I f you are reading this, you may be among the many skippers considering the Star 45 for their next boat.  You’re not alone but there are some things you should ask yourself before choosing which Star you would like to sail. Do I buy a glass boat or do I build a wood boat.  Hopefully what we will share next will help you on your way.

Glass VS Wood

  Benefits of a wood boat…

You build it, which is nice and if you actually have the time and are able to complete the build, you have something to be proud of.  CPM has seen some very beautiful boats.

Cost... The out of pocket cost of a wood boat is quite inexpensive and you can buy components as you need them.

Not so good benefits of a wood boat…

There really are no two wood boats that are exactly alike.  Some of these differences are simply cosmetic while others effect performance and speed.  Your skill as a builder and how you set up your boat can often effect your results on the race course.  Since there are few that are identical, you never really know what to change or adjust to make the boat go faster when it is not.

  Resale value…

Lets say you missed a key build feature in your first boat that unless it is fixed, will keep you finishing in the middle of the fleet.  You decide to put your boat up for sale and build another.  Since you are now trying to sell your boat to the home built market, you should not expect to get much money for your boat regardless if it is complete and ready to sail.

  Benefits of a Glass boat…

If you want the building experience, CPM can provide you with a kit from hull deck rudder and keel to a complete kit with rig, sails and radio.  You don’t have to hunt down suppliers as the kit comes as complete as you want.  When you have a question about how to tackle a certain part of the build, you are not posting questions to a forum where people don’t know your boat.  CPM knows exactly how to build it so if you have a problem simply call us or e-mail us your question and we will get right back to you.

If you are like most of our customers, brimming with enthusiasm for racing but short on time to build your own boat, then you may elect to purchase a ready to sail Star.  You would do so knowing that your new Star is race ready and has the right combination of balance and speed to win regattas.  You might consider this big talk so we would rather let our track record speak for us.  CPM/Skidoo hulls have been in the winners circle 6 out of the last 10 National Championships.  That is no easy feat and  it demonstrates that CPM is committed and able to deliver a Championship boat each and ever time.  The winning lies with you and your thumbs.

  Resale…

CPM boats have a history of holding their value even in a down economy. Mostly because people are short on time trying to make ends meet and don’t have the time to build a wood boat.

We hope that what we have shared here will help you choose which type boat you would like to build/sail.  Both glass and wood have very strong arguments that favor each.  Which ever you choose, we hope you do choose and join us for what is one of the best classes in the AMYA.  See you on the pond.

Now available from CPM in Short Kit form and Fully Built is the One Design STAR 45. Recently featured in the AMYA quarterly Issues #113 and #143.

CPM purchased the Star 45 tooling from Ski-Doo Ind. in '07 and has started manufacturing the boats at our Shop in Stevensville MD. The record for hulls from this tooling is one of the best in the country with Scott Rowland of Dayton, OH winning the '99, '01,'03 and '04 National Championships.

David Ramos won the Nationals in 2007 and the 2008 National Champion Chuck Luscomb all won with a CPM boat in there first star regatta.

TERRIFIC PEOPLE

We race at model yacht clubs throughout the United States.  The class attracts  sailors who take racing seriously but don't take themselves too seriously.

BUILT TO RACE

The 45" long Star 45 weighs 12 to 13 lbs, carries about 1000 sq. in. of sail, and with a ballast/weight ratio near 70%, it is super responsive in all conditions.

Star Class 45″ Laser-cut Frame Set – Kit number MW230!

Modeller’s Workshop is proud to be producing laser-cut frames for the Star 45 R/C sailboat. We are now supplying the most recent revision of the design perfected by John Fisher, one of the best-known Star sailors, and consistent winner of Star 45 events.

These plans are derived from boat number 842, a boat that has placed in the top four at Star regional championships in 08, 09, 2010, and 2012.

These plans are based on the original Star 45 Class Association plans that were designed in 1984. These drawings are found on Dave Mainwaring’s blog at www.woodstar45/blogspot.ca . Dave’s site is one of many that are dedicated to this amazing R/C sailboat class. If there’s one boat that can be built consistently, and to exacting specifications, this is it.

Apart from Dave’s site and drawings done by a successful sailor, there is an avid community of Star 45 sailors. The Star 45 Class Association is found at www.theamya.org/boats/star45/ and the Yahoo Community group is at Star 45 Yahoo Group .

Our frames include all the main bulkheads, flat parts for the foils, parts for the semi-bulkheads and a special internal jig to aid the alignment of the frame as shown in this picture:

Note that in this picture each frame is further supported by a jig mounted to a build board. You’ll find all kinds of ideas like this in the various resources noted above.

Once the frame is built, our frames are cut with notches for stringers, as shown in this picture:

Note that this picture shows the assembly of two boats at the same time. This is really the best way to learn how to tune boats. With two boats, you can make adjustments to one at a time and see how the boats react.

Next, one of the nice things about building a Star is that it has fairly flat sides. This means the planking is simple and quick. You get in the water faster with a Star than with a boat that needs typical planking.

I can go on and on but there are plenty of websites, as noted above, that can help you build a wonderful R/C boat. Why not have join this wonderful group?

It would be a pleasure for the Modeller’s Workshop to cut a set of frames for you.

Best Regards,

Modeller’s Workshop Montreal, Canada

About STAR 45

The Star 45 is a 45″ long hard chine, semi-scale model of the legendary full-size International Star boat. Star 45s can be home-built using plans available from the AMYA, partially fabricated with major components available from suppliers, or purchased custom built to any stage of completion from class-approved builders. Available laser-cut frames for wood construction produce a consistent competitive hull. Fiberglass hulls, decks, short kits and parts as well as complete boats are available from class suppliers; contact information for them can be found on the class website. The Star 45 is big enough to sail like a full-size boat, but is easily managed and small enough to be transported in any car. It is sophisticated enough to be a good trainer, offering the racing sailor full adjustability, but not overwhelming to a newcomer. Star 45 racing is very competitive. We’re looking for new skippers who want to race!

Boats Produced: Approximately 1,000 boats have been registered with the class; not all are currently active, and undoubtedly some have been built that are not registered.

One Design Profile: Star Class

April 27, 2013 by Sail1Design Editor Leave a Comment

“The class of champions”

In the past one hundred years, the Star has established itself at the forefront of the international sailing community. The first one-design class and core Olympic racing yacht since 1932, the Star attracts sailors of varying ages and skill levels from all over the world. With nearly 2,000 boats competing annually and over 170 active fleets world-wide, the development of the class is not likely to slow down in the foreseeable future.

star yacht model boats

Designed in 1911 by naval architect Francis Sweisguth, the Star was born to replace the 17-foot “Bug,” which was one of the most popular keelboats at the time. By May 1911, the first Star class regatta was held on Long Island Sound and featured five of Sweisguth’s new boats. By 1922, the Stars already numbered in the hundreds, thus leading to the foundation of the International Star Class Yacht Racing Association (ISCYRA).

star yacht model boats

Just under twenty-three feet in length, the hull is long and narrow and features an integrated bulb keel positioned just aft of the mast. In adherence to strict class rules, the Star weighs 1,479 pounds and is typically constructed of fiberglass. Older wooden hulls can still be found from time to time, but rarely in competition. The hull has gentle, sweeping chines leading toward the water line that not only provide a speed advantage, but attribute to the yacht’s aesthetically pleasing appearance.

During the yacht’s one hundred year history, new features have been incorporated into the design in an effort to maintain the class’ position as the pinnacle of the international racing community. The class association began asserting a control over new refinements, not to stifle progress, but to maintain a level of competition based more on the skill of the sailor than the technological advancements of the yacht. Some of the features include:

  • Adjustable jib leads
  • Crew hiking vest
  • Suction bailers
  • Unique, circular boom vang
  • Whisker pole
  • Strict class association sail measurements

One of the interesting features of the Star is the hiking vest. The vest is worn by the crew and allows him or her to adopt a unique hiking position by “drooping” their body over the side of the hull. In addition to the vest, the Star also features a circular vang system. Designed for the star, but eventually adopted other classes, the circular vang system provides a safe means to deal with the enormous loads of the yacht’s large sail plan.

star yacht model boats

Numerous champions of the sailing world spent time sailing the Star and hold prestigious international titles. A Star Class World Championship is often considered on the most coveting trophies in all of sailing. Despite the high level of competition at top tier events, the Star also offers opportunities to local and amateur sailors. The depth of skill level and opportunity is unrivaled by any other racing class. Sailors looking to compete at the local level can often gain experience with the boat and progress up through the levels of competition, not to mention enjoy the thrill of sailing such an incredible boat.

Get involved with the Star Class! If you want to begin racing there are plenty of Stars out there looking for a good home. Thanks to the regulation in design features, many older Stars perform just as well as their newer counterparts and run at affordable prices. If you are a former college sailor or young professional looking to stay active at the highest level of competition or looking for a fast boat to sail at the local level perhaps a Star should be your next boat…

Sadly, in 2011, it was decided that the keelboats would be removed as an Olympic class following the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Recently rumors began to circulate of comeback for the 2016 Games; however these were quashed almost immediately by the ISCYRA. Despite being struck from the Olympic books the Star class has showed no signs of losing momentum. Huge turnouts for Barcardi Race Week and the 2012 Star Winter Series appear to have breathed new life into the yacht. With hundreds of local regattas scheduled this year and dozens at the internationals and championship level, the Star class remains strong

Welcome to the International Star Class, home of the premier one-design racing keel boat in the world.  For 100 years Star sailors have led the way in advancing the sport of competitive sailing, and have been honored by sailing in the Olympic Games since 1932.  With over 2,200 members and fleets in 38 countries, Star Class championship events are hosted at venues around the globe. At a Star Class regatta you will find Olympic and World Champions competing alongside sailors of all ages and skill levels eager to sail at the highest level of the sport. Join us as we lead the sport of sailing into our next century.

"To be Star world champion I think is the biggest achievement that a sailor can have. To win two times is to be a part of the story of Star class, it means a lot. The Star class is very special. It’s the class of all the biggest names."

Bruno Prada (BRA) after winning the 2011 World Championship with Robert Scheidt

Star Class History

Dozens, probably hundreds, of classes of racing sailboats have come into existence, lasted a few years, and then dropped out of the yacht racing picture. How does it happen that one class, the International Star, designed in the early 1900s is thriving and is raced today on all levels and in dozens of countries of the world? There is no single answer to this question. Many factors have contributed and still contribute to the phenomenal success and long life of the Star.

If you were to ask a top flight racing skipper why he sails Stars he might tell you that he likes the "high performance" qualities of the boat as a superb racing machine. Or he might point to the calibre of the competition, not only on the World Championship and Olympic level but in many lesser events. The skipper and crew who enjoy a varied program of sailing in different localities would emphasize the quantity and quality of intersectional Star events available all over the world. The Star sailor who never travels, on the other hand, would tell you what fine racing he has at home year after year. The major Class officers, those dedicated souls who have to do with running the organization, meeting and solving the multitude of problems that arise in a class of this magnitude, would tell you that the I.S.C.Y.R.A., the Class Association, is the force that holds the Class together and also the power plant that drives it. And every one of these people, all of whom are members of the Star Class, would emphasize the bond of fellowship that exists world-wide among Star owners and sailors.

Star Mainsails

Star Mainsail 50

Star Mainsail 50

star yacht model boats

The 50 is our fullest mainsail. The full top sections help you get your crew over the side sooner, and the overall depth profile gives you plenty of power for light-to-medium air venues. Consider the 50 as your best sail for San Diego or Viareggio, both venues with oversized swell and chop, or in Miami up to 15 knots. The extra fullness also makes the sail quicker sailing downwind as well. INCLUDES: Battens, vision windows, roll bag, royalties, telltales, and tackline. Draft stripes available.

Close

Star Mainsail 57

The 57 sail is designed with a flatter bottom third to help the sail go faster in venues with shorter chop and in venues with flatter water. This sail also performs well for lighter teams and for days when you just know it is going to be windy all day long. The 57 is more sensitive to outhaul inputs, so in lighter air you’ll be playing the outhaul more. This is a sail well suited for inshore choppy water sailing. INCLUDES: Battens, vision windows, roll bag, royalties, telltales, and tackline. Draft stripes available.

Star Mainsail Z-4

Star Mainsail Z-4

This sail won its first World Championship in 1994, and it continues to surprise us with its time-tested speed. It won the NAs again in 2021 and was third in 2023. Fuller in the bottom and flatter in the top compared to most of our sails, this sail is still preferred by many sailors in light-to-medium venues. The Z-4 gives crews an unmatched level of control, balance, and power in every condition. INCLUDES: Battens, vision windows, roll bag, royalties, telltales, and tackline. Draft stripes available.

Star Mainsail 46

Star Mainsail 46

The 46 is our straight down the middle, all-purpose mainsail. It gives crews an outstanding level of control, balance, and power in every condition. Constructed of premium Dimension Polyant cloth, this design is durable, providing power and shape retention across the conditions. INCLUDES: Battens, vision windows, roll bag, royalties, telltales, and tackline. Draft stripes available.

Star Headsails

Star Jib P-16

Star Jib P-16

This is our fullest jib, and is also our all-around go-to jib for every condition. All of our Star jibs are optimized for a larger wind range cross-over. Designed for depth and power, the P-16 is a top performer, finishing second at the Worlds in 2022 and winning the North Americans in 2021, 2022, and 2023. INCLUDES: Battens, vision windows, roll bag, royalties, and telltales. Draft stripes available.

Star Jib P-17

Star Jib P-17

With a more open head and powerful lower sections to drive through waves, the P-17 is designed for breeze. We find the sail performs better in medium-to-strong winds, but it can also be sailed down-range and is versatile, as all of our Star jibs are optimized for a larger wind range cross-over. INCLUDES: Battens, vision windows, roll bag, royalties, and telltales. Draft stripes available.

This product may be ordered through your local rep or a class expert.

Star Jib P-2C

Star Jib P-2C

he P-2C has a slightly flatter mid and bottom section, compared to the P-12 and P-16. In light air you may need to move your lead more forward to get the fullness required to go fast, so pay close attention to your jib sheet angle. The P-2C was the winner in the 2009 World Championships, INCLUDES: Battens, vision windows, roll bag, royalties, and telltales. Draft stripes available.

Star Yacht model sailing boat display stands

When the Star Yacht factory finally closed it’s doors in 1990 it had been manufacturing these wonderful models for nearly 70 years, they were essentially toys – beautifully made and, as proudly boasted on the deck emblem, “Guaranteed to Sail”. Their main purpose was to sail across the uncharted waters of the local park pond, delighting children when they reached the other side and frustrating parents when they didn’t…

Display stands were of little importance – they were never, so far as I’m aware, supplied with the smaller yachts but had to be purchased separately so, consequently, demand was low and they were only ever made in very small numbers. Those that were produced were very crude, hand painted and not particularly well finished judging by the few examples I’ve been fortunate to find, ultimately – they’re very rare and finding one to display your treasured Star Yacht isn’t really an option nowadays.

With the above in mind I’ve produced a small batch of beautifully made reproduction hardwood stands in four different sizes, to suit the majority of models in the Star Yachts fleet, and three different authentic colour variations.

I am also able to make up custom made stands to order, please contact me with your requirements.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

star yacht model boats

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

star yacht model boats

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

star yacht model boats

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

star yacht model boats

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

star yacht model boats

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

star yacht model boats

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Scientists identify origin of the 'BOAT' — the brightest cosmic blast of all time

"When we confirmed that the gamma-ray burst was generated by the collapse of a massive star, that gave us the opportunity to test a hypothesis for how some of the heaviest elements in the universe are formed."

A pinkish spherical blast is seen with a yellow laser-like streak strewn diagonally through the center. In the background, is it patchy and green.

Using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), scientists have finally solved the mysterious origins of the "BOAT," possibly the biggest cosmic explosion since the Big Bang.

The brightest gamma-ray burst of all time (hence the acronym the Brightest Of All Time ), aka the BOAT, seems to have been launched by a supernova explosion that accompanied the death and collapse of a massive star located around 2.4 million light-years away. This is an event that probably also led to the birth of a black hole. By solving this cosmic mystery, however, the team of astrophysicists has opened up yet another celestial puzzle. That's because traces of heavy elements like gold and platinum, traces one would expect to linger around this kind of supernova, are nowhere to be found.

"This was an event that Earth sees only once every 10,000 years," Peter Blanchard, team leader and a Northwestern University scientist, said in a statement. "The event produced some of the highest-energy photons ever recorded by satellites designed to detect gamma rays ."

Related: Brightest gamma-ray burst ever seen, the largest known explosion since Big Bang, has a unique jet structure unlike any other

"When we confirmed that the GRB was generated by the collapse of a massive star, that gave us the opportunity to test a hypothesis for how some of the heaviest elements in the universe are formed," Blanchard added. "We did not see signatures of these heavy elements, suggesting that extremely energetic GRBs like the BOAT do not produce these elements."

Scientists didn't miss the BOAT

The BOAT, officially designated  GRB 221009A , was first spotted on Oct. 9, 2022, and it immediately stood out from other GRBs due to its extreme nature. Astronomers spotted it as an immensely bright flash of high-energy gamma rays followed by a fading afterglow across many wavelengths of light .

The powerful GRB was first spotted by gamma-ray and X-ray telescopes, including NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope and the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory . After the BOAT's initial detection, awestruck astronomers rushed to find its potential source. They pointed their telescopes in the direction of the constellation Sagitta , believing that's where the answer must lie.

"As long as we have been able to detect GRBs, there is no question that this GRB is the brightest we have ever witnessed by a factor of 10 or more," one of the discoverers of the BOAT Wen-fai Fong, an associate professor of physics and astronomy and leader of the Fong Group at Northwestern, had said around the time of discovery.

Blanchard and colleagues, however, didn't rush to chase the BOAT.

Instead, they wanted to view the BOAT as it evolved, and track it during its later stages. Thus, they trained the JWST on the fading gamma-ray burst around six months after it was first spotted.

The brightest gamma-ray burst ever seen as observed by the Swift X-Ray Telescope around an hour after it erupted.

"The GRB was so bright that it obscured any potential supernova signature in the first weeks and months after the burst," Blanchard said. "At these times, the so-called afterglow of the GRB was like the headlights of a car coming straight at you, preventing you from seeing the car itself.

"So, we had to wait for it to fade significantly to give us a chance of seeing the supernova."

Using the JWST's Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) instrument, Blanchard and colleagues observed the BOAT's infrared afterglow. This revealed the signature of elements like calcium and oxygen, all of which are characteristic of supernovas.

What was surprising, however, was the even though the BOAT is the most powerful cosmic eruption of its kind ever detected, the supernova that created it actually seemed pretty average for such an explosive stellar death.

"It's not any brighter than previous supernovas. It looks fairly normal in the context of other supernovas associated with less energetic GRBs," Blanchard said. "You might expect that the same collapsing star producing a very energetic and bright GRB would also produce a very energetic and bright supernova. But it turns out that's not the case. We have this extremely luminous GRB, but a normal supernova."

a large bright white fireball star emanates a sphere of fiery expulsion

The team isn't currently sure how a "normal" supernova could have created a blast of energy as massive as the BOAT.

Team member and University of Utah assistant professor of physics Tammoy Laskar thinks the extreme GRB could be a result of the shape and structure of near-light speed jets launched by collapsing massive stars as they create black holes. If a massive star is rapidly spinning when it collapses, then the beams it blasts out are narrow, then more focused, and, thus, brighter.

"It's like focusing a flashlight's beam into a narrow column, as opposed to a broad beam that washes across a whole wall," Laskar said. "In fact, this was one of the narrowest jets seen for a gamma-ray burst so far, which gives us a hint as to why the afterglow appeared as bright as it did.

"There may be other factors responsible as well, a question that researchers will be studying for years to come."

Furthermore, another aspect of this supernova that will warrant a much deeper investigation isn't something it has, but rather those things it appears to lack.

The missing elements

The hearts of stars are like stellar furnaces that fuse together light elements to create progressively heavier elements. This process forms elements right up to iron, but after that, even the most massive stars struggle to fuse heavier elements such as gold and platinum.

For many years, scientists have suspected that these relatively heavier elements are created when massively dense, dead stars called neutron stars smash together , with the JWST recently playing a key role in helping to confirm such a theory.

Yet researchers also thought the extreme environments created around supernovas capable of launching GRBs could facilitate the "rapid capture" of neutrons, or the "r-process," that forges elements like gold. The reason for this conjecture is neutron star collisions alone seem too rare to create the amounts of elements heavier than lead scientists see in the early universe .

An illustration of two neutron stars colliding and merging to create a kilonova blast that new research indicates may be perfect spheres

"There is likely another source. It takes a very long time for binary neutron stars to merge. Two stars in a binary system first have to explode to leave behind neutron stars. Then, it can take billions and billions of years for the two neutron stars to slowly get closer and closer and finally merge," Blanchard said. "But observations of very old stars indicate that parts of the universe were enriched with heavy metals before most binary neutron stars would have had time to merge.

"That's pointing us to an alternative channel."

That alternative channel had been theorized to be the collapse of a rapidly spinning and massive star, the exact type of event that scientists have now confirmed launched the BOAT.

Using the JWST, the team was able to peer into the deep layers of this supernova, where elements heavier than iron should be forged. "The exploded material of the star is opaque at early times, so you can only see the outer layers," Blanchard said. "But once it expands and cools, it becomes transparent. Then, you can see the photons coming from the inner layer of the supernova. Moreover, different elements absorb and emit photons at different wavelengths, depending on their atomic structure, giving each element a unique spectral signature."

That means looking at an object's spectrum can tell astronomers what elements are present.

"Upon examining the BOAT's spectrum, we did not see any signature of heavy elements, suggesting extreme events like GRB 221009A are not primary sources," Blanchard said. "This is crucial information as we continue to try to pin down where the heaviest elements are formed."

A reddish-orange, hazy disk is seen plunging out a bright white and blue stream from the center.

Blanchard also says that not detecting heavy elements around the BOAT's supernova source doesn't mean scientists should give up on studying the GRB channel of heavy-element production just yet.

"That doesn’t mean that all GRBs do not produce them, but it's a key piece of information as we continue to understand where these heavy elements come from," he said. "Future observations with JWST will determine if the BOAT's 'normal' cousins produce these elements."

In addition to learning more about the BOAT and confirming its origins with the JWST, the team was also able to detect the signature of an intense bout of star formation in the event's host galaxy. This indicated the star that died to birth the BOAT may have formed in a different environment than other supernova stars.

One aspect of this galaxy that could help further unravel the secrets of the BOAT is the fact that it appears to have a low concentration of elements heavier than hydrogen or helium, which astronomers called "metals."

"This is another unique aspect of the BOAT that may help explain its properties," team member and Penn State University graduate student Yijia Li said in the statement.

"We are fortunate to live in a time when we have the technology to detect these bursts happening across the universe," Blanchard concluded. "It's so exciting to observe such a rare astronomical phenomenon as the B.O.A.T. and work to understand the physics behind this exceptional event."

The research was published on Friday (April 12) in the journal Nature Astronomy.

Riviera teases all-new model ahead of Sanctuary Cove reveal

A single image teases what appears to be a new flagship model for the queensland-based luxury motor yacht maker.

Gold Coast luxury motor yacht manufacturer Riviera has teased what appears to be a new member of its motor yacht range – but uniquely featuring a walkaround space in front of the windscreen.

The new model is scheduled for a more detailed reveal at the 2024 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, which kicks off in late May.

The single teaser image released today shows a curved windscreen framed beneath a large overhang – typical of several models in Riviera’s line-up including the SUV, Sports Yacht and Sports Motor Yacht ranges – and a hint of a large bow lounge featuring a central companionway and walkaround sides.

The image is vague enough so that we can’t yet tell if the new model teased is a sedan or flybridge motor yacht.

However, the forward-leaning stanchions holding up the rails running alongside the new model suggest it may not be a new sedan-styled member alongside the recently launched Riviera 78 Motor Yacht – the flybridge-equipped model launched last year as the flagship of the entire Riviera range uses vertical stanchions to support the rails.

The sheer size of the bow lounge, though, hints that this may be a new flagship model for one of the other lines within the Riviera motor yacht range, which includes the more classically styled Belize range consisting of the 54 Sedan and 66 Sedan.

We’ve already heard from sources, too, that Riviera has already attracted several pre-orders for the new model ahead of its Sanctuary Cove appearance.

The 2024 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show runs from May 23-26.

Excitement ahead of the return of Shrewsbury's dragon boat festival

Preparations are well underway for a charity’s headline fundraising event which takes place in Shrewsbury later this year.

star yacht model boats

Things are shaping up well for Severn Hospice’s July Dragon Boat Festival when a record breaking 45 boats will take to the waters of the River Severn.

The event raises thousands of pounds for the charity which cares for and supports local people who are living with incurable illness.

Sponsored again this year by global digital marketing company Croud, the Dragon Boat Festival is the most hotly anticipated event in Severn Hospice’s calendar.

star yacht model boats

The charity has staged the event, which takes place between Shrewsbury School boat house and the Pengwern Boat Club each summer for more than 20 years.

The festival, which this year is on the weekend of July 20 and 21, attracts local businesses, sports clubs, work colleagues and groups of friends keen to win the title of 'Dragon Boat Champion'.

Elodie Home, head of fundraising at Severn Hospice, said: “The support we receive each year for our Dragon Boat Festival is amazing.

“It really is a firm favourite with our supporters and each year we think it can’t get any better – and each year it does.

“There really is nothing better than watching the boats churn up the water while soaking up the atmosphere on the riverbanks and it is great that so many teams are onboard this year – in fact we may be on for a record.”

Last year’s winners, CrossFit SY1 and RAF Shawbury will be back this year, keen to retain their titles at Dragon Boat champions.

“There is some very friendly rivalry, but all the teams are out to win and raise as much money for us as they can,” added Elodie.

“The boats are provided by Dragonboats UK, and we are delighted that Croud has chosen to sponsor the festival again this year. They have had teams in the festival each year and they are great supporters of ours and we can’t thank them enough.

"We are also very grateful to Refresh at Severn Hospice who will be at the festival over the two days and the boat clubs for allowing us to use their premises.”

Hannah McCormack, office manager from Croud added: “We are yet again delighted to be sponsoring the 2024 Dragon Boat Race for the third year running.

“This event is one of the highlights of our calendar and the whole company gets stuck in either competing, cheering or raising money for this incredible cause.

“All of us will be affected by cancer in-directly or personally at some point in our lives, and Severn Hospice provides our whole community with the most brilliant support and care. It’s a privilege to be able to join them in their efforts to fundraise and bring the whole of Shrewsbury together on the river.”

Still the BOAT —

A supernova caused the boat gamma ray burst, jwst data confirms, but astronomers are puzzled by the lack of signatures of expected heavy elements..

Jennifer Ouellette - Apr 12, 2024 9:00 am UTC

Artist's visualization of GRB 221009A showing the narrow relativistic jets — emerging from a central black hole — that gave rise to the brightest gamma ray burst yet detected.

In October 2022, several space-based detectors picked up a powerful gamma-ray burst so energetic that astronomers nicknamed it the BOAT (Brightest Of All Time). Now they've confirmed that the GRB came from a supernova, according to a new paper published in the journal Nature Astronomy. However, they did not find evidence of heavy elements like platinum and gold one would expect from a supernova explosion, which bears on the longstanding question of the origin of such elements in the universe.

As we've reported previously , gamma-ray bursts are extremely high-energy explosions in distant galaxies lasting between mere milliseconds to several hours. There are two classes of gamma-ray bursts. Most (70 percent) are long bursts lasting more than two seconds, often with a bright afterglow. These are usually linked to galaxies with rapid star formation. Astronomers think that long bursts are tied to the deaths of massive stars collapsing to form a neutron star or black hole (or, alternatively, a newly formed magnetar ). The baby black hole would produce jets of highly energetic particles moving near the speed of light, powerful enough to pierce through the remains of the progenitor star, emitting X-rays and gamma rays.

Those gamma-ray bursts lasting less than two seconds (about 30 percent) are deemed short bursts, usually emitting from regions with very little star formation. Astronomers think these gamma-ray bursts are the result of mergers between two neutron stars, or a neutron star merging with a black hole, comprising a "kilonova." That hypothesis was confirmed in 2017 when the LIGO collaboration picked up the gravitational wave signal of two neutron stars merging, accompanied by the powerful gamma-ray bursts associated with a kilonova.

The October 2022 gamma-ray burst falls into the long category, lasting over 300 seconds. GRB 221009A triggered detectors aboard NASA's  Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope , the  Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory , and  Wind spacecraft , among others, just as gamma-ray astronomers had gathered for an annual meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa. The powerful signal came from the constellation Sagitta, traveling some 1.9 billion years to Earth.

Further Reading

Several papers were published last year reporting on the analytical results of all the observational data. Those findings confirmed that GRB 221009A was indeed the BOAT, appearing especially bright because its narrow jet was pointing directly at Earth. But the various analyses also yielded several surprising results that puzzled astronomers. Most notably, a supernova should have occurred a few weeks after the initial burst, but astronomers didn't detect one, perhaps because it was very faint, and thick dust clouds in that part of the sky were dimming any incoming light.

Swift’s X-ray Telescope captured the afterglow of GRB 221009A about an hour after it was first detected.

That's why Peter Blanchard of Northwestern University and his fellow co-authors decided to wait six months before undertaking their own analysis, relying on data collected during the GRB's later phase by the Webb Space Telescope's Near Infrared Spectrograph. They augmented that spectral data with observations from ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array) in Chile so they could separate light from the supernova and the GRB afterglow. The most significant finding was the telltale signatures of key elements like calcium and oxygen that one would expect to find with a supernova.

Yet the supernova wasn't brighter than other supernovae associated with less energetic GRBs, which is puzzling. "You might expect that the same collapsing star producing a very energetic and bright GRB would also produce a very energetic and bright supernova," said Blanchard . "But it turns out that's not the case. We have this extremely luminous GRB, but a normal supernova.” The authors suggest that this might have something to do with the shape and structure of the relativistic jet, which was much narrower than other GRB jets, resulting in a more focused and brighter beam of light.

The data held another surprise for astronomers. The only confirmed source of heavy elements in the universe to date is the merging of binary neutron stars. But per Blanchard, there are far too few neutron star mergers to account for the abundance of heavy elements, so there must be another source. One hypothetical additional source is a rapidly spinning massive star that collapses and explodes into a supernova. Alas, there was no evidence of heavy elements in the JWST spectral data regarding the BOAT.

“When we confirmed that the GRB was generated by the collapse of a massive star, that gave us the opportunity to test a hypothesis for how some of the heaviest elements in the universe are formed,” said Blanchard . “We did not see signatures of these heavy elements, suggesting that extremely energetic GRBs like the BOAT do not produce these elements. That doesn’t mean that all GRBs do not produce them, but it’s a key piece of information as we continue to understand where these heavy elements come from. Future observations with JWST will determine if the BOAT’s ‘normal’ cousins produce these elements.”

The Coast Guard suspended its active search a second time for a missing boater Wednesday at 8:15 p.m. off the coast of North Carolina.

Jeffrey Kale, 47, from Clover, South Carolina, was last seen around 4 p.m. on Saturday. He was reported overdue from a fishing trip around 10:30 p.m. on April 6. Kale initially launched his 32-foot Cape Horn boat from Southport Wildlife Boat Ramp in Brunswick County, according to Lt. Carl Hendrickson with the U.S. Coast Guard North Carolina Sector.

Previous coverage: Coast Guard renews search for missing boater after vessel found off Wrightsville Beach

On Tuesday, Kale's vessel was discovered by another mariner, traveling northeast at approximately six miles an hour, 83 miles east of the Wrightsville Beach coast. No one was aboard the boat and there was no visible damage, according to a previous news release from the U.S. Coast Guard. The vessel was towed ashore, and investigators boarded.

That prompted officials to restart a search that had been suspended.

Rescue crews searched by air and by sea for approximately 100 combined hours since the initial missing person's report and covered more than 11,690 square miles, which is an area greater than the size of Maryland.

Crews involved included Navy assets, Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City HC-130 Hercules airplane, Coastal patrol boat USCGC Steelhead (WPB 87324) and multiple good Samaritan boaters.

“We offer our sincere condolences to the Kale family during this difficult time,” said Cmdr. Corrie Sergent, Sector North Carolina deputy commander. “Saving lives at sea drives our rescue crews to train and operate every single day with the hope to bring people home safely, which is why making the decision to suspend a search is truly one of the hardest things for our personnel to make and we do not take it lightly. We are grateful to the various Navy assets, commercial assistance, and multiple good Samaritans who have also assisted in the search.”

'She doesn't like to rock the boat': My mother will spend millions taking care of my aging stepfather. What can I do?

star yacht model boats

By Quentin Fottrell

'It has been stated that he is not leaving my mom anything and that all his money will go to his kids'

Dear Quentin,

We have a complicated family situation.

My dad passed away at age 50 and left a significant amount of money to cover many expenses for my family, including complete college educations, some annuity accounts, and plenty of money and investments so my mom wouldn't have to work and would be covered for a significant amount of time, possibly through retirement.

Two years after my dad's death, my mom married my stepdad, who is 10 years older. They each have four of their own kids, so eight kids total. We are cordial but have very little communication or relationship with our stepsiblings, just because we are all adults living in different places.

My mom has played a significant role in her husband's caretaking for many years, through several surgeries, and she will continue to provide a high level of care for the foreseeable future.

Keeping their finances separate

The positive aspect to this story is that when they got married, they decided to keep their finances separate to protect their respective family money. This is difficult, considering that between them, they own four properties - my mom owns three and my stepfather owns one - and they have made up their minds about specific bills that they are responsible for, like property taxes, utilities and repairs.

There is very little bookkeeping with this stuff, even though they both have a lot of money. My stepfather's kids know next to nothing about my mom's financial situation, such as how much she has and what the plan is for the future. We have heard a few comments that seem unfair and a bit concerning to us.

We feel that by having my mom around and providing much of his care, my stepfather will significantly reduce his costs as he ages. But with this arrangement, it seems like his family is going to be saving potentially millions of dollars on care for their dad, whereas my mom will be using our family money to take care of herself as she ages, using a significant portion of our family estate.

Putting a number on caretaking

It's hard to put a number on her caretaking, and that's certainly something married couples do out of the goodness of their hearts and love for each other. However, we believe he should also make sure that my mom is cared for equally well, financially speaking, when he is no longer around. Conversations with them have been difficult, because they are very tight-lipped.

It has been stated that he is not leaving my mom anything and that all his money will go to his kids. They have kept us in the dark regarding what the arrangements are and have not been forthcoming about the situation with their wills. My mom is very passive and does not confront him about a lot of things, and we have expressed concerns to her in the past only to be met with zero response, since she doesn't like to rock the boat.

It seems like he is protecting his estate while my mom would be using up much of hers over the next 20 to 30 years. When they got married, my mom stopped getting my dad's Social Security benefits, and my stepfather does not share his with my mom, so that is another significant amount of money that she has missed out on. They have been married for over 20 years.

Should we request a meeting with them - or with just her and their financial adviser - to discuss these issues?

Family Representative

Related: 'We've had our ups and downs': My late in-laws left their estate to me, my husband and our son. Do we need to hire an attorney?

Dear Family Representative,

Let's deal with the Social Security issue first. Your mother does not need her husband's permission to take Social Security based on his earnings, as long as they've been married for one continuous year. Whether or not your mother worked during her lifetime, she is entitled to collect up to 50% of the amount of her husband's Social Security benefits, or she can rely on her own benefits, whichever is greater. This doesn't mean she is actually dipping into his own benefits.

A person cannot receive spousal benefits until that spouse claims Social Security themselves. Because her husband is 10 years older than she is, that is likely not an issue for your mother. She must also be 62 years of age to claim, or have a child who is either under the age of 16 or already receiving Social Security. The amount she receives would also depend on whether her husband started claiming at 62, or whether he waited until his full retirement age or maxed out his benefits by waiting until age 70 to claim. (There may also be a case where she can apply for retroactive benefits for unreduced spousal benefits, but that would only be up to six months' worth.)

For example, if they have both reached at least full retirement age and her husband was due to receive $2,000 per month based on his work history, but your mother would only receive $800 based on her own, she would receive an additional $200 a month to bring her monthly payment to $1,000 - 50% of what your stepfather receives from Social Security. So they would bring in $3,000 collectively. Your mother could also claim her own benefits before her husband does, and then move to a higher payment when he claims.

Questions versus allegations

Your mother and stepfather and their children appear to be taking different approaches. Your mother and stepfather have made it clear that they are keeping their separate property apart from their marital property and not commingling those assets. You have received mixed signals about their financial lives: Your stepfather, according to unnamed sources, will not leave a dime to his wife, but you believe your mother will be on the hook for his medical care as he gets older.

There may be a conversation to be had between your mother and stepfather, ideally with the "gift" of counseling from a financial adviser - a certified financial planner or certified public accountant. Obviously, having a long-term-care policy would help alleviate any financial burden that lies ahead, particularly as the cost of nursing-home care can vary dramatically depending on the type of care, the state they live in and the individual institution, but can be as much as $125,000 a year. Medicare and most health-insurance plans do not pay for long-term care. Depending on their current age and health, it might be difficult or expensive to get a long-term-care policy now.

But I'm not convinced that descending upon them with your concerns or accusations will help. What you can do is offer professional assistance and ask questions. Do your stepfather and mother have long-term-care insurance? What funds do they have that would go toward paying for any care either of them may need in the future? There is an underlying assumption that your stepfather is going to drain your mother's bank accounts. Thus far, there is no evidence of that.

Tricky financial dynamics

You are clearly fearful about the status of your inheritance, and an information vacuum has been filled with a version of events that has not happened and may never happen. The lack of communication between you, your four stepsiblings and your three other siblings has led you to imagine a worst-case scenario. If your parents have vowed to keep their respective assets separate, it suggests that they may also have made contingency plans for if one or both fall ill.

There is a lot they can do to ensure that their estates go to their own children. They can put their assets in a revocable trust, which will become irrevocable upon their death. They can name their children as beneficiaries on their bank accounts, IRAs, 401(k)s and life-insurance policies so they avoid probate. They could set up transfer-on-death deeds so their respective properties immediately go to their children, thereby allowing them to avoid excessive capital-gains tax. And last but not least, there are postnuptial agreements and good old-fashioned wills.

There is another variable here, and that is the law in the state where your mother and stepfather reside. In many states, spouses have a legal requirement to support each other financially, and they may not be able to cut their spouse out of their will entirely. This is known as an elective share. Oftentimes, assets or wealth accumulated during the marriage are split 50/50.

Your stepfather is not the enemy. Your stepsiblings are not your enemies. Your financial fears are probably your biggest enemy in this tricky family dynamic.

Maui’s west-side commercial boating operators are getting some relief from the business impacts of the Maui wildfires with the state’s decision to lift temporary restrictions at Mala Wharf and its announcement that the rebuilding of a fueling system is underway at Lahaina Small Boat Harbor.

The state Department of Health also declared Thursday that the coastal waters around Lahaina are safe for ocean recreation, which is likely to validate use for offshore recreational and commercial users as well as recreational and commercial boats.

DOH said it came to its conclusion after reviewing test results from multiple monitoring activities including state agencies and community partners, among them the University of Hawaii, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Surfrider Foundation.

Deputy Director for Environmental Health Kathleen Ho said in a statement, “These results provide the community with reassurance that the coastal waters around Lahaina are safe for ocean recreation with no significant human health impacts as a result of the wildfires. We continue to advise residents to heed brown water advisories, as bacteriological quality remains a concern at all times in brown water conditions. DOH appreciates the collaboration and partnership of our community partners and DLNR in monitoring environmental quality in Lahaina.”

DOH said it will continue to monitor coastal environmental quality in Lahaina along with its partners, and reminded the public that access at certain coastal zones in Lahaina still are not open for ocean recreation.

Lahaina Small Boat Harbor sustained $30 million worth of damage in the Aug. 8 Maui wildfires, and its destruction continues to affect recreational users as well as Maui’s activities and attractions market, which is struggling to recover.

The U.S. Coast Guard completed the salvage of all Lahaina Harbor vessels in December, and the state has begun addressing its checklist to safely reopen Lahaina Harbor, which could require dredging.

The fuel system vendor for Lahaina Small Boat Harbor, Pacific Fuels, is rebuilding the fire-damaged, above-ground portion of the fueling system at no cost to the state.

DLNR said the fueling system restoration, which is targeted for completion May 18, at popular Lahaina Harbor is the first of many projects to fully restore the harbor to full operations.

Finn McCall, a DLNR Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation engineer, said in a statement, “Probably until it’s fully restored, you know, we’re estimating maybe about three years.”

Heidi Speedie, operations manager of Kolea Charters, which had operated Reefdancer, a semi-sub destroyed in Lahaina Harbor, said the DOH ruling is important for members of the West Maui commercial boating fleet.

She said more convenient access to fuel also is important, especially for the operators, whose boats are too large to fill up at gas stations, and have had to take fuel to their boats via skiffs.

“It will help the boats that already exist in Kaanapali and Mala, but it can’t help a Lahaina Harbor boat like mine,” she said. “You can fill up your boat, but you’ll never use your fuel if you can’t put a passenger on the boat. It’s only good for people that are able to do business.”

Speedie said Mala Wharf commercial boaters also will get some grace Saturday when DLNR allows them to return to Mala Wharf seven days a week, instead of banning holiday and weekend use.

“It’s just too bad that they couldn’t have reopened in time for whale watching season, which starts in mid- December and is finished before mid-May,” Speedie said. “Whale watching season for commercial boaters is like the end-of-the-year holiday season is for retailers. We had lots of bad weather this year, so between the holiday and weekend restrictions, operators were seeing weekly cuts to business ranging from 25% to 50%.”

DLNR said it began restricting access for many reasons to commercial boats on weekends when Mala Wharf reopened in October. Those reasons included “the absence of a Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR) office in West Maui; the lack of operational restrooms; potential health risks from exposure to contaminants in the ocean, and the unsafe conditions of nearshore waters due to debris from the August 2023 wildfires. Concerned Lahaina residents also indicated they wanted commercial operations restricted.”

Kekai Keahi, whose grandmother’s house is about 150 to 200 yards from the ramp at Mala Wharf, called DLNR/DOBOR’s reversal “devastating.”

He said the community already had made clear to DLNR/DOBOR that commercial use at Mala Wharf should not be allowed before undergoing a Ka Pa‘akai analysis, which provides a framework for assessing impacts to Native Hawaiian constitutionally protected rights. He contends that such an analysis would not uphold commercial use.

“My dad (Moke Keahi) and people of his generation was the ones that led that fight to build (Mala Wharf). It wasn’t the state; it was the people here who was pushed out of Lahaina harbor who couldn’t even go fishing anymore. It was their ocean, their fight.

“It’s just a small little ramp, not even a harbor. For them to fight so hard just to give us a place to go so we can subsist, to be run over by tourism again is history repeating itself. If my generation doesn’t do something about it now, then my boy’s generation is going to suffer real bad.”

It’s unclear whether the full restoration of Mala Wharf operating hours will stick.

DLNR said an attorney for two commercial operators had requested that the Mala Wharf restriction be lifted, and in a response letter DLNR Chair Dawn Chang advised, “Please be aware that we are currently working on amending DOBOR administrative rules to implement commercial activity prohibitions on weekends and holidays at Mala Wharf and other boating facilities, similar to the Kaneohe Bay restrictions on Oahu.”

Kekai Keahi said, “When I see it I’ll believe it.”
