Black-Owned Yacht Charter Business Launched by HBCU Alum

Soca Caribbean Yacht Charters is a new boutique travel agency founded by a Hampton University and Howard Law School graduate Shelia Ruffin. Growing up on the eastern shore of Virginia, Ruffin always had an affinity for boats. Her grandfather was an avid boater and this allowed her the opportunity to spend her childhood on the water.

Ruffin eventually attended law school but failed to pass the bar on the first try. This led her to land a job on the island of St. Thomas where she decided to practice law. While there, Ruffin decided to become a certified travel associate, but she wanted to do more than just be a travel agent.

“I googled yacht agencies that were one-stop-shops, but I couldn’t find any,” Ruffin told Travel Noire . “This gave me an idea of what I could do. Plus, I couldn’t find any people of color within the industry. Therefore, I set out to start my own company.”

From there, Soca Caribbean Yacht Charters (SCYC) was born.

“We offer a door to dock-to-door service,” Ruffin said. “The minute you step out of your home, there is a luxury car waiting to take you to the airport. Once you arrive in your Caribbean destination, we provide transfers to the dock where you board your yacht. After your trip, we also provide all services in reverse.”

SCYC works with yacht companies in the Bahamas, Grenada, St. Lucia, the British Virgin Islands, St. Vincent and St. Martin. The company provides access to yachts featuring a private chef and captain.

“To be the anchor between the yacht industry and millennials and people of color is amazing,” Ruffin said. “It’s not easy. I’m entering into space where black women aren’t normally present. It’s an amazing feeling.”

SCYC also wants to encourage people of color to experience the high-end luxury yacht experience. Ruffin told the Miami Times , in 2018 black people “contributed $63 billion to America’s travel and tourism industry and Hispanic Americans contributed $56 billion.”

With that type of tourism purchasing power, this black-owned company looks to gain increased market share in the Caribbean.

Seafarers: Historic Black Yacht Club

By Jessica Dortch, AFRO Staff, [email protected]

Being Black in America is hard.  In the 50s and 60s, it was even harder.

A group of Blacks in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area were interested in boating on the Chesapeake Bay, but, unfortunately, the color of their skin restricted their access to premier boating products and supplies. Thus, in 1959, this same group of Blacks created Seafarers Yacht Club (SYC) of Annapolis, Md., because “…The best way to get around exclusion is to form your own,” as Mel Wyche, past commodore of Seafarers Yacht Club, said.

yacht rental dc black owned

Seafarers Yacht Club of Annapolis, Md. was founded in 1959 by a group of Blacks who lived in the D.C. metropolitan area. (Courtesy of www.seafarersyc.com)

SYC members wanted to settle in Annapolis, and after the landmark case of Brown v. Board of Education, which, according to the History Channel , deemed racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional, a once ‘Blacks only’ vacant schoolhouse became the Seafarers new home.

The members of SYC, including the only surviving original member of the club, 93-year-old Joe Carpenter, celebrated their 60 th anniversary on Sept. 14 with a special cruise from Annapolis to the Baltimore Inner Harbor. Since the club’s inception, the group has grown from its original 13 members to include so many other African-American men and women.

“In the club we’ve got African Americans from all walks of life,” Wyche said. “You have no idea what kind of talent we have in that club until you talk to them individually. You learn how accomplished some of these people are, in the club,” he added.

Being a member in one of very few African-American yacht clubs is an accomplishment that gives its members and their families a sense of pride. Ade Adebisi, current commodore, recalls bringing his children to SYC.

Seafarers Yacht Club members celebrated the 60th anniversary of the club with a special anniversary cruise from Annapolis to the Baltimore Inner Harbor.

“It has done a lot for our children because by being a part of this club, our children grew up in an environment of highly successful African Americans,” said Adebisi.

Everyone is familiar with the African proverb “It takes a village to raise a child,” but SYC was founded on this principle, and is still ingrained in the work they provide to the community through the Seafarers Foundation. “Right here in Annapolis you have such a large population of African American children who live close to the water, but have never been in the water. One of the core functions of the foundation is to put on an annual summer youth program…to provide swimming lessons to African American children,” Derrick Cogburn, treasurer of SYC and board member of the Seafarers Foundation, told the AFRO.

This two-week program, starting in the second week of July, was created to teach Black youth, specifically, how to swim. Since the foundation began 10 years ago, the program has expanded to provide youth in Annapolis and surrounding areas with a well-rounded education in boating, water safety, etiquette, and life skills. Recently, the foundation partnered with the U.S. Chess Center to offer lessons to the youth.

Interested yet? SYC isn’t just about boating, the club hosts various events throughout the year including hand dancing classes, Mardi Gras, Thanksgiving dinner, and the club’s upcoming event, ‘An Evening of Jazz.’ On Oct. 19, from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m., club members along with their families and friends are invited to spend an elegant evening at the SYC clubhouse listening to smooth jazz by Aaron Rhines & The Groove Unit. Adebisi, a member of SYC since the early 2000s said, “There will be food, dancing, jazz music. It will be a great Saturday evening in the Fall.” For more events from Seafarers Yacht Club of Annapolis, Md., visit www.seafarersyc.com .

Things to Do in Washington, DC by Boat

Go on a Monument Tour by Boat

Go on a Monument Tour by Boat

When most tourists think of DC, they think of the monuments. While exploring these historical locations on-land can be crowded (and maybe even a bit boring, especially for the kiddos), seeing these iconic monuments by boat offers a whole new perspective. From the Washington Monument, to the Lincoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, World War II Memorial, and more, you’ll have the best view from the water (and you’ll avoid the crowds). Book a boat rental with a local captain for your very own guided hour and history lesson.

Pro Tip : If you’re looking for a truly romantic escape, book your rental during the cherry blossom’s peak bloom between the last week of March and the first week of April. Allow the cherry blossom trees in bloom and the gentle waters you two float on to open up the floodgates and let love come in.

Explore the Georgetown Waterfront & Shops

Georgetown is one of the many older, yet charming neighborhoods in the Washington, DC area. Its trendy retail scene is centered around M street, where avid shoppers will find stores featuring high-end designers like Billy Reid, J.Crew, Anthropologie, Free People, Patagonia, and more. Georgetown is also the home of the historical and scenic C&O canal, running almost parallel to the Potomac River near the Francis Scott Key Memorial Bridge. Dock your boat rental along Georgetown waterfront park docks, Thompson Boat Center, or right at Tony and Joe’s Seafood Place to grab dinner during sunset.

Pro Tip : Anchoring near the Georgetown waterfront will provide you with the perfect view of dc’s infamous Fourth of July fireworks extravaganza, and allows you to skip the crowds that pack into the Mall. Book early, as rentals fill up fast to secure the best vantage point from the water.

Dock at the East Potomac Park for a nice stroll along the shoreline, which is lined with Washington, dc’s beloved cherry blossom trees. Plan ahead to pack lunches so you can head to the Southern tip of the park to set up a picnic and enjoy quiet views of the capital. Make sure to go to the Northern end of the island to see the Thomas Jefferson Memorial (or just cruise by it via boat). Keep in mind, the National Cherry Blossom Festival takes place in Washington, DC from March 20 through April 16, providing the very best opportunity to see these cherry blossoms in full bloom.

Pro Tip :  The East Potomac Park dock is the only place to dock on the island. If you need a break from the water, there are several sports facilities throughout the park, like a golf course and tennis courts.

Where to Go Boating in Washington, DC

The Chesapeake Bay

The Chesapeake Bay

Boating in the Chesapeake Bay means boating in a historic waterway that connects you to an endless amount of adventures in multiple states, from the District of Columbia to Virginia and Maryland, up into Delaware, New York, Pennsylvania and even West Virginia. With so much to explore, each boating trip you plan can be one of a kind—trust us, just one day of boating in the Chesapeake Bay is never enough. Hop on a pontoon and bring the children for a cruise to Sandy Point State Park for swimming near beaches. Or book a fishing boat rental or fishing charter, and cast a line for everything from largemouth bass in brackish river waters, to striped bass and flounder, or even head offshore for cobia and black drum.

Target fish species : Varies depending on what part of the bay you are in, but you can expect: striped bass (upper bay), bluefish and Spanish mackerel (lower bay), speckled sea trout, red drum, rockfish, and some largemouth bass.

Pro Tips : The Chesapeake Bay is endangered by sewage plants that dump their polluted water into the bay. Make sure to learn these  green boating practices to keep the bay as precious as you found it.

Best places to explore : The Chesapeake Bay provides access to top boating destinations like Havre de Grace, St. Michaels, Smith Island, the National Harbor, Tangier Island, Ocean City (MD), Annapolis, Edgewater, and many more mid-Atlantic coastal hideaways.

Potomac River

Potomac River

The Potomac River, running through Washington, DC and connecting Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland, lies at the heart of the DMV region and has even been dubbed the ‘Nation’s River’ by President George Washington. Stretching 380-miles before emptying into the Chesapeake Bay near Point Lookout, MD, the Potomac is a water-lovers playground, ripe for boating and fishing. Any history buffs out there? Plan a boat rental to cruise south to Mount Vernon, and on your way back to DC, make sure to stop in Old Town Alexandria for fresh seafood. The Potomac is also your go-to route sightseeing all of DC’s hottest attractions—from the monuments to The Wharf—and will connect you to the Anacostia River, which takes you right by Nationals Park, the home of Major League Baseball’s Washington Nationals.

Target fish species : Striped bass, snakehead, largemouth and smallmouth bass, and catfish.

Pro Tips : With so many different areas around the DMV to explore via the Potomac River, we highly recommend booking your boat with a local, licensed captain. Not only can they serve as your tour guide, sharing location history and pointing out areas of interest during your cruise.

Lat/Long : 38.9072° N, 77.0369° W

Lake Anna, VA

Lake Anna, VA

Just a quick 90-minute drive south from the heart of the DMV, Lake Anna, VA is the go-to weekend escape for both local boaters and visitors to Washington, DC and its surrounding cities. Known by locals for its ‘cold’ and ‘warm’ sides of the lake, this hidden gem has boat-up restaurants, breweries, lakeside wineries, and ample room for on-water activities. Get out on the lake early to secure a prime spot at one of the many island beaches or sandbars, or join a raft-up at one of the party coves. Grab dinner and drinks at Tim’s at Lake Anna, The Cove at Lake Anna, or Lake Anna Taphouse, before wrapping up your day watching the sunset on the water.

Target fish species : Largemouth bass, striped bass, hybrid striped bass, bluegill, yellow perch, walleye, white perch, and black crappie.

Pro Tips : Some of Lake Anna’s most popular local hot spots may be difficult to find for new boaters to the area. For the best experience, book your rental with a captain who can navigate the lake, handle any potential raft-ups, and serve as your designated sober skipper.

Best places to explore : The Sandbar, Pirate’s Cove, Cocktail Cove, The Bahamas, Pleasants Landing Beach, and the Lake Anna State Park.

We were a party of 7, one afraid of boats and the water. The process to book the charter was smooth. All questions were answered quickly. Payment options were nice for our group. Entrance is at the wharf by gordon Ramsay's hells kitchen. The greeting we got at the gate...yaaasss! The waiting area was super nice, with bathrooms available. Ms. Taylor came to get us and escort us to the 38-foot "LUXURY" yacht we had booked. We had Captain Ed and Ms. Taylor as deckhand serving us our drinks we brought. They did have a thing of ice water, which was nice. The boat was nice. Comfortable for us. There was an air-conditioned downstairs "inside area" with a bathroom and kitchen area (bedroom too), but we stayed upstairs and in front when we were allowed. Linking up to the blue tooth for music was easy. Had an amazing time and had amazing weather. Got a tour of the larger boat... and already my party of 7 are thinking of bachelorette plans in the future. I have lived in the area for so long and never thought to do this. Saw an IG ad.over a yesr ago. I charter boats in other states often, but never in DC.

We had a great time Celebrating my 60th birthday on June 10th 2023. Captain QT and her wonderful crew were amazing and we can't wait to sail with her team again

yacht rental dc black owned

Captain QT & her son were very nice, I would give their service 5 stars but once arriving for our scheduled boat ride the boat had maintenance issues & would not start. That took away nearly 30 minutes of my groups time & when our scheduled time was up we were RUSHED off the boat because she had another group coming directly after. Once we were on the water the ride was nice and safe. We were allowed to play music & bring our own food, drinks, etc. I did not like that she recorded us on the boat though. I understand promoting your business on social media but I would have liked to be warned before "going live". I do not like when people know exactly where I am at that moment as I do not have bigger than normal following on social media. Anyone could be watching and anything could've happened once we got back to the dock. Also, let people enjoy what they paid for without having a phone in their face. She mentioned refunding us a portion of the money due to the maintenance hold up but she stopped answering the phone and texts from my friend who rented through her. If you are a private person I would not recommend this service. If you do use this service, I would call ahead to make sure the boat is already running by the time you pull up to the dock.

Thank you for your message and we appreciate your business. We apologize for the inconvenience of the maintenance challenges, but they are a common risk for all boaters. We were successful in overcoming those challenges for your tour and, as we informed your group, had we not been successful, we had other luxury yachts available on site. Additionally, you may not have the most accurate information about the refund since you were not the host for your group. Your host was first refunded during your boat tour itself. Additionally, after we received a follow-up message from your host giving us an update about your group size, she was refunded in full as of 7/19/21. In regards to going live on social media, we did ask your group in advance before we went live and the consensus agreed (without any objections). We always do that. Thank you again for doing business with Be You Yacht Tours.

We had the most fantastic time today celebrating my friend's birthday with Captain QT and her wonderful crew. We were a group of four, and we enjoyed a beautiful sunset and moon rising while taking in the sights and sounds of the Potomac. It was the perfect way to relax with chosen family. We will be booking her vessel again. Kudos to such an awesome local,woman-owned business that's disrupting the status quo while providing an unforgettable experience. Do yourself a favor and book today!

We had the best time on our painting and sailing adventure with my retiree friends. Captain QT and her crew were professional and extremely accommodating to make sure we had a great experience. We felt safe and cared for as we were free to enjoy the food, painting, music, and beautiful sailing experience. I highly recommend the experience and will be returning with my family in the very near future.

What a PERFECT time! I was so pleased with our cruise experience, the service was top notch and the food was delicious! Nashawn's team was extremely professional and friendly, and the boat had everything we needed. We played music via the speakers and enjoyed the views and breeze from the water. I highly recommend this wonderful black-owned business, you will not be disappointed!

I had the opportunity to join my BFFs on a Paint and Sip cruise with Captain QT. She and her team were very professional and placed the customers first to ensure we had an awesome and safe experience. It was definitely one of my best Paint and Sip events. The food was nothing short of delicious. The Captain was very accommodating and friendly which made the event a great experience. I highly recommend this company if you are looking to hangout and have fun! You won't be disappointed.

#1 Boat Rental In The DMV ★★★★★

Me and my husband had a great time doing a two-hour evening ride. You can bring your own drinks and play your own music, but the best part is really taking in the views. Everything was great from start to finish. Booking online was simple and you can fill out the waivers online ahead of time. I would definitely recommend this experience!

Very nice for a friends outing or date night! We went late afternoon/early evening and it's still pretty hot (late June) but once we took off it was cooler with a breeze. Enjoy the ride and take in great views along the Potomac. It's BYOB and you can connect your music to the boat's Bluetooth. Overall great time and our driver Jafari waited for us even though we were late. Make sure to use your phone for accurate directions, you'll walk though a tall gate past an office to get to the docks. We got a Little confused at first.

Have to show some love to this innovative company that popped up at the perfect time. A tiny pod on a tiny boat trying to celebrate a protracted Halloween, we wondered how we can show off our cute outfits but also stay safe and distant....enter....Yachtsy. Need to take advantage of a gorgeous day with friends or family? Yachtsy. A creative and romantic date idea? Yachtsy!

What do you do in the time of COVID-19 when you want to be out with friends, not pay a billion dollars at a bar where you can only be seated with so many people, enjoy the weather, and do something a little bit different? You rent a boat with Yachtsy. It was super easy to set up, the boat driver was right on time and super polite and you never got the feeling that he was wishing he were somewhere else. Its BYOB, which, how can you beat that!? and you can bring your own munchies. This was a great time and everyone in my group said we needed to do it again once it cooled down. Def check it out.
