  • frazierb2024 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to learn about the "Old-Time Charm" of Savannah in a relaxed way. Highly recommend this riverboat tour to see Savannah from the water! You will learn about the action of the Savannah port and also about the military forts surrounding Savannah and the city's role in the Civil War. Definitely recommend if you are a huge history buff! My mom and I loved the old-school charm of the actual Riverboat and we had a gorgeous weather day, so we really enjoy sitting on the top deck and getting to see the scenery and wildlife around us. The narrator of the boat tour is an aspiring actor in Savannah, so he was extremely entertaining with his story telling and history narration about the city and even kept it light with a few jokes and pop-culture tidbits! I highly recommend this for anyone looking for a sit back and relax activity, while you also learn a ton! Plus, there is a great concessions stand on the boat where you can order drinks and food from. You may even see some beautiful wildlife too while on the boat as dolphins are a popular sight in the river! There is a live cannon blast as the boat passes Old Fort Jackson down the river, so make sure to bring ear-plugs if you are sensitive to that. The tour guide gave us plenty of warning before it happened, but it still caught us off guard. Another thing to note is to get in line earlier rather than later for the boat ride because the seating is first come, first serve, and they have backward facing seats if you want to avoid those. Although, the boat is moving at a pace that isn't upsetting for people prone to motion-sickness (aka my mom!). Read more Written 25 February 2024
  • 642sasha 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Skip the Valentine’s Day cruise I took the Valentine’s Day cruise which was overpriced. It was $143 with tax per person. The service should have been better based on that price. I requested vinaigrette dressing for my salad because they did not put any dressing on the salad. The waitress ignored me and I asked her several times. It seemed like such a simple request, but apparently it wasn’t. The food was average not worth more than $20. The entertainment was mediocre. I would not recommend anyone to pay for the Valentines Day cruise. The views at night was the best part of this cruise. Read more Written 19 February 2024

Enjoyed being on the water, but the narration was difficult to hear. As other reviewers stated, the views are primarily industrial. Other river traffic is interesting to see, but not a scenic nature cruise. Read more Written 10 February 2024
  • taber 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointing Cruise Very disappointing experience. A waste of money. We thought we were going of a paddle wheeler boat but it wasn't, there was no paddle wheel. There were only 2 speakers on the main deck of the boat so we could not hear the commentary. There wasn't really anything to look at while you sat on the boat. The windows were dirty. We did pass by a fort but could not hear any information about it. Read more Written 3 February 2024
  • lg2bizzy4u 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Weekend Family Dinner Cruise Seven family members and I took did the Riverboat Cruise. We had a fabulous time. I recommend the cruise for family gatherings. The food was good and our server was exceptionally nice. The one thing that I truly appreciated was the people at the buffet served the food to the customer. I love the safety steps they are doing to prevent the spread of viruses. I suggest when you book your dinner cruise that you request window seats. Read more Written 7 January 2024
  • JacqWilliams 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointed Vegan My husband and I were excited to attend the New Year's Eve Gala Cruise on the Georgia Queen Riverboat. As a vegan, I called in advance to ensure that I would have meal options. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the limited options provided during the event. Despite being told that the staff would be able to accommodate my dietary restrictions, I was only able to eat two of the courses which were both salads and the main meal was a spoonful of overcooked quinoa over asparagus which looked like a plate of slop, see picture below. This made me feel singled out as an outcast. Considering the high price of the tickets, I feel that the advertisements should clearly state if there are no vegan options or there should be a price adjustment. Paying $250 for a plate of iceberg lettuce and strawberries is unfair. I believe that a refund or some other type of accommodation is deserved in this situation. I must say that the staff serving the food were all very nice and should be applauded. Read more Written 4 January 2024

  • MontanaEjp 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Do not recommend this overpriced cruise with little to learn Not worth the money! Do NOT recommend. We purchased tickets assuming it was an amazing cruise because we have always seen the ship docked on the river. Pros: We saw quite a few dolphins, a bald eagle flying overhead, it was a beautiful day to spend some time outside. The narrator was funnier toward the end. Cons: Very expensive to see docked ships and not really much else. Savannah is full of rich history and the stories, information, or facts that was shared was minimal. Such a shame. But if the tour has to pair with what you see around the ship, it makes sense. Nothing to see aside from some ships and tug boats and the River front. Narration was boring. I couldn’t hear half of it depending on where you were standing on the top deck. It was clear as day if you were inside but who wants to sit inside on a beautiful day? I wish I had read the reviews instead of assuming it was wonderful! Read more Written 1 January 2024
  • Voyage690733 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Not impressed! We did the New Year's Eve Party cruise. The experience was mediocre, live music provided was okay. The dance floor was busy, even crowded at points. I think most people had a okay time. The food however was not up to par, and serviced buffet style. Bar service was horrible, people waited in line for a hour, for overpriced drinks. I personally wouldn't recommend and was not impressed to say the least. I think your money could be better spent elsewhere. There's so many nice restaurants and great things to experience here. Read more Written 1 January 2024

9 Best Brunch Places in Savannah

By Paul Oswell

Image may contain Restaurant Cafeteria Furniture Chair Cafe and Wood

Brunch can be an uninspiring affair, but luckily Savannah's thriving culinary scene means that there are plenty of options to get you out of your comfort zone. Its position as a world port means there's a wealth of international influences at play, from France to Cuba to Australia. Mix this with the solid, brunch-friendly traditions of Southern cooking and you've got a list of brunch spots with creative, original menu choices that take you well beyond your usual omelettes and Eggs Benedict. Here, our editor's picks for Savannah's best brunches—for when you're wondering where to start.

The Collins Quarter Savannah Restaurant

The Collins Quarter Arrow

As a port town, Savannah has a wealth of international influences that have permeated its dining scene, and one of the farthest flung is Collins Quarter, a modern, Melbourne -style cafe. Tall ceilings and large windows give the dining room a good amount of light during the day, when it functions as a bustling coffee shop and all-day brunch spot. At night it transforms into a candlelit brasserie. But the brekkie is what you're here for: a tasty breakfast sandwich with tangy bacon jam, bananas Foster French toast, and short rib hash.

Default

Fork & Dagger Arrow

Fork and Dagger Eatery, a 30-seat diner just a couple of blocks from Forsyth Park, has a distinct lack of pretension. Influences from New York City , Cuba, and the South combine into a comforting brunch menu that’s hard to beat. A firm favorite is the delectable Pig and Grits, home-made slow-cooked pork with creamy cheese grits topped with a perfect fried egg. The bagels are flown in from the Bronx, and the French toast drips with melted butter and maple syrup.

Image may contain Burger Food Cutlery Spoon Pottery Coffee Cup and Cup

Café M Arrow

Cafe M is in a plum location on the Savannah River, but you could almost imagine it's the Seine. Brunch is divided into three sections: Parisian, American, and Healthy. Parisian comes with the much-celebrated French bread and pastries, served with Bon Maman preserves. American consists of hot options like scrambled eggs with cheese, ham, turkey, and bacon. Healthy features smoked salmon on wheat toast and a bowl of granola. Most restaurants on the riverfront feel a little touristy, but this cafe retains local character, and the brunch options transport you to a lovely Gallic corner of the South.

Olde Pink House Savannah

Olde Pink House Restaurant Arrow

The Olde Pink House serves brunch Tuesday to Saturday. The menu eschews most breakfast dishes for lunchier options like crab beignets (with a tangy lemon sauce) and the spring rolls stuffed with shrimp, crab, and sausage. The mac 'n' cheese jalapeño poppers are a playful addition, as are the pulled pork sliders, and it’s hard not to order the signature dish, the legendary she crab soup. To drink, go for the Pink Lady, the restaurant's signature cocktail, which mixes sweet lemonade with raspberry-infused vodka.

Back in the Day Arrow

Despite its name, Back In The Day Bakery only dates back to 2002, but it has already established itself as a Savannah landmark . Owners Cheryl and Griff Day (the cafe's real namesake) are James Beard–nominated bakers beloved for their biscuits, which sell out quickly every day. Those buttermilk delights come topped with, say, baked egg and cheddar, ham and gruyere, or house-made jam. There's also a daily-changing selection of pies, cupcakes, muffins, and scones.

B. Matthew's Eatery Arrow

B. Matthews Eatery has all the hallmarks of a modern bistro, with exposed brick walls, dark wood, and striking modern art. The shrimp and grits are the real draw here; they're served with green onions, tasso ham, and red-eye gravy. The fried green tomato Benedict is also another welcome deviation from the classics, with the mixed greens and goat cheese on a homemade biscuit delivering a tangy bite. There are regular egg dishes, of course, but among the other standouts are the indulgent salmon avocado toast and the chicken salad sandwich with apples and pecans.

The Ordinary Pub Arrow

The Ordinary Pub is one of the more casual brunch spots in town, but it still feels like a culinary adventure. Dishes will pique the interest of even the most brunch-fatigued crowds. Be sure to order the pork belly donut sliders, a sweet and savory treat that combines sticky bread with slow-cooked pork and a tangy bacon-onion jam. The short rib naan and the salmon and crab bagel are also worth considering. For true decadence, go for the brunch mussels, sautéed in champagne and orange juice.

Image may contain Food Dish Meal and Burger

The Fitzroy Arrow

Industrial aesthetics can feel cliched nowadays, but The Fitzroy's dining room feels subtle and chic, and the ambience reflects a sense of elegance. The usual brunch suspects are joined by a spicy Moroccan scramble with merguez sausages, an Israeli shakshuka with chorizo and roasted potatoes, and an Australian ricotta hotcake with mascarpone and maple syrup. Other unusual options include chicken schnitzel, salmon croquettes, and a crab omelette.

Image may contain Restaurant Cafeteria Furniture Chair Cafe and Wood

Little Duck Diner Arrow

There’s plenty of foot traffic around this busy downtown spot, a large, imposing building on Saint Julian Street that gives way to an inarguably retro scene as you enter the vintage style Little Duck Diner. This is a comforting menu with some pleasing, adventurous options. There are waffles, pancakes, and a comprehensive selection of egg dishes. The vaunted gourmet grilled cheese menu is the big draw, though; gruyere, duck, caramelized onions, and Norwegian smoked salmon are all optional tweaks to this American classic.

When in the South, brunch is not only popular but quite possibly a requirement. After a night out in Savannah, nothing compares to sitting at brunch overlooking the squares with water, coffee, and a bloody mary. While tourists and locals descend on Savannah for its history and beauty, the culinary experience is starting to become the main event rather than an afterthought. Here’s where to brunch in Savannah.

Rhett is housed on the ground floor in the upscale Alida Hotel. Rhett’s brunch is offered Monday to Sunday in case brunching on the weekend just isn’t enough. Menu items range from classics like the shrimp and grits to the over-the-top Rhett burger. Bellini and mimosa brunch cocktails are available in addition to the new bloody mary bar with six available variations for those looking to spice up their morning.

Myrtle & Rose

Located on the top of the 3 Muses hotel within the Plant Riverside District, this rooftop restaurant has a view of the Savannah river and Talmadge bridge. Jazz brunch starts with fancy cocktails and champagne. The Myrtle Benedict consisting of smoked salmon, poached egg with garlic spinach, and hollandaise, will help soak up all those brunch drinks.

Husk Savannah

The eye-opener drinks welcome morning brunch goers with either a Husk mimosa or a Husk bloody mary, which includes 22 ingredients, bringing a new meaning to a liquid diet. Traditionally Southern, locally sourced menu items dominate the brunch menu, like the shrimp and grits and hot fried chicken. Husk Savannah offers outdoor dining options looking over the old oak trees in Savannah.

Located at the end of the Savannah Historic District in the Thompson Hotel, Fleeting Restaurant adds lighter brunch options to the area. Specialty coffee and tea drinks compliment the summer vegetable bowl and the pineapple and berry salad. Both hotel guests and locals enjoy this recently opened restaurant.

Collins Quarter at Forsyth

Looking over Forsyth Park, Collins Quarter on Forsyth is only open for brunch or lunch. The spiced lavender mocha will satisfy any caffeine craving, while “mushies” on toast consisting of chevre, wild mushrooms, and kale pistou kickstart the morning. Yes, a full bar is available for those who want to sit at the tables, with a drink in hand, to watch the most visited park in Savannah come alive.

Hop Atomica

With a DJ spinning vinyl on the first Sunday of every month, Hop Atomica brings the brunch dance party to the neighborhood. Along with the regular menu, Hop Atomic adds brunch pizza, waffles, and lox bagel with additional rotating dishes. Craft beer and craft cocktails extend the brunch hours into the evening.

Savannah plans a supersized 200th anniversary celebration of its beloved St. Patrick's Day parade

Savannah, Georgia's oldest city, is planning a supersized celebration as it marks the 200th anniversary of its beloved St. Patrick's Day parade

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- There was no green beer, no pickup trucks towing parade floats or throngs of tourists in gaudy green outfits. Instead, just a few dozen of Savannah's early Irish immigrants marched a half-mile from a hotel near the riverfront to attend a special service at what then was the city's only Roman Catholic church.

That modest procession on March 17, 1824, launched one of the most beloved — and profitable — traditions in Savannah. On Saturday, Georgia's oldest city will celebrate the 200th anniversary of its St. Patrick's Day parade, which has grown over time into one of America's largest. Thousands of revelers are expected to cram sidewalks and squares along the parade route through Savannah's downtown historic district.

More than 18,000 hotel rooms in Savannah and surrounding Chatham County are nearly sold out for the weekend. The parade lineup is bursting with at least 230 pipe-and-drum bands, chauffeur-driven dignitaries, marching military units and shamrock-decorated floats. Downtown bars have stocked up on extra kegs of beer, and the city has rented more than 320 portable toilets for those imbibing.

“We’re expecting historic crowds from visitors and residents alike,” said Savannah City Manager Jay Melder.

Over the past two centuries, St. Patrick's Day in Savannah has morphed into perhaps the South's biggest street party between Mardi Gras in New Orleans and Florida's raucous spring break.

It's a far cry from how Savannah's celebration began.

Founded as a nondenominational charity to assist poor Irish immigrants, the Hibernian Society of Savannah had an important day planned on March 17, 1824. The group invited Bishop John England, an Irish native appointed to lead the newly formed Diocese of Charleston, South Carolina, to come to Savannah and speak at the city's Roman Catholic church.

The Hibernians hosted England on St. Patrick's Day during their morning meeting at the City Hotel near the bluff overlooking the Savannah River. Then they marched in procession, accompanied by a band and a flag-bearer whose banner was decorated with a symbolic Irish harp and shamrocks, to hear the bishop speak at noon at St. John the Baptist Church.

“May the example of Savannah be widely influential,” the bishop told an audience of both Catholics and Protestants inside the packed church while a crowd of onlookers stood outside in the rain, the Savannah Republican newspaper reported. “Here men who differ in religion may meet as friends and brethren.”

Afterward, the Irish society marched back to the hotel, where the bishop joined about 80 members for an evening banquet marked by a steady stream of toasts, said Howard Keeley, director of the Center for Irish Research and Teaching at Georgia Southern University.

“They partied the night away, apparently,” said Keeley, who studies the history of Irish immigrants in Georgia. “It was a big celebration. The Hibernians had always had these celebrations since their founding in 1812. This one was just kind of amped up by the presence of the bishop.”

Like even older St. Patrick's Day parades in New York and Boston, Savannah's parade is likely rooted in military units celebrating the holiday during the American Revolution, Keeley said. He noted there are accounts of Irish-born soldiers marching on St. Patrick's Day while serving under George Washington.

Savannah's celebration grew along with its Irish population. Laborers from Ireland settled in the Southern port city in the 1830s to help build railroads and canals. In the 1840s, the potato famine in Ireland drove as many as 2 million immigrants to U.S. shores, causing Savannah's Irish-born population to double, Keeley said.

In the decades following the Civil War, Savannah's holiday started showing glimmers of the more commercially driven celebrations to come.

Local clothing stores stocked green neckties and gloves by 1875, according to “The Days We've Celebrated,” a history of St. Patrick's Day festivities in Savannah by the late William L. Fogarty, who served as the parade's 1986 grand marshal.

And following the 1888 celebration, a newspaper reported that Savannah officials had ordered businesses to close for a day because "the city is agitated by Sunday cocktails.”

Even by the 1960s, Savannah's parade had yet to become a full-blown tourism dynamo.

Tim Mahoney, chairman of the parade's organizing committee, recalled that when his father held the same post in 1969, the parade got planned “on somebody's dining room table” and was pulled together from high school bands, locally based military units and Savannah's Irish families.

“They had no money; they had no resources,” Mahoney said. "But in true Irish leadership fashion they just rolled up their sleeves and said, `Heck, we’re going to make this parade happen.'”

Though some may refer to this year's celebration as Savannah's 200th parade, that's incorrect. The coronavirus pandemic caused City Hall to cancel St. Patrick's Day parades in 2020 and 2021, and there were several prior years in which Savannah went without a parade — including during the Civil War, World War I and the Irish Revolution in 1921.

The 200th anniversary parade is being held a day early, on Saturday, in keeping with another longstanding Savannah tradition. Whenever the March 17 holiday falls on a Sunday, organizers move the parade to Saturday to avoid disrupting church services.

Officials expect visitors to arrive even sooner and start celebrating in earnest Thursday. They'll find park fountains gushing with green-dyed water. Several downtown buildings including City Hall and the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist are temporarily glowing green at night thanks to special lighting.

What would the forefathers of Savannah's celebration think?

“They would be blown away," Mahoney said.

LIVE UPDATES

They had a wheel-y good time.

The Wheel Skate Club came out in full force, dressed in roller skates, knee pads, helmets and matching green ties to celebrate the occasion. A mix of new and returning Savannahians, they are excited to partake in the festivities, with some members of the group waking up as early as 3 a.m. to attend the parade.

Aislynn Tierney’s favorite St. Patrick’s day tradition?

“Rollerskating downtown for sure,” she said. “They close all the streets to traffic, it’s the best part.”

'Everywhere I take the bagpipes, it seems to bring people joy'

Nathan Nightingale has been playing the bagpipes for more than 20 years and has been attending St. Pat’s since 2018 at his wife’s encouragement.

His wife has been coming to the parade for over 20+ years and encouraged Nightingale to get involved to have a good experience with good people.

“Everywhere I take the bagpipes, it seems to bring people joy, whether it’s St. Patrick's Day or just out and about,” Nightingale said. “They’re unique and I think they just draw a bit of attention.”

Carry in and carry out

'storming the beaches'.

Austin Amick, in green shirt, of Savannah hit the jackpot when he nabbed spaces in Chippewa Square for three tents. “We were here at 5:45 then stormed the beaches” at 6 a.m. when parade-goers were allowed to move into the square. He and his friends have staked out the same spot for 10 years, when they were students at the University of Georgia. “We used to ask our professors to let us miss exams so we could come to the parade,” he said. “Most of the time they would when they heard we were from Savannah.”

Lauren Rockwell, a Savannah College of Art and Design student from New York City, tries her hand at beer pong. Rockwell and about a dozen friends were set up in Chippewa Square.

Happy Birthday, John!

John Pulte, in black shirt, spent his 40th birthday with friends in Lafayette Square. He arrived at 3:45 a.m. to put his folded tent and chairs near the curb in preparation for the 6 a.m. “rush” to claim space in the square. “It actually works pretty well,’ he said “People work together and are like, “which spot do you want? I want that one.’” He said he sees some of the same people every year.

'ello, Guv-nah!

An interminable wait, a few unhappy car owners receive heft fines for parking in parade zone.

About 50 downtown denizens and parade-goers had their cars towed after the 12:01 a.m. March 16 deadline, according to a City of Savannah spokesperson.

Although that number is down from priori festivals, it remains a costly infraction. Car owners will be charged $250, plus another $45 per day for storage after 24 hours. After 72 hours, a one-time $85 administration fee will be levied.

All fees will be paid to the towing company, but drivers must obtain a vehicle release from Savannah Police at 602 E. Lathrop Ave. Proof of ownership is required.

'We're praying for a safe and secure festival, period'

Savannah Police Chief Lenny Gunther said there has been one incident he is aware of so far this year, a hit-and-run on Bay Street last night. Savannah Police arrested the individual allegedly responsible for the incident, Gunther said. He said 275 to 300 SPD officers are working the parade.

“We’re praying for a safe and secure festival, period,” said Gunther. “Our focus is to make sure everyone is safe and has a good time. Hopefully it stays like that.”

Savannah Fire Chief Elzie Kitchen said he isn't aware of any incidents. He said SFD’s shift yesterday lasted until 2 a.m. “The plan for today is to have a parade presence, to have units staged throughout the festival zone, and then we’ll transition to a larger footprint to handle the crowd downtown,” said Kitchen, who said SFD has 98 firefighters on-duty, 22 of whom are on special detail to cover the festival. “We were expecting a larger crowd so we added a couple more units to maintain the safety,” said Kitchen.

The Mahoneys' St. Patrick's Day lineage

Kathleen Taylor (nee Mahoney) poses with a photo of her father and former St. Patrick's Parade Grand Marshal Tom Mahoney. Family member Molly Mahoney (right) said the family has been coming to the parade and securing their spot in front of the median on Oglethorpe Avenue for the last 35 years.Taylor’s son, a freshman at Benedictine Military School, will be carrying the banner at front of the parade and her brother, Tim Mahoney, is chairman of the parade committee.

Three-month old Arlo Rue Horsley is ready for her first St. Patrick’s Day after spending 76 days in the Memorial Health University Medical Center NICU unit. She was born three months early. “She was going to attend this parade!” said her mom, Emily Horsley. Also celebrating in Madison Square are Arlo’s dad, Mick Horsley, and great-grandparents Nancy and Bob Calisti from Pittsburgh, who are attending their first Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

A story of rebels and their bikes

Longtime Savannahians Kevin and Sharon Browning have been coming to the parade most of their lives, but in the last 4 to 5 years, they decided to deck out their bikes and avoid the traffic coming from their Midtown neighborhood.

For the whole family

St. patrick's day wake-up call, aka bagpipes.

Grace Thompson's favorite St. Patrick’s Day tradition is the cacophony of bagpipes coming from her dad’s speaker every year at 6 a.m. They didn’t get a chance to do it this year because of friends visiting, but she’s grown to love it over the course of 24 years.Born and raised in Savannah, her family has been coming to the parade for as long as she can remember.

'I love this city. Born and raised, never moved, never will.'

After 60 years of camping out in preparation for the parade, Donna Shepherd decided it was time for a change.“My spot has always been East Broad, and I was there for like 30-something years,” she said. “And then I got tired of sleeping in the median so we found a spot on Bay. Then last year we were like, ‘Okay, we need a house.’”Shepherd, along with her friends and family, were able to watch the parade from a porch on East Bay Street.“We’ve been here since Thursday and it’s been incredible,” she said. “We have stayed on the porch watching everybody go by every night.”“I love this city. Born and raised, never moved, never will move.”

'People are really proud to be Irish'

Jon Conway of the Guard Pipes and Drums band has been a bagpiper for 19 years. A police officer in Morris County, New Jersey, Conway said this was the first year he was able to travel to Savannah for the parade. His grandparents are from Ireland and spoke to how the culture’s charismatic view of humanity brings people together.“People are really proud to be Irish,” said Conway. “It’s the camaraderie. People can relate to each other. Everyone is Irish today.”

Smile and say, 'Lucky Charms!'

Savannah bishops lead the recessional.

Mass let out at around 9:30 a.m. at The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist. Savannah Diocese Bishop Stephen Parkes and Former Bishop Kevin Boland lead the procession out of the church doors.

They came all the way from Ireland

Eoin Gibson and his wife Erica came to visit the hostess city for the first time — all the way from Ireland — to experience a Savannah St. Patrick’s Day.Gibson was wearing a tartan kilt representing the Cannons, his family’s clan back in Ireland. He and the rest of his group with the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick will be marching in the parade later today.“We have a giant Irish flag that today we’ll be carrying,” Gibson said.As for his favorite St. Patrick’s day tradition?“We have a big party and make a Guinness Irish stew,” he said. “And about 40 or 50 people come round to the house.”

Who traveled the farthest to celebrate St. Patrick's Day Savannah-style?

Traveling over 700 miles from Philadelphia, Emily Russell and her family are attending their first St. Patrick’s parade in Savannah. After hearing tales from extended family for years, they decided if they were going to they had to go all-in.It was also the perfect opportunity to see their grandfather, Patrick, who is turning 80-years-old tomorrow on St. Patrick’s day.

What's the craziest thing you've ever seen during savannah's st. patrick's day parade.

In his 45 years of attending Savannah’s St. Patrick’s Day parade, Aubrey Matthew said the craziest thing he’s ever seen is a whole port-a-potty being thrown into the river with someone inside.Activities like that rarely happen these days, he said with all the rules that have slowly fallen into place over the course of the 200-year tradition. He still enjoys the parade, which his family has been attending for generations. This year was the earliest they’ve ever set up, putting tape around their area five days in advance.

“The whole experience is probably one of my favorite times of the whole year,” Matthew said.

Four decades of gathering for St. Patrick's Day with the Connors and Smith families

Four generations of the Savannah Connors and Smith families have been gathering for the Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Parade for over 40 years. Bret Connors said the group’s numbers have grown over the years with grandchildren and friends many from Savannah or visiting from Atlanta.Connors (center) posed with his fellow early birds who put together their three tent setup along Abercorn Street early this morning.

Some families have marched in the parade for 40 years

For nearly four decades, the Coleman and Shearhouse family has marched in the St. Patty’s Day Parade. It’s an emotional day for Joe Shearhouse as he recollects riding horses in the parade as a youngster. Now, he watches his children, nieces and nephews, ride the family float. The banner has been in the family for decades. His great grandfather, Joseph T. Coleman, served as Grand Marshall in 1982.“It’s about family,” said Shearhouse. “It’s about our kids. It’s about how much they enjoy the celebration of their heritage and where they are from. We try to teach the kids that they are not just Irish. They are part of a culture, whether it be the Catholic Church or the community.”

Family traditions: Multiple generations of Fogarty clan to walk in the 200th Savannah St. Patrick's Day Parade

It’s all hands on deck for Fogarty family members, who are getting their float prepped before they line up for the parade. The name Fogarty is a household name in Savannah's Irish community.John J. Fogarty was Grand Marshall in 1950 and William Fogarty held the same title in 1986. William’s son, Tim Fogarty, and his family are keeping the tradition alive by walking in the parade as they have done for decades.“This parade has so many families, such a long history in Savannah,” said Tim. “It’s about faith, family and friendship. It’s a way to get away from the bad stuff. Everyone is here to enjoy it. It’s like bringing one big family together.”

Mad dash at Lafayette Square, 6 a.m.

Just over 300 people were stationed around Lafayette Square by 5:30 a.m., positioning to set up tents and tables. The crowd counted down from 30 seconds, and at 6 a.m. people dashed into the square. Within five minutes, the entire vista of the square transformed, with tents and a flurry of people filling the space.

A few Savannah leaders stood at the Lafayette Square fountain for the countdown. Among them: City Manager Jay Melder, Assistant City Manager Heath Lloyd, and Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce President Bert Brantley.

Even if you can't make it in person, there's still an option to watch some of the most popular parades happening around the country. Here's how to watch.
