Lurssen superyacht Project JAG heads out on sea trials

Lurssen superyacht Project JAG has been spotted heading out towards the North Sea in preparation for her sea trials ahead of the final outfitting stages and delivery to her new owner.

Seen cruising on the Kiel Canal in Germany, the 122m (400ft) motor yacht  features exterior design penned by Nuvolari Lenard, while her interiors have been designed by the renowned British design firm, Reymond Langton. 

Launched in August 2023 from Lurssen's Schacht-Audorf facility in Germany, she has quickly made a huge impact on the yachting industry with a striking blue hull and her iconic jaguar attached to her bowsprit.

Sold during the  Monaco Yacht Show back in 2019, she is set to accommodate up to 20 guests in an 11-cabin layout and will feature a range of enticing facilities including a dancefloor, beauty salon, sauna, an elevator, underwater lights, a spacious beach club, gym, on-deck jacuzzi, WiFi and air conditioning.

4 Mega Lürssen Superyachts Set To Launch In 2023

These four mega projects underway at the highly acclaimed German shipyard Lürssen are proof that the trend of building large superyachts, built for adventure, isn’t going anywhere. Owners are still opting for explorer-worthy exteriors while maintaining a classic and luxurious superyacht interior.

Lürssen has a reputation for delivering some of the world’s largest superyachts, a reputation that is sure to continue to be upheld within the next year. Featuring lengths between 80 and 145 metres, these four Lürssen superyachts will be launched this year. Here’s what we know about the various projects, some more elusive than others.

‘Luminance’ – 145m

At 145 metres, the secretive project Luminance is the 7th largest yacht to be built by Lürssen, ranking as the 15th largest superyacht in the world. Construction began in 2018, the vessel was not again seen until May 2021, when she was transported for outfitting. Recently seen for the very first time, the project is currently located in Aumund, Germany as she nears completion. Exterior design is the work of Espen Øino .

‘Jag’ – 122m

Jag joins Luminance in the line-up of the largest superyachts currently under construction in the world, the project was commissioned by a repeat client and is the owner’s third Lürssen superyacht. The yacht hit the water for the first time in 2021, and is due to be delivered this year. The vessel boasts 20 guest cabins and 40 crew cabins, as well as typical luxury superyacht features including a spa, gym, swimming pool, cinema and a dance floor.

‘project icecap’ – 107m.

Known as project ‘ Icecap ‘ during the build, this 107 metre will soon be known as M/Y Shackleton. Perhaps the name is a hint as to the nature of the vessel’s explorative cruising abilities, a further hint is the X-bow and sizeable tender stowage on deck. Recently spotted outside of the shipyard in Wolgast, Germany, she is due to be delivered early this year. Salt Ship Design are responsible for her exterior design and naval architecture.

‘Project 1601’ – 90m

LUMINANCE is a 138.8 m Motor Yacht, built in Germany by Lurssen and delivered in 2024.

She has a gross tonnage of 8999.0 GT and a 20.0 m beam.

She was designed by Espen Oeino International , who has designed 66 other superyachts in the BOAT Pro database.

The naval architecture was developed by Lurssen , who has architected 69 other superyachts in the BOAT Pro database, and the interior of the yacht was designed by Francois Zuretti , who has 204 other superyacht interiors designed in the BOAT Pro database - she is built with a Teak deck, a Steel hull, and Aluminium superstructure.

LUMINANCE is in the top 5% by LOA in the world. She is one of 70 motor yachts longer than 100m, and, compared to similarly sized motor yachts, her volume is 1786.31 GT above the average.

LUMINANCE is currently sailing under the Cayman Islands flag, the 2nd most popular flag state for superyachts with a total of 1366 yachts registered. Sunrise Yachts, a luxury yacht building company which is based in Turkey, has been made a main sponsor of next year’s 2011 Moscow International Boat Show (MIBS). The four-day Russian yacht show event is currently scheduled to run from April 14-17 at the Moscow’s Crocus exhibition centre.

MIBS is organised by the ITE Group and it is one of Russia’s leading boat shows and is an internationally recognised superyacht event. The show covering everything from small parts and accessories to large superyacht with over 9,000 people and 178 exhibitors attended the last year show.

The Paolo Scanu-designed Sunrise 45 yacht is an ocean-going cruising yacht that was released in 2009 to much acclaim at this was the group’s first-ever model.

Sunrise Yachts was founded in 2007 by the German entrepreneur Herbert P Baum along with the French-British yacht builder Guillaume Roché. The luxury yacht group is based in Antalya, Turkey and utilises a 10,000sq m shipyard facility. Sunrise has two sheds measuring 100m (328ft) x 16m (53ft), as well as a 70m (230ft) x 16m (53ft) fully acclimatized paint shed that can accommodate new-build and refit projects up to 65m (213ft) in length and 1,200 tonnes displacement.

Along each side of the yacht-building facility, space is available for long-term sub-contractors with the latest equipment and logistics capabilities, along with air-conditioned storage, ventilation and extraction plants. The shipyard is organized as an “assembler,” based loosely on the car industry’s model, with a small, yet powerful project management team charged with running all the in-house long-term sub-contractors.
