One of the most popular homegrown restaurant chains in Cornwall has opened its new premises and has made history while doing it.

Sam's, which runs five diners and bars in the Duchy, has opened its sixth restaurant at the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club (RCYC) in Falmouth - meaning non-members are allowed to visit the club for the first time in its history.

Emma Sixton, who runs the business with husband Sam, said: "This is a great new collaboration in an amazing place right on the harbour. It’s been an absolute pleasure working here ... amazing staff. We just need to get word out to the public to let them know they can come in."

Sam’s at The Royal Cornwall Yacht Club serves members and non-members fish and seafood specialities, burgers, meat and vegetarian dishes, alongside afternoon high tea and fizz, tapas and cocktails.

The restaurant , which opened last month, was a regular haunt for the CNN team when the American news station was covering the G7 Summit while based at the yacht club.

Sam's stated: "Feeding and watering up to 28 reporters, correspondents, anchor teams, production team, camera crews, operations, security, engineers, drivers, was an absolute pleasure. An unexpected opportunity we inherited when we joined the RCYC and an absolute pleasure.

"By all accounts CNN would be keen for us to travel and feed them wherever they were in the world."

The venue has already started receive positive reviews, including the two responses below.

"Stunning waterside setting, friendly relaxed service, great food. Chilled rose, delicious garlic bread, perfectly cooked steak and a superb monkfish special. Everything we love about other Sam's venues, but with a more muted yacht club ambience and a view to die for."

"Cracking lunch at the new Sam’s at the RCYC. Lovely staff and fantastic cooking. Give it a go, you won’t regret it!"

Sam's has other restaurants in Fowey (the original business which opened in 1987), on the beach at Polkerris, in the city at Truro and also at Par and on the Roseland peninsula near Veryan.

James Strawbridge wrote an article on Sam’s for Cornwall Life magazine:

Burgers and chips or pizza used to conjure up images of poor quality junk food and greasy-spoons, but over the years there has been a growing scene for fast-food lovers with a conscience. I count myself as a major fan of the genre – local produce and seasonal ingredients served up with style, fries and no frills – indulgent comfort food with a strong American influence. This is why I admire Mr Sam Sixton – for giving me cheeseburgers to die for, pizza that leaves you guilt-free and now pop-up menus with a host of great food to enjoy on the beach – all with a killer soundtrack…

The Royal Cornwall Yacht Club welcomes sailors of all ages and abilities to our club.

Located within a Grade II listed clubhouse on a 17 th  century private quayside, the club overlooks spectacular views of Falmouth, Flushing, Carrick Roads and beyond. RCYC was formed in 1871, and continues to hold close its traditional values whilst extending a warm welcome to new members.

As a club, we enjoy first class sailing. We host regular club racing as well as world-renowned sailing events. Whilst there is a focus on yacht sailing, we are enthusiastic supporters of dinghy sailing and motor boating interests.

Year round the club runs frequent social events including lectures, tuition and charity fundraising events. Our dining and bar facilities are open all year.

Racing Events

The azores and back race aka the azab.

The AZAB (Azores and Back) is a Category 1 ocean yacht race with each of the two legs being 1,170 nautical miles even if the rhumb line can be sailed! The Azores and Back Race was created in response to the desire for an ocean race which started and finished in the UK, a wish that was taken up by the RCYC’s Colin Drummond in 1975 and has been run every four years since. The race is for all comers, from experienced racers sailing high-performance boats to local cruisers in need of a challenge.

The next race will leave Falmouth in June 2027 for Ponta Delgada on São Miguel Island, one of the nine Azores Archipelago Islands that lie in the Eastern Atlantic. Following a rest, replenishing and several parties they will depart to race back to Falmouth.  The 1975 race was for single handers only. Between 1979 and 2019 both single and double handers were included. In 2023 the ‘silverware’ remained for shorthanded entries sailing either single or double handed but a new division was introduced for yachts with a maximum of four crew including the skipper. This ‘crewed’ division will race for glassware. The five starts will be for Multihulls, Class 1, Class 2, Class 3 and Class 4 regardless of crew numbers.

The Azorean stopover allows preparation for the challenge of the return journey but is also a great chance for crews to celebrate their achievements from leg one, socialise with fellow participants and see something of São Miguel. Several functions are put on by the RCYC and Clube Naval de Ponta Delgada, and the Pontoon Party which competitors traditionally run is always a very enjoyable event.

MailASail, the Title Sponsor for the 2019 and 2023 events are specialists in coastal and offshore communications, and helped improve communication systems for participants of the race, including facilitating on-board blog posts and updates, meaning that following the race is even more exciting for participants and spectators alike. This level of communication was introduced in the 2019 race brought a whole new dimension. Blogs from several of the competitors provided unmissable reading.

Tracking will again be in place allowing those at home to follow progress and provisional race positions.
