Taiwan Trawlers

Are they still worth owning.

' src=

You see them everywhere—on the hard, in marinas and, more importantly, in all the bays and coves of our popular cruising grounds—the ubiquitous Taiwan trawler. Are they, or are they not worth owning?

They came out of Taiwan in the 1970s and 1980s by the score, flooding a market that was looking for budget-priced cruising boats that were fun to own and economical to operate. Despite many of them being popped from the same mold, they were sold under a bewildering number of names—Albin, CHB, Cheer Men, C & L, DeFever, Hershine, La Paz, Marine Trader, North Sea, Puget Trawler and Universal, just to name a few.

TRAWLER STYLER

The hulls were constructed using a new material called fibreglass, and many were heavily over-built. But quality control was a problem and as a result some North American yards dismissed them out of hand, calling them “Taiwan tupperware” or “eastern junk.” Others recognized them for what they were—a great way to get families into boating at a modest price.

The truth lies somewhere in the middle, and the proof of their longevity is that, 40 years on, many still cruise the Pacific Northwest every season, owned by people who would have no other vessel. Where a new 36-foot trawler will set you back $500,000 or more today, many of those classics of the last century can be had for $50,000 to $100,000. And they’ve long stopped depreciating $15,000 per year.

While some of the 1970s era trawlers had problems with poor construction, after about 1981 the industry made significant changes in quality control, and there were fewer surprises. Many of the hulls were built in a central boatyard and then farmed out to family businesses for finishing. As a result, construction and detail varied widely. One boat might have intricately carved dragons on every interior door but poorly fitted wall panels; another might have beautifully finished bathrooms but leaky windows. Yet another would have strange electrical wiring but beautiful instrument panels.

Discovering poor workmanship later might involve stripping the teak decks to discover that half the screws were missing (a screw not used, was a spare screw for the next boat). Another discovery might be that the original fibreglass deck hadn’t been swept before the deck was laid. Bumps in the decking? No problem, just plane the teak planking flat, meaning thin and thick sections later.

It’s not surprising that some boaters wouldn’t set foot on one. But among the lemons there are peaches to be found. Speaking from personal experience, I searched for a specific style (a europa, rather than a sedan, tri-cabin or sundeck) for nearly two years, before finally buying one all the way across the country in upstate New York, then shipping it back to the Pacific Northwest on a truck! Why? Because it was exactly what I wanted. But I looked at a lot of boats in BC, Washington and as far away as the upper Columbia River in Oregon before finding that New York boat.

Today, dollar for dollar, they are some of the best deals in the leisure craft industry, and as some approach 50 years, many are still in fair shape. Usually powered with a single 120-horsepower Ford Lehman naturally aspirated diesel, or less often with a 130-horsepower Perkins, they aren’t great performers, chugging along at hull speed (six to eight knots), but burning a thrifty one litre per mile. Neither the Ford Lehman 6D380 nor the Perkins 6.354 are produced any more, but spares are still easy to find and reasonably priced.

While many potential buyers will see the low operating costs as a powerful incentive, we should add a note of caution—as with any older equipment, it helps to be handy for the inevitable things that break. But the main components, the hull, the deck, the engine and the layout can be solid (subject to some caveats listed below). Remember, wiring, instruments and tanks can be dealt with as and when necessary. In the meanwhile, the difference between that $250,000 vessel and your $50,000 one is sitting in your bank.

In the mid-‘70s, New Jersey entrepreneur Don Miller of Marine Trading International began importing a 34-foot aft cabin model from Taiwan, designed by marine architect Ed Monk. It was an immediate success. Where else could you get a complete cruiser, with parquet floor, instruments, smothered in teak, even curtains, for $25,000? It’s estimated that Miller imported over 3,000 trawlers in the following decade.

Copycats appeared almost immediately. Labour costs were cheap across the Pacific, and there followed a wild scramble as many small boatyards got into the fabrication business, jobbing out sub-contracts to family and friends, and then merging the finished trawlers under various marketing names. Don Miller’s boats, unsurprisingly, became known as Marine Traders.

Sinclair Wen owned the Chung Hwa Boat Building Co. where they produced CHBs and LaFitte sailboats. In the late 1970s he bought a share of the Kadey-Krogen line, which was producing the popular 42-foot cruiser. Apart from interior layout changes and a small increase in length (44 feet), that design has been in production for over 40 years!

Alexander Chu, who had worked at C&L, went on to start Ocean Alexander with a 50-foot pilothouse model that could be bought for $125,000. Today, its sequel, the 60-foot pilothouse, costs over a million. The company is still in business, manufacturing luxury yachts that have made their mark around the world.

Arthur DeFever designed a line of blue water cruisers that proved popular, although others quickly copied them. So was Bill Hardin’s classic Coaster 33. Originally built by CHB, it wasn’t long before look-alikes were coming out of all sorts of yards under the names of Heritage, Golden Gate, Bluewater, Far East and more. And the quality varied.

The habit of copying the industry leaders almost became an epidemic. A story from Don Miller illustrates the situation in the late 1970s. While at the boatyard in Taiwan, he ordered 23 changes to the design. Two weeks later back home, he saw that other importers were advertising the same 23 changes! It was a competitive market, and as Miller freely admitted, Taiwan trawlers weren’t the best boats, but they were very good value. They remain that today, in part because the exterior appearance of those early boats hasn’t changed much (unlike cars or houses). A 1978 36-foot Albin looks surprisingly similar to a 2001 Island Gypsy, or a brand new Grand Banks Classic. The tri-cabin design is timeless.

But times move on; where once they were mostly built in Taiwan, today many manufacturers have moved to China where the cost of labour is lower. As in Taiwan, the first few years’ models have had QC issues.

So, you’re thinking about a Taiwan trawler. First, decide which of the layouts will suit you best. You have kids? A sundeck or tri-cabin has the benefit of a bow cabin with bunks and head, separated from the aft master cabin and second head. It’s good to keep the noise apart. A tri-cabin, by the way, is sometimes called a double-cabin, as it has fore and aft sleeping cabins. The tri-cabin description just includes the central saloon in the cabin count.

Are you likely to be just a couple on board? The europa or sedan with a larger master cabin with centreline bed and small second cabin, with just a single head might be a better use of space. Plan to fish off the aft deck? A sedan or tri-cabin gives the best cockpit space.

Suffer from claustrophobia? The full width of the sundeck master cabin is a good option. Are you a light sleeper? Don’t buy a sedan or europa with the main cabin in the bow, where you’ll hear the lapping of waves all night on the hook. Bad knees? Avoid a europa with its steep companionway, where a tri-cabin lets you reach the upper helm in a series of short, easy stairs. Planning on spending time cruising in the shoulder seasons? Get a europa with its broad upper deck that screens the lower windows, and lets you leave the doors open, even when it’s raining.

Now that you have an idea of what you’re looking for, develop a relationship with a broker and a marine surveyor, both of whom specialize in trawlers. They are just like medical doctors—there are specialists in every field, and it helps to get advice from someone knowledgeable about trawlers, rather than luxury yachts or fast tugs or sailboats.

bluewater yachts taiwan

Before you call in the hired help, have a preliminary checklist for when you’ve found one you like. Your time is free. Taiwan trawlers can have leaky windows. Check for discolouration below the sills. They have a reputation for leaky decks. Water gets under the teak deck and runs to the lowest point, which is about 2/3 of the way toward the stern, at the deck’s lowest point, where it pools under the boards and finds a screw hole to penetrate the sub-deck. Does the deck feel soft there? Can you get into the engine room and see the underside of the deck? Is there visible water damage? That low point is often where the water tank fill pipe is. Does it look corroded?

Small deck areas can be repaired quite economically. Check the internet, especially trawler forums. There are several ways of curing a boat with small sections of soft deck, without ripping up everything and starting again.

Are there cracks where the superstructure abuts the deck? What this can suggest is not a soft superstructure, but a soft hull. It might mean the hull stiffeners aren’t doing their job. There are four beams (stringers) that run fore and aft along the inside of the hull. The middle pair usually carries the engine. Across those stringers, ribs stiffen the hull sideways. Over the long life of the boat, a prior owner may have drilled holes to run pipes or electrical cables. If bilge water has penetrated the stringers, the wood rots and the hull starts to flex in the swell. That in turn means anything attached to the hull (the engine alignment, prop shaft, upper cabin, deck penetrations), all flex too. Make sure that the surveyor checks the moisture content of the stringers.

In the superstructure, water penetration can soften the frame and be expensive to repair (usually from the inside). This is less of a problem on europas, which have a wide upper deck that sheds the rain. Like the hulls, the amount of structural material in the superstructure can vary from vessel to vessel, some being massively thick, others paper-thin. One check is to remove the shore power fitting to see the wall’s cross-section.

Another thing to consider is poor resin penetration of the fibreglass during construction. This usually manifests itself as spider web cracks and chips, exposing dry chopped mat beneath. Depending on where they are, they can be cosmetic, or can be the inlet for water that over time can destroy walls and decks. Hulls, on the other hand, were mostly over-resin coated, with the result that blistering and osmosis is less common. But certain brands had a bad reputation for poor hull construction. Make sure the surveyor does a thorough hammer check.

Tanks are another issue. Some old fuel tanks were welded steel. A flexing hull causes tanks to buckle and leak, usually at the welded corners. Tank removal is a slow process, but needn’t be a deal breaker. If you’re reasonably handy, grinding up an old tank into pieces to remove through the engine room hatch, and installing multiple small tanks (to fit through the same hole) is not as difficult as it initially appears.

When viewing a prospective boat, the engine room can tell its own story. Learn to read it. Rusty parts and junk lying about imply the owner either doesn’t care, or doesn’t go down there often. Polished pipes and oiled surfaces suggest regular servicing. Have an oil analysis done—it can tell you a lot about the bearings. Do the fuel and oil filters look new? Are the batteries clean on top? Does the wiring look tidy or tangled?

According to the late Bob Smith (engine guru), Ford Lehman engines, if looked after, can go for 20,000 hours before a rebuild on the block. Replacing peripherals like heat exchangers, pumps, hoses and exhaust manifolds are just part of the business of buying an older boat. Set aside an additional 15 percent of the purchase price for upcoming issues, and try to do as many of the repairs yourself. That way you’ll learn about your boat, and save yourself money.

Bright work is another concern for some buyers. All that magnificent outside teak needs to be stripped and re-varnished to retain the look. Modern varnish does last longer, or you can just let your rails go au natural. Weathered exterior teak shouldn’t be a reason to turn down a boat, but you’ll notice that since the 1990s, teak hand and cap rails have gone out of style because of the maintenance issue. That still leaves exterior window frames, handrails and trim. I’ve taken to painting them—a good marine paint lasts three to five years, whereas varnish lasts one to two.

The best advice when buying a Taiwan trawler is to educate yourself. Look at many models. Ask questions. Concentrate on the later models (1982 to 1990) as materials and construction methods did improve. Find a good marine surveyor for that day when you discover the one that ticks most of your boxes. And remember, no boat 30 to 45 years old will tick ALL the boxes.

Be realistic. Understand that most Taiwan-built trawlers aren’t blue water boats (there are a few exceptions). However, for sheltered cruising such as in the Salish Sea, they are perfect. And know that when you find that diamond in the coal heap, you’ll have a sturdy, seaworthy partner to share adventures with for as long as you’re both able to put to sea! Happy cruising.

bluewater yachts taiwan

Looking for information about bluewater yachts, a company from Minn that started some years ago to build customed ordered boats and built them in Taiwan. Does anyone have experience with these yachts? For a custom yacht the resale prices seem to be low. I cannot find a survey on one on the internet that says anything about the quality. There seem to be a lot of gas engines in these boat and a few diesels (not interested in gas). My wife and I are looking to buy a used live aboard trawler type boat to retire on in a couple of years. To make the loop and to go to the Bahamas. I may be looking at wrong places but any help/information would be verythankful.

Bluewater yachts It has been a while since I have seen one, but they looked like they were built more to run in protected waters or on a lake. The draft is pretty shallow if its the boat that I'm thinking about. They were more like houseboats than open water trawlers. They were a less expensive boat when they were new, which may account for the low price for their size.
Thanks dsharp and that may be true as alot of them are used in lakes, back in 2007 There was 52-58 ft anchored in Exumas when we were on a sailboat with friends for about 10 days. They were anchored out like the rest of us (about 45-50 boats) for a day or two and then we were in the dingy going off to snorkle and they beached it so guests/ladies could get off with out riding in a dingy and gettig wet (wind was blowing). When we got back about 3-4 hours later they were gone and that night folks talked about it, some not liking them and some said they were ok. (These are sail boat owners and most do not like boats if they are not powered sometimes by the wind...). Looking for some type of survey report to see if hull is solid, and does everything stay together, etc. There are some for sale on the net but most are gas, which means lakes/protected like you said Thanks for the info.

Bluewaters are in fact houseyachts (houseboats with a bow; a step up in sea handling). Very nice for the style. Others in it's class would be Harbor Master and Holiday Mansion. They can be a beast to dock because they have a lot of windage and very little draft. They're best for lakes and protected waters. If you're going to cross the Gulf Stream go for an actual trawler (or motoryacht, etc.). There's a reason you'll pay more than for a houseyacht.
Thanks NYCAP, that makes sense, we have looked at some trawlers but we want to look at everything. This will be slow process even in this market.

Bluewater I have seen a couple of these. One belonged to an acquaintance in Tennessee, docked it on the Tennessee River around Knoxville. Nice boat for the conditions. Have seen another one on Lake Michigan last summer. Nice condition, but was having a difficult time pulling into the fuel dock. Very long, low and wide. Lots of sail area. Would not be my 1st, or 2nd choice for the loop. But as a live-aboard, would probably be great.

I've run the 70' and crossed the Gulf Stream in it and ran it from Ft. Laud to the Exumas about two years ago. I crossed and it was 6ft. seas on the nose. I did 13knots, but it was completely stable, but a bit wet in that sea. BUT, for the loop (which I've done) where it's mostly protected water 80% of the time, it's a great boat. It also has a shallow draft so you could do parts of the loop I couldn't do in the 75' Hatteras MY I did the loop in. They're roomy, beamy, and actually handle pretty well considering. i didn't have any issues with the wind docking it.

For what you say you want it for, it'll be ok. I've taken them back and forth to Catalina from Newport Beach and Marina Del Rey a few times, as long as you pick your day weather wise, no big issues. They are put together mostly with what I call "Level 2 and 3" parts and hardware, (Level 1= pot metal and junk, Level 5= "gold plated") so on older ones be expecting to replace hinges, latches, stanchion hardware and the like, but that's no big deal and typical of any boat in that price range. You won't want to take it offshore and beat into a head sea, but for your application, you don't need to either. Good open space on them with lots of window area which many people really like since it prevents claustrophobia. I haven't dealt with one in a while, but I don't hear about the hulls falling apart. They also have a low air draft so you fit under a lot of bridges. Shallow draft is very nice for the Bahamas. If you can get a good deal on one that doesn't get beaten up too badly on survey and you and your wife like it, I don't see a reason not to get one. Arnold Schwrtzeneggar used to charter one.

friends of mine had one for few years, went up and down the coast and even to the bahamas with minimal problems, although they got beat up a couple times, but they made it. not my cup of tea... yes the shallow draft is nice (although there are many real boats with decent draft if you make that a priority) and for older folks the single level layout (staterooms/saloon/galley) is a big plus. those i've seen dont' seem to age very well, they're closer to houseboard and (nice) trailers/RVs than "yachts" in my opinion.

geriksen said: We work on lots of them here. (in fact have one up here in the yard right now) For a lake boat they are fine. One step up from a houseboat. Big party deck up top and lots of interior space. I agree on the low quality equip and hardware and most have gas engines. They make surprising speed with gas engines. However, they are fully cored boats and as I mentioned in another thread we had one stick a closet wall through a rotten (core) bottom. We have also had issues with recurring blisters on them (even after epoxy barrier coating). The local surveyors here also call the "flexible flyers" since they tend to bend and twist at speed. It is what it is.... On a lake I would rather have a Bluewater than a houseboat but my choice would be to not take one of those offshore. Click to expand...
To everyone, thanks for the information, we are looking and wanted to know what the feeling about this boat was and it appears it would/could have some unseen weaknesses. That is why I asked and really appriciate the information from folks who know. There is one in the Houston area we may look at just to look and compare. Have looked at some older Thompsons and Grand Banks. Both are good boats but need lots of upgrades. Thanks again

I too have been looking for a Bluewater. I'm wondering whats going on with them, their web is gone and the phones aren't answered. Did they fail with the rest of the economy?
I guess they did no phone no web site anymore. I think I will skip the blue waters

I own the 1984 Bluewater 47ft sedan cruiser. I've had it for 7 yrs. now and think, for the money it's the best yacht on the river. This is not the houseboat version, but the flybridge motor yacht. They only built it 3yrs 1982, 83, 84. I own the 1984 model. It will go 20Knots but burns a huge amount of gas so we usually run at 10Knots and enjoy the ride. It has a lot of room, both inside and out and is very comfortable with parties of 12 to 16 people. My wife and I live aboard in the summer and enjoy it very much, with a large kitchen and bathroom, an island queen in the master bedroom. The hull is solid fiberglass and the upper structure is cored with plywood. I have done some repairing to the core where some leaks have softened the wood, but nothing too serious. If you want a good looking practical yacht for a reasonable price this is it.

China detains Taiwanese fishing boat amid rising cross-strait tensions

Ben mcgrath 8 july 2024.

  • facebook icon

The China Coast Guard (CCG) of the People’s Republic of China last week seized a Taiwanese fishing boat and its five crew members in the waters around Kinmen Island, located just a few kilometers from the Chinese mainland. The incident follows other incidents in recent weeks and months and represents a further escalation of tensions around the Taiwan Strait, which is a dangerous flashpoint whipped up above all by US imperialism.

bluewater yachts taiwan

On July 2, two CCG vessels detained the Da Jin Man 88 fishing vessel in Beijing’s territorial waters, 23.7 nautical miles northeast of Kinmen Island (also known as Quemoy), which is administered by Taipei. The island, the largest in the Kinmen Island group, lies just 10 kilometers east of the city of Xiamen, Fujian Province.

The Chinese authorities ordered the boat to head for a nearby port in the mainland city of Jinjiang. In addition to the Taiwanese captain, the crew included four other members including another sailor from Taiwan and three from Indonesia. According to the CCG, the fishing vessel was detained for violating the annual summer fishing moratorium in place between May and August.

“The act was deemed detrimental to fishery resources and marine ecology,” stated CCG spokesman Liu Dejun. “The Fujian coast guard boarded the boat, and vessels from Taiwan attempting to interrupt their law enforcement were warned off in accordance with the law.” Taiwan’s Coast Guard Administration (CGA) dispatched seven ships in an attempt to stop the Da Jin Man being detained. A standoff between the two sides lasted for approximately 50 minutes.

Kuan Bi-ling, the head of Taiwan’s Ocean Affairs Council stated last Wednesday, “The incident involved a Taiwanese fishing boat operating in Chinese waters during China’s summer fishing moratorium. Consequently, the Chinese coast guard took law enforcement action.”

Despite this acknowledgment, Tsai Ming-yen, the director-general of Taiwan’s National Security Bureau (NSB), stated on Thursday that Taipei would proceed “with great caution and fully defend the legal rights of fishermen engaged in lawful fishing operations at sea,” implying that Beijing’s actions in its own waters were illegitimate. The NSB is Taiwan’s primary intelligence agency.

It is not uncommon for vessels from Taiwan and the mainland to operate in each other’s waters, with Taipei’s Fisheries Agency stating that a “tacit agreement” existed between the two sides. In the past, if the CCG did board vessels, fishermen would be fined and quickly released. The CCG had not detained a Taiwanese fishing vessel since 2007.

Kinmen in fact has close economic relations with Xiamen with many of its residents favoring greater relations with the mainland, rather than fearing a supposed invasion. It is a sharp change from the past when the island was heavily militarized, particularly during the period of dictatorial martial law in Taiwan that lasted from 1949 to 1987.

However, Taipei continues to base special forces on Kinmen, specifically the 101st Amphibious Reconnaissance Battalion. The US has also stationed troops on the island, which then-Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng claimed in March was part of a training mission alongside Taiwanese soldiers. This “training exercise” goes back to at least 2020. Last year, the US raised its number of troops in Taiwan from 30 in 2022 to between 100 and 200. The stationing of US forces on Kinmen no doubt facilitates intelligence gathering near Xiamen, which has naval and air bases.

The tensions in the Taiwan Strait are ultimately driven by Washington’s efforts to goad China into a war to bolster its hegemony in Asia. Under first the Trump administration and now Biden, this has included provocatively challenging the One China policy by permanently stationing US troops in Taiwan, conducting visits by high-ranking politicians, and sending warships through the Taiwan Strait. Washington is also encouraging pro-independence politicians like new President Lai Ching-te of the Democratic Progressive Party to take an even more hardline approach to Beijing.

The One China policy stems from Washington’s refusal to acknowledge the People’s Republic of China following the victory of the Chinese Revolution in 1949 and the defeat of the brutal dictator Chiang Kai-shek and the Kuomintang (KMT). The US instead claimed that the KMT regime, which had fled to Taiwan with US assistance, represented the legitimate government of all of China.

Only in 1979 did Washington recognize Beijing and withdraw formal diplomatic and military relations with Taipei. The US therefore de facto recognized Beijing as the legitimate government of China, including Taiwan. Beijing has never given up its goal of reuniting with Taiwan, conscious that allowing Taipei to declare independence would set a precedent for further carving up Chinese territory in line with the aims of US imperialism.

Washington has responded to the incident with the Da Jin Man in a thoroughly hypocritical manner. On July 3, the White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre answered a question from the press, saying Washington was “closely monitoring the incident, so we’re going to continue to do that.” She made no criticism of the Taiwanese fishermen’s violation of Beijing’s fishing moratorium.

The US has politicized the issue of Chinese illegal fishing in waters around the world in order to demonize Beijing and claim it and Chinese businesses do not follow the “rule of law.” In April, Admiral John Aquilino, Commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command, denounced Chinese fishing vessels as a “maritime militia.” This has been used as an excuse for the US to send its own coast guard into the South Pacific and board Chinese fishing vessels alongside nations hosting the US vessels. Beijing has branded the US Coast Guard’s actions illegal.

Washington’s actions are also leading to a growth of other dangerous incidents. On February 14, two mainland Chinese fishermen drowned near Kinmen after being chased by the Taiwanese coast guard for supposedly fishing in restricted waters. Since then, the CCG has increased patrols around Kinmen, including entering what Taiwan calls restricted waters. Then on June 15, new regulations announced in May took effect that allow the CCG to detain people suspected of violating Chinese waters for up to 60 days.

Beijing subsequently announced that its coast guard had “adopted a new model of conducting law enforcement” around Kinmen. On June 25, four China Coast Guard vessels reportedly entered restricted waters around Kinmen and were followed by three Taiwanese coast guard ships in response.

The state-owned Global Times wrote the following day, “Since June, the Fujian Coast Guard has organized a fleet of warships to continuously strengthen law enforcement patrols in the waters near Kinmen, and earnestly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese fishermen, including those in the island of Taiwan.”
