07 Sep OWNER’S EXPERIENCE – Sailing on board Swan 48 Ambra

A performance cruiser with lifestyle on board!

We were so excited and couldn’t wait any more after the extended winter period for our new sailing dream a Swan 48, SY Ambra. Swan kept us in the loop and sent pictures from the factory and progress of the build. Finally, the boat was finished in spring sitting at the factory waiting for the delivery to the med. We decided to start our voyage in the med, since we had already sailed from the Baltic sea to the med onour previous boat. Everything worked out and we traveled to France on the 15th of June, the re/opening day of the borders in Europe.

Ambra arrived safely a few days earlier via Sleepy Yacht Transport, who documented the trip from Finland to France via road and ferries. The Swan Service Team in Villefranche-Sur-mer under the leadership of Yves, welcomed Ambra in the med and launched the boat.

We had plenty of time to organise all the things we will need for Ambra over the winter and accumulated a lot of parts and equipment to take on board.

The sales process with Britta and Thorsten Flack was professional and fun. We highly recommend to visit the factory and meet the experts to discuss all options on-site. Britta and Thorsten organized the factory visit and were the perfect hosts and supported us with their experience. Thorsten came to the launch in France as well and stayed with us, to discover and test all the features during the handover. Thank you to the perfect sales team for all your advice and pictures.

Why Swan 48?

We looked for a performance cruiser with lifestyle onboard. The combination of the experience in performance boat building by Nautor Swan in Finland and the Italian design influence has made the Swan 48 for us the ideal choice. Being a small crew we decided on the Swan 48 for many more reasons. We can handle the boat without additional crew,we like the design and Swan offers all the features which are important to us.

The performance under sail is amazing and confirmed our decision. The Swan 48 is not only fast, but well balanced and agile. You do not need to heel, the best performance comes with the right sail trim at max 20 degree healing angle, which is a convenient way to enjoy sailing.

We decided on a furling mast and Elvstrom sails to make it easier for us. The profile of the sails and performance is absolutely a great combination. As another speed kicker, we have a light furling reacher sail in pink. The sail has not only a fresh color but is so much fun and easy to handle, even by the two of us. The steering with the two ruder blades offers perfect control. Our concern to maneuver the Swan 48 in a small marina has not been an issue. Going backwards we use less the steering and prefer the bow thruster to direct the boat.

We decided for electric winches to handle the setup and they make it easier to optimize the trim.

The combination of systems such as a watermaker, lithium batteries, solar panels and a genset make Ambra the perfect and independent performance blue water cruiser. We prefer to stay on anchor and enjoy the freedom and nature.

The cockpit is spacious and offers plenty of seating options while cruising or to rest. In addition, there is a sunbathing area on the foredeck. It is a perfect hide away to enjoy the scenery or read a book.

Coming from a centre cockpit yacht, our initial concern was do we feel safe with an open aft cockpit? We confirm, so far we have never had that feeling and enjoy the spacious cockpit area.

The dinghy garage is a key storage area for all our water sport activities gear and other items you don‘t want to take into the boat. On longer trips we store our dinghy with the aluminium floor there as well. The dinghy area is accessible from the transom door and from the top which is helpful to access fenders or lines.

Below deck offers so much light from the large hull windows. We enjoy the sunrise in bed with a coffee and view over the water outside.

Swan 48 – Beautiful, Brilliant and Born in Finland: Yacht Style Review

The new Swan 48 by renowned designer Germán Frers is brilliant, as Yacht Style contributor Guy Nowell discovered after flying to Finland to see for himself.

“Today is looking good,” says Vanni Galgani, Product Line Leader at Nautor’s Swan. “This could be the Finnish summer. I’ll tell you if it is, then you can take your jacket off. It’ll last about half an hour.”

There’s a sort of wry truth behind the flippant comments. We
are just about to step aboard the oh-so-new Swan 48 – hull number one, splashed just the day before I tested it – and the weather is just perfect for sailing, with blue skies, sunshine and 14 knots of breeze. But it’s not always like this.

The Nautor’s Swan Boat Technology Centre is in Jakobstad (Pietarsaari in Finnish) on the Gulf of Bothnia, just 330km south of the Arctic Circle.

In winter, the temperature drops below -10 ̊C, the sea freezes over and the countryside turns into a very chilly wonderland. Like Swiss watchmakers holed up in the mountains, the Swan craftsmen are indoors, building some of the very best production sailing yachts in the world.

The Swan 48 had already sold at least 25 units during its world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival

When the spring comes, it’s the birthing season. When the sea ice melts, the boats are launched. The sailing season here is brutally short – just six weeks or so – and all the boats that have been built over the winter have to be launched, commissioned and handed over to their new owners.

“It’s always a bit mad,” Galgani says. “Every year we plan for it, but still it’s a bit mad.”

SWAN 48, ROUND THREE

The Swan 48 is the newest addition to the Nautor’s Swan family. Except for the ClubSwan 36, which is a flat-out racing boat, the 48 is the smallest Swan to go into production for some time.

Giovanni Pomati, a recent addition to the Nautor’s Swan family himself, having been appointed CEO in September 2018, was delighted to report that 16 boats were sold before the first one was launched – and that one more was signed while we were out on the water! That’s cheerful news for Nautor’s Swan, which is reporting a full order book all the way through the size range.

Light on her feet, easy to manage, and with all the feature comforts you’d expect from the Frers drawing board, the Swan 48 is a compilation of good design

Light on her feet, easy to manage, and with all the feature comforts you’d expect from the Frers drawing board, the Swan 48 is a compilation of good design

The new Swan is a Mk III version, the original 48 having been designed by Sparkman & Stephens in 1971 and the next one in 1995 by Germán Frers, who has also designed the 2019 version.

“You design to a brief,” says Frers, now 78. “Yes, it would be nice to start with just a line and a handful of imagination, but it is necessary to be more rational than that.”

He acknowledges that today’s materials allow a designer ever-greater freedom. “We can now build a great deal lighter for the same strength than ever before. Partly it is materials, partly it is engineering know-how. There is as much interior volume in this new 48 as there would have been in a 65-footer from 25 years ago.”

He looks rather pleased with himself, as if he had turned the Tardis into reality. So, what is it that gives this new Swan its appeal, even sight unseen? Pomati believes that it’s simply a matter of hitting a ‘sweet spot’ in the market.

With a place for everything, and everything in its place, the saloon works equally well when cruising or racing

With a place for everything, and everything in its place, the saloon works equally well when cruising or racing

“A 48-footer is a boat that can be easily handled by two people when cruising. It offers three seriously roomy cabins and two heads. It is designed as a quick boat to appeal to the ‘racer’ component of the racer/cruiser market,” says Pomati, who had previously worked in the automotive sector, spending 29 years with Pirelli Group.

“It speaks immediately to existing Swan owners looking for a replacement for an older Swan 44, 46, 461 or 48. It is attractive
to younger customers wanting to move up the size and the quality spectrum, and is ‘right there’ for older Swan customers looking to downsize to a boat with less canvas, less load in the lines, and less hard work.”

COMPETITIVE RACER/CRUISER

At the time of testing, the boat was too new to have an IRC certificate, but Frers promises that it will be “very competitive”. Twin wheels and twin rudders means that optimum performance comes at 22-24 degrees of heel, when the ‘active’ rudder is vertical.

The Argentina-born designer also points out that “CFD analysis indicates that a smaller rudder, near vertical, and with the windward (trailing) rudder touching the water, produces significantly less drag than a single, bigger rudder at an angle. It’s just more efficient.”

The chart table disappears under the starboard sofa for extra seating room

The mast is positioned well aft on the deck, right over the keel, allowing for a big ‘J’ and an expansive foredeck. Forward of the mast, you can fly an a-sail off the end of the fixed bowsprit, or a Code 0, a jib or a staysail. The bowsprit neatly conceals a structural bracket that supports the anchor and retrieval system.

From the foot of the mast, all lines disappear into conduits leading aft to the winches, all immediately accessible from the helm. Rope tails vanish into immensely deep and capacious lockers – you’ll never have a line rolling underfoot on this boat.

All the line conduits, as well as the trench for the foldaway
bimini, have lifting covers – no inaccessible tangles here. There’s
no mainsheet traveller, defining this boat perhaps as a cruiser/racer rather than a racer/cruiser, but the sheeting point is lifted up on a pedestal that doubles as a leg of the cockpit table (when in use), which makes sheeting close to the centre line a good deal easier.

FINISH SUPREME

Drop down the elegant white-oak companionway into the saloon, and everything is in its proper place. There’s light – lots of light – coming in at three levels: hull windows, coachroof windows and deck hatches. There are no special surprises in the layout, no revolutionary rearrangements, but the boat looks just and absolutely right. And refreshingly, the showers are a proper size for burly sailors, too.

The beautiful forward cabin has an en-suite

The beautiful forward cabin has an en-suite

There’s no sense in questioning the finish on a Swan interior, so we won’t. We have been in the factory and seen the layup of myriad interior components, and fully appreciate that these boats are constructed with an almost obsessive attention to detail and quality.

Furthermore, the Swan 48 hull is built as a one piece from glass, vinyl ester, Corecell foam core and a gelcoat finish, and then the bottom frame structure is installed in one piece. This is not only the strength and stiffening component of the boat but also the conduit for all the ‘services’ in the boat – principally water and electrical.

And then the interior is built in. Open any locker and you will find that the back panel is fabric, attached with Velcro, and all those wires hidden behind elegant joinery are in fact very easily accessible. Good design exemplified.

FRESH ON THE WATER

Out on the water, it’s a crisp summer’s day in Finland (keep your jacket on) and the boat heels to the breeze, leaning comfortably on her elbow – I could swear that it was between 22 and 24 degrees. Frers himself is on board and after a couple of tacks he pronounces himself satisfied.

Yacht Style contributor Guy Nowell takes the helm

“Of course, we are not trying to plane with a boat like this, so it’s important that both ends stay in the water, to maximise the waterline length. The fore-and-aft balance feels right, so I am happy there.”

For sure, there was some fine-tuning to be done, but sailing on flat water in nine knots of breeze and with sheets just eased, we were making 8.6 knots of boat speed.

The boat moves easily – there is no sensation of ‘loading up’, and the twin rudder set-up means that
the steering was light and responsive. In short, this boat is gentle on the helm, and any lucky owner is going to be able to eat up the cruising miles without any stress on the driver or the crew. A well-mannered boat, beautifully turned out, ready to please, and ready for adventures!

It’s €730,000 (US$820,000) for the basic model and no Swan is ever going to be described as cheap, but there are plenty of other boats out there that fit that category. For a few extra Euros, you can have a carbon mast and a 70cm crane at the top, and a v-boom that magically swallows up the main as it comes down. Owner of hull one ticked those boxes and won’t be disappointed.

The new Swan 48 is more than fit to assume the mantle of her famous predecessors, and is destined to be a boat that punches well above her weight in the competitive stakes. I’m putting my name down for hull 18. Now, where did I put my cheque book?

The icon updated: meet the 1970s Swan 48 given a radical new look

Lucky Bird is a 1972 Swan 48 that has been given a spectacular new lease of life by Younique Yachts in the Netherlands

Swan 48 exterior

Can you improve on perfection? The Sparkman & Stephens-designed Swan 48 is widely considered to be one of the most iconic bluewater sailing designs of all time. To take a classic example of this 1970s yacht and turn it into a weekend sailor fit for a 21st century family was brave, possibly even a little heretic.

Lucky Bird ‘s radical refurbishment wasn’t always on the cards. When the Swan 48 arrived at Younique the original plan was to fully restore the interior carpentry, but to keep it fundamentally original. As more and more of her traditional fittings were stripped out, however, the beauty of S&S’s original lines became visible inside the hull, as well as outside.

Inspired by what they found, owner Eric Bijlsma – who also owns the Hoek-designed superyacht Firefly and the Younique team decided to change their refit plans. Instead of recreating something original they moved towards restoring her with a much lighter, more modern touch.

yacht swan 48

“I have always been in love with the designs of Sparkman & Stephens, and I know that Olin Stephens’s favourite design was the Swan 48. I’m very keen on the lines and the heritage of the brand, but I was missing a bit of the modern feel,” recalls Bijlsma, who wanted a simpler yacht to sail with his family.

Creating sightlines along the hull edges and cabin sole, rather than concealing them under heavy fitted joinery, was integral to the design. “Once you can see where the hull meets the floor, which gives a lot of space, you see how the beautiful lines work from the interior,” explains Egbert Wattel, co-founder of Younique Yachts.

“Actually that was the starting point, and from then on we came up with new ideas to show the construction of the hull.”

yacht swan 48

The main tool they chose was miles of thin strip sycamore planking, which creates an optical effect of illustrating the original hull lines through the shadows between the planks. The new woodwork takes its inspiration from the original Swan 48 interior, which had some areas of strip planking visible above bunks in the forepeak and saloon, but has now been used throughout in a much lighter finish. The fixings were also changed, from visible screws to aluminium bolts with each bolt head hand-sanded and polished for the desired finish.

“If you look closely you can see around the hatches and the corners of the bulkheads, we wanted to keep that and rather than do anything to smooth it away, keep it honest,” explains Wattel.

Some areas of the yacht’s construction have been modified, and the interior reflects that. Lucky Bird ’s new rig has single stays, which has required new structure to be built underneath the chainplates for additional stiffness.

yacht swan 48

“The new rig has one chainplate, so all the stress is focused on one area now,” says Wattel. “So we designed a new strut under the deck, a large knee that we shaped in plywood first and integrated it into the bunks, and then the whole structure was covered with glassfibre and carbon fibre.”

In keeping with the overall ethos of showing rather than concealing the functional elements of the yacht, the contrasting carbon was instead integrated into the saloon berths. “All the things you need, it’s OK to see them, because if they are done properly each thing is a work of art,” explains Wattel.

A modern entrance

Other major structural changes were made around the companionway, where the pit area, coachroof and hatch have been entirely rebuilt.

“The entrance was not originally central in the boat,” explains Wattel. “It was 70mm to the starboard side, and that was designed to get access to the aft cabin properly.

“But because we wanted to have all the lines symmetrical we changed the whole entrance, cut out the original one and replaced it, making it wider and symmetrical again.”

yacht swan 48

Over the companionway there is now a large custom glass structure, with a flush glass hatch sliding over the top of a fixed glass pane for maximum light down below.

A new curved structure forward of the cockpit also houses channels for submerged lines, leading to newly recessed electric Andersen winches.

“The whole goal for me with this area was that it had to look like it was original. A Swan owner would know straight away that it is new but other sailors would think it is original. So the lines flow with the original lines – actually I think it is even better now,” comments Wattel.

The goal of creating a flush, minimalist deck on a 1970s design raised some challenges, the most forward hatch proving particularly technically difficult due to the curvature of the foredeck area. To achieve a flush finish Younique Yachts had to custom design everything from the glazing to the hinges.

yacht swan 48

The original anchor installation was removed, and replaced with a concealed anchor locker in the starboard bow. The characteristic Swan toerail was also pared down.

“The original Swan has quite a lot of aluminium toerail. We discussed for a while if we could refurbish it or remake it. In the end we said we’d remove it, so we had to cut out the whole thing,” recalls Wattel.

yacht swan 48

“Then we had to grind out part of the laminate, apply new extra-strong laminate because some of the strength would be lost by getting rid of the toerail there, and then the whole deck was filled flush again.”

The steering pedestal appears original but is in fact also all-new, sitting slightly higher to accommodate hydraulic controls for the backstay and vang as well as a joystick for the bow thruster, with a new custom wheel and modern compass.

A new higher aspect carbon fibre rig with slightly aft-swept spreaders carries an updated sailplan, a furling genoa, small jib, and an asymmetric which is set from a fixed tack point on the bow.

Accommodation

Down below there is an aft owner’s cabin, while pipecots in the foredeck give additional accommodation for weekending. The saloon berths are on two different levels, giving a seating area that can also be adapted to provide children’s berths for Bijlsma’s young family.

The galley is one of the most dramatic redesigns of the entire boat. A custom designed white Corian galley includes a sink, concealed waste bin, and electric hob. Stowage is limited by cruising yacht standards with no over counter cabinets, but instead crockery, utensils and cutlery is stored in custom-cut recesses, and there are specially designed cupboards for glassware. The industrial-style door abaft of the galley is a large fridge, set into the bulkhead with an American-inspired door design.

yacht swan 48

The modern refurbishment is not to everyone’s taste, “Some people say you wrecked the whole boat, it’s not a Swan anymore. But we don’t do that. We wanted to make it a better Swan, it still has to be a Swan, but we tried to improve it,” explains Wattel.

Bijlsma adds: “I always had in my mind that if Olin Stephens were still alive and he had the advantage of today’s possibilities then how would he have done it? I really tried to rebuild this wonderful boat according to the way I think he would have done it.”

Swan 48, little big Swan

yacht swan 48

The yard had received as many as 16 orders for the Swan 48, the  smallest boat in its classic line, even before it hit the water. It was formally presented at the autumn boat shows

by Niccolò Volpati – photo by Karolina Isaksson /Bildbolaget Du&Vi

IT DOESN’T HAVE “SWAN” WRITTEN ON IT ANYWHERE, not even in small writing on the stern or sides. It doesn’t need to. German Frers has the knack of making these boats quite distinctive. The range and the models are being updated, but their style and overall look are still recognisable. The 48  is the smallest, and also the latest. If you think that owners always want bigger boats, you are wrong. They want beautiful boats that are well made, but not ones that are necessarily especially large.

Swan 48

Luxury can find a place for itself even on a 48-footer . That is what the market wants. And the figures don’t lie. In one year, the Finnish yard has doubled its order book, increasing output from eleven to twenty boats. Sixteen versions of the 48  were sold even before it had been presented. The 48  is part of the classic Swan  line. It is the smallest in the range, which has boats of up to78 feet, while the MaxiSwan  range goes up to 120 feet, and the ClubSwan   racing boats up to 125.

The 48 is designed for cruising , and has been made with an obsessive attention so as to ensure comfort and safety when under way, as well as good performance. In fact, with just a few, simple changes you can compete in races. It is not a racing model, but the performance level is nevertheless guaranteed. The 15-tonne displacement, and the sail area works on the fact that the semi-square top mainsail covers 77 square metres, and there is the option to rig up as many as four headsails, each with its own furler. There is a genoa, and a Code 0, but there is also a staysail and a gennaker.

The yard recommends using a self-tacking staysail, which means that if you are sailing in a very strong wind, you can also have a headsail that is easy to handle. The windlass is entirely housed in the anchor chain well. It was designed to even take one hundred metres of chain without knots developing that would hinder mooring operations. Right in the bows there is a watertight bulkhead that isolates the area from the rest of the interior. And it is actually there that the retractable bow thruster is housed. Tunnel bow thrusters have all too often caused problems, sometimes even resulting in boats sinking. Whereas a retractable bow thruster, especially if it is kept in a sealed compartment, is an absolute assurance of safety.

Swan 48

In the stern there is the garage for the tender, which can be reached from the moveable platform and this area also has a compartment for a self-inflating life raft. The deck has very clean lines, and all the sheets and halyards are located under the deckhouse, and that is also where the spray hood is kept when retracted, so as to keep the gangways clear. The sheets and halyards come out next to the cockpit area, so as to be easily reached and accessible both by whoever is at the helm, and by anybody who is helping manoeuvre the boat.

There are two wheels , and the connections can be easily inspected from the stern area of the tender garage. It is also a system that is designed to reduce problems and difficulties as much as possible, so that you can comfortably move to using just one wheel, if one should cease to function. Everything is easy and to hand. There are four winches, all of them electric and all of the same size, so when you are cruising you can choose which are the easiest ones to use. You don’t need a skipper or a sailor to sail the Swan 48 ’ .

During my test in Finland, I tried it out on a sea that was practically flat, and the wind wasn’t excessive because it always stayed under ten knots, but that was enough to try out the performance levels provided by the new 48 . We were the first on board, and the boat had only been launched the previous day, so the instruments weren’t yet rigged up. The feeling I got was that it was a boat that was easy to handle, but at the same time a nice one .

Swan 48

It isn’t super light , with fifteen tonnes displacement, and yet it really performs superbly. It sails upwind at just under wind speed and really gives the feeling of getting going extremely easily. It doesn’t even lose speed when tacking, and accelerates quickly. It is perfect for cruising, but also for the classic Mediterranean races. In a few words, the 48’ is another Swan, with all the features that Swan owners expect.

Below decks you immediately feel the build quality and finish. The cabin doors, for example, are made from a material that means that they can be strong without the weight that solid wood would have meant. There is no plastic and not even adhesive film. Nowhere. It is all varnished wood.

Swan 48

There are moulds for every kind of corner and fitting. As you open up doors and lockers, you realise that the structure isn’t just made from a panel of plywood, but by using perforated canvas mounted on a frame. That way, it is straightforward to check the gap between furniture and the hull if required. You just have to consider how easy it is to take action without having to dismantle all the furniture if there should be some small cracks or leaks.

The layout of this first version of the boat has the owner’s cabin in the bow, with a bathroom complete with separate shower cubicle, as well as two other cabins and a bathroom in the stern. The two stern cabins are not symmetrical. The VIP cabin has twin beds, while the other has got just one bunk. The dinette and kitchen are notable for their size. To starboard there is a linear sofa with an adjustable height map table, while to port there is a U-shaped sofa around the dining table.

I liked the windows, and the fact that they are large without being enormous . That ensures natural light, and also a view outside. But they haven’t forgotten about safety below decks. Proof of that comes from the grab bar that leads from the stern right up to the owner’s cabin. There is a handhold to hang on to in every part of the dinette when the boat is heeling and sailing upwind.

In a sure sign of spring, Swan Boats glide again in Boston Public Garden

Swan Boats glided through the lagoon in the Boston Public Garden Saturday afternoon, marking the start of another season for one of the city's most popular attractions.

Like the spirited celebrations along Boylston Street on Marathon Monday, the launch of the Swan Boats in the Boston Public Garden is a symbol of the start of spring in the city.

As has been the case for almost 150 years, the fleet was ready for service on Saturday morning. The first boat carried Mayor Michelle Wu and her family through the famed lagoon.

Six-year-old Andile Gay, of Dorchester, participated in a Swan Boat art program for Boston Public School students, so her family was invited to ride with the mayor.

“It’s been fun,” Mbali Gay, 38, said of her family’s first-ever ride on the boats. “It’s been something that’s welcoming to all families.”

The iconic Swan Boats are a big draw for visitors to Boston on Patriots Day weekend.

As a child growing up in Boston, Maria DeSisto regularly went to the Swan Boats with her mother and sisters. She still tries to make it to every opening day.

“It just remains a wonderful, affordable constant in the city,” said DeSisto, 59, who now lives in Taunton. “For that 15 minutes on the ride? It’s just total peace and immersion in the experience.”

Preparations for each new magical season begin long before opening day. One of the city’s top tourist attractions, the Swan Boats operate on varying schedules through Sept. 2.

Crews spent months sanding down benches and varnishing oak slats on each boat. Last week, they lugged custom-made parts to the Public Garden, where each vessel was meticulously assembled by hand.

The Swan Boats, first introduced by Irish immigrant Robert Paget in 1877, are propelled by a driver who sits atop a paddle wheel to pedal the vessel forward.

“There’s a lot of little stuff that takes place over the winter,” Lyn Paget, a fourth-generation owner of the company, said in an interview ahead of this year’s opening. “And then there’s the regular painting and prep to get everything all spruced up so that they look great for opening.”

The Swan Boats, first introduced by Irish immigrant Robert Paget in 1877, are propelled by a driver who sits atop a paddle wheel to pedal the vessel forward, according to the company’s website . All six boats are built of oak, ornamental copper, iron, and brass, which Paget said makes them the only boats of their type left in the world.

“There’s something that’s really important about maintaining the tradition and integrity of these boats,” said Paget, who manages the company alongside her cousin, Phil Paget. “These boats are what create the memories and the stories that we hear over and over.”

While replacing the copper belly of each 3-ton boat with fiberglass might make for easier maintenance, Paget said maintaining the fleet’s original construction is essential to the long-term viability of the business.

“With a business like this, you can’t just be thinking about the next week or month or quarter or season,” said Paget, who spent her teenage years selling ride tickets. “You really have to be thinking about how we maintain this for as long as we possibly can.”

Like the Marathon, the return of the Swan Boats is a sure sign that Boston is waking up from winter.

“When people see those boats coming in, there’s this relief that we’re getting back outside,” said Paget. “We are a symbol that even if the weather’s not great on the day that we open, it’s going to get better.”

Like the Boston Marathon, the Swan Boats gliding through the lagoon in the Boston Public Garden is a rite of spring in the city.

Many people made their way to the boats after participating in the Boston 5K , a run through Back Bay held as part of the Marathon festivities.

Assyifa Ilman, 27, a Harvard graduate student from Indonesia, hopped aboard with friends after finishing the race.

“I think it’s a very good thing to open in spring because all the trees are blossoming at the moment, so it’s a really great experience overall,” Ilman said.

Olivia O’Dwyer, of Cambridge, said she expected the boats, which seat 20 people, to be smaller. “I didn’t expect [there] would be so many people on the boat,” she said.

But O’Dwyer, 25, said she loved sharing a ride on one of the iconic boats.

“It was honestly kind of nice to be with that whole group,” she said.

Each Swan Boat is assembled by hand at the start of each season. A boat can hold 20 passengers.

While athletes raced nearby and the city celebrated the opening of Boston Marathon weekend, another beloved tradition returned to the Boston Public Garden: the Swan Boats.

Swan Boats are a landmark in Boston, and part of the tradition includes the mayor celebrating their return to the lagoon. Mayor Michelle Wu was aboard for the first ride of the season around the lagoon at 10 a.m.

Boston's Swan Boats were first launched in 1877 by Irish immigrant and shipbuilder Robert Paget, who was inspired by the opera Lohengrin. Five generations later, the Paget family continues to operate the business.

The process of re-assembling the Swan Boats and launching them on the lagoon is a labor of love.

Two years ago, Swan Boat president Lyn Paget explained that the six boats that comprise the fleet were built between 1910 and 1992, with materials like iron, oak, brass and copper. But handling those heavy materials isn't the only reason why re-assembling the boats is a time-consuming, detail-oriented undertaking.

"They are custom-made, which means that each piece of the boat — and there's about 25 pieces — is a custom piece, non-interchangeable," she said.

Video below: 2022 Swan Boat season begins

The oldest boat in operation has been on the lagoon each season since 1910, and the newest was launched in 1993. Fully loaded, each weighs approximately three tons and is powered by the driver, who uses a foot-propelled paddle wheel.

From April 13 through June 20, rides are offered from 10 a.m. through 4 p.m., weather permitting. From June 21 through Labor Day, the hours are 10 a.m. through 5 p.m.

Rides cost $4.50 for adults, $4 for seniors and $3 for children ages 2-15. Children under age 2 are free.

Swan boats return for 2024 season

A n initiation from winter to spring Boston’s historic Swan Boats, are scheduled to return to the Public Garden on Saturday morning.

2024 marks the 147th season for the Swan Boats which is an iconic symbol of Boston and the Public Garden

The swan on the boats is made from either copper or fiberglass, depending on the age of the boat, and encloses a paddle mechanism that is used to propel the boat through the water.

Each Swan Boat weighs three tons and is made on oak-framed pontoons sheathed in copper the same way they were originally built.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, and the Paget family celebrated the 147th season.

" The opportunity to be together as a family to experience something that is so unique and fun right in the heart of the city is very special ,” said Mayor Wu.

The Swan Boats were first launched in 1877 by Irish immigrant and shipbuilder Robert Paget. The Paget family continues to operate the rides.

Some people said after weeks of gloomy, rainy weather, seeing the son was a treat.

“The weather has been horrible the last few days so it’s lovely to finally get some blue skies and some sun and be able to be out on the water,” said Sini Ngobese, Somerville.

Steven Kruszkowski, Program Director from Boston Parks and Recreation said this is just the beginning.

“The swan boat opening is truly the kick-off to spring and it’s the exciting start of all of the wonderful programming we’re going to have in all of Boston Parks,” said Kriszowski.

Swan boats return for 2024 season

BOSTON — An initiation from winter to spring Boston’s historic Swan Boats, are scheduled to return to the Public Garden on Saturday morning.
