I know there are owners on this website. I have a US 27 in Texas. Anyone else out there?

usyacht 25 Yes, another usyacht. I sail the upper Chesapeake Bay. Brian______/)_____

US Yacht 25 I've owned a 1982 US Yacht 25 for the past 14 years and sail Long Island Sound.

I have a US25 for the past 3 years, great boat, no complaints so far. I'm up in Vancouver.

us yacht 27

Used to have a 1980 US 29 It was bought new in Orillia Ontario, and sailed on Lake Superior and Georgian Bay by my family for many seasons. We sold it in the early 90's when our family moved away from a major body of water. The boat sailed terrifically, and was asthetically pleasing. There were some structural issues due to it's light construction however.

Light construction? Really? We had a 1981 US 27, and that beast was a pig in the water, tough as nails and heavy as all get out! it wasn't happy unless there were 30 knot winds or more! To this day I prefer racer/cruisers because that boat was so slow in the water. Granted it had a 13hp Volvo diesel, wheel, and fixed prop (probably the slow portion of this equation)... but darn, last thing I'd call it was light.

I can't speak for the Bayliner Buccaneer version from the same molds, but the US Yacht boats were laid up heavy. Mine had no blisters at all after years with no bottom job. Schnool is right, very heavy for their size.

I guess the links don't come out right if done on an Android tablet. Here you go....

I've got a 1981 US27 and I love the way it handles. We're refurbishing the interior, tidying up the teak, and generally bringing it back to it's glory. This one never had an inboard, outboard only. Considering the year that's probably a good thing. It's really easy and simple to just pop a new outboard on the back of her. I agree, it seems to be a well-built solid boat that I've been really happy with. I can't speak for any of the other boats in the US line, but this one is ridiculously fun to sail. It's a good boat to set up for single-handing as well and tolerates high winds with surprising comfort.

us yacht 27

.....had mine out this past Saturday... heading out again Thursday! Gotta love NC in February!

Just picked up a US 25 myself. Got a swingin deal, but it needs a fair amount of work, wires are hanging here and there, interior has been partially remodeled but needs finishing. Just what I wanted! now I can do it my way.

If any of you wind up with "181" which I really think was the wrong hull number, but I'll ask anyway, if any of you comes across a US 27, wheel steering, inboard diesel with sails with 181 on them... please let me know. The boat had a 110 hank, and a 170 yellow and orange hank on genoa.

grnrngr: I spent about 8 hours last weekend cleaning and doing some work on the US27... I have some plans to redo all the lighting with LED rope on a dimmer, etc. Have fun sprucing up the US25!

I plan on changing my lights to LEDs but hadn't thought about the rope type, that brings up some interesting options. Thanks!

Yeah, the rope lights can be tucked up under areas to allow an almost recessed lighting feel. Plus being waterproof moisture damage/maintenance is less of a concern. You can get them in 12V, which makes wiring a bit simpler (depending on what you've got going on in your boat). I plan on a strip of them on each side of the cabin underneath the wooden strip that is the bottom support for curtains over the ports (of which I pulled the curtains down long ago!). So the lights will just be tucked away nicely. A friend that lives part of the year on his sailboat in New England recommended putting a strip of red LED rope lights one on side or the other for maintaining decent vision at night. I'm not sure though because if I put the white ones on a dimmer I should be able to modulate the brightness easily enough... plus, not living on the boat like him, I don't really know how practical it would be to do so. But it's an interesting idea. I also plan on finding a nice way to line the outline of the V-berth with LED rope as well. It's a tricky area to light, so hopefully the rope will allow some more options.

Even with a dimmer, white light adversely affects night vision. If you sail at night at all, I'd go with some red lights below as well. You'll notice, most gauges and compasses that have back lights for sailing/motoring at night, will be red, sometimes green, but should never be white. My boat is open on both sides from under the cabin/cockpit half bulkhead back to the transom. I'm currently thinking about mounting my water tank (when I get one) centered under the cockpit in there and closing off the area directly under the lazarette, lighting back there would be great! Only problem I'm seeing is having 10 different light switches on my electric panel [emoji1]

The old lighting in mine was a strange mix of small fluorescent, crappy tap-light looking things with night light bulbs, and mid-sized reading lights attached to a couple walls... all with their own switches directly on them. I'm enjoying taking them all out and will certainly like having better lighting with centralized controls. Sounds like your US25 has a fair amount of work to do! But like you said, you'll be able to make it how you like. I think the largest project I have on mine is replacing the wooden floor, which is already a replacement and they used a laminate that is apparently NOT made for wet environments. I've been batting some ideas around that are durable, easy, look decent, but won't break the bank. I'll certainly take a look at running a strip of red while I'm doing the wiring/install and making a separate switch... while I'm at it, as they say.

Update! Got my fridge, stove, and microwave all mounted and curtains hung, moved my batteries from the stbd qtr berth to the center of the boat under the cockpit, hung a closet rod over the portapotty, replaced the main breaker and repositioned my AC panel, swapped all the incandescent bulbs in the stock cabin lights with LED panels (Very bright!!), stuck a buncha cup hooks here and there for hanging this and that, and mounted a couple battery operated "tap lights" that had been sitting around the house for years. Patched a leak in my Avon and got a motor mount for it, as soon as I mount my sink and water tank and get a motor, I'll have it all!! Keepin it cheap, my curtains were $2 at the dollar store, got the 5 LED panels off eBay for $10.

I know this is an old thread... but the comments about US 27s being "heavy" just ain't the case. The Cat27 is 1000 lbs more than the US 27. A search for 27 footers on saiboatdata.com will yield many more examples.

Build quality though is a totally different discussion... I will state again, if someone has the hull number that ends 181 (which is likely hull 1, from 1981) reach out to me here, I may be willing to make you a helluva deal.. Would be inboard wheel steering model.

1980 US Yachts 22 owner. Have ours in the water at Scappoose Bay Marina near Saint Helens, OR. Need to haul out soon to do the bottom and some other maintenance. Sail with the Genoa only most of the time. I need to get a longer halyard installed for the main so I can run it back to the cockpit for easier single handed operation. With small deck area near the mast, it can get a little tricky raising and lowering the main in decent winds by ones self. We have a 9.9 Mercury 2-Stroke outboard installed...….a wise choice!

WHY FIRST 27 ?

us yacht 27

MODERN & FAST

A light vacuum-infused hull, a modern design and a deep low-center-of-gravity keel make the First 27 significantly faster, delivering stable and safe planing sailing to anyone who sails her.

Very high stability due to an unsinkable hull combined with three unsinkable chambers, a crash-box, an inboard engine, and balanced twin rudders for complete control make safety one of her strongest points.

UNDER CONTROL

Carefully thought-out cockpit ergonomics, minimized and simplified deck controls, double winches, and a perfectly balanced steering system assure easy handling in single-handed, double-handed or fully-crewed setups.

A reliable 15 HP inboard engine coupled with simple linear shaft drive and foldable propeller guarantees high cruising speeds, ease of use and low maintenance.

Even with a fixed keel, the First 27 is a fully trailerable boat offering you a new level of freedom. You can easily discover distant shores without long sea deliveries, save on marina costs, and store your boat in your backyard during the off season.

SAILING EXPERIENCE

The main promise of the First 27 is her performance and unique sailing experience. Again and again, she will surprise you by getting to plane with as little as 12 knots of wind. Her stability comes from her wide, flat hull on the waterline and a lead T-bulb keel, and her easy handling comes from her carefully thought-out design and cockpit ergonomics. Increased bow volume, accompanied by a balanced twin-rudder steering system, keeps you in complete control, whether you are sailing upwind or safely planing downwind. The excitement of her lively planing and easy handling will become your afternoon sailing routine on the First 27!

us yacht 27

LIVING ONBOARD

On top of matching the speeds of most racing boats, she also offers a surprising level of comfort. The clean and minimalistic light-weight interior offers all essential amenities for onboard living. She is designed to sleep up to 6 adults, 2 in the bow cabin and up to 4 in a very bright and openly-spaced salon, and is also equipped with a removable table and fridge. At the midpoint, you'll find a galley with a gas burner and a sink with fresh water. Thanks to innovative, foldable magnetic doors, the midpoint can also be converted into a proper marine toilet with a black water tank or used as a front cabin extension. A large and open cockpit welcomes you with comfortable benches, a removable indoor/outdoor table and a swim ladder with a shower on the stern.

  • This wild creation by BMW Designworks was unveiled at last year’s Cannes Film Festival.
  • The cabin is equipped with futuristic furniture pieces and a 32-inch 6K touchscreen.
  • Power comes courtesy of six 40 kWh battery packs from the BMW i3.

In some ways, The Icon, a futuristic boat from German manufacturer Tyde that was designed by BMW group subsidiary Designworks, is a bit like the Tesla Cybertruck. Just as the latter threw out the rule book for conventional pickup trucks, The Icon is vastly different from any other luxury yacht and serves as the first battery-powered boat of its kind.

Unveiled at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, this creation wouldn’t look out of place on a James Bond film set. The 43-foot yacht boasts a flat trimaran-style hull with a prism-like layout and incorporates hydrofoils, allowing it to hover above the water and generate minimal waves or wakes.

Almost the entire exterior of the boat is clad in glass, offering an exceptionally airy and light ambiance for passengers, albeit compromising on privacy. While only one example has been produced, it is fully functional and ready for a new home as it goes up for auction.

As mentioned, Tyde’s latest marvel is electric, powered by six 40kWh battery packs borrowed from the BMW i3. These batteries supply energy to a pair of 100 kW (134 hp) electric motors, propelling the yacht to a top speed of 27 knots (31 mph / 50 km/h). At a cruising speed of 24 knots (28 mph / 44 km/h), The Icon can cover over 50 nautical miles (93 km).

A High-Tech BMW Cabin

Own The Icon, A Futuristic Electric Yacht By BMW Fit For A Bond Villain

The boat’s cabin is equally unique and futuristic, adorned with avant-garde furniture and a large yoke steering wheel.  Divided into two lounge areas with a BMW-designed helm station, it features rotating helm seats that enable the space to function either as part of the social area or independently. Each furniture piece is crafted from grainy metal, reflecting sunlight around the cabin like waves on the water.

Crafted by BMW Designworks, the vessel also includes a massive 32-inch 6K touchscreen display at the helm station’s center. It has been designed to look and feel like the BMW iDrive operating system, with voice control also integrated into the system.

Additionally, BMW has installed a Dolby Atmos sound system and enlisted world-famous musician and Oscar winner Hans Zimmer to compose artificial engine sounds for added ambiance.

For those interested, the BMW Designworks boat is currently up for auction at SBX Cars. You can check it out here .

Three men, a woman and a child reported dead with vessel said to have been carrying more than 110 people

Five people, including a child, have died in an attempt to cross the Channel in a small boat near the town of Wimereux, south of Calais, French authorities say.

More than 110 people were said to have been on board the vessel when it left at 5am near the Plage des Allemands.

The Calais prefect, Jacques Billant, told the Guardian that despite the deaths, 57 people had continued their journey to Britain once the boat’s motor had been restarted.

A provisional assessment reported five deaths, of three men, a woman, and a child reportedly aged between four and seven, and one person slightly injured.

Billant said a rescue operation had been dispatched quickly to the boat in difficulty, and rescuers saw six people “in great difficulty” or inanimate on the boat. They were immediately rescued and taken to shore for treatment by emergency services but “despite attempts to reanimate them, five of them died”, he said.

A further 47 people were rescued from the vessel and were helped by police, emergency services and doctors in Boulogne-sur-Mer. Four were admitted to hospital for treatment.

Billant said that “despite this complex and delicate situation”, 57 people on the dinghy did not want to leave the boat. They managed to get the motor running and continued to Britain, under the surveillance of French authorities.

The French association Osmose 62, which helps asylum seekers and refugees in northern France, was present in Wimereux. Dany Patoux, a volunteer, told France 3 regional television that he had been there when some of the people on the failed crossing made it back to shore.

He said he had seen the father of the child who died. “We knew the little girl well. We have photos with her, where she has a big smile in the hope of a better life. But now it’s all ruined. Her father fell into our arms just now. He is in tears, he is in a terrible state. He saw his daughter die before his eyes.”

The deaths come hours after Rishi Sunak’s government passed legislation to allow it to deport asylum seekers who arrive in the UK on small boats to Rwanda. Sunak said the “tragic” reports of deaths in the Channel showed why the Rwanda plan was needed.

“It’s just a reminder of why my plan is so important because there’s a certain element of compassion about everything that we’re doing,” he told reporters. “We want to prevent people making these very dangerous crossings. If you look at what’s happening, criminal gangs are exploiting vulnerable people.

“They are packing more and more people into these unseaworthy dinghies; you’ve seen an enormous increase in the numbers over the past few years. This is what tragically happens when they push people out to sea and that’s why, for matters of compassion more than anything else, we must actually break this business model.”

More than 6,000 people have made the journey so far this year – an increase of about a quarter on the same period last year.

Matthew Rycroft, the most senior civil servant in the Home Office, who has overseen the Rwanda scheme for two years, previously told MPs he did not have evidence to show it would have a deterrent effect that would make it value for money.

The deal will cost £1.8m for each of the first 300 deportees, the National Audit Office has confirmed.

The Channel is one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes and currents are strong, making the crossing on small boats dangerous. People smugglers typically overload rickety dinghies, often leaving them barely afloat as they try to reach British shores.

The Refugee Council in the UK described the deaths as “devastating” and “all the more tragic” coming just hours after the Rwanda bill was passed.

Enver Solomon, the council’s chief executive, said: “It is shocking to learn of the terrible loss of yet more lives in the Channel this morning. Our thoughts go out to the families and loved ones of those affected. This is another devastating human tragedy that could and should have been avoided, and for it to happen just hours after the government’s Rwanda bill became law makes it all the more tragic.

“The only sustainable way to reduce dangerous journeys … is for the government to reduce the need for desperate people to take desperate actions. Instead of hostile, headline-grabbing legislation, we need to see safe routes for those fleeing conflict and persecution, including more options for family reunion, refugee visas, and cooperation with our European neighbours.”
