Paul Erling Johnson (1938-2021): Iconoclastic yacht designer and ocean rambler

paul johnson yacht for sale

A world-renowned sailor, builder of boats and frequent caller on Bermuda was recalled by friends for his motto in life: “Never be afraid to be terrified.”

Paul Erling Johnson, famed for crossing the Atlantic alone in a sailboat at 16, died last month in the Caribbean island of Carriacou where he lived aboard his last boat, Cherub . He was 83.

Many of his boats were popular in Bermuda and are still sailed.

Born on a sailboat on the Hamble river in England, Mr Johnson spent his life aboard various boats of his design.

John Frith, who with his wife Gillian and their children lived and sailed aboard one of Mr Johnson’s creations, said he was “magnetic, with a great sense of humour”.

Larger than life and devoted to the sea, Mr Johnson was something of a professional vagabond who “never had any money – he would tell his stories and people would feed him well”, his friend added.

“He was an unforgettable character,” Mr Frith said. “We met him when he sailed into Bermuda – we were interested in anybody who would do that. He had an amazing history of crossing the Atlantic Ocean single-handed.

“Many people in Bermuda knew him well because of his character.”

The two formed an informal company in the 1970s, Venus Yachts, to build boats to Mr Johnson’s specifications.

Mr Frith said: “His boat designs are still being bought and sold around the world. His boats are not a modern type but based on an old Norwegian design.

“We sailed 100,000 miles in ours, Moon – we bought our three children up aboard the boat.”

Mr Johnson built a “carbon copy” of the Friths’ boat, and called it Venus .

Mr Frith said he was also an accomplished painter, with three of his works still at the couple’s home in Paget.

He added that Mr Johnson was “a great aficionado of rum; I believe he is being buried with a bottle in Carriacou”.

A 2013 profile in the magazine Sailing World hailed him as a “legend” to sailors worldwide, with a cult following for designs that blended old with new.

“Suddenly, the trendiest people in the traditional world of yachts were yearning for Paul Johnson designs in wood, fibreglass, and steel.

“At one point, there were five new Paul Johnson designs match racing in Bermuda’s Hamilton Harbour.”

He told the magazine he had no idea how many times he had sailed across the Atlantic, adding: “Heavy weather doesn’t bother me or my vessels. In fact, I rather enjoy being scared. It makes one feel alive.”

His friend Ken Matthews, of West Palm Beach in Florida, said Mr Johnson’s exploits were captured in a 2018 documentary, The Sailor, as well as numerous books and articles.

After a stint in the Royal Navy in the Shetland Islands, Mr Johnson took to the sea aboard an 18-foot dinghy built in 1895, and ended up spending much of his life in the Caribbean.

Mr Matthews said he had three children a son, Magnus Johnson, of Flores Island in the Azores; a daughter, Eliala Salvadori of Amsterdam, and another son, Merlin Johnson of Florida.

A Chat with Sailing Legend Paul Johnson

  • By Cap'n Fatty Goodlander
  • Updated: March 22, 2013

Paul Johnson with sextant

After a seven-year absence from the Caribbean, I’m happy to report that it’s still a safe haven for unconventional people. Take, for example, the yacht designer Paul Erling Johnson, now 74 years old. He’s currently living aboard and hard aground on his coffee grounds in Carriacou, in the Grenadines.

The last few years haven’t been easy for Paul. The problem isn’t sailing or the sea, it is the land. It can be treacherous. There are hidden dangers everywhere. There has been a succession of crazy shore adventures: He recently went to sleep on a discarded sheet of plywood on the beach and became a lethal (to himself) projectile when a frisky gust of wind sent him airborne over the harbor. His own 18-foot dinghy managed to land on him at the outset of a hurricane, thrusting a piece of its stem through his right calf. More recently, in the parking lot of the local grocery store, Paul mistakenly thought that all the screaming white folks were fans of his design work, not that he was about to be run over by a truck.

“The nurses at the local emergency room are sick of seeing me,” Paul admitted ruefully during our recent visit. He put down his water glass of rum in a studied manner so he could point to the spots where various bits of boats and houses and trucks have impaled his once-bronzed body.

I was a pre-teen when the 16-year-old Paul Johnson became my hero by sailing across the Atlantic in a beat-up, 18-foot lapstrake gaffer named Venus . Even back then, in the 1960s, he had a clear vision of who he was and what he was doing. Modern yacht design was off on a wrong tangent, he believed. The lofty Marconi rig was truly good only for racing hard on the wind, something that ocean-crossing sea gypsies didn’t do very often. Why put all that strain on the rigging? Why even have backstays? Gaff-riggers were cheaper, safer, faster, and more easily repaired. They were altogether superior in every way.

A cult sprang up around him. Sure, such designers as Dick Newick, Bob Perry, Gary Hoyt, Charlie Morgan, and Jim Brown all had fans and devotees, but only Paul was The One. Suddenly, half of the traditional sailboats being built by amateurs on a shoestring budget weren’t referred to as traditional or gaffers . They were reverently called Paul Johnson designs .

Paul blended the old and the new in unique and seamless ways. He quickly embraced PVC and Airex coring materials, which gave his vessels light displacement. And his designs, sporting a very modern run aft in the buttocks lines, were fast, fast, fast off the wind.

“Sure, the Marconi rig has advantages when you’re hard on it,” he’d say, “but once you crack off a tad, the power of the gaff offers clear advantages. With a gaffer, you can harness more power more quickly, and in a safe, controllable way. You don’t have to luff up to douse or hoist. The center of gravity is low, so there’s less roll. The result can be an almost maintenance-free ocean vagabond that can stay offshore for very long periods of time for very little money.”

Back in the late 1960s, Paul said, “Most modern boats are like governments. They look good on paper, despite the fact they don’t work too well in reality.” In the big picture, though, not many agreed. The yacht assembly lines in America and Taiwan rolled out their profitable look-alike cookie-cutter craft, with more attention paid to the sales brochure than to the hull. The IOR racer/cruiser dominated. But so what? Paul didn’t care. He refused to suffer fools gladly. He wasn’t running a popularity contest; he was designing practical, ocean-worthy boats that could put to sea and stay there.

Why should he pay attention to the quibbles of the harbor queens, the club racers, the naysayers? So what if the landlubbers thought he was totally nuts: All the better! And those few contrarian sailors who did agree with Paul Johnson became, well, disciples, if you will.

You didn’t just build a Paul Johnson design. You took up The Cause.

Dozens of Paul Johnson boats started springing up under palm trees in Bermuda, the Azores, and the Lesser Antilles. John Frith got involved with his Moon . Peter Muilenburg started Breath on St. John. Lulu Magras of St. Barts purchased Pluto . Bruce Smith glued up Woodwind . Shadrock, Cherub , and dozens of others splashed.

Suddenly, the trendiest people in the traditional world of yachts were yearning for Paul Johnson designs in wood, fiberglass, and steel. At one point, there were five new Paul Johnson designs match racing in Bermuda’s Hamilton Harbour.

And Paul fed the PR fire on many diverse levels.

National Fisherman did an in-depth article. Other publications, like Yachting Monthly , sent reporters. Paul was suitably elusive and cryptic—but not too elusive or cryptic.

Who was that rum-reeking, Shakespeare-quoting sailing madman on The Today Show in New York? Surely, that couldn’t be—wait, is that Paul Johnson on Larry King’s radio show?

“I’ve seen your boat, Paul,” said Larry King. “And I wouldn’t sail it across the Miami River!”

“And given what I know of your sailing skills,” Paul replied, “that’s very wise, Larry.”

Best of all, Paul Johnson put his money where his mouth was. One year, he sailed from England to the Caribbean, then unexpectedly received a commission there to build one of his own 42-foot Venus designs. One problem: His tools were in Jolly Ole, and winter had arrived. “Tsk, tsk,” said Paul, who then nonchalantly sailed back to England and returned to the Caribbean without comment. That made four transatlantic passages for the year, two of them made in the dead of winter, and all accomplished without damage or fuss.

“Try that with a lofty, modern IOR production boat!” he taunted any who’d listen.

No one took up the challenge.

“Heavy weather doesn’t bother me or my vessels,” Paul said. “In fact, I rather enjoy being scared. It makes one feel alive!”

How many transatlantics has Paul done?

“I can’t remember precisely,” he admits during our chat, peering down into his glass for answers. “At least 30-some, but who can say, really?”

In the day, if Paul needed money, he’d hastily dash off an oil painting or two. The rich folk would snatch them up gratefully. Renaissance man was a phrase muttered deferentially wherever Paul sailed.

The women in Paul’s life are ageless. When he was a teenager, they were in their early 20s—and they still are, 50 years later.

“The ladies are better sailors,” he contends. “They work harder and are more willing to learn. Why, just recently, I had a lovely 23-year-old deckhand for a couple of years.”

I first met Paul in the late 1970s on St. Barts. He was already a designer/builder legend. His distinctive designs were being built all over the world. He was on the cutting edge of both traditional and ultra-cheap yacht construction. He’d work all day in his cedar-scented Gustavia boat shed, surrounded by scantily clad French models draping themselves about in hopes of sensuously mixing up some epoxy for him. Then he’d retire to the famous Le Select to attempt to drink the island dry. He was as handsome as Byron: barrel-chested, wild-haired, and well-muscled. He wasn’t arrogant, precisely, just dead right, and he knew it.

In his heyday, Paul could’ve modeled for Michelangelo’s King Neptune. He had not only the physique but the mental intensity as well. A spotlight followed him around. His entourage was international: a French poet, a Spanish artist, an Italian actress, a Dutch abstractionist, a Polish violinist.

He was untamed, and his lusty appetites were enormous. People wanted to share his raw passion and to witness such classic, unbridled hedonism. A succession of Beautiful People —Lulu Magras, Mad Murphy, Jean Claude, Joe Green, Bruce Smith, Jenny May—trooped through his epoxy-splattered boat shed in Gustavia. Former girlfriends and ex-wives came and went, trailing children and divorce lawyers and other shoreside vexations. Palimony, matrimony, alimony, and plain baloney were all the same to Paul.

What did it matter what some freeway-addled stateside judge proclaimed when the Caribbean trade winds were fair and the distant horizon clear?

If there has been one big insurmountable problem in Paul’s life, it was the wicked women of his design disciples. They just didn’t seem to get it. They didn’t stay under his spell like their eager, wanderlust-smitten husbands. So these devious women continuously and quietly sniped away, pointing out the bloody obvious: Paul never grew up. He never settled down, never signed on the dotted line. Never bowed. Never stayed put. Never took the blame. Never paid—what’s the expression?—the wages of sin.

Puritans hated Paul Johnson and the strong drink in his mighty fist and the lusty song of freedom that sprung from his larger-than-life heart.

It was then that the Pacific beckoned. Yet another young lady agreed to be shanghaied. Alas, there are a lot of tiny dots in the Pacific, and some of them are very, very hard. Paul hit one. His vessel sank. But, his 18-foot dory-style dinghy was nearly as big as his original escape craft, so they piled into that for another 1,500 miles or so of Pacific fun.

Money appeared. Another vessel was whipped up, but this one didn’t last, either. It, too, slipped beneath the sea.

Today, he lives aboard one of his beloved designs in the island backwater called Carriacou. If he’s too ill to come ashore, a young, local yachtie girl heats up some leftovers and rows over. Paul then pours on the famous charm and slips in a sea yarn or two for payment.

“Is that you, Fatty?” he asks as my wife, Carolyn, and I circle his gaffer while standing on the deck of Ganesh , our 43-foot French-built ketch. “Of course I’ll come for dinner!” He keeps us laughing until the wee hours with his bawdry sea stories.

Finally he’s ready to go, but there’s one final question. “I’ve been considering sailing back across the Pond to the Azores,” he says. “Or maybe just into the lee of Tobago for the remainder of hurricane season. What you say? Which is the better choice?”

I look at the growth on his anchor rode, his sun-weary halyards, those tattered bits of baggywrinkle drooping to the deck of his nearby boat.

Yes, time has passed. Yes, none of us are quite what we once were. And yet—despite it all—there’s still fire in Paul’s belly. The horizon beckons. Why not one more grand sailing adventure?

“Both are pleasant this time of year,” I said. “I’m sure you’ll have a wonderful passage either way.”

He smiles. We’re sailors. We’re home upon the sea. Our vessels are our seashells as long as they are afloat. Screw the scolding doctors, the bean-counters, and those bloody Dirt Dwellers!

It takes him a long time to crawl into his battered dory and swing his twisted limbs into place. He coughs and clutches his chest. Finally, breathing heavily, he casts off his painter.

“I’m sure I will,” he says ever so softly as he sculls away into the inky blackness of Tyrell Bay.

The yacht has cruised extensively around the south coast and English Channel in present ownership and only the pressures of a young family force the sale.  In her relatively short lifetime, she has clocked up several blue water passages with a voyage to West Africa, the Caribbean and home in the 90’s.  She proved to be fast and seaworthy averaging 135 miles/day on a trade wind crossing to the Caribbean, very respectable indeed for a yacht with a waterline length of 24’.  Easily handled by one or two people, this is a very capable boat and a fantastic value cruising yacht.

Born in Ottawa, Kirby worked on newspapers in his home town and Montreal and was an avid dinghy racer, competing in the International 14 class. After reportedly losing a race at Cowes in England, Kirby, who had no formal training as a yacht designer, drew his own plan for an International 14 that he called the Kirby Mark 1. He is said to have sold 30 of his Kirby Mark 1 designs early on. The boats went to sell a total of 739. Kirby is quoted as saying, “I had a copy of Skene’s Elements of Yacht Design . If you can understand 50% of what’s in that book, you can design a boat. Design isn’t brain surgery. We should always pretend that it is, but it’s really not.”

After years spent sailing International 14’s, Kirby switched to the Finn class and won a place on the Canadian Olympic team. In 1956, Bruce moved to the Finn class and made the Canadian Olympic team that year and in 1964. He switched again to the Star class in 1968 and once more sailed for Canada in the Olympics.

Other successful boats that Kirby designed include the Sonar, Kirby 25 and Ideal 18, America’s Cup Twelve Meters; San Juan 24 and 30. He designed offshore racing boats like the 40-foot Admiral’s Cup contender Runaway , various cruising designs, and plywood Sharpie boats for DYI builders.

Kirby was widely acknowledged by the sailing world for his contributions to the sport. He was inducted into both the Canadian and US Sailing Hall of Fame, the World Sailing Hall of Fame, the International Yacht Racing Hall of Fame, the International Laser Class Association Hall of Fame, the Canadian International Fourteen Foot Dinghy Hall of Fame, and the City of Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame. He was also awarded the Order of Canada, the nation’s second highest civilian award.

Kathy Dyer Kathryn Anne (Kathy) Dyer, a long-serving judge on international race committees and juries, died on December 13, 2021 in Hamilton, Ontario. She was 66. Dyer was well known as an international judge in the sail racing world. She was active for decades at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club and has been cited as a mentor and instructor to many women in international sail racing.

Paul Erling Johnson English sailor and boat designer Paul Erhling Johnson died on June 28, 2021 aboard his boat Cherub at the island of Carriacou. He was 83 years old. His motto in life was reportedly, “Never be afraid to be terrified.” Johnson was also quoted as saying, “Heavy weather doesn’t bother me or my vessels. In fact, I rather enjoy being scared. It makes one feel alive.” Johnson may have made as many as 30 transatlantic passages.

Johnson was born on a sailboat on the Hamble River in England and by age 16 had made a solo crossing of the Atlantic to the Caribbean, where he spent most of his life. Johnson and friend John Frith started a company in the 1970s called Venus Yachts to build Johnson’s designs. Frith was quoted in Bermuda’s The Royal Gazette as saying about Johnson’s boats: “His boat designs are still being bought and sold around the world. His boats are not a modern type but based on an old Norwegian design. We sailed 100,000 miles in ours, Moon ….” At one point there were reportedly five new Paul Johnson designs match racing in Bermuda’s Hamilton Harbor.

A 2018 film documentary by Lucia Kašová, The Sailor (www.toxpro.sk/portfolio/sailor/) captured Johnson’s situation late in life. His exploits were also covered in various books and magazine articles.

Myself and a friend, namely John Bonnet, boughtCutlass, incidently a name we gave her, from Bill Gillkerson in about 1963.Met Paul, who showed us around his father's boat, his ambition then to sail it singled handed,I think, non stop around the world.I don't know whether he achieved that ambition?.I wonder if Bill told the story of Paul seeing a ghost on Cutlass? or maybe this was a story to add to the romantic appeal of the boat,ie a sales pitch! I think I might order the book. Tony Fletcher

Phyllis and I had left Portugal on Morgan’s Cloud  just after a storm and got in at Porto Santo just ahead of another one…and the middle part of the two day passage was no picnic. Since arriving we had been hanging on at anchor by our fingernails, waiting for a gap to head for the Canaries, as one gale after another howled over the breakwater.

As we sat in the cockpit one afternoon, a small gaff rigged ketch appeared, beating through the arms of the breakwater. At the helm was a wild haired and bushy bearded man dressed in a pareo and an old tweed jacket.

The man guided the ketch deftly and purposefully toward us with one of his bare feet on the tiller, making the task of beating into a small harbour, raked with gusting multi-directional winds, look easy.

As the ketch crossed our stern, a biscuit toss away, the skipper yelled,

John, we’re twelve days out of Falmouth, d’you have any rum?

Oh, one detail I forgot to mention, it was January.

Dennis K. Biby

…wild haired, bearded, naked, drinking womanizer, and above all sailor seeks woman with brains, grit, strength, toughness and knowledge of the sea for “platonic” (kidding) relationship.

My new personal ad – please reply! Please feign knowledge of Moitessier.

Yes Paul, twas “…deeply stupid and unseamanlike” but isn’t the real question – “Will someone rescue my clueless ass (USCG), pay for my stupidity (insurance), or represent me (lawyer) to blame someone else?”

Dennis s/v Ferrity

“These seamen all share a combination of brains, grit, strength, toughness and, above all, knowledge and love of the sea, which all distills into exceptional seamanship.”

Or perhaps they are crazy – who are we to judge?

John Harries

Half daft, and bloody good sailor

pat synge

…. and then there was Mike Bales the retired RN submariner who criss-crossed the Pacific for decades aboard Jellicle his flush deck Folkboat: one hand on the tiller and one on the pump. He who slogged to windward when most of us were loathe to head downwind. Curried sardines and rice anyone?

There you go, another one. Of course being a submariner may have something to do with it. I have known a two: charming, unbelievably brave, but definitely a few fish short of a quintal, as they say in Newfoundland.

richard (s/v lakota)

fascinating post…i remember crossing from nyc to st georges in early march as a twelve-year-old with my transferring u.s.n. father and my mother and wishing i had never been born because the conditions were so rough…sky totally slate grey the entire time, spray-filled chilled air, and endless breakers on the sea surface…oh, and this was on the ocean monarch…30,000 tons of passenger ship…at least i learned early on to avoid these parts until well into spring although once in bermuda our weather problems dissipated instantly…i was naively asleep in our warm and dry cabin at dawn while we entered st georges…what an experience that would have been to witness entry through that narrow opening on board a ship although i later did it several times under sail as an adult…cheers

meant to say above that i think lin and larry pardey fall into this category of seamanship…several circumnavigations with engineless boats they built themselves with only minor scrapes along the way…heck, larry and paul even resemble each other…cheers again

Marc Dacey

Larry, Paul and Sir Robin Knox-Johnson all look alike. I think it must be a rule that if you sail naked on old boats for 20 years, you sprout a mop of hair and the bushiest of untamed beards. It’s a tribute to the Neptune that has yet to kill you.

Sid Shaw

John, Thanks for this piece on Paul Johnson. He truly is unique and “a legend in his own mind”. I first met him in 1965, in Martinique, when he had just sailed his 17′ yawl, VENUS, across the Atlantic. Rebecca & I again met him in 1971-72 on his 32′ boat built from wood salvaged from a church that he had razed. Then in November 1997, we encountered him, Paddy & infant Merlin while he was painting his 90-year old mother’s boat, prior to their winter Atlantic crossing.

In 1965, I also met Mike Bailes, on his Folkboat, in the Galapagos and Bernard Moitessier in Tahiti. Pat Synge neglected to say that when Mike Bailes was not pumping, he was using his non-tiller hand to pick weevils from his rice. He enjoyed slow passages since they resulted in a larger accumulation of beer money from his tiny RN pension, as he drank only while in port.

I have photos of both Paul on Venus and Mike on his boat, should you like copies.

Hi Paul Thanks for the offer: I would welcome a photo of Mike to add to our album (my email is: pat at boatstasmania.com.au ). What became of Mike? Any idea? We last met him in Sydney around 1984.

Ben Tucker

Jellicle was in wellington for a few years (around 1992 ish) getting a new deck fitted by a very hard working young guy who may have bought her off Mike? He put a small rounded deckhouse on her that looked very good.

Ben, I wonder if he then fitted a new hull to the deck!

Sid, are you sure he picked the weevils out of his rice? I thought they constituted added protein.

As for the long slow passages you mention. We were moored with him in Wallis Island waiting for the trades to moderate before heading off for Fiji when Mike upped and left. Destination: Tahiti – 1700 miles to windward.

Dan

Hi John I was touched by the video. Passion comes to mind. Not crazy or dangerous just simply connected like Moitessier. I think it’s the heart of passagemaking.

Hi Sid. I’d like the photo’s . Say hello to Rebecca aka OCC mom & dad, Cheers Dan & Kathy Halcyon

Nick Kats

On deck in rain in the nude.. highly unorthodox & highly practical. Reminds me of a Swede I heard about, who had a stainless steel toilet seat welded to the stern of his boat. He used it in all weather & swore by it.

Stainless steel toilet seat? I hope it came with a harness, a tether and a padeye, or I can imagine a new spot to lay down Treadmaster…

PAUL JOHANSEN

PAUL JOHANSEN is a massively constructed, steel hulled, expedition type motor yacht built originally to ice class certification.

PAUL JOHANSEN is one of 13 similar rescue vessels built between 1963 and 1972. While no longer classified as such, this vessel was built to Bureau Veritas standards.

She was originally stationed in northern Norway from where she experienced the high seas and inclement weather found in that part of the world.

In the mid 1990s PAUL JOHANSEN was converted into a private yacht. From 2012 the present owner, a former Swan owner, has invested significantly to upgrade all aspects of this yacht. She is fully found with the most recent of systems, including back-ups. PAUL JOHANSEN is ready for her next adventure.

  1. Paul Erling Johnson (1938-2021): Iconoclastic yacht designer and ocean

Paul Erling Johnson, famed for crossing the Atlantic alone in a sailboat at 16, died last month in the Caribbean island of Carriacou where he lived aboard his last boat, Cherub. He was 83. He was 83.

  2. A Chat with Sailing Legend Paul Erling Johnson

Take, for example, the yacht designer Paul Erling Johnson, now 74 years old. He's currently living aboard and hard aground on his coffee grounds in Carriacou, in the Grenadines.
