Hargrave’s 186-Foot Vessel Shows Creativity

If you ask Sam Shalem what convinced him that Hargrave Custom Yachts could build an 887-gross-ton 186-footer—its most complex yacht ever—he answers without hesitation: “I developed a confidence.”

It’s a sensible reply from a man who commissioned three Hargrave yachts prior to Baba’s , which is 50 feet larger and more than double the gross tonnage of his last Hargrave. Baba’s is also classed to Lloyds Commercial Large Yacht Code (LY3), despite initially planning solely for a private yacht. So, what has he experienced with Hargrave that he believes he wouldn’t have elsewhere? He’ll tell you, again without hesitation, “They’re highly honest. … They’re professional.”

These days, many shipyards tell buyers they can design their yachts the way they see fit, but some of those same builders actually offer semicustom yachts. Some, arguably, are more production than semicustom. Clients have two, maybe three choices for general arrangements, for example, and the exterior styling is set in stone. Fewer permit moving nonstructural bulkheads. Much of the time, the systems and engine packages are nonnegotiable.

That was not the case with Baba’s .

“That’s the biggest advantage of Hargrave,” Shalem says. “They let you do this.”

Hargrave saw the challenge as a way to prove its mettle to would-be owners outside the United States. “This is the connection to the global market we never had,” says Michael Joyce, Hargrave’s CEO. The yard also let Shalem—a longtime owner of a real-estate-development and -management company who is accustomed to assembling teams—play a large role in choosing craftsmen to work on the project. This father of four and grandfather to even more (baba means “grandfather” in several cultures) was hands-on in nearly all aspects, ranging from gathering the workers to specifying the systems to selecting the mosaics in the interior.

Shalem’s boat-ownership days date back to 1975, when he purchased a 22-foot bowrider. Fast-forward to 1999, and he took delivery of his first Hargrave, a 92-foot flush-deck motoryacht he christened Babe. Seven years later came the 105-foot Hargrave Dream, followed by the 136-foot trideck DREAmer in 2011.

DREAmer was the first Hargrave constructed somewhere other than the Kha Shing, Taiwan, shipyard. She was constructed in Turkey, at Shalem’s request, at Ned Ship Group.

When it came to Baba’s , another shipyard switch was in order because of her steel hull and aluminum superstructure; the previous yachts were all fiberglass. The former Sunrise Yachts shipyard in Turkey was available, so Hargrave acquired it and renamed it HSY, for Hargrave Super Yachts. Shalem researched regulatory requirements, sourced international subcontractors, picked department chiefs, and selected his captain and crew. Joyce credits “Sam’s people skills” in bringing together these teams, including Turkey-based Unique Yacht Design for styling and interiors.

The yacht is designed for family use with six staterooms: a main-deck master, four guest staterooms belowdecks and a VIP on the bridge deck. A waterfall spills into the hot tub on the sun deck, which Shalem’s grandchildren particularly love. The most popular place on board is the beach club, with its own hot tub, bar and gym equipment. The family especially enjoys the space because it’s something DREAmer didn’t have.

“This is the most detailed owner we’ve ever worked for,” Joyce asserts, adding that Shalem was as specific about the color of the leather stitching as he was about equipment. The master-stateroom headboard replicates the band of a Cartier watch. Two galleys are on board, with the main-deck galley being a showpiece of stone. (Shalem likes to cook, though the belowdecks galley for crew comes into play when he’s with his family.) The yacht’s wooden wall panels took six months to craft and complete, according to Joyce. Each piece required hand-shaping, sanding, gluing and then veneering.

The crew has a lounge with a video game console, leather settee and head. Together with Shalem, the captain selected all the helm electronics and their layout. Having served aboard DREAmer for three years, the captain has a good working relationship with his boss.

Overall, the boss is thrilled with the boat. “This is my baby,” Shalem says. As for Hargrave, it now has five yachts under construction at the HSY shipyard, as well as the capability of constructing in fiberglass, aluminum and steel. The hope? To show even more would-be owners how confidence looks.

She will be making her world premier at the 2019 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) and is expected to be at the Face Dock at Bahia Mar which is a new location for Hargrave Custom Yachts to display at. The vessel is full-metal construction as mentioned before and was built to Lloyds 100 A-1 Commercial Class. This year's Hargrave display will definitely be an attention-grabber.

While the exterior presents a design that is balanced and with angular surfaces the interior is also of interest. Below is the master suite which is full-beam in nature with large windows on either side of the room. The position of the suite is towards the forward main deck area and takes advantage of Baba’s 34-foot beam. The massive double bed is centrally placed echoing the placement of the sculpted tray ceiling above with in-set LED lighting.

This is the ensuite for the master suite. The space is light thanks to the stone chosen for the tile-work and the ceiling panels. This is handsomely contrasted by glossed mid-tone timber which is also seen in other areas onboard. A master bathroom should always be just as lavish as the principal room they are serving. This one ticks all the boxes!

The yacht is actually fitted out to a six cabin layout for the owner and guests. This example below is a guest double located on the lower deck. It is spacious and the décor follows the general theme seen around this superyacht. There are four guest cabins on the lower deck, a master cabin on the forward main deck and a VIP on the upper deck.

The main deck salon is completed in an interesting layout. Not too formal neither too casual. There is a sense of free-form flow with the presentation of the main seating in the salon with the curved pieces. It is a more intimate set up leaving wide space on the sides. On many other yachts the sides by the windows typically feature built-in cabinetry and seating, HSY Yachts took a slightly different approach.

Up one deck, one will find the upper salon or what many may term the sky lounge. This space is more informal and is geared towards entertainment with a bar close-by ready to serve your favorite cocktails. The décor also changed in the space with different timber on the floor and sweeping curves to the main settee. The ceiling work is also a work of art with its tapered in tiered details all highlighted by LED lighting.

Outside on the aft upper deck there is a lot of space to be enjoyed. The round al-fresco dining table seats nine to ten comfortably and the rest of the space is open. No sun-lounger chairs seen in the photo but a few easy-sitting chairs are placed.

The sundeck is usually one of the most used areas on any yacht. On Baba’s the sundeck is fitted with a Jacuzzi on the forward-end of the deck which is flanked by striped sunpads. Centrally placed under the hardtop is a small bar which is ready to serve the liquid courage of your choice. The deck appears served by the yacht’s central lift so there is even easier access without having to take the stairs.

On the flat-end of the yacht, the aft lower deck you will find the beach club region which is expanded by a large transom door that folds out to the water. The door has an integrated swim ladder that allows a more graceful entry and exit to the water. The real estate on the swim platform when the transom door is extended is decent and many different pieces of furniture can be brought out to help make the day at anchor more relaxing.

Baba’s is a 56-meter superyacht with a beam of 10.4-meters. She was delivered in 2019 to her American owner. The yacht was actually built at HSY Yachts in Turkey with a volume of approximately 800 GT. She is powered by twin CAT 3512 Tier 4 diesels and at full throttle her top speed is close to 18-knots. Guests arriving by tender will disembark onto the swim platform to be greeted by a generous sunbathing area that connects to the beach club. Access to the main deck aft is granted via two stairways, and the shaded guest area is furnished with a curving sofa along the stern and a raised dining table.

A more formal alfresco meal setting can be found on the upper deck, where a grand oval table seats up to 12 guests. The foredeck is dedicated to storing the tenders and motorised water toys to leave the lower deck free for social spaces.

‘Total Disgrace’: Anger, Frustration as Mass Heating Failures Across Russia Leave Thousands in the Cold

P ODOLSK, Moscow region – Residents throughout Russia affected by unprecedented winter heating outages in recent days have expressed their frustration and urged local authorities to restore heating in their homes.

In Podolsk, a town some 30 kilometers south of the capital Moscow, at least 149,000 residents — nearly half of its population — were left without heating when a heating main burst at a nearby private ammunition plant.

“It’s a total disgrace. There is no heating and no hot water. We have to sleep in sleeping bags,” Yuri, a local resident, told The Moscow Times.

“I have no words to describe how bad the situation is," said Yuri, who declined to provide his surname. "We have had no heating for almost six days."

Heating issues have affected residents in the Moscow region, where temperatures have plunged to as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius in the past week, as well as people in the Far East Primorye region , the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg , Penza , the southern Voronezh and Volgograd regions and more.

In the Tver region, a group of residents filmed an appeal to President Vladimir Putin, saying that they “are freezing from the cold” in the village of Novozavidovsky.

“We're literally being killed by the cold,” a woman in the video said, adding that they have been sending requests to local authorities since September after their houses were connected to a boiler room whose power was reportedly insufficient.

“This is some kind of torture and extermination of the population 100 kilometers from Moscow,” she added.

Residents of the Moscow region town of Elektrostal lit a fire in the street to draw the authorities’ attention to the heating problem.

“It’s impossible to stay in our houses. We're freezing!” a group of women in the video said.

Suffering from subzero temperatures, residents are placing the blame on local authorities and utility services for failing to take necessary precautions and not taking action to resolve the situation.

“We are sending complaints everywhere but no one listens to us. We have portable heaters working in every room, but the temperature inside is still 10 degrees Celsius,” Yelena from Podolsk said.

“There is a clinic and a hospital, as well as kindergartens, where there is no heating. And we have no answers, no assistance, no explanation,” Yelena added.

Podolsk authorities opened temporary heating centers and declared a state of emergency.

Local authorities linked the heating problems to the fact that the town is heated by a boiler plant owned by the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant, a private ammunition factory and one of the largest weapon cartridge production enterprises in the country.

“The facility is under tight security conditions, which limits our ability to oversee winter preparations,” the Moscow region’s Vice Governor Yevgeny Khromushin said last week. “We were unaware of the problem for nearly a day.”

An unidentified Moscow region official and two senior executives at the plant were arrested on suspicion of providing unsafe services, Russia’s Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said in a statement Tuesday.

Investigators said that Podolsk’s deputy mayor was accused of misusing authority by issuing a readiness certificate for the boiler house at the plant.

In the neighboring Tver region, the authorities opened a criminal case over the laundering of over 84 million rubles ($938,993) in heating bills paid by residents, the Astra Telegram channel reported this week, citing unidentified sources. According to investigators, the heads of the local water intake and boiler house misappropriated the heating payments for personal use.

Reacting to the heating failures, Putin on Tuesday asked Emergency Situations Minister Alexander Kurenkov to provide heat and electricity to the affected residents.

The outages appear to be the latest effect of several decades of crumbling infrastructure in Russia which have been linked to endemic corruption and mismanagement.

The overall decay of Russia's municipal infrastructure surpassed 70% in 2022, the pro-Kremlin newspaper Izvestia reported .

When asked about the latest heating outages, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the problems and linked them to poor municipal infrastructure, saying that people “had to endure a lot of inconvenience in the cold and without electricity.”

"Despite all the titanic efforts to update all housing and communal services systems, there's still a certain part that remains considerably deteriorated. These programs will continue, but it is impossible to update all pipes and all housing and communal services systems in 10-15 years,” Peskov said.

As for now, residents affected by heating issues appear to lack optimism that the problems will be solved efficiently.

"It's been a week since we've had heating, and the temperature in my apartment is around 11 degrees Celsius,” Podolsk resident Lidiya told The Moscow Times.

“Unfortunately, no one knows when it will be repaired,” she added.
