Navigating the Spelling of Yacht: A Smooth Sailing Guide

The word "yacht" often raises eyebrows when it comes to spelling. This term, synonymous with luxury and leisure on the water, has a spelling that doesn't quite align with its pronunciation, leading many to second-guess themselves. In this article, we'll set sail through the correct spelling of "yacht," providing you with tips and examples to ensure that your writing journey is as smooth as a serene sea.

Understanding Yacht

A yacht is a type of boat or ship that is often used for pleasure, racing, or cruising. Originating from the Dutch word "jacht," which means "hunt," it was originally used to describe light, fast sailing vessels used to chase pirates. The transformation from "jacht" to "yacht" in English is where the spelling complexity lies.

The Spelling Challenge

The main challenge with "yacht" is its unorthodox spelling compared to its pronunciation. The 'ch' is silent, and there's no hint of the 't' in how it's spoken, which can lead to misspellings like "yatch," "yaght," or "yaht."

Tips for Spelling Yacht

  • Remember the Dutch origin: The 'cht' is a common Dutch spelling.
  • Silent 'ch': The 'ch' in yacht is not pronounced.
  • End with 't': Despite not being pronounced, it's always there.

Examples in Context

Using "yacht" in sentences can help reinforce its correct spelling:

  • They spent the weekend sailing on a luxury yacht.
  • His dream was to circumnavigate the globe in a yacht.

Spelling Yacht Correctly

To ensure you always spell "yacht" correctly, consider these strategies:

  • Link to Its Origin : Remembering its Dutch origin can help with the 'cht.'
  • Visual Association : Associate the word with an image of a yacht, reinforcing the spelling.
  • Create a Mnemonic : Think of "You Always Can Have Tea" (Y-A-C-H-T).

Summary and Key Insights

Remember, spelling "yacht" correctly is all about understanding its origin and unique spelling pattern. It's a word that might not follow the usual rules, but with a bit of practice, it becomes easy to handle.

Yatch or Yacht – Which is Correct?

  • by Sarah Thompson
  • March 1, 2024

Yacht or yatch, which is it? This is a common question that many people have when it comes to spelling this particular word. Whether you’re a native English speaker or someone who is learning English as a second language, it’s important to get the spelling and usage of words right. In this case, the correct spelling is “yacht.”

Now, let’s learn why “yacht” is the correct spelling and how you can remember it with a few simple examples.

Firstly, the word “yacht” is of Dutch origin, and it refers to a luxurious, recreational boat typically used for pleasure or racing. This word has been a part of the English language for centuries, and over time, it has become widely accepted and recognized.

To understand why “yacht” is the correct spelling, let’s look at the pronunciation of the word. It is important to remember that the “ch” in “yacht” is pronounced as a “k” sound, as in the word “cat.” This pronunciation is consistent with other words like “ache,” “architect,” and “mocha.”

Now, let’s consider some examples to solidify your understanding. Imagine you are having a conversation with someone, and you want to mention a luxurious boat that you saw during your vacation. You could say, “I saw a beautiful yacht in the harbor yesterday.” Here, using the correct spelling “yacht” helps you effectively communicate your message, ensuring that others can understand the specific type of boat you are referring to.

Furthermore, imagine you are reading a brochure about an upcoming regatta, a prestigious sailing competition. The brochure would likely use the correct spelling “yacht” to describe the boats participating in the event, such as “The world’s finest yachts will be racing against each other.”

It is worth noting that common misspellings such as “yatch” or “yeacht” may occur due to the “ch” sound in “yacht.” However, it is essential to remember that confusing the “ch” sound with a “tch” sound, as in the words “catch” or “watch,” is incorrect.

To ensure that you are using the correct spelling “yacht,” you can try a simple trick to remember it. Think of a yacht as a “yummy and cool boat.” By associating the word “yummy” with the letter “y” and the word “cool” with the “ch” sound, you can remember the correct spelling and pronunciation.

In conclusion, the correct spelling of this luxurious boat is “yacht.” The word has a rich history and is widely recognized in the English language. Remember to pronounce the “ch” sound as a “k” sound. By using the correct spelling “yacht” in your conversations and writing, you can effectively communicate and demonstrate your understanding of the English language. So, next time you encounter this word, remember, “yacht” is the way to go!

English [ edit ]

spelling of yacht or yatch

Etymology [ edit ]

Circa 1557; variant of yaught , earlier yeaghe ( “ light, fast-sailing ship ” ) , from Dutch jacht ( “ yacht; hunt ” ) , in older spelling jaght(e) , short for jaghtschip ( “ light sailing vessel, fast pirate ship ” , literally “ pursuit ship ” ) , compound of jacht and schip ( “ ship ” ) .

In the 16th century the Dutch built light, fast ships to chase the ships of pirates and smugglers from the coast. The ship was introduced to England in 1660 when the Dutch East India Company presented one to King Charles II, who used it as a pleasure boat, after which it was copied by British shipbuilders as a pleasure craft for wealthy gentlemen.

Spanish Police Arrest Three Over Death of Migrants Thrown From Boat

Reuters

MADRID (Reuters) - Spanish police have arrested three people over the deaths of five migrants who were deliberately forced off a speedboat last November, just off an Atlantic ocean beach in Cadiz in southern Spain, the Interior Ministry said on Monday.

The two men and one woman detained in the Algeciras area about 70 km (44 miles) southeast of Cadiz, are accused of forcing the migrants to jump at knife point into the swell with strong currents, despite knowing that many migrants could not swim.

The trio are also suspected of belonging to a criminal organisation, offences against the rights of foreign nationals, injuries and smuggling.

Images published on social media in November showed a black inflatable speedboat circling in heavy tides off the beach and people on board pushing others off the side.

Police, who made the arrests after finding the boat, said there were at least 37 migrants on board who had paid between 3,000 euros and 12,000 euros ($3,270-$13,075) each for the journey between Kenitra in Morocco and Cadiz.

Despite its proximity to Morocco, the Cadiz area is not a common destination for migrants due to rough seas on the Atlantic coast and surveillance around the Strait of Gibraltar nearby.

The number of migrants arriving in Spain by boat in the first two months of this year quadrupled to 13,485 from the same period a year ago, interior ministry data shows.

Rights group Walking Borders said 6,618 people lost their lives during risky sea voyages trying to reach Spain in 2023.

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht screamed 'I will kill you' and threw $100 bills into the water when told he couldn't use a private dock

  • The owner of a Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee, per CBS8.
  • The employee said Ajay Thakore mooned and threw cash at him after being told he couldn't use the dock.
  • Thakore, the CEO of Doctor Multimedia, issued an apology through his public relations team.

Insider Today

The owner of a $3.4 million Lamborghini yacht threatened a private dock employee after being told he couldn't be there, the San Diego-based broadcaster CBS8 reported on March 11.

Joseph Holt, a 21-year-old employee at Marriot Marina in San Diego, told CBS8 that he spotted the yacht sailing into the private dock. The owner, whom CBS8 identified as Ajay Thakore, tried to pick another person up at the dock, Holt said.

"I told him respectfully that he couldn't be there, and I honestly was hoping to have a conversation with him about his cool boat," Holt told CBS8.

In a YouTube video posted by @SM-wc9eq on March 10, a dark blue Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 is seen sailing out of a dock. A man in a gray T-shirt, a pair of jeans, and a cap was shown standing on the yacht. The man appeared to be Thakore, per CBS8.

Thakore was shown shouting at Holt. "I will kill you, you know I will kill you!" he can be heard saying multiple times in the video

Thakore was later shown pounding his fist on his palm and pointing his thumb down before telling Holt: "To your face!" Holt was shown responding by pointing his middle finger at Thakore.

"I really was trying to restrain myself from getting fired from my job or stepping out of line. The only thing I did was give him the bird," Holt told CBS8.

Related stories

Holt said Thakore then took $100 bills from his wallet and threw them at him. He added that Thakore mooned him. This exchange was not shown in the video.

"He was saying I'm nobody, I'm nothing, I work a silly job. He said that he knows people, he has connections, he can change my life and ruin it," Holt said. Holt did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

The San Diego Harbor Police arrived at the marina 10 minutes after Thakore's yacht exited the dock, per CBS8.

The Harbor Police told Business Insider that Holt decided to press charges against Thakore and that they are investigating the incident.

According to Thakore's LinkedIn page , he's the CEO of Doctor Multimedia. The company's website shows that it's a healthcare marketing firm based in San Diego. Thakore appears to go by the name Ace Rogers on Instagram and TikTok, where he's noted as being a professional gambler.

Thakore, through his public relations team, told CBS8 in a statement that his altercation with Holt was "regrettable."

"What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange," the statement said. Thakore did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI.

Thakore isn't the only CEO who's been called out for threatening another person. In November 2021, an Activision spokesperson told BI that its ex-CEO Bobby Kotick had previously apologized for telling his assistant he would have her killed. The spokesperson added that Kotick's threat was "obviously hyperbolic and inappropriate" and that "he deeply regrets the exaggeration and tone."

In June 2020, Lisa Alexander, the CEO of LaFace Skincare, a cosmetics company, apologized in a statement to the media after she had threatened to call the police on her neighbor for writing "Black Lives Matter" on his property. Alexander said in the apology that she was "disrespectful" and "should have minded my own business."

MEULABOH, Indonesia: An Indonesian search and rescue ship on Thursday (March 21) located a capsized wooden boat that had been carrying dozens of Rohingya Muslim refugees, and began pulling survivors who had been standing on its hull to safety.

An AP photographer aboard the rescue ship said 10 people had been taken aboard local fishing boats and another 59 were being saved by the Indonesian craft.

Men, women and children, weak and soaked from the night’s rain, wept as the rescue operation got underway and people were taken aboard a rubber dinghy to the rescue boat.

There were contradictory reports about whether anyone had died in the accident, with survivors saying many who had been aboard when the boat departed from Bangladesh were still unaccounted for, but authorities insisted everyone had been rescued.

"We have examined all 69 Rohingya that we rescued and from our examination, there was no information from them about any deaths," Fathur, a rescue officer who gave only one name, told reporters. "We managed to evacuate all 69 people and no one stated that anyone had died.”

With the addition of six Rohingya who were rescued by private fishing boats that were at the scene well before authorities launched the official rescue mission, a total of 75 people from the boat were saved.

But Samira, a 17-year-old who was among the refugees from the Kutupalong camp in Bangladesh who had been traveling to Malaysia, said there had been 146 people on board, raising the prospect that 71 could still be missing at sea.

She said the boat began foundering three days ago and then capsized on Wednesday, adding that her nephew was among those unaccounted for.

"All of us are very sad," she said. "We are very hungry and weak.”

When fishing vessels reached the scene on Wednesday, desperate refugees clamoured aboard one of the boats, overloading it and causing it to also capsize. It was not immediately clear what happened to the crew on board.

After being informed about the refugees in need of help by the fishermen Wednesday morning, an official search and rescue team set off from Banda Aceh city on Wednesday evening. They didn't reach the area of the accident until early in the morning and could not initially locate the capsized boat.

When they came upon it midday Thursday, they found the refugees on its hull, desperate for help.

They rescued 42 men, 18 women and nine children and took some to a temporary shelter in the Aceh Besar district and others to a local hospital for treatment.

Amiruddin, a tribal fishing community leader in Aceh Barat district, said those rescued indicated that the boat was sailing east when it started leaking and then strong currents pushed it toward the west of Aceh.

About 740,000 Rohingya fled earlier to Bangladesh to escape a brutal counterinsurgency campaign by security forces in their homeland of Myanmar.

Thousands have been trying to flee overcrowded camps in Bangladesh to neighboring countries, with Indonesia seeing a spike in refugee numbers since November which prompted it to call on the international community for help. Rohingya arriving in Aceh face some hostility from some fellow Muslims.

Indonesia, like Thailand and Malaysia, is not a signatory to the United Nations’ 1951 Refugee Convention outlining their legal protections, and so is not obligated to accept them. However, they have so far provided temporary shelter to refugees in distress.

Last year, nearly 4,500 Rohingya - two-thirds of them women and children - fled their homeland of Myanmar and the refugee camps in neighboring Bangladesh by boat, the United Nations refugee agency reported. Of those, 569 died or went missing while crossing the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, the highest death toll since 2014.

Returning safely to Myanmar is virtually impossible because the military that attacked them overthrew Myanmar’s democratically elected government in 2021. No country has offered them any large-scale resettlement opportunities. - AP

Dozens of Rohingya rescued from hull of capsized boat off Indonesia

spelling of yacht or yatch

Dozens of Rohingya were rescued Thursday after spending the night on the overturned hull of a capsized boat off the Indonesian coast, according to media reports, as an international charity expressed alarm about the numbers of unaccompanied Rohingya minors making the perilous voyage.

The refugees, part of Myanmar’s persecuted Muslim minority, were part of the increasing numbers fleeing, for the most part, from overcrowded camps in Bangladesh, to seek a new life elsewhere in the region.

A search-and-rescue ship set off from Banda Aceh in northern Indonesia on Wednesday evening, hours after the wooden boat capsized, and rescued 59 men, women and children around midday Thursday, according to the Associated Press . Ten other people were rescued by fishing boats, it added.

It is unclear how many people were originally on board the vessel, though six of the survivors rescued by fishermen estimated the number to be between 60 and 100.

Almost 4,500 Rohingya embarked on dangerous journeys by sea last year in hopes of reaching other countries in Southeast Asia, according to the United Nations’ refugee agency’s figures from January. Of those, 569 were reported dead or missing, the highest numbers since 2014.

In 2017, Myanmar’s military launched a deadly crackdown on the long-persecuted and stateless Rohingya Muslim minority, killing about 10,000 people and forcing hundreds of thousands to flee into neighboring Bangladesh, in what the U.N. human rights chief at the time described as “a textbook example of ethnic cleansing.”

But for many Rohingya, the crisis is far from over.

According to the U.N. refugee agency figures , almost 1 million Rohingya refugees remain in Bangladesh — more than half of them children. In the camps, violence has increased as Rohingya militant groups turned on each other, The Washington Post reported last year.

Around 600,000 Rohingya remain in Rakhine state, “where they continue to suffer severe rights restrictions and the threat of further violence,” Tom Andrews, the U.N. special rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar, said last year. In February, Human Rights Watch warned that renewed fighting in Rakhine had caused civilian casualties and forced 100,000 people — many of them already displaced — to flee their homes.

On Thursday, Save the Children reported a “worrying rise” in the number of unaccompanied Rohingya children arriving in Indonesia. The organization analyzed figures from the U.N. refugee agency and found that around 250 unaccompanied children arrived in Indonesia in the last three months of 2023 — an increase of 78 percent compared to the rest of the year.

Sultana Begum, Save the Children’s Asia regional head of humanitarian policy, said in a telephone interview Thursday that deteriorating conditions inside the refugee camps in Bangladesh have forced many to consider the dangerous journeys.

Rohingya living in the camps have little freedom of movement, lack access to formal education and face increased hunger and malnutrition following cuts to food rations, she said, while violence and insecurity are also growing.

“People are really desperate. They’ve resorted to marrying off girls in high numbers [and] sending out boys to work,” Begum said. “Getting on the boats is really a last resort for them in order to try and get to somewhere where they think they may have a better life.”

Although Indonesia is not a signatory to the U.N. Refugee Convention, it has so far allowed the boats to land. But most countries in the region do not accept Rohingya as refugees, and some have pushed boats back, she added.
