Russian oligarch stashes second yacht in Turkey, apparently to beat Ukraine-linked sanctions

March 22, 2022 / 7:55 AM EDT / CBS/AP

Ankara, Turkey — A second superyacht belonging to Chelsea soccer club owner and sanctioned Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich has docked in a resort in southwestern Turkey - a country that's not applying sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine , Turkish media reports said Tuesday.

The private DHA news agency said the Bermuda-registered Eclipse docked at a port in the resort of Marmaris amid international efforts to freeze assets belonging to top Russian businessmen linked to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A day earlier, Abramovich's Bermuda-flagged luxury yacht My Solaris arrived in the nearby resort of Bodrum, triggering a protest by a group of Ukrainians who boarded a small motor boat and tried to prevent the yacht from docking.

Last week, the European Union updated a list of individuals facing asset freezes and travel bans over their ties to the Kremlin and began imposing sanctions on Abramovich. The 55-year-old had already been punished in Britain.

TURKEY-RUSSIA-UKRAINE-CONFLICT

NATO-member Turkey has close ties to both Russia and Ukraine. It has criticized Moscow's invasion of Ukraine but has also positioned itself as a neutral party trying to mediate between the two.

Abramovich announced earlier this month that he's selling the Chelsea club. Abramovich said the sale won't "be fast-tracked but will follow due process" and that the net proceeds will go to victims in Ukraine.

"This has never been about business nor money for me, but about pure passion for the game and Club," he said.

Forbes has valued Abramovich's net worth  at $12.4 billion  while Chelsea was worth an  estimated $3.2 billion  in 2021. The 55-year-old, who was once Russia's richest man, said he will set up a foundation to which net proceeds from the sale will be donated.

Solaris superyacht in Bodrum

Roman Abramovich’s superyacht leaves Turkish port run by UK-listed firm

Russian oligarch’s vessel departed after Global Ports Holding was pressed to act over UK sanctions

Roman Abramovich’s $600m (£458m) superyacht Solaris has left a port in Turkey after the London-based company that operates the terminal which had been harbouring the oligarch’s yacht was pressed to act.

Solaris, which is 140 metres long and has a helipad and swimming pool, left Bodrum Cruise Port on Monday. It is now at anchor off Yalikavak beach in south-western Turkey, according to the shipping data service Marine Traffic .

Pressure had been building for Global Ports Holding (GPH), the Mayfair-headquartered company that runs Bodrum Cruise Port, to refuse services to Solaris.

Legal experts had said the London-listed company was taking “a very big risk” by allowing a superyacht owned by a sanctioned individual to use one of its ports. The Bodrum port is one of 22 terminals run by the firm.

Abramovich, the owner of Chelsea Football Club, is one of several Russian billionaires hit by UK sanctions last month as part of the government’s efforts to put pressure on Vladimir Putin to end the invasion of Ukraine. Liz Truss, the foreign secretary, described the sanctioned individuals as having “the blood of the Ukrainian people on their hands”.

A spokesperson for Global Ports Holding declined to comment on why Solaris had left the port.

In a statement on Sunday, the company said it did not have “any power to accept or reject any ship or yacht” from the port but it had taken the decision to “not receive any service fee or other payments concerning the berthing of this superyacht”.

“Global Ports Holding plc notes recent press speculation regarding the berthing at Bodrum Yolcu Liman İşletmeleri AŞ (Bodrum Cruise Port), Turkey, of a superyacht, allegedly owned by a designated person subject to sanctions imposed by the UK government,” GPH said .

“As a private terminal operator in Turkey , GPH merely operates Bodrum Cruise Port as the concessionaire and is not involved in granting permission for a ship or a yacht to dock at the port. This responsibility and decision sit with the Turkish authorities, and as concessionaire, GPH must comply with such a decision as long as the decision is legal under the applicable laws.

“However, and notwithstanding the difficulties of any party to correctly identify the actual ownership of such assets, GPH has not and will not receive any service fee or other payments concerning the berthing of this superyacht at Bodrum Cruise Port.”

The company said the berthing of Solaris did not breach UK sanction laws because “the alleged offence has taken place at a port outside the United Kingdom where GPH does not have any ownership or any power to accept or reject any ship or yacht pursuant to the applicable laws”.

Solaris arrived at Bodrum Cruise Port on 22 March after hurriedly leaving a port in Barcelona , where it was undergoing repairs, as EU countries began seizing sanctioned individuals’ assets.

Ukrainian protesters tried to stop Solaris mooring at the port. Members of the Optimist Sailing Team Ukraine confronted the vessel in a small boat, chanting “No war in Ukraine” and waving the country’s flag. They were part of a junior sailing team that was in Turkey to compete in an annual competition, having left Ukraine before the invasion.

Turkey has refused to impose sanctions on Russians, despite the UK, US and EU uniting to restrict oligarchs believed to have benefited from close relationships with Putin. The Turkish foreign minister, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, said the oligarchs were “of course” welcome and could do business in Turkey according to international law.

Another, even larger, superyacht owned by Abramovich is moored in Turkey. Eclipse, which at 162.5 metres is believed to be the world’s second largest superyacht, arrived at the port of Marmaris on 22 March.

Reports suggest that Abramovich owns as many as five superyachts worth more than $1bn (£762m) in total. Another yacht linked to the billionaire, Garcon, is now berthed in Antigua.

The Antiguan government has asked for the UK’s assistance to seize the vessel. Ronald Sanders, the country’s ambassador to the US, told Reuters: “We’ve said that we’re quite happy to cooperate, but under the rule of law. The only way we can [seize the vessel] is if the British, in their mutual legal assistance treaty request, establish that this is a person they want because he has committed some crime.”

Live updates: follow the latest news on Russia-Ukraine

Several luxury yachts owned by wealthy Russians have been detained across Europe this month.

It comes after the West imposed sanctions on oligarchs over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine .

Some have taken evasive action – two such superyachts linked to billionaire Roman Abramovich were spotted approaching the Turkish coast on Tuesday. A group of Ukrainians tried to stop one of the yachts from docking in Turkey.

Chelsea FC owner Mr Abramovich is one of several oligarchs who were added to an EU blacklist last week as governments acted to seize yachts and other luxury assets owned by the billionaires.

Western sanctions resulted in many large vessels relocating from Europe in the past few weeks. Several have headed to places such as the Maldives, which have no extradition treaty with the US.

Where is the Abramovich-owned yacht heading?

Mr Abramovich's yacht Eclipse was seen heading towards Marmaris on Tuesday, according to data compiled by monitoring site Marine Traffic, which was seen by Reuters.

The previous day, his superyacht Solaris was moored in Bodrum, about 80 kilometres from Marmaris, data showed, after skirting waters of EU countries.

There was no suggestion Mr Abramovich was on board either of the yachts.

Which yachts have been detained?

On Monday, a superyacht linked to another Russian billionaire was detained by authorities after docking in Gibraltar.

The Axioma , believed to belong to Dmitrievich Pumpyansky, moored at Gibraltar on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, Reuters TV footage showed.

Mr Pumpyansky, who is under UK and EU sanctions, owns Russia's largest steel pipe maker TMK. Data shows the 72-metre vessel is owned by a British Virgin Islands holding company called Pyrene investments, Reuters reported. An article published as part of the Panama Papers leaks names Mr Pumpyansky as a beneficiary of the holding.

On March 12, the world's biggest sailing yacht, called Sailing Yacht A and owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko , was seized by Italian police.

Several other luxury yachts have also been detained across Europe, including in Gibraltar, Mallorca in Spain's Balearic Islands and the French coast.

Here are 16 superyachts linked to wealthy Russians

1. Eclipse , a superyacht linked to sanctioned Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich , was this week spotted heading in the direction of Marmaris in Turkey.

2. Solaris , belonging to Mr Abramovich , moored in Bodrum at the start of the week.

3. The Axioma superyacht, belonging to Russian oligarch Dmitrievich Pumpyansky , who is on the EU's list of sanctioned Russians, was detained by authorities after docking in Gibraltar on Monday.

4. The Crescent , which was seized by the Spanish government in Tarragona, Spain, on March 17. The ship's owner is not publicly known, although it is believed to belong to Russian Igor Sechin, head of Rosneft Oil in Moscow.

5. Ragnar , owned by former KGB officer and Russian oligarch Vladimir Strzhalkovsky, who is not on the EU sanctions list.

6. Tango , owned by Russian billionaire Viktor Vekselberg, who was sanctioned by the US on March 11.

7. Lady Anastasia , owned by Russian arms manufacturer Alexander Mijeev, is retained at Port Adriano, Mallorca, as a result of sanctions against Russia and Belarus issued by the European Union.

8. Valerie was seized by the Spanish government in Barcelona, Spain, on March 15. Spanish newspaper El Pais reported that the ship is linked to Rostec State Corporation’s chief executive Sergey Chemezov.

9. The $578 million Sailing Yacht A owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko was seized by Italian police in the port of Trieste on March 12.

10. The 156-metre Dilbar superyacht is owned by Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov.

11. La Datcha belongs to Russian billionaire businessman Oleg Tinkov.

12. Lady M , owned by Russian oligarch Alexei Mordashov, was seized by Italian police on March 5.

13. Amore Vero was seized in the Mediterranean resort of La Ciotat on March 3 by French authorities. The yacht is linked to Igor Sechin, a Putin ally who runs the Russian oil giant Rosneft.

14. Quantum Blue , owned by a company linked to Russian billionaire Sergei Galitsky, the head of Russian oil giant Rosneft, was seized in southern France on March 3.

15. Superyacht Luna is owned by Russian billionaire Farkhad Akhmedov.

16. Triple Seven is owned by Russian billionaire Alexander Abramov, according to media reports. The yacht was last up for sale in 2020 for €38 million ($41.85 million).

  • Leonid Mikhelson's yacht only sent its destination after reaching Turkey's safe waters, data shows.
  • Many superyachts owned by oligarchs are now in Turkey, which does not recognize western sanctions.

Insider Today

A $150 million superyacht belonging to Russia's second-richest man has finally been located after it stopped broadcasting a tracking signals for weeks, ship-tracking data shows.

Bloomberg first reported the story.

The superyacht called Pacific, owned by Novatek CEO and oligarch Leonid Mikhelson, moored on Thursday in Turkey's safe waters at the port of Marmaris in the country's south, Spire's data shows .

The 280ft (86 metre) yacht turned off its tracking signals from early May where it was last tracked in the Caribbean Sea. Its marker had pinpointed the yacht on May 20 near the Canary Islands, off the west coast of Africa.

Mikhelson, worth $21.5 billion per Forbes data , is a business partner of sanctioned oligarch Gennady Timchenko, whose family including his wife and daughters have also been hit by sanctions.

Mikhelson was sanctioned by the UK and Canada in early April.

Turkey has been a favored destination for oligarchs' superyachts following the imposition of sanctions by the West. Roman Abramovich's superyachts The Eclipse and My Solaris are both in Turkish waters.

According to SuperyachtFan , the yacht can accommodate two helicopters, features an elevator, a pool, a smaller speedboat, and has room for 12 guests and 28 crew.

Novatek is the largest privately owned natural gas provider in Russia, according to Bloomberg, accounting for about 10% of consumption.

Insider contacted Novatek for comment.

The US and its allies launched a campaign against Russian tycoons with ties to Vladimir Putin by seizing superyachts, villas, and other assets.

However, legal challenges have risen in Fiji, where the US granted a seizure order of the $325 million Amadea that  belongs to Suleiman Kerimov. A Russian billionaire had acted as a "straw owner" to conceal its ownership, US authorities have alleged.

Vagit Alekperov's $80 million superyacht, Galactica Super Nova, also stopped sending tracking signals after leaving Montenegro in early March after sanctions were imposed.

Other vessels belonging to oligarchs have sailed toward Turkey, including Dmitry Kamenshchik's $400 million superyacht , and Alexander Abramov's $100 million yacht .

Ukrainian children were seen on an inflatable dinghy waving flags emblazoned with 'No War' as they attempted to stop Roman Abramovich's £750m superyacht from docking in sanction-free Turkey

The Chelsea FC owner's second luxury superyacht has arrived in Turkey in the latest move by the under-fire oligarch to protect his prize assets from Western sanctions over Russia 's war in Ukraine.

A group of 10 Ukrainian protesters, including five children, in a motor boat flying a Ukraine flag saying ‘No War’ tried in vain to stop the Solaris docking by sailing in front of it, but were held back by police.

The Turkish-based Association of Ukrainians in Bodrum group said it was 'successful' until the coastguard intervened.

It claims its 'brave sportsmen' were taken ashore, given 'a round of tasty Turkish tea with delights and a warning' and released.

'They were demanding immediate stop of Russian invasion to Ukraine and to end Russian vile war,' the group added on Facebook.

Abramovich’s yacht, the 460ft Solaris, docked in Bodrum about 40 miles away from his other yacht which arrived 16 hours later after at 6am UK time today.

His 533ft long Eclipse - worth an estimated £750m - docked this morning in Marmaris which is popular with British holidaymakers and is in the heart of the idyllic Turkish Riviera.

The arrival of both yachts in Turkey means they are safe - for now at least - from sanctions designed to punish Putin's inner circle for his decision to invade Ukraine.

Efforts to capture assets linked to oligarchs has been described as a ‘cat and mouse’ game as crews seek to avoid having them seized.

NATO member Turkey is a safe haven for the Chelsea FC owner’s yachts and other assets as the country has not joined nations such as the US, UK, France, Spain and Germany in sanctioning those closest to Putin.

The Eclipse usually spends much of the winter in the Caribbean where Abramovich has a 70 acre beachside estate on the billionaire playground island of St Barts.

But it left St Maarten, around 20 miles from St Barts, on February 21 as Putin gathered his forces to invade Ukraine. It went through the Straits of Gibraltar nine-days-ago – just two miles outside British territorial waters – and studiously avoided the waters of EU countries as it continued sailing east.

The Solaris had been undergoing repairs in Barcelona, but left hurriedly on March 8 as EU countries began seizing assets. It arrived four days later in the port of Tivat in Montenegro which is not in the bloc.

Montenegro, which is eager to join the EU, had agreed to replicate sanctions against Russia, but in practice it only banned flights by the country's airlines. Abramovich therefore viewed the superyacht marina in Tivat as a safer location than Spain - at least temporarily, sources said.

The Solaris hurriedly left Tivat last Monday just before the EU announced it had followed the UK’s lead and sanctioned Abramovich over his Kremlin links.

Shipping tracker websites showed the yacht’s destination was originally posted as Istanbul, allowing it to cross the Bosphorus channel into the Black Sea and reach Russia if necessary.

But the destination was later removed and changed to say ‘awaiting orders’ as it moved down the Adriatic and into the Ionian. Last week the Solaris failed to head north east to Istanbul after rounding mainland Greece, meaning that Istanbul seemed an unlikely destination.

It instead continued east in waters south of Crete, slowing to a virtual standstill for up to seven hours on Saturday as the crew appeared to dither over where they were heading.

The Solaris could have headed south east to go through the Suez Canal and reach Dubai or the Seychelles where other yachts owned by oligarchs have sought sanctuary.

At one point the Russian tanker Vyazma – previously linked to the Russian navy - appeared beside it, leading to social media speculation that it could have been refuelling the Solaris.

But shipping tracker sites revealed that the Vyazma did not slow down and the vessels remained a mile apart.

The Vyazma has previously been seen alongside Russian warships around Norway and in the North Sea as well as the Mediterranean.

The Solaris picked up speed to more than nine knots as it sailed yesterday morning through the narrow channel between the Greek island of Simi near Rhodes and mainland Turkey, after updating its voyage description to ‘scenic cruising’.

It then skirted carefully around Greek territory Kos to reach Bodrum where Abramovich has previously holidayed on his yachts, and docked beside a jetty at around 2.30pm UK time.

Last week MailOnline revealed how Abramovich’s yachts were brazenly flying Red Ensign flags giving them British protection on the high seas – despite facing UK sanctions.

Both yachts are registered in the British overseas territory of Bermuda, entitling them to fly Bermuda’s version of the Red Ensign, featuring the Union Jack in a top corner.

Abramovich faces having his yachts seized if they stray in to UK waters after he was sanctioned by the British government 12 days ago over his links to President Putin.

But bizarrely the Red Ensign registration means he can enjoy a range of benefits from the UK including British consular assistance and protection of the Royal Navy.

The UK’s official Government website states: ‘The Red Ensign, is one of the most admired and well known emblems on the high seas with every vessel sporting it under the protection of the Royal Navy’.

It adds that ships sailing under the flag can enjoy ‘international tax breaks’ and ‘British consular support for ships in foreign docks’.

The rules mean that Abramovich could even technically ask for the assistance of the British government if his yachts are threatened with ‘sanctions’ by another country.

Ian Hodge, the chairman of the Merchant Navy Association described the flying of the Red Ensign on the yachts as an ‘embarrassment’ and called for them to be de-registered by the Bermudan authorities.

The flying of Bermuda’s version of the Red Ensign on the Abramovich yachts has also protests in the UK’s former colony which has the Queen as its head of state.

Bermuda resident Frank Morgan said the continuing registration of the yachts on the island was at odds with the territory’s support for the people of Ukraine.

Abramovich was spotted in Tel Aviv airport on Monday last week before he flew on his private jet to Istanbul.

The same jet left Istanbul for Moscow just hours later, according to flight tracker records, and Abramovich has not been seen since.

The Solaris which has a crew of 60 was built for Abramovich by German yard Lloyd Werft in Bremerhaven and was only launched last year.

It has eight decks, cabins for 36 guests, a gym, sauna, jacuzzi and a swimming pool that can be converted into a dance floor, a flotilla of jet-skis, at least one helicopter, and a rumoured personal submarine.

Both Solaris and Eclipse are also thought to have a series of security measures to protect against pirates, kidnappers or special forces from hostile states.

They are said to include radar-controlled missile detection systems, bulletproof windows and armoured protection around their wheelhouses and main cabins.

From CruisersWiki

Marmaris is a major yacht harbor in SE Turkey within a landlocked bay. It is very busy and noisy at peak holiday periods. The town was attractive but it has been overrun by rowdy tourists. Fortunately the old town retains some of its older charm. It is surrounded however by the worst of sprawl with eating establishments catering to foreign tastes proudly advertising their non-turkish specialties such as: roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, fish & chips, and full English breakfasts while broadcasting ear splitting rap "music". The Turkey I have grown to love has been displaced here. Even the wonderful Turkish ice-cream, dandurma , has been replaced by the insipid international brands. During the tourist season the beach is wall to wall raw human flesh with a very strong smell of sun tanning cream. Definitely best experienced out of season.

It is best to approach Marmaris via the channel (Sark Boğazi) between Keçi Adasi to the W and Yildiz or Nimara Adasi to the E, staying in the middle of the channel.

Warning: There can be very strong gusts in Sark Boğazi when there is a strong southerly wind.

All three marinas also have a Customs man who does check ins/out for a fee of course. Otherwise one reports to the "doctor", passport police and customs in the Ferry Terminal and then to the Harbourmaster in the town - in this order for checking in. For checking out it is in the reverse order but the doctor is omitted. A Transit Log can be bought at the Chamber of Shipping Offices in the Arcade around the corner from the Harbourmaster's office. We have always found it prudent to purchase a new Transit Log when checking in or out if we are staying in Turkey as the Log is only valid fo 1 check in and 1 check out. It is quite a walk from ferry terminal to the Harbour master so great to have it ready for use.

Marmaris Harbor

Harbour icon

There are two possibilities in Marmaris harbor: the Netsel Marina , with all the amenities, and the municipal yacht quay. This latter is always busy with local and daily tour boats, hence, very difficult to get a berth.

In addition to Netsel Marina , there are two more marinas in the area: Albatros Marina and Yacht Marina .

For those who wants to stay in anchor, there are two options; in front of the beach W of main harbour or in front of Yacht Marin. Both anchorages are generally safe and hold pretty well with sand buttom but be aware of Eastely or Southerlies that enter the bay from Yalanci Bogaz (where Yat Marin is located); they can reach over 50 kts..

Ekincik Liman

Anchorage icon

Ekincik is 20 nm East of Marmaris almost half way to Göçek or Fethiye and is a cove with several anchorages and a restaurant quay with laid moorings. It is the most convenient place to stay for visiting the near by delta of the Köycegiz Çay (river). Up river is the ancient Caunus , the picturesque village of Dalyan , and the green Köycegiz Golü lake.

In the last several years many Turkish and foreign journalists under the influence of Mr. Kurt owner of Sardis Tours (one of the day-trip operators) have staged a partially successful campaign to block development along the beach of the estuary of the Dalyan river which is, along with Zakynthos , one of the main breeding grounds of the threatened sea turtles Caretta caretta .

There are two areas that you can anchor, both which can get crowded. The SW cove is usually the least crowded. If you anchor there you should take a very long line to a tree. The NE cove is the most crowded but it also affords the best protection from the meltemi . Depths are 8-15 m and the bottom is sand with good holding. During the day there is continuous traffic of day-trip boats to the river.

In the E cove, the My Marina restaurant has constructed a very attractive quay with laid moorings, water and electricity and space for up to 20 yachts. Depth on the outer T >3m, along the wall 1.5 - 2.5m. Obviously, if you use the moorings, you are expected to dine in the restaurant. Restaurant is attractive and only a bit expensive. You should have a long line at the bow ready on arrival for the "sailors" (who meet arriving yachts in a RIB) to take through an eye in the mooring line and pass back to you.

Provisioning

There are many supermarkets in city center, most of them are open 7/24 during the high season.

  • There are many restaurants. It is best to stay within the old town
  • Two of the best (no hassle) are in the Marina area on way into Old Town

Transportation

  • 60 km to Dalaman Airport -€126 in 2009
  • In the summer daily ferries to Rhodes 50 mins in Catamaran

Places to Visit

From ekinçik liman.

A visit to the river and Caunus is a must. It seems that as soon as you anchor a day trip boat will come and you can make arrangements for a day excursion. The cost can be steep ($170 in 1997 for a party of 3). You can contact Mr. Abidir Kurt of Sardis Tours on the VHF channel 6 or on his mobil phone +90 532 281 6411.

The river, Köyceğiz Çay , is breathtaking but now there are appreciably fewer birds and other wildlife. They used to be, being scared by the constant traffic and noise of the day trip boats.

Half way to Dalyan is Caunus which was an important Carian city and was a member of the Delian League . Today one can see the remains of the acropolis, theater, several temples, and baths, as well as the many Lycian tombs carved on the slopes.

The town of Dalyan is picturesque but it is overwhelmed with tourists and overpriced restaurants serving indifferent food (however, statue of a sea turtle taking off is impressive and worth a stop).

Although it is not part of the standard tour a visit to lake of Köycegiz Golü is worth taking. The waters of the lake are of a deep green color. It is also worthwhile to visit Sultaniye on the W side of the lake. It is a hot spring spa and totally unspoiled by tourism. Many people go to a building which has a pool where they plunge into the water which reaches 41° C. After they soak in the pool, they plunge again into the cool lake. In Sultaniye there is a wood-burning bakery where one can buy very tasty bread.

The Turkish Riviera town has been inhabited since at least 1,044BC when Marmaris Castle was first built by the Ionians. The castle itself has seen warfare through the ages, with the Ottoman Emperor Suleyiman the Great expanding it ahead of his conquest of Rhodes, and in World War 1 it was shelled heavily by the French Navy.

Marmaris Old Town was first built in the 1600s and in the 1990s was extensively renovated for the tourist trade. Today you will find the narrow streets full of bars, restaurants and cafes offering the best of Turkish cuisine - and its famous coffee!

Right in the centre of the town is Netsel Marina, from where you will likely begin your sailing vacation. Though it has its own bar and restaurant, you may soon be distracted by the nearby bars and restaurants that overlook the marina - there is plenty to enjoy in this part of town.

For those looking to relax a bit, the long pebble beach and turquoise seas will be just what you need ahead of beginning your sailing holiday exploring the bays and towns of the Carian Coast.

Explore Marmaris By Renting A Yacht

A Marmaris yacht charter is one of the best ways of exploring this part of the Mediterranean Sea. Whether on a 'blue cruise' (gulet holiday) charter, a bareboat yacht charter or a luxury yacht charter, you will soon find yourself in one of the most beautiful parts of the Aegean Sea.

Think to consider doing:

  • The Turquoise Coast is named thanks to its clear seas and secluded coves that will stay with you for years to come.
  • You can sail on out to Bodrum up the Carian Coast, pausing in one-restaurant-bays for your evening relaxation
  • Perhaps you could sail out to a nearby Greek Island that for centuries were part of Turkey until handed over after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire
  • You can explore major tourist attractions such as Ephesus and the Lycian rock tombs of Fethiye
  • Explore the natural wonders of the islands and mainland, going for a wander in national parks like the MarmarisNational Park

The sailing can be exciting with the NE Meltemi wind building through the day, so you will soon find yourself casting off in the morning for a blast to the next town or village and spending the afternoon ashore, taking in all your next anchorage or port has to offer.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Marmaris

Whether on a blue cruise or a bareboat yacht charter up the Turkish coast there is a lot to see and do on a Marmarissailing holiday. Here are two itineraries you can do on a 7 day or a 14 day yacht charter.

7 days - Datca Peninsula: Heading to the northern side of the Marmaris Peninsula you can take in the history and modern culture of the area. On the Hisaronu Gulf, the tourist town of Selimiye will be your furthest point with its restaurants that have their own pontoons for you to spend the night at after eating there. Heading back, spend a day at Loryma, an ancient city abandoned in the 7th Century AD with an acropolis you can explore.

14 days - Lycian Coast: This is an opportunity to explore the coast south-east as far as Kekova Roads. You will pause at the interesting old city of Fethiye with its cave tombs, and get to enjoy the best beaches in Turkey including the one at Oludeniz. Gocek Bay is one of the most beautiful on the Aegean, and Butterfly Bay is named after the thousands of butterflies that live there. Kekova Roads is famous for its quiet anchorages where you can drop the hook and row ashore to enjoy the beautiful scenery and relaxed local life.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Marmaris

The sailing season runs from April to October in Marmaris. July and August are the busiest months for a Marmarisyacht charter. This is also when the NE wind the Meltemi peaks in strength. Though this makes for a cooling blast from the fierce heat of summer, it can be challenging for all but the most experienced sailors.

With the Meltemi less powerful outside of the peak season - and the marinas and sailing waters less crowded - it may pay off to do a sailing holiday either later in the year or earlier - if you can get out in May or October you may find things calmer both in terms of crowds and winds.

Sailing Weather In Marmaris

The Meltemi winds dominate the weather of the Aegean Sea in Turkey. The further west you go - as far as Bodrum the stronger the NW winds are during the day. The further east you go - around Antalya in the east of the country, the gentler these winds are during the day. These vary day to day and through the day. The most comfortable time to sail in Turkey is during the morning every day during the holiday season. The winds tend to be lighter and steadier in the morning and can build to very exciting conditions come mid-afternoon.

What should I consider when hiring a Yacht or Boat?

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

What are the Marinas in Marmaris?

Netsel Marina is a large marina in the centre of the town, close to local amenties, bars and restaurants. With a maximum size of 90m, it can take all but the largest of superyachts afloat today.

When are the best times to hire a boat in Marmaris?

July and August are the peak of the sailing season with marinas full and anchorages at their busiest. If you can get out in September you will find the sea and air still warm but the destinations a lot less crowded.

Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Yacht in Marmaris?

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

What happens if my Yacht breaks down?

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

What should I think of before I hire a Yacht or Boat in Marmaris?

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

What Qualifications Do I need to hire a boat or yacht?

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

From Marmaris you can head west to the Dodecanese and the surrounding rugged coastline, or head east along the Turkish coast to find beaches, ancient settlements and mud-baths.

Marmaris - 6 day Sailing itinerary

It’s only a six-day itinerary because you can normally only get on the boat in the late afternoon on the first Saturday and you’ll spend the first day getting provisions in and getting familiar with the boat before setting off on Sunday morning. At the end of the week, you’ll need to get the boat back to Marmaris on Friday evening, before spending a final night on-board and then checking-out on Saturday morning.

Ciftlik

At the far end of Marmaris, look out for the Dolphinarium (the last place in Europe where you can visit captive dolphins – they are widely banned as people think Dolphins are too intelligent to be caged. This Dophinarium is run by a wilflife charity which offers the chance to swim with them to support their work.

We’re heading south then west, getting away from the hordes of tourists to the quiet bay of Ciftlik, where, nestled at the bottom of the steep mountains, you’ll find a fine sandy beach, four restaurants (complete with their own moorings, including water and electricity connections – a couple also offer wifi). It’s a place you can only really reach by boat, and it’s a great place to spend the night!

Bozzukale

We’re continuing on to Bozzukale to spend the night. It’s a secluded and beautiful bay with a selection of restaurants, mooring buoys (with free taxi services to dry land) and a public jetty. Aside from the nature (sea turtles are regular visitors to the bay, amongst others), you can hike to the ruins of an ancient castle, which is situated on the hillside above the bay and offers a good look-out to check if people in Rhodes are plotting anything nasty (as well as superlative views out to sea). In fact, Bozzukale means ‘ruined castle’ in Turkish.

Kumlubuk

In Kumlubuk, you’ll find delightfully warm crystal clear seas, sandy beaches, and plenty of places to relax and enjoy life. There’s also the largely ruined ancient settlement of Amos to visit if you fancy a hike, and if you’re bored of Turkish fayre (how could you be?), then you might be pleased to know that you can find one the best Chinese restaurants in Turkey here, complete with two chefs from Szechuan.

Ekincik

We’re spending the night in Ekincik, a well-protected bay which offers the usual lush semi-mountainous pine-tree forests and turquoise sea surroundings, peace and quiet, and a handful of restaurants and bars. It’s nice enough, but the main reason we’re here is to give you time to get yourselves set up for tomorrow...

From here, you can join a small locally organised tour boat which will take you through the reeds to the ruins of the ancient and prestigious city of Kaunos (highly recommended), the mud-baths of Dalyan (the mud here is alleged to take years off your age) or Iztzu beach (‘turtle beach’ where you’ll find hundreds of turtles during the breeding season). It’s possible to do all three in a morning or afternoon. (NB: You are not allowed to sail up to Dalyan yourselves).

Asi Koyu

There is a beach-bar in the bay, but this romantic setting is perfect for sampling the local wines, which are underrated - Turkey can actually stake two claims to be the birthplace of wine: grapes grow wild here and wine-making equipment found in present-day Armenia dates back to 4,100 BC (but they estimate that vines and wine have been cultivated since about 12,000 BC!)

The second claim is that in Genesis in the bible, Noah, after 40 days of floods on his ark, ‘planted a vineyard’ – the ark is reported to have landed near Mount Ararat, in Turkey. Many people have tried to find the ark (a bit like the Loch Ness monster) and some believe it is buried under the permanent snow-cap on Mount Ararat itself. Discuss.

Marmaris

But don’t worry – we still have a day of epic sailing in the sunshine to do first. Today is the longest leg, though at 24 nM, it hopefully shouldn’t feel like too much of a slog. You’ll likely be tacking up the prevailing wind with Paradise Island and, behind it, Marmaris, on the nose of the boat for the duration.

Maybe now is the time to get team-photo to remember this trip by: you can choose from the sea or a coastal backdrop, or you could even try and get one as you sail past Marmaris beach or castle. If you haven’t yet ventured into Marmaris itself, then it is worth a walk around: it has a long history and there are the modern day souks to haggle in, well-manicured beaches, and a lively bar atmosphere, particularly after sunset.

And then the holiday is over. Hopefully you’ve enjoyed exploring the orient, everyone got on well, and you’re leaving with even better friends than you arrived with. When you’re ready to start planning your next sailing adventure, head to PlainSailing.com! Safe travels, and hopefully see you soon :)

Sailing Conditions

Turkey Sailing - Wind Conditions

This makes it a little bit easier for last-minute changes of plan, when you see a cute littel bay, or hear something good about the taverna nearby, as here are plenty of spots to moor up without feeling too exposed.

In spring and autumn, other weather systems can also play a part for a few days at a time, so you might find winds arriving from the South. At the height of winter, winds can seemingly arrive from any direction.

Wind strengths and speeds also vary during the year, but tend to be between force 3 to 5 during summer – which is ideal sailing conditions – or stronger if you head out to the Dodecanese island. Winds are slightly stronger in winter.

Netsel Marina, Marmaris

Marmaris Netsel marina is one of the biggest marinas in the Med, with space for over 830 boats. It's located within handy walking distance of the old town and the beaches, but it boasts so many facilities (tennis courts, swimming pool, a 40 store shopping-centre, a supermarket and multiple bars and restaurants) that you could get away without ever leaving the marina. And if you do want to explore the local area, there's also a car hire desk on-site. In short, it has everything you need for a pleasant start or end to the holiday, and it's busy in a nice way.

If your flights don't land or depart on a Saturday, and you need somewhere to spend a night or two before or after your charter, then we recommend staying at the Sunset Marmaris boutique hotel (the closest hotel to the marina), or the Blue Yacht Marina Aparthotel (which also offer 4 person apartments at great prices).

Marmaris yacht marina.

Marmaris Yacht Marina is based in Adakoy, across the bay from Marmaris itself, and is beautifully located on a small spit of land connecting what would be an island to the mainland.  There isn't all that much in Adakoy, beside a few luxury resorts, but Marmaris centre is only 3km away, so a very short taxi ride.

How To Get To Marmaris
