grosse pointe yacht club art fair

The 2021 Grosse Pointe Art Fair will be held lakeside from noon to 7 p.m., May 22, and noon to 5 p.m., May 23, at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. Visitors can shop exquisite works of art they cannot find online or in the big box stores.

In addition to the Grosse Pointe Art Fair, Art Fair Fun also produces the Fine Art Fine Wine Fair at St. Mary’s in Orchard Lake, consulting with 19 Michigan Art Fairs including fairs at the Ann Arbor Art Fair and the Wyandotte Street Art Fair. As they work to bring the visual arts to the public in the form of art fairs, they are also developing a nonprofit end to bring creative resources to those with chronic conditions and help women artists gain exposure in the art world to increase their representation in permanent collections.

GROSSE POINTE SHORES — An annual fine art fair has a new home in the Grosse Pointes.

After being at the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club for the last couple of years, the Art as Healing Foundation is moving its Grosse Pointe Art Fair just down the road, to the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores. The juried fine art and fine artisan fair will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 19 and 20 in the Ford House Visitors Center.

Work by approximately 40 artists — from as far away as California — will be featured and available for purchase. Most of the artists are from the Midwest, and several hail from metro Detroit — including glass artist Helen Agius-Andrese, of Farmington Hills; sculptor Carrie Bladecki, of Rochester; ceramist Chrys Bonnay-Lewis, of Grosse Pointe Woods; painter Linda Boyle, of Grosse Pointe Park; ceramist Valarie Davis, of Grosse Pointe Woods; fiber artist Christina Liedtke, of Detroit; leather artist Jennifer Krcic, of Keego Harbor; jewelry maker Amy Peterson, of Detroit; painter Cathy McCarthy, of Sterling Heights; painter Jamie Thomson, of Royal Oak; and painter Jules Pflanzer, of Bloomfield Hills.

The nonprofit Art as Healing Foundation — which is currently based in Ypsilanti but will soon be moving to Brighton — was established in 2015 by Karyn Stetz, of Brighton, a painter, photographer, installation and digital artist.

Stetz said her foundation organizes art fairs and exhibitions throughout the region, including in Charlevoix, Toledo and the Brighton/Pinkney area.

“It’s a way for artists to get exposure and sell their work,” Stetz said.

In addition, the Art as Healing Foundation hosts workshops and other programs as it works to promote inclusion and diversity in art and use art as a means of healing.

“Art is a healing endeavor,” Stetz said, noting that it can be healing for the artists as they create work and express themselves, and it can also be healing for viewers. “Most people put their heart and souls into (their artwork).”

Davis will be showcasing works from some of her series, which include “Scarred Women”; “Matriarchs,” about the wisdom and grace imparted by older women in families; “Side Views,” men and women in profile; and “Warriors,” about the courage and strength men muster to overcome challenges. Davis said “Scarred Women” focuses on women who may be beautifully dressed and made up on the outside, but inside might be struggling with trauma such as a divorce or breast cancer; these difficulties make women stronger and shape them, the artist said. Davis’ ceramics are often sculptural in nature.

“Just pushing through life is what my work is about,” Davis said. “How we have to step out into the world regardless of what we’re going through. … I want people to be sympathetic to others.”

Davis said she will also be bringing some of the lamps and decorative plates she’s created.

Fair visitors will find a range of work, from painting to jewelry to photography to woodworking.

“The artists are really exceptional,” Stetz said.

She said they hope to build this event into a fundraiser for the foundation, but because this is the first year they’re going to be at the Ford House, they weren’t sure what the response was going to be like.

“We definitely have the intention to make it an annual event,” Stetz said.

Admission to the fair is included with a Ford House grounds pass, which costs $7 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 12 and free for children ages infant through 5. Admission is free for Ford House members.

The Ford House is located at 1100 Lake Shore Road in Grosse Pointe Shores. For more information, visit GrossePointeArtFair.com or contact Stetz by texting her at (734) 476-1772 or emailing [email protected].

Alice in Wonderland, classical strings and the American Dream: Detroit's arts weekend

grosse pointe yacht club art fair

This weekend's arts offerings in metro Detroit include great options for art lovers and collectors, theatergoers and classical music fans.

Artist Keto Green works on a new piece. His solo exhibition, "Against It All," debuts Saturday, May 20, 2023 at Playground Detroit.

Beauty from tragedy

Playground Detroit’s newest visual art exhibition, Keto Green’s “Against It All,” debuts Saturday with an opening reception from 6 to 9 p.m. at the gallery. Born and raised in Detroit, Green is a homeless man “living in a city full of drive and change, and overcoming poverty while trying to make a difference.” He paints in bright colors on found objects and depicts figurative and scenic images based on painful memories from his childhood, including the loss of a brother to suicide. Green uses his artwork to uplift viewers and spread awareness of mental illness.

A dream still deferred

In playwright Lynn Nottage’s “Sweat,” a group of Reading, Pennsylvania, factory workers struggles with life and loyalty in a failing economy and a rapidly changing industry. The play, which opened earlier this month at Detroit Repertory Theatre, won a Pulitzer Prize in 2017 for being “a nuanced yet powerful drama that reminds audiences of the stacked deck still facing workers searching for the American Dream.”

Detroit Repertory Theatre, 13103 Woodrow Wilson St., Detroit. 313-868-1347. detroitreptheatre.com. Runs through June 25. Advance tickets $25, same-day tickets $30. Theater opens one hour before curtain and shows begin exactly on time; latecomers will not be seated.

Murmansk Oblast

Murmansk Oblast [lower-alpha 1] is a federal subject (an oblast ) of Russia , located in the northwestern part of the country, with a total land area of 144,900 square kilometres (55,900   sq   mi) . Its only internal border is the Republic of Karelia to the south, as well is bordered internationally by Finland to the west and Norway to the northwest and the Barents Sea lies to the north and White Sea lies to the south and east. Its administrative center is the city of Murmansk . As of the 2010 Census , its population was 795,409, [7] but at the 2021 Census this had declined to 667,744. [13]

Geographically, Murmansk Oblast is located mainly on the Kola Peninsula almost completely north of the Arctic Circle [14] and is a part of the larger Sápmi (Lapland) region that spans over four countries. [15] The oblast borders with the Republic of Karelia in Russia in the south, Lapland Region in Finland in the west, Troms and Finnmark County in Norway in the northwest, and is bounded by the Barents Sea in the north and the White Sea in the south and east. [14] Arkhangelsk Oblast of Russia lies across the White Sea. [14]

Much of the oblast's relief is hilly, with the Khibiny and Lovozero ranges rising as high as 1,200 meters (3,900   ft) above sea level and stretching from west to east. [14] The highest point of Murmansk Oblast is Yudychvumchorr , a flat-topped peak of the Khibiny. [16] The north of the oblast is mostly covered by tundra ; forest tundra prevails further south, while the southern regions are in the taiga zone. [14] There are over 100,000 lakes and 18,000 rivers in the oblast. [14] The coast contains the Rybachy Peninsula and the Cape Svyatoy Nos peninsulas.

The climate is harsh and unstable, due to the proximity of the Gulf Stream on one side and Arctic cold fronts on the other. [14] Sharp temperature changes, high winds, and abundant precipitation are common throughout the year, with the heating season lasting for ten straight months. [14] However, the waters of the Murman Coast in the south remain warm enough to remain ice-free even in winter. [17]

There is also a large number of islands belonging to the oblast, the main ones being (west to east) the Aynovy Islands , Bolshoy Oleny Island , Kildin Island Malyy Oleniy Island , Kharlov Island , Vesknyak Island , Litskiye Island , Nokuyev Island , Vitte Island , Lumbovskiy Island , Goryainov Island and Sosnovets Island .

  • Lake Yurkhyamyayarvi

Most areas of the Kola Peninsula are subarctic climate ( Köppen climate classification : Dfc ). The nearby islands usually belong to tundra ( Köppen climate classification : ET ).

The Saami , now a very small minority, are the indigenous people of the region. Russians started exploring the shores of the White Sea as early as in the 12th century, and in 1916 founded the Russian city of Murmansk , now home to 307,257   ( 2010 Census ) , [7] or nearly 40% of the oblast's population. Many Finns also immigrated to Murmansk during the Finnish famine , around the year 1860. [18]

The oblast was established on May   28, 1938 from Murmansk Okrug of Leningrad Oblast (comprising the city of Murmansk, Kirovsky , Kolsky , Lovozersky , Polyarny , Saamsky , Teribersky , and Tersky Districts ) and Kandalakshsky District of the Karelian ASSR . [19]

The area of Pechengsky District ( Petsamo in Finnish ), which was ceded to Finland by the 1920 Treaty of Tartu and gave Finland access to the Barents Sea , was recaptured by the Soviet Union in 1940. After the Paris Peace Treaties of 1947 , the local Saami population was given the choice either of staying in Soviet Russia or resettling in Finland. [ citation needed ] Most of them chose the second option. [ citation needed ] On 30 October 1997, Murmansk, alongside Astrakhan , Kirov , Ulyanovsk , and Yaroslavl signed a power-sharing agreement with the government of Russia, granting it autonomy. [20] The agreement would be abolished on 31 May 2003. [21]

Oblast Administration (right) and City Administration (left) buildings on Lenina Avenue, Murmansk Zdanie gorodskoi i oblastnoi administratsii v Murmanske..JPG

During the Soviet period, the high authority in the oblast was shared between three persons: The first secretary of the Murmansk CPSU Committee (who in reality had the biggest authority), the chairman of the oblast Soviet (legislative power), and the Chairman of the oblast Executive Committee (executive power). Since 1991, CPSU lost all the power, and the head of the Oblast administration, and eventually the governor was appointed/elected alongside elected regional parliament .

The Charter of Murmansk Oblast is the fundamental law of the region. The Legislative Assembly of Murmansk Oblast is the province's standing legislative (representative) body. The Legislative Assembly exercises its authority by passing laws, resolutions, and other legal acts and by supervising the implementation and observance of the laws and other legal acts passed by it. The highest executive body is the Oblast Government, which includes territorial executive bodies such as district administrations, committees, and commissions that facilitate development and run the day to day matters of the province. The Oblast administration supports the activities of the Governor who is the highest official and acts as guarantor of the observance of the oblast Charter in accordance with the Constitution of Russia .

Population : 667,744. [23]   ( 2021 Census ) ; [24] 795,409   ( 2010 Census ) ; [7] 892,534   ( 2002 Census ) ; [25] 1,146,757   ( 1989 Census ) . [26]

The indigenous people of the area, the Saami , are only a tiny minority today. As of the 2002 Census , 92.2% of the oblast's population live in urban areas. [27] The most populous city is the Oblast's administrative center, Murmansk , with 270,000 inhabitants in 2021. [27] Other large cities and towns include Severomorsk , Apatity , Kandalaksha , Monchegorsk , and Kirovsk .

According to the 2010 Census, the ethnic composition of the oblast was as follows: [7]

  • Russians : 89%
  • Ukrainians : 4.8%
  • Belarusians : 1.7%
  • Tatars : 0.8%
  • Finns : 0.5%
  • Karelians : 0.2%
  • Norwegians : 0.2%
  • Komi : 0.2%
  • Saami : 0.2%
  • others: 2.4%
  • 73,484 people were registered from administrative databases, and could not declare an ethnicity. It is estimated that the proportion of ethnicities in this group is the same as that of the declared group. [28]

Vital statistics for 2022: [29] [30]

  • Births: 5,682 (7.9 per 1,000)
  • Deaths: 8,777 (12.1 per 1,000)

Total fertility rate (2022): [31] 1.47 children per woman

Life expectancy (2021): [32] Total — 68.29 years (male   — 63.72, female   — 72.85)

In 2009, the urban areas were marked by natural population decline (−0.16% per year) and the rural areas were marked by natural population growth (+0.35% per year). [33]

According to a 2012 survey [34] 41.7% of the population of Murmansk Oblast adheres to the Russian Orthodox Church , 3% are unaffiliated generic Christians , 1% are Orthodox Christian believers who do not belong to any church or are members of other (non-Russian) Orthodox churches , 1% are adherents of Islam , 0.4% are adherents of Rodnovery (Slavic native faith) and other indigenous folk religions, and 1% are members of the Catholic Church . In addition, 28% of the population declares to be "spiritual but not religious", 12% is atheist , and 12.5% follows other religions or did not give an answer to the question. [34]

The Murmansk Oblast is very rich in natural resources and has deposits of over 700 minerals. [36] The main industries of the region are in the sphere of raw material extraction and basic processing. [37] The largest industries are metallurgy (36,6%), electric power-production (22,9%) and food-industry, including fishing (13,7%). [38] [39] The icefree port of Murmansk plays an important role in marine transportation in Russia, and the oblast has a 41% share of the total Russian marine transport market. [40] [41] The fishing industry is among the most profitable in the region, supplying 16% of Russia's total fish production. Murmansk is a key base for three fishing fleets, including Russia's largest, the Murmansk Trawl Fleet . [37]

A Norilsk Nickel plant (formerly, Severonikel) in Monchegorsk Monchegorsk factories.jpg

The economy of the region is export-oriented. Main export items are nickel products, apatite concentrate, copper and copper products, aluminium and ferrous metals. [40] The Murmansk Region produces almost 100 percent of Russia's apatite concentrate (3.7 million tons in 1998), 43 percent of nickel, 15 percent of copper, 12 percent of iron ore and iron ore concentrate (17.7 million and 6.4 million tons in 1998), and 40 percent of cobalt. [36] [38]

The largest companies of the region – constituting 90% of the oblast's production – are Pechenganickel , Olcon , the Kola Nuclear Power Plant , Sevrybkholodflot , Murmanrybprom , Murmansk Trawl Fleet and Murmansk Shipping Company . [36]

Large oil and gas resources have been discovered on the shelf of the Barents sea, including the massive Shtokman field – one of the world's largest gas fields with estimated reserves of 3.8 trillion cubic meters. [36] [41] [42] Prospective oil fields could potentially yield up to 40 million tons in the next 10–15 years.
