The owners of McFaul's IronHorse Tavern in Loch Raven have opened a new concept named after the family's two favorite things -- oysters and fishing.
McFaul's Oyster and Reel began serving customers last week at 900 Baltimore Yacht Club Road along Sue Creek in Essex. Glen and Kristin McFaul own the restaurant along with Walter Lashno and Emory Plitt. The space was previously home to the New Sue Island Grill and Crabhouse, which sold at auction last year for $1.52 million.
The 12,840 square-foot building along Sue Creek offers the same local-to-table concept IronHorse provides, but will emphasize resources from the water.
"The oysters are centric in our whole makeup and essential to the Chesapeake Bay," Glen McFaul said.

The view is pretty but the inside needs updating. The shrimp wrap was amazing. The shrimp were plentiful and tender, and perfectly seasoned. Unfortunately I can't be kind about the baked ziti. It was dry, and flavorless. No seasoning to speak of, just bland. My last bite though was quite a treat. The brownies were moist, and chocolate rich. Couldn't get enough of them.
Used the fuel dock on May 16, 2020 and someone who worked at the yacht club/fuel dock copied my credit card and used it at various places in the area including gas stations over the bay bridge. Be vigilant when using your credit card there.
a visit to the cousins isn't complete without a spin on my uncle's big boat out on chesapeake bay. happy to be all grown up...the younger nephews&nieces are now on the spit-and-polish-the-deck duty. rewards include fried chicken, biscuits n gravy, slaw, corn and crab cakes. some of us spent the night onboard and charged (to most esteemed uncle) a sailors dinner at the clubhouse of grilled steaks and fried maryland softshell CRABS. yummmm.
BYC Sue Island
We have been going there for a few years now. The service is excellent! I'm only giving it 4 stars as there is always room for improvement. My youngest has food sensitivity and I've been told numerous times call ahead and we will be glad to accommodate. Numerous times I do not call ahead and yet they still find things for her to eat. Service is typically excellent, even during busy times. The food is good, and one of the best places for a crabcake. The menu has changed and though some good choices I'd like to see more simple choices as well. All in all BYC is great and would highly recommned it.
I am not sure about the dock because we did not go on a boat I but I can report on the restaurant. I was there for a private party. When my husband drove up to the "drop off only" it was difficult to tell if we were in the right place and there were no signs despite the fact that there was a private party there. When we walked in, it felt more like a run down salty old bar in the Keys than a Yacht club. The lighting and decor is extremly depressing. There was also no one there to greet us, so we wandered around a bit, to try and figure out of we were in the right place. The view is nice but they need to update the interior a lot. Finally we turned a corner and a bartender was there and told us where the party room was. We walk in to a room with a very nice view, but the atmosphere again was really depressing. No special lighting and a dropped ceiling, like you see in an office building. There were small plastic flowers in a lame vase in the middle of each table. No menus for the buffet lunch or anything, no real decor at all. They actually had way too many tables and chairs set up. That's party rule #1 keep your company close together or it will be awkward. No staff announced when we should start eating, so we all guessed. There was no one coming around to pour water, in fact there were not even silverware set ups at the tables. You had to go get your own. Then we hit the "buffet" which was turkey and roastbeef on cheap white rolls. Really? Why does this place have the right to call itself a "Yacht Club". The food was worse than some of the food shacks you find on beaches. This place needs a major overhaul.

After the fire: St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club focused on revitalizing this coming summer
P ANAMA CITY — In November, the St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club building on Bunkers Cove Road was destroyed in a fire. Ever since then, questions have circulated around the community: How did the fire start? Would the Yacht Club rebuild?
The Yacht Club was up and operational for business within weeks of the fire. The Yacht Club is still taking in new members, as well. Members have joined the club even after the fire.
”The Yacht Club is in better shape than people would have imagined,” said Michael Wynn, 2024 commodore. “The staff members that we have are family to us. We believe and give to them and they give back to us.”
Wynn explained that one club member had this to say after the fire: “The clubhouse was just a building; the Yacht Club is about the people.”
The Yacht Club has discussed expanding its sailing center to provide greater resources for the community. The club expects the plans and renderings for the new club facility will be unveiled this summer.
Some of the staff members have left the club since the incident and others have stayed.
“Our staff is smaller now since the fire,” said Wynn. “We have less services being offered at the moment, but many staffers who left the club for other jobs have offered to come back once the club becomes (fully) operational again.”
The cause of the fire is still unknown. There have been different ideas and theories on how the fire started, but there has not been a definitive answer. But there was no foul play, Wynn emphasized.
”Right now, we don’t have a final number on what it’s going to cost to rebuild,” said Wynn. “We have architects and plans on rebuilding. We have members of the community who are donating services to help cut the cost (of our rebuild).”
More information about the club will be released closer to the clubhouse reopening. Wynn said the rebuild will both honor the club's history and heritage and also add modern touches.
Previous coverage: More details released as Panama City monitors St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club fire site
Wynn said the club's experience dealing with insurance after the fire has been good and the matter soon will be resolved. The experience was much better than the ones many people had after Hurricane Michael, he noted.
Wynn also is humbled and gratified by the outpouring of support and dedication from his fellow club leaders and all club members. He knew his one-year term as commodore, which began in January, would be full of challenges. But the club has rallied because the tradition and legacy mean so much.
"People care so deeply," he said.
