The spot chosen for snorkeling was just amazing. Flamenco beach is definitely a must. But what made a difference is the awesome Sail Getaways crew. All of them were super attentive and nice with us. They went above and beyond to ensure our trip was perfect. Not once I had to order for a refill of my drink. 11 out of 10, 100% recommended, I'll definitely repeat.

Was all of our first time and it was so beautiful and fun. We got to see a barracuda, big jellyfish and a bunch of other little fish. We enjoyed the guys explaining everything, Oscar was fun and kept us entertained since the music wasn't working haha. Loved that lunch and alcohol was included, was so worth the money!

We went with a friend to visit Culebra Island and everything was very nice, the trip was very pleasant, the guides were very attentive, VERY good music and food, I recommend them, 10/10!!

Wonderful experience. Clear turquoise water, white sandy beaches, lush green islands, and a remarkable crew. It was a perfect day of swimming, snorkeling, and positive vibes all around. Highly recommend these guys.

My friend and I took the tour to Tamarindo and Flamenco beach and it was amazing. The weather was perfect which made the ride super smooth. We were a fortunate group to enjoy a beautiful day. It was our first time experience and we loved it. We are beginner swimmers (to say the least) and the gentlemen were kind enough to get in the water with us so we wouldn’t miss the opportunity. Everyone on the boat was super friendly and made us feel like family! It’s definitely a must do activity when visiting the island. Looking forward to many more!!!

It was soo much fun. We took off on time went snorkeling not many fishes but still a great experience then we went to the flamingo island and got 2 hours to ourself to enjoy l. Crew was super friendly and kept the drinks coming. Would totally recommend

Great quick getaway for our group of 13. Quick boat ride to snorkel, excellent fish viewing and lunch. Then a quick boat ride to Flamenco Beach to wander around. The staff was friendly, knowledgable, and patient.

We took the three-in-one catamaran getaway on New Year's Day with Omar and Arturo. Our group was 2 adults a 9 year old and a 5 year old. All of us had an amazing time. Omar and Arturo were awesome sailors/hosts/guides making sure they got us to Icacos safely for snorkeling, answered all our questions, taught us about Puerto Rico and even served us delicious drinks and snacks. A really beautiful afternoon/evening with super friendly guides, Omar and Arturo.

A Superb Adventure in Fajardo, PR

"Great value! Beautiful day on the ocean with 2 stops - the first one more beach-oriented and a chance to practice snorkeling, the second at Tortuga Reef for in-depth snorkeling. The crew were wonderful and the lunch provided exceeded expectations - all fresh, and freshly-prepared sandwich fixings and salads. Even fresh fruit & veg. The free unlimited drinks are not very strong, but for $2, they'll add a shot of rum. Fins, masks and snorkels are provided, which simplifies logistics. We had a great time."

"We had a perfect day for snorkeling and a crew made the entire trip fun and exciting. Great lunch spread and delicious drink selection. Perfect trip for families of all ages. We would recommend the Spread Eagle II for anyone snorkeling out of Fajardo"

"At first I thought there were too many people on the boat but it worked out fine. We had a nice day. The small island where we first stopped had several other boats there. It would have been nice to have landed at a more private place. Same for the spot where we snorkeled. The water was beautiful. We saw some fish, Be sure to wear sun screen!"

"We had a fun day with the friendly and professional crew. Even though the snorkeling visibility was not great, the sailing was fun, the day was beautiful and the whole family enjoyed it. This is definitely a great idea for an outing with anyone from kids to grandparents. People who don't want to snorkel can beachcomb, swim, or just enjoy piña coladas on the catamaran. :)"

Castillo Tours operates its own boats, vehicles, and staff. They specialize in corporate groups.

We were a group of 8 adults and 2 small children ( ages 4 and 1 ) and this was the perfect trip. The entire crew was excellent! The sailing was steady, the views beautiful, the lunch and drinks delicious, and the swimming and snorkeling in crystal clear turquoise waters amazing! There was plenty of time to enjoy each part of the trip, very fun and relaxing!

Sailing, swimming, and snorkeling fun!

Sailing, swimming, and snorkeling fun!

We booked the Snorkel/BBQ/Sunset Sail on the” Zatara” directly with East Island Excursions due to a recommendation made by the owner of the house we were renting. Our party consisted of my wife and I, three 14 year old girls, and our 5 year old son. Everyone had a great time! The “Zatara”was well equipped and the maximum booking of 19 passengers was just right for the size of the boat. Everyone had space to relax on deck during the sailing portions of the trip. We sailed to an off-shore island that offered a lovely reef that was perfect for snorkeling. The crew was knowledgeable and attentive to our wants/needs. The open bar was well stocked, and the rum punch was tasty and refreshing.

Excellent Day Trip!

We enjoyed a day on the water on a catamaran with Captain Wilo and crew! What a wonderful crew. We never had to want for anything and they kept the liquid refreshments coming! We have a great BBQ lunch while at an island for some swimming and snorkeling. We cannot say enough good things about this day trip and would do it again on our next visit!

Great snorkeling trip!

Great snorkeling trip!

This was our first family vacations together. We choose to do the Catamaran day trip to Culebra. It was the highlight of our 8 day vacation. The crew of of Alex, Willie, the captain and Coral were awesome. I had been to Culebra before but the other 11 had not and no one was disappointed. The food, crew and organization of the whole operation from booking to the Marina was professional and on schedule. We highly recommend East Island Excursions.

This catamaran trip was AWESOME! One of the best things I’ve experienced vacationing in Puerto Rico. First of all I want to thank Jorge one of the crew members for making this trip a great experience, he made sure my family and I had food, drinks and was very informative on the sights. This was my second excursion with East Island Excursions and they did it again! We were a family of four (with a 5 yr old). Fun was had by all…I could not keep my 5 year old off the water-slide 🙂 Food was great and a great atmosphere.

Did it again!

Did it again!

Took the Icacos Island tour with East Island Excursions. Loved every bit of the tour. Truly professional, friendly and helpful crew. The places we were taken to were exotic and I just loved it . My phone which had most of the pics and memories got drenched in the sea water and died and Levi one of the member of the crew member truly felt our anxiety took pictures for us and sent it later . Wonderful guy. I am not a swimmer but took the plunge with the help of Moises from the crew team . I would recommend East Island Excursions and Levi to anyone visiting Puerto Rico and taking the Island tours

Loved the Icacos Island tour with East Island Excursions

Loved the Icacos Island tour with East Island Excursions

Excellent day trip and awesome crew! This was my second time taking the excursion. The Culebra Island is absolutely beautiful. The crew members were all very friendly and helpful. It was a great experience.

Culebra snorkeling trip

This excursion is well worth it. We had a great time on the Zatara, with an exceptional crew who delivered the best service, and took time to get to know us. This was aboard a 19 passenger catamaran that provided a more intimate experience than some of the larger boats. We had a great time snorkeling, then enjoyed time at the beach and a delicious BBQ lunch. Would definitely do it again! Thank you, East Island Excursions, for a great day on the sea!

Where To Stay In Puerto Rico

One of the best places to stay in Puerto Rico is the Caribe Hilton in San Juan . It’s not only oceanfront, but it has its very own private beach with calm waters for snorkeling, an incredible outdoor pool area, and several restaurants on sight. I stayed here during my visit to San Juan, Puerto Rico and used it as a great central location. It’s only a 10-minute Uber ride to Old San Juan or a 15-minute Uber ride to the international airport.

If you’re looking for more fun in Puerto Rico beyond the adventurous experiences, then you may want to consider combing your trip to be part-adventure and part-relaxation and book a few nights in one of the top Puerto Rico resorts for families .

How To Get To Culebra

There are a few ways that you can get to the remote yet beautiful island of Culebra from the mainland of Puerto Rico.

Take a Ferry To Culebra

The most affordable and popular option is to take a ferry from Ceiba, a town on the eastern coast of Puerto Rico. The ferry ride takes approximately 1 hour, depending on the schedule and sea conditions. It’s advisable to arrive early, especially during peak travel times, as tickets are on a first-come, first-served basis. Learn more about the ferry service here .

Charter A Private Boat or Catamaran from Fajardo

Another option is to charter a private boat or use a water taxi service from Fajardo. This option provides more flexibility in terms of scheduling, but it can be more expensive compared to the ferry. Several companies offer private boat charters to Culebra .

Take A Small Plane to Culebra

Culebra has a small airport called Benjamin Rivera Noriega Airport (CPX), which serves domestic flights from San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) and Isla Grande Airport (SIG). Flying can be more convenient and saves time compared to the ferry or private boat options. Several local airlines, such as Cape Air and Vieques Air Link, operate flights to Culebra.

Things To Do in Culebra

There are some fun things to do in Culebra, and the most popular attraction is exploring the beaches on Culebra. Or, consider visiting the Culebra National wildlife refuge. The tiny island offers a few day’s worth of activities if you’d like to plan a long weekend, or you could do a day trip as one of the top Puerto Rico Adventures and still experience some of the great things to do on Culebra.

Just be sure to check out our family beach vacation packing list before you head there to make sure you have all that you need. Let’s dive into some of the best things to do in Culebra PR.

Rent A Golf Cart and Tour the Island

In order to access the popular beaches on Culebra you’ll need transportation. There are two popular rental places where you can rent a jeep or a golf cart to get around the small island. We rented a gas powered golf cart from Carlos Jeep Rental. You can also look for rentals at Jerry’s Jeep Rental, both located within walking distance to the small airport.

The rental attendant showed me a map and explained how to get to the popular beaches and where to drive and not drive. It was nice to have a golf cart so that my friends and I could get around the island easily during our stay.

Visit the Famous Flamenco Beach

Flamenco Beach is often ranked as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. With its crystal-clear turquoise waters, white sandy shores, and stunning panoramic views, it’s a must-visit spot in Culebra. Honestly, Flameco beach is THE Culebra beach everyone raves about all around Puerto Rico.

It’s absolutely one of the best beaches in Culebra Puerto Rico.

Be sure to plan to grab some beautiful pictures while you’re on this beach! Take advantage of the green rolling hills background along with the aqua water. Much like the best beaches in the Florida Keys.

You can enjoy swimming, snorkeling, sunbathing, or simply relaxing on the white sand beaches. There’s even a lifeguard on duty and bathrooms and showers to rinse off when you’re finished. Be sure to bring your snorkel gear because there’s some great snorkeling on the west side of the beach near the tanks.

Yes, there are deserted US Military tanks that are on the beach and are regularly painted by the locals so they don’t look so rusted. In truth, the US military tested out bombing on Culebra in preparation for the Vietnam War.

Later the locals pushed back and the military left the island, and with that, left behind some tanks and other things. Yet, now people visiting Flamenco Beach are looking for the tanks as they are expecting to see them.

Go Snorkeling off of Culebra

Culebra is known for its excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities. Explore the vibrant underwater world teeming with colorful coral reefs, tropical fish, sea creatures and marine life such as sea turtles and stingrays. Some popular snorkeling and diving spots include Tamarindo Beach, Playa Carlos Rosario Beach, and even the west side of Flamenco Beach.

While I was visiting, I found the calmer waters at Flamenco beach made for some fun and comfortable snorkeling. Scuba diving can also be done if you have the right gear.

Explore Culebra Town

Take a stroll through Culebra Town and explore its charming streets. Visit local shops and restaurants to get a taste of the island’s culture and cuisine.

Stop by the market to grab some food and drinks for a day at the beach, on a boat, or back in your hotel or rental.

Visit the Nature Reserve – Culebra National Wildlife Refuge

Culebra’s National Wildlife Refuge is a place to find many fish, plants and migratory birds. If you enjoy nature, this is place to spend an hour or two.

Take a Day Trip to Culebrita Island

Hire a water taxi or snorkeling tour to Culebrita Island, a small uninhabited island located off the eastern coast of Culebra. Hike up to the Culebrita Lighthouse for stunning views, relax on secluded beaches like Tortuga Beach or Playa de las Hermanas, and soak in natural tidal pools known as “The Baths.”

This is where I saw both a stingray and a sea turtle snorkeling! It was such a beautiful experience. The boat ride was only 30 minutes from Culebra and the water taxi provided beach umbrellas, chairs, paddle boards. We packed up for lunch and drinks and spent an entire afternoon on Culebrita Island.

Visit The Other Beaches On Culebra

From Tamarindo Beach, offering great Culebra snorkeling to the next popular beach called Melones beach which is a great place to watch the sunset, you can enjoy many small beaches during your time on Culebra.

Aside from Melones Beach and Tamarindo Beach, other beaches include Zoni Beach and other hidden beaches which are best to explore with a local guide. There are also some secluded beach and sea life preserves that you can go explore.

Eat at La Cocina Del Navegante

One of the best restaurants in Culebra Puerto Rico is at La Cocina Del Navegante. The coconut shrimp, fried cheese, and spicy crab was delicious. So were the mango drinks the girls had.

Eat at Zaco’s Tacos

Enjoy the fun atmosphere and delicious tacos at Zaco’s Tacos in Culebra.

Where To Stay and Hotels in Culebra Puerto Rico

There are a few good options when looking for Culebra Puerto Rico hotels or rental homes. Be ready for small, privately owned rentals, as Culebra is a very small island that only has a population size of 1,100 people.

Before searching for Puerto Rico Culebra hotels, you are going to want to determine where to stay in Culebra Puerto Rico. If you plan to rent a golf cart or jeep, you can stay just about anywhere the paved roads will take you as the island is just a few short miles wide. But if you’d like to walk, then you’ll want to stay within a mile of the airport, which is within walking distance of the ferry terminal and most of the restaurants.

A place that sleeps a family of 6 within walking distance to both the airport and ferry terminal is this 2 bedroom and 2-bathroom bungalow . It has a full kitchen and places for kids to sleep.

This place offers 2 bedrooms and a jacuzzi on Culebra.

When searching for Culebra Island hotels when planning our recent trip, we started by looking at reviews. Being a small island, we found that VRBO was a better choice to book the best place to stay on Culebra.

Go Beach Hopping Like a Puerto Rican

Puerto Rico Beaches - Best beaches to visit near San Juan

You’ll be tempted to enjoy the beaches of San Juan and remain close to the hotel.  The beaches in San Juan are nice, but they’re on the Atlantic Ocean side, get more crowds, and lack some enchanting traits you can find on beaches outside of the city.  This small island is packed with great beaches, and we can tell you that once you start beach hopping, you’ll become addicted and return for more.   To maximize your time while staying in San Juan, we have compiled a list of the best beaches to explore near San Juan.

Beach Tours from San Juan

Suggested itinerary from san juan.

Beaches are listed from nearest to farthest from San Juan. Driving times with regular traffic

East of San Juan

  • La Posita de Piñones –  Loiza, Puerto Rico – 20 minutes drive
  • Luquillo Beach – Luquillo, Puerto Rico – 40 minutes drive
  • Beach at Icacos Cay – Fajardo, Puerto Rico – 1 hour drive

West of San Juan

All the following beaches have one thing in common, they are natural pools on the north coast.  Coral walls create a shield from the open rough waters of the Atlantic, creating a natural pool.

  • Mar Chiquita – Manati, Puerto Rico – 40 minutes drive
  • La Poza de Las Mujeres – Manati, Puerto Rico – Best during summer, not safe to swim in winter. – 45 minutes drive
  • La Poza del Obispo – Arecibo, Puerto Rico – 1-hour drive – Please do not climb the wall behind the beach.
  • Playa Sardinera – Hatillo, Puerto Rico – 1 hour drive

During inclement weather, these calm water pools become like whirlpools, making it hard for children and adults to swim.  Please do  NOT climb on the coral walls , they can be slippery, the stone has sharp edges and a big wave could surprise you, causing a fall that could lead to falling in open water and loss of life.  Please enjoy these beautiful beaches safely.

For a great day trip on the west coast of Puerto Rico, leave early and visit the following beaches on the northwest coast, in the towns of Isabela and Aguadilla.

  • Pozo Teodoro in Isabela, Puerto Rico – 1.5 hour
  • Jobos Beach in Isabela, Puerto Rico – Lunch at Jobos, there are plenty of seaside bars and restaurants.  It’s a fun beach with a laid-back Puerto Rican beach vibe, lounge rentals available, and surfing lessons. – 1.5 hour drive
  • Crash Boat Beach in Aguadilla – Spend the rest of the day at Crash Boat Beach for swimming, snorkeling (when the water is calm), sunset, and dinner. – 1 hour and 45 minutes drive

Tips for a Fun, Budget Friendly and Stress Free Beach Hopping Experience

Perhaps you like to plan things well; we encourage you to let that go and go beach hopping the Puerto Rican way, nice and relaxed.

Here are our tips for a splendid experience on the coastline:

  • Rent a car for a day to enjoy beach hopping at your own pace.
  • Pack light , you only need a beach towel, sun block, swimsuit, regular clothes to wear over your swimwear when dining.  If you need anything, you can find almost everything at a Walgreens Pharmacy or local grocery store.
  • Stop by a bakery , load up on water, Puerto Rican treats, and sandwiches, and enjoy the island life.
  • Let your hair down , play your favorite tunes, and listen to them a bit louder than you’re used to.  It’s ok.  That’s the Puerto Rican way.
  • When you get hungry , you’ll find plenty of beachside spots, roadside food trucks, and chinchorros (tiny simple food places) serving inexpensive but delicious traditional fritters.

Driving in Puerto Rico

Driving in Puerto Rico is easy, traffic is congested coming out of San Juan, but once you’re out of the city, you’ll be on your way to a nice adventure on the road.

Best Time to Go Beach Hopping

Weekdays are more mellow since locals are at work, so if you like to be away from crowds, weekdays from Tuesdays to Fridays are the best days to go beach hopping around the island.  However, if you love a lively local vibe, you’ll have a lot of fun joining locals at the beach, they certainly know how to make it more lively with music, laughter and fun water sport rentals more available at local beaches for the whole family to enjoy.  Many beachfront restaurants offer live entertainment during weekends.

Wander to the Wildly Beautiful West

Best places to visit in Puerto Rico near San Juan - West Coast

Ask any local where they love to go for summer vacation within the island and the majority will say, the west coast of Puerto Rico .  When speaking about the main island of Puerto Rico not including Culebra and Vieques, the west coast has the best beaches , the most variety of local eateries, the best sunsets, the best surfing beaches, and the most friendly and lively municipalities.  You can spend weeks exploring the West Coast, to make your vacation planning easier, we have created a few itineraries packed with fun things to do and beautiful places to see in one day.  It will be a long but great day, so leave as early as possible from San Juan to beat the heavy traffic.

You can end your day with a visit to the bioluminescent bay in La Parguera before you head back to San Juan on Route 52, our preferred road to get to San Juan with the least traffic lights and congestion.

Excursions you May Enjoy from San Juan - No Car Rental Required

Itinerary 1.

From San Juan, take Rt. 18 to Highway 52 from San Juan towards Caguas, pass Ponce and continue to the town of Guanica, your first stop.
