a trophy, then let them have it. – ed .

Restaurant-Yacht Chaika

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. More

Hello, Alexander Your comment is extremely important for us, thank you a lot for it. We are terribly sorry for your time that you`ve spent waiting your order and we have already taken actions to improve quality of our service and it would be realy... More

Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Good afternoon! Thank you for your detailed feedback! We are looking forward to seeing you again, we are sure that you will be delighted with our dishes!

I've been here several times during two business trip in Moscow. The overall quality for both service and food is absolutely top-notch, plus the location is very unique.

Hello! Thank you for your feedback! We are looking forward to visiting again!

Located on a boat at Krasnopresenskaya River Bank this 5 Star Restaurant transforms into a party location due to multiple groups hosting events. Impressive wine selection, Asian and European kitchen...

Thx a lot! We are waiting for you!

It is a nice place to gather specially at the lounge The service and staff very good I like the river view The food is almost like all restaurants in Russia they serve different cuisine. Staring Russian appetizer till Asian dishes Presentation and taste amazing... I consider it overpriced little bit More

Good location. Nice views. Good choice of food and drinks. European and Asian menu. Nice service. Pricey enough.

Had a large group dinner here. Food was above average and service quite good. The real attraction is the view of Moscow from the river on a nice night. Great place for a larger group dinner. More
