BVI Yachting Season

A good destination year-around except for hurricane season which runs from June to end of November. High season for a BVI yacht charter is from mid-December to the end of April.

The Virgin Islands are in a state of constant summer, with ideal weather and temperatures all year long. With very little change in seasons, you can rent a yacht in the islands virtually year-round and still expect sunshine, warm temperatures, and cooling breezes.

• Summer (June to November): It’s hot with an average temperature around 89ºF and the sea is around 82ºF. It can be humid with unstable weather as it’s tropical storm/hurricane season. Winds are southeasterly between 10 and 20 knots.

• Winter (December to May): You’ll find daily average temperature around 86ºF, but it’s cooler at night around 68ºF. The seas are warm around 78ºF and the weather is stable. Winds are easterly and northeasterly between 15 and 25 knots.

BVI Crewed Motor Yacht Charters

Motor yachts are the most popular choice for BVI boat charters, and there is an extensive selection of motor yachts for hire, from tri-deck superyachts, to smaller pilothouse motor yachts.

Motor yachts offer several advantages over sailing yachts. Speed is a key benefit; since you aren’t relying on wind, you can typically access more stops during your trip. Additionally, motor yachts tend to be the most luxurious and spacious available. That means more onboard amenities (e.g. hot tubs, swim platforms, skylounges), as well as more privacy.

BVI Catamaran Charters

The British Virgin Islands are an incredible destination for a catamaran charter , and as such, guests will find a wide variety of catamarans – both sailing and power cats – for charter in the BVI.

British Virgin Islands catamarans offer several advantages over traditional monohull sailing and motor yachts. Catamarans, for example, tend to be more stable with very little heel. This makes them a favorite choice for those who experience seasickness, families, and larger groups. Plus, catamarans tend to have more spacious interiors and wider decks.

BVI Crewed Sailing Yacht Charters

Many factors make the British Virgin Islands one of the best destinations for sailing charters. For one, the cruising conditions are ideal: Steady 10- to 20-knot winds year-round, which pick up around Christmas; calm, relaxed seas with low tidal ranges; and easy, line-of-sight sailing.

A key advantage of a BVI sailing charter is the experience. Sailing on the open water is an exhilarating adventure. There’s really nothing like sailing from island to island in the British Virgin Islands.

BVI Area Guide

Your private crewed yacht charter in the Virgin Islands will start in one of these two ports:

St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands

The main yachting hub of the US Virgin Islands with a beautiful historic downtown Charlotte Amalie. Many BVI crewed yacht charters start and end in St Thomas because of the ease of traveling to St Thomas. There are many direct flights to St Thomas from the continental US and Europe.

Tortola in the British Virgin Islands

The largest island of the BVI, Tortola’s landscape is a mix of tropical greenery, mountains, and white sandy beaches. Apple Bay offers the best waves for surfing, while Elizabeth Beach is ideal for a relaxing day of sunbathing. Tortola’s main town is Road Town and here you can find sites and landmarks to see that range from historical to artistic to delicious.

A wonderful retreat for the entire family, the BVI are hailed a “sailor’s paradise”, the perfect destination for private boat rentals. With our six reasons for a yacht charter in these Caribbean islands listed below, you’ll soon see why guests fall for them hook, line, and sinker.

BVI yacht charters are the best way to explore 60 islands and islets

The BVI consist of sixty islands, which are some of the most elite in the world. The islands offer exclusivity and a wonderful untouched feel. That’s why the locals have nicknamed these islands “Nature’s Little Secrets.”

Find Pristine Sandy Beaches at Every Turn

With a picturesque cove and beach around every corner, there’s ample opportunity to find a little bit of what you fancy, whether it’s seclusion or a more upbeat atmosphere.

You’ll never find huge resorts and tourists fighting over space, and every charter guest enjoys feeling as though they’re the first person to ever discover some of the more secluded beaches.

A yachting vacation allows you to find the beach of your dreams and then turn right around to find another, one that will likely go beyond your imagination with its beauty!

BVI Yacht Charters Let You Dive into Unbeatable Waters

With crystal clear waters, underground trails, and an abundance of sea life, the BVI are one of the most esteemed snorkeling and scuba diving locations across the globe. With stunning reef fish located not far from the coastline, you can dive straight off your boat with your snorkel.

Or, get a bit more adventurous with a scuba diving class where you’ll see extraordinary shipwrecks, underwater tunnels and caves, healthy reefs of coral, huge grottoes and boulders, and plenty of underwater life.

A Plethora of Water Sports on Your Charter

From your BVI yacht rental, you can also enjoy the range of water sports the islands have to offer. From surfing and windsurfing to kayaking and fishing, there’s something for everyone, regardless of whether you’re a novice or an expert.

Friendly Locals in the BVI

When you’re chartering around the islands, you needn’t worry about finding somewhere tourist-friendly to stop off at, because every port, no matter how secluded, welcomes charter guests with open arms. With such a relaxing, laid-back atmosphere on each island, the locals make the whole experience of the BVI even more heartwarming and memorable.

A Full Moon party has a whole new meaning in the BVI

Every month, Trellis Bay on Beef Island holds a Full Moon Party, and if you’re sailing on one of these dates, you’ll definitely want to attend.

Vendors line the beach selling arts and crafts, local restaurants offer spectacular buffets and BBQs, and partygoers enjoy live shows and live calypso music. Then, at midnight when the party’s in full swing, a giant fireball is lit in Trellis Bay.

How much does it cost to charter a yacht in the British Virgin Islands?

Many factors affect charter rates in the BVI, including the type of vessel, the number of guests, and the time of year you plan to visit.

In general, the majority of sailing yachts in the BVI use all-inclusive rates ; sailing yachts typically range from $20,000 to $40,000 per week. Motor yachts, on the other hand, use “plus expenses” rates. This means guests pay a weekly rate – which starts at roughly $40,000 – as well as any expenses, including fuel, dockage costs, taxes and other expenses.

One of the most significant factors affecting charter rates is the season. New Year’s and Christmas are prime charter seasons in the BVI, and as such, guests can expect to see a 10-15% premium in costs.

Do charters start in St Thomas or Tortola?

St. Thomas (U.S.) is just 15 nautical miles from Tortola, which makes St. Thomas a popular launching point for BVI yacht charters. Depending on which yacht you charter, your vacation may launch from St. Thomas or Tortola. Consult with your broker to learn more about where your preferred yacht is located. Ultimately, St. Thomas and nearby St. John are ideal stops on a BVI yacht charter. Both islands offer their own unique sights and attractions, and many BVI charters will stop at one or both of these U.S. islands.

What day of the week can I start my charter?

You can start your charter on any day of the week. Your charter itinerary is personalized to your needs, and can be adjusted to whichever day is most convenient to you.

Your charter broker will help you design your ideal BVI itinerary.

Are cruising taxes included in the charter fee?

It depends. Some boats include cruising taxes in their rates, while others add these fees on. Your charter broker will help you understand the exact fee structure before your charter begins.

In the British Virgin Islands, cruising taxes are charged to charter yachts, which includes a $50 flat fee, as well as a $16 fee charged per day per guest. This includes the National Park fee, as well as Virgin Island Search and Rescue (VISAR) contributions.
